Volga dream review, volga dream is the best choice for cruises in russia.

volga dream cruises owner

Having been on other first class cruises (river and otherwise), Volga Dream sets the standard in terms of service, luxury, accommodations, and excursions for a river cruise. Volga Dream advertises as the only 5 star river cruise in Russia. Based on my experience and speaking to guests on other cruise ships, their claim seems 100% true. My research before, during and after told me, Volga Dream is the best and only choice for River Cruises in Russia. This review is glowing and deservedly so.

Staff and Service

The Cruise Director, Yulia, is easily the single best employee I have seen in her type of position in all my years of travel. She was professional, approachable, organized, a dedicated leader among the crew and seemed to never sleep. She attended and managed every event. We joked that she must have two cabins, one just for her clothes. She had a themed outfit for every event. She was always smiling and managed each event with the precision of a Prussian General, but the grace of a Bolshoi performer. Alina, the front desk manager, responded to every request, INSTANTLY. Wake up calls, room service, laundry, general questions, or simply engaging in informal small talk, this young lady was exactly the person you wanted to talk to when an answer was needed. Priceless is the only word I can use to describe her. Our room (411) was the aft most cabin and nearest the engine area. This generated some ambient heat that was a bit uncomfortable on a warm day. When I asked for assistance, Olga, the Hotel Manager, arrived within minutes, sent an engineer, provided a fan, and followed up the next day with a bigger fan. She did not ignore our concern. Instead, she went "overboard" trying to make sure we were taken care of. This level of service was found everywhere on the ship.

Volga Dream Cabins

Other than the warm item mentioned above, the ship exceeded all expectations in terms of amenities. River cruise ships are notoriously small. Not these cabins. Other comments on small space, must be from people unfamiliar with the size of river cruise ship cabins. The Volga Dream website photos are spot on. The bathrooms are large by river cruise standards and the junior suite bathrooms are normal hotel room size… very impressive. We visited other rooms and all were comfortable, large, good AC, and clean. Housekeeping was around frequently and did everything you requested.

Ship Condition

Other than a very small and impractical gym, the ship is flawless. Because of the small gym, we were forced to get our exercise by walking the deck…beautiful. I was glad we were required to get our exercise in a gorgeous setting. The lounge, deck, restaurant, library and other features all exceeded expectations. Built in 1959 and remodeled in 2007, the ship exudes elegance, high class and modern safety. The bridge had all the latest navigation and safety features. Given the horror stories of Russian River cruises, we selected Volga Dream, in part, because they had a complete remodel and every GPS and navigation system imaginable. The crew kept everything in mint condition. We visited the bridge, engine room and were impressed with everything.

Food On Board

Gourmet food was served at every ship meal. The length of the dinners were a bit long for my tastes, but most people liked the time to socialize. We had dinner with the historian for the cruise on the last night and had a great time. It could have lasted even longer (haha at my own hypocrisy). Other than ice cream the chef made EVERYTHING on board. WOW is the best word I can find to describe the food. Every time Yulia announced “Bon A petit” on the speaker I felt like Pavlov’s dog, eager to go to the restaurant. Daimen, the maître de, made every meal wonderful with exquisite service. We even had a deckside BBQ rib lunch one day. This was great food and a nice change from the formal meals.

On Board Activity

My biggest fear was the long travel time between ports. My prior river cruise experiences were not good, and they claimed to be first class cruises. Volga Dream and Yulia (Cruise Director) were absolutely above First Class and amazing at making the onboard experiences valuable. The activities were high quality, well managed, properly timed and definitely worth the time. Usually, I prefer not to participate in on board activities, but on Volga Dream I was eager to see the next great activity Yulia had prepared for us.

Port Excursions

There was nothing special about these stops. They are the normal Moscow-SPB river stops, but I liked them. In speaking with others, it was obvious Volga Dream hired the best tour guides. We had much smaller groups (15 max) than the other ships and the guides were often teachers or professors. Only one negative. On one stop a guide took us to her friend’s store for shopping and we had an important venue cut short. The rest of her tour was very good. I told Yulia upon our return and she was eager to get details and was obviously interested in following up and address the problem. As usual, Yulia, was focused on our experience and eager to make everything perfect.

Disembarkation

Cruisers know the horror stories of disembarking. Not Volga Dream. Again, I stood on the deck and watched Yulia execute the process to perfection. Bags were collected, transportation arrived, groups called by number, bags identified, people loaded and off we went. Despite her hard work, Yulia walked onto every bus, smiled and wished the guests safe travels. Perfect to the end.

Tour Extensions

We spent extra days in Moscow and St. Petersburg. I will review the hotels and other venues separately. The Platinum arrangements (Ararat and Grand Europe) were wonderful. The excursions and tours guides were first class. Special admission to the Diamond Fund and early admit to the Winter Palace helped avoid crowds. The hydrofoil from Peterhof allowed extra time touring Peterhof. I usually hate tour group guides, but Volga Dream hired the best and I had a great time. The excursion meals were a mixed bag. They were a fixed menu, without consideration of preference. I liked most of the excursion meals, but they were not as good as the ship meals. They should offer some choices for excursion food. The only bad stop was Turandot in Moscow. We are in a side room and never got to see the beauty of the main restaurant we were all hoping to see and experience. In contrast, in SPB we had lunch in the roof top restaurant of the Taleon Imperial Hotel, Victoria, which was outstanding.

At first and last I can tell you, guys, - be careful to travel on rivers here! Especially in tourist season. A ship * or ***** does not mean you are safe. Check everything 100 times before to go. Yes, I know that I do not make good reputation to Russian service there, but life is life and I have a bad habit - I want people to stay alive.

Look here http://lenta.ru/news/2011/07/10/sunk1/ (in Russian, but google-translator will help) and here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCPcpxuPrHU

This is not first and last time of it.

The boat itself is old - built in thew '50s - but refurbished in 2007. They purport to be the most luxurious boat on the river cruise route. The cabins were fine, but smaller than the typical Danube cruise boat, if you've ever been on one of those. The double bed (two singles put together) left about 18" around the bed on each side and maybe 2' at the foot of the bed, between the closet and the bed. The heads (bathrooms) were larger than those found on the Danube cruise boat and very nicely fitted out,. The Volga Dream seemed smaller than most of the other river boats were saw - which all seemed to be stamped out of the same cookie cutter. The boat was comfortable. We had only one night on Lake Onega with some rockin' & rollin' due to the weather.

The ship's cabins have no radio alarm clock - so you'll need your own clock. TV and radio service is available with a couple of English speaking channels available, none of which I found particularly useful. News, real news, was hard to come by.

The crew was delightful. All those in contact with the passengers could speak English - ranging from passably to fluently. The boat obviously caters to an English-speaking clientele (probably an American clientele).

The food was pretty good - I ate too much. Not quite good French cooking - but pretty good considering the small galley and the large crowd served. The dinners struck me as a bit too heavy - lamb, pork, etc. Would have enjoyed a bit lighter fare or some Italian or french dishes. Breakfast and lunch were buffet style; dinner, full service. Gratis wine was available with each lunch and dinner. The waitresses were attentive and responsive. Ours was a delight - a very pleasant gal.

The ship, in addition to the dining room, has a nice lounge with a bar (prices are what you'd pay in a hotel bar in an upscale hotel). The is also a small ship's library aft, which is (usually) a comfy and quiet place to sit and read - something you can not do in your cabin - there are no chairs there (unless you have a suite).

If internet access is REALLY important to you, buy a Blackberry. The ship has WiFi available - at a cost and not cheap - but I was told it wouldn't work for my iPod Touch - nor for iPads. There are two computers available in the ships library, which are supposed to be able to access the internet - but access was really spotty. And, even with access available when docked in large towns, it was excruciatingly slow - wanted to take a hammer to the machine while it sat there and just spun.

Tours ashore were arranged by Gohagan and were very good. The tour guides Gohgan arranged were excellent. Don't know how you'd fare when the cruise was not put together by Gohgan. The places visited were the standard ports of call for most of the cruise boats plying this route. All interesting. As an aside - if you're looking for Russian souvenirs, the place to buy them is the boat's stop at Mandrogi Island - a place set up for craftsmen to display their wares. The quality and range of items sold seemed to be first rate and the prices very good.

All-in-all - a very nice experience and one I would recommend to anyone.

We had a double cabin on Promenade Deck 3 which we would recommend. Not huge cabin space, but with two picture windows and a perfectly adequate shower/toilet (the shower gushed with immediate hot water).

The guest lounge was very comfortably furnished with easy chairs and sofas, sufficiently large to accommodate all the guests when needed, something not always so in other riverboats that we have been on.

The tours at the places visited en route were well organised and hugely informative.

Grumbles/complaints? The only one that we heard was about the poor internet connection available (or not!). This was of no personal concern to my wife or me. For our part, we are pleased that we chose the Volga Dream - it truly lived up to our expectations. The PR is most probably spot on, and we would surely select this boat again if we fancy another Volga trip.

Crew were pleasant, ship well cared for, cabins clean, meals excellent (considering the size of the kitchen), on shore excursions were well coordinated and executed. The onboard Russian workshops were educational and fun.

Our experience onboard the Volga Dream was truly memorable and a nice way to spend six days in Russia.

Sounds like a great ship. AM.

My first cruse and it surpassed all expectations for a frequent traveller to Russia [and Eastern Europe]..

The ship was excellent and the crew--all of them, especially Zelko, the calm and collected Maitre D'--were fantastic.

The food, the assorted extras and excursions were all superb.

I am not easily pleased but I would highly recommend Volga Dream cruises to curious and discerning travellers.

Yet, Russia had always been a place we wanted to visit. We arrived in Russia with great expectations, and I am pleased to say that our vacation experiences far exceeded these expectations. Russia itself, from the big cities, to the small towns, to the countryside, is a magnificent land, rich in history and culture. What made it better for us, was the way the the Volga Dream team organized our entire trip, including arranging for extra tours for us in St Petersburg and Moscow..

We tremendously enjoyed the guided tours, led by English speaking guides who were all very knowledgeable and who generally had warm and welcoming personalities that were clearly authentic.

On board the Volga Dream , we were treated to levels of service that truly earn this vessel a 5-star rating. Our cabins were very comfortable, especially the Deluxe Junior Suite that my wife and I occupied. Our children were also very comfortable in the Deluxe Staterooms. The food on-board was spectacular, and we always had options that would suit our various tastes. The activities on the boat, while not as diverse and grand as those you would find on a large cruise ship, were more than adequate to keep everyone occupied and interested.

All in all, my entire family agreed that this was the best vacation we have had together. I believe that everyone should visit Russia at least once in their lifetimes, and when they do, the best, the only, way to get the most out of the trip is to take a journey on the Volga Dream . I would recommend it for just about everyone, except perhaps for families with small children who may not truly appreciate the magnificence of Russia, and for whom the on-board activities may be too limited.

One negative, which others have commented on before, is the erratic nature of the Internet service on board the vessel. Another, which has nothing to do with the Volga Dream , is the mercenary tactics of Russian taxi drivers. Treat them with caution.

Accommodation

Accommodation aboard the Volga Dream ranges from standard cabins to the 260 square feet of luxurious Owner’s Suite situated at the front of the promenade deck. However, regardless of which you choose, you will receive the same amenities and service, as the grades differ in terms of size and view rather than the facilities inside.

Therefore, everyone will receive air-condition, a private en-suite, satellite TV, a minibar, bathrobes and a welcome fruit basket. The Owner’s Suite is the only accommodation option with a balcony attached, but the others do feature large picture windows or porthole.

The restaurant seats all guests in one sitting and there are free flowing wines, beers and soft drinks during each meal. Breakfast and lunch will offer buffet options, whilst dinner will be a grand affair consisting of four or five courses from an a la carte menu. Specific dishes will represent Russian and international cuisine. There is also the option to enjoy a traditional afternoon tea in the lounge every day.

The public areas on board include a restaurant, two lounge areas, a boutique and a fitness centre. There are also outdoor areas to sit on every deck, afforded by the fact that the staterooms and cabins do not have balconies. This creates a wide promenade area where you can pull up a chair and watch the world go by.

There will be plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in the imperial history of Russia as you sail to places such as Uglich and Yaroslavl. As well as city tours there will be vodka and caviar tastings and visits to historic buildings.

The experiences don’t stop there, though. In order for you to experience Russian culture even further, a number of traditional onboard activities are offered. From piano recitals to language lessons and costumed dinners, there is always something to enhance your trip.
