You may have heard the term “quart size bag” thrown around in the context of travel, but do you know exactly what it refers to? Simply put, a quart size bag is a small, clear plastic bag with the dimensions of 7 inches by 8 inches (or 18 cm by 20 cm). These bags are designed to hold liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item.

The quart size bag is an essential tool for travelers , as it allows them to easily store and transport these types of items while adhering to regulations set by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

So, what exactly can you put in a quart size bag? These bags are commonly used to store liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes that are necessary for personal hygiene or grooming. This includes items such as shampoo , conditioner, body wash, lotion, toothpaste, and more.

These items must be placed in the quart size bag in individual containers that hold 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. It’s important to note that the quart size bag must be able to be easily closed and placed in a carry-on bag or checked luggage.

In addition to adhering to regulations, quart size bags can also be a useful tool for staying organized while traveling. By separating liquids and other potentially leaky items into a quart size bag, you can help prevent any messes or spills in your luggage. Plus, having all of your liquids and toiletries in one place can make it easier to find what you need when you’re on the go.

Some travelers even like to use quart size bags to store and transport smaller items, such as chargers and cords, to keep them separate and easily accessible.

While quart size bags are the most commonly used option for transporting liquids and other potentially leaky items, they are not the only option. Some travelers prefer to use leak-proof toiletry bags, which come in a range of sizes and styles.

These bags are designed to keep liquids and other items from spilling out, making them a good alternative to quart size bags for those who want a bit more protection. It’s worth noting, however, that the TSA does still have regulations for leak-proof toiletry bags, so be sure to check their guidelines before packing one for your trip.

Now that you know a bit more about quart size bags and their uses, here are a few tips to help you pack yours like a pro:

  • Measure out your liquids: Make sure that all of your liquids and other items are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. It’s a good idea to use a small measuring cup or a set of measuring spoons to ensure that you are within the allowed limits.
  • Use travel-sized containers: To make it easier to adhere to the 3.4-ounce (100-milliliter) limit, consider purchasing travel-sized containers or using small containers that you already have at home. This will also help save space in your quart size bag.
  • Consider using a toiletry bag: While quart size bags are the most common option for packing liquids and other potentially leaky items, some travelers prefer to use toiletry bags for a bit of extra protection. Just be sure to check the TSA’s guidelines for these types of bags before packing one for your trip.
  • Pack your quart size bag last : To avoid any potential messes or spills, it’s a good idea to pack your quart size bag last. This way, you can be sure that all of your liquids and other potentially leaky items are securely contained before you close up your luggage.
  • Keep your quart size bag easily accessible: It’s a good idea to keep your quart size bag in a place that is easily accessible when you are going through security. Some travelers like to keep it in a carry-on bag or in a pocket of their checked luggage for easy access. This will make it easier to remove the bag and place it in a bin for inspection.
  • Label your quart size bag: If you have multiple quart size bags or are traveling with others who also have quart size bags, it can be helpful to label them with your name or initials. This will help ensure that you can easily identify your bag and avoid any mix-ups.

Quart size bags may seem like a small detail in the grand scheme of things, but they can actually be quite important when it comes to travel. By adhering to regulations and properly packing your quart size bag, you can help ensure a smooth and hassle-free trip through security.

Plus, by using a quart size bag to keep your liquids and other potentially leaky items organized, you can help prevent any messes or spills in your luggage. So next time you’re packing for a trip, don’t forget to include a quart size bag in your packing list !

TSA Regulations for quart size bags

When it comes to quart size bags and travel, one of the most well-known regulations is the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule. This rule dictates that all liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes must be placed in a quart size bag and must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item.

The quart size bag must then be placed in a single, clear, plastic, sealable bag that measures approximately 1 quart (or 1 liter). The 3-1-1 rule applies to all liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes that are carried in a carry-on bag or checked luggage.

travel quart bag

So, what exactly does the 3-1-1 rule mean? The “3” refers to the fact that all liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes must be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. The “1” refers to the fact that these items must be placed in a single, quart size bag. And the final “1” refers to the fact that each passenger is allowed to bring one quart size bag in their carry-on or checked luggage.

It’s important to note that all liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes must be placed in the quart size bag, even if they are partially used. This includes items such as shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothpaste, and more. The TSA recommends that these items be placed in the quart size bag in a manner that allows for easy inspection.

While the 3-1-1 rule is strictly enforced for most liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes, there are a few exceptions. Medications, baby formula, and breast milk are all allowed in larger quantities and do not need to be placed in a quart size bag. These items may be carried in a carry-on bag or checked luggage and do not count towards the one quart size bag per passenger limit. It’s a good idea to bring a doctor’s note or other documentation for medications, as well as a note from a healthcare professional for baby formula and breast milk.

Here are a few tips to help you adhere to the 3-1-1 rule when packing your quart size bag:

  • Measure out your liquids: As mentioned previously, it’s important to make sure that all of your liquids and other potentially leaky items are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. A small measuring cup or set of measuring spoons can be helpful for ensuring that you are within the allowed limits.
  • Pack your quart size bag last: To avoid any potential messes or spills, it’s a good idea to pack your quart size bag last. This way, you can be sure that all of your liquids and other potentially leaky items are securely contained before you close up your luggage.
  • Keep your quart size bag easily accessible: When going through security, it’s important to keep your quart size bag easily accessible. Some travelers like to keep it in a carry-on bag or in a pocket of their checked luggage for easy access. This will make it easier to remove the bag and place it in a bin for inspection.
  • Know the rules for medications and other exceptions: If you are traveling with medications or other items that are exempt from the 3-1-1 rule, such as baby formula or breast milk, be sure to bring documentation and keep them easily accessible. This will help expedite the security process and avoid any potential delays or issues.

While the 3-1-1 rule primarily applies to carry-on luggage, it is also important to consider when packing checked luggage. Any liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes that are placed in checked luggage must still adhere to the 3.4-ounce (100-milliliter) limit per item and must be placed in a quart size bag. However, because these items will be placed in the hold of the plane, they are not subject to the one quart size bag per passenger limit. It’s important to note, however, that some airlines may have additional restrictions on what can be placed in checked luggage, so be sure to check with your specific airline before packing.

Variations in travel and quart size bags

While the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule is the most well-known regulation for quart size bags, it is important to note that there may be variations in rules for different modes of transportation and international travel.

Different modes of transportation, such as airplanes, trains, and buses, may have different regulations for quart size bags. For example, some trains and buses may not have the same restrictions on liquids and other potentially leaky items as the TSA. It’s a good idea to check with your specific transportation provider to see what their regulations are for quart size bags and other carry-on items.

It’s also important to note that different countries may have different regulations for quart size bags and other carry-on items. Some countries may have stricter rules for liquids and other potentially leaky items, while others may have more lenient regulations. It’s a good idea to research the specific regulations for the country you will be traveling to before packing your quart size bag.

So, how can you prepare for the potential variations in quart size bag regulations when traveling? Here are a few tips:

  • Research the regulations: Before packing your quart size bag, be sure to research the specific regulations for the mode of transportation and country you will be traveling to. This will help ensure that you are aware of any potential differences in regulations and can pack accordingly.
  • Pack appropriately: Once you know the specific regulations for your trip, be sure to pack your quart size bag appropriately. This may involve leaving certain items at home or purchasing travel-sized versions of your favorite products.
  • Stay informed: Regulations can change at any time, so it’s a good idea to stay informed about the current rules for quart size bags and other carry-on items. This will help ensure that you are always prepared for your travels.

By following these tips, you can help ensure that you are prepared for any variations in quart size bag regulations and can have a smooth and hassle-free trip.

Now that we’ve covered the basics of quart size bags and the regulations that surround them, it’s time to answer some commonly asked questions about these handy little bags. Expect much of the same information repeated here but if you have a specific question, feel free to jump straight to it!

While quart size bags are primarily used for transporting liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes, it is possible to bring other items in them as long as they are within the allowed size limits.

For example, you could place small electronic items , such as chargers and cords, in a quart size bag as long as they are not too large and can be easily closed. It’s worth noting, however, that the TSA has specific guidelines for electronic items in carry-on and checked luggage, so be sure to check those guidelines before packing your quart size bag.

While quart size bags are most commonly associated with air travel due to the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule, they can also be used for other modes of transportation. Per the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule, a quart size bag with liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, or pastes must be placed in a carry-on bag or checked luggage, regardless of whether the bag is sealed and unopened. This is because these items may be inspected and must be readily accessible to security personnel.

How To Choose A TSA Approved Quart Size Bag

One of the ways to ensure an easy experience at the airport is to have a TSA approved quart size bag with your liquids easily accessible in your carry-on bag for security checking.

Before we go any further let’s unpack what TSA approved quart size bags are.

What Is A TSA Approved Quart Size Bag?

A TSA-approved quart-size bag is a clear, sealable bag about 6 inches by 9 inches, roughly the size of a sandwich bag which you can use to pack your liquids, gels, creams, and aerosols in your carry-on luggage.

Each item in the bag should be 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less.

This rule is also known as the TSA’s  3-1-1 liquids rule .

TSA 3-1-1 liquid rule

Judging from that information from TSA website and personal experience I can easily say that any clear bag that helps TSA officers to quickly identify the contents of the bag and is of the right size can be considered TSA approved.

Why Do I Need To Use A Quart Bag?

It’s convenient to have your liquids in one place, so you can easily take the bag out of your carry-on during screening process.

Another advantage is that you don’t have to worry that your liquids will leak.

Is TSA Strict About Quart Sized Bags?

The good news is that they are not particularly strict about the size of the bag.

The most important part is that the total volume of all your liquids should not exceed 1 liter, and each container must be no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). This means you can bring multiple small containers, but their combined volume must stay within the 1-liter limit.

So Can I Use A Sandwich Bag Instead?

Yes, you can use a sandwich bag instead of a specifically labeled TSA-approved quart-size bag, as long as it is clear and approximately a quart in size, which is about 6 inches by 9 inches.

Extra Rules to Consider

How many quart bags can i use can i bring 2 quart-size bags on a plane.

Only 1 Quart bag per traveler is allowed.

Things to keep in mind

If you have liquid containers that exceed 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters they need to be placed in checked luggage.

And in case you didn’t know peanut butter is also considered a liquid.

Special Cases

Only 1 Quart bag is allowed per traveler, however, there are a few exceptions to the rule. For example, medication can be placed into your resealable clear bag, however, this needs to be separate from other liquids. It is recommended that you bring along a letter from a health professional as a precaution.

Another exception is when you are flying with infants, in this case, you pack several things in your clear bag such as baby formula and expressed breast milk and diaper rash cream amongst other things which needs to be packed in a separate bag and presented at the checkpoint.

The TSA Approved Quart Size Bag Dimensions: Exactly How Big Can Your Toiletry Liquids Bag Be?

Last Updated on December 18, 2020

A first glance it seems perfectly reasonable for the TSA to ask people to pack carry-on toiletry liquids in a quart size bag when flying.

That is until you realize the geniuses at the TSA have unwittingly asked the general public to solve a so far unsolved math problem when determining the sizes of Ziplock bag they can use. We only want to bring liquids on planes not play at being Good Will Hunting!

You see, if you take a flat 2-dimensional Ziplock bag and put things inside it, it starts to take on a really complicated geometric shape that makes it incredibly difficult to accurately calculate the volume of the bag.

Thankfully we don’t really need to be accurate! Not even slightly accurate. The whole TSA quart bag rules are a bit of a mess really.

So How Big Is A Quart-Sized Bag?

The @AskTSA service on Twitter gets asked endless variations on this question!

  • What is a quart size bag?
  • What are the dimensions of a quart-sized bag?
  • What size baggie for carry on liquids?
  • What size bag for toiletries?
  • What size of baggie for liquids & gels?

And they almost always copy and paste the same answer:

Here’s another example:

So the official TSA answer goes like this:

We don’t approve or endore any particular products. As long as the toiletry bag is the approximate dimensions of a quart-sized bag (6″ x 9″), you’ll be good to go through the checkpoint. Pls remove the toiletry bag from your carry-on & place it in a separate bin for X-ray screening at security. Transport Security Administration

So great, they have a cut and past answer, but it’s a bit lame.

There are lots of clear 1-quart bags that have other dimensions. And you don’t always happen to have a 6 x 9 plastic bag handy when you are packing your liquids for in your carry-on bag.

What about all the other sizes of ziplock bags? Are they 1 quart or under?

Don’t worry TravelingLight.com has you covered!

Flat Quart Size Bag Dimensions Calculator

This calculator that I created below doesn’t precisely calculate the volume capacity of a quart-sized toiletry bag, but it’s close enough.

It’s sort of hacked together to give you something you can use when you travel. It was created using the TSA’s assertion that a 6 x 9 inch Ziplock bag is quart sized to create the formula.

Go ahead and adjust the dimensions of the ziploc bag to find out if it's quart-sized and TSA approved.

You can see that there are numerous sizes of baggies that are 1-quart capacity.

The sandwich bag is a half-decent substitute when packing liquids in your hand luggage. It’s 6.5 x 5.8 inches and 0.7 quarts. So if you are using a sandwich bag you’ll have 70% of the maximum space of taking liquids on planes.

Here is the root of the problem in my opinion…

When the TSA says “quart-sized” they don’t really mean a bag that has a volume capacity of 1 quart or 946 ml.

Quart size technically means, a quarter of a gallon. But while it’s a liquids bag you are not filling it up with water from the tap. You’re filling it with bottles and containers. So you won’t fit a quarter of a gallon of toiletries in your quart bag. Check this post to see how many bottles you can actually fit when planning your packing list.

The TSA just want you to use a little plastic bag roughly the same size as those sold and marketed as a quart bags. They want it to be clear plastic so your items are easily inspected. They want to be able to see the 3.4 oz bottles or containers that you packed inside. That’s how the rules were initially set up (because of terrorists trying to take liquid explosives on to a plane in 2006) and I doubt much thought has been given to them since.

Surely, there must be a better system than unsustainable plastic bags in 2020 and it’s time the TSA revisited their guidelines to make this clearer.

Although it hardly seems worth worrying about the environmental impact of the plastic TSA liquids bag when you are about to fly in an airplane and dump vast amounts of co2 into the atmosphere.

Still, it is better to reuse your bag and in that case, you might want a toiletries bag that is a little more substantial.

The Myth of “TSA Approved” Quart Sized Bags

If you’re going to buy a clear toiletry bag that is more sturdy you’re going to want to make sure that it complies with the rules. It should be easy to find something right?

Erm… not in this crazy world.

The TSA approves of any clear quart size bag . But they don’t go around issuing a stamp of approval to manufacturers.

If they did many of the bags that claim to be “TSA approved” would fail miserably…

For not actually being quart-sized.

Often these bags have a gusset. While they might be smaller than 6 x 9 inches on the face they are over 1-quart volume because of the depth.

Let’s take this bag as an example . Currently, the top-selling TSA Approved Quart Sized bag on Amazon.

Because it’s a rectangle it’s relatively easy to estimate the volume of the bag.

7.2 * 5 * 2 = 72 cubic inches.

72 cubic inches is 1.25 quarts, so it’s 25 % too big to qualify as TSA approved!

It doesn’t stop them printing “quart-sized bag” on the product though.

Most of the bags that look like this are oversized and sometimes not only by a little.

And yet does it really matter? I guess that depends on how strict the TSA is about enforcing their liquids bag rule at the security checkpoint.

How Strict Are The TSA About Quart Sized Bags?

This is the part where you find out all your worrying was probably a waste of time.

At the end of the day, it comes down to the judgment of the TSA officer who inspects your toiletries bag.

And in general, they are not looking very closely at the capacity of your toiletries bag.

You only need to look at the reviews on Amazon to see that while it’s almost impossible to find a clear transparent “TSA compliant” quart bag that’s actually 1-quart size they all have happy customers regardless.

Almost everyone is getting away with it!

Occasionally someone like Kate does get into trouble:

Or Crystal:

If you do want to try to travel with a larger toiletries bag I recommend buying one that isn’t flat. It’s much less noticeable and the dimensions are unlikely to be checked if the front-facing dimensions of the bag are roughly 6 x 9.

You’d probably waltz through with a bag that was 6 x 9 x 2 inches which is almost 2 quarts!

The TSA security officers just eyeball it and so long as it’s about the shape of a paperback book it’ll pass.

There is no measuring or mathematical modeling involved!

How Many Quart Size Bags Can You Carry On a Plane?

You can only carry on 1 liquids bag per passenger in your hand luggage.

Do All Carry On Liquids Have To Be In A Quart Size Bag?

Pretty much yeah. All liquids must be stored in bottles or containers less than 100 ml or 3.4 oz. You can have 1 baggie. And it’s only 1 bag per person.

If you want to take liquids that are greater than 3.4 oz you need to pack them in checked luggage. The only exceptions to this rule are baby formula, breast milk, or juice for infants.

Can I Bring A Gallon Bag At The Airport?

A gallon bag is 4 quarts. You might have problems using such a large baggie, even if it’s only a quarter full of your liquid items.

The Verdict

Why should manufacturers care about correctly sizing their toiletries bags if the TSA doesn’t care?

They shouldn’t. They will sell more toiletry bags if they supply larger bags that can hold more liquids.

If a tiny percentage of passengers have a problem it won’t hurt their profits when 99% of travelers get away with it.

The “3-1-1 rule” isn’t really a rule… It’s a rule of thumb. The TSA officers aren’t standing around with measuring tapes to measure your liquids bag. It’s only enormous violations of the 3-1-1 rule that get noticed.

This makes sense because if the TSA suddenly started rigorously enforcing quart bag rules the lines at security would be massive!

It’s much less noticeable to use a bag with a gusset to increase size than a huge looking flat bag like a gallon ziploc.

So it depends on you…

Do you want to be 100% compliant? Or do you want to try to sneak through some extra liquids like so many other travel mavericks?

Incidentally, while you are worrying about the dimensions of your quart size bag roughly 10 people turn up at the security check-point every day in the US with a loaded firearm. Go figure!

List of Items That Need to Be in a Quart-Size Bag for Travel

by Kathryn Walsh

Published on 23 May 2023

Most Toiletries

Food and drinks, exempt substances, outlawed liquids, gels and aerosols, other packing tips.

The TSA's rules about packing liquids, gels and aerosols are definitely inconvenient for travelers – but as you attempt to master the art of fitting five tons of toiletries in a small plastic bag, remember that it's for your safety above everything else. The 3-1-1 rule, which dictates how flight passengers can pack liquids, gels and aerosols in their carry-on luggage, was put in place after a 2006 plan to deploy liquid explosives on planes was thwarted. Familiarize yourself with the finer points of the rule to make sure that you, your toothpaste and other essentials in your carry-on bag make it through airport security without delay. Read below to understand what can go inside a TSA approved quart size bag!

Four criteria determine whether a given item belongs in your quart-sized bag. If it's going in a carry-on, if it's not on the TSA's list of forbidden items, if it's not one of a few exempt items and if it's a liquid, gel or aerosol, it must conform to the 3-1-1 rule. Under the rule, each passenger is allowed to pack a single 1-quart bag of liquids, gels and aerosols, each in a container of 3.4 ounces or smaller.

Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hair gel, face wash, hand sanitizer, skincare, lotion and moisturizers, toothpaste, hairspray, mousse, contact lens solution, shaving cream or lotion, aftershave and perfume/cologne all fall under the 3-1-1 rule. So do mascara, liquid foundation or coverup, nail polish, lip gloss, makeup remover and other similar cosmetics. By contrast, stick deodorant, lipstick and moist wipes don't come with restrictions. (Note that gel candles aren't allowed in carry-ons at all. Pack them in checked luggage.) be sure to check your toiletry bag before going through security to ensure it matches this rule.

A big bag of crackers and a packet of peanut butter make an easy-to-pack airplane snack – or do they? The crackers are fine, but peanut butter falls under the 3-1-1 heading. So do yogurt (including squeezable yogurt tubes) and other soft, paste-like foods such as applesauce, cream cheese, sauces and honey. Any beverages must also fit into the 1-quart bag, with the exception of those that are medically necessary or intended for a young child.

Breast milk, juice, baby formula and baby food are exempt from the 3-1-1 rule when you're traveling with an infant or toddler. The TSA allows passengers to carry as much of these liquids as they need through security, provided they pass the security screening process. Parents are also allowed to travel with breast milk in amounts greater than 3.4 ounces even when no child is present. Medications are exempt from the 3-1-1 rule, but must be screened by the TSA.

These guidelines only apply to items you bring through security. Drinks and other liquids, food and gels and aerosols purchased inside the secure area of the airport don't have to conform to the 3-1-1 rule. For additional information on this, consult the TSA website.

The TSA allows travelers to bring most types of liquids, gels and aerosols aboard a plane, but it does outright forbid a few items. Fuel of any kind, including that used for camp stoves, isn't allowed in carry-on or checked baggage. Neither is bear spray. Self-defense sprays and pepper sprays may be packed only in checked luggage and even then only if they are less than 2 percent by mass of tear gas and have a mechanism to prevent them from being sprayed accidentally. Each passenger is limited to one container of 4 ounces or smaller. The TSA also forbids travelers from packing spray paint and any flammable gel, liquid or aerosol paint. Disposable razors should also be plazed in your checked luggy, as they will be picked up on the x-ray machine and could be flagged as a potential weapon by a TSA Agent.

If you have larger liquids like sunscreen, snow globes, alcohol or other drinks, put them in your checked bag. Large items like this will not make its way past the security checkpoint and will send you back to the beginning, where you must dump out your items and go back through TSA. it is best to not be forgetful and to check your carry-on baggage, ensuring everything your travel-sized containers are up to snuff. This will make air travel so much easier and take stress away from you.

It is often best to write a packing list and comb through it, examining which items pass the TSA lquids rule and which must be placed in your checked baggage. If you need a liquid but don’t have a small enough bottle, amazon and local drug stores will have 3 ounce containers for purchase that are refillable. Most of the time this isn’t an issue, but double checking is always a good idea. Safe travels!

5 clear toiletry bags for travel that are TSA compliant

Caroline Tanner

Thanks to being a TSA PreCheck member for nearly a decade, I can't recall the last time a TSA agent asked me to remove my toiletry bag from my carry-on when passing through security. Not having to deal with rummaging through luggage to remove your toiletries (along with electronics) is just one of the many perks of TSA PreCheck, the expedited security program.

But unfortunately, PreCheck benefits do not extend internationally. In my experience, certain airports abroad, including London's Heathrow Airport (LHR) , are much stricter in enforcing the universal quart-sized toiletry bag rule. In fact, the last time I flew from Heathrow, a security agent actually made me empty my entire quart-sized bag, which admittedly had several of the mini-sized products from the hotel I had stayed at sticking out. (In my defense, the products in question were Le Labo from the London Edition in the West End.)

Even so, I stood there and watched him put every last item back into the two plastic bags he supplied. Although I was slightly irritated during this process, it was a good reminder to travel with a compliant toiletry bag and to not let the opportunity for free La Labo result in trying to cram nine bottles into your bag at the last minute.

When traveling in Europe, for example, passengers are restricted to a one-liter transparent plastic bag for their liquids, aerosols, drinks, toothpaste, creams, gels, etc., per the European Union . Domestically, you must put your liquids in a quart-sized bag (approximately 7 x 8 inches in size, though TSA does not specify measurement requirements), with each product less than 3.4 ounces, per the TSA 3-1-1 liquids rule.

Even if you are traveling abroad, all travelers departing from the U.S. must adhere to the quart-sized bag rule, which is why we've compiled this guide with some of our favorite clear TSA-compliant toiletry bags.

TPG's favorite carry-on toiletry bags

travel quart bag

Clear Toiletry Bag, Bagsmart 3 Pack , $11.99 at Amazon

travel quart bag

Since we love a deal here at TPG, let's start with one of the cheapest options on this list. Thanks to Bagsmart, you can purchase a three-pack of bags measuring 7.5 x 5.9 x 2.2 inches for just under $12.

"Bagsmart bags are inexpensive and have held up to my frequent use," says TPG family travel writer Tarah Chieffi, who also uses them abroad. "They are great for international travel when you often still have to remove your liquids from your luggage and put them through separately. And they come in a lot of fun colors so you can match them to your luggage."

Stasher Quart Bag, $19.99 at Stasher

travel quart bag

Another budget-friendly option comes to us from Stasher, which I can personally attest to as having high-quality yet affordable products — I've used the brand's Pocket Bag ($7.99) to hold my headphones when traveling. Thanks to the brand's range of reusable bags which meet any size needs, it has at least two options for TSA-friendly toiletry bags, such as the signature Quart Bag, measuring 8.75 x 7.5 inches.

"I started using them as my go-to toiletry bag because they're super durable, washable, see-through (so easy to find what you need inside) and they have a little stretch, which is great when you need to cram in just one or two extra things," TPG global features managing editor Melanie Lieberman told me.

She also likes the brand's stand-up bags, such as the Stand-Up Mini Bag ($17.99, 5.5 x 7.5 inches), whose flat bottoms allow the bags to stand up on their own, a feature that is hard to find.

The Clear Pouch Set , $45 at Away

travel quart bag

Away is known for its ubiquitous hardshell suitcases, including its top-rated carry-on, my personal favorite. Beyond suitcases, the brand has expanded into travel accessories, including its Clear Pouch Set, which in true Away style, features two TSA-approved bags, one large and one small, that are also spill-proof.

With a leather-like trim, these bags have a folded bottom that expands for extra room but still packs flat. The small one measures 7.3" x 0.8" x 4.3" inches with a 0.3 liter capacity, making it suitable for your liquids, while the larger one, at 8.66" x 0.8" x 5.3" inches with a 0.5 liter capacity, also meets TSA size requirements.

Plus, these bags fit seamlessly into the corresponding Away Toiletry Bag ( small and large versions are available online for $55 and $75, respectively) and — like all Away products — you can try this bag combo for free for 100 days and return at no cost if you are not satisfied. But based on my experience with Away products, you won't want to return it.

Small Clear Cosmetics Case , $75 at Cal Pak

travel quart bag

If you are concerned about see-through aesthetics yet still want to be able to carry on your liquids (which to be honest, I can relate to), consider the Mini Clear Cosmetics Case from Cal Pak for $75. At 8 x 4 x 6 inches, it still weighs less than a pound despite being more substantial than the other bags on this list.

"The Calpak Clear Cosmetic Case is large enough to hold all of your toiletries, but still small enough to fit in your luggage," says Tarah. "The separate compartments help you stay organized and because it's clear, it's easy to find what you are looking for."

With a range of classic colors (mauve, stone, caramel and black) and limited editions like the dragonfruit one currently available, this bag is sure to meet your style needs. It has a lay-flat carrying handle, a water-resistant lining and features two zippered compartments to effectively organize your items. And, it's covered by a one-year limited warranty.

If you ultimately need more space and decide to check a bag, Cal Pak also has a larger version of the Clear Cosmetics Case for $95.

Bottom line

Each of these toiletry bag options is TSA-compliant to meet the agency's 3-1-1 liquid rule and quart-size bag requirements, so you shouldn't have any issues using any of them, even if you are not a PreCheck member and have to remove it from your carry-on to go through TSA security.

Although you could technically use a plastic Ziploc quart bag, it's 2022, and we simply cannot be out there using single-use plastic every time we travel.

Remember that these are TPG's top choices for carry-on bags — TSA size requirements do not apply to checked bags. Be sure to stay tuned for our guide to the best larger toiletry bags.

Liquids Rule

You are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in your carry-on bag and through the checkpoint. These are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. Placing these items in the small bag and separating from your carry-on baggage facilitates the screening process. Pack items that are in containers larger than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters in checked baggage.

Any liquid, aerosol, gel, cream or paste that alarms during screening will require additional screening.

  • Medications
  • Infant and child nourishments

Inbound International Flights

You may carry duty free liquids in secure, tamper–evident bags, more than 3.4 oz or 100 ml in your carry-on bag if:

  • The duty free liquids were purchased internationally and you are traveling to the United States with a connecting flight.
  • The liquids are packed in a transparent, secure, tamper-evident bag by the retailer and do not show signs of tampering when presented to TSA for screening.
  • The original receipt for the liquids is present and the purchase was made within 48 hours.

The items inside the secure, tamper-evident bags must be screened and cleared. Any item that alarms or is unable to be screened will not be permitted in your carry-on bag. We recommend packing all liquids, gels, and aerosols that are over 3.4 oz or 100 ml in your checked baggage, even if they are in a secure, tamper-evident bag.

Last updated on January 24, 2024

Navigating the confusing world of travel requirements just got easier, because today we’re going to delve into everything you need to know about a quart size bag, from dimensions to usage within the realm of various travel regulations.

Embarking on a journey often involves meticulous packing, and understanding the capacity of a quart size bag is crucial for anyone aiming to breeze through airport security with liquids.

Equating to 32 ounces or roughly 946 milliliters , quart size bags, commonly measuring 7 by 8 inches , are the unsung heroes of travel, ensuring your carry-on essentials meet TSA standards while keeping your belongings neatly organized.

Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or planning your first trip, recognizing the practicality of these bags and their substitutes, like clear plastic or reusable silicone options, can transform your travel prep into a smooth and hassle-free experience.

Let’s dive into the details of how these quart-sized companions cater to your travel needs, offering examples and smart packing insights along the way.

Key takeaways:

  • A quart size bag holds 32 ounces or approximately 946 milliliters.
  • It is primarily used for holding liquids, gels, and aerosols in travel carry-ons.
  • The dimensions of a quart size bag are typically 7 inches by 8 inches.
  • Quart size bags serve multiple purposes including efficient packing and TSA compliance.
  • Alternatives to quart size bags include clear plastic storage bags and reusable silicone bags.

What's Inside

What Is a Quart Size Bag?

what is a quart size bag

A quart size bag is a pre-measured container commonly used to adhere to travel regulations, such as those enforced by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) . Specifically, this bag has a capacity of one quart , which is equivalent to 32 ounces or approximately 946 milliliters .

Its primary use is for holding liquids, gels, and aerosols in travel carry-ons, where each item within the bag must not exceed 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) . Transparent, sealable, and typically plastic, this container simplifies security checks at airports, ensuring passengers comply with carry-on liquid rules.

Its compact size and clear material help travelers quickly identify and access their personal care items when needed.

Dimensions of a Quart-Sized Bag

dimensions of a quart sized bag

A quart-size bag typically measures 7 inches by 8 inches , although the flexible nature of plastic bags means there can be slight variances. This size equates to a volume of 32 fluid ounces , or 946 milliliters – enough to hold a small collection of travel necessities or a modest amount of household items.

To visualize its capacity, consider that a quart-size bag could comfortably fit two standard brick-sized cream cheese packages side by side. It’s worth noting that when the bag is sealed, it should still maintain the quart dimension, so packing should account for the ability to close the bag fully.

Purpose of a Quart Size Bag

The quintessential use of quart-sized bags lies in bringing order and saving space. Whether for travel, storage, or organization, these handy bags serve multiple purposes:

  • Efficient Packing : They make the most of limited baggage space, ensuring travelers can pack essentials neatly and visibly.
  • TSA Compliance : For air travel, these bags adhere to security regulations, accommodating travel-sized liquids and gels in a transparent, resealable bag for quick screening.
  • Food Storage : In the kitchen, they are the go-to for portioning snacks, preserving leftovers, or even marinating foods, thanks to their leak-proof nature.
  • Crafts and Small Items : Beyond food and travel, they help keep small craft items, hardware, or office supplies in a discernible, contained manner, making them easy to find and use.

Their versatility extends their purpose beyond singular use, fitting seamlessly into daily routines and specialized tasks, simplifying the art of compartmentalization.

The TSA Approved Quart Size Bag Dimensions

Navigating airport security is smoother when you’re familiar with the TSA’s guidelines for liquids. Encased in a clear, resealable plastic bag, each passenger is allowed a single quart-sized bag. These bags measure 7 inches by 8 inches or a combined area of 56 square inches . To ensure compliance, typical freezer bags found in grocery stores often fit these dimensions, simplifying your packing process.

Keep in mind, the restriction isn’t just about size; it’s also about volume. Each container within the bag should hold no more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) . Balancing the container sizes with the quart bag dimensions maximizes your carry-on liquid allowance. This organized approach helps TSA agents quickly assess your belongings, contributing to a more efficient screening experience for everyone.

What Items Are Allowed in My TSA Approved Quart Size Bag?

Navigating airport security can be smoother when you know what’s permitted in your TSA-approved quart-size bag . Under the 3-1-1 liquids rule , each container should contain no more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) of liquid. Pack items like these to comply:

  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Body wash and lotions
  • Toothpaste and mouthwash
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Liquid makeup products such as foundation or mascara
  • Hair gel and hair spray
  • Creamy cosmetics like concealer or moisturizer

Remember to seal these containers in the clear bag to easily display them during security checks. Solid items like bar soaps or powders do not need to be in the quart-size bag, providing more space for your liquid essentials.

How to Pack a Quart Size Bag

Maximizing space while ensuring accessibility is key when packing your quart size bag. Start with travel-sized containers, which are typically 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less.

Arrange these bottles or tubes flat on the bottom for a stable base. Above this layer, place solids such as solid deodorants or makeup .

Seal the bag by pressing out excess air, which helps to compress items and provides a clear view when navigating security checkpoints. Remember, the bag should close comfortably—don’t force it shut. If it bulges or doesn’t seal, security may require you to remove items.

Keep frequently used items near the top for easy access. If traveling with someone, consider sharing the load to distribute liquids and gels evenly between bags.

Advantages of Using a Quart Size Bag

Quart size bags offer a blend of convenience and compliance, particularly for air travelers. They make security checks faster because Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials can quickly scan the clear plastic, leading to shorter wait times. Their standardized size simplifies packing by setting a limit on how much liquid you can carry, thus encouraging efficient packing habits.

These bags are reusable, cost-effective, and a go-to for leak prevention , shielding the rest of your luggage from potential spills. They’re not only for travelers; organize your everyday items such as office supplies or snacks . By using these bags, you’re not just adhering to regulations but also opting for a practical solution to carry and protect your essentials.

Alternatives to a Quart Size Bag

When a quart size bag isn’t the most practical option, several alternatives can get the job done. For bulkier items or longer trips, consider using clear plastic storage bags with a slider closure, as they offer more space and are often easier to seal. Reusable silicone travel bags present an eco-friendly choice; they are durable, leak-proof, and come in various sizes. For smaller or less liquid content, snack-size zip-top bags are a compact solution.

For non-liquid items, compression bags can save space and keep clothes organized, while dedicated packing cubes offer a tailored approach to sorting various types of travel essentials. Remember that while these alternatives may work for general packing, they may not meet the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulations for carry-on liquids. Always check the latest guidelines for the most suitable and compliant options.

Traveling With a Quart Size Bag: Dos and Don’ts

Traveling with a quart size bag streamlines your journey, ensuring your carry-on essentials comply with security guidelines. Here are some practical tips:

  • Check airline regulations: Confirm your airline’s restrictions on liquids to avoid last-minute repacking at the security checkpoint.
  • Use clear, resealable bags: A transparent bag allows security officers to quickly examine the contents without needing to open it.
  • Organize your items: Place similar items together for easy access. Use travel-sized containers for liquids, each no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).
  • Prioritize essential items: Pack only what you need during the flight—medications, sanitizers, and basic cosmetics.
  • Prepare for inspection: Have your quart size bag ready to place in the bin as you approach the security line to speed up the process.
  • Overpack: Avoid forcing items into the bag. It should close comfortably without bulging.
  • Include prohibited items: Familiarize yourself with the no-fly list to prevent confiscation of belongings.
  • Neglect to refresh knowledge: Security measures evolve; stay informed about current TSA requirements before each trip.
  • Dismiss bag maintenance: Keep the quart size bag clean and intact to ensure a hassle-free experience. Replace it when it shows signs of wear.

Remember, the quart size bag is a security measure designed to make everyone’s journey safer. Following these guidelines ensures a more pleasant travel experience.

Difference Between a Quart Size Bag & a Sandwich Bag

Understanding the distinction between quart size bags and sandwich bags is crucial, especially when preparing for air travel or food storage. Both types of bags are frequently made from similar materials; however, there are key differences:

  • Size Specifications: A quart size bag typically measures 7 inches by 8 inches, holding about 32 ounces, or 1 quart of content. On the other hand, a sandwich bag usually measures around 6.5 inches by 5.875 inches and is designed to hold a standard sandwich.
  • Usage Scenarios: Quart size bags are often used for travel, especially to conform to TSA liquid regulations. Sandwich bags, being smaller, are best suited for packing individual snacks or sandwiches.
  • Capacity: The quart size bag’s larger allowance fits travel-sized bottles up to 3.4 ounces each. In contrast, a sandwich bag is tailored to snugly fit a single sandwich rather than multiple small items.

Remember, when packing liquids in carry-on luggage, ensuring you use a TSA-approved quart size bag for a smooth security checkpoint experience is a must. Keep these differences in mind, and you’ll be set for both travel and daily lunch prep.
