15 Best Things to Do in Troyes (France)

Troyes is a renaissance city in the south of Champagne , with streets of multicoloured half-timbered houses from the 1500s.

There may not be a prettier historic centre in all of France, and this is owing to a disaster.

Most of these brightly-painted houses are from right after a fire in 1524 when nearly all the city had to be rebuilt, so there’s a level of harmony that you can’t find anywhere else.

Be awestruck at one of Europe’s finest cathedrals and pass hours milling around old mansions that give you a window on everything about Troyes’ past, from its medieval healthcare to manual trades.

Lets explore the best things to do in Troyes :

1. Troyes Cathedral

Troyes Cathedral

Started in the 13th century and completed more than 400 years later, Troyes Cathedral is very harmonious inside and out despite being built in different eras.

The building is entirely gothic, and is treasured as one of the most beautiful churches, not just in France, but all of Europe.

What will strike you is the sense of space in the nave, which is at once powerful and full of grace.

Light pours in through more than 1,500 square metres of stained glass.

Some of these windows are as old as the 1200s.

The essential ones are the three huge roses, measuring ten metres across and with astoundingly intricate traceries designed by the renaissance architect Martin Chambiges.

2. Maison de l’Outil et de la Pensée Ouvrière

Maison de l'Outil et de la Pensée Ouvrière

Hôtel de Mauroy, at 7 Rue de la Trinité, is a joyous renaissance mansion from 1550 and one of Troyes’ loveliest sights.

The Hôtel is a stone, brick and timber building around a courtyard, with a wonderful half-timbered turret.

If the outside is beautiful, the interior is enthralling for its massive cache of antique craftsman’s tools.

In 65 cabinets there are 11,000 objects in all, making this the largest tool museum in the world.

Anyone who values historic trades in leather, wood, metal and stone will be engrossed by these instruments, dating from the 1600s and showing how each craft changed over time.

There are also hand-crafted masterpieces to see: These were created by the Compagnons du Devoir, which is a sort of national guild for craftsmen and women.

3. Église de la Madeleine

Église de la Madeleine

Troyes’ oldest church is from the 1100s, though the nave and choir needed rebuilding in the 1500s and 1600s.

If the outside is understated, it’s the opulence of the interior decoration that makes the church crucial if you’re in the city.

The most impressive and historically important element is the choir’s renaissance stone rood screen, which was sculpted between 1508 and 1517. Few of these survive in French churches, because most were removed during the reformation as they separated everyday worshippers from the most sacred part of the church.

The sublime stained glass windows are also from the renaissance, and unlike many are easy to interpret , illustrating well-known Bible scenes like the Garden of Eden and the Passion.

4. Old Troyes

Old Troyes

Troyes has a historic centre that will transport you to a different era.

Dawdling from shop to shop is almost an all-day activity, as the medieval quarter is deceptively large.

That’s because there were originally two districts: The Cité is to the west, around the Cathedral and where the nobility and clergy had their residences.

And then on the east side of the Canal du Trévois is the Bourg, for the merchants and hoi polloi.

Throughout, there’s a multitude of Troyan timber-framed houses that evoke the medieval and renaissance period.

At four storeys high, these lovably rickety buildings are topped with triangular gables and all have different shades of daub.

5. Ruelle des Chats

Ruelle des Chats

You can’t say you’ve seen Troyes until you’ve walked this medieval alleyway.

Here the overhanging corbelled houses converge in a sort of urban ravine, blocking out all daylight.

The alley is named after the fact that a cat can jump from a building on one side of the street to the other.

It wouldn’t be difficult as the opposing facades actually touch each other at the top.

If you want to know why these houses are so top-heavy, well in medieval French cities tax was calculated according to a building’s footprint, and not additional storeys.

6. Musée d’Art Moderne

Musée d'Art Moderne

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a provincial modern art museum better than this one in the former episcopal palace in Troyes.

You’ll be given a substantial overview of 19th and 20th century art in France, via paintings, sculptures, illustrations and decorative items.

The 19th-century galleries boast works by artists known to all, like Gauguin, Courbet and Degas.

But if the museum has one speciality it would probably be fauvism from the early-20th century, with pieces by the movement’s key figures like Derain, Braque, Dufy and Kees van Dongen all here.

There’s also an entire room for the local artist Maurice Marinot, filled with his exquisite art deco glassware.

7. Musée de Vauluisant

Musée de Vauluisant

There are actually two attractions in the fabulous renaissance Hôtel de Vauluisant.

You’ll know the building for its twin circular towers, and after seeing the interior you’ll have a bit more perspective about Troyes and the region.

First you have the historical museum, which has curated the marvellous religious paintings, sculpture and stained glass from defunct churches and monasteries around Troyes.

You can get close to the stained glass and will be astounded by the craftsmanship.

There’s also historic furniture and decoration saved from the interiors of wealthy homes that have now been destroyed.

Then you have the Museum of Hosiery: Troyes was the hosiery capital of France from the 1700s up to the 1960s, and there are both primitive wooden looms and sophisticated machines from the industry’s golden age in the 1800s.

8. Hôtel-Dieu-le-Comte

Hôtel-Dieu-le-Comte

Though the current design is from the 1700s, this former hospital has been here since the 1100s.

It now holds classrooms and lecture theatres for the University of Troyes, but there’s a quirky museum to hold your attention inside.

Entered via the quayside is the hospital’s old apothecary and laboratory, which looks much as it did during the reign of Louis XIV. There are three rooms with wooden cabinets stacked to the ceiling with glass bottles, ceramic jars and painted boxes, though you may be disturbed to find out what passed for remedies in those days! There are also artefacts from the medieval hospital, with shrines, instruments and the busts of physicians who worked here.

9. Musée Saint-Loup

Musée Saint-Loup

Taking its name from the 17th-century abbey that contains it, the Saint-Loup Museum has Troyes’ archaeology, natural history and art up to the modern period.

The archaeology wing is in the beautiful vaulted cellars of the abbey, and has Etruscan, Greek and Egyptian artefacts.

See the 5th-century Treasure of Pouan, discovered in a tomb a short way north of Troyes and composed of jewellery, weapons and intricate ornamental fastenings.

Visit the higher floors for French, Flemish, Dutch and Italian painting up to the 1800s, showcasing 17th-century French luminaries like Charles Le Brun, Philippe de Champaigne and the Troyes-born Pierre Mignard.

10. Basilica of St. Urbain

Basilica of St. Urbain

The 13th-century Pope Urbain IV was born in Troyes and had this church built in 1262 for his patron saint.

It was situated right on the site where his shoemaker father had his cobbler’s workshop.

The choir and transept were built in just two years between 1262 and 1264. But the rest of the construction would be drawn out over centuries because of war and money shortages, and the church was only finished in 1905. But there’s a wealth of historic art inside, mostly in the choir, which has stained glass windows from the 13th century.

Here you can also see the renaissance statue of the “Vierge aux Raisins”, the Virgin with child, clutching a vine with grapes.

11. Factory Outlets

Marques Avenue

If you fancy a bargain then you’ll be thrilled to find that Troyes is Europe’s Mecca for factory outlet shopping, which is a legacy of the local textile industry.

There are three colossal shopping centres a few kilometres from the city.

Marques Avenue has 240 brands, and the outlets for Adidas and Nike here are so large they look more like supermarkets.

Marques City was the one that started it all, and has sportswear and fashion brands at between 30% and 50% less than retail price.

Then there’s McArthurGlen, with more than a 100 stores selling previous season items at a 30% discount.

Just make sure you have enough space in your luggage!

12. Coeur de Troyes

Coeur de Troyes

At the junction of Rue Passerat  and Rue Hennequin is a modern symbol for Troyes, a monumental stainless steel sculpture of a heart, made by the couple, Michèle and Thierry Kayo-Houël.

The location is no accident, as this spot is the “heart” of the city, where the Bourg meets the Cité on the canal’s quayside.

This monument needs to be seen at night for its pulsing red lights, which beat faster as you get nearer and your motion is detected by three cameras inside the sculpture.

13. Hôtel des Chapelaines

Hôtel des Chapelaines

One of the renaissance treasures to look out for is this beautiful stone mansion on Rue Turenne, which has a balustrade below the roof pediments and pilasters framing each window.

The mansion was built in the decade after the great fire in 1524, for Nicolas Largentier who belonged to a rich family of drapers.

Later Largentiers became nobility when they acquired the Château de Chapelaine in Vassimont, and took the Chapelaine name that came with it.

Among the royalty to have stayed at this handsome mansion, are Louis XIII in 1629 and the Holy Roman Emperor Francis II in 1814.

14. Champagne Route

Champagne Route

Although all of the champagne houses are headquartered further north in Reims and Épernay , the vignoble does extend as far south as Troyes.

In fact about a fifth of vineyards producing champagne are in the Aube department, making it the second-largest producer of this prized beverage.

Inside 30 minutes you’ll be in the Côte des Bar region, and on a Champagne route that runs for more than 200 kilometres, through lovely stone villages on chalk hillsides striped with pinot vines.

A lot of what the family-run producers make in this southern part of Champagne is sold onto the big names in the north.

Call in at the award-winning Champagne Rémy Massin et Fils for an enthusiastic tour.

15. Cuisine

Andouillette de Troyes

Andouillette de Troyes is a sausage that is taken very seriously: Charcuteries and butchers have to adhere to tough guidelines to gain the envied 5A label to make this delicacy and can spend years trying to achieve this recognition.

You can see what all the fuss is about at most traditional restaurants.

The sausage is made only with pork chitterlings and stomach, and normally comes with green beans and either fries or mashed potatoes.

Order a glass of soft champagne or Aube cider to go with it.

Chaorce meanwhile is the regional cheese, and it’s a national household name, made with cow’s milk and with a soft texture.

In polls of France's most romantic towns, Troyes invariably makes the grade – and with good reason. Its astonishingly intact, ludicrously pretty historic centre wings you back to the Middle Ages, with its warren of cobbled streets, fine ensemble of half-timbered houses in pastel hues, once home to wealthy textile merchants, and uplifting Gothic churches. Often overlooked, it’s one of the best places to get a sense of what Europe looked like back when Molière was penning his finest plays and the Three Musketeers were swashbuckling.

Here is where visitors get to know a part of Troyes’ history when it was the hosiery capital of France in the 1700s to the 1960s.

A visit to the Musée de Vauluisant is an enriching and fascinating experience that visitors shouldn’t pass up while in Troyes.

Sainte-Madeleine Troyes

Another church that should be part of any Troyes itinerary is the majestic Sainte Madeleine Church. This Gothic church dates back to 1120 and was rebuilt in 1200.

This church is the oldest in town, and one of the best attractions in Troyes.

Sainte Madeleine Church is known for its intricately carved stone screen, with its ogee arches that hang over the church’s nave.

It was added to the church in the 16th century, and one of the few remaining stone screens in France.

It dates back to the Renaissance era and depicts the Virgin Mary holding Jesus in one hand and a bunch of champagne grapes on the other.

Ruelle Chats Troyes

One of the unique things to do in Troyes is a walk through the medieval alleys known as Ruelle de Chats.

The name literally means ‘the cat’s alleys, and is quite an interesting place to visit.

The buildings on either side of the alleys are built so close that their roofs are almost touching. This proximity allows cats to jump from one building to another, hence the name.

Make sure to try their bread as well, particularly the brioche that comes in various shapes, sizes and flavors.

bottles of Champagnes Drappier

Troyes is in Aube, a department in the northeast of France known as the second-largest champagne producer in the country.

While in this charming medieval town, it is just proper to spend time in an actual Champagne house.

Troyes may not be as popular as Reims or Epernay, but a visit to a champagne house here is quite a treat.

A good place to visit in Troyes is the family-owned Drappier Champagne.

This producer of the bubbly uses bio-dynamic methods and produces top-quality Champagne sold at affordable prices.

Another cheap option to consider is to travel to Troyes by bus. We travelled by bus to Troyes as the TER tickets were more expensive, 35€, while the bus ticket was 8€. And we took the train on the way back for 11€. I would rather have used the train both ways, but it was more interesting to take the bus!

You can book your ticket using the TheTrainLine website or app.

Explore the Old Tow n

Troyes’ Old Town is a picturesque and historic city centre district. It is renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved medieval architecture, which transports visitors back to the Middle Ages.

Troyes’ old town is composed of what most European Old Towns are famous for old cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, historic sites and, of course, quaint and amazing to explore. Yet it never gets tiring to explore them.

The main square in the Old Town is the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville . It’s a bustling hub surrounded by charming buildings and cafes. The City Hall (Hôtel de Ville) is an impressive Renaissance-style building with a clock tower.

You can also find various boutiques, making it the perfect place for shopping; from clothes to antiques, you will find what you are looking for!

Within the Old Town, you’ll discover several historic sites, including the Troyes Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul), a magnificent Gothic masterpiece with beautiful stained glass windows and intricate sculptures.

Other notable sites include the Saint-Urbain Basilica and the Hôtel-Dieu-le-Comte, a former hospital-turned-museum .

While these are located in the city’s old town, I will be writing about each of them specifically as these are things to do in Troyes on their own and deserve a place in this post!

troyes cathedral

Troyes Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul)

The Troyes Cathedral is celebrated for its stunning Gothic architecture, which dates back to the 13th century. Its construction began in the 12th century and underwent significant expansions and renovations over the centuries, resulting in its current form.

One of the most remarkable features of the Troyes Cathedral is its collection of stained glass windows. These windows are renowned for their exquisite beauty and historical importance. They depict biblical stories and scenes from the lives of saints in the vibrant, colourful glass.

The cathedral has witnessed numerous historical events and has been the site of royal coronations and other important ceremonies.

As I mentioned, the cathedral is in the city’s heart, making it a prominent landmark in the old town. It is often a focal point for tourists exploring Troyes.

troyes hotel dieu le comte

Hôtel-Dieu-le-Comte

As mentioned above, Hôtel-Dieu-le-Comte is one of the landmarks of Troyes that you can visit in the Old Town.

Originally founded as a charitable hospital in the 12th century, it now stands as a museum, offering visitors a glimpse into the evolution of healthcare and medicine through the ages. The entrance, with its golden decorations, makes it feel like a very opulent place.

You can admire its stunning Renaissance façade before you get in. The ornate interiors and remarkable apothecary exhibit transport you back and through the ages of medicine, revealing the innovations that have defined this institution.

Ruelle des Chats

Discover the “Alley of Cats,” a charming laneway adorned with cat sculptures, each with its unique story. These sculptures are created by local artists and are placed throughout the alley, adding to its playful and creative atmosphere.

While I don’t think this alley can be considered a hidden gem due to its popularity, Ruelle des Chats feels somewhat hidden, making it feel like a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by visitors exploring the city.

Of course, the alley has its own legends and stories, some of which involve the mysterious appearances of new cat sculptures. These legends add to the enchantment and intrigue surrounding the Ruelle des Chats. It’s a quirky must-see when you’re visiting Troyes.

There are many restaurants on this street, and you can find one called “Le Chat Noir” (Black Cat), which seems to be the most famous on the street. It doesn’t cater to one type of cuisine and offers.

The alley is conveniently located near the city’s historic centre, so you can easily incorporate a visit to Ruelle des Chats into your exploration of Troyes’ old town, with its half-timbered houses, museums, and other attractions.

coeur de troyes

Le Coeur de Troyes

“Le Cœur de Troyes” is a captivating art installation crafted by the talented artist Didier Marcel; this intricate sculpture, resembling a giant heart of intertwined branches, represents the city’s deep connection to nature and its artistic soul.

Located at the Place de la Libération, it is a striking symbol of Troyes’ commitment to blending urban life with natural beauty. The sculpture’s dynamic design and the way it plays with light and shadow make it a popular attraction, especially during sunset when it comes alive with a warm, glowing aura, symbolizing the city’s beating heart.

You can also find couples taking photos and families and kids enjoying the water fountains on a hot summer night there.

Ideally, while it is also nice during the day, I’d recommend you to see it at night if possible as I find it way more charming.

it celebrated its 10-year anniversary when I last visited (2023)!

Built in the 13th century, this basilica is dedicated to Saint Urban, the patron saint of vineyards and winemakers. Its soaring spires and intricate stone carvings are awe-inspiring, while the interior boasts a tranquil atmosphere that invites contemplation.

The basilica is a testament to religious devotion and the architectural genius of the era. While admiring this beautiful building, you can find a few restaurants with terraces nearby to enjoy drinks or a meal.

Fun fact: The basilica was planned to be part of a much larger cathedral complex that would have been one of the largest in Europe, rivalling even Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. However, the grand plans were never fully realised due to various historical and financial constraints.

✈ Best Travel Ressources To Plan Your Next Trip If you need help planning your next trip, don’t worry. I’ve got you covered! Here are my favourite websites and apps to plan a trip! ✈ How To Find Flights? My favourite website for booking flights is Skyscanner; it is a good comparator for finding the cheapest flights. Google Flight is also a good help when it comes to comparing flights. ✈ Where To Book Accommodations? The best sites to book accommodations are Booking.com or Expedia. They both allow you to collect points for a discount; it’s worth comparing the two as they often have different pricing for the same hotels. Another perk about Booking.com and Expedia is that you can get bundle deals for flights and accommodations, which can sometimes help you save a lot of money. And don’t worry; you can also select to add accommodation for only a specific part of the trip if you’re not only staying in one place. ✈ Best Sites To Book Activities My go-to website when I need to book an activity is GetYourGuide when I can’t get a ticket directly on the website or if it’s easier to go through them. I always check if the price is the same, though, as the whole point is for it to be easier but not more expensive. If I don’t find the activity I want on GetYourGuide, I like to check Viator for more options! You can also check out Klook if you need to book more than just activities and would like to get everything from the same website—(i.e. transport cards, car rental, hotel…). ✈ Other helpful travel resources – Radical Storage: If you need a place to keep your luggage for an extended period when you travel, I recommend using them. Best Things To Do In Troyes: Hidden Gem In France’s Champagne Region

Embarking on a memorable journey to Troyes? Don’t miss my comprehensive guide to this enchanting village in the Champagne region of France.

Explore the best things to do in Troyes, from wandering through its charming half-timbered houses to marveling at the exquisite Gothic design of the Basilique Saint-Urbain.

Troyes is romantic, a hidden gem that offers a perfect day trip from Paris.

iconic half timbered houses on Place Alexandre Israel in Troyes France

I almost didn’t get to see this little gem. I was on a medieval road trip in northeast France. My travel partner wanted to head back to Paris .

But I was besotted with the notion of visiting just one more village: Troyes, a ludicrously pretty town. I wasn’t ready for my geographical cure to end just yet. I pulled out my Rick Steves guidebook to bolster my argument for seeing Troyes, one lawyer to another.

“See,” I said, it says that Troyes is “bursting with romance.” He countered, “I’ve lived in Paris for three years and never heard of Troyes.”

I counter-countered: “How many half timbers have you seen in Paris?” (Paris, of course, is more noted for Haussmann boulevards than medieval wonders.)

romantically leaning house in Troyes France

Who could begrudge me a burst of romance? Doesn’t everyone periodically need a high end infusion of quixotic romance in their lives, as a counterpoise to the uninspiring sameness of our daily routines?

He could not deny me.

Sniffing out Romance

So having won the debate with riveting flowery language, we drove from Reims to Troyes to sniff out romance and see if we would burst.

The first thing we learned is that Troyes is unpredictably pronounced “twa.” But it rolls off the tongue in a languid chic French kind of way.

Here I am in Troyes, about to burst

The next thing we learned is that Troyes has a big heart.

I mean, literally, it has a big silver heart imbedded along the Canal du Trevois. While the two ton metal sculpture itself is nothing special, the symbolism is. The big heart glows red at night, a symbol of romantic Troyes.

Appealingly, the historic core of Troyes even maps out in the shape of a champagne cork and is called the “Bouchoun de Champagne.” Doesn’t that almost make you melt?

The village wasn’t planned that way. Champagne corks didn’t even exist then. It was just a happy historic coincidence.

Now, to my mind, the way it evolved, without the intervention of practicality or as a cynical tourist draw, is affirmatively romantic.

History of Medieval Troyes

Troyes began as a town of the Gauls. Under the Roman emperor Augustus, it became the capital of the Gallic tribe known as the Tricasses.

Converted to Christianity in the 3rd century, the town was later threatened by Huns, sacked by the Normans, and eventually came under the authority of the counts of Champagne.

They, in turn, established the great merchant fairs, which gained an international reputation and brought Troyes exceptional prosperity.

street with half timbered houses at sunset

Now, on the surface, that doesn’t sound terribly intriguing or romantic, but the famous “foires de champagne,” the medieval fairs , were.

Troyes hosted a “hot fair” and a “cold fair” each year. Merchants from across Europe came to sell their wares. Troyes was a buzzing swashbuckling hive of activity with all the noise and color of the middle ages.

And, even better, the “foire de champagne” has been re-introduced.

Now, Troyes holds a modernized festival-like version of the classic fair in late spring. It comes compete with exhibitions, markets, singing performances, roller coasters, and pop-up restaurants.

Oh là là!

Guide To Troyes : Best Things To Do

Here are some of the top attractions and best things to do in Troyes.

1. Historic Center

Troyes was mostly destroyed in a dramatic conflagration in 1524. But it was promptly re-built and faithfully re-produced. Its 16th century buildings reflect a mix of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

The best things to do in contemporary Troyes, one which I wholly approve of, is simply strolling around the well-preserved and pedestrianized historic center.

There is no need to seek out romance. It will assault you from all angles and, unless you are a complete skeptic, you will be entranced.

Start by strolling through the heart of the city, Place Alexandre Israël, where you can grab a croissant from a local bakery and savor a leisurely breakfast at one of the charming cafés.

medieval buildings in Troyes France

Everywhere, there are multi-colored half timbered houses in pastel palettes with vertical, horizontal, and diagonal stripes.

The buildings lurch and slouch with an engaging lack of symmetry. Make sure to visit Rue Champeaux, where you’ll find some of the most iconic half-timbered houses, each with its own distinct character.

Signs dots the buildings, and you will be reminded of the Musee Carnavalet in Paris.

Indeed, Troyes has been described as:

“A city where Love is written with a capital L, where all of the colours of the rainbow come together. It is a place where every lover will feel at home, and a place that should find a home in every lover’s heart.”

“Troyes is a bit of a revelation, don’t you think?” I asked my travel partner, trying to get him to admit he was glad we visited. “Yes,” he conceded, with a tiny trace of irony. “I’m already feeling the urge for a glass of champagne at one these darling little cafes.”

I could not begrudge him.

the medieval Ruelle du Chats in Troyes France

2. Ruelle de Chats

On your walkabout, you cannot help but stumble upon the medieval Ruelle du Chats.

In this dark and narrow medieval alley way, miraculously survived from a bygone era, the top of the buildings almost touch.

The beams allowed the Troyes cats to go, with utter freedom, from attic to attic. As part of the city’s ongoing renovation, three new half timbered buildings were added to the alley in 2014.

3. Troyes Churches

Troyes is called the “city of 10 churches.” As our budgeted time for romance was growing short, we took in the main two.

Troyes Cathedral, one of the best things to do in Troyes

First, we stopped in at the Gothic Cathedral of Saint Peter and Saint Paul . Built between the 13-17th century, it’s the quintessence of Champenoise Gothic architecture and one of France’s largest churches. Much like the Basilica of St. Denis in Paris , the second tower was never completed.

Joan of Arc and Charles VII stopped here on the way to his coronation inReims in 1429. There’s a plaque commemorating the occasion.

The cathedral also has lovely stained glass that may rival nearby Reims Cathedral. The windows depict a wide range of subjects, including biblical scenes, saints, martyrs, and intricate decorative designs. They showcase the evolution of stained glass artistry from the 13th to the 19th century.

READ : One Day In Reims Itinerary

There’s also the massive, and more authentically grimy, Basilica of Saint Urbain. The basilica is a classic example of late 13th century Gothic architecture. I preferred it over the cathedral, actually.

The basilica was admired by Viollet-le-Duc, a gothic revivalist, and architect of all things frothy and romantic, like Carcassonne , Notre Dame , and Pierrefonds .

If you have time, visit the small Gothic church of St.-Jean-au-Marche is between Rue Emile Zola and Rue Champeaux. This is where, in 1420, Henry V of England married Catherine of Valois.

Musee d'Art Moderne in Troyes France

4. Troyes’ Museum of Modern Art

And there’s some cultural heft to go along with all the overwhelming romance and Gothic splendor of Troyes. Tucked behind the cathedral is the Musee d’Art Moderne. It’s just undergone a four year renovation.

The museum is an unexpectedly good gallery housing a private collection in the bishop’s palace. It’s one of the best things to do in Troyes.

The museum has an abundance of modern art (especially Fauves) including works by big name artists such as Degas, Rodin, Matisse, Picasso, and Modigliani. It’s currently closed for renovation and scheduled to re-open in 2022.

My friend couldn’t help but sally up to a sculpture and strike a pose. “Is this a burst?, I asked.

my travel partner enjoying the romance of Troyes' Musee d'Art Moderne

5. Tool Museum

A Tool Museums doesn’t exactly sound romantic, does it?

But the museum is housed in the beautifully restored 16th century Hotel de Mauroy, located on Rue de la Trinite.

Spread across three floors, you’ll a collection of 17th to 19th century tools gathered from all over France. ou can learn about the craftsmanship behind these charming houses and gain insight into the artisans’ world.

Hotel de Mauroy, which houses the Tool Museum in Troyes

Having traversed the village bursting right and left, we were more than a little deflated and hungry. But had no idea where to dine. Normally inclined to seek out a quaint restaurant on a side street, this time, we plopped down in the cluttered main square.

The cafe was in a decidedly tourist area, but hunger called and romance waned.

Still, it had a surprisingly imaginative and eclectic menu, not your standard toursist fare despite being on a tourist drag. Had I done my research, I would have gone to Aux Crieurs du Vin in an attractive wine cave.

Tout Simplement on the Place Alexander Israel in Troyes France

The must try local cuisine in Troyes is the “Troyes andouillette,” a hearty coarse grained sausage.

After a brush with such smelly local “sausage” in northern Lille, I gave it a hard pass. (Besides, sausage and romance are not a natural pairing, by any measure.) We had the rillettes and moules instead.

7. Quay Dampierre

After dinner, we strolled along the Quay Dampierre. The quay offers a lovely promenade where visitors can take leisurely strolls and enjoy the serene beauty of the river.

The quai is adorned with several sculptures that contribute to the artistic and cultural and romantic ambiance of the town.

Troyes, the city of a thousand colors, is an often overlooked gem of France. Located approximately 87 miles (140km) to the southeast of Paris in the Grand Est region of France, this town is worth a visit for the architecture, churches, museums, food, and champagne (of course). Check out this guide to plan your day or weekend trip to Troyes.

How to Get to Troyes (From Paris)

To get to Troyes from Paris, you can take the train from Gare de l’Est . Since it’s a regional TER train and not one of those high-speed TGV trains you’ve heard so much about , the ride will take a little over an hour and a half.

With its close proximity to Paris and its walkability (You can cross the city center of Troyes by foot in about 25-30 minutes.), Troyes could easily be a day trip, but I’d recommend spending the night. Many places of interest close by about 6PM in addition to the hour or two when everything is closed during lunch. There’s a lot to do in Troyes, so you’ll want to plan your trip strategically.

Honestly, I was impressed with all the things that this town has to offer.

What to Do in Troyes

Whenever I head somewhere new, I always look to see if I can take a walking tour. I didn’t see any tours being offered by companies, but we decided to pick up an audio guide at the Tourism Office. They are available in multiple languages. There is also a free version of the walking tour completely online, but I think the device is easier to navigate and therefore, worth the price.

The audio guide offers a very nice route that brought us to all of the major landmarks and places we wanted to see. You can see the proposed itinerary on the map below.

map of the town of Troyes (France) showing its champagne cork outline

We both enjoyed the commentary on the audio guide, but we did skip a few places. We also stopped several times along the way for snacks and to visit certain museums and churches. The tour lasts an estimated three hours which is probably how long it takes if you strictly keep to the tour without making any stops. Let’s just say that we went at a very leisurely pace and our tour lasted much longer.

Check out the route but pick and choose what you do with your time! There’s no time limit for how long you can keep the audio device. You simply need to return it to them by closing time. Here’s how I pack my bag when I’m out all day .

Admire the Architecture

Walking around the narrow cobblestone streets, one of the first things that you’ll notice are the colorful, timber-framed houses which were built during the Renaissance but are based on a medieval design. Most of the buildings date from after the great fire of 1524 which ravaged a large part of the town. Those who couldn’t afford to rebuild their homes from stone opted to replicate their former homes in the traditional half-timbered construction.

This type of architecture can typically be found in only a few regions of France, namely, Grand Est , Bretagne , and Normandie .

Churches of Troyes

Basilique Saint-Urbain: This basilica is admired for its gothic architecture and huge stained glass windows. Additionally, the remains of Pope Urbain IV, are buried here as Troyes was his birthplace.

Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul: The Troyes Cathedral was constructed over several centuries but was never completed. In fact, there is an entire tower that was never built due to a lack of money, but this just adds to its charm! In addition to the stunning stained glass windows, you can also admire the church’s collection of relics which include the skull and femur of Saint Bernard, the spiritual father of the Knights Templar. There are over one hundred sacred objects on display.

Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul in Troyes, France

Église Sainte-Madeleine: This catholic church is one of the oldest in Troyes. It’s well-known for its rood screen (called un jubé in French) made of stone. A typical feature of late medieval times, a rood screen is an ornate partition separating the nave from the chancel in a church.

Museums of Troyes

For a rather small city, Troyes has quite a few museums. We chose two museums to visit (the first two listed here). It’s worth noting that most of the museums close for lunch. However, if you don’t finish your visit before the lunch break, you can generally go back to that museum to finish your visit in the afternoon, so make sure you keep track of your entrance ticket!

Landmarks to See

Le cœur de Troyes: a big, fat stainless steel heart weighing in at 2 tons—go take your picture in front of it! (P.S. It lights up in red at nighttime.)

Lili ou la dame au chapeau: Lili is made of bronze and is waiting on this bench for you. Go say hi!

Ruelle des chats: This is one of the most famous streets in Troyes. It’s a very narrow alley and apparently, cats used to jump from roof to roof.

What to Eat and Drink

I’m going to warn you right now that the andouillette de Troyes is not for the faint of heart. This artisanal sausage is made from pork large intestines and stomachs. Hand-prepared and garnished with onions, herbs, and spices, it cooks slowly for several hours in a well-seasoned stock. It can then be served in a number of ways: hot or cold and with or without sauce.

Unshockingly, Jonathan ordered the andouillette de Troyes twice in the same day. While I found it very flavorful, it was the texture that didn’t quite agree with me. I was only able to take one bite, but I encourage you to give it a try!

Chaource is a regional cheese originating from the French department of Aube and more specifically, from the town of Chaource, which is located just south of Troyes. It is a soft cheese made from cow’s milk. I found it to be slightly salty and not too strong. I really liked it!

The Prunelle de Troyes was perhaps our best discovery of the trip. It’s a liqueur made from the pits of sloe berries (blackthorn) which are a type of wild plum. By itself, it’s a great digestif after a meal: slightly fiery but sweet on the way down. It can also be served over ice, in a cocktail, or poured over a sorbet.

The Cellier Saint-Pierre , located right by the Troyes Cathedral, has been making this liqueur since 1840. When you stop by to pick up a bottle, be sure to ask if you can take a look at the cave downstairs.

There are lots of great restaurants and cafés in Troyes. Our favorite meal was at Le Jardin . They offer a fixed-price dinner menu (appetizer, main course, and dessert) for 45 euros. The lunch menu is around 25 euros. The food and the service were impeccable. If you think of it, call ahead to make a reservation so that you can get a spot in the cute garden courtyard.

Don’t forget to celebrate your trip with a glass of champagne . Troyes is located in the champagne region of France after all!

What is Troyes Famous for?

Troyes is a city of great historical and cultural wealth, with many well-preserved medieval and Renaissance buildings.

It is also known for its importance in the textile industry, particularly for producing high-quality fabrics and lace, so you can get clothes at very good prices.

In addition, the city is home to several interesting museums, such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Tools.

Wooden houses with flowers

By the way, if you’re interested in pronouncing Troyes in French, it’s something like “tʁwa” with the French R. Do you know how to say 3 in French? Well, it’s the same.

The Best Places to See in Troyes

These are the most interesting places to visit in Troyes.

Tour the Historic Center

The historic center of Troyes is one of the most beautiful in France. We loved the architecture we saw here.

There are lots and lots of old houses with half-timbering and facades painted in different colors, which makes the whole center a super instagrammable place .

The hardest part of this post is choosing which pictures to post!!!

Walk around the Place de la Liberation to see the center of Troyes. It is in this area where the great majority of these 3-story, colorful, chestnut-roofed buildings, built after the great fire of 1524, are grouped together.

In the Old Town of Troyes are some of the major attractions of the city. In addition to the medieval buildings, you will find churches with magnificent architecture and decoration, museums, craft shops and many restaurants and bars.

As you will notice, there is a lot to see, so get lost in its cobblestone streets.

Visit the Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul Cathedral

Popularly known as the Cathedral of Troyes, this church was built in the ninth century, but was destroyed and rebuilt several times due to various invasions, fires, hurricanes and even because of unstable ground.

Its beauty makes it one of the must-sees in Troyes.

It is Gothic in style and is considered to be unfinished, as it has only one tower.

Troyes Cathedral

Among the details that stand out are its stained glass windows that tell different stories and legends and were made between the thirteenth and nineteenth centuries. It also has an organ that is almost 300 years old and is one of the largest in Europe .

In addition, it is worth spending a few minutes to contemplate its facade and the statues you will see there.

Discover the History of Tools at La Maison de l’Outil et de la Pensée Ouvrière

The Maison de l’Outil et de la Pensée Ouvrière is a unique museum dedicated to the history of tools and the life of manual workers over the centuries.

Here you can admire ancient tools from all over France and learn about the skills and techniques that were used to create everyday objects that we take for granted today.

Museum of the tools of Troyes

In addition, through interactive exhibits and worker testimonials, you will be able to understand the importance of labor rights and the struggle for social justice.

The place itself is quite an attraction; it was a hotel built in 1560. We think it deserves to be on the list of what to see in Troyes because it is a museum with a quite different look that is not found elsewhere.

In addition, you can see that the architecture of the place and its inner courtyard are worth a visit.

Stroll Along the Canal du Trevois

A walk along the banks of the canal is a great opportunity to contemplate some of the historic buildings of the city, but also to enjoy the statues that have been installed in recent years on the most important bridges that cross over the canal.

As you walk, you will cross several bars, large flower beds, and flower pots that are quite beautiful.

what to visit in troyes

Taste the Typical Food of Troyes

The gastronomy of Troyes is a delight for lovers of traditional French food. The city is famous for its succulent dishes that are perfect for the cold weather.

One of the best-known typical dishes is andouillette, a smoked sausage made with pork casings and served with mustard . I’m honestly not a big fan and I know few people who like it. But it is one of the typical dishes you can try.

If you try it, I look forward to your comments at the end of the post.

Another popular dish is boudin blanc, a white sausage made with pork, breadcrumbs and spices.

Restaurants in the center of Troyes

But if you want to try something really special, don’t miss the Tarte Tropézienne, a sweet and spongy cream cake that is a delight to the palate.

In addition, in Troyes, you will find bakeries and pastry shops offering a wide variety of irresistible fresh pieces of bread, croissants, and pastries.

And as Troyes is within the champagne region, you can’t leave the city without tasting a couple of glasses of this traditional drink.

Visit the Church of Saint Pantaleon

The Church of Saint Pantaleon is an architectural jewel to see in Troyes.

Originally built in the 12th century as a synagogue, it suffered a fire and was rebuilt and transformed and modified several times. Today it is considered an impressive example of Gothic architecture.

For some the best things to see in the Church of San Pantaleon are the 16th century stained glass windows that adorn the windows . These stained glass windows tell biblical stories and the lives of the saints.

But for me, the most impressive things about this church are its sculptures and reliefs. In general, I love sculpture, whenever I go to a museum, my favorite section is the sculpture section and this church, really surprised me by the quality of its works. Here are some pictures.

Sculpture church of St Pantaleon Troyes

Museum of Modern Art

The museum was closed for 4 years and many renovations was made, and it was beautiful.

You will find collections of cubists, realist masters, and other styles of painters. In addition, you can see sculptures from Africa and Oceania.

The collection includes over 3,000 works, including some by Matisse, Metzinger, Millet, Picasso, Degas, Rodin and many more .

Sainte Madeleine Church

It is a 12th-century church, making it the oldest religious building in the city and one of the earliest examples of Gothic style in the region.

It was later enlarged and reformed in the 16th century, so it also has a Renaissance style in many parts, such as the apse, the tower and the choir.

Be sure to look at the stone behind the choir, which is fully sculpted and was made in the early 16th century.

The exterior of the church looks austere, but the interior decoration will take your breath away.

Cross the Ruelle des Chats

Rue de Chats translates as Street of Cats, and its name is because it is so narrow that a cat can jump from one sidewalk to the other, in fact in some parts of the street the roofs of one side and the other touch each other.

Cross this alley and walk through the whole area which is one of the most commercial of Troyes, and where there are many restaurants to taste good typical food.

Experience Art and Culture at the Musée des Beaux-Arts

The Saint-Loup Museum has different collections, some dedicated to fine arts, others to archeology and natural history.

As for fine arts, the focus is on paintings by French artists from the 14th to the 19th century. But there are also authors from the rest of Europe. And as far as sculptures are concerned, there are a few rarities from the medieval era that belonged to the cathedral.

The archaeological collection has a little bit of everything, from treasures from ancient Greece and Egypt to local treasures.

In the Natural History rooms, you can see large-scale reproductions of platypus, pangolins, bears, wild boars and much more.

Visit the Abbey of Saint Loup

It is not known exactly when this monastery was built, but it is believed that it was in the 5th century, but unfortunately, most of what was there disappeared, mostly because of the destruction it suffered during the French Revolution.

The only thing that remains is the building that today houses the Fine Arts Museum.

Saint-Loup is a fundamental character in the history of Troyes; it is believed that he saved the city when facing Attila in the 5th century. And it is supposed that the monastery was erected to house his remains.

Vauluisant Museum

The Vauluisant Museum is a local history museum located in the historic center of Troyes. The museum is housed in a historic 15th-century building that has been restored and renovated to house the exhibition.

The museum tells the history of Troyes and the Champagne region through a collection of historical objects and artifacts from Roman times to the present day.

The exhibition is divided into several thematic rooms, each with its own focus and related objects.

Hotel entrance of Vauluisant

Among the highlights of the museum are models of the city of Troyes at different times, a collection of traditional costumes from the Champagne region, a room dedicated to lace making, and a room showing how Champagne is made.

There is also a section dedicated to the famous brand of chocolates from Troyes, Lacour, and another showing how life was lived in the Middle Ages.

Saint Urbain de Troyes Basilica

The Basilica of Saint Urbain is a Gothic church located in the center of Troyes. It is dedicated to Saint Urbain, the patron saint of winegrowers .

It was built between the 13th and 15th centuries and is famous for its impressive rose window and Italian Renaissance style high altar.

The basilica also houses numerous works of art, including a 16th-century polychrome wooden sculpture of St. Urban and a painting of Christ on the Cross from the Flemish school.

There are a handful of amazing bakeries in Troyes you should definitely visit.

I’m crazy about bakeries, and whether we’re talking about patisseries in London or cute bakeries in Paris , I want top notch quality.

After all, I am French and was born into the croissant and macaron culture – I know how to recognize quality.

There are two bakeries in Troyes you should pop by during your trip in town, and the first one is Gérard.

There are fountains all around the piece of art, in front of which you can find tourists taking pictures.

Taking a stroll along the Seine river is one of my favorite things to do in Troyes, especially at sunset and at night during the summer .

You have many of the museums in Troyes located close to the Coeur de Troyes, so that’s really a central piece to pop by.

Troyes - Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Aube

This beautiful town in the Grand Est region charms large numbers of visitors who flock to the historic capital of southern Champagne . Its historic centre is distinguished by its champagne cork shape, a characteristic that Troyes owes to the ancient ramparts that once protected the town.

Stroll between the traditional, magnificent half-timbered buildings whose walls come in a beautiful palette of red, yellow, white... Between these charming dwellings are secret passages and narrow cobbled streets, like the famous Ruelle des Chats, offering delightful urban walks. For instance, we recommend a wander along the promenade by the Seine, where you can admire elegant statues like the Heart of Troyes. The latter stands 3.5 metres tall and is surrounded by imposing water jets. Other ancient sculptures and windows adorning the monuments bear witness to the important legacy of the master glassmakers and sculptors from the School of Troyes. The Gothic Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul, 114 metres long, is illustrious proof of this: it represents all the styles of the Gothic art and is adorned with 182 stained glass windows, or 1,500 m² of magnificent glass from the 13th to 19th centuries, bathing its interior in exceptional light!

The architectural opulence of Troyes' town centre immerses us in its glorious past, particularly that of the textile industries: the old factories clad in red bricks have kept their original façades and have now been converted into housing. This aesthetic combining various materials such as cast iron and glass echoes that of Troyes' covered market, inspired by the Halles de Paris . The outside walls are adorned with columns, each one featuring a cast iron lion's head, and the whole complex is covered by a huge metal roof frame. It is well worth stepping inside this immense building erected in 1876, to stock up on local produce at the market!

The city also has cultural visitor attractions such as the Museum of Tools and Workers' Thought, containing a vast collection of old hand tools. A fine example of the region's craftsmanship! Other places such as the Saint-Loup Museum, dedicated to Fine Arts, archaeology and natural history; the Historical Museum of Troyes and Champagne and the Hosiery Museum, both housed in the elegant Vauluisant mansion; and the Museum of Modern Art in the former episcopal palace make for a wonderful visitor experience.

Finally, to complement this urban tour, enjoy an outing in the surrounding area by travelling along the Greenway. On foot or by bike, it will take you straight to the countryside around Troyes, from the middle of the forested areas to the surrounding lakes, including the famous Lake Orient (Lac d'Orient). Shopaholics and bargain-hunters will enjoy a trip to one of the town's many factory outlet stores.

The Hôtel de Vauluisant and its museums in Troyes

The Hôtel de Vauluisant stands as one of the few stone buildings in Troyes dating back to the mid-16th century. Its name originates from a refuge house once situated on its site, belonging to the Cistercian abbey of Vauluisant in the Yonne department. Before stepping inside to explore the museums, you’ll be greeted by a stunning façade characteristic of Renaissance architecture.

Expanded during the 17th and 18th centuries, the building was acquired by the city of Troyes in 1932 to establish a museum of decorative arts. Today, it houses two distinct museums: the Champenois Art Museum and the Hosiery Museum.

The Champenois Art Museum showcases collections dating from the 16th century, featuring remarkable sculptures of religious art that flourished in Troyes during that era. Meanwhile, the Hosiery Museum pays homage to Troyes’ most emblematic industry: knitwear and fashion. troyes in the sun

Troyes is one of the most alluring, charming medieval French towns I’ve ever visited. It’s big too and its easy to spend at least a couple of days wandering around, in and out of old buildings, museums, churches and discovering the history of this most amazing place.

Ten Great reasons to visit Troyes

You can read more about Troyes here but here in photos are some truly exceptional reasons why Troyes should be on your bucket list (and that doesn’t include the fact that it’s only 1.5 hours from Paris by train)…

1. Troyes Café culture in the most amazing setting

Troyes is uniquely cork-shaped! It wasn’t planned, it just happened that way as the town was laid out long before Champagne corks were popping. There is a huge choice of places to sit and watch the world go by and enjoy the ambience of this friendly, beautiful town.

2. La Ruelle des Chats, Troyes

The Cats Alley is a quaint and picturesque street in Troyes. Why this name? Because the roofs of the houses in this street are so close that cats could easily pass from one side to the other, from one attic to another by simply walking across. The houses in this narrow lean closer, like friends whispering secrets, the higher up they go…

 3. Tour de l’Orfevre

The Goldsmith’s Tower, built in the 16th Century by a goldsmith who needed to add room to his tiny premises!

 4. Romantic Troyes

This is a place to wander, browse, relax at a cafe or in a bar, enjoy a meal in a restaurant, hold hands and feel the romance of the town…

5. Troyes Boulangeries!

The cake shops of Troyes are renowned for their delicious pastries and cakes not to mention bread… And don’t forget to try the local Brioche au Chaource, made with local creamy Chaource cheese.

 6. Gastronomy

However you like your restaurants – traditional, elegant, refined, quirky, modern, there’s a massive choice in Troyes… the art of living and great cuisine blend well here. Local cuisine includes the Troyes andouillette, invented many centuries ago, this famous hand made sausage was enjoyed by Louis XIV and Napoleon.

 7. Brioche of Troyes

They’re famous for their brioche here and no wonder, all shapes and sizes but always delicious!

8. Real life Troyes

Although the architecture is ancient, this is no museum town, real life is here, market days, festivals, lots of shops, in fact one of the most well-known factory outlets is close by, favoured by Parisians who want to buy style but at a realistic price…

9. Cultural Troyes

Museums and churches galore, if you are a culture vulture Troyes will certainly push all the right buttons for you! The Vauluisant Museum dating back to the 16th Century is particularly charming.

The Museum of Modern Art (MAM) is a real collectors’ museum. After several years of renovation, the presentation of the collections has been completely redesigned to provide a new backdrop for the works of the Pierre and Denise Lévy National Collections. This is an opportunity to discover paintings, sculptures and works of art, from the realism of the 1850s to the abstract works of the 1950s. The itinerary of the permanent exhibition has been thought out chronologically; it will allow you to admire works by great artists such as Gustave Courbet, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, André Derain or Robert Delaunay.

To reinforce this pact, on June 2, Henry V married Catherine de Valois, daughter of King Charles VI of France in the church of Saint-Jean-au-Marché. As a result, the king of England became the heir to the crown instead of Charles VII. Following Henry V and Charles VI’s deaths, Charles VII inherited the throne, returning the crown to the French royal family. In July 1429, he stayed in Troyes with Joan of Arc, who had sworn to “kick the English out of France”.

Petawawa Theatre prepares to reopen May 17

Many thought they had seen the final curtain call at Troyes Cinema, located on Garrison Petawawa, when the movie theatre closed in 2022.

The previous manager retired, leaving the big screen on base blank for nearly two years.

But the only remaining indoor movie theatre between Renfrew and North Bay is set to reopen May 17.

Oakville-based company Film.ca has taken over management of the military-owned building.

"My son Dylan recently joined the Armed Forces and was stationed at CFB Petawawa,” Jeff Knoll, CEO of Film.ca tells CTV News Ottawa.

“While we were visiting him at his new home, we saw that the movie theater had actually closed shortly after they moved in, and recognized what an important feature was to that community."

The roughly 300-seat theatre is currently under renovations for a much needed facelift, but Knoll says there was too much excitement about the reopening.

"The moment we mentioned that we're reopening the outreach and the outcry of excitement from the community was palpable. So, we wanted to get open as quickly as possible,” Knoll said.

what to visit in troyes

Petawawa resident Christina Knot-Allen says her children went to the last movie before it closed.

"We have an 11-year-old and a 17-year-old. So, they're excited to be able to go back and watch movies,” she said.

Fellow local resident Kelsie Young says she grew up on base in Petawawa and recalls the fond memories of time spent at Troyes Cinema and the theatrics put on by the previous manager.

"It was always a show, he used to do handstands. I forgot about that, it was amazing,” said Young.

"We live just down the street, so we can't wait to just be able to walk and go see a movie and walk home."

CFB Petawawa Commander Col. Jason Guiney says having the theatre reopen on base will be a moral boost to soldiers and provides more opportunities for socialization.

"First and foremost, these services are for soldiers,” said Guiney.

“But we encourage our soldiers to bring their friends and families, (and) to bring their friends as well."

On social media, Troyes Cinema says the theatre will be open to everyone from the public.

what to visit in troyes

“I wanted to be able to use my expertise to improve quality of life on the base,” said Knoll.

“I think the biggest piece for us was really trying to contribute to our forces and to the surrounding communities.”
