How to Manually Extend or Retract an Electric Slide-Out System

How to Manually Extend or Retract an RV’s Electric Slide-Out System

RVs with retractable slide-outs are a very popular way to maximize the interior living space, while also giving you a more compact, streamlined rig while driving down the road.

You see them most often in fifth-wheel camper trailers and motorhomes. Though in recent years they have become increasingly popular in travel trailers.

There are even a few pop-up camper trailers that now have a retractable slide-out section built into them.

Though just like anything with moving parts, it is entirely possible for an RV’s slide-out system to get stuck, breakdown or even fail at the worst possible time.

Chances are it might even happen when you are at a campground, remote campsite or RV campground that doesn’t have a mechanic with RV slide-out experience.

If you happen to be at your intended campsite and you find your RV slide-out section simply isn’t responding, you might be able to manually extend it without engaging the electric components that normally drive it.

How To Manually Set Up An RV Retractable Slide-Out

If you are at your intended campsite and you are hoping to simply set it up, without ruining your entire trip, you might be able to manually extend the slide-out section.

This is not the ideal time to be dealing with a problem like this, but you might be able to set up camp, and give yourself some time to troubleshoot the entire RV slide-out section.

If you find yourself in this position, you might be able to use the following steps to manually extend the RV slide-out using the following steps.

  • Step 1: Make sure to park the RV in a spot that is completely clear of obstructions. Then take the time to level the RV properly before attempting to open the slide-out.
  • Step 2: Take a close look at the RV’s house battery to make sure it is fully charged. Inspect the connections to make sure everything is hooked up tightly and there aren’t any corrosion problems preventing the electrical system from operating properly. If there are clear corrosion issues or a noticeably loose connection, make sure to clean and/or tighten the hardware.
  • Step 3:Press down and hold the In-Out switch that operates the RV’s power-retractable slide out system. If it does nothing, then you can turn to the manual override system.
  • Step 4:Locate the slide-out motor underneath the slide-out section. If you aren’t certain of where it is, you can refer to the RV’s owner’s which should have a diagram that notes the exact location.
  • Step 5:Carefully disengage the slide-out sections brake assembly from the motor. You can do this by using a screwdriver to remove the screws that directly connect the brake assembly to the motor itself. Just make sure to safely store the screws, as you will certainly need to use them again.
  • Step 6: Set the brake assembly aside, in some place safe and dry.
  • Step 7: Locate the crank extension. It should be on either the inside or on the outside of the frame near the RV’s slide-out section. If you can’t easily spot it, you should again be able to find it in the RV’s owner’s manual.
  • Step 8: Insert and attach the RV slide-out sections crank handle to the crank extension mechanism. If for some reason the crank handle isn’t available or was lost, you can improvise with a box wrench or a socket and ratchet.
  • Step 9:Turn the crank extension by hand to manually extend or retract the RV’s slide-out.
  • Step 10:Carefully reattach the brake assembly to the slide-out motor by reconnecting the saved screws. Make sure to securely tighten each one with the screwdriver. This will prevent the slide-out from accidentally moving.

If you can’t figure out what has caused the slide-out section malfunction by the time it comes to pack up camp, you can use these steps in reverse to retract the RV’s slide-out section for the long drive back home.

How To Troubleshoot An RV Slide-Out Problem

How To Troubleshoot An RV Slide-Out Problem

Okay, let’s say that you either managed to manually set up your campsite, or you spotted the problem with your RV’s power slide-out system and you are back home where you can try to fix it yourself.

The good news is, that there are indeed some things you can try on your own before you need to call in or bring the RV in to a professional repair service.

Double-Check The Power Source

When you are at an RV park with shore power, the staff often plugs the RV into the power post or pedestal.

If the RV’s power retractable system runs off the shore power connection, a problem in the shore power system might be at fault.

This could be something as simple as a loose connection, a loose wire, a damaged plug or a larger problem with the RV park’s shore power system.

It could even be something as simple as a thrown GFCI that is preventing the circuit from completing itself.

Inspect The RV’s Circuit Breakers Or Fuse Box

These days most RV’s use circuit breakers, though there are still some older RVs on the road that have a traditional fuse box.

If a fuse or a circuit breaker connecting the power retractable slide-out system has burned out or thrown, then it could be preventing power from getting to the mechanical components.

Check For Corrosion On Fuses Or Circuit Breakers And Clean

Acid accumulation and corrosion are a real concern with some older RV’s.

If your RV is older than 7 to 10 years, you might want to also double check the connections in the circuit panel for signs of corrosion.

Though this is something better done at home with the power off than at a rustic campground deep in the back woods.

  • Step 1: Close all of the circuit breakers, including the main input breaker.
  • Step 2: You then need to completely disconnect the 110VAC power from a power post or shore power connection.
  • Step 3: At that point, you can carefully remove the electrical panel screws with a screwdriver and pull out the panel.
  • Step 4: Carefully inspect the back for acid accumulation on the connector tabs and wire terminals. Clean with water blended into a paste with a teaspoon of baking soda.
  • Step 5: Let all surfaces are dry before reconnecting everything and restoring the power.

Inspect The Power Converter

If the previous trouble shooting steps have yielded little to no results, then it might be the RV’s power converter.

  • Step 1:  Make sure to disconnect the 110 Volt AC power.
  • Step 2:  Visually inspect the RV’s power converter for signs of scorching or white flaky acid accumulation.
  • Step 3:  If you see obvious signs of a damaged or badly corroded power converter, you should contact the nearest, qualified RV repair technician.

While a problem with an RV’s power retractable slide-out can certainly put a damper on your vacation, there are still a few troubleshooting steps you can try to figure out, and possibly correct the problem.

In a pinch you might even be able to improvise a manual retraction or extension of the faulty slide-out section to still enjoy your vacation or at least drive home safely.

If you do feel like you are in over your head, there’s no shame in calling in the professionals to help repair your RV’s power-retractable slide-out’s normal function.

Common RV Slide Out Problems and How To Fix Them

Common RV Slide Out Problems and How To Fix Them

  • BEGINNERS GUIDE

G. Yoganand

If you own an RV or have owned one before, then you know how bad a problem with the slide-out can be. RV slide-out problems are rather common.

Nevertheless, if you stay up to date with your RV’s maintenance schedule, in addition to routine servicing, you won’t be stressing out as often.

Slide outs in travel trailers or motorhomes definitely increase the space tremendously but they also come with issues that can make you feel frustrated.

In this article, we will look at the common RV slide out issues, how to fix them, and the much it’ll cost you to get the job done.

RV slide out leaking

Sometimes the hydraulic system which powers the RV slide out may have a leak.

RV leaking at the slide out is a very common problem and it can get very frustrating if you don’t get it fixed early. I had earlier covered this topic as a separate detailed guide itself, check it out.

How to Fix it

Check the hydraulic fluid level in the reservoir.

You should be aware that when the system is engaged, i.e., when the slide-out is out and the leveling legs down, the fluid level will be lower in the reservoir.

If the slide-out is fully retracted and the leveling legs are up, the hydraulic fluid level should be high, near the top of the reservoir.

If you note that the pump runs but the slide-out remains retracted while the fluid level in the reservoir is low, then there is a high likelihood of a leak.

Try to follow through with the hydraulic lines to establish where the leak might be. The owner’s manual will also contain explicit instructions on how to troubleshoot the hydraulic system.

If you identify a leak, you should have that section replaced or mended at the repair shop. The cost will vary depending on whether the hydraulic line needs a replacement or repair, and the amount of hydraulic fluid required for a top-up.

If there are no leaks, a valve actuator may have failed. In such cases, the pump runs without pushing the fluid. This can lead to a bigger problem- pump cavitation, if not addressed in time. You should turn the actuator manually, typically by using either a screwdriver or an Allen key to close or open it. You need to perform this task carefully since the valves are quite delicate.

RV slide-out will not retract

RV slide-out may fail to retract for two reasons, a problem with the control switch, or insufficient power to the pump motor.

Begin by checking whether the control switch is in the proper working condition. Then check whether the pump motor is receiving enough power. If the control switch isn’t supplying enough power to the pump, you need to replace the switch.

If both the control switch and the motor are running, but the slide-out won’t come in, check the retract valve for damages and repair (or replace) if any.

You can do the replacement yourself, for it’ll only involve unscrewing the damaged one and replacing it with a new one. ensure he system is not powered before replacing the valve.

The cost of an RV retract valve may range between $50 to $200, depending on your specific RV model.

RV slide-out making noise

The slide-out may produce some noise when in operation due to a couple of reasons, including:

  • Track misalignment
  • Too little lubrication
  • Using the wrong lubricant
  • Worn out slide mechanism
  • Debris like ice and snow on the slide toppers

For track misalignment or a worn slide mechanism, you will need to take your RV to a repair shop for specialized service. The cost will vary depending on the extent of damage and any parts you may have to replace.

Your RV user manual specifies what lubricant and how much of it you should apply on the track. Ensure you lubricate as per these instructions.

If you are camping out during the winter, you’ll need to clear off the ice or snow manually from the slide tracks or the slide toppers. If you force the motor to do extra work pushing through the snow, you will severely shorten the motor windings’ lifespan.

RV slide-out switch problem

You may notice the slide-out doesn’t make even the slightest movement when you operate the switch. Such may be a problem with the control switch itself.

Now, if your RV has several slide-outs, try the other switches to see if they are functional. If they operate, then you need to replace the failed switch.

If they also fail to actuate the slide-outs, then there could be a problem with the power supply to the entire slide-out circuitry. Check for any short-circuits and correct them accordingly.

An RV control switch will cost you anywhere between $5 to $100 depending on the quality and the RV model. If you do not have the skills to do the job, hire an electrician do it for as low as $10.

RV slide out problems clicking noise

There are usually two common issues whenever you hear a clicking noise when operating the slide-out. One of the issues could be a partially charged battery.

You should note that most slides will function only when the battery is fully charged, even if you are connected to the shore power. In such cases, the slide-out system will only click without moving.

Another issue can be either when the motor gears are broken from inside the gearbox, the shear pin is broken, or the relay is blown out.

If you are out camping far from any repair shop, you can still retract the slide-out manually.

If the motor gear is broken, replacing it should cost you upwards of $800. This price is dependent on the RV model and the repair shop.

RV slide goes out but not in

The most common cause for this problem is usually a misalignment in the electrical motor gears. There could also be an electrical issue that causes a broken circuit during sliding out. This would cut the power required to retract the slide in. This happens mostly with two-position momentary arm switches.

Check the connections to ensure the wires that travel with the slide are not short-circuiting or broken.

RV slide-out is crooked

Whenever the slide-out looks or feels crooked, it can be a gear misalignment or an issue with the timing gear.

With the right tools and the RV owner’s manual, you can fix the crooked slide out from the comfort of your home (I’m assuming you don’t carry all the repair gear during the camping trip).

Check the battery and fuses first. If all is fine, go ahead to change any broken parts. These parts can be sourced from the local store, but the prices can vary significantly depending on the individual part and your RV model.

If you think some parts should be repaired, or you don’t have the handy skills to change parts, hire a professional to fix the slideout for you. Again, the cost of this service will depend on the amount of work to be done and the expertise required.

RV slide-out motor failure

Motor failure is one of the worst problems that an RV slide-out system can experience. The motor may fail to function due to an open electrical connection, a short circuit, or a tripped circuit breaker.

If you have several slide-outs powered by a separate motor, then a tripped breaker may not be the case if one of the motors stops. The way around this situation is by testing the failed motor.

With a multimeter, test the supply terminals to see if the right amount of current is flowing to the motor.

If indeed there is power, test the motor terminals for continuity and resistance. If the resistance is higher than usual, or there is no electrical continuity, the motor may have blown out. You will need to get the motor rewound or replace it.

RV slide-out motors are priced from $150 to $700 on average, but the exact price depends on the motor rating, the supplier, and the shipping cost if any.

If you do not have the skills, have a qualified electrician replace the motor for you.

RV slide-out goes in but not out

Misalignment of the motor gears is the main cause of this issue. An open electrical connection may also cause a problem with retraction.

For a hydraulically operated slide-out system, loss of pressure can cause the slide-out to fail to retract. The pressure loss is in most cases caused by a leak within the hydraulic lines. If this is the case, have a professional check and repair the system for you.

If the problems happen at the campground, you can still try to push the slide out manually, but carefully not to damage the delicate parts.

If it feels jammed, call in an expert. Of course, this will cost you more, but isn’t it worth the money rather than putting yourself and other motorists at risk by driving with a protruding slide out?

RV slide-out keeps stopping

This happens when there is a loose electrical connection.

Check the power supply to the motor. If the circuit is totally fine, but the intermittent stops persist, try resetting the breaker. Automatic resetting breakers will often drop if there is an extra load (caused by inadequate lubrication in most cases).

The battery may also be too low to sustain the motor through the sliding out time. Ensure the battery is fully charged and operate the slide-out once again.

RV slide out moving very slowly

Inadequate lubrication is the most common reason for a sluggishly moving slide out. Another cause could be a misalignment of the slide-out and the track.

Applying a suitable lubricant should help with smoother movement. If it doesn’t, check the alignment.

If you still do not get the desired results, have a professional check the motor for wear or loss of power.

An inspection will often be quoted separately, or inclusively with the repairs. Call several repair shops and compare the fees before deciding where to take your RV.

RV slide-not closing all the way

Sometimes the slide may not close fully at the top or at the bottom.

This is usually an issue with an adjustment which you should not attempt to solve on your own if you do not have experience with such. Trying to adjust it could offset the slide too much, causing it to graze the ceiling or the floor when operating. You certainly don’t want to mess your RV further!

You should apply some wax (preferably carnauba wax) on the slide walls to have the slide fully retracted and then take your RV to a service shop.

Again, the repair cost depends on where you take the RV for service and the amount of work required to fix the issue.

RV slide out misalignment

The first sign of misalignment in the slide-out mechanism is a jamming slide. The slide-out mechanism can be adjusted for alignment and smoother movement on the top and bottom tracks.

Due to the delicate nature of the system, it’s best to engage an expert to adjust the slide out for you. You can do it yourself if you have the skills and experience.

Misalignment will mostly stem from improper or inadequate lubrication.

After the system is properly aligned, lubricate the moving parts.

Ensure any seals are replaced after lubrication to keep dust and other debris out.

Check the manufacturer’s instructions on the right type and amount of lubricant to apply.

The total cost of fixing the misalignment and lubrication will depend on the charge per individual repair service, and the cost of the lubricants.

Jayco RV slide-out issues

The most common issue in Jayco RVs is the slide-out not extending or retracting. Insufficient power is often the most common cause of this problem.

Check the battery power level and charge if it’s low. Some other things you can check include the wiring and the fuses/breakers.

Foreign objects on the tracks, insufficient lubrication, and leaks are other common issues with Jayco RVs. You can troubleshoot and solve these problems as described earlier under common issues.

Keystone RV slide out issues

Keystone RVs experience common slide-out issues with Jayco RVs- the most common problem being insufficient electrical power. This results in the slide-out not extending or retracting.

Just like with Jayco RVs, start by ensuring the battery is fully charged and then ensure the electrical circuit is complete. If the slide still doesn’t move, check with the other common issues described above.

Hydraulic fluid leaks, foreign objects on the tracks, and insufficient lubrication are other common problems with Keystone RVs. You can troubleshoot these issues yourself but engage a professional whenever in doubt.

Despite providing us with the ultimate camping experience, RVs can sometimes be a headache when the slide-outs don’t slide as we want them to. If any of the above issues happen to you, you at least know where to begin or when to call in a professional.

As a reminder, dedicate a certain spot in your RV for the basic repair and service tools. These can be an adjustable wrench, some lubricant, and the famous WD40.

Enjoy RVing!

Help! My RV Slide-Out Is Stuck… How Do I Adjust The Slide-Out Manually?

5th wheel trailers , motorhomes , predicaments and emergencies , rv slide-outs , travel trailers.

Is your RV slide-out stuck?

Is your RV slide-out stuck? Here's how to fix it.

Unfortunately, a stuck RV slide-out tends to happen fairly often . And the longer you own your RV, the more likely you will run into an RV slide-out adjustment issue .

More than once, I have seen RVs going down the road with the slide-outs stuck out — because they couldn’t figure out how to get them back in manually.

As much as slide-outs improve livability in an RV, the mechanical issues can be a huge negative.

Following are a few ways to manually adjust a slide-out that won’t budge…

First of all, don’t panic. Well, okay… maybe panic just a little.

Slide-outs usually end up being one of the more troublesome items on any RV — especially as it gets older.

Things flex, parts wear, and it’s only a matter of time before your slide-out is not going to do what you expect it to do.

And, of course, it will stop working at the most inopportune time!

3 Simple Ways To Fix A Failed RV Slide-Out

If you’ve pushed the slide-out button in your RV only to have nothing happen, start by checking these 3 simple things first:

#1 – Make sure the fuse isn’t blown.

Blowing the fuse for the slide-out is a common failure. If you hold the button for a split second too long, the fuse will blow in order to save the motor. Just replace the fuse and the slide-out should move properly again. (And always carry spare fuses with you!)

#2 – Make sure the RV is level.

Having your RV reasonably level is important to avoid excessive stress on the slide-out mechanism. If your RV slide-out is stuck, make sure that your RV is level .

#3 – Make sure the RV battery is charged.

If your RV battery is low, there may not be enough power to drive the slide-out motor. If possible, run your slide-outs while you are connected to shore power — to minimize the effect of a heavy electrical draw .

How To Manually Adjust RV Slide-Outs

If you’ve confirmed that you have power going to the RV slide-out motor but it still doesn’t work, then it’s time to manually adjust the slide-out.

Keep in mind, there are lots of different drive mechanisms for RV slide-outs:

  • Some require nothing more than for you to use the supplied hand crank to move the slide-out in or out.
  • Others may require that you cut an access hole through the bottom of your RV to find the motor — so you can then use a wrench to turn the gearing .
  • Some have cables and gear-driven mechanisms that can manually be adjusted .
  • Others require that you remove the drive motor to allow the slide-out to be pushed in manually.

For me to give generalized instructions that will solve all RV slide-out problems is impossible. The best I can do is to provide links and examples for a number of different slide-out systems — and you can use whichever one applies to your RV.

Lippert RV Slide-Out Manual Operation Tips

Lippert slide-out mechanisms are popular on RV travel trailers.

Scenario #1:

In most cases, there is a hole provided through the frame of the RV — where you insert a hand crank in order to manually operate the slide-out mechanism.

This is the hand crank on my RV trailer. It's behind the steps and it's used to manually adjust the RV slide-out.

On my travel trailer, this hole is hidden behind the entry steps — which must be extended to allow access.

Scenario #2:

If there is no access hole, then you will need to cut open a section of the RV’s underbelly covering — to gain access to the rv slide-out motor . Then, you can manually turn the mechanism to adjust the slide-out.

In this next video, you can see how to access the RV slide-out motor through the underbelly of the slide-out when no access hole is provided for hand cranking. There is also information on how to manually operate some hydraulic mechanisms. Towards the end of the video, they also cover cable-driven mechanisms:

How To Adjust Slide-Outs With Multiple Motors

Another type of slide-out mechanism has multiple motors attached inside the RV — which drive on a cog rail, mounted on the side of the slide-out.

To manually retract this type of RV slide-out, the motor that has failed needs to be removed .

While running the other motor, you push the failed side of the RV slide-out in by hand — as seen in this video:

Here is another excellent video showing how to retract a failed Schwintek slide-out mechanism:

Hydraulic RV Slide-Out Manual Operation Advice

Many older and simpler hydraulic systems can be manually operated by pushing in on the solenoid stub that protrudes out of the valve body housing .

Normally, the valve is operated by electromagnets. But in the event of control failure, you should be able to manually activate the valves.

If the electric hydraulic pump has failed, it may become necessary to disconnect hydraulic lines and manually adjust the slide-out. Have a bucket handy… this will be a messy process!

Although no two systems operate the same, this video shows how to bypass an electrically failed hydraulic slide-out mechanism:

The Bottom Line

Slide-out manufacturers use different systems. So by no means is there a one-size-fits-all approach to fixing an RV slide-out that’s stuck.

It’s imperative to do your homework beforehand — to avoid being stuck in a bad situation. Do you know what you would do if your RV slide-out stuck tomorrow?

I always recommend that it’s best to find a knowledgeable technician (through an RV dealer) before you try to “force” something — or take the advice of another camper who claims to know everything there is to know about your particular RV. The number of fools in the world far outnumber the experts.

Slide-out mechanisms are not simple or straightforward, and it takes a lot of mechanical experience to determine the right course of action each time the RV slide-outs fail.

The time to figure out what you’re going to do in this situation is before it happens.

After you’ve manually retracted the RV slide-out… if you had disconnected any of the mechanisms that keep the slide-out retracted, then you will need to block the slide-out from creeping back out while transporting. Placing a length of 2×4 between the interior wall and the lip of the slide-out will keep it secure!

Are rv supports a good idea… or not.

Most manufacturers say not to use RV slide-out supports — which are stabilizers designed specifically to prevent slide-outs from sagging.

RV slide-out supports are stabilizers that keep the slide-out from sagging.

Generally speaking, you shouldn’t put any sort of support underneath the slides unless the manufacturer recommends it . (Check your owner’s manual.)

Because if one of your RV stabilizers or jacks settles, the one underneath the slide may not settle.

This would raise the slide-out, relative to the main body of the RV — which could cause expensive damage to the slide-out or to frame of your RV.

Troubleshooting RV Slide Goes Out But Not In (8 Reasons)

A camper’s biggest nightmare is a stuck RV slide that goes out but not in. There could be a lot of reasons for such occurrences that can catch you off guard.

Some major causes for a stuck RV slide are an electric motor failure, misalignment of the controller, dead track or cable, etc. Whereas, if you are lucky, your RV could have been facing easier issues such as power and electrical failures.

Thus, stick to the article to learn in-depth about all possible troubleshooting for a stuck RV slide so that you can save time and money.

RV Slide Goes Out But Not In

8 Reasons Why RV Slide Go Out But Not Back In: Troubleshooting

If you suddenly find out that your RV slide is stuck in the extended position and won’t retract, you need to stop panicking.

Here are some of the most potential causes and solutions for such instances you can follow to get your extended RV back in.

1. Power Failure to the Motor

The whole concept of an RV depends on the power supplied by the battery. Hence, power failure is the most common reason that makes your RV slide into an extended position.

RV enthusiasts have found that after traveling and using the battery a lot, the charge deteriorates quickly.

Since the electrical motors require a lot of torque to push or pull the slide, they seek power from the battery.

Hence, when your RV battery fails to provide sufficient power, you might face issues retracting the slide back in.

Solving the issue is quite simple. You can override the main connection to the electrical motor through the controller module from a direct 30 AMP power source or jump the connection.

This will temporarily help you get your RV slide back in and give you time to recharge the battery.

Read Also: 6 Easy Solutions For RV Slide-Out Motor Problems

2. Electrical Motor Failure

Most modern RVs use multiple electrical motors to drive the slide in or out. These motors have high torque and power-producing capacities. It has been reported by many RV users that their slide-out motors get damaged when the slide is extended out from the vehicle.

There could be many causes for such motor failures, such as aging, wear out of mechanical parts, putting excessive load on the slide, etc.

If you are one of those unfortunate ones, your RV might be facing a similar issue, causing the slide to go out but not in anymore.

To solve this, you would need to replace the motor with the original one, which might cost you more than $100.

However, if your RV has a manual override system, you can retract the slide back in and take it to the mechanic.

3. Physical Obstruction

Your RV slides use tracks, or cables for extension and retraction. It is often reported by users that slides go out but not if the track is obstructed by obstacles.

This is a common phenomenon in the rack and pinion system of the RV slides. The issue is quite easy and cheap to resolve. First, you need to visually inspect all the tracks.

If any objects are stuck in the moving parts, clean the area by removing them. Be careful while doing this, as it may damage the track.

Afterward, apply the recommended lubrication to the track before attempting to push back the slide.

4. Misalignment & Damaged Sliding Track

Nowadays, most RVs use a rack and pinion system or cable system for pushing or pulling back the slide. These slides roll on metallic tracks with grooves and teeth.

Hence, if your RV slide tracks get physically damaged, such as broken, bent, misaligned, etc., they won’t go in because the damaged part would prevent it.

Users have observed that putting excessive pressure on the slide or operating the slide in a parking lot or unleveled area causes such damages.

The only way to fix it is to replace the dead track at the dealership, which could be one of the most expensive repairs for an RV.

5. Damage in the Gearbox

Electric motors drive the slide in or out, supplying power through the gears to the track. These gears are mostly made of polyurethane and nylon.

As a result, RV owners have found that over time, these gear teeth tend to corrode, break apart, or crack. Hence, the motor fails to pull the slide back inside the RV.

This can be for many reasons, including putting heavy weight on the slide or lack of maintenance on the track. Ultimately, excessive pressure on the gears of your RV can break them down.

To resolve this, all you need to do is get similar gear from the dealership and replace it with the older one. And you are back on track.

6. Electrical Failures

Since most modern RV slides are electrically driven using a motor, your RV can encounter electric failures to and from the motor. The most probable causes include:

  • Mistiming between the motors
  • An electric short between the motors and the control module
  • Bad connection from the control module
  • Broken Wires

You need to explicitly look for the actual cause to solve this problem. Take a peek in the control module and read the flashing lights to get the error code.

One of the common solutions used by RV enthusiasts is to reset the control module by pressing the button 6 times and holding it at 7. It is better to recheck all the electric connections before attempting the reset. Perhaps you can start by checking and replacing the fuse as well.

7. Damaged Switch

Although it happens rarely, if the switch used to retract the slide gets damaged, the slide will go out but not on it.

But worry not, replacing the switch can get your slide back in easily, and without spending much.

You can attempt to repair it yourself, provided you have the necessary tools and a replacement switch.

8. Mislabelling

Improper leveling of the RV is not good for the motor or the slide itself. It can cause the slide to go out erratically. Hence, it gets stuck when the slide goes out and when you push the switch, it won’t budge back in.

To solve this, RV owners use a leveler to keep the RV steady and reset the control module to adjust the motor timing. As a result, it helps to get a slide return by spending little.

RV Slide Motor Runs but the Slide Does Not Move[What to Do]

If you’ve ever experienced an issue with your RV slide motor, you know how frustrating it can be. You try to move the slide and nothing happens – the motor runs but the slide doesn’t move.

When this happens, it’s usually because something is wrong with the drive gear or track assembly. In this blog post, we’ll explain what might be causing your slide not to move and provide some tips for fixing the problem. Let’s get started!

Possible causes of RV slide motor runs but the slide does not move

– Blown fuse

– Slide itself

If the fuse is not the issue, then you will need to determine whether it is the motor, the gearbox, or the slide itself that is causing the problem. Once you have determined which component is not working properly, you can then begin to troubleshoot that specific issue.

Checking if the Fuse has Blown

The first step is to check if the fuse has blown. This can be done by testing the continuity of the fuse with a multimeter. If the fuse is not the issue, then you will need to determine whether it is the motor, the gearbox, or the slide itself that is causing the problem.

Determining if the Motor is the Issue

If the fuse is not the issue, then you will need to determine whether it is the motor, the gearbox, or the slide itself that is causing the problem. One way to test whether the motor is working properly is to disconnect it from the power source and attempt to rotate the shaft by hand. If the shaft is difficult to rotate or if it does not rotate at all, then the motor may be the issue.

Determining if the Gearbox is the Issue

Another way to test whether the gearbox is working properly is to remove the cover and attempt to rotate the gears by hand. If the gears are jammed or if they do not rotate smoothly, then the gearbox may be the issue.

Determining if the Slide itself is the Issue

If the fuse is not the issue, and both the motor and gearbox seem to be working properly, then the slide itself may be the issue. One way to test this is to try to move the slide by hand. If the slide is difficult to move or if it does not move at all, then the slide may be the issue.

How to Troubleshoot RV slide Out Problems

Here are a few tips and insights on what you can do to diagnose your RV slide-out problems. This will help you determine if it’s a problem you can tackle on your own or if you should call for help.

Whether you have a class A, class B, class C, fifth wheel, or travel trailer , let’s look at some of the most common RV slide-out problems.

RV Slideout Switch Has Failed

RV slideouts are a great convenience when travelling and can make your RV feel much more spacious. However, if the slideout switch fails, it can be a very frustrating experience. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to troubleshoot the problem.

  • First, check to make sure that the slideout is properly lubricated.
  • If it is not, you may need to apply some lubricant to the tracks.
  • You can also try manually moving the slideout in and out to see if the problem is with the switch or with the slideout itself.

If neither of these solutions works, you may need to consult a professional RV mechanic. But with a little troubleshooting, you should be able to get your slideout working again in no time.

Power Issues

Make sure your battery is in good condition and has enough power to operate your slide. If it doesn’t, you may need to purchase a new battery or have your current one serviced.

If you’ve ever been RVing, you know that one of the most convenient features is the slide-outs. With the touch of a button, you can expand your living space by creating more room inside your RV.

However, operating the slide-outs can be a power-intensive activity, and if you’re not careful, you can easily overload your RV’s electrical system. If you find yourself with slide-out power issues, there are a few things you can do to troubleshoot the problem.

  • First, check to see if any other appliances are drawing power from the same circuit.
  • If so, turn them off and try operating the slide-outs again.

If you’re plugged into shore power or a generator, check the voltage at the outlet to make sure it is within the correct range. Most slides require between 108 and 132 volts to operate properly. If the voltage is too low, the slide may not extend fully or may retract on its own. If the voltage is too high, this could damage the slide motor.

If the problem persists, you may need to upgrade your RV’s electrical system to accommodate the additional power needs of the slide-outs. In either case, it’s always best to consult with a qualified RV technician to ensure that your RV is safe and operating properly.

Slideout Electric Motor Has Failed

You’re all set up at your campsite, and you go to put your RV’s slideout out, only to find that the electric motor has failed. What do you do? If you’re lucky, you may be able to find a replacement motor at a nearby RV parts store.

However, if you’re in a remote location, you may need to get resourceful.

  • One option is to use a come-along or ratchet strap to extend the slide manually. This can be a time-consuming and labour-intensive process, but it will get the job done.
  • Another option is to use your RV’s hydraulic system if it has one. Most RVs with hydraulic slideouts have a hand pump that can be used to extend the slide in an emergency.

Of course, this method should only be used as a last resort, as it can damage your RV’s hydraulic system. In any case, with a little effort, you should be able to get your slideout extended even if your electric motor has failed.

Troubleshooting the Slide

If the slide is the issue, then there are a few things that you can try in order to troubleshoot the problem. One thing that you can try is to lubricate the rails. Another thing that you can do is to check the alignment of the slide. Finally, you may need to replace the slide itself if it is damaged.

Troubleshooting the Gearbox

If the gearbox is the issue, then there are a few things that you can try in order to troubleshoot the problem. One thing that you can try is to clean the gears. Another thing that you can try is to check the bearings. Finally, you can also try to replace the gearbox.

Tips for preventing this problem from happening in the future

Here are some tips to prevent RV slide-out problems:

  • Regularly check the seals around your slide-outs and make sure they are free of dirt, debris, and water. If you notice any cracks or gaps, seal them with caulk or weather stripping.
  • Inspect the tracks that your slide-outs travel on and make sure they are clear of any buildup. Lubricate the tracks with a silicone-based lubricant to help keep them moving smoothly.
  • Make sure the weight of your RV is evenly distributed. This will help to prevent strain on the motors and tracks, and make it easier for the slide-outs to deploy and retract.

By following these simple tips, you can help to prevent RV slide-out problems from happening in the future.

How do I know if my slide-out motor is bad?

There are a few things you can check to determine if your RV slide-out motor is bad.

First, check the fuses. If they are all intact and not blown, then check the circuit breaker. If the breaker is not tripped, then check for power at the motor itself. If there is no power at the motor, then the motor is bad and will need to be replaced.

Another way to tell if the RV slide-out motor is bad is by trying to move the slide manually. If it moves easily and smoothly, then the motor is most likely not the problem. If it is hard to move or does not move at all, then the motor may be the problem.

Another way to tell if the RV slide-out motor is bad is by listening for a clicking sound when you try to move the slide. If you hear a clicking sound, then that is an indication that the motor is not working properly.

If you have checked all of these things and are still unsure if the motor is bad.

RV slideouts are a great way to add extra living space to your vehicle, but they can also be a source of problems if not properly maintained. In this article, we have talked about some ways to troubleshoot common RV slide-out problems.

We have also provided tips for preventing these problems from happening in the future. By following these simple tips, you can help to keep your RV slide-outs in good working order for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can you drive an rv with the slide-out.

You can’t drive an RV with the slide-out extended. The slide-out is for extra living space while parked and should be retracted when driving. If the RV slide motor runs but the slide does not move, it could be because the gears are stripped or there is something blocking the slide from fully retracting.

If your RV slide-out won’t retract, it’s important to find the cause of the problem before driving the RV. If the slide is just stuck, you may be able to use a palm sander or belt sander to help loosen it up. But if the gears are stripped, you’ll need to have them replaced.

How do you reset a camper slide?

If your RV slide motor is running but the slide does not move, there are a few things you can try to reset it. First, check to see if the slide is properly aligned and that there is nothing blocking it from moving.

If everything appears to be in order, then you can try disconnecting and reconnecting the power to the motor. If that doesn’t work, you can try manually moving the slide with a wrench or other tool.

Can you manually push in an RV slide out?

Yes, you can manually push in an RV slide out. If the motor is running but the slide does not move, you may need to check the gears and ensure that they are properly aligned. If they are not, you can try to realign them yourself or take the RV to a mechanic.

Will my slide-out work without a battery?

Yes, the slide-out will work without a battery as long as it is plugged into shore power. The battery is only used as a backup in case of a power outage.

Troubleshooting Your Power Tongue Jack

travel trailer won't move

Most tongue jacks have a light that displays when there’s power to the unit. Ensure the switch is turned to the ON position and check that the light turns on. However, that small light only requires a small amount of power. The electric motor requires more power to operate the tongue jack.

So, if you turn the power tongue jack’s switch to the ON position and the light doesn’t come on, you potentially have two issues. Either the bulb has simply burnt out, or the unit isn’t getting enough power.

It’s easiest to check the status of the latter first. Do so by checking the operation of other 12-volt components, such as your interior lights or power awning. If those components aren’t working, there’s a good chance you have a dead battery.

If they are working, but your power tongue jack won’t extend or retract, it’s possible it’s simply not getting enough power. So you can move on to the next check to determine if a lack of power is your major issue.

Plug into your Tow Vehicle

plug-in-troubleshooting-your-power-tongue-jack-05-2023

Next, you can plug your trailer’s 7-pin connector into your tow vehicle and start its engine. This will pull power from the alternator through the charge feed line to power the tongue jack.

If this works, there are a few issues that could be present:

  • The battery that powers the tongue jack isn’t being charged in transit.
  • The converter isn’t charging the battery.
  • The battery has been discharged so fully that it’s no longer taking charge.

If the power tongue jack works when connected to your tow vehicle but no longer operates once you disconnect, move on to the next check.

Check the Power Tongue Jack’s Fuse or Mini Breaker

mini-breaker-troubleshooting-your-power-tongue-jack-05-2023

Most power tongue jacks have a single power cord running from the head of the unit down and along the trailer frame to a mini breaker or fuse. There’s only a single cord because the unit is grounded through the bolts into the frame.

Follow that power cord down and back until you locate the fuse or mini breaker. If you find a fuse, pull it and check that it isn’t broken. If it is broken, replace the fuse with one of equal amperage.

Trace your power cord back. If you locate a mini breaker, you’ll need a multimeter for testing. With your multimeter in hand, here are your testing steps:

  • Ensure the battery is fully charged or the trailer is connected to a running tow vehicle. A fully charged lead acid battery should read 12.6 volts DC, and a fully charged lithium battery should be around 14.4 volts DC.
  • Set the multimeter to the Volts DC setting.
  • Test by placing the negative lead on a known ground and the positive lead on the BAT side of the breaker to confirm power to the breaker.
  • Test again by keeping the negative lead on a known ground and moving the positive lead to the AUX side of the breaker.
  • Compare the readings to confirm power passes through the breaker with minimal drop. Most tongue jacks should work at voltages above 10.6 volts DC as measured while the jack is running.
  • If testing properly and finding a significant power drop from the BAT side to the AUX side, you may need to replace the breaker.

Technician Tip: The BAT label designates the stud for your power connection. The AUX label designates the stud for connecting the auxiliary device the breaker will protect.

When It’s Time to Take your RV to a Service Center

service-troubleshooting-your-power-tongue-jack-05-2023

If you’ve eliminated issues with your RV’s 12-volt system – battery charge, converter output, breaker output – you may be dealing with an electrical or mechanical issue inside the power tongue jack.

Some common examples include loose internal spade connections, faulty switches, or a failed motor.

Regardless of the exact cause of the problem, it’s time to bring your RV into a service center to have your tongue jack inspected.

Contact a Camping World service center to schedule an appointment.

How to Manually Operate a Power Tongue Jack

manually-retract-troubleshooting-your-power-tongue-jack-05-2023

With your appointment time scheduled, you’ll still face the challenge of retracting your tongue jack to tow it safely. You’ll need your jack’s manual crank handle to accomplish this.

With that crank in hand, here are your next steps:

  • Remove the rubber cover on top of the tongue jack. *Some jacks have the manual crank spur on the side.
  • Insert the crank handle onto the top of the driveshaft and turn counterclockwise to retract the jack leg. Reverse direction if you need to extend the jack for any reason. *Some jacks crank counterclockwise to extend.

If you experience significant resistance or your tongue jack simply won’t move when attempting to operate it manually, you could have a more significant mechanical failure. Examples include a bent ram tube that prevents the jack from sliding into the housing tube or a bad thrust bearing or bevel gear inside the unit itself.

Technician Tip: When experiencing a failure to retract, soil, gravel, or asphalt may have compacted inside the tube if a jack foot was not used. This can be chiseled out with a hammer and a long screwdriver while the unit is elevated on a jack stand. If the jack is difficult to operate in either direction, you may be able to remove the top cover or cap to expose the main shaft. Applying lubricant may restore functionality.

Beyond lubricating to restore functionality, more significant mechanical issues aren’t repairable, and you’ll need to replace your trailer’s power tongue jack.

From your experience, what damage can exposure to rain cause on a power tongue jack? Our trailer is new and we usually cover the jack with a waterproof cover. On a recent trip we got pretty heavy rain for two days and we forgot to put the cover on. When we went to pull out of camp, the power jack would not go up or down and the light doesn’t work. We were able to use the jack manually. What I know is that the 20amp resettable fuse was blown. I replaced it with a new one, turned the trailer battery on, and still the jack doesn’t seem to have any power. When the battery is on, I do hear the resettable fuse clicking, every 10 seconds or so. I turned the battery off so the fuse wouldn’t blow again. Could the rain in that short period of time shorted out the switch or circuit board in the jack? What would cause the fuse to keep trying to reset?

My apologies for the delay. I wanted to reach out to our technical service team to get their insights. Here’s their reply:

“In this case, it sounds as though water intrusion is a definite possibility. While not common, water and moisture intrusion can happen. The fuse or circuit breaker constantly trying to reset could be indicating a short in the system after the over current protection device (fuse / circuit breaker).”

Personally, I’d recommend contacting our service center to schedule an electrical diagnostic for your tongue jack: https://rv.campingworld.com/rv-service-maintenance

Let me know if you have any follow up questions!

I’ve tried it hooked to my truck and unhooked. It doesn’t change. I keep my camper plugged into a 50 amp service at home and it want work right then either.

I’ve got a 2019 coachmen 324rlds freedom express. It has a BAL SS 5.1 Stabilizing system tongue jack. When I flip the switch to extend it will only raise the tongue a few inches. If I wait a little bit and push the button again it goes up a few more inches. I’ve replaced the switch but it didn’t help.

Have you attempted to extend the jack manually? Have you attempted to extend the jack while connected to your tow vehicle? Or only while disconnected?

You can also contact your local CW Service Center to schedule a diagnosis before you attempt to replace any other parts. Here’s where you can find the location nearest you: https://rv.campingworld.com/rv-service-maintenance#js-anchor-locations

A friend raised my jack passed the white tape until it stopped. Now my jack won’t lower by power or by manual. Is it broken or is there a way to lower it?

Sorry for the delay, but I wanted to reach out to our technical service team to get their insight. Here’s their reply:

Hopefully, it has simply been jammed too tightly at the end of the stroke range. In this case, you may be able to break it free with the manual operation handle. After freeing it up, check the inline jack fuse since it may have blow when it got stuck.

Beyond that, you may need to schedule a service appointment to have it inspected: https://rv.campingworld.com/rv-service-maintenance

Let us know if you have any follow up questions!

Sure wish I had a manually operated jack. Only used the jack once when bring trailer to storage after buying it. Jack worked once, and I have to manually lower and raise it.

Hi Brandon,

Replacing your trailer’s power tongue jack with a manual jack is certainly an option!

Here’s our tongue jack inventory: https://www.campingworld.com/hitch-tow/jacks-leveling-chocks/tongue-jacks

And you can also contact our service department about the cost of this kind of service here: https://rv.campingworld.com/rv-service-maintenance

Hope that helps!

My jack rotates the nut on the top clockwise and counter-clockwise but the foot and shaft are free and can be moved with your hand up and down. There is a disconnect between the two. I do not have a power issue. It is a mechanical failure. Is there a nut that attaches the shaft to the gearbox.

There may be a sheared pin between the drive motor and the screw or gear, but tough to tell from the description. I’d recommend contacting a Camping World Service Center to have it inspected by a certified RV technician: https://rv.campingworld.com/rv-service-maintenance

Electric Trailer Jack Not Working: How Do I Fix My Jack?

  • March 25, 2022 /

It can be very embarrassing, and expensive, to go to a technician or mechanic only for them to find a very simple source for your problem. That is what it can be when your electric trailer jack does not work. Always check the simple to fix parts first and save yourself some embarrassing moments.

The good news is that there should be only 3 possible answers to this problem. That is if you have a fully charged battery. Your jack is not getting any power, the motor has gone bad on you or the ground connection is faulty. Use a meter to help you diagnose the issue.

To learn more about this issue, just continue to read our article. It has the information you want to know about so you can find the problem yourself and save yourself some money. Don’t forget a dead battery will cause this problem as well so check it to see if it is fully charged.

Why Won't My Electric Jack Work on My Trailer?

Why-Won't-My-Electric-Jack-Work-on-My-Trailer

The three main issues listed above may have several actual sources to them. For example, not getting any power would mean that the battery is dead, or that a fuse blew, there is a loose connection somewhere or the wires are corroded, and so on.

Also, you may have a bad switch, a short in the wiring and if there is power getting to the motor, then those two parts are not the source. If the motor has gone bad you will have to check it using a jump wire from the negative terminal on your battery to the negative connection on your motor.

If your motor works after connecting it up[ then it is the ground wire that is bad. If the motor does not work, then you need to replace the motor. Also, don’t leave out checking the in-line fuse holder. If the contact is no good, you probably will have to repair or replace the holder.

One owner found that if he raised the jack too high, and had it touch the motor. This created a short and blew the fuse. He solved it by not raising the jack all the way up but left it down a few inches.

Camper Jack Won't Go Up

Camper-Jack-Won't-Go-Up

According to the service manual, if the jack only goes one way, then the problem does not lie with the jack. The source of the trouble will either be the remote or the receiver control box.

This is from the service manual for the Rieco-Titan electric jack system. In one of their models, there are 8 fuses controlling the power supply. If one of those fuses blows, then that could be the source of the problem as well.

If the motor runs when you turn the jack on, then the short is located n the buttons on the remote or the control box. The manual says to send both in for testing if they are the problem.

Also, if there is an unexpected shutdown, you need to check to see if the motor is getting any power. The battery in question would be the one in the remote. It could be defective, low on power or there is a lot of corrosion inside which needs to be cleaned out.

The fix is simple as you either can clean the corrosion, or change or re-charge the batteries.

Trailer Jack Won't Lower

Trailer-Jack-Won't-Lower

The above information is applicable to this situation as well. If the jack goes up or won’t go down, then it is a one-way problem that is not specific to just the downward direction.

The next source for this problem would be the clutch. If you see no movement but hear a clicking sound, then the clutch is slipping. Unfortunately, the clutch cannot be repaired. You would have to go out and find a replacement part and take the old one out.

Another source to check would be the powerhead drive pin. This pin should come out the bottom of the jack and it has to be inside a groove at the top of the jack post. If it isn’t then the drive pin cannot move the screw that turns the jack.

To fix this issue, you need to remove the powerhead and place the pin into the correct slot. Then replace the powerhead. Make sure every part aligns up right before securing the powerhead in place.

Check the service or owner’s manual for your jacks to see what troubleshooting tips they provide. Each model of RV will have different manufacturers and designs and the fixes will be different as well.

How Do I Fix My Electric Jack?

When it comes to the Rieco-Titan electric jack system, the most you can do for most problems is diagnose the source. Then your next step would be to send the remote or controller box to the company for testing and fixing.

That is what their service manual says over and over. In many cases, the only repair you have open to you is to replace the part. This is true for the motor, the fuses, and bad ground connections. it is also the case for the clutch.

Their manual states that the clutch cannot be repaired so you have to get the model or serial number and go to the outlet selling this part to get a new one. If you are not mechanically inclined, it would be best to find a dealer or mechanic who knows how to fix this part.

The good part is, there should be a manual override to the system. Unfortunately, the dealer may give you a complete walk-through and never mention this aspect nor where the crank is hidden.

Their expertise may cost you some money but it may be cheaper than replacing the old jack with a new one. The crank should be there and a good search of the underneath area of your trailer should turn it up.

When you take the jack apart, check for loose nuts. This is one of those simple problems you want to get to first. Just tighten up the loose nuts and you should be good to go.

If you have trouble finding the 30 amp fuse or the fuse older, check the frame behind the batteries or look inside your trailer. It will be somewhere near the front of your trailer.

How do You Unstick a Trailer Jack?

How-do-You-Unstick-a-Trailer-Jack

The first step would be to spray some WD-40 or similar product over the moving parts of the jack. These products will help loosen up those parts and get them moving again. That is if the problem is that simple.

If the jack has been unused for a while, it may have frozen up and will need you to remove it and disassemble the parts. Then apply a lot of grease to those parts to get them working again.

There are several parts that would need the grease. The bearing, the threads, the screw assembly, the washers, and so on. You can use a grease gun to help minimize any mess that comes.

After that is done, you have to reassemble the jack and put it back on the trailer. Watch for stripped nuts and bolts while you do this as those would have to be replaced as well.

How do You Manually Raise an Electric Trailer Jack?

The first step would be to locate the crank for this operation. This is a chore in and of itself as many RV makers place these cranks in different locations that are well hidden. Then the dealers may not tell you where the crank is and you have to spend a lot of time looking for it.

Once you find the crank, remove the plastic cap or rubber plug at the top. Insert the crank and make sure it fits into the over-ride nut. To lower the trailer, turn the crank counter-clockwise. To raise it, go in the clockwise direction.

If you can’t find your crank or lost it somewhere, there are outlets that will sell you a replacement. Unfortunately, manual cranking is not going to be the miracle solution all the time.

If the cranking doesn’t move the jack, then you will have to replace the latter part. There are outlets that will well you a replacement jack .

Some Final Words

Do your best to diagnose the source of the problem first. You may find that it is a simple problem that you can fix, for example, replacing a bad fuse. For most jack repairs, you may not be able to fix the part that has gone bad.

You may need to send them in and have the company fix them for you. Or you may have to buy a replacement part and swap the two.

Weekend Rundown: Here's the biggest news you missed this weekend

'We've come too far': Weinstein's overturned rape conviction won't stop #MeToo movement, advocates say

A day after learning that Harvey Weinstein's 2020 rape conviction was overturned by New York's highest court, one of the women whose testimony w a s at the heart of his trial said she was "sick to my stomach."

But Mimi Haley, a former TV and film production assistant, said Friday that she has no regrets about confronting Weinstein, the once-power Hollywood mogul , in such a public setting, and would "consider" retestifying if prosecutors press for a new trial. She declined to say for certain, adding that the preparation for the first one was daunting.

"While this is a setback, it will not undo the leaps forward we have made," she told reporters, "and it will never undo the truth."

Despite the 4-3 decision Thursday by the New York Court of Appeals to overturn Weinstein's conviction, those who have been firmly fixed in the #MeToo movement — sexual assault survivors and their advocates and legal representatives — say holding those in positions of power accountable will not, and should not, change.

"I think there's been such a seismic shift on how survivors use their voices. I don't think it’s going to shame or shut survivors down into silence," said Elizabeth Fegan, a Chicago lawyer who has represented women who have accused Weinstein of sexual abuse in civil litigation.

#MeToo march

"Will people think twice about participating in a criminal trial? Absolutely," she said of the appeals court's decision. "But will it return us to the era before the #MeToo movement? No way. We've come too far."

Weinstein, 72, was sentenced to 23 years in prison on the New York conviction and remains upstate behind bars. He will not be released after being found guilty in a separate rape case in Los Angeles in 2022. He has filed a notice to appeal that verdict as well.

His conviction in New York of forcibly performing oral sex on Haley in 2006 and of rape in the third degree for an attack on another woman, an aspiring actress, in 2013 had been hailed as a landmark outcome — symbolizing how accusers could band together and call attention to sexual assault and harassment by prominent men and public figures in a multitude of industries.

The appeals court, however, found that the trial judge had erred by allowing additional witnesses to testify even though their allegations were not part of the actual charges against Weinstein. Prosecutors had asked to permit their testimonies in order to show a larger pattern of Weinstein's alleged behavior.

The majority of judges wrote that the supplementary testimony, meant to speak to Weinstein's character, was "highly prejudicial" against him, although they disagreed with his defense's appeal on other issues.

Dawn Dunning , a former actress who testified at Weinstein's trial to give corroborating evidence of alleged sexual assault, said in a statement that she wants the Manhattan district attorney's office to retry the case.

"The culture has changed," Dunning said, "and I am confident that there is no going back."

But Weinstein's lawyer, Arthur Aidala, said the decision was a "victory" for his client and "every criminal defendant in the United States of America."

A spokesperson for the Manhattan district attorney's office said it "will do everything in our power to retry this case, and remain steadfast in our commitment to survivors of sexual assault."

The focus on Weinstein followed Bill Cosby's conviction in 2018 on three felony counts of aggravated indecent assault from a 2004 incident. But in 2021, the comedian's conviction was overturned based on a technicality related to a previous prosecutor's promise not to charge Cosby, and he was freed from a Pennsylvania prison after serving three years of a three- to 10-year sentence.

In both the Cosby and Weinstein cases, survivor advocates have noted that none of the accusers had their credibility called into question as part of the reasons the courts overturned the convictions.

Many in the wider movement pledged to forge ahead and continue speaking out.

"Moments like this underscore why movements are necessary," Tarana Burke, the founder of #MeToo, told reporters. "Almost seven years ago, because these brave women in this case broke their silence, millions and millions and millions of others found the strength to come forward and do the same. That will always be the victory."

Arthur Aidala

Scott Berkowitz, president of the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, or RAINN, which operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline , agreed that no matter what the courts decide, they can't take away from how public sentiment has been on the side of the dozens of women who have accused Weinstein of sexual assault, abuse and rape. But, he said, it's still too early to say if the latest decision will have an impact on reporting rates.

There is typically an uptick in calls to the hotline and visitors to the organization's website following coverage of these high-profile cases, he added.

"It's natural to look at a decision like this and feel deflated," Berkowitz said. "I worry that anything that makes it harder to come forward to attain justice will discourage someone from reporting. But I hope any effect will be brief."

However, that Weinstein isn't able to walk out of prison in the same way that Cosby did may "soften the blow" of his successful appeal, Berkowitz said.

"A lot of the progress we make on this issue is two steps forward and one step back. But in these moments," Berkowitz said, "it can fire up survivors and make them want to stand up to prove that justice can be obtained."

Lawyer Gloria Allred, who represents Haley and other Weinstein accusers, said she is also concerned about what message the appeals court's decision will send to sexual assault survivors, as well as to prosecutors if they don't believe they can win, "especially in high-profile cases against the rich, the famous, the powerful, the well-connected defendants."

"Then there will be not only no access to justice for the #MeToo witnesses, but in addition, for the actual victim of the crime where that crime is within the statute of limitations," Allred told reporters Friday.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 long-term review: Your move, Samsung

The apple watch ultra 2 has the combination of fitness tools and smarts i've been waiting for — and the gorgeous 1.9-inch display doesn't hurt, either..

The app drawer on the Apple Watch Ultra 2

Android Central Verdict

The Apple Watch Ultra 2, without question, is a fantastic and polished smartwatch with no proper equivalents. This isn't to say it's perfect, or that you shouldn't consider other watches if you need better fitness tools or a watch that works for both Android and iOS. But Apple is making real strides toward challenging Garmin in most areas (besides battery life), and third-party apps usually compensate for any missing features.

Diehard Apple fans pay double for the Apple Watch Ultra 2 for its 36-hour battery life and massive display. No doubt most Wear OS fans will scoff, since you can get double the battery life for hundreds less with a Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. However, after months of using the Ultra 2, my biggest hope is that we see more Ultra-style Android watches.

Despite being a lifetime iPhone owner , I never used an Apple Watch before the Ultra 2 because the Series watches lacked the battery and fitness tricks to tempt me. But I pestered the Apple PR team for a six-month loan after seeing watchOS' fitness pivot and how the Ultra 2's dual-frequency GPS gave me confidence it could compete with the best fitness watches .

Google's Fitbit acquisition and Samsung's upcoming pivot to add AI-based "Vitality" data to Samsung Health prove that all mainstream smartwatch brands see fitness as a key foundation. Apple itself hasn't quite hit the Garmin standard I'm looking for. But I suspect future updates will bring it across the finish line, and its third-party workout apps tip the scales for athletes.

As is, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 puts pressure on future flagship watches like the Galaxy Watch 7 Pro or Pixel Watch 3 to do more than their predecessors for serious (or casual) athletes.

Apple Watch Ultra 2: Price and bands

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 retails for a whopping $799, double that of the Series 9. Keep in mind, however, that the 45mm stainless steel Series 9 with cellular costs $749 or more (depending on the band type). The 49mm titanium Ultra 2 with built-in LTE doesn't actually fall far from that premium range.

Courts briefly banned Apple Watch S9 and Ultra 2 sales at the end of 2023 over alleged patent infringement, and Apple's legal woes are ongoing. For now, Apple will continue to sell the Ultra 2 legally by disabling its blood oxygen feature, circumventing a possible ban.

You have three band options: Trail Loop (Green/Gray, Blue/Black, or Orange/Beige), Alpine Loop (Blue, Indigo, or Olive), or Ocean Band (Blue, White, or Orange).

Of the three, the Trail Loop is our recommended "default" option for most people, as the nylon is comfortable and easily adjustable. The Alpine Loop has a titanium G-Hook that keeps it rigidly secure, which is important for adventurer types but less convenient in everyday scenarios. The Ocean Band is specifically for swimmers, with a water-repelling fluoroelastomer instead of water-absorbant nylon.

Apple Watch Ultra 2: Specs

Apple watch ultra 2: what i love.

The Modular Ultra watch face on the Apple Watch Ultra 2

I've already written about my surprise at how much I love the Ultra 2 , thanks to the giant display and reliable battery life. But my appreciation isn't solely because of its size; unlike the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro , it's not just a larger version of the mainline watch. Apple made more purposeful changes to make it feel like a proper flagship.

Look at the specs sheet above: The dual-band GPS, cellular support for emergency calls without a phone, three-mic array and dual speakers, diving certification, military-grade protection against damage, and action button are all exclusive to the Ultra 2 (unless you buy the cellular Apple Watch Series 9 ).

Incomplete activity rings on the Apple Watch Ultra 2

I might never have the chance to use its diving features, but I've certainly bonked this chonky watch against all manner of rough surfaces over the past few months, and both the titanium body and sapphire display have come through unscathed.

I tested calls on a windy mountain hike, and my family could barely tell the difference when I switched to my phone, thanks to the three-mic array. On my end, the dual speakers sound less tinny compared to other Bluetooth-enabled watches I've worn.

A side view of the digital crown and back button on the Apple Watch Ultra 2

The action button, which pulls up the workout menu, is something I instantly took for granted. It's a far better experience than having to look for the workouts app in my drawer. I simply wish it let you program a second shortcut with a double-tap.

While I appreciate all of this, it's just the pleasant seasoning on top of the Ultra 2's meat-and-potatoes upgrade that no other watch offers: 3,000 nits of brightness on a 1.9-inch display.

Widgets on the Apple Watch Ultra 2

As someone with steadily worsening eyesight, I find the Ultra 2's full-sized notifications much easier to read than I'm used to with a watch or smartphone. I can glance at the shared photo or the first few lines of an email without moving my wrist from its typing position, then go right back to work unless it's something relevant.

If it's important, I can swipe up and see a few quick reply options, all visible because of the squircle design. I know Android watch fans love their circular watches for the design, but the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is so much more useable that it's hard to go back to round-edged displays that only have room for one thing at a time. It's why I'm hoping the rumor about a square-shaped Galaxy Watch is true.

A side view of the Apple Watch Ultra 2's action button and speaker holes.

Unlike the Series 9, which is functional but boringly consistent, the Ultra 2 feels distinct with its contoured edges carved into titanium. I won't pretend it isn't massive, but it's pleasingly futuristic looking, with every speaker or mic hole giving the surface standing out for some nice texture. And at 14.4mm thick, it's on par with a flagship Garmin watch .

Since this is my first Apple Watch, I can't claim to know whether the Ultra 2 and Series 9 have 30% faster performance over the last generation — courtesy of the first new CPU since the Series 6 . My colleague "didn't see any noticeable difference" in his Series 9 review, so all I can say is that I've rarely spotted lag across months of sporadic use. Apps open, and Siri responds without delay.

While I'm nowhere close to using up all 64GB of storage, I'd much rather have too much than not enough. I appreciate having the option to save a bunch of audiobooks and music playlists to stream through my AirPods, along with the battery life to play them without risking the watch dying.

A Nike Run Club activity on the Apple Watch Ultra 2

This storage space also provides plenty of room for apps. Long-time Apple Watch owners probably take third-party apps for granted, but I don't. Having access to watchOS apps like WorkOutDoors or Nike Run Club makes up for any deficiencies with Apple's on-device software because you can typically find 3rd-party software to fill the gap.

This strays beyond the confines of this review, but I'll end this section by pointing out that WatchOS seems to have more high-quality apps than Wear OS in key areas — most likely because of Wear OS 3/4's relative newness and Apple's wearable sales dominance. I don't like that Android users get short shrift, but I'll still point it out.

Apple Watch Ultra 2: Fitness accuracy

The Apple Watch Ultra 2, Garmin Forerunner 965, and COROS PACE 3 all worn on one wrist on the Mount Diablo Summit Trail, overlooking the valley below.

If you're spending $799 on a fitness smartwatch, you can expect a certain level of accuracy in your post-run stats. So, how does the Apple Watch 2 Ultra perform compared to a traditional fitness watch like the $599 Garmin Forerunner 965 ?

Across several running and hiking activities, I wore both the Ultra 2 and Forerunner 965 so I could compare their GPS tracking, heart rate data, and running dynamics (aka running form stats). We'll start with this 10K city run below, which had minimal trees or buildings to block the signal; I was surprised to see Apple (orange) beat Garmin (blue):

Garmin usually crushes the competition, but Apple managed to snap to the real-life map better in key areas; in others, Garmin did better, or they both stuck to the trail. Overall, their results were only one-hundredth of a mile apart, whereas a GPS-only watch like the Series 9 wouldn't do nearly as well.

Later, during my smartwatch elevation test wearing multiple watches while climbing a mountain, the Ultra 2 came closest to the official Alltrails data, with just an eight-foot difference in total feet climbed and 24 feet higher than the official max elevation.

That being said, looking at the actual GPS line on the hilly, tree-covered trail, the Ultra 2 did slightly worse than the 965; the mileage was only two-hundredths off across 7.5 miles, but you can see how the orange line drifts slightly more off the trail below:

A map showing how the Garmin Forerunner 965 and Apple Watch Ultra 2's post-run GPX maps compare for GPS accuracy

The most noticeable Apple Watch Ultra 2 difficulty came during a half-marathon trail run, which had dense foliage and clouds. For whatever reason, the Ultra 2 had two moments where it completely lost my positioning — see the straight orange lines on the bottom-right and top-left of the map. I suspect that Apple's map-correcting algorithm isn't as reliable for trail runs as it is for city runs.

Because of this, the Ultra 2 added an extra 0.65 miles to my total, completely skewing the results despite being accurate everywhere else. At one point, it registered me running at 88 miles per hour, which suggests I might be capable of time travel.

A map showing how the Garmin Forerunner 965 and Apple Watch Ultra 2's post-run GPX maps compare for GPS accuracy

Overall, I'm inclined to believe that the Apple Watch Ultra 2 gives me reliable tracking data and that my latest experience during my half-marathon was an aberration. In normal circumstances, it matches Garmin's industry-leading dual-frequency tracking step for step. But if you use it for hiking in tree-rich areas, keep an eye out for moments when it might have sudden gaps in coverage.

For heart rate data, Apple Health's GPX export doesn't include heart rate data, so I can only compare generally against other watches.

Across six tracked workouts wearing the Forerunner 965 and Ultra 2, they shared the exact same average heart rate. Given how well Garmin's Elevate v4 sensor has done compared to chest straps in my testing, this reassures me of Apple's accuracy in general, even if the Apple Fitness HR charts are too vague to dissect properly. I also like that you can customize your heart rate zones.

Next, I looked at each watch's running stats data. In terms of cadence (number of steps per minute), Apple and Garmin were in lockstep, never more than one SPM apart. The same goes for stride length — typically about 1m on both watches.

For more nitpicky stats like vertical oscillation and average ground contact time, Apple slightly underreported my numbers compared to Garmin, but at a consistent gap. I don't know which is more accurate, but you can count on using either as a benchmark to judge your progress.

The only noticeable difference is that Apple consistently reports my running power as about 100W lower than Garmin does, despite sharing the same running form, heart rate, and distance stats. After checking other post-run summaries from COROS and Polar, I'm certain Apple's power calculation is off compared to other brands.

Apple Watch Ultra 2: What you won't love

A side view of the Apple Watch Ultra 2's action button.

Once you pay for an iPhone 15 Pro and Apple Watch Ultra 2, you're looking at close to $2,000. It sort of evens out when you put it against a Galaxy S24 Ultra and Watch 5 Pro because Samsung's flagship phone is so expensive. Either way, it's a lot of money to spend on a smartwatch. You can make the case that the Ultra 2 has the longevity to justify it, but you can just as easily argue that no smartwatch should cost so much.

I wasn't certain if you'd be allowed to spend $799 on the Ultra 2, given Apple's months-long legal woes with Masimo over its alleged blood oxygen patent infringement. As is, it's missing a pretty crucial feature for sleep tracking, one that most fitness watches (or regular smartwatches) have. If that's an issue for you, we have a guide on the best watches for SpO2 tracking .

The bottom sensor array of the Apple Watch Ultra 2

As for the watch itself, you'll have to accept how heavy it is. To be clear, anyone who wears a premium Garmin Fenix or COROS VERTIX might find the Ultra 2 on the light and thin side, especially with the nylon band. I've gotten used to its weight over time, and it sits flatly on my wrist without too much discomfort when I bend it. That said, almost any other watch will feel less noticeable on your wrist.

Plus, of course, Apple's Ultra 2 battery life is only long in the context of everyday smartwatches; its 12 hours of dual-band GPS is solid, and it quickly recharges, but it's far more likely to idle down to a questionable percentage the night before a race if you're not careful. Compared to the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro's 80-hour average, 36 hours is more pedestrian.

Changing the number of stand alerts on the Apple Watch Ultra 2

My bigger issue with the Ultra 2 is what it's missing compared to other fitness brands. Because I'm not much of an indoor workout person, Apple Fitness Plus doesn't appeal to me. Apple automatically tracks certain outdoor activities, and watchOS 9 and 10 have prioritized running, hiking, and cycling, but it hasn't fully caught up to dedicated fitness brands.

Apple has yet to announce an equivalent to a daily readiness score based on your sleep and activity data or a daily recommended run based on your VO2 Max and recent workouts. It doesn't track the training load or effect of a workout, nor does it tell you how long to wait until your next run. It just expects you to close your rings every day.

And on that note, the Ultra 2's activity rings aren't always accurate when it comes to move reminders , telling me I've stood up or burned calories during hours at my desk, presumably due to my nervous fidgeting. That being said, I still love Apple's ring-closing concept enough that I don't mind the occasional glitch. It's still motivational, and that matters to me more than perfect accuracy.

I hope that watchOS prioritizes post-workout data while adding new watch face complications to show this data on the massive Ultra 2 display. Heck, I'd even take something as simple as showing your step count on the watch display without having to look in the Activity app.

Apple Watch Ultra 2: Competition

The Samsung Galaxy Watch Pro (left) and Apple Watch Ultra (right) side-by-side.

If we're strictly looking at smartwatches with long battery life and app support, the 80-hour Galaxy Watch 5 Pro would be my first recommendation. It also uses a titanium, military-grade design with similar sapphire glass but without the diving capabilities. It consistently lasts much longer, though the 1.4-inch display isn't as spacious or bright. Plus, of course, it doesn't work for iOS users.

The Garmin Epix Pro (Gen 2), with its titanium frame, bright AMOLED display, and fitness focus, is another alternative with one major downside: the lack of apps and phone-watch synchronicity. If you can accept that, you'll get the same dual-frequency GPS, robust mapping tools, and similar health data as the Ultra 2. It arguably wins for fitness with suggested workouts, calculated hill and endurance scores, and a built-in LED flashlight. It lasts significantly longer at 31 days or 38 dual-band GPS hours. It's quite expensive, so you may want to look at other Garmin watch options.

Lastly, of course, you have the Apple Watch Series 9 , which has the same watchOS software without the doubled battery life, rugged design, and larger, brighter display. Despite this, you can still use the Series 9 for basic fitness activities; you'll just need to charge it afterward.

Compared to the best Android watches , the Pixel Watch 2 has the upside of its Fitbit Premium recs and reliable heart rate data for a much lower price, but that tiny display takes getting used to after becoming accustomed to the Ultra 2.

As for Samsung, my Galaxy Watch 6 fitness test underwhelmed me with its wonky GPS results and lack of proper workout guidance. I'm still holding out hope that the Watch 7 Pro will provide a more Ultra 2-like experience with a bigger fitness focus, along with better sleep data via the Galaxy Ring.

Apple Watch Ultra 2: Should you buy?

The app drawer on the Apple Watch Ultra 2

You should buy the Apple Watch Ultra 2 if...

  • You want an Apple smartwatch that you don't have to charge every day.
  • You want a baseline of fitness accuracy for workouts in a traditional smartwatch.
  • You prefer having a variety of third-party workout app options.
  • You want a standalone watch that'll keep working if your phone dies.

You shouldn't buy the Apple Watch Ultra 2 if...

  • You don't want to spend a huge amount of money.
  • You want training load or workout recs baked into the watch's main software.
  • You don't want to be locked into the Apple ecosystem.

As my first Apple Watch experience, the Ultra 2 made a strong impression. I haven't spent years getting used to (or sick of) the software, so it feels like a strong, polished experience straight away.

I didn't have space to discuss every feature I liked, such as the Smart Stack widgets and hiking waypoints, but rest assured that you can spend months using this watch and still learn new features or discover new apps.

I spent many days wearing my Apple and Garmin watches simultaneously, and not just because of the running tests. I like Apple's polish and responsive notifications, but I don't want to give up Garmin because its fitness algorithm has truly helped me get more fit, even if its smarts aren't up to par. If Apple can advance any further in its fitness journey, the Ultra 2 will become even more compelling.

As I said above, that puts pressure on the Galaxy Watch 7 Pro — or the rumored Galaxy Watch Ultra — to be more than a battery powerhouse. It needs to be a fitness powerhouse, too. The Watch 5 Pro started this with offline GPX mapping, but it needs to go much further this summer.

Your move, Samsung! Don't let Apple own this category.

Render of the Apple Watch Ultra 2

Worth getting jealous over

I can only hope that Samsung or Google start selling Ultra-style (or squircle) smartwatches of their own, because right now, Apple has the market cornered on long-lasting smartwatches with massive displays that don't feel like a compromise to use. It has fast performance, reliable workout results, and a surprisingly comfortable fit for its size.

Campaign Updates Biden jokes about his age and Trump at White House Correspondents’ dinner.

President Biden will attend the White House Correspondents Association Dinner on Saturday night.

Reid J. Epstein

Along with their jokes, President Biden and Colin Jost delivered the usual odes to a free press and democracy. Biden all but asked the press to take his side in covering this year’s election. Neither man offered jokes on the thorniest subject gripping the White House: Israel’s war in Gaza, which drew throngs of protesters outside the hotel that hosted the event.

Colin Jost, of “Saturday Night Live,” spoke for 23 minutes at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner tonight and told a lot of jokes that justifiably did not get a lot of laughs from the room at the Washington Hilton.

Biden spoke for roughly 10 minutes — a pretty short speech by his standards.

President Biden is making a full-throated pitch for the press to see the 2024 election the way that he does and “ignore the horse race.” Translation: He would like more attention paid to former President Donald J. Trump and his perceived threats, and less to Biden’s personal and campaign shortcomings.

“I give you my word as a Biden — we’re not going to give up until we get them home. All of them,” Biden says of journalists wrongfully detained overseas.

Though he had a couple of gentle jabs about his age, the jokes portion of Biden’s speech was focused not on himself, as has long been the custom at the correspondents’ dinner, but mostly on others. He cracked about Donald Trump, Lorne Michaels and Colin Jost.

Biden delivers some edgy jokes early on. “If Congress we’re theater, they would have thrown out Lauren Boebert awhile ago,” he says. The Republican representative from Colorado was thrown out of a theater last year.

“Age is the only thing we have in common. My vice president actually endorses me,” Biden says, referring to Vice President Mike Pence’s decision not to endorse Mr. Trump.

Biden, who has forbidden his aides from engaging on Trump’s trials, makes a joke about Trump’s trial, saying he is facing “stormy weather,” an allusion to Stormy Daniels, the porn star at the center of the former president’s current criminal trial.

Biden does not waste time launching into jokes about his age or Donald Trump. “I’m a grown man running against a 6-year-old,” Biden says. “Well, I feel great. I really feel great.”

Kelly O’Donnell, a senior White House correspondent for NBC News, used her remarks at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner to call attention to journalists who have been captured or killed while doing their jobs — including Evan Gershkovich, who has been detained in Russia, Austin Tice, who was kidnapped while reporting in Syria, and reporters who have been killed in Gaza.

At the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington tonight, the actress Molly Ringwald is seated next to John Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council. Lester Holt, the NBC News anchor, has a seat next to Jeff Zients, the White House chief of staff. Mr. Zients stood up briefly to talk to the Rev. Al Sharpton before resuming his chat with Mr. Holt.

Protesters wearing press vests with the names of more than 100 Palestinian journalists who have been killed in Gaza during the war lay down on Connecticut Avenue in front of the dinner venue. “By putting our human bodies on the street, we create a little discomfort” for the journalists attending the event, said Hazami Barmada, an organizer of the protest.

Hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters have gathered in front of the Washington Hilton, where tonight’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner is taking place. They are accusing journalists of being complicit in the deaths of more than 33,000 Palestinians in Gaza.

Senator John Fetterman, Democrat of Pennsylvania, showed up at the Politico-CBS dinner pre-party tonight wearing a white, hooded sweatshirt emblazoned with a bow-tie design on its front.

Politicians and journalists arriving at the Washington Hilton for tonight’s annual White House Correspondents’ Association are walking past hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters chanting, “Shame on you!” Some are holding up press vests, shouting about the number of journalists killed while reporting in Gaza. President Biden is set to speak at the dinner, which will be hosted by the “Saturday Night Live” star Colin Jost.

Donald Trump unleashed a broadside on Friday evening against Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the independent presidential candidate who in recent polls appears to be taking support from Trump. After months of first praising Kennedy and then insisting that his candidacy would hurt Biden more, Trump has now accused Kennedy of being “a Democrat ‘Plant’” designed to help Biden win the election.

Biden lets the Trump jokes fly at annual roast: ‘I’m a grown man running against a 6-year-old.’

Biden pokes fun at trump during annual roast, president biden joked about former president donald j. trump’s age — and his own — among other topics at the white house correspondents’ association dinner. outside the event, outrage over mr. biden’s support for israel in the war in gaza was evident..

“The 2024 election is in full swing. And yes, age is an issue. I’m a grown man running against a 6-year-old. Age is the only thing we have in common. My vice president actually endorses me. [laughter] I had a great stretch since the State of the Union, but Donald has had a few tough days lately. You might call it stormy weather.” “I hope that tonight will be a night to remember, for most of us. And I would like to point out — it’s after 10 p.m., sleepy Joe is still awake. My Weekend Update co-anchor, Michael Che was going to join me here tonight. But in solidarity with President Biden, I decided to lose all my black support. Che told me to say that, and I’m just realizing I was set up.” “Shame, shame, shame on you.” “Shame on you!” “Shame, shame, shame, shame.”

President Biden didn’t waste time.

Just minutes into his speech at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday, Mr. Biden launched into the issues dominating the 2024 election, including his age and former President Donald J. Trump’s hush-money trial in New York.

“The 2024 election’s in full swing and yes, age is an issue,” Mr. Biden said in a roughly 10-minute speech. “I’m a grown man running against a 6-year-old.”

“Donald has had a few tough days lately. You might call it ‘stormy’ weather,” Mr. Biden said, an oblique reference to Stormy Daniels, a porn actress who claims to have had sex with Mr. Trump in 2006 and received a hush-money payment in the days before the 2016 election, a deal at the center of his New York trial.

The comments, even as part of a roast, were notable given Mr. Biden has forbidden his aides to talk publicly about Mr. Trump’s legal troubles. But they also came as Mr. Biden has ramped up his attacks on Mr. Trump, sharpening the split-screen between a president on the campaign trail and a former president spending his days in a courtroom.

The annual dinner at the Washington Hilton Hotel provided a break to journalists and government officials from their normal jousting for a night of glitz and gossip in celebration of the free press. Mr. Biden, who has held fewer news conferences than his predecessors, extended his roast to the journalists gathered for the dinner.

“Some of you complained that I don’t take enough of your questions,” Mr. Biden said. “No comment.”

“The New York Times issued a statement blasting me for ‘actively and effectively avoiding independent journalists,’” Mr. Biden said. “Hey, if that’s what it takes to get The New York Times to say I’m active and effective, I’m for it.”

Outside the gates of the Washington Hilton, however, outrage over Mr. Biden’s support for Israel’s war in Gaza was evident.

As journalists and politicians arrived at the hotel, many were swarmed by pro-Palestinian protesters chanting, “Shame on you!” Other protesters wearing press vests with the names of more than 100 Palestinian journalists who have been killed in Gaza lay down in front of the dinner venue.

“By putting our human bodies on the street, we create a little discomfort” for the journalists attending the event, said Hazami Barmada, an organizer of the protest.

Inside the hotel ballroom, many journalists wore pins reading “Free Evan” to raise awareness of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who has been detained in Russia since March 2023 — wrongfully, according to the U.S. government.

Biden Vows to Bring Home Detained U.S. Journalists

President biden took a more somber tone to acknowledge journalists who were wrongfully detained overseas. “we’re not going to give up until we get them home,” he said..

“There are some who call you the enemy of the people. That’s wrong and it’s dangerous. You literally risk your lives doing your job. And some of your colleagues have given their lives, and many have suffered grievous injuries. Other reporters have lost their freedom. Journalism is clearly not a crime, not here, not there, not anywhere in the world. We’re doing everything we can to bring home journalists, fellow journalists, Austin and all Americans, like Paul Whelan. You know, who wrongfully detained all around the world. And I give you my word as a Biden, we’re not going to give up until we get them home. All of them. All of them.” “At The Wall Street Journal, they are counting, for Moscow correspondent Evan Gershkovich, 396 days since he was jailed in Russia. The U.S. government has designated Evan as wrongfully detained. And Evan’s parents and his family are with us tonight. And we are with you, always. We remember Austin Tice, 4,276 days, nearly 12 years since he was kidnapped in Syria. His mother, Deborah, is with us, and Mrs. Tice, we are with you. And Mr. President, again, we humbly ask that you do everything you can to bring them home.

Kelly O’Donnell, a senior White House reporter for NBC News who is also president of the correspondents’ association, used her remarks to call attention to journalists who have been captured or killed while doing their jobs, including Mr. Gershkovich; Austin Tice, who was kidnapped while reporting in Syria; and reporters who have been killed in Gaza.

“Our profession can be perilous,” Ms. O’Donnell said. “Since October, about 100 journalists have been killed, most of those deaths in Gaza.”

Ms. O’Donnell also said the association had wanted to choose both a writer and a comedian when it came to their host this year. Colin Jost, the co-anchor of “Weekend Update” on “Saturday Night Live” — and a former reporter for the Staten Island Advance — spent roughly 23 minutes poking fun at the president.

But Mr. Jost’s speech was relatively light, even supportive of Mr. Biden. He ended it by noting that his grandfather, who recently died, had voted for Mr. Biden in the last election.

“The reason he voted for you is because you’re a decent man,” Mr. Jost said.

Still, Mr. Jost didn’t miss an opportunity to needle the president over his poll numbers.

“My ‘Weekend Update’ co-anchor, Michael Che, was going to join me here tonight — but in solidarity with President Biden I decided to lose all my Black support,” Mr. Jost said, referring to polling that has shown Mr. Biden struggling with Black voters.

Over seared petit filet mignon, celebrities and journalists also had a chance to catch those setting policy that will impact Americans for years to come. Lester Holt, the anchor of NBC News, sat next to Jeffrey D. Zients, the White House chief of staff, who made sure to stand up and speak briefly with the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Not everyone was in a tuxedo or dress — Senator John Fetterman, Democrat of Pennsylvania, showed up wearing a white, hooded sweatshirt emblazoned with a bow-tie design on its front.

Hollywood was well represented at the dinner, with the actress Scarlett Johansson, who is married to Mr. Jost, sitting up front. Popular cable news anchors dined with the actors Jon Hamm and Sean Penn, among others.

Before making their way to their seats, politicians like Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic leader, and Gov. J.B. Pritzker of Illinois held court with guests as Biden campaign officials talked about recent polls showing Mr. Biden cutting into Mr. Trump’s lead.

Mr. Biden, too, sounded emboldened. While he rarely mentioned Mr. Trump by name early in his presidency, he has aggressively taunted him as of late and kept it going on Saturday.

“Did you hear what Donald said about the major Civil War battle?” Mr. Biden said. “Gettysburg. Wow. Trump’s speech was so embarrassing, the statue of Robert E. Lee surrendered again.”

“Age is the only thing we have in common,” Mr. Biden, 81, said of Mr. Trump, 77. “My vice president actually endorses me,” Mr. Biden said, referring to former Vice President Mike Pence’s decision not to endorse Mr. Trump.

Mr. Biden also used his speech at the dinner to warn about his political opponent’s threats on democracy — increasingly a focus of his message to voters.

“Focus on what’s actually at stake,” Mr. Biden said. “The stakes couldn’t be higher.”

Trump turns on R.F.K. Jr. amid concerns he could attract Republican voters.

Former President Donald J. Trump is sharpening his attacks on the independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., as new polls show an overlap between their core supporters.

In a series of posts on his Truth Social media platform on Friday night, Mr. Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, took aim at both Mr. Kennedy and his running mate, Nicole Shanahan , a wealthy Silicon Valley lawyer and investor.

“RFK Jr. is a Democrat ‘Plant,’ a Radical Left Liberal who’s been put in place in order to help Crooked Joe Biden, the Worst President in the History of the United States, get Re-Elected,” Mr. Trump wrote.

Mr. Trump, who had privately discussed the idea of Mr. Kennedy as a running mate , echoed what Democrats have been saying for months about Mr. Kennedy’s candidacy — that it could swing the election. He also appeared to be adopting a new derisive nickname for him.

“A Vote for Junior’ would essentially be a WASTED PROTEST VOTE, that could swing either way, but would only swing against the Democrats if Republicans knew the true story about him,” he said.

Mr. Kennedy fired back on Saturday in his own social media post.

“When frightened men take to social media they risk descending into vitriol, which makes them sound unhinged,” he wrote on X . “President Trump’s rant against me is a barely coherent barrage of wild and inaccurate claims that should best be resolved in the American tradition of presidential debate.”

Mr. Kennedy further attempted to goad the former president.

“Instead of lobbing poisonous bombs from the safety of his bunker, let’s hear President Trump defend his record to me mano-a-mano by respectful, congenial debate,” he wrote.

Mr. Trump also took a swipe at Mr. Kennedy’s running mate, Ms. Shanahan, who gave $2 million out of the $5.4 million that Mr. Kennedy raised in March. Until last year, she was married to the Google co-founder Sergey Brin.

Mr. Trump referred to her as the “V.P. Candidate that nobody ever heard of” and denigrated her business credentials.

“Her business was doing surgery on her husband’s wallet!” Mr. Trump wrote in a post. “She’s more Liberal than Junior’ by far, not a serious person, and only a Pot of Cash to help get her No Chance Candidate on the Ballot … ”

Mr. Trump’s barbs signaled a potential change in strategy by the former president, who Democratic allies of President Biden and political observers have for months suggested could benefit from having Mr. Kennedy, the liberal scion, in the race.

But several recent polls have undercut such a scenario, including a survey released on Wednesday by Quinnipiac University that showed that Mr. Kennedy’s supporters were more likely to favor Mr. Trump in a two-way race. Forty-seven percent would vote for Mr. Trump, and 29 percent would vote for Mr. Biden.

In a hypothetical five-way race that included third-party and other independent candidates, Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden were deadlocked at 37 percent, with Mr. Kennedy receiving support from 16 percent of registered voters.

Two other recent polls — by Marist College and NBC News — showed that Mr. Biden performed better in multicandidate races featuring Mr. Kennedy.

Filmmakers accuse Gavin Newsom’s PAC of plagiarism in abortion-access ad.

The plots of the movie and the political ad appear to mirror each other: Two women drive anxiously toward the state line, and during a traffic stop, the police demand a pregnancy test.

Two independent filmmakers say that is more than just a coincidence, and have accused the Campaign for Democracy , a PAC created by Gov. Gavin Newsom, Democrat of California, of plagiarizing their 2023 short film, “ Roed ,” in its new ad about abortion access .

The film’s producers, Dawn Lambing and Tara Bissett, sent a letter to Mr. Newsom on Thursday that was obtained by The New York Times, requesting to be credited in the group’s ad, which is called “ Fugitive ” and debuted on Monday in Alabama.

Writing that while they were “on the same side” as the governor in opposing “draconian” restrictions on abortion, “on a shot-by-shot basis virtually the entire ad is a direct recreation of our work.”

“We are dismayed to see our work essentially copied without any recognition or attribution to us, much less our permission having first been sought and obtained,” the filmmakers wrote.

Lindsey Cobia, a spokeswoman for the Campaign for Democracy, said in a statement on Saturday that the parallels between the ad and the film were unintentional.

“We were not aware of the film, but we applaud it,” Ms. Cobia said. “Our spot was independently derived based on a common trope.”

There are some differences between the PAC’s ad, which is 30 seconds long, and the film, which runs just under 10 minutes. The ad takes place in Alabama, and the woman driving is the one seeking abortion services. She is forced to take a pregnancy test, and the ad ends with her arrest by a patrolman, who places her in handcuffs.

In the film, both the driver and her passenger are required to take pregnancy tests on the side of the road in an unspecified state by two police officers, one of whom draws a gun. The officers let them go after the tests come back negative. What they don’t see is another woman hidden in the car’s trunk — the one seeking an abortion.

The ad is running for two weeks on broadcast and cable television, as well as online, in Alabama, where Republicans have called for prosecuting women who travel elsewhere for an abortion. The state’s abortion ban, one of the nation’s strictest, outlaws the procedure at all stages of pregnancy, with no exceptions for rape or incest.

“Roed” won the award for best short film at last year’s ACTRA Montreal Short Film Festival and will be shown later this spring at the Brooklyn Film Festival.

“As independent filmmakers, reputation is everything, and the unmistakable similarities between the ad and our work threaten the perceived authenticity and integrity of our original idea, concept and execution,” they wrote.

Mr. Newsom has emerged as a key surrogate for President Biden while harboring White House ambitions of his own. He has regularly skirmished with Republican governors , Republican-led states and conservative news media over abortion access, immigration, crime and other issues.

Alabama’s attorney general, Steve Marshall, a Republican, has clashed with the Justice Department and abortion assistance providers over whether the state has the authority to prosecute individuals or groups that help women leave the state to have the procedure.

Last month, Republicans introduced a bill in the Alabama House of Representatives that would make it a misdemeanor to harbor or transport a minor to seek abortion services.

In February, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos were people with rights, casting a cloud of uncertainty over in vitro fertilization. The state later passed a law giving I.V.F. clinics criminal and civil immunity, but it did not address whether embryos have the legal status of human beings.

Republican Party asks the Secret Service to move protesters away from its convention venue.

The Republican Party sent a letter to the Secret Service on Friday urging the police agency to keep protesters farther away from the venue for the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee in July.

The three-page letter, signed by Todd R. Steggerda, counsel to the Republican National Committee, objected to the placement of an area where protesters would be allowed to demonstrate. Mr. Steggerda argued that convention attendees would be forced to pass by the protesters on their way into the venue, raising the potential for confrontations.

“As recent college and university campus clashes make plain,” Mr. Steggerda wrote in the letter obtained by The New York Times, “forced proximity heightens tensions among peaceful attendees and demonstrators of differing ideologies and increases the risk of escalation to verbal, or even physical, clashes.”

Hundreds of people have been arrested in a recent wave of pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses , but there have been no reports of significant violence by those demonstrators.

Under the security plan proposed by the Secret Service, according to the letter, protesters will be confined to Pere Marquette Park , a small public park on the bank of the Milwaukee River about a quarter of a mile from Fiserv Forum — the arena that is home to the Milwaukee Bucks of the N.B.A. and that is hosting the convention. The letter adds that the two main routes to the arena designated by the Secret Service are adjacent to the park, which would force those heading to the convention to pass by it.

“Packing demonstrators into a park essentially boxed in by the two streets that thousands of attendees will be using to enter the convention site will only serve to heighten — rather than prevent and diffuse — any tension,” Mr. Steggerda wrote.

Alexi Worley, a spokeswoman for the Secret Service, said in a statement that the agency “is not formally in receipt” of the letter, adding, “If a letter is received, the Secret Service will respond through appropriate channels.” The copy of the letter obtained by The Times was addressed to Kimberly A. Cheatle, the director of the Secret Service, “via hand delivery.”

Ms. Worley added that security plans for events like the Republican National Convention are “developed and approved through an executive steering committee made up of representatives from the Secret Service, as well as supporting federal, state and local agencies.”

The R.N.C. did not propose an alternative location for the demonstration zone in the letter, instead suggesting that the Secret Service expand the security perimeter to move protesters away from the area.

Peter Meijer, who voted to impeach Trump, has withdrawn from the Republican Senate primary in Michigan.

Peter Meijer, a Republican who voted to impeach former President Donald J. Trump when he was a member of the House, announced on Friday that he was dropping out of the Republican primary race for U.S. Senate in Michigan.

“The hard reality is the fundamentals of the race have changed significantly since we launched this campaign,” Mr. Meijer said in a post on Facebook , adding that he did not have a “strong pathway to victory.”

He was facing a crowded primary field featuring another high-profile Republican: Mike Rogers , who served seven terms in the House and rose to become the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

The Secretary of State’s office confirmed Mr. Meijer’s withdrawal from the race and said he would not be on the ballot on Aug. 6.

The move comes five days before Mr. Trump, who endorsed Mr. Rogers for the seat, returns to the battleground state for a rally in Freeland, Mich. Mr. Rogers is expected to attend the rally, his campaign said.

“Continuing this campaign only increases the likelihood of a divisive primary that would distract from the essential goal — conservative victories in November,” said Mr. Meijer, who did not immediately respond to requests for further comment on Friday.

The seat is being vacated by Senator Debbie Stabenow, the state’s senior senator and a Democrat, who announced last year that she would not seek a fifth term . That teed up a crowded field of Republicans vying to flip the seat in a general election contest that could decide control of the narrowly divided Senate. The Republican nominee is likely to face Representative Elissa Slotkin, the most prominent Democrat seeking to succeed Ms. Stabenow.

Mr. Meijer’s departure does not void the primary of Trump critics, however.

Justin Amash, who was the only sitting Republican member of Congress to support Mr. Trump’s first impeachment, remains in the race. He left the party in 2019 while facing attacks from Mr. Trump and did not run for re-election in 2020. But he is running as a Republican again now.

Mr. Trump’s upcoming visit to Michigan — planned for one of the few days next week when he will not be attending his criminal trial in Manhattan — is his latest foray to the same battleground state where an investigator disclosed this week that the former president was an unindicted co-conspirator in a plot by his allies to assemble a slate of fake electors during the 2020 election.

Mr. Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, lost the state to Joseph R. Biden Jr. in 2020, a major blow to his re-election bid in the Midwest bellwether that had helped propel him to the White House in 2016. Several of his allies are facing criminal charges in the fake electors scheme.

In Michigan, the former president’s grip on the G.O.P. remains strong: He swept the Republican delegates at the state party’s convention in March, just days after dominating its primary under the party’s hybrid nominating system.

Mr. Meijer, the scion of the Meijer supermarket empire and an Army Reserve veteran who served in Iraq, was ousted from his House seat during the 2022 midterm elections by a far-right challenger endorsed by Mr. Trump, after serving just one term. A Democrat, Hillary Scholten, then flipped the seat in the general election that year.

Pete Hoekstra, the chairman of the Michigan Republican Party and a former longtime House member himself, said in an interview on Friday that there had been rumblings about Mr. Meijer’s exit from the race.

“Peter’s a young guy, got a good résumé, and I think has aspirations in the future and just kind of decided that this was not the year to go to the wall,” Mr. Hoekstra said.

A seemingly looser Biden takes his act to the White House Correspondents’ dinner.

Joseph R. Biden Jr. unrestrained?

In the weeks since his rowdy State of the Union speech , riding a modest bump in the polls , President Biden has shown a looser, more comfortable version of himself — cranking out memorable wisecracks, heartfelt moments and cringe-worthy gaffes in equal measure.

He has needled his Republican rival , former President Donald J. Trump, with increasing frequency, presented his softer side on talk radio and repeatedly spun tall tales about driving an 18-wheeler truck , being arrested at a civil rights rally and having an uncle who might have been eaten by cannibals . In one memorable episode this week, Mr. Biden read aloud his teleprompter instructions, asking a crowd to imagine what he could do with “four more years … pause.”

The annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday night could be another opportunity for Mr. Biden to be in the moment, in what might be the perfect setting for him to continue roasting Mr. Trump, his once and future presidential rival.

It will be the last such dinner before the 2024 election, giving the president and members of the press a brief respite from the campaign trail as they participate in a Washington ritual designed to celebrate a free press.

That doesn’t mean that there won’t be politics. Mr. Biden will almost assuredly make jokes at Mr. Trump’s expense and poke fun at the Washington press corps. Like seemingly every president before him, he has been irritated by unfavorable coverage of his administration, and has made no secret of that at previous dinners.

But Mr. Biden could also take a victory lap for a spate of good news in recent days. On Wednesday, the president earned yet another crucial union endorsement, this one from North America’s Building Trades Unions, in large part for his signature bipartisan infrastructure package . That same day, he signed another consequential piece of legislation — a $95.3 billion package of aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan that came after months of false starts and brutal congressional infighting.

On Thursday, Mr. Biden promoted a $6.1 billion grant to a chip manufacturer that he said would bolster the nation’s supply of semiconductors, contributing to what he has labeled “the great American comeback story.”

And on Friday, Mr. Biden made a surprise visit to “The Howard Stern Show,” hosted by America’s best-known shock jock. The president spoke at length about deeply personal events, showing an emotionally vulnerable side to Mr. Stern’s large audience of middle-class Americans. And, in a notable shift, he said he would debate Mr. Trump.

The former president, in contrast, has had a bruising two weeks, kept from campaigning in key battleground states by his felony criminal trial in New York. Though the trial is adjourned until Tuesday, Mr. Trump has appeared exhausted by the proceedings, complaining in brief daily remarks to the press that he has to sit in court “day after day after day.”
