Burg Linn geht zurück auf einen Wohn- und Wehrturm der Edelherren Otto und seines Bruders Gerlachus von Lynn zurück. Anfang des 14. Jahrhunderts begann der Ausbau zur landesherrlichen Verteidigungsanlage. Heute bietet sie ein unverfälschtes Bild einer mittelalterlichen Burg mit Bergfried, Zinnen, Wassergraben, Türmen, Burgverlies, Kapelle, Palas und einer intakten Vorburg. Im Untergeschoss des Kapellenturms am Torgebäude befindet sich die gotische Burgkapelle aus dem 14. Jahrhundert, die sich mit einem großen Spitzbogen zum Pallassaal hin öffnet. Die Burg ist umgeben von der weithin erhaltenen mittelalterlichen Anlage des ehemals kurkölnischen Städtchens Linn mit ausgedehnten Parkanlagen, die auch einen Teil der zur früheren Befestigung gehörenden Gräben und Bastionen einschließen. Burg Linn wurde bis 1926 renoviert und zum Landesmuseum ausgebaut, 1930 ergänzt um das Jagdschlösschen. Gemeinsam mit dem in unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft befindlichen Archäologischen Museum bilden Burg und Jagdschlösschen heute das Museumszentrum Burg Linn.

Die Geismühle ist eine zwischen Krefeld und Meerbusch gelegene Turmwindmühle. Das rund 700 Jahre alte Bauwerk gilt als eine der ältesten erhaltenen Windmühlen in der Region Niederrhein. Der Name Geis(t)mühle leitet sich vermutlich vom Standort der Mühle ab, einem Geest, d. h. einem trockenen, unfruchtbaren Sandrücken. Die etwas untypische Form der Mühle deutet auf ihren Ursprung als vorgelagerter Wehr- und Wachturm der nahen Burg Linn hin. Hiervon zeugen die als Schießscharten ausgeführten Fenster und die Überreste von zwei Kaminen im Inneren. Vom Turm aus kontrollierten die Drosten des Grafen von Kleve den in der Nähe verlaufende Hohe Weg, eine mittelalterliche Fernhandelsstraße. Seit einer grundlegenden Renovierung 2006/07 ist das Mahlwerk wieder voll betriebstüchtig. Die Mühle wird vom Bauverein Geismühle Krefeld-Oppum e.V. gepflegt, gehört zum Museumszentrum Linn.

Theater Krefeld

Die Theater Krefeld und Mönchengladbach sind aus dem Zusammenschluss der ehemals städtischen Theater von Krefeld und Mönchengladbach entstanden. Heute ist es als klassisches Dreispartenhaus aus Schauspiel, Musiktheater und Ballett aufgestellt. Zudem gehören die Niederrheinischen Sinfoniker mit zum Haus, die auch die Aufgaben als Theater- und Sinfonieorchester übernehmen. Ab 1952 war die Spielstädte in Krefeld zunächst ein Provisorium am Theaterplatz, die sogenannte Kulturscheune. Am 12. Januar 1963 wurde das neue Stadttheater, das auch heute noch bespielt wird, mit „Don Giovanni“ eröffnet. Zum 1. Januar 2011 wurden die Vereinigten Städtischen Bühnen in eine gemeinnützige GmbH umgewandelt und das Konzept „Theater mit Zukunft“ vereinbart. Dieses sichert die Zuschüsse der Städte und Sparmaßnahmen auf Seiten des Theaters für jeweils fünf Jahre. Dieses führte zu einer erfolgreichen Auslastung des Gemeinschaftstheaters von 82 Prozent. 2016 und 2017 fand in Krefeld das Welcome Now-Festival statt, dessen Einnahmen dem Krefelder Flüchtlingsrat zugutekamen. Dort traten Musiker (u.a. Fog Joggers, Patrick Richardt, Horst Hansen Trio) sowie Poetry Slammer auf. 2018 fand das Festival in Mönchengladbach statt. Hülser Berg

Mit 63 Metern ist der Hülser Berg die höchste natürliche Erhebung Krefelds und liegt etwa neun Kilometer vom TRIP INN Hotel Krefeld entfernt im Ortsteil Hüls. Der Hülser Berg entstand als Teil des Niederrheinischen Höhenzuges während des Drenthe-Vorstoßes der Saale-Eiszeit vor ca. 150.000 Jahren. Der Hülser Berg ist ein abwechslungsreiches Naherholungsgebiet, das neben Kinderspielplätzen, Trimm-dich- und Waldlehrpfad zahlreiche Wanderwege bietet und als Höhepunkt im wahrsten Wortsinn den Johannisturm, eine 30 m hohe Aussichtsplattform. Haus Lange und Haus Esters

Die Stadtvillen Haus Esters und Haus Lange wurden 1927/28 von Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, einem führenden Vertreter des Neuen Bauens, als Privathäuser für die befreundeten Seidenindustriellen Hermann Lange und Dr. Josef Esters entworfen und bis 1930 fertiggestellt. Beide Häuser sind weitgehend im Originalzustand erhalten und zeigen Mies van der Rohes Ansinnen, eine neue Raumauffassung mit der Alltagstauglichkeit von Wohnhäusern zu vereinen: Klare rechtwinklige Formen treffen auf offene Raumfolgen und große Fenster, die das Innere mit den Gartenanlagen verbinden. Die Konstruktion der Backsteinvillen wird von Stahlträgern unterstützt, die zu einem großen Teil waagerecht in den Böden des ersten Geschosses liegen, die Backsteine selbst übernehmen keine tragende Funktion. Das Stahlträgergerüst erlaubte es dem Architekten, Wände relativ frei zu setzen und große Fensteröffnungen zu schaffen. So konnten einzelne kubische Baueinheiten entstehen, die Schachteln gleichen. Im Inneren greifen die Raumsegmente ineinander über und deuten den für Mies van der Rohe typischen offenen Grundriss an – auch wenn die Räume durch Türen getrennt werden konnten. Der Krefelder Stadtwald ist ein kultiviertes Waldgebiet inmitten der Stadt und umfasst eine Fläche von 120 ha. Dort findet man eine große Wiese mit Fußballtoren, einen Kinderspielplatz, eine große, verzweigte Weiheranlage mit einem Tretbootverleih und Spazierwegen. Hier befindeet sich ebenfalls eine der schönsten deutschen Galopprennbahnen, ein Golfplatz, ein Hockeyplatz sowie Tennisplätze. Das Stadtwaldhaus mit einem der größten Biergärten außerhalb Bayerns bietet Platz im Freien für tausende Gäste. Der Landschaftspark wurde 2004/2005 als herausragender Park in die Straße der Gartenkunst zwischen Rhein und Maas aufgenommen. Zurückzuführen ist der Stadtwald auf den Krefelder Seidenbaron Wilhelm Deuß, der das Gebiet 1897 als Schenkung der Stadt Krefeld überließ, verbunden mit der Auflage, den Stadtwald auszubauen, aufzuforsten und als Erholungsgebiet für die Krefelder Bevölkerung auszubauen. Krefelder Zoo

Im Krefelder Zoo findet man auf einer Fläche von 14 Hektar rund 1000 Tiere aus rund 170 verschiedenen Arten. Schwerpunkt des Zoos sind Menschenaffen, Großkatzen, afrikanische Savannenbewohner und tropische Vogelarten. Für subtropische und tropische Arten stehen dem Zoo drei Warmhäuser zur Verfügung: das Affentropenhaus mit seinen Flachlandgorillas, Schimpansen und Orang-Utans, die Vogeltropenhalle und das 1998 eröffnete große Regenwaldhaus. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt des Zoos liegt somit bei der südamerikanischen Tier- und Pflanzenwelt. Dort kann man Zweifinger-Faultiere, Weißgesicht-Sakis, Blumenfledermäuse, Basilisken, Leguane und zahlreiche tropische Schmetterlingsarten besichtigen. Foto: Bild von Herbert Aust auf Pixabay

Altstadt Linn

Der Krefelder Stadtteil Linn beeindruckt mit seinem einen komplett erhaltenen mittelalterlichen Stadtkern, der unter Denkmalschutz steht. Ein Schlösschen, eine Burg und eine historische Wassermühle machen den besonderen Charme von Linn aus. Mit kurfürstlichem Jagdschloss, Niederrheinischem Landschaftsmuseum und Deutschem Textilmuseum, das über eine der international wichtigsten Sammlungen von historischen Textilien mit etwa 30.000 Objekten aus allen Teilen der Welt verfügt, ist Linn ein bedeutsames Museumszentrum. Für Radfahrer auf dem Rheinradweg und Pilger auf dem Jakobspilgerweg 4 ist Linn ein lohnenswertes Ziel. Bei der Erweiterung des Linner Hafens 1971–1978 fand man die Überreste einer alten römischen Kaianlage und auch drei mittelalterliche Schiffe unter dem Schwemmsand. Heute ist einer der Kähne in einer eigens dafür errichteten Halle im Niederrheinmuseum des Museumszentrums Burg Linn zu besichtigen.

Als wirtschaftliches Zentrum im Herzen Europas ist Düsseldorf traditionell der Standort vieler Handelsunternehmen. Die Metro AG mit ihrem Sitz in der Metrostraße im östlichen Stadtteil Flingern-Nord gehört zu den größten internationalen Playern im Bereich des Groß- und Einzelhandels. Von hier aus werden die Geschicke der Metro-Cash-&-Carry-Märkte und der Real-Handelskette gelenkt. Seit der Gründung im Jahre 1963 ist die Kette gewaltig gewachsen. Das aus den USA importierte Geschäftsmodell des Selbstbedienungsgroßmarktes für Großhändler war von Erfolg getragen. Das führte bald zur Gründung von Märkten in ganz Europa und seit 1996 auch in China. Der Metro-Konzern übernahm zeitweise Kaufhof und weitere Fachmärkte wie Mediamarkt, Saturn, das Computerhandelsunternehmen Vobis und andere Märkte. Metro beschäftigt weltweit an die Hundertfünfzigtausend Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter. In Düsseldorf sind etwa Zehntausend Mitarbeiter für Metro tätig. Der nahe gelegene große Düsseldorfer Metromarkt wurde grundlegend renoviert und modernisiert. Dabei entwickelt sich Metro passend zur städtischen Konsumszene immer stärker zum Großhändler für Premium-Produkte, etwa in seinen „Erlesenen Welten“ im Düsseldorfer Markt.

Henkel AG & Co. KGaA

Henkel mit Sitz in Düsseldorf-Holthausen in der Henkelstraße ist ein Düsseldorfer Traditionsunternehmen von Weltruf. Mehr als 80 % der Mitarbeiter sind außerhalb Deutschlands beschäftigt. Henkel beschäftigt in Düsseldorf etwa fünftausendfünfhundert Mitarbeiter. Mit 20 Milliarden Jahresumsatz gehört Henkel zu den großen Herstellern und den 300 größten Unternehmen weltweit. Das globale Unternehmen wird aus dem Düsseldorfer Hauptsitz gesteuert. Immer wieder überrascht das Unternehmen die Fachwelt mit völlig neuen, revolutionären Produkten, die hier in Düsseldorf erdacht werden. So werden die leistungsfähigen Klebstoffe von Henkel in der Luft- und Raumfahrt eingesetzt. Der Konsument kennt Henkel von Marken wie Persil, Pril, Purex, Weißer Riese, Perwoll, Fewa, Somat, Sidolin, Ata und Bref im Waschmittelsektor. ThyssenKrupp Elevator AG

Die ThyssenKrupp Elevator AG hat ihren Sitz in Düsseldorf. Das Unternehmen betreibt Unternehmensteile wie die Niederlassung Düsseldorf in der Angermunder Straße. Weltweit hat der Technologieführer am Aufzugsmarkt Kunden in 150 Ländern und unterhält über 1.000 Vertriebs- und Servicestandorte in der ganzen Welt. Das Unternehmen gehört zum Industriekonzern ThyssenKrupp, dessen Wurzeln bis zum Jahre 1811 zurückreichen. Die Elevator AG hat knapp 10 Milliarden Euro Umsatz und beschäftigt weltweit mehr als 50.000 Mitarbeiter. Neben den Aufzügen vertreibt die AG Fahrtreppen, Fluggastbrücken, Treppenlifte und weitere innovative Produkte. Rheinmetall AG

Die Rheinmetall AG mit Sitz in Düsseldorf am Rheinmetallplatz produziert Rüstungsgüter und Automobilteile. Hier am ehemaligen Industriestandort residiert die Unternehmensleitung mit ihren Stabsabteilungen. Das Unternehmen hat auf dem Industriegelände neue architektonische Stilelemente mit traditionellen Industriegebäuden verbunden. Rheinmetall besitzt eine lange Industrietradition in Deutschland und wurde 1889 gegründet. Das Rheinmetallwerk in Düsseldorf lieferte schwerpunktmäßig Munition. Mit knapp 23.000 Mitarbeitern, davon rund 11.500 in Düsseldorf, erwirtschaftet der Konzern etwa 6 Milliarden Euro Umsatz. I struggle to find the words to express how aweful this so called hotel was. Genuinely the worst I have ever stayed in. How this hotel has 3* is beyond me.

The rooms were very recently refurbished. Thus, while the building is old an ugly, the rooms are in an excellent state. The internet is poor, however, and only works when few people use it. Overall, it is good value for money.
