Charlestown’s Shipwreck Treasure Museum has just announced details for the return of their popular Tunnel of Lights event that will run from late November through to the end of December.

“We’re particularly excited to be welcoming Santa to Charlestown this time. Accompanied by his elves, he will be with us meeting children in his magical grotto during December.”

It will be available complete with fluttering snow for families to book to capture some fun festive photos and videos. Tasty festive refreshments will be available during the event at the attraction’s newly opened coffee shop, Koffi.

2. Santa at the Shipwreck Museum, Charlestown

Before you head down into the tunnel of lights (the UK’s longest indoor lit tunnel of Christmas lights, extending to more than 220 metres and using more than 4.5 miles of sparkling lights) book a meeting with Santa and his elves, where all children receive a very special festive keepsake to take home. Booking essential, and book to attend  before  your timeslot for the tunnel! £15/£10 per child depending on age, first adult free, Additional adult £4.50.

( Separate booking to the Tunnel of Lights! )

Santa will not be at Lanhydrock in 2023.

3. Santa at the Eden Project

Father Christmas is in a new, bigger log cabin just outside of the ice rink this year. It felt incredibly magical being inside – the decorations were just amazing. To be honest, the whole 40 minute experience was brilliant – especially Santa’s entrance down the chimney! It began with a show with the elves and Father Christmas which our boys both enjoyed.

The theme in 2023 is about giving and the importance of plants. I was also impressed that parts of the show were signed to make it more accessible. Afterwards we got to meet Father Christmas, make pledges to help power his sleigh and play games with the elves. The boys each got a gift from Santa too. You can find out more about meeting Father Christmas at Eden and book tickets here .

The most magical things to do in Cornwall at Christmas

By Zoe Cook

Cornwall at Christmas

There is something especially wonderful about Cornwall at Christmas – twinkling harbours, colourful lights reflected on the shimmering water, festive feasts with sea views, immaculately dressed hotels , cosy cocktail bars, and quirky Cornish Christmas traditions. As memories of the crazy-busy summer season fade away and the towns, villages and beaches have had a few months to recover before bursting back into technicolour for the holiday season. Here, we round up the best places to go, and the most enchanting things to do, for a very Cornish Christmas.

Ice skating at the Eden project

1. Ice skating at the Eden project

Each year, the Eden Project transforms into a mesmerising winter wonderland. Its glittering ice rink, spectacularly located in front of the iconic biomes, is a striking setting for a spot of skating. The festivities continue inside the biomes which dazzle with twinkling lights, fibre optics and lasers, accompanied by live orchestral music. There are 24 acres of elaborate gardens to explore on a crisp Christmas stroll – be sure to pick up a hot chocolate to keep you warm as you wander.

Address: The Eden Project, Bodelva, Par PL24 2SG Website: edenproject.com   Price: Adult ice skating from £8 per person

Christmas swim at Crooklets Beach Bude Cornwall

2. Festive wild swimming

Guaranteed to blow any Christmas cobwebs away, there is nothing quite like a freezing, festive dip in the sea – a veritable Cornish tradition from long before wild swimming or cold-water therapy were in fashion. From Christmas Eve to New Year’s Day, beaches across Cornwall see hardy locals running into the water, often wearing little more than swimwear and a Santa hat (wetsuits are cheating!). This year, to seriously elevate your experience, head to Baby Bay in Polzeath, where you can book your space in a gorgeous wood-fired sauna for the ultimate post-swim indulgence.

Address: Baby Bay, New Polzeath, Wadebridge PL27 6UX Website: latitude50.co.uk

Mousehole Christmas lights

3. Mousehole’s famous Christmas lights

With a history dating back to the 1960s, the Mousehole lights are a Cornish Christmas institution. What started as a handful of coloured bulbs strung along the quay has grown into a stunning display which attracts thousands of visitors to this beautiful little fishing harbour – one of the prettiest villages in Cornwall – each winter. Colourful lanterns hang above the harbourside, a giant illuminated serpent glimmers in the quay, cottages glow with decorations and the hillside sparkles with giant light displays. There is a real nostalgic charm to Mousehole’s joyful, colour-filled Christmas lights , and a timelessness in the shared delight of the crowds that gather to enjoy the chocolate-box scene – an unmissable Cornish Christmas spectacle.

Address: Mousehole Harbour Lights, Mousehole, Cornwall UK Website: mouseholelights.org.uk

Alverton Hotel

4. Afternoon tea at the Alverton Hotel, Truro

This charming hotel folded away in underrated Truro is cosy, romantic and inviting. A former convent, complete with slate roof, stone archways, climbing ivy and its own bell tower, it’s a walk away from everything Cornwall’s only city has to offer, including the beautiful Truro Cathedral, bejewelled with stunning stained-glass windows and flickering with candlelight at Christmastime. Its afternoon tea is delicious year-round and is extra special at Christmas when seasonal specials such as Parmesan mustard glazed pigs n’ blankets and ‘Snowball’ tarts grace the menu – the offerings are updated each year. After a morning’s Christmas shopping, there is nowhere better to hunker down and unwind with a steaming glass of mulled wine.

Best places to see Santa in Cornwall

Posted on 27 Nov 2017

We all know Santa is a busy man at this time of year with all that list making and checking but luckily for us, he’s still found time to come to Cornwall quite a few times in the run up to the big day. Here’s a round up of some of the best:

Eden Project – Father Christmas will be at Cornwall’s most popular attraction each day from 25 th November. You’ll be invited to see ‘behind the scenes’ as Santa and the Elves read children’s letters and get the stockings ready. Then there’s a story in front of the fire before meeting Father Christmas himself. Booking is essential.

Truro Reindeer Parade – Father Christmas comes to Truro accompanied by real reindeer on 29 th November. They start off in Victoria Square at 6pm followed by a parade through the city accompanied by Camborne Youth Band.

Tudor Christmas at Trerice – Trerice is an Elizabethan manor house not far from Newquay and they celebrate Christmas as it would have been 400 years ago. A special Tudor Father Christmas will be at the house at weekends from 2 nd December to 17 th December and he will be telling traditional tales from the past before giving each child a gift

Lappa Valley Santa Train – as a complete contrast, why not hop aboard the Santa Steam Train at Lappa Valley and travel to his magical Christmas grotto. There’s lots to do while you wait to meet Father Christmas including children’s entertainers, mince pies and mulled wine for the adults, Christmas card colouring and letter writing. Each child gets a present before it’s time to get back on board the train home. Booking is essential as the trains sold out last year.

If you’d rather dress up as Santa yourself rather than meet him, why not take part in the Cornwall Hospice Care Truro Santa Run on 3 rd December. You can run, jog or walk this 3km course through the city streets dressed in full Santa costume – you even get a beard – while raising money for charity

Bedruthan Steps’ Grotto – Just a stone’s throw from us here at The Park you’ll find Bedruthan Steps, which creates a special winter wonderland each Christmas. Expect Nordic helpers, elves, snow and of course Father Christmas himself. This is a real day out and well worth a visit.

A magical Christmas steam train journey through Cornwall will delight kids this holiday season

It's one of Cornwall's favourite festive days out

Bodmin & Wenford Railway

Santa is set to take children on a magical steam train journey through Cornwall this Christmas during one of the county's favourite festive days out. Tickets are available now for the main event at Bodmin and Wenford Railway.

Travelling by steam train, a very busy Father Christmas will be available to visit on selected dates throughout December in the lead up to December 25. Offering a unique steam train experience, families can travel with the elves to meet Santa in his grotto.

When you arrive at the station, you will be greeted by Santa’s elves before boarding the steam train to Bodmin Parkway. While aboard the train, children will have the chance to write their list to Santa before returning back to Bodmin General.

Once back at the main station, the kids can take part in some Christmas -themed activities before they go and visit Santa in his unique Victorian coach. They can also have a photo taken with Santa, if they're on the nice list of course.

Make sure you book your tickets soon as the event is known for its popularity and is expected to sell out. Alternatively, you can also enjoy Storytime with Santa or Private Santa Experiences. Here's what a reviewer had to say:

"Took my family to the Santa by Steam on Christmas Eve - a brilliant experience. My two grandsons especially the three-year-old thoroughly enjoyed himself, as did the adults. To be greeted with mince pies/buns/non-alcohol mulled wine and squash to start with, then the steam train ride to Bodmin Parkway and the visit to Santa on the train. The presents were brilliant. Well worth the money. So well organised - thankyou Bodmin and Wenford Railway. Well done."

Where's Santa in Cornwall 2023

Read on for more on santa's grottos, opportunities to meet santa and santa's workshops in cornwall in 2023....

visit santa cornwall

At this time of year Father Christmas becomes an incredibly busy man, but as he’s so friendly and thoughtful he will always find time to listen to your wish lists.

There’s nothing that Father Christmas loves more than talking and listening to children, so he uses his super magical powers to whizz all over the county and can be in many places often at the same time!

You’ll find him in cosy cabins, in sparkly grottos, on festive trains and on horse-drawn sleighs in town centres, shopping centres, garden centres and family attractions.

As he gets exceedingly hungry on his travels he even turns up for breakfast and lunch at some places!  So, along with his many helpers, do look out for Santa at the following locations this festive season…

PS. Don’t forget to leave out a treat or two for Santa and his reindeer on Christmas Eve. The cheeky elves have told us he likes smelly socks, but we think he would rather have a tasty mince pie!

Dogs are restricted on the designated beaches at the times listed below Cornwall Council enforces restrictions at the following beaches which are all part of a Public Spaces Protection Order. Other privately owned beaches may have their own local restrictions in force.

Please note: Blue Flag and Seaside Award beaches have longer restrictions due to the requirements of the Award status. In addition there are three protected wildlife areas that are subject to individual restrictions.

That all depends on what you are looking for? North Cornwall tends to be wilder, rugged cliffs, long sandy windswept beaches, a land of myth's and legends...

The south coast is gentler, historic fishing villages, small sheltered coves and green fields running down to the water's edge.

Whichever coast you choose, you will receive a warm welcome, and if you do get bored, it's never much more than an hour's drive from one side to the other.

Travel to Cornwall by car

It takes less than five hours to get from London or Birmingham to the heart of Cornwall by car.

Drive along the M4 motorway from London, or M6 from Manchester, and then the M5 to Exeter and finally either the A30, that is mostly dual carriageway, or the A38 passing Plymouth and Saltash into South East Cornwall.

Alternatively if you enter Cornwall from North Devon, there is the scenic A39 Atlantic Highway running through Bude, which you can join from Junction 27 on the M5.

Due to the high volume of traffic on Cornwall's roads during the summer months the main routes can become congested especially at weekends. Travelling overnight or outside peak rush hours is recommended to avoid long delays.

  • To plan your journey use the AA Route Planner for a tailor made travel plan with timings and mileage
  • For information on possible delays or roadwork's throughout the UK or in Cornwall visit Traffic Watch

There's a well-known saying that Devon is close to perfection, perfection being Cornwall!

You won't get a real Cornish pasty in Devon, and they don't know how to make a proper cream tea.....

What more do we need to say?

Yes, Truro is Cornwall's only city. It has a population of around 21,000 people and is famous for it's gothic architecture and paved streets. A pleasant place to spend the day shopping or visiting the Royal Cornwall Museum. In the evening there are plenty of bars and restaurants, a cinema and the Hall for Cornwall theatre.

You can always tell a holiday maker by the way they pronounce certain Cornish placenames... Tintagel, Launceston, Mevagissey, Mousehole.... but probably the most common mispronunciation is Fowey.

It rhymes with toy, not cow, so say Foy and you won't be far wrong!

The name comes from the old Cornish word for Beech Tree, and is taken from the name of the river rather than the town.

Cornwall has been consistently voted one of Britain’s top tourist destinations. As the official tourist board, it is Visit Cornwall’s mission to build on this success and seize every opportunity to continue to make Cornwall a quality destination of choice.
