On April 15, students, faculty and alumni from the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (UB SPPS) traveled to Albany on Pharmacy Lobby Day to advocate for the profession of pharmacy.

Pharmacy Lobby Day in Albany is an annual event providing PharmD students and pharmacy professionals the opportunity to meet face-to-face with their respective assemblymembers and legislators to discuss issues impacting pharmacists and to educate legislators on how pharmacy legislation will ensure New York State residents receive the best care.

Our Student Pharmacists' Association of Western New York (SPAWNY) and our student chapter of the Pharmacists Society of the State of New York (SPSSNY) organized this year’s event and nearly 30 students, five faculty and two alumni made the trip to Albany. Thanks to Walgreens for their sponsorship and support of travel expenses.

“Pharmacy Lobby Day gives us the opportunity to see firsthand what it takes for legislation to change for the pharmacy profession,” says Sophia Osmond, PharmD ’25, SPAWNY president and SPSSNY vice president. “Speaking directly to the legislators allows us to make connections and enlighten legislators on why we seek these changes. We hope to provide a unique perspective that comes from students who want to practice at the top of our profession because we want the ability to provide the absolute best quality care to our patients.”

Meetings occurred with Assemblymember John T. McDonald, Senators Dean Murray, Robert Ortt, Alexis Weik, Pamela Helming, Thomas O’Mara, John Mannion, Joseph Addabbo, Jr., George Borrello, James Tedisco, Peter Oberacker and Shelley Mayer, the offices of Senators Patrick Gallivan, Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, Anthony Palumbo, Timothy Kennedy, Jonathan Rivera, and the offices of Assemblymembers Phillip Steck, Mary Beth Walsh, Andrew Hevesi, Karen McMahon and Crystal Peoples-Stokes to advocate for the following legislation:

  • Pharmacist CLIA-Waved Testing (S3467A, Rivera/ A6627B, McDonald): amend public health and education laws to include pharmacists as qualified healthcare professionals to order and administer certain Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)-waived tests. This would allow pharmacists to perform clinical laboratory tests on patients to expedite health assessment, diagnosis or treatment of disease.
  • Expanded Access to Treatment (S7839, Rivera/ A8596, McDonald): allow pharmacists to begin the initial stages of care following a positive test result for COVID-19, Streptococcal A and Influenza to patients in accordance with New York State Department of Health protocols. The bill includes requirements for pharmacists to communicate case information and treatment provided to a patient’s designated provider as well as referral protocols and requirements for pharmacists to provide patients with available primary care providers to ensure continuity of care.
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician Practice (S8545, Cooney/ A9251, Solages): expand the practice of registered pharmacy technicians in New York State, allowing registered pharmacy technicians to practice in all pharmacy settings and authorizes registered pharmacy technicians to do compounding and to administer vaccinations under the direct supervision of licensed pharmacists.

PharmD students from Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Touro College of Pharmacy, Long Island University College of Pharmacy and St. John Fisher Wegmans School of Pharmacy also attended the legislative sessions.

A Danish neuroscientist, most well known for discovering the glymphatic system, provided a synergistic connection as the featured speaker at the eighth annual Anne and Harold Brody Memorial Lecture , sponsored by the Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences .

Maiken Nedergaard, MD, DMSc, is Dean’s Professor and co-director of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine in the Department of Neurology at the University of Rochester. She also holds an appointment as professor of glial cell biology in the Center for Neuroscience at the University of Copenhagen.

Harold Brody, MD, PhD, who came to the University at Buffalo in 1954, was a pioneer in studying aging changes in the human brain. In 1963, he became the first UB faculty member to be named a Fulbright fellow, which he spent at the University of Copenhagen continuing his studies on aging in the nervous system.

In his introduction of Nedergaard, Christopher S. Cohan, PhD , SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of pathology and anatomical sciences, noted “we are especially grateful to have you with us here today. Your presence reestablishes the connection between Harold Brody and the University of Copenhagen that influenced so much of his life.”

Monumental Breakthrough

Nedergaard’s research spans from neuron-glia interactions to the role of the glymphatic system in the sleep-wake cycle and in aging, small vessel disease, stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Her talk, titled “The Glymphatic System,” provided an overview of portions of her groundbreaking research, including describing in 2012 the previously unknown glymphatic system, the brain’s sleep-time cleansing mechanism. The discovery earned her the “Breakthrough of the Year” honor from Science Magazine.

The system’s name is a combination of glia and lymphatic because Nedergaard and her colleagues advanced the idea that cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) could act as an export pathway for proteins from the brain, much like the lymphatic system collects and removes unused nutrients and cellular waste from the rest of the body.

Nedergaard also coined the term “glymphatics,” to describe how astrocytes at surrounding capillaries regulate the flow of CSF through brain tissue and that acts as a clearance system to clear out brain metabolites and toxic molecules that accumulate in the interstitial fluids of the brain.

Beneficial ‘Brainwashing’ During Sleep

In rodent studies, Nedergaard and her colleagues observed the glymphatic system was almost 10-fold more active during the sleep state as it conducted a beneficial “brainwashing.”

The researchers also found the brain’s cells reduce in size during sleep, creating space for CSF to wash more freely through brain tissue.

“It was fascinating to find the awake brain is completely capable of suppressing the influx of CSF,” she said. “It is probably happening because you cannot have neurocircuitry working if there is fluid flow because you lose the position of synaptic transmission if glutamate is transported from one synapse to the other, but we do not know for sure.”

Nedergaard’s discoveries, in part, have transformed scientists’ understanding of the biological purposes of sleep and point to new ways to treat neurological disorders.

“Sleep is non-negotiable. We need to sleep,” she said. “The brain is uniquely sensitive to sleep deprivation.”

Studies have shown that sleep deprivation accelerates amyloid-beta accumulation in mice, Nedergaard noted, adding that Alzheimer’s disease and other neurogenerative diseases are all linked to the accumulation of protein.

The researchers have speculated that disrupted sleep which impairs the glymphatic system could be a driver of Alzheimer’s disease.

“Studies have shown that six hours or less of sleep per night increases dementia risk by as much as 30 percent,” Nedergaard said.

Potential Therapeutic Target for TBI

Nedergaard also sees glymphatics as a potential therapeutic target for TBI, noting the neurotransmitter noradrenaline is one of the main triggers of cerebral edema.

“Noradrenaline is a master regulator of glymphatic flow and TBI increases noradrenaline for prolonged periods,” she said. “It can often stay high for days or weeks after TBI.”

The researchers noted noradrenaline restricts the movement of fluid in the section of the brain where CSF drains.

To counteract this, they used a combination of alpha- and beta-blockers in mice studies to reopen gates to the lymph nodes, thus relieving pressure and leading to reduced swelling.

Nedergaard says if the inhibitors are given right away after TBI, “you can completely avoid edema.”

Multiple International Awards During Career

Nedergaard received her medical degree from the University of Copenhagen in 1983 and completed residencies in neurology and neurosurgery, also at the University of Copenhagen.

She completed postdoctoral training there as well in physiology and neuropathology.

Nedergaard came to the United States to work at Cornell University Medical School for postdoctoral training in neuroscience, before returning to the University of Copenhagen to receive her doctor of medical science degree in neuroscience.

She has received more than 11 international awards from a variety of countries, including Denmark, Spain, China and the United States. Nedergaard has 10 patents, published over 400 journal articles and she has published one book and 16 book chapters.

In 2023, she received the 21 st Perl-UNC Neuroscience Prize from the UNC School of Medicine. Past winners include six scientists who went on to win the Nobel Prize.

She also won the 2023 Anders Jahre’s Award for Medical Research, honoring outstanding international research.

Part of Brody’s Curriculum Remains in Use

Prior to the April 12 lecture, John E. Tomaszewski, MD , SUNY Distinguished Professor and Peter A. Nickerson, PhD, Professor and Chair of pathology and anatomical sciences, gave a brief biographical overview of Brody.

“The annual Brody Lecture is held to celebrate the decades of contributions Harold Brody made to UB,” he said. “He left college in 1942 to enlist in the U.S. Army where he became a neurosurgical assistant, which had a profound effect on his career.”

After finishing military service, Brody completed college at Western Reserve University, obtained his doctoral degree at the University of Minnesota and came to the University at Buffalo, joining the Department of Anatomy. While in Buffalo, he earned his medical degree in 1961.

Brody served as professor and chair of the Department of Anatomy from 1971 to 1992. He served as a founding member of the National Advisory Council of the National Institutes of Health on Aging.

“Dr. Brody was known as an outstanding teacher and that is part of the genesis of this lecture series,” Tomaszewski said. “He developed curriculum that is still being used, in part, today in teaching, so he was well ahead of this time.”

Brody lecturers are selected for their contributions to science in general and neuroscience in particular, their practice of medicine, and their community leadership.

UB celebrates Earth Day with climate action update

campus news

Sustainability concept featuring raised hands with a leaf icon in the center of the palms, all in shades of green.

By DAVID J. HILL

Published April 22, 2024

That’s what it will take for UB to achieve its goal of carbon neutrality by 2030.

That message of collective action will also be on full display in the Center for the Arts Mainstage Theatre this morning, where more than 200 representatives from every decanal and administrative unit on campus will gather for the university’s fifth Climate Action Plan update.

It’s a celebration not only of the fact that today is Earth Day, but also the momentum the campus community has built in recent years to advance UB’s climate action work (This short video  features a few key examples).

“Our university has shown a streak of radical pragmatic idealism, and we are not only ready, but are leading. And we are leading because of you,” says Ryan McPherson, UB’s chief sustainability officer. “Whether we’re facing a pandemic, climate-induced extreme weather, the rise of artificial intelligence, democracy under threat, or conflicts across the globe, you are making the necessary changes and building the world we seek every day.”

Over the past year, some of that work has taken place in very visible ways, such as the completed renovation of Crosby Hall on the South Campus, and the nearly completed renovation of Foster Hall, both of which have been converted into low-carbon buildings that are powered, cooled and heated by renewable energy.

A group of people hold larg placcards overhead with icons representing various aspects of UB's Climaten Action Plan.

Much is happening behind the scenes, too. For example, as part of the university’s decarbonization strategy for the South Campus, water-cooled heat pumps were installed in both Crosby and Foster. And work has begun on planning for the phasing out of natural gas and decarbonization for the North Campus, notes Tonga Pham, associate vice president, University Facilities.

In addition, UB is transitioning nearly half of its Stampede buses to battery-powered electric vehicles, which will decrease the university’s diesel fuel consumption to the tune of 70,000 gallons, according to Chris Austin, director, Parking and Transportation Services.

Construction will soon get underway on a new fleet electric-vehicle charging lot that will have enough capacity to charge more than 50 vehicles at once with a bank of Level 2 and 3 chargers. This complements the electric-vehicle chargers already available to student, staff and faculty commuters. Much of this work has and will be funded through the creation of a new recurring Climate Action Fund as part of UB’s budget process.

On the zero-waste front, UB has conducted a campuswide waste audit to get a better perspective on where its opportunities lie, and is nearing the completion of its strategic plan to achieve a 90% diversion of waste from landfill and incineration. In addition, the university will be investing in a state-of-the-art collection infrastructure, with a focus on a circular system. UB is also working to implement the new SUNY policy eliminating single-use plastics , which UB helped craft.

Through a partnership with Campus Dining and Shops, UB is providing carbon footprint ratings on ingredients used in foods served on campus, in addition to noting those that are vegetarian and vegan. Emissions from food represent 25% of UB’s carbon footprint.

UB is also working to electronically capture carbon emissions associated with university employee travel, according to Beth Corry, associate vice president and controller for business services.

While much of UB’s climate action work has relied heavily on the campus community, the university has also been working closely with Second Nature, the national climate action higher education organization.

Late last year, Second Nature awarded UB a Catalyst Grant to fund projects designated to advance climate justice, spark decarbonization and build climate resilience between the university and the community. This work is supporting a series of workshops and dialogues that will engage young people both on and off campus in prioritizing climate action efforts with faculty at the university.

And soon, UB will begin receiving pro-bono consulting services from Brailsford and Dunlavey — one of the top higher education decarbonization firms in the country — to better help the university develop detailed and specific goals pegged to definitive timelines that will provide clear budgetary implications across all emission streams at UB. The university was selected through a competitive application process to receive these services.

In addition, the consulting work will help UB develop a detailed decarbonization and monitoring system that dials in the university’s climate neutrality efforts.

“While we have made strong progress over the past few years, we have more work to do, and by leveraging outside expertise we are confident it will complement and propel our existing efforts into a detailed and impactful roadmap that can not only be effectively communicated to stakeholders but provide the next critical step in advancing UB’s climate neutrality work,” says Laura Hubbard, vice president for finance and administration.
