WeTravel offers travel booking software to help all kinds of businesses in the travel industry grow. The software has been designed to make it easier for customers to book travel experiences, while also making it more manageable for businesses to handle their bookings and trips.

One of the best aspects of using WeTravel is that there is also a free version of the software available. Travel businesses can access all of the core features of WeTravel to start accepting online bookings and payments easily, without spending a cent. For additional functionality, there are also paid plans .

In this guide, we’ll explore exactly what WeTravel offers and what kind of features you can get from our travel booking software.

Spreadsheet: Travel industry's booking and payment gateways compared

Why Use WeTravel?

WeTravel has been designed around offering a seamless customer experience specifically for travel companies. Our online payment solution puts any travel operator’s brand front and center, creating a more professional and recognizable user experience.

Not only is it simple to use, but our travel booking software also offers many key areas of functionality. This includes options for part payments and deposits, upselling, adding extras, incorporating discount codes, and loads more.

Travelers' experiences start when they make their bookings, so you should aim to make this experience as positive as possible. By providing a seamless booking and payment experience on your website, you’ll be able to improve the customer journey and make it easier for people to book your trips.

Ultimately, this will result in more revenue for your travel business .

WeTravel’s online booking system is also incredibly easy to use and set up. You simply create your booking page and use this to accept bookings and payments. No coding or technical knowledge is required, which means that any travel business can optimize its booking process with ease. And because there is a free option available, there’s no reason not to give WeTravel a try.

10 Free Features Available On WeTravel’s Travel Booking Software

Here is a breakdown of some of the main free features you can get from WeTravel.

1. Payment Collection

First and foremost, WeTravel offers a seamless payment collection platform for travel businesses. This makes it easy to set up and start accepting payments through your website.

travel booking software

The free WeTravel payment solution includes beautiful hosted booking pages. This is where you drive your traffic to place a booking and make their payment. The free travel booking software also includes an embedded checkout widget that you can add to your website. This is essential for streamlining the customer journey.

WeTravel is not only designed for accepting payments, but it also exists to make your bookings easier to manage. This is why the software includes an integrated calendar widget. Visitors to your site can easily choose a date and make a booking. This is reflected on your own calendar, which simplifies your time management.

Some other of WeTravel’s free payment features to note include:

  • The option for payment plans and automatic payment reminders
  • The option to offer ACH and card payments
  • The ability to pass over CC fees
  • Online and offline bookings

Of course, this entire booking and payment collection experience is mobile optimized.

About The Booking Pages

As mentioned above, when a business uses WeTravel, they have two options as to how they can incorporate the travel booking software into their site. This includes trip pages and embedded checkout options.

Trip pages are hosted on the WeTravel platform. These are fully-customizable booking pages that offer all of the information a client will need to know about a certain offering. WeTravel works by embedding these pages into a website via a “Book Now” button or widget. Setting these pages up is easy.

travel booking software

When a user navigates to the trip page, they can read all about the trip and make their booking on that page. This is an excellent strategy for tour operators that offer various trip packages because each trip and itinerary can be customized and updated on the page.

The other option is to use an embedded checkout feature. This is when you embed a checkout popup onto your travel website. You can easily set up all of the details for the specific trip or package on the WeTravel dashboard, and then integrate this checkout popup onto your website. Again, no coding or technical knowledge is required.

Embedded checkouts are an excellent solution for selling travel experiences without asking the user to leave your site.

2. Trip Website Builder

One of the most exciting things about WeTravel’s travel booking software is the addition of the travel website builder. This is what lets you put together and display all of your trips and itineraries that customers can book.

The tool includes a daily itinerary builder, that allows you to break down your trips and display their details. This means that you can create custom itineraries for your website, which you can sell through the above-mentioned payment collection software.

WeTravel users can create a customizable booking form and payment page where they direct traffic. This payment page can include your branding, and it can be easily set up to match your specific requirements.

travel booking software

Some other tools and functions included in the WeTravel trip website builder are:

  • A package availability counter to encourage visitors to book and ensure you never have overbookings
  • Waitlists to make it easier to manage customer expectations
  • Discount codes so that you can run promotions
  • A custom registration form builder. This lets you add any specific registration details that you need to capture
  • Add-on options if you need additional functionality

3. Trip Management

Once clients have discovered and booked your tours, the next step is to manage their travel experience.

Luckily, WeTravel includes a booking management system that extends beyond bookings and into managing trips. This is unique for travel booking software.

Everything is monitored through a central trip management dashboard. On the dashboard, travel businesses can see all of their financial and booking activity. This includes:

  • Discount codes
  • Custom prices
  • Balance-due reminders
  • Payment plans

When your business receives payment through WeTravel’s booking system, travel businesses can control the transfer of the money from here. You can easily transfer payments from your WeTravel account to your bank account or a supplier.

Travel operators can communicate with their clients directly from this dashboard. For example, you could send out an upcoming trip reminder and control it from the dashboard. This dashboard includes an unlimited number of team members and seats in the free plan.

The trip management feature incorporates automated client emails to keep clients up to date with their bookings. There is a booking search function to easily access the information you need, and a booking and client information editor.

wer travel

The dashboard also includes exportable payments and registration reports, as well as view-only admin functionality. Overall, this element of our travel booking software makes a major difference in managing your clients and travel experiences.

4. Finances And Payments

Of course, the whole point of having travel booking software is to ensure you get paid. WeTravel’s free platform connects your own Stripe account to make collecting and processing payments easy.

WeTravel accepts a wide variety of different payment methods, which is important for pleasing today's travelers. The specific payment methods available will vary depending on the currency being used.

If you do opt for one of WeTravel’s paid plans, then you can use WeTravel payment processing, WeTravel credit card, Supplier transfers, international wires, and more.

5. Multiple Currencies

WeTravel allows users to make and accept payments in multiple currencies. This is important for any travel business, as you will likely have clients using your platform all around the globe.

Multi-currency payment options make the payment experience easier for the customer. It streamlines the booking process and improves the user experience.

We only keep funds in USD, GBP, EUR, CAD, and AUD. Payments in currencies other than the previously mentioned are automatically converted into USD at the daily exchange rate.

6. WeTravel Account

WeTravel’s free travel booking software includes a branded WeTravel account. Users can customize their own Ts and Cs to ensure it matches their business. You can also review the booking widget for your website to ensure it looks the part.

wer travel

Paid plans include more advanced features, like company branding on trips and email communications, travel insurance affiliate links, and single sign-on. However, the free plan provides everything you need to safely and efficiently accept and manage bookings through your WeTravel account.

7. Support

With all of this functionality comes the need for support. With WeTravel’s booking management system, you get readily available to support if you ever run into any issues. This includes data privacy enforcement to keep your business running smoothly and safely.

8. Security

Security is an essential part of offering a payment gateway. Clients have to trust that they are dealing with a secure website and booking platform before they make a transaction.

Needless to say, WeTravel operates with the highest security standards. Our travel booking software does not store any of our user's financial or sensitive data. Any data that users input, such as their credit card details, is immediately transmitted to payment providers using bank-grade encryption.

9. Easy Integrations

Some payment gateways do not integrate with travel operators’ existing booking processes. Many travel booking solutions require a complex technical approach to do this. This is why so many travel operators don’t bother with integrating a payment gateway into their websites.

WeTravel has been designed with flexible integration options. This makes it effortless for any travel business to incorporate the software into their booking process.

Our travel booking software is certainly one of the most extensive platforms available to businesses. It’s essential that businesses understand the power of free tools, and what kind of software solutions exist on the market. This is especially important for small businesses starting out.

A platform like WeTravel has the potential to help a company run smoothly and make your life as a travel business owner, or tour operator a lot easier. Free tools such as this are also a great way to test out the software before you invest in it.

In 2024, The MICHELIN Guide is announcing the first ever MICHELIN Keys – a brand new distinction that recognises the most outstanding hotels across the world. Head here for everything you need to know about the new Key distinction, and visit this page to explore the full list of Key hotels in France.

Three Keys is the highest hotel honour in The MICHELIN Guide. Being awarded One Key (127 properties) or Two Keys (38 properties) is difficult enough, but only 24 hotels have earned the Three Key distinction in France. Out of those, nine can be found in Paris. The Three Key hotels excel in all five criteria used to judge hotels by our Inspectors. Here, we thought it fitting to focus on just one of those criteria – the most photogenic of the five – architecture and interior design. Below, take a look at the interiors and exteriors of each of our nine Three Key hotels in Paris.

Flying cars are coming! Here's how they could change the way you travel.

If you'd told me a few weeks ago that flying cars will change the way we travel, I probably would have laughed at you.

But when Elon Musk hinted there might be a flying Tesla soon, the internet started buzzing with flying car news. And now people are talking.

“There's absolutely a sense that the time has come,” said aviation industry investment banker Joey Smith at Cassel Salpeter & Co . "Numerous well-funded companies are racing to build a viable production vehicle, and they could take to the skies as early as next year."

Check out   Elliott Confidential , the newsletter the travel industry doesn't want you to read. Each issue is filled with breaking news, deep insights, and exclusive strategies for becoming a better traveler. But don't tell anyone!

What's more, attitudes toward Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) – that's a fancy term for flying cars and other personal flying vehicles – have shifted. A new study suggests Americans, and particularly younger urban consumers, are warming to the idea of flying to their next destination. Even so, the definition of a flying car is a little hard to pin down. I'll explain in a minute.

Don't expect to open your apartment window and see a scene out of a sci-fi movie like "Minority Report" anytime soon. (You know, lanes of flying vehicles lining the sky.) It'll be a slow rollout, but it has the potential to change the way we travel like we haven't seen since the introduction of the jet engine.

'Flying feels different': Here's how air travel has changed recently

Air travel smells worse than ever. Here's how to fix it.

What kind of flying vehicles are out there?

Personal flying vehicles defy simple classification, which may be part of their allure. There are STOLs and VTOLs, quadcopters, octocopters and hexacopters. Some are electric, some are gas-powered.

Don't be confused by all the acronyms. I think it's OK to just call them flying cars.

Right now, the ones generating the most noise are electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles (eVTOLs). These aircraft take off and land like a helicopter. For example, Joby's air taxi service in Manhattan plans to use its eVTOL , which looks like an oversized drone, to shuttle passengers from New York to JFK Airport next year.

My categorization is a little unconventional, but here's how I see it: There are really just two types of flying cars. The first are cars that can drive on the road and fly, just like the ones in "Back to the Future."

One of the most high-profile of these is the Model A being developed by Alef Aeronautics . It's an eVTOL that looks like a sports car. But once it takes off, the passenger cabin pivots and the vehicle flies sideways, which looks a little jarring but very cool.

The second type of flying vehicle doesn't even bother with the road. For example, the Lilium Jet is both a fixed-wing aircraft and an eVTOL. But you won't see it on the highway unless it's making an emergency landing – so technically, it's not a flying car.

Like I said, these flying vehicles aren't easy to categorize. And it hasn't really mattered until now because you could only find them in aviation magazines and science fiction movies. But now there are serious discussions about flying cars, and developers have started taking orders. The future is almost here.

Flying cars aren't cleared for takeoff – yet

Don't get too excited. A few things still have to be worked out, say experts. For example, eVTOL manufacturers have struggled with several challenges. It's not just how to design lightweight aircraft made from the right composite materials and with adequate battery life. It's also piloting the flying car. Issues such as autonomous flight capability and pilot training have proven to be big barriers.

There are also regulatory roadblocks. The Federal Aviation Administration, which has oversight of these new vehicles, has adopted a "crawl-walk-run" approach. And it's still in "crawl" mode. Last year, it laid down some rules for flying cars. Among them: They have to use existing heliports and they must have a human pilot. But there are no special traffic lanes in the sky for these vehicles yet.

The UK is also preparing for flying cars. In March, the government said it envisioned eVTOLs taking to the skies within four years .

Observers are skeptical of the proposed timeline. Charles Leocha, president of the consumer group Travelers United , has worked on regulations for low-level unmanned aerial vehicles for the last decade. He said the wheels are turning slowly.

“The FAA is at least a decade away from allowing or approving any kind of flying car," he added.

All of that has made people reluctant to order a flying car – if they can afford one. Most vehicles can range from $150,000 to as much as $10 million.

"Prospective buyers are likely to hold off until regulatory barriers are dismantled," said Francesco Cerroni, a mobility expert at the design firm Buro Happold .

Pay less to fly: New strategies for finding cheap airfares now

Air travel may be about to get better. Here's what it means for your next flight.

Where to find personal flying vehicles now

If you want to see a flying vehicle for yourself, here's where to find them (outside of the movie theater):

  • Lift Aircraft , which manufactures a single-seat eVTOL called Hexa, is offering test flights on its single-seat Hexas this spring. It's scheduled to be in Lakeland Linder International Airport in Florida in April and Austin in May.
  • Early next year, you'll be able to hail an air taxi from Abu Dhabi and Dubai on a four-passenger Midnight aircraft. The eVTOL, operated by UAE-based Falcon Aviation , will cover the 81-mile trip in just 30 minutes. By road, the drive can take a few hours in traffic.
  • There's even a flying car driving school. Netherlands auto manufacturer PAL-V will show you the ins and outs of flying a car. They even have a flying car showroom in Munich where you can buy your own gyroplane/car combination. (It'll cost you about $550,000.)

Bottom line: Flying cars remain rare. But change is on the horizon.

How flying cars could change the way we travel

High prices and continued doubts about the viability of zipping around town like George Jetson haven't stopped people from thinking about the future. Experts seem to agree that safe VTOLs with FAA approval could change travel forever.

"It would reduce congestion by removing some traffic on the road and create a new aviation sector, with new jobs," said Raj Rajkumar, professor of computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon University.

Flying cars could dramatically cut the drive time between destinations typically served by short-haul commercial flights. So instead of catching a shuttle flight from Washington to New York, you'd just fly there in your own car in a fraction of the time it used to take to drive.

But that's just the beginning. As these vehicles become faster and more affordable, they hold the promise of competing with commercial aviation. Imagine flying your family car from the suburbs of an East Coast city to Florida for your next vacation in less time than it would take you to go to the airport, get through security, wait for your departure, fly, land, collect your luggage and rent an earthbound car?

The thought of ditching airlines, with their awful customer service and addictive loyalty programs, may be the greatest promise of the AAV revolution.

If you'd asked me a few weeks ago if such a future was possible, I would have been very skeptical. Now, I'm just a little skeptical.

This is the second of a two-part series on the future of air travel .

15 Things to Do in Santa Clara (CA)

Santa Clara is a city of nearly 125,000 residents that’s located in Santa Clara County, about 75 kilometers south of San Francisco .

The city was founded more than 200 years ago as a Spanish Mission. Now, it’s most well-known for its booming tech industry that’s commonly referred to around the world as Silicon Valley.

Though it’s common knowledge to most football fans, it’s a surprise to many to discover that the relatively small city is also the home of the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers.

Visitors to Santa Clara have abundant activity options at their fingertips without venturing outside city limits, so staying engaged and entertained shouldn’t be an issue.

1. Levi’s Stadium

Levi's Stadium

With a capacity of nearly 70,000, Levi’s Stadium on Marie P. DeBartolo Way in Santa Clara is one of the country’s premier professional football stadiums.

The 49ers play their home games here, and during the off-season, the stadium hosts a variety of annual events, including concerts featuring big names in the music industry.

Taking a family to a football game isn’t the least expensive activity option in the area, but for those who’ve never taken in a pro game, it’s an exhilarating experience that may be worth the cost.

Guided tours are also regularly available, and the bars and restaurants around the stadium are fun to visit year-round.

2. Ulistac Natural Area

Ulistac Natural Area

Despite its large population and the overall hustle and bustle, the Bay Area features plenty of urban parks and natural areas that are convenient options for those interested in enjoying the great outdoors.

The Ulistac Natural Area is located on Lick Mill Road in Santa Clara. It is comprised of more than 40 acres that include a variety of distinct environments.

The natural area straddles the Guadalupe River and is home to an array of plants and animals that are well-suited to its riparian habitat.

A particularly popular attraction for bird watchers, it features a number of well-marked nature trails dotted with interpretive signs.

3. Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival

Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival

Californians take their art and wine seriously, and there’s no better way to combine the two than by visiting the Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival.

The event is held in the city’s Central Park and features nearly 200 vendors from across the country selling fine art and crafts, gourmet food, and a vast selection of California’s best wines.

Proceeds are donated to worthwhile causes that benefit residents in need. It all takes place in the early fall when the central California weather is perfect for outdoor activities.

Other highlights include live entertainment and lots of art-related activities for kids.

4. The de Saisset Museum

de Saisset Museum

Though he’s not exactly a household name for those who don’t typically travel in West Coast art circles, Ernest de Saisset was one of the Bay Area’s most prominent artists in the 19th century.

Saisset was a French immigrant who enrolled in Santa Clara University and studied painting as a young man.

The museum that now bears his name is located on the university’s campus. It includes a collection of more than 100 of his most impressive works.

It’s as much a historical attraction as it is an art one, and it also has other works from European and American artists dating back hundreds of years.

5. Intel Museum

Intel Museum

Intel is one of the titans of the tech world. Over the years, it has been responsible for some of the most significant technological leaps forward in computer hardware.

The Intel Museum is located on the campus of the company’s world headquarters in Santa Clara, and it’s regularly open to the public.

Even for those who don’t fall into the tech-savvy category, it’s a fascinating place that’s definitely worth an hour or two of time.

Though it may sound dry to technophobes, it’s packed with interactive exhibits for visitors of all ages, so it’s great for kids with short attention spans too.

6. Santa Clara Farmers’ Market

Farmers Market

There’s really no better way to rub elbows with locals, enjoy pleasant weather, and have access to tons of great products you won’t find elsewhere than by visiting a farmers’ market.

The Santa Clara Farmers’ Market is open year-round and features a little bit of everything – from seasonal produce and fresh baked goods to health and body products and prepared food items.

Held on Jackson Street near the downtown area, it’s common to find different items each time you go.

Spending a few bucks is a great way to support local farmers and entrepreneurs, and don’t be shy about asking them for suggestions for things to see and do while in town.

7. California’s Great America

California's Great America

There’s no shortage of theme parks in the Golden State, but there’s one clear choice for those visiting Santa Clara.

California’s Great America is located on Great America Parkway just outside of town. It features tons of rides, dining options, kid’s activities, and a water park that’s a huge draw during the hot summer months.

Though Great America can really draw a crowd during peak times when kids are enjoying their summer vacations, previous guests have noted that wait times for rides weren’t overly long.

Many families choose to spend an entire day on-site to avoid wasting valuable recreational time in the car.

8. Mission Santa Clara

Mission Santa Clara

Mission Santa Clara is one of the city’s premier historic sites, and it’s now conveniently located on the campus of Santa Clara University.

The mission was established by Franciscans in the 1770s to spread Christianity to the area’s Native American population.

Sadly, things didn’t go according to plan; due to several natural disasters, the mission was forced to move from its original site to where it is now.

Over the years, it was also run by the Jesuits. Though it’s no longer functioning in its original role, it now doubles as a museum and chapel that are open to visitors.

9. The Triton Museum of Art

Triton Museum of Art

Though guests tend to visit the Triton Museum of Art for the works in its collection, its stunning contemporary architecture usually makes a big impression as well.

The museum’s collection includes works from all over the country, but its emphasis is on pieces created by Bay Area artists using local people and scenery as inspiration.

The grounds also include a sprawling outdoor sculpture garden spread over nearly seven acres, and a home from the mid-1860s that’s among the most well-preserved examples of historic American architecture in the area.

The museum is located on Warburton Avenue, and most visitors spend a few hours on-site.

10. Santa Clara Players

The Santa Clara Players traces its roots all the way back to the early ‘60s, when a group of local performers began putting on small shows for the community.

Now nearly seven decades later, they’re still going strong. Their annual performances run the gamut from dramatic theater and mystery to satire and humor.

The players are part of a community theater group staffed by talented volunteers dedicated to providing high-quality, family-friendly entertainment at a reasonable cost.

They’re located on Don Avenue in Santa Clara and offer lots of volunteer opportunities for budding actors and stagehands.

11. Central Park

I’m a Doctor. Dengue Fever Took Even Me by Surprise on Vacation.

A black-and-white illustration of an Aedes aegypti mosquito.

By Deborah Heaney

Dr. Heaney is a physician in Ann Arbor, Mich.

I hate mosquitoes so much that I take my own bug repellent to parties. But in early March, on a trip with my partner to the idyllic island of Curaçao off Venezuela, I was caught off guard by insect bites after our bed-and-breakfast hosts said that mosquitoes didn’t usually appear until late summer.

Near the end of the vacation, my legs began to ache. After I couldn’t keep up with my partner on a snorkeling adventure, he pulled me from the water. My ribs felt broken, as if I’d been smashed against large boulders in the sea. Later that day came intense fever, alternating with shaking chills.

Back in Michigan — weak, nauseated and dehydrated from explosive diarrhea — I ended up in the emergency department. Tests showed worrisome white blood cell levels and abnormal liver numbers. The physician assistant who saw me was perplexed; she gave me IV fluids and medication for nausea and sent me home.

A few days later I developed itching so severe that I couldn’t sleep. A bright red rash spread over both thighs and up my lower back. My brain was foggy, and my balance was so impaired that I would have failed a sobriety test. My primary care doctor had no answers. But as my head began to clear, it occurred to me to request a dengue fever test.

Two days later, the test was positive.

Despite my training in medicine, I was blindsided. Dengue, a mosquito-borne illness, is surging through Latin America and the Caribbean, including in Puerto Rico, where a public health emergency was declared last week. This year is likely to be the worst on record, in part because of El Niño-driven temperature spikes and extreme weather linked to climate change. As temperatures rise and precipitation patterns grow more erratic, the problem will get only worse.

But neither the traveling public nor our frontline health workers are prepared. Without urgent reforms to how we educate travelers, doctors, nurses and others — as well as reforms to public health surveillance and early warning systems — we will be doomed to miss textbook cases like mine. That means those infected with dengue will miss out on timely treatment, possibly even spreading the virus to areas where it was never found before.

The dengue virus, which is primarily transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, infects up to 400 million people every year in nearly every region of the world, but it is most prevalent in Latin America, South and Southeast Asia and East Africa. Most cases are asymptomatic or, like mine, are considered mild, although the aptly nicknamed breakbone fever often doesn’t feel that way. Some 5 percent of cases progress to a severe, life-threatening disease including hemorrhagic fever.

One malicious feature of dengue is that when someone is infected a second time with a different type of the virus, the risk of severe illness is higher. A vaccine exists, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends it only for children ages 9 to 16 who had dengue before and live in places where the virus is common. That’s because, paradoxically, if you’ve never had dengue, the vaccine puts you at greater risk of severe illness your first time.

Dengue outbreaks, which, in the Americas, tend to occur every three to five years , now appear to be expanding their geographic reach as temperatures climb . The Aedes aegypti mosquito has typically had difficulty surviving and reproducing during the winter in temperate climates. But in parts of Brazil, which is experiencing a dengue emergency , the thermometer no longer dips as low in the winter as it once did, allowing the bugs to reproduce year-round. Overall, Latin America and the Caribbean have had three times the number of cases this year as reported for the same period in 2023, which was a record year. Higher temperatures are also helping the virus develop faster inside the mosquito, leading to a higher viral load and a higher probability of transmission. And mosquitoes are benefiting from standing water from rains and floods that are growing more extreme in a warming world.

As the virus spreads globally, travelers are bringing infections back to the continental United States. Based on 2024 numbers to date, this year should show a clear increase of cases here at home compared with 2023, given that the typical dengue season hasn’t even started yet. There could also be local outbreaks in places like Florida, Texas and California, which experienced small ones in the past. As Dr. Gabriela Paz-Bailey, the chief of the C.D.C.’s dengue branch, told me by email, “Increased travel to places with dengue risk could lead to more local transmission, but the risk of widespread transmission in the continental United States is low.”

But since testing is done only on a small fraction of cases, many are going uncounted. I was the one who requested that I be tested. Had I not been given a diagnosis, I would not be aware of my increased risk of severe illness if I am reinfected. Getting a diagnosis is crucial to inform those infected in areas where the Aedes mosquito lives so that the virus doesn’t spread further.

The growing risk means travelers to regions with dengue must be savvier: They can check local news and U.S. State Department advisories, bring an effective insect repellent and protective clothing and book lodging with air-conditioning or screens on the windows and doors. Though Aedes aegypti mosquitoes now live year-round in many locations and are pushing northward into new regions , thanks to climate change and other factors, there are still seasons when the risk is greater, and travelers might consider avoiding trips during those periods. Travel insurance with medical coverage may also be a useful precaution.

For medical professionals, this should be a warning. We need to start thinking about dengue as a possible diagnosis, not just a piece of textbook trivia. We should ask about recent travel when treating patients presenting with symptoms, especially symptoms not easily explained by other diagnoses.

Medical schools are gradually integrating climate change effects into curriculums . This is essential, since malaria, Lyme, West Nile and other insect-borne diseases are on the rise, as are other conditions like heat illness, asthma and allergies that are worsened by climate change. This work must accelerate, and training must include those of us who are already practicing. State medical boards should consider mandating continuing education on tropical emerging illnesses, as they do on many other pertinent topics.

After receiving my positive test result, I called the emergency department to leave a message for my previous provider about my diagnosis, assuming she had never before seen dengue. If we continue on this trajectory, I’m certain this won’t be her last case.

Deborah Heaney is a preventive, occupational and environmental health physician practicing in Ann Arbor, Mich. She also holds a master’s degree in public health.

CBP Announces Trusted Traveler Programs Fee Changes

WASHINGTON – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced today an upcoming fee change for some of its most popular Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP).

On April 2, a final rule was published in the Federal Register , harmonizing the fees for the NEXUS , Global Entry, and SENTRI programs, better reflecting the program costs. The new fees, which have not been updated in over 15 years, will go into effect October 1, 2024. As these programs have matured and expanded, updating the fee structures is critical to the continuation and management of the programs.

Once the rule goes into effect, applicants under the age of 18 will be exempt from the application fee when a parent or legal guardian is already a member of, or concurrently applying for NEXUS, SENTRI, or Global Entry. SENTRI, which allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers entering the United States using dedicated primary lanes at Southern land border ports, will move from an “a la carte” fee structure to a uniform fee of $120, which will be collected in full when each application is submitted. The fees for NEXUS, a joint program managed by CBP and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) that allows dedicated processing between the U.S. and Canada, will increase from $50 to $120, and Global Entry fees will increase from $100 to $120.

TTP supports CBP’s mission of securing U.S. borders while facilitating lawful travel and trade. Travelers must be pre-approved for TTP. All applicants undergo rigorous and recurring background checks and an in-person interview before enrollment. While a key goal of the programs is to expedite travelers through the process, members may still be selected for further examination when entering the United States. To maintain a strict standard in establishing TTP members as low-risk travelers, any violation of a program’s terms and conditions will result in the appropriate enforcement action and termination of the traveler’s membership privileges.

For more information on TTP, follow @CBP or visit ttp.dhs.gov .

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the comprehensive management, control, and protection of our nation’s borders, combining customs, immigration, border security, and agricultural protection at and between official ports of entry.
