DON GEORGE - Conference Chair //  BOB HOLMES - Photography Chair

"Every summer some magic happens at Book Passage. For four days in August, some of the best travel writers, editors, photographers, publishers, and agents in the world convene in Corte Madera to share the art and heart of the work they love at the Book Passage Travel Writers & Photographers Conference."

Don George, Conference Co-Founder and Chair

The Book Passage Travel Writers & Photographers Conference has an extraordinary reputation among publishers, editors, and writers. Alumni have published books, articles, and photos—many as the direct result of lessons learned and contacts made at the conference.

This 4-Day Conference is now in its 31st year.   There is no finer travel conference anywhere in the world.

The Conference offers an array of workshops, panels, and evening activities. There are many hours of informal interaction between faculty and participants during lunch and in discussions that often last late into the evening.

The collegial atmosphere of this conference is legendary. It attracts participants and faculty from all over the country, many for repeat visits. Opportunities abound for faculty and participants to talk, laugh, and exchange ideas in classes, workshops, panels, and informal meals.

Conference Praise

"I owe a huge karmic debt to Book Passage! Without Book Passage, I'd be sitting in my house twiddling my thumbs instead of preparing to introduce my fifth book!" – Paola Gianturco

"Coming to the Conference for the first time this year [2005] I was struck not just by the talent and passion (which are the norm at writing workshops) but by the friendliness and lack of pretentiousness (which aren't). Everyone — students as well as faculty — seemed well-read, well-travelled, curious, engaged, open. If good Americans go to Paris when they die, good American travel writers go to Corte Madera." – Thomas Swick, Travel Editor, South Florida Sun-Sentinel

"Last night was about more than books to me. It was a about life, inspiration, a dream that began in 2006, when I attended my first event (the Travel Writers' and Photographers' Conference) at Book Passage, met Linda, and hoped, one day, that I would be able to write a book of my own. Thank you for the opportunity to celebrate this dream-come-true. You have given a great gift to me and my family during a very special time in our lives — something we will always remember." – Elaine Bond

Which Travel Writing Conference Is Right for Me?

Travel writers spend a lot of the time on the road. We are notorious for not having an office, and our colleagues (and bosses) are often people we correspond with primarily via the Internet. However, once in a while, it is advantageous for an aspiring travel writer to attend a networking event, also known as a travel writing conference.

Vagabondish is reader-supported. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn a small affiliate commission. Read our disclosure .

Whether you’re new to the travel writing game or an old pal looking to meet some of your old co-workers (and friends), going to a conference is essential to the job.

Here are several conferences that take place at least once a year:

TBEX stands for “Travel Bloggers EXchange” – a community that allows travel writers, bloggers, editors as well as (mere) travelers to interact online at TravelBlogExchange.com . Then, there is the annual event, which started out as one conference per year in North America, and now has expanded to include a conference in Europe as well.

This year, the North American conference was held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, from June 11-12, with more than 450 attendees! If you missed this year’s conference, another option is to attend TBEX Europe in Prague from Nov. 4-5, 2011.

Is TBEX right for me?

As the name states, TBEX is for bloggers. If you specialize in magazine writing, there might be other events better suited for your needs. If you are seeking to learn about social media and monetizing your blog, as well as using video to enhance or promote your travel writing, this might be the right event for you. Conference organizer, Kim Mance, is a prime example with her Galavanting TV and should not be missed as one of the key speakers.

Travel Classics

Again, the name tells all. Travel Classics is for those who prefer more of a classic route. That is, it will include magazines; meaning paper not only online writing.

Note that Travel Classics does not just accept anyone. It caters to experienced writers, and you must apply to secure your spot. What does this mean? Sending in several clips and writing samples. Just to make sure you are not heading along for the free press tours. Yes, you heard correctly: each conference includes a free pre- and post press tour, usually sponsored by the tourism board of the host country.

This year, Travel Classics was in Dublin from June 23-26, 2011. There will be another event in Vancouver from October 6-9, 2011 (it seems that Vancouver is getting popular with travel writers this year). Both events admit only a maximum of forty writers, along with about fifteen editors. Given the small size, writers can schedule one-on-one workshops with the editors.

Is Travel Classics right for me?

Well, before you start wondering whether it is right for you, you have to jump the hurdle of applying. If your application is accepted (meaning that you are an experienced travel writer), you can decide whether you want to go. If you are seeking to break in to National Geographic, it might be a good idea to head to Dublin; Keith Bellows, Editor in Chief, will be among the editors present.

Jumbled Type

Book Passage Travel, Food and Photography Conference

Don George, Global Travel Editor for Lonely Planet Publications, is the one who started the Book Passage travel writing conference 20 years ago. Held annually in San Francisco, the conference brings together both inexperienced and experienced writers. In fact, Don George often mentions that some of the faculty started out as former students way back in the day.

One favorite story of his is that one student started talking to an editor over lunch about his travels and before the conference had ended, signed a book contract about precisely those journeys.

While it is perhaps unlikely that you, too, will experience such luck, it is worth a shot. This year, the conference will be held in San Francisco from August 11-14, 2011. Speakers and editors include Tim Cahill, David Farley as well as Don George himself.

Is Book Passage right for me?

Especially if you are new to travel writing, this is a good place to start. Book Passage welcomes writers with a variety of experience levels and you can get your foot in the door here. To do so, consider signing up for one of the individual editing sessions beforehand. They cost extra, but those few minutes with David Farley or Tim Cahill might be well worth the money.

Travel Bloggers Unite

Like TBEX, TBU provides an online community where travel writers can network and exchange ideas.

They also run several conferences. The first was held in Manchester earlier this March, and the second will be in Innsbruck, Austria, from August 24-26, 2011.

For the Innsbruck event, you can view the delegate list of those already registered here. Speakers include Sebastian Heinzel (Tripwolf CEO), Keith Jenkins (@Velvet Escape & Global Bloggers Network), Janice Waugh (@SoloTraveler & Global Bloggers Network), Abigail King (@InsideTravel Lab), John O’Nolan (@John O’Nolan) and Debbie Hindle (MD of FourBGB).

Is TBU right for me?

Like TBEX, TBU caters primarily to bloggers. At the Innsbruck conference, every delegate receives a free city tour from a specialty trained guide. You can view more information on the tours here .

No matter which conference you choose, good luck networking and pitching. Stay tuned for more updates on how to make the best of your next travel writing conference!

I like this post. I think a lot of TBEX attendees, including myself, had never attended a blogging conference before and didn’t know there were so many options. I probably should have done TBU or Book Passage first.

If anybody wants to learn more on TBEX 2011, here is an article on the lessons of conference.

Travel Writers Conferences

Travel writers, conferences are great way to network and learn valuable travel writing tips from the pros. Meet editors, publishers, writers, and other contacts who can help you soar into a new career or further your travel writing prospects. Most conferences offer workshops, panels, and evening activities. Enjoy many hours of informal interaction between faculty and students that often last late into the evening.

Conferences

  • Travel & Words ( http://travelwritersconference.com/ ). Since 2008, Travel & Words has connected travel and lifestyle writers with the Pacific Northwest travel industry. At the annual conference, writers of all levels meet magazine editors who regularly publish on travel in the Northwest, connect with travel and tourism professionals to generate story leads, and participate in a variety of educational workshops. The conference is held in a different Northwest destination each year. In 2019, Travel & Words will be held March 31 – April 2 in Vancouver, Washington, and welcomes Caysey Welton from Folio: as keynote speaker.
  • Book Passage Travel Writers & Photographers Conference . Book Passage has been organizing and hosting this multi-track, information packed conference since 1981. Join publishers, editors, authors, literary agents, photographers, and writers in Corte Madera, CA. The faculty is comprised of many well-known and award-winning leaders of the travel writing industry. Alumni have published books, articles, and photos — many as the direct result of lessons learned and contacts made at the conference. Attendance is open to anyone who wishes to register. ( Editors Note: This conference is our favorite for the exceptionally high level of support, encouragement, education, and inspiration you’ll find. )
  • North American Travel Journalists Association . Another long-running travel writers conference (since 1982), the NATJA conference is a great opportunity to meet colleagues face to face, attend professional business development seminars, acquire great story leads, and discover inspiration. Attendance is open to anyone who wishes to register, but NATJA members receive a discount on conference fees
  • International Society for Travel Writing . “International Society for Travel Writing’s conferences feature networking events as well as scholarly and educational presentations relating to the history, culture, and techniques of travel writing.” FYI : you must be a member of ISTW to attend the conference!
  • Travel Classics . Travel Classics conference offers low writer/editor ratio and editor presentations and panel discussions. Schedule a one-on-one meeting with four or more editors.
  • TBEX – Billing itself as “the world’s largest gathering of travel bloggers, writers, new media content creators, and social media savvy travel industry professionals” and – with the demise of the formerly fabulous BlogWorldExpo – it is. Generally held twice (or more) each year, with one gathering typically in North America and one in Europe or elsewhere, it’s a terrific conference for learning the art of digital journalism and making both friends and industry contacts.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

travel writers conference

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

travel writers conference

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

travel writers conference

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

travel writers conference

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

travel writers conference

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

travel writers conference

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

travel writers conference

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.
