1 Davidson College

unc college tours

This small liberal arts school’s buildings are woven throughout town, offering numerous opportunities for inspiration. As a National Arboretum , the setting is perfect for paths that showcase more than 3,000 trees and shrubs. Along with Mother Nature’s works of art, sculptures by artists Magdalena Abakanowicz, Auguste Rodin and Yinka Shonibare are also admired all across campus. Three galleries with a full schedule of exhibitions can be found at the Visual Arts Center. Just up the road is The Farm at Davidson , which grows produce for the college’s dining services. To caffeinate like you're preparing for an all-nighter, swing by the original Summit Coffee on Main Street; the co-owners are Davidson alumni.

2 Duke University

unc college tours

Any visitor to Durham can find inspiration in the unique activities found on Duke’s campus. The Sarah P. Duke Gardens draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year thanks to 55 acres of Italian-style terrace gardens, a rose garden and a koi pond topped with water lilies. For a one-of-a-kind stop, book a tour at the Duke Lemur Center , a world leader in the study, care and protection of the endangered mammals. And for sports lovers, the Robert Trent Jones Sr.-designed Duke University Golf Club is recognized as one of the Southeast's best, while the Duke Basketball Museum brings the storied program to life on a daily basis.

3 Elon University

A designated botanical garden, Elon’s 656-acre campus is a nature lover’s haven. Follow the campus tree map to find 125 trees along a 1.25-mile walk through campus, visit the community garden and schedule a tour of the school’s 15-acre solar farm, part of the Environmental Center at Loy Farm . Then head downtown to The Oak House for a beverage and a bite and check out some local shops, or grab a pastry to go and picnic at the nearby Beth Schmidt Park , which has beautiful walking trails, a playground and garden. Treat yourself to a cup or cone at Smitty’s Homemade Ice Cream before calling it a day. Staying the night? The Inn at Elon is the choice: All profits from the inn are dedicated to funding student scholarships.

4 North Carolina A&T

Worm's-eye view of February One Monument in front of brick Dudley Building on campus.

NC A&T is the nation’s largest HBCU. The university played a central role in the Civil Rights Movement when four students led a sit-in at Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro in 1960, and the location now operates as the International Civil Rights Center & Museum . After the museum tour, head to the Dudley Building on campus to see the A&T Four Monument, which honors the freshmen who led the sit-in. Visit in fall and catch a football game to see the famous Blue and Gold Marching Machine, whose high-energy performances have been getting fans on their feet for years.

5 North Carolina Central University

Exterior of brick cultural building with people mingling outside

The NCCU campus is included in the National Register of Historic Places for good reason – it’s been a key piece of Durham history for more than 100 years. As you walk among the historic buildings throughout campus, be sure to check out a newer addition, the Centennial Chapel and Garden, built in 2010 to celebrate the university’s centennial. It’s a great place to pull out picnic supplies from Durham Co-op Market before exploring more of downtown. Start with West Parrish Street, often referred to as Black Wall Street because of its role as a hub for Black-owned businesses and economic growth in the early 1900s. Then visit the Museum of Durham History or any of the History Groves – groupings of native trees planted to honor those who shaped the community. Speaking of community, the ties are strong at the Hayti Heritage Center , which hosts events, programs and festivals.

6 North Carolina State University

unc college tours

NC State is the ideal mix of city and rural life. On the Centennial Campus, Lake Raleigh Woods is designated a “hallowed place,” meaning its past helps forge the future of research and education. The 96-acre forest welcomes researchers as well as bird-watchers and those looking for a peaceful stroll. Down the road from main campus is the JC Raulston Arboretum and butterfly garden, where the collection of plants has attracted about 60 species of butterflies and moths over the years. If you’re looking for a place to reunite with old friends from school, the Lonnie Poole Golf Course – the only collegiate course in the world designed by Arnold Palmer – is the perfect spot.

7 Shaw University

Aerial view of Dorothea Dix Park with Raleigh skyline in distance during daytime

The first HBCU in the South and among the oldest in the nation, Shaw sits in the heart of the historic district downtown – and its ties to history remain strong, from the stunning memorial garden on campus to its multiple historic landmark buildings. Head to Estey Hall – built in 1874, it’s the oldest surviving Shaw building and the first structure built for the higher education of African American women. Because of Shaw’s central location, walk or drive from campus to many nearby favorites. Refuel Southern-style at Big Ed’s and then keep the fun going – kids of all ages love Pullen Park's amusement rides, paddle boats and swimming. Families can enjoy awesome time indoors at the nearby Marbles Kids Museum or NC Museum of Natural Sciences . If your kids are of the four-legged variety, Dorothea Dix Park has an area just for dogs (and plenty of open-air activities for humans too).

8 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

unc college tours

Visit the country’s first public university for a few firsts of your own. For basketball fans, Carolina Basketball Museum is a must, where names like Dean Smith and Michael Jordan might ring a bell. The Ackland Art Museum hosts a permanent collection of more than 19,000 works of art, while the Morehead Planetarium offers shows like “Carolina Skies,” a live star show that takes you on a journey through the nighttime sky. Most alumni will tell you a stroll along Franklin Street is a necessary intro to Chapel Hill life. For lunch, few things are better than a hot dog and old-fashioned soda at the legendary Sutton’s Drug Store . It’s been feeding hungry Tar Heels since 1923.

9 University of North Carolina at Charlotte

unc college tours

Just 15 minutes northeast of Uptown, UNC Charlotte boasts a 1,000-acre campus that’s still close to Charlotte’s vibrant NoDa, Plaza Midwood and South End neighborhoods. Start your visit with a walk through the botanical gardens , home to three different gardens with 16 collections. Over in the art department, check out three exhibition spaces in the Rowe Arts Building , which displays the work of students, faculty and visiting artists. For a good meal, students rave about Passage to India .

10 University of North Carolina at Greensboro

A stroll through this campus brings tons of visual intrigue, with architectural diversity, historic buildings and storied landmarks – like the 9-foot bronze statue of Minerva by artist James Barnhill, and The Rawk, a boulder painted and repainted with well wishes and announcements nearly every day. Speaking of art, make sure you head to Weatherspoon Art Museum in the heart of campus. Admission is free to its six galleries and sculpture courtyard, and coffee and baked goods are offered most weekdays. Find more inspiration at any of Greensboro’s outdoor oases, from the 17-acre Greensboro Arboretum to Gateway Gardens , a whimsical entryway to the city integrating elements of history, movement and play.

11 Wake Forest University

unc college tours

Recreate carefree college days at Davis Field by swinging under the towering trees or taking time for a picnic. For a learning opportunity, visit the only museum in North Carolina dedicated to the study of global cultures at the Museum of Anthropology . Catch up on a little botany 101 at the 134-acre Reynolda Gardens with beautiful woodlands, wetlands and a greenhouse. Don’t miss out on getting a unique souvenir at the Reynolda Village shops right next door. For your finale, enjoy a pitcher of beer at Shorty’s .

12 Winston-Salem State University

unc college tours

Wander through campus and admire public art sculptures, as well as massive murals by artist and North Carolina native John Biggers in the C.G. O’Kelly Library. The Diggs Gallery also operates as a cultural center with exhibitions and programs focused on African American and regional art (recognized by The Smithsonian as one of the nation’s best). If you’re looking for action: Every Saturday in spring and summer, Bowman Gray Stadium fills up the stands for short-track racing at NASCAR’S longest running weekly track. The whole family will love seeing multiple races at “The Madhouse.”

Course Planning

Advising Meetings and Expectations

Academic advisors serve as guides, supporting students throughout their educational journey. They offer personalized guidance on course selection, academic planning, and career pathways, helping students navigate the complexities of higher education. By providing resources, encouragement, and advocacy, advisors empower students to achieve their academic and professional goals. They foster a collaborative relationship, assisting students in overcoming challenges and making informed decisions that align with their aspirations. Ultimately, academic advisors play a crucial role in promoting student success and holistic development within the college environment.

unc college tours

How long is an advising meeting?

Advising sessions are typically 30 minutes long. To get the most out of your appointment, we recommend that you jot down any questions or concerns in advance of your meeting. If you have a scheduled appointment and something comes up, please be sure to cancel your appointment so another student may use that meeting time slot.

The course Catalog is a comprehensive publication that lists all the courses available for students to enroll in. It includes detailed descriptions of each course, prerequisites, credit hours, and departmental information. The Catalog serves as a guide for students to plan their academic journey and select courses that align with their interests and degree requirements.

Policies & Procedures

While it is your responsibility to review university and academic policies and procedures, we invite you to ask your academic advisor if you have any questions.

Departmental Advising

Within the College of Arts and Sciences at UNC, students benefit from academic guidance provided by both their major department and UNC Advising. The availability of departmental advisors varies, with some departments offering formal faculty advising systems while others provide more informal guidance. The department advisors assist students in selecting courses within their major, offer insights into career paths, and provide information on educational opportunities within the field.

Graduating tour guide welcomes visitors to campus

At the UNC Visitors Center, Kevin Rivera Araujo helps others “fall in love” with the place he calls home.

Kevin Rivera-Araujo speaking to visitors as he gives a tour of UNC-Chapel Hill.

Kevin Rivera Araujo has range.

As the Carolina senior leads a tour through the UNC Visitors Center , he tells guests all about the nation’s first public university. He covers the basics — class sizes, research opportunities, student housing, campus history and University traditions — and makes sure they know the proper name for the school color.

“It’s not sky blue. It’s not baby blue. It’s not powder blue,” Rivera Araujo explains. “It’s Carolina Blue.”

Rivera Araujo, a double major in psychology and Romance languages, has been setting the record straight on the best shade of blue for the last two years. As he prepares to graduate, he says this job is a highlight of his time at Carolina.

“I wish I would’ve started earlier because I really love it here,” says Rivera Araujo.

He was born in Dobson, North Carolina, roughly 100 miles northwest of Chapel Hill, and grew up there with his Mexican family. A first-generation college student, he came to UNC-Chapel Hill as a Carolina Covenant scholar .

After his sophomore year, Rivera Araujo was looking for a work study position and came across an opening for a tour guide. His friends told him they could see him giving tours and talking about the school.

Why did they think the job was a good fit for him?

“Just being able to talk to people,” he says. “I think that perfectly marries what we have to do here at the Visitors Center. We see visitors from all over the country, all over North Carolina and even all around the world.”

That ability to connect with people from all over has been one of Rivera Araujo’s favorite parts of the job. Sometimes visitors come from as far away as Sydney, Australia. And sometimes they turn out to be neighbors, like when he met a group from Elkin, close to his hometown in Surry County.

“My people!” he told them. “You get what I’m saying when I say I grew up in the middle of the woods.”

Kevin Rivera Araujo giving a tour of the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill.

“We really want to show you the school so you can also fall in love with it,” said Rivera Araujo (Jon Gardiner/UNC-Chapel Hill)

Regardless of where his visitors come from, Rivera Araujo knows the impact he and his fellow tour guides can have on a person’s experience visiting the University.

Last year, a student from Brazil sent Rivera Araujo a tour thank you message that included an important update: He was going to be a Tar Heel, and Rivera Araujo’s “killer tour” helped sell him.

“I love to hear that because that’s what we do here,” Rivera Araujo says. “That’s our purpose: We really want to show you the school so you can also fall in love with it.”

Following graduation, Rivera Araujo plans to take some time off while pondering graduate school and other interests, like podcasting.

Graduation has him thinking back to his first semester at Carolina, when he struggled to find his way around campus during the height of the pandemic. Back then, he reached out to the leader of his virtual first-year orientation, who showed him around.

“I will always cherish that,” Rivera Araujo says. “It’s always a memory that I carry because it meant a lot to me that she took that time just to help me out.”

Years later, he’s paying it forward with tours of a campus he’s a bit more familiar with now.

“I would never change it for anything,” he says of coming to Carolina.

In so many words, he tells the University’s visitors the same.

The small forward out of Napa, California currently plays at Prolific Prep and has 22 offers in his recruitment. As his recruitment continues on, things are starting to progress which includes visits. And for North Carolina, they could be in line for a visit this Fall.

Dybantsa talked to Travis Branham of 247Sports about his recruitment and he mentioned that he could set up a visit this Fall:

North Carolina:"Heard from him, I got offered towards the beginning of my Prolific season, they stay in contact with my dad. I might take a visit this fall but I will have to set that up with UNC, definitely."

Other programs involved in his recruitment include Arkansas , Kentucky , Auburn, and USC .  The 6-foot-8 small forward has already visited USC and Auburn in the process.

Dybantsa is a recruit to keep an eye on for the Tar Heels moving forward and it will be a big plus if they can get him on campus to make an impression.

HBCU Students And First Tee Alums Daryn Dickens, Darius Laws, Alex Burnett Golf At Wells Fargo Championship Pro-Am

Kyle t. mosley | may 9, 2024.

Daryn Dickens, Howard University student, plays in the Wells Fargo Championship Pro-Am with PGA TOUR Pro Tommy Fleetwood on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, in Charlotte, N.C.

  • Howard Bison
  • North Carolina Central Eagles
  • Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks

After an exhilarating day on the golf course, where she had the privilege of teaming up with professional golfers Tommy Fleetwood and Seamus Power, Daryn Dickens modestly shared her golfing experience with HBCU Legends.  "We just wrapped up. You finished 11 under. I don't think I played half-bad at all. I definitely left some birdies out there, but I'm not mad about it."

Daryn Dickens (Howard University) showcased her exceptional skills at the Wells Fargo Championship Pro-Am on Quail Hollow Club's  golf course in Charlotte, North Carolina. The freshman from Howard, Darius Laws (University of Maryland Eastern Shore), and Alexandre Burnett (North Carolina Central University) won the First Tee Alumni Entrepreneurs Program essay contest focusing on their futures as entrepreneurs and golfers. Winning the competition allowed the HBCU students to play a round with a professional golfer and former PGA Tour caddie, Michael Collins. Darius Laws interested in golf management is being mentored by Kenyatta Ramsey, Head of Diverse Player Services for the PGA TOUR.

“Wells Fargo has a long history of supporting HBCUs and is committed to advancing opportunities for diverse communities.  One way that’s on display here at the Wells Fargo Championship is through our longstanding partnership with First Tee. In addition to hosting a golf clinic for the local chapter in Charlotte, we are proud to have three First Tee graduates – who are current HBCU students – playing in Wednesday’s Pro-Am alongside a PGA TOUR Pro and gaining access to networking and mentorship opportunities off the course.”   Kristy Fercho, Head of Diverse Segments, Representation and Inclusion at Wells Fargo

Daryn Dickens

"I just finished my first year [at Howard] last week," Dickens said.  "And getting ready to go into my sophomore year in August.  I'm really excited. I had a great first year and got really involved. Academics were superb."   Superb is an understatement, as the aspiring attorney earned a 4.0 GPA in two semesters at Howard.

As a product of attorneys from the D.C. area, Dickens is "debating between criminal or civil rights law" as a career.   "I've learned being a history major, I've been able to explore just like a lot of the indifferences and injustices that we have faced as black people. I want to be a part of that movement. I feel like, you know, and talks about the civil rights movement."

She isn't a member of the Bison Golf Team but hopes to utilize her love for golf as a resource to open doors and dialogue for change before finishing at Howard and heading to law school.  "One of those things that I want to be a part of is the role in changing those laws and helping those who are affected by it."

Daryn Dickens

While on the beautiful Quail Hollow Club course, Fleetwood and Power gave the HBCU students a few pointers to enhance their game. Daryn specifically spoke to Fleetwood about practice and his regimen.  " I'm in college right now, and I don't play on the golf team, but, I still love to play golf. So fitting that in within my schedule, I want to make the most of my time because I can't go out every day to play."  With Power, he gave tips on putting and drives, which she immediately put into their round together.  "I had the opportunity to talk to Seamus about my putting, and, ironically, as soon as we finished talking about it, I had this long, like, 25-footer, and I sank it for an eagle."

Although Dickens doesn't see a future as a professional golfer, she believes Wells Fargo and First Tee have been tremendous for her and others from HBCUs.  "I'd like to give a big shout out to Wells Fargo for giving us this opportunity. First Tee helped me apply and get her, but Wells Fargo is offering us the opportunity to play with pros and be able to play Quail Hollow. Also, I feel like they truly care."

Wells Fargo has paired Daryn with a mentor who will be available for guidance and counseling until her graduation.   "That relationship is going to continue past this tournament this week that I'm here in Charlotte. And I'm truly grateful for an opportunity that Wells Fargo has given to us to let us, you know, be able to develop in our field that we want to."

2024 Wells Fargo Championship leaderboard: Rory McIlroy lurking as Xander Schauffele leads after Round 1

Mcilroy eyes his fourth title at quail hollow ahead of the year's second major championship.

rory-mcilroy-2024-wells-fargo-championship-round-1-g.jpg

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The first day of the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship ended with Xander Schauffele atop the leaderboard holding a three-stroke lead at 7 under but with Rory McIlroy top of mind. The three-time tournament winner was among the last on the golf course Thursday, and despite a bumpy back nine, was able to sign for a 4-under 67 to sit firmly in the rearview mirror of the leader. McIlroy is among a chasing pack that includes the likes of Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas and Max Homa.

"I'm hitting the ball really well again, with some of the shots that I hit out there today with the driver, some of the iron shots were much better, I feel like putting's good," McIlroy said. "And I felt like things were starting to turn around for me in New Orleans, played a good weekend there. Sort of just -- I got a really nice couple feelings in my swing that week, and I've just sort of tried to ingrain those over the last, whatever that is, 10 days. Yeah, it feels good. It was good to play a solid round of golf today. Left a couple out there, I feel, but at the same time, I've got three more days to try to build on what I've done today."

McIlroy's day began in emphatic fashion, signing for a turkey of birdies from holes No. 3-5. He immediately rose to the first page of the leaderboard, and his name would vault to the very top a couple holes later when a 55-foot eagle bid found the bottom of the cup. With a short par 4 and another par 5 among the ensuing holes, McIlroy had the look and runway of taking flight.

His ball did just that on the drivable par-4 8th as the world No. 2's tee shot finished beyond the green. What momentum was garnered the first seven holes was grounded the rest of the way in as McIlroy finished par-bogey on his front nine to turn in 4-under 31.

The recently turned 35-year-old seesawed on the back half with birdies on Nos. 10, 13 and 16 offset by bogeys on Nos. 11, 15 and 18. McIlroy missed out on a chance to inch closer to Schauffele by dropping a shot on the par-5 15th and missing a short birdie effort on the hole prior to set up a devilish bunker shot from just inside 50 yards, but he remains within reach. And whenever McIlroy is within reach at Quail Hollow, good things tend to happen.

1. Xander Schauffele (-7)

Schauffele's run of form has sprinted into this week with a near-flawless 7-under 64 in Round 1. Last year's runner-up will now look to do one better against a chasing pack littered with major champions. The Olympic gold medalist was impressive during the early action on Thursday -- a time during which many were confused. With Quail Hollow rain-soaked, competitors assumed the resurfaced greens would soften. That assumption never came to fruition, however.

Distance control with the irons became paramount, and there was none better than Schauffele. Consistently hitting his approach shots pin high, he was in full control up until the drivable par-4 8th where a generous ruling came to his aid. Receiving a free drop due to a Shotlink tower cable being in his line of sight, Schauffele saved par and tacked on a birdie on the par-4 finisher for good measure. Those are the exact breaks Schauffele has to take advantage of if he plans to win for the first time since the 2022 Scottish Open.

"I hit it in the trees. My ball was probably like a foot, 2 feet from the fence … If I went towards the green, the fence kind of worked this way, so I had what I could hit, a 4-iron or something low and just kind of run it through," Schauffele said. "If it gets stuck, I'll just kind of hit my next one out. But I brought the rules official in there with me because I was like, 'you've got to be OK with this because this is literally the only shot I can hit.' So Austin and I moved two massive rocks that weren't embedded, and then I got relief out of the junk and then hit a pretty good shot on the green from there. What was a very stressful moment turned into a pretty stressless par."

Other contenders

T2. Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Alex Noren (-4) T5. Justin Thomas, Sungjae Im, Jason Day, Sepp Straka, Lee Hodges, Russell Henley, Taylor Moore (-3)

There is a quiet confidence about Morikawa right now that seems to grow louder and louder by the day. Speaking with CBS Sports earlier in the week, the two-time major champion insisted he is very close to the player he was just a few years ago and that stringing together four quality rounds is just around the corner. Despite not traveling to Charlotte too often in his career (this is only his second start at Quail Hollow), Morikawa looked right at home en route to his 4-under 67. He didn't miss an iron shot left, took advantage of the holes he was supposed to and played the style of golf that will be successful not only this week but, more importantly, next. He may string together his four rounds this week and win, but he could also string together four months and do some major damage in the process.

"I've seen spurts here and there throughout the past few years," Morikawa said. "I want to go on a run essentially, right? You want to go on a nice stretch of golf. So it was nice to obviously have that finish at the Masters even though it didn't play out the way I wanted, but knowing that this week is going to be great prep, especially going into next week, just got to dial in everything as much as we can and be ready."

2024 Wells Fargo Championship updated odd, picks

  • Xander Schauffele: 2-1
  • Rory McIlroy: 3-1
  • Collin Morikawa: 9-1
  • Justin Thomas: 14-1
  • Max Homa: 16-1
  • Alex Noren: 18-1

Schauffele was my selection at the beginning of the week, and he is my selection after Thursday. If you're just now jumping into the tournament, there may be a better ride to catch as 2-1 feels short despite his three-stroke lead. Max Homa was impressive in Round 1 with his 2-under 69. After experiencing a sloppy start, the 2019 champion bounced back and looks primed to contend at Quail Hollow once again.
