Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds

Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds

Based on HG Wells’ dark Victorian tale, the production remains a favourite to millions around the world, exciting audiences of all ages.

In 2006, TWOTW was already considered a cutting-edge production with six trucks filled to the brim. By 2022, which marks 16 years of live touring, the production will be up to 12 trucks, with a host of ingredients and special effects to challenge and excite the senses.

In addition to a stellar cast (still to be announced), audiences can expect to see Liam Neeson in 3D holography as journalist George Herbert and the 35-foot-tall Martian Fighting Machine firing real flame Heat Rays, along with the nine-piece Black Smoke Band and ULLAdubULLA symphonic string orchestra.

Some of the new updates and additions include a giant arched bridge running from the lip of the stage out over the audience to the front of house desk, three panoramic screens with two hours of cutting-edge CGI and the incineration of a cast member in full view of the audience.

There will also be surround sound, lighting, pyrotechnics and otherworldly special effects – plus a ground-breaking levitation effect, the release of deadly black smoke from the Martian Fighting Machine and  The War Of The Worlds’  author himself, HG Wells, appearing in sight and sound.

LISTEN, CAN YOU HEAR THEM DRAWING NEAR?

Jeff Wayne and The War of The Worlds team are thrilled to unveil the grand return of our iconic arena production! Brace yourselves as our 35-foot Fighting Machine with its flame-firing Heat Ray conquers stages across the UK and Ireland in March and April 2025.

Our first two cast members have been announced! For the first time in Martian history, a real-life couple will be performing as the married couple: Max George as Parson Nathaniel and Maisie Smith as Beth , his wife. Jeff said: “Being a couple in real life will add to their on-stage charisma and chemistry. Maisie has such a melodic but powerful voice, which compliments Max’s dramatic and soulful vocals wonderfully."

Jeff Wayne will be back on his podium conducting the 8-piece Black Smoke Band and 36-piece ULLAdubULLA Strings. Liam Neeson returns in 3D Holography as The Journalist, and the final all-star cast will be announced soon!

One of the most trailblazing tours of all time, Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of ‘The War of The Worlds’ - Alive on Stage! returns to arenas throughout the UK in 2022.

Featuring a stellar cast with Strictly Come Dancing and Stage star Kevin Clifton as The Artilleryman, Blue’s Duncan James as Parson Nathaniel, Steps’ and stage star Claire Richards as Beth, The Parson’s Wife, and returning are Inglorious’ front man Nathan James as The Voice of Humanity,  and Anna-Marie Wayne as Carrie, The Journalist’s Fiancée, PLUS The Moody Blues’ Justin Hayward reprising his original role as The Sung Thoughts of The Journalist. Liam Neeson retains his role in 3D holography as The Journalist while Jeff Wayne again conducts the 8-piece Black Smoke Band and symphonic ULLAdubULLA Strings.   QUOTES FROM CAST AND JEFF WAYNE Claire Richards said: "I am so thrilled to be joining the cast of Jeff Wayne’s The War of The Worlds for their 2022 Arena tour. To be a part of such an iconic production is so exciting, and I'm really looking forward to getting back out on the road next year.”   Kevin Clifton said:  “I am unbelievably excited to be joining the cast of Jeff Wayne’s The War of The Worlds. In 2022 this particular story could not be more relevant. After so long without live performance, what better experience could there be than this spectacular arena production complete with a full live onstage orchestra and special effects. 'Life Begins Again!’ "   Duncan James said:   “I have always been a fan of Jeff Wayne and to get to work with such a legend is a dream come true, and I am thrilled to work alongside an incredible cast. I honestly cannot wait to be back on the road and performing again.” Justin Hayward said: “I’m very happy to be back as part of The War of the World’s family, this time with Jeff’s production ‘The Life Begins Again Tour’, coming to arenas through March and April, 2022. Wherever I go in the world, ‘Forever Autumn’, along with ‘Nights in White Satin', is one of the songs that people know and love, and as a singer it’s a joy to perform. This production is sure to be spectacular, and the music as wonderful as ever.  I’m looking forward to it all very much”   Nathan James said: “I am so excited to be back touring with Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of The Worlds as The Voice of Humanity. I had so much fun on the last tour and it's a real honour to know Jeff enjoyed my version of "Thunder Child '' enough to bring me back again! Last time I couldn't believe my luck and this time is no different. 43 years on and this double album still remains way ahead of its time and is still bringing so much joy. I can’t wait to perform this wonderful album again, to feel the heat of the Pyrotechnics on my epic leather coat and to be back in these incredible venues.”   Anna-Marie Wayne said: "I am so excited to be returning as Carrie, The Journalist’s Fiancée in the 2022 arena tour of Jeff Wayne's The War of The Worlds. It’s been a long road to get back to this point of opening up live entertainment but life truly does “Begin Again!”   Based on HG Wells’ dark Victorian tale, The War of The Worlds remains a firm favourite to millions around the world.     In 2006, TWOTW tour was considered a cutting-edge production with 6 trucks filled to the brim. In 2022, marking a momentous 16 years of touring, the production will be up to 12 including a host of new ingredients and special effects that will challenge and excite the senses for audiences of all ages, all set to Jeff’s iconic score.   FEATURING:   * The iconic 3-tonne, 30 foot-tall Martian Fighting Machine firing real-flame Heat Rays at the audience. * The 8-piece Black Smoke Band and the symphonic ULLAdubULLA Strings.  * Leaf drops  * Mixed live in Surround Sound. * Giant bridge from the lip of the stage out and over the audience. * Three panoramic screens featuring over 2-hours of cutting-edge CGI & Video * The incineration of a Cast member. * In Sight and Sound - Callum O’Neil as ‘The War of The Worlds’ author, HG Wells. * The levitation of Beth, Parson Nathaniel’s wife.       PLUS NEW FOR 2022: * The Flaming Man * Other-worldly special effects!   Jeff Wayne said: "Like so many artists whose tours are starting up once again, I’m very privileged to be amongst them, returning with my Musical Version of The War of The Worlds - Alive on Stage.   We’ve called this tour The Life Begins Again Tour, a name for the times, but coincidentally, it comes from a theme with the same name first heard in my original 1978 double-album, after the Martians succumbed to one particular minuscule thing - Human bacteria that caused the Common Cold.   And in a sneeze, they were gone!     From that moment, people from all over Britain, Mankind began returning to their homes and loved ones -  life WAS beginning again.   Let's hope that like HG's Martians, this horrible disease will be permanently defeated, and life will not just begin again, but stay forevermore.   For me, conducting world class artists and musicians surrounded by some of the most exciting technology imaginable, is always pure magic.   And welcome the great talents of Claire Richards, Duncan James, Kevin Clifton, along with returning members, Anna-Marie Wayne and Nathan James plus my friend and the original Sung Thoughts of The Journalist – The Moody Blues’ Justin Hayward.   I hope you'll join me and all those who make up The Life Begins Again Tour, as we visit UK arenas in March and April 2022.” JEFF WAYNE’S MUSICAL VERSION OF ’THE WAR OF THE WORLDS’ - A SUMMARY   Jeff Wayne's double album was originally released by CBS Records in 1978 featuring Richard Burton, The Moody Blues’ Justin Hayward, David Essex, Chris Thompson and Julie Covington. It has enjoyed huge success and critical acclaim reaching the Top 10 in 22 countries and Number 1 in 11 of them along with two international hit singles ‘The Eve of The War’ and ‘Forever Autumn’, selling over 16 million records and spending over 330 weeks in the UK Album Charts to date.   In 2012, the New Generation double album was released featuring a new cast including: Liam Neeson, Take That’s Gary Barlow, Joss Stone. Maverick Sabre, Alex Claire and Kaiser Chiefs' Ricky Wilson.   Jeff’s Musical Version has won many awards including two UK Ivor Novellos, the US Best Recording in Science Fiction and Fantasy (the judges included Alfred Hitchcock, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg), as well as winning for Jeff, Classic Rock's 'Showman of The Year’ Award following the debut arena tour in 2006.   Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of ‘The War of The Worlds’ has grown into a true classic, acquiring new generations of devoted followers since its original release.  In 2016 it was seen at London’s Dominion Theatre for an extended Season, a chart-topping 5-hour Audible Audiobook featuring Michael Sheen, Taron Egerton and Theo James.    The 2006 DVD topped the UK Music DVD Charts for 7 consecutive weeks and was seen for a year on Sky Arts TV, with the 2012 DVD also enjoying great success.   In 2019, Jeff Wayne’s The War of The Worlds: The Immersive Experience opened at London’s Old Metal Exchange, winning the THEA - the ‘Oscar’ of the interactive world and 2021’s prestigious Travellers Choice TripAdvisor Award.

Stage and screen star Jason Donovan returns to the role of Parson Nathaniel, with Carrie Hope Fletcher playing his wife, Beth. Adam Garcia will debut as The Arilleryman, British singer-songwriter Newton Faulkner will perform The Sung Thoughts of The Journalist. Nathan James will play The Voice of Humanity, with Annie-Marie Wayne returning as Carrie, The Journalist’s Fiancee.

“I am delighted to be re-joining the cast for this very special 40th Anniversary Tour,” Jason Donovan announces. “The War of The Worlds has such enduring appeal and its fan base seems to grow and grow. With each tour, the scale, the drama and the special effects get more and more exciting, so I can’t wait to see what Jeff has planned for this spectacular celebration!”

This year, the production is set to break the fourth wall, with a huge arched bridges running through the centre of the arena. This brings the action closer to the audience for a more immersive experience.

It will once again feature the iconic three tonne, 35-foot tall Martian Fighting Machine with real flame Heat Rays. Fans can also expect a 100 foot wide Animation Wall, groundbreaking levitation effects, and many more surprises.

“In June 1978 when my original double album was released. I had no idea if it would vanish as quickly as one can say… ‘ULLAdubULLA!’,” says Jeff Wayne.

“But here we are today, celebrating its 40th Anniversary and seeing the newly re-mastered original double album sitting on top of the UK vinyl album charts.”

“And later this year I believe we’ll be performing the most exciting arena tour to date, with a most exciting cast, all of us getting ready to do battle with the Martians later this year.”

“No one would have believed…”

Jeff Wayne’s double album was originally release in 1978. It has enjoyed huge success and critical acclaim across the globe, with over 15 million records sold and spending over 330 weeks in the UK album charts (to date), plus achieving two International hit singles Forever Autumn and The Eve of The War. It has been Top 10 in 22 countries and No.1 in 11 of them.

“Yahoo!” yelled Jason, our safari guide from Manchester.

The sound echoed back to us. We had climbed onto a precipice overlooking a deep gorge in the mountains. We weren’t on safari in Africa, though — we were in Crete, the largest island in Greece.

Jason and two other guides had picked up our group of 11 (including our resident tour director, Kapi) at Daios Cove , the luxe resort on a secluded bay where we were staying, and after just a few minutes, we were driving on rocky unpaved roads up into the mountains. Now and then, we would stop on the side of the road, and Jason would grab some wild sage or thyme and give it to us to smell.

Laura Itzkowitz/Travel + Leisure

It’s especially fitting that we were doing a safari on Crete because that’s how Abercrombie & Kent originated: Geoffrey Kent was born on safari, raised on a farm in Kenya, and founded Abercrombie & Kent with his parents in 1962.

Over the years, A&K grew from a pioneering safari operator into one of the world’s leading travel companies that brings people worldwide. I was lucky enough to embark on a whirlwind tour of India with A&K a few years ago and was impressed by how seamless the trip was as well as the quality of the knowledgeable guides, so when I got the chance to join them for a tour of Rome and Crete via private jet, I didn’t hesitate to accept.

But back to Crete. As we rode up into the mountains, passing through little villages, we peppered Jason with questions, and he overloaded us with information about the island, its history, landscape, wildlife, and inhabitants, who identify as Cretan first and Greek second. He told us how Hitler sent his stormtroopers to capture the island in 1943 but was met with fierce resistance from pitchfork-wielding farmers who refused to back down. He showed us the bomb bells on the churches that Cretans made after the war using the tops of undetonated bombs since the Nazis had melted down many of the island’s church bells to make bullets. Fascinating didn't even begin to describe it.

We had arrived in Crete the day prior and went straight from the airport to Lyrarakis Winery , where we learned how the owners revived nearly extinct varietals and tasted four of their wines with lunch. We then visited the ancient Knossos Palace — home of King Minos and the Minotaur — with a wonderful guide named Marinella, who explained how the ancient Greeks had plumbing and flush toilets at the palace. We gawked at the reconstructed frescoes depicting men, women, and animals.

The trip had started in Rome, where an incredibly knowledgeable guide named Eva — who also had a wonderfully dry sense of humor — brought us to the off-limits Church of San Lorenzo in Miranda. Inside the nave, we watched as she and the church’s guardian unbolted and opened a heavy wooden door, revealing breathtaking views of the Roman Forum just below. In the basement, we saw centuries-old pharmacists’ tools and canisters that once held natural remedies. Eva then brought us down into the Forum, led us along a less-trod path to the Curia Iulia (the ancient senate house), and brought us right to the base of Trajan’s Column, regaling us with tales along the way.

The following day, Eva met us bright and early for a tour of Castel Sant’Angelo , known as the pope’s fortress. Originally built as the emperor Hadrian’s tomb, it became a fortress in the 6th century and was the hiding place for Pope Clement VII when Rome was sacked in 1527. Nowadays, you can see models of what it looked like in its previous iterations and climb up to the rooftop terrace for panoramic views of Rome.

After that, we were off to Trastevere — one of Rome’s most charming neighborhoods — for a food tour with Toni and Walter, our guides from Eating Europe . We stopped at la Norcineria di Iacozzilli , where they explained the difference between Parmigiano Reggiano and pecorino romano and gave us a taste of porchetta , the slow-roasted pork that’s a specialty of the hill towns outside of Rome. From there, they led us across the Tiber to Campo de’ Fiori, Rome’s most famous open-air market, where we watched a vendor clean artichokes and got a taste of mozzarella di bufala with fresh tomatoes. Finally, we walked around the corner to a restaurant for a pasta-making class. After eating our homemade ravioli filled with lemon-scented ricotta and tagliatelle all’amatriciana , we walked a few more blocks to the Gelateria Alberto Pica for a sweet end to the tour.

Our next activity brought us to one of Rome’s most incredible hidden gems. A&K had arranged for us to have private access to the Villa Farnesina , a Renaissance villa with frescoes by Raphael. As we stood outside the villa, Eva explained that it should have been called Villa Chigi because the man who commissioned it was the wealthy banker Agostino Chigi, who made a fortune lending money to the popes. On the occasion of his wedding, he commissioned Raphael to paint frescoes depicting the marriage of Cupid and Psyche. I had been there before, but every time I visit, I can’t help but stare up in awe at the figures, knowing that Raphael was in his late twenties when he created this masterpiece.

Dinner that evening was at another one of Rome’s most beautiful places: Le Jardin de Russie restaurant at the Hotel de Russie , which T+L readers consistently rank among the best hotels in the world in our annual World’s Best Awards survey. Our group had a private table in the secret garden, originally designed by Giuseppe Valadier and recently refreshed. It was the perfect setting to enjoy fresh burrata with tomatoes, risotto with pesto trapanese , and sea bream with artichokes served by the hotel’s charming staff. Walking back to the Hotel de la Ville , de Russie’s sister hotel also run by Rocco Forte, we made a little detour to Via Margutta to see where famed filmmaker Federico Fellini lived and the building where some scenes of "Roman Holiday" were filmed.

The next morning, we were whisked off to the executive terminal at Ciampino Airport to board the private jet to Crete. After a brief wait, we put our things through the X-ray scanner, walked through a metal detector, and were bused onto the tarmac to board the jet, which welcomed us onboard with Champagne and snacks. The whole experience couldn’t have been smoother.
