2.10 The Dauphin

This week, the Enterprise is once again assigned the task of being a glorified taxi for an ambassador who does nothing but cause trouble for the rest of the crew. Yep, that’s right, it’s Stock Plot #5, another great idea from the people who brought you such infinitely reusable story structures as “the transporter malfunctions”, “the holodeck malfunctions” and “Lwaxana Troi malfunctions”.

Anyway, Picard welcomes on board Salia, the future leader of the war-torn planet Daled IV, and her aging, over-protective guardian Anya. While touring the ship, the delegation bumps into Wesley Crusher, who is doing the important business of carrying a single magnet around. Salia recognises the magnet from the textbooks she’s read (yep, honestly) and because of the excessively sheltered life she’s led, falls immediately in love with Wesley, who is similarly head over heels. Oh good, it’s a Wesley episode, said absolutely no-one ever.

Ad – content continues below

After the distracted Wesley bungles his work in Engineering, La Forge suggests he goes and talks to Salia. Unsure what to say, he asks advice of various crew members, none of whom have anything useful to say. Frustrated, he decides to just go and be himself (terrible advice, when you’re him) and when he reaches her quarters, she invites him in for replicated coffee. It’s fair to say they hit it off.

Meanwhile, Anya is touring the ship and complaining that everything is a potential death trap. Just like those clowns in Brussels, right guys? Right? Is this thing on? Anyway, the whole tour is cut short when Anya demands that an ill and potentially contagious patient in sickbay is put to death to ensure Salia isn’t harmed. To demonstrate how serious she is about this, she turns into a giant furry ape thing that even Toho would’ve rejected for looking unrealistic. Picard is outraged and talks her down, confining her to the pair’s quarters along with Salia.

Of course, Salia isn’t in her quarters. She’s in the holodeck with Wesley while he’s telling her about all the amazing places he’s visited while on his gap yah before he goes to Starfleet Academy. The pair head to ten-forward where Wesley tries to cause an interstellar incident by convincing her to quit her job as head of a planet she hasn’t yet visited, presumably reasoning that his happiness is more important than the wars she’ll stop by unifying the planet’s warring factions. Annoyed and confused, she runs out of Ten-Forward crying and goes back to Anya.

Picard instructs Wesley not to meet Salia again, but she sneaks into his quarters and gives him the “show me more of this earth custom you call kissing” routine. They’ve barely begun the first quarter of tonsil-hockey before Anya turns up and tries to separate the pair by turning into that giant ape-thingy (a bucket of water would’ve done the trick, really.) Salia tells Wesley to stand back, and reveals that she too is a shape-shifting Allasomorph. They sort of roar at each other, before turning back into humans. Probably because the costumes aren’t good enough to have any kind of actual fight in.

Finally, the Enterprise has reached its destination. Wesley gets angry at Salia for hiding her true nature, but eventually the two reconcile and he sees her off to the planet. Before beaming down, she transforms into her true form: a glowing tube of energy. Wesley is enthralled but probably aware, deep down, that it would be difficult to form a lasting relationship with a tube of light. After Salia has gone, Guinan gives Wesley a pep talk that essentially amounts to “stop crying, mate, we’ve all been there.” She is indeed wise.

TNG WTF: Few people would accuse TNG of being too ambitious with its prosthetics over the years. In fact, for the most part “alien” tends to mean “human with a weird nose/forehead/ears”. But every so often they decide to push the boundaries, and that reminds us why they do the weird nose thing instead. The various forms the Allasomorph characters take contain some of the worst alien costumes TNG has done since the Anticans and Selay delegates from Lonely Among Us . They’re enough to make George Lucas say “no, that’s too stupid”.

TNG LOL: Considering how bland TNG was in its early days, it’s nice to see that the show’s found a sense of humour by this point. Most of the laughs are intentional, whether it’s Worf’s description of Klingon courting (“Men do not roar. Women roar. Then they hurl heavy objects…”) while Riker demonstrating his chat-up techniques on Guinan is funny twice over: once because it’s hilariously over-the-top, and again because Whoopi Goldberg breaks character for a moment at the end when Wesley tries to halt the display (“Shut up kid! Tell me more about my eyes…”)

Time Until Meeting: No meetings. Although I’ll let it off because the episode is essentially about a diplomatic issue, meaning there’s plenty of bureaucracy.

Captain’s Log: As episodes go, it’s bland and inoffensive, although by the time you’ve reached the third act things are starting to feel a bit repetitive. The problem is that the script doesn’t really know what its central conflict is. They try to play up the idea of Salia as someone bound by her duty, but ultimately there’s no drama there because at no point does it seem as though she’s going to abandon her fate. Meanwhile, Anya is so over-the-top in being “protective” that she seems more like a dangerous psychopath. And then for the first half of the episode they’re sort of playing with the mystery of who/what Anya really is, but they make only the barest gestures towards that storyline before the answer is revealed. It’s all over the place, and comes over as shallow and directionless as a result.

On the other hand, the sequence of Wesley asking for romantic advice from Data/Worf/Riker is brilliant, and Guinan’s speech about falling in love at the end is nice and philosophical. But let’s face it, this episode is The Princess Diaries In Space, and who wants to see that (okay, wait, bad example. I should’ve said who wants to see that with Wesley Crusher .)

Watch or Skip? Realistically, you can skip it. There are a few good laughs, but ultimately it’s a Wesley episode. If you want to see a Wesley romance, they do a similar story better with Ashley Judd in season five.

I haven't rewatched the episode yet and will post a more cogent comment later, but that Taylor Swift exchange is hilarious, Mark. :)

Love the Taylor Swift exchange :) The only reason for this episode to exist is Klingon dating and Riker and Guinan flirting. Totally worth it.

Worf's Klingon mating rituals quote is the only memorable thing about this episode. It is one of my two favorite Worf quotes of all time, the other being "I must protest, I am NOT a merry man." I used to quote both of these sayings in a faux Worf voice (similar to what several of my friends did with "Holy Grail" quotes).

The Riker-Guinan exchange give me life. The Ensign Gibson sequence above makes me laugh. dac

Happy to see you guys are enjoying my bonkers British sense of humour.

I've rewatched it now and I have to agree with everyone that Worf's description of Klingon mating rituals and the Riker/Guinan flirt-off were definitely the highlights of the episode. Poor Wil Wheaton. Why did they do this to him?

who played salia star trek

That Taylor Swift bit was genuine LOL material Mark, well done! Keeping the bad monster to a minimum sounds somewhat familiar... Something I wish classic Who did more often! And as has previously been said, Worf describing the Klingon mating ritual and Guinan and Riker's flirt-off were the best parts of this one.

We love comments! We moderate because of spam and trolls, but don't let that stop you! It’s never too late to comment on an old show, but please don’t spoil future episodes for newbies.

Original air date: February 20, 1989

The Enterprise arrives at a hostile desert planet to pick up Salia, a sixteen-year-old girl who is destined to bring peace to Daled IV. As she's being led through the ship, she encounters Wesley, and the two fall in Love at First Sight . The rest of the crew encourage Wesley to pursue her, but Salia's overprotective governess Anya complicates the issue.

While Anya is away, Salia invites Wesley in her room, and the pair spend the day eating chocolate and touring the galaxy in the holodeck. Meanwhile, Anya alarms the crew with her all-consuming obsession with protecting Salia from any harm. She demands that Dr. Pulaski kill a patient to avoid the chance of him infecting Salia. When Pulaski refuses, Anya transforms into a monstrous shape and brawls with Worf before Picard arrives to deescalate the situation.

Salia experiences a crisis between her responsibility to save Daled IV from eternal war and her desire to live her own life. Wesley encourages her to pursue her own desires and remain on the ship with him. After sneaking away from Anya, she and Wesley share a kiss. However, Anya interrupts them and threatens Wesley in her monstrous shape. Salia transforms into a similar shape to protect Wesley, revealing that she is also a shapechanger. Picard orders that their passengers will spend the rest of the journey behind a forcefield to avoid any further incidents.

Tropes specific to this episode include:

  • A Form You Are Comfortable With : "So you took this form for our benefit? That's why you wanted to know what species we are."
  • Bilingual Dialogue : Between Salia and Anya when the latter is in her mutant-Ewok form.
  • The Chains of Commanding : Salia feels like she's being strangled by these.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them : Salia is the equivalent of a 16-year-old girl who will soon take command of an entire planet.
  • Cultural Posturing : Anya constantly complains that the Enterprise is so primitive. Which is odd, since everything else about the situation makes it pretty obvious that her race is massively less advanced; the whole plot is about the Enterprise stepping in because they don't have any of their own ships that can ferry passengers from their colony in a reasonable time frame.
  • Distracted by the Sexy : After seeing Salia for the first time , Wesley spends the next few scenes in a daze and unable to focus on his work. Geordi gives him the rest of the day off so he can get to know her.
  • Energy Being : Anya and Salia's Shapeshifter Default Form is a vaguely humanoid silhouette of shifting white and purple light.
  • Gratuitous French : The title of the episode should actually be "The Dauphine ", since "dauphin" is the masculine form of the word rather than the feminine. (The French dub is titled "La Dauphine" for exactly this reason.)
  • If You Won't, I Will : Anya orders Pulaski to kill a patient with the flu because he might pose a small chance of infecting Salia. When Pulaski (naturally) refuses, Anya says this just before shapeshifting into her mutant-Wookiee form.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold : Anya may seem overly protective of Salia, but she really cares for her.
  • Knight Templar Parent : Anya, although not Salia's real parent, looks after her like one. This includes trying to murder anything that could technically pose a threat to her or her mission, from a sick patient to a lovestruck teenage boy like Wesley.
  • Literal Metaphor : Data in the following lines: Data : What puzzles me, Captain, is how she is expected to bring peace to Daled Four. Its inhabitants have been fighting throughout their recorded history. Picard : What do we know about the cause of these wars? Data : Only that it is the difference between night and day. Riker : Data, you used a colloquialism . Data : Did I? What I meant, sir, is that Daled Four rotates only once per revolution . Therefore one side is constantly dark, and the other side constantly light. One might surmise that the two hemispheres have developed disparate cultures, which is a major cause of most wars.
  • Love Across Battlelines : Salia's parents were the leaders of the rival factions on her planet, which is why she is destined to be the one to unite them.
  • Mama Bear : Anya is very protective of Salia, and jumps to transforming into her mutant-Wookiee form whenever she thinks she might be in danger.
  • Matron Chaperone : Anya is Salia's chaperone, singlemindedly devoted to protecting Salia from anything (including romance) that could put her at risk, and in public Anya usually takes the form of a conservatively dressed older woman.
  • The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body : Salia assures Wesley that while she's in a human form, she experiences human emotions, including genuine attraction to him.
  • Oh, Crap! : Wesley when Anya shows up in his quarters in monster form. And again when Salia morphs.
  • Rebellious Princess : Salia has been raised from birth to be her world's leader, and has never been given any real choices in life; this isn't likely to change once she takes up her new position, as trying to serve as a uniting leader on a war-torn planet will almost certainly be a full-time job. For all this, though, she's still a teenage girl who gets her first taste of life outside her sheltered existence, which is so thrilling for her that she's sorely tempted to abandon her duties; falling in love with an outsider — Wesley — only makes this worse. Despite all this, she does ultimately decide that she has a responsibility to her people, and heads off to become Daled IV's leader.
  • The Reveal : Anya is a shapechanger! And so is Salia!
  • Second-Act Breakup : Wesley is repulsed by the late revelation that Salia is a shapechanger, believing that her whole identity thus far has been a lie. Salia insists that her feelings for Wesley are genuine and her current form is as real as any other. Wesley has changed his mind by the next scene.
  • Shapeshifter Default Form : Wesley goes to see Salia as she's about to beam off the Enterprise and she tells him that she has to assume her real form before transporting and asks him to leave because she'd prefer to him remember her as she was. He, however, chooses to remain behind and see her true form, which turns out to be a pillar of shimmering light in vaguely humanoid form.
  • Shapeshifter Showdown : Between Salia and Anya in Wesley's quarters.
  • Shapeshifting : Both Salia and Anya have this ability.
  • Shipper on Deck : Guinan supports Wesley's courtship of Salia.
  • Tidally Locked Planet : Daled IV. One distinct culture developed on the day side and a different one on the night side. Their differences led to a world war that the Enterprise is trying to put an end to. As a daughter of parents from both sides, Salia is expected to bridge the gap.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend : Salia briefly prepares to protect Wesley from Anya by transforming into another ferocious monster.
  • Was It All a Lie? : Wesley, at the end, believing that Salia has just been playing at being humanoid and made him a part of that game. She firmly insists that, no, none of it was— shapeshifter or no, she is still a young woman with the same emotions as a humanoid, and her feelings for him were genuine.
  • Worthy Opponent : Worf and Anya acknowledge each other as this at the end, in contrast to earlier where each insists that the other wouldn't be a match for them.

Faith Salie Shares Her Deep Space Nine Memories

The actress and journalist reflects on her time in the Jack Pack

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Faith Salie

StarTrek.com | Sharon Schuster

The trading card lies somewhere in the apartment. The memories are easier to resurrect. Though her stint on Deep Space Nine was brief, as Sarina Douglas, the youngest member of the genetically engineered “Jack Pack,” Faith Salie flexed her singing abilities, was wooed by Dr. Bashir, and got beamed up—an iconic pop culture moment few can claim.

“I’ll drop that anytime,” says Salie, a Harvard graduate and Rhodes Scholar.

There’s a good reason she embraces her time on DS9. “The Jack Pack” — the quartet of institutionalized geniuses beamed up for observation played by Salie, Tim Ransom, Michael Keenan, and Hilary Shepard — made memorable appearances in two episodes: “Statistical Probabilities,” where Jack and the gang’s enthusiasm for data analysis leads to a near catastrophe, and “Chrysalis,” where Dr. Bashir brings the sheltered Sarina to life and nearly finds a soul mate.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine -

StarTrek.com

Salie has thrived in a different career since departing the U.S.S. Defiant . She is best known as a journalist/storyteller, thanks to CBS Sunday Morning . She’s also a fixture on the NPR mainstay Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me . This fall, Salie will star in an off-Broadway one-woman show, Approval Junkie , based on her terrific 2016 collection of personal essays. Despite her fondness for DS9, Salie, now 50, hadn’t seen the episodes in nearly 25 years, but she did for this interview. Salie received a potent reminder of a bittersweet period in her life personally and professionally—and what she has to look forward to now .

Faith Salie: I had not watched these episodes — one of them in 24 years and one of them in 23 years, because there's a pain attached to it.

StarTrek.com: What pain is there?

FS: And pride. I love that I got to play this amazing character and be part of this iconic series.

I was cast in “Statistical Probabilities” in the summer of ‘97 and my mother was dying. So when I was back in LA to film it, I was thrilled. It was the biggest part I had gotten since I had moved to LA after grad school. But it was a chunk of time I was away from her while she was dying. She was so happy because Deep Space Nine was a very well-received television show. It was the first time I learned what single card meant. My agent was very proud to tell me that he got me single card credit, so it’s only my name on screen. And because my mom was dying and I hoped she would see this episode, I put my middle initial [C]—as my credit. My middle initial is her maiden name. And it aired a month after she died. I was so sad that she never got to see it.

She did die happy. Her two older sons were married or as good as married, like my brother and his partner at the time. I didn't have anybody. I had just moved to LA. I know it made her very happy to think that, “Oh, my daughter's career has launched with this role.” That’s part of it. And then with “Chrysalis,” my wasband [ Salie’s term for her ex-husband ] saw that episode and said that he was watching it at home recovering from coming out of chemo, and I thought I was so beautiful. He thought, I'm going to marry that girl.

I have to tell you another amazing connection is that Tim Ransom, he and I fell in love in 2006. So I moved to New York, I'm separated from my wasband and Tim's there. We fell in love and lived together for half a year. He was the magic relationship that shifted me into knowing that I could be lovable again after such a horrible separation. Isn’t that crazy?

That’s a real swirl of emotions associated with these episodes.

FS: This is like therapy. It makes me realize, OK, I'm not crazy for not having watched these in a long time. When you line it up that way, these are a lot to watch. And if you want to add to that list, reckoning with getting older and looking older and missing desperately — I mean, desperately missing — acting and singing. So much so that when I watch it… I love that song and I loved singing it. It was so gratifying.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine -

Why do you think The Jack Pack has endured?

FS: They're so human and fallible and id-ish, right? To have really funny, fallible people be so smart, it's so refreshing and lovable. What was so interesting about [my] role was that there was no subtext. When you're an actor, you're always looking for what's underneath. That's what they need to play. It's not the lines, but the feelings underneath the lines and Sarina was so cool to play because there was zero subtext. I love the scene at the table at the bar and she says to Miles and Bashir, “Why are you two pretending that you're not best friends?”  She's so childlike. It’s challenging to have a scene that is romantic and not be flirting. The scenes ended up being romantic, but I'm supposed to be bewildered and guileless. It was really fun to have that challenge. I loved it.

What was it like working with the pack? You got along famously with Tim.

FS: Now that I know him better, I think he was anxious about the role. Hilary was kind. She had just had a baby. I remember the nanny bringing her her baby. I was the kid. Tim and Hilary were in their thirties. Michael was in his fifties. Michael and I got along great. When I moved into a new apartment, he had furniture he let me use for years. Anson [Williams, the director of “Statistical Probabilities”] was just like a kid, just such positive energy. He was the first person I ever knew who drank wheatgrass. He was always like, “Oh everybody, you've got to drink wheatgrass,” and I was like, well, maybe I do, because Potsie has got some youth. This man is joyful and positive and looks great. There was a lot of laughing. It was just so fun.

It was just sort of fun to make fun of how weird I was. I was in on the joke, too. They'd say cut, I'd be like, “Can I stop walking around the room with a vacant look on my face?” It was a very strange role to play. I had this pivotal scene where I untied Bashir, and that's where my lines were. I had been waiting the whole time to fill in that scene. I filmed it. It was intense. I just remember feeling so much anxiety about that scene because it was finally my time to shine. I felt good about it after we filmed it. And then it comes [out on] November 24, 1997. It was Thanksgiving night. My mom has been dead for a month. My brothers and my father and their spouses and I are all in Florida at my dad's house. It gets to that scene and I'm just like, “This is where my lines are and then they cut them! Whaaattt!” Of course, if you had told me that night, “Look, in a year you're going to have a whole episode about you and an aria” I would have been a little less disappointed, but I was kind of flabbergasted. [ Laughs ]

I have to ask about the do-re-mi scene. How did that work?

FS: We all sang. Hilary had a band. She was quite the rock and roll singer. Michael's just old school, could do anything. Tim can sing, but doesn't feel confident about it. So he was really annoyed. He was not having it. He was so annoyed that he had to do it and he was the weakest link. And, of course, I'm in my glory. I was having the best time. I had made this horrible decision not to go to New York to do musical theater. I made this terrible, life-altering decision to move to LA to do film and TV. So I was like, oh my gosh, this is my chance to sing and do TV. And they actually doubled up my voice. So they had my voice on top of my voice to make it a stronger and richer sound. And they dubbed Tim — that that was not his voice.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine -

You said you miss acting, even though it hasn't gotten you the success compared to what you do now.

FS: Most people who know me are surprised that I sang and danced or was on Star Trek . I was a professional kid actor. I acted my way through college and grad school. There was a long time where I felt like I was still pretending to be what people call a journalist and a host. Now, I feel like that's legitimately me. It’s in my bag of tricks. When I got to do my one-woman show two years ago, it felt like returning to myself. I felt whole. That sounds very grand, but I felt whole. There has been nothing more satisfying professionally than that, even though I love what I do. I love helping people tell stories. I love telling stories for The Moth , but the fact that I get to return to acting even for one month at the end of this year — I’m so excited.

I've gotten to 50. If I'm lucky, I'm in the middle of my life. I have so much happening professionally and personally that you really get to a point you're like, what is worth my time and what fills my soul. And I know that I need to put acting back into the recipe of what makes up me.

Star Trek: Discovery's Mary Wiseman On Tilly's Season 5 Arc & Burnham Friendship

  • Tilly's expertise is crucial for Discovery's mission to find an ancient treasure with life-creating power.
  • Mary Wiseman reflected on filming at Pinewood Studios and in stunning locations like Ontario and Iceland.
  • Tilly and Burnham share a strong friendship on and off screen, mirroring Mary's real-life bond with Sonequa Martin-Green.

Mary Wiseman is wrapping up her five-season journey on Star Trek: Discovery , but her character, Lt. Sylvia Tilly, is as important to the show as ever.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Tilly is called away from her role as an instructor at Starfleet Academy by her best friend, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green). Tilly's expertise is needed for Discovery's intergalactic hunt for the ancient treasure of the Progenitors , which has the power to create life, itself.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Screen Rant spoke to Mary Wiseman about the end of Lt. Sylvia Tilly's story in Star Trek: Discovery , her memories of shooting on location in Ontario and Iceland, and Tilly's bond with Michael Burnham echoing Mary's real-life friendship with Sonequa Martin-Green.

Mary Wiseman Is Happy With Star Trek: Discovery Season 5's Coda & Tilly's Ending

Screen Rant: Hi Mary, so nice to speak to you again. Pinewood Studios today just announced that the stage you filmed Discovery in was renamed the Star Trek Stage . What was it like working there?

Mary Wiseman: That is so sweet! Oh, my gosh, it was great. That was home for five seasons worth of work. And the people are so nice. It's such a nice studio. I'm going to miss the sweetheart roses and all the great people who work there. I missed Toronto already. Yeah, that's so cool that they named the stage after us. How sweet.

I'm such a big Tilly fan. And one of the things I love about Tilly is her versatility. Because she's at home on the bridge. She's at home in engineering. She can go on away missions, like this week. And she also has a life outside the ship in Starfleet Academy. Tilly is everywhere you want to be.

Mary Wiseman: Right! I love that too. It's been fun getting to jump around the ship and all the different little places. And then, having an engineering background, you really get to get into a lot of different spaces. You can go to med bay, you can end up really anywhere.

I'd love to jump ahead to the finale. You guys filmed a coda to wrap up Discovery . Have you seen it? And is it as emotional as Sonequa and Doug have said it is?

Mary Wiseman: I haven't seen it. I prefer to watch the show in real time. But I've read it. And I don't know. I'm saving that moment for when it's really over. But it's beautiful. I think they did a really nice job wrapping it up. And it feels very congruous with the rest of the season and the rest of the episode that it's a part of. So I'm pleased as punch, and I'm girding myself for when I actually watch it.

And you're happy with how Tilly's Star Trek: Discovery story is wrapped up?

Mary Wiseman: Yeah, for sure. I think there's a beautiful message in the arc that she's had about finding what gives your life value for you. And finding out what you have to offer the world and then doing that.

Mary Wiseman's Memories Of Filming Star Trek: Discovery On Location

Let's talk a little bit about this week's episode, "Whistlespeak." Tilly and Burnham go on an away mission together to a new planet. It's such a classic Star Trek story, meeting new aliens and a new culture. What was that like for you to play, to get off the ship and actually have all these new cast members and extras and everything in costume?

Mary Wiseman: So fun. I love getting the alien treatment. Getting to finally walk into the prosthetics trailer was awesome. And yeah, getting to go shoot on location. Nan, I love a forest, and getting to shoot in that forest was so stunningly beautiful, moody and evocative. And, I mean, I just had an absolute blast. It was an awesome filming experience.

I was wondering if you were in a real forest. Not a soundstage made up like a forest with the AR wall.

Mary Wiseman: No, it's gorgeous, gorgeous forest in Ontario. It's really really lovely.

And you've shot in Iceland, right? Tilly and Saru went on an away mission in season 3, and you got to go to a glacier. What was that like?

Mary Wiseman: Oh my gosh, so cool. Iceland is just stunning. It is so otherworldly, because there's so many different biomes there and it's so influenced by volcanic activity. It's just a place I've never seen before and then getting to shoot there, being on the black sands of Vik and walking beside this beautiful black glacier. Yeah, it was breathtaking. And I spent a lot of time really worried about Doug Jones falling over.

Oh my god. Yeah, that's right. Doug was in prosthetics. He wasn't wearing the boots, though, was he?

Mary Wiseman: Yeah, he was. He's amazing. He's amazing.

Tilly's Friendship With Burnham & Possible Starfleet Academy Future

Tilly and Burnham have one of the all-time great Star Trek friendships. This is a franchise defined by friendship, starting with Kirk and Spock. Tilly and Burnham are such a wonderful pair of female characters who are genuine friends and peers, even with their different ranks. Can you talk a little bit about Tilly and Michael's friendship, and is it the same or different from your friendship with Sonequa?

Mary Wiseman: There are a lot of similarities, I think, because I look up to Sonequa a lot, even though we're like the same age. Tilly admires Burnham a lot and and values her a lot. So there's a lot of correlation there. And I think that they make each other laugh, and Sonequa and I certainly make each other laugh in real life. So all of that stuff about their friendship has been historically incredibly easy to play.

Last question before I let you go: Is there anything you want to say about the possibility of Tilly appearing in the next show, Starfleet Academy ?

Mary Wiseman: I don't know. I don't know.

Here’s the official announcement:

Pinewood Toronto Studios, part of the Pinewood Group, have named one of their sound stages “The Star Trek Stage” to celebrate one of the franchise’s long-running filming locations. The announcement coincides with the release of the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery, produced by CBS Studios and currently streaming on Paramount+ in the US and Canada.   “The Star Trek Stage” is an 18,000 sq foot stage at Pinewood Toronto Studios and was officially renamed whilst the cast and crew were filming the final scenes of the final season. Star Trek: Discovery has been based at the Studios in downtown Toronto since January 2017. The Stage was used to house the Ready Room and International Federation HQ. The production also utilised the 45,900 sq foot Mega Stage and Stage 7, 9 and 12 as well as production facilities and workshops.   “Pinewood Toronto Studios has become a second home for our Star Trek family, and we’re grateful that they’ve named a stage in honor of the franchise,” said Alex Kurtzman, Executive Producer at the helm of the Star Trek series. “In addition to the amazing stage space, we’ve benefitted from working with the talented artists in front of the camera and behind the scenes and look forward to our partnership in Toronto on future series.”   Sarah Farrell, General Manager of Pinewood Toronto Studios, said, “We are so delighted to have hosted Star Trek: Discovery over 5 seasons and the recently wrapped Star Trek: Section 31 movie event and to celebrate our longstanding relationship with the franchise with our own Star Trek Stage. We look forward to welcoming many more productions to come.”

It’s one of five stages used during Star Trek: Discovery’s five seasons on the Pinewood lot, one of which is considered the studio’s “Mega Stage” — a 45,900 square foot soundstage that will serve as the central hub of the upcoming  Starfleet Academy series set to begin filming later this year.

Wesley Crusher

  • View history

Lieutenant junior grade Wesley R. Crusher was the gifted son of Starfleet officers Lieutenant Commander Jack R. Crusher and Doctor Beverly Crusher and half-brother of Jack Crusher . He spent several years aboard the USS Enterprise -D and three years at Starfleet Academy . His Starfleet career, already turned sour by a scandal at the Academy, was cut short when he renounced ties with the UFP and became a protégé of the transdimensional Tau Alphan known as The Traveler . ( TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ", " Final Mission ", " The First Duty ", " Rascals ", " Journey's End ")

Crusher apparently eventually returned to Starfleet and, by 2379 , may have become a full-fledged officer, holding the rank of lieutenant junior grade. ( Star Trek Nemesis ) If so, he eventually resumed his travels by 2401 , though he no longer used the name Wesley Crusher. ( PIC : " Farewell ").

Early life [ ]

Even as early as ten weeks old, baby Wesley resembled his mother and his father's parents , at least in Jack's opinion. ( TNG : " Family ")

When Wesley was five years old in 2353 , his father, Jack R. Crusher, was killed during an away mission while serving on board the USS Stargazer under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard . Picard was forced to choose between saving another team member or Crusher, his personal friend, and Crusher ended up losing his life. Wesley would remember the look in the captain's eyes when he broke the news to Wesley and his mother. For some time, Wesley would remain angry at Picard for surviving when his father did not, although this faded as he got older. ( TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ", " The Bonding ", " True Q ", " Attached ") In time he came to understand the situation that Picard and his father were in, but unknowingly developed a fear of being faced with the same dilemma that Picard had to deal with. ( TNG : " Coming of Age ")

The Enterprise -D [ ]

Ten years later, fifteen-year-old Wesley found himself living aboard the starship USS Enterprise -D when his mother, Doctor Beverly Crusher became Captain Picard's chief medical officer aboard the ship. ( TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ")

Wesley often was a challenge and sore sight in the captain's eyes, even if he was the son of a good friend, because of the captain's disdain for children, although Wesley's astuteness and knowledge of engineering , as well as top grades on scientific examinations continuously impressed Picard. These same characteristics were, in part, the cause of Wesley suffering from loneliness early on, as his peers were intimidated by his bright mind – he also showed a tendency to take his duties almost too seriously.

Wesley excelled at his studies aboard the vessel and, through primary school , found himself participating in work-study programs alongside many of the Enterprise 's senior officers .

When in 2364 the crew of the Enterprise became intoxicated with polywater and exhibited unusual manic behavior, Wesley, who had also became intoxicated, took control of engineering , appointing himself acting captain Wesley Crusher and barricading himself in engineering, watching as Jim Shimoda pulled out most of the isolinear chips that controlled the navigational system of the ship. This put the Enterprise in danger when a stellar core fragment was hurtling in their direction. However, the incident did allow Wesley to display his genius, having him save the ship by solving a problem in his head that would take anyone else weeks to figure out, including the Chief Engineer, by proposing that they turn the starship's tractor beam into a repulsor beam to push away the Enterprise . This move gave the Enterprise the extra time needed for Data to finish the repairs so the ship could move to safety. ( TNG : " The Naked Now ")

During a visit to the planet Rubicun III , Wesley accidentally disturbed the plants while playing--and, as punishment, was sentenced to death. Even though Picard was shocked at the sentence the inhabitants of the planet, the Edo , had imposed on Wesley, he nonetheless decided to respect their laws by not immediately beaming away "the Wesley boy". Picard discovered that the Edo were provided for by a mysterious object in their planet's orbit . After much inner struggle and extensive negotiations with the Edo that proved unfruitful, Picard decided that in this case he had no choice but to violate the Prime Directive to save Wesley's life. Prepared to battle the entity in space if necessary and over the Edo's objection, he attempted to beam Wesley to safety to find the Edo God was preventing it. However knowing they could hear him, Picard successfully argued that the sentence was unjust and laws with no leeway or exceptions was an injustice in itself. The entities accepted the argument by allowing the beam-out. ( TNG : " Justice ")

Wesley Crusher, age 25

Wesley as he would appear at age 25, according to Riker with the power of Q

Later that year, Wesley was given his wish of being an adult who was taken seriously after Commander William T. Riker was given the power of the Q , but he rejected the change, stating that he wanted to get there on his own. ( TNG : " Hide And Q ")

In the attempt by Lore to hijack the Enterprise , it was Wesley who discovered that Lore was impersonating Data. In the beginning no one believed Wesley and he was sent off the bridge for making the accusation, but it turned out that Wesley had been in fact correct about Lore all along. ( TNG : " Datalore ")

When the Aldeans kidnapped the children on the Enterprise as they were unable to procreate, Wesley led the children in an act of defiance, encouraging them to not cooperate with the Aldeans so they would be forced to let them go back. After the Enterprise offered to cure the Aldeans, the children were released. ( TNG : " When The Bough Breaks ")

The Traveler [ ]

Wesley Crusher, late 2364

Crusher as an acting ensign

In 2364 , Wesley befriended The Traveler when he accompanied Kosinski aboard the Enterprise -D to assist with warp drive efficiency upgrade experiments. When the ship was transported millions of light years to the galaxy known as M-33 , Wesley assisted The Traveler in returning the ship to their own galaxy . It was just before the Enterprise 's return to its original position that The Traveler informed Captain Picard of Wesley's prodigious abilities, telling him that Wesley was a genius with the intricacies of time, energy and propulsion and that those talents needed to be encouraged. However, he emphasized that neither Wesley nor his mother should ever be told any of this, as it was important that the boy cultivate those abilities naturally without interference.

Captain Picard, who was also very impressed with Wesley's contributions during that mission, granted him the field commission of acting ensign "for outstanding performance in the best Starfleet tradition" on stardate 41263.4. He told Wesley that whether that rank became permanent depended on him. He also instructed Commander William T. Riker to create a duty schedule that was heavy on study in order for him to learn the ship – every operation, every function – so he would be ready for the Starfleet Academy entrance exam . ( TNG : " Where No One Has Gone Before ")

Acting ensign [ ]

Wesley Crusher, 2365

Crusher in 2365

Late in 2364, Wesley took the entrance exam, but did not pass. However, his spirits were lifted when Picard told him that he too had failed the exam the first time. ( TNG : " Datalore ", " Coming of Age ")

In 2365 , Crusher met Salia , a young girl who was to be the ruler of Daled IV . Salia was tended to by Anya , an allasomorph who could change shapes. She threatened Wesley but was stopped by Salia. Although she, too, was smitten with Wesley, she chose to do her duty and left the Enterprise . ( TNG : " The Dauphin ")

In 2365 , William Riker assigned Wesley command of a science team with the mission of investigating Selcundi Drema . Wesley chose Prixus , Alans , Hildebrant , and Davies to serve on his team. ( TNG : " Pen Pals ")

One of Wesley's experiments went wrong and almost destroyed the Enterprise . He had allowed nanites , small robots , to work together in an attempt to improve their efficiency, but they later accidentally escaped containment and were replicating and becoming sentient . After a visiting scientist on board Enterprise , Dr. Paul Stubbs , tried to kill them because they had interfered with an experiment that was his life's work, they attacked the ship. Data allowed them to enter his body in order to speak through him, and a solution was found. ( TNG : " Evolution ")

Wesley Crusher, 2366

Promoted to full ensign

Wesley successfully completed his written exams for Starfleet Academy in 2366 but did not complete his oral exams that year when he failed to board the USS Bradbury for the journey to Earth . When reviewing his service record, Captain Picard felt that Wesley's service made him an acting ensign in name only, and promoted him to full ensign , with all responsibilities and privileges – including the right to wear a Starfleet uniform . Wesley served as ensign aboard the Enterprise for the next year before leaving to become a cadet . ( TNG : " Ménage à Troi ", " Final Mission ")

Starfleet Academy [ ]

Wesley Crusher, 2368

A second-year cadet

After being accepted to Starfleet Academy, Picard offered to accompany Wesley to Earth, but first had to stop on Pentarus to mediate a dispute. The two were to travel with a representative of the planet named Dirgo . Their shuttle crashed and they were stranded on a desert planet. They found a water fountain in a cave but it was guarded by a force field . When Dirgo fired on the field, an electrical pulse discharged, causing a rock slide that seriously injured Picard. Later Dirgo, ignoring Wesley's advice, was killed by the same pulse. Wesley was able to disengage the force field and get water, saving Picard. They were rescued by the Enterprise shortly after. ( TNG : " Final Mission ")

A year later, Wesley boarded the Oberth -class USS Cochrane to visit his mother on the Enterprise while on break from the Academy. Over the course of his visit, he developed an attraction to Ensign Robin Lefler . During his visit, both he and Lefler discovered that the crew was acting strangely by obsessively playing a game . The game turned out to be a mind control device; it had been given to Riker on Risa in an attempt to capture the Enterprise . With the help of Lefler, Wesley and Data were able to disable the devices and restore the crew to normal. Before he left, Lefler gave Wesley a copy of " Robin's Laws " as a memento. ( TNG : " The Game ")

At the Academy, Wesley had become a member of the elite Nova Squadron . His Academy career in 2368 was troubled, however, when a deadly accident with his Nova Squadron comrades precipitated a cover-up. During the ceremony, Wesley and his comrades had engaged in a dangerous and prohibited flight maneuver known as the Kolvoord Starburst which caused the death of cadet Joshua Albert . Wesley, led by his well-spoken squadron leader Nicholas Locarno lied at the hearing, trying to blame the accident on Albert. But Picard eventually found out and confronted Wesley about it. He was angered but also disappointed in him, telling him that regardless of the loyalty he felt towards Locarno and his other comrades, his number one duty as a Starfleet officer was always to the truth. Picard threatened to come forward with his evidence unless Wesley did. Hesitantly, Wesley came forward with the truth and barely escaped expulsion.

All of Wesley's grades and work for that academic year were voided as punishment, and he was required to repeat the courses. He was crushed, having disappointed and let down everybody: his friends, his instructors, his family, and even himself. It was hardly a consolation when Picard commented that Wesley knew all along what was the right thing to do… and that, despite everything, it took the captain's ultimatum before Wes could bring himself to follow through. Although Wesley carried on with his studies after being left back, he never recaptured the self-respect and sense of belonging which the Nova Squadron scandal had cost him; these were replaced with deep-rooted shame and cynicism. Being surrounded by people who refused to forget or let him forget the scandal didn't help either. ( TNG : " The First Duty " ( citation needed • edit ) )

Wesley Crusher, 2370

Wesley as a civilian

In 2370 , cadet Crusher resigned from Starfleet Academy after The Traveler – posing as a villager on Dorvan V – guided him through a vision of his deceased father who told him that his destiny lay somewhere other than with Starfleet and that he should not follow in his footsteps. Much to his mother's and Picard's disappointment yet with their support, Wesley heeded the advice after which The Traveler revealed his true identity and promised to mentor the young man on his new journey, presumably to other planes of existence. ( TNG : " Journey's End ")

Later career [ ]

Wesley Crusher, 2379

Crusher in 2379

Despite the words of The Traveler, Wesley attended the marriage of William Riker and Deanna Troi in a lieutenant junior grade dress uniform in 2379 , strongly suggesting that he had indeed become a Starfleet officer at some point. ( Star Trek Nemesis )

In the years that followed, Crusher rejoined with the Travelers, and at one point, during a visitation with the past, Wesley had made a joke that had inadvertently changed a century's worth of history. Following that incident, he endeavored to never be misunderstood again. Wesley and the other Travelers were also responsible for dispatching the various supervisors responsible for ensuring the proper flow of time.

Following the success of the Europa Mission and the foiling of Adam Soong 's plot to create the Confederation of Earth timeline, Wesley approached Kore Soong and offered her a choice: she could continue to lead an ordinary life, or she could take a different path that would lead to "everything else", though Wesley could not guarantee Kore's safety. Conceding that she had never been safe, Kore accepted Wesley's offer and they were teleported away. ( PIC : " Farewell ")

Following his return to The Travelers, his mother considered herself as having had lost a son. A fact pointed out to her by Vadic in 2401 . ( PIC : " Seventeen Seconds ", " Dominion ", " Võx ")

Personal relationships [ ]

Friendships [ ], jean-luc picard [ ].

Wesley, Picard and Beverly Crusher, 2364

Picard showing Wesley his chair

Wesley's relationship with the Enterprise 's commanding officer , Jean-Luc Picard began when he brought his father Jack R. Crusher's body back to him and his mother Beverly after Jack was killed on an away mission while serving on the USS Stargazer . ( TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ", " Coming of Age ", " The Bonding ", " Violations ", " Attached ") Picard eventually became a father figure to Wesley. He later told Picard how angry he was that his father had met his end and not Picard, although he forgave the captain years later. ( TNG : " The Bonding ")

Picard and Wesley did not meet again until ten years later , when he and his mother were assigned to the Enterprise . After getting a brief tour of the bridge, Picard threw both Crushers off when Wesley announced a perimeter alert while sitting in his chair but later allowed him back on the bridge and had him control the operations station when he negotiated for a vaccine from Ligon II . ( TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ", " Code of Honor ")

Wesley and Picard on shuttlecraft

Wesley and Picard on the shuttlecraft Einstein

Picard reluctantly gave Wesley credit for saving the Enterprise from a stellar core fragment by forcing a repulsor beam against the SS Tsiolkovsky and later gave him the rank of acting ensign when he assisted The Traveler in returning the Enterprise back to the Milky Way Galaxy from the end of the universe . ( TNG : " The Naked Now ", " Where No One Has Gone Before ")

Picard violated the Prime Directive to save Wesley from capital punishment on Rubicun III after he unintentionally violated their laws by trespassing in a restricted zone on their world. ( TNG : " Justice ")

Later in 2364, Wesley repeatedly tried to tell Picard his misgivings about Data (which was actually Lore impersonating him). Picard then uttered " Shut up, Wesley. " Wesley's mother, although dismayed by Picard's choice of words, repeated his phrase to her son moments later when he would not be silent. ( TNG : " Datalore ")

Picard later consoled Wesley after he failed his Starfleet Academy entrance exam on Relva VII by telling him that he too had failed on his first attempt. Picard told Wesley that he was not to tell anyone about that, however. ( TNG : " Coming of Age ")

Picard and Wesley, 2365

Picard shares some life wisdom with Wesley in 2365

A year later, in 2365 , Picard allowed Wesley to stay on board the Enterprise when his mother left for Starfleet Medical and later tried to offer him some words of comfort after he witnessed the destruction of the USS Yamato . ( TNG : " The Child ", " Contagion ")

Picard and Wesley took the shuttlecraft Einstein to Starbase 515 together where on the way they learned many things about each other. Picard offered him some words of advice, saying that he should read literature, philosophy and history as well as subjects not required reading, so one day everything in the universe might mean something to him. ( TNG : " Samaritan Snare ")

In 2366 , Wesley assisted Picard and the Enterprise in rescuing Riker and Troi from DaiMon Tog but missed his transport to Earth on the USS Bradbury to begin his Starfleet Academy training. In light of these efforts, Picard gave Wesley a field promotion to a full ensign. ( TNG : " Ménage à Troi ")

Picard and Wesley were stranded when Dirgo 's shuttle, the Nenebek crashed on Lambda Paz in 2367 . With no food, water or shelter, Picard, Wesley, and Dirgo found refuge in a cave . Picard pushed Wesley out of the way of large falling rocks, which fell on top of Picard, seriously injuring him. Wesley kept Picard alive long enough for help to arrive after deactivating a force field surrounding water they had detected inside the cave with their tricorders . Wesley and Picard had a heartfelt goodbye during which Picard told him " Wesley… you will be missed. " ( TNG : " Final Mission ")

Wesley and Picard farewell

Wesley says goodbye to Picard

When the Enterprise crew were brainwashed by the Ktarian game in 2368 , Wesley, visiting the Enterprise from the Academy, informed Picard first about his and Robin Lefler's findings on the game ( TNG : " The Game ") and later Picard had a heated discussion with Wesley after he lied about his team, the Nova Squadron performing a dangerous and illegal maneuver called the Kolvoord Starburst which killed a fellow cadet. Picard told him " the first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth; whether it is scientific truth or historical truth or personal truth! It is the guiding principle on which Starfleet is based! " After admitting to Admiral Brand his and the team's deceit, Picard commended him for telling the truth and doing the right thing. ( TNG : " The First Duty ")

In 2370 , fed up with Starfleet, Wesley joined forces with the colonists of Dorvan V to protest the removal from their home by the Cardassians . Picard called his actions "inexcusable" and not those of a Starfleet officer. Wesley then personally gave Picard his resignation from Starfleet and ultimately decided to join with The Traveler to explore new planes of existence. Picard said his farewell to Wesley in the Enterprise 's transporter room, calling him by his name rather than "Mr. Crusher." ( TNG : " Journey's End ")

William T. Riker [ ]

Riker and Wesley, 2364

Wesley talking to Riker

Wesley had great respect for the Enterprise 's first officer , William T. Riker , even during their first meeting in the mall at Farpoint Station . Riker looked forward to getting to know Wesley, telling him " Wes… see you on board. " ( TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ") Shortly after the Farpoint Mission while the Enterprise was en route to Quadra Sigma III , Riker was temporarily granted the powers of the Q . After saving Wesley's life with his newfound powers, Riker, sensing Wesley's greatest desire, transformed him into a twenty-five-year-old man. Wesley declined Riker's "gift" and told the commander he'd rather get to that age himself. ( TNG : " Hide And Q ")

Riker enjoyed assigning Wesley duties on the bridge of the Enterprise several times and on Picard's orders, assigned him the duties on acting ensign with heavy study on the ship's specifications. ( TNG : " Code of Honor ", " Where No One Has Gone Before ", " Lonely Among Us ") Despite his general liking of Wesley, Riker was still stern to him on a number of occasions. ( TNG : " The Naked Now ", " Code of Honor ", " Where No One Has Gone Before ", " The Battle ", " Datalore ")

On Rubicun III , Riker knocked an Edo guard to the ground after he intended to kill Wesley with a lethal injection. ( TNG : " Justice ")

William T

Riker asking Wesley to observe the Bynars

Riker displayed great trust in Wesley, such as assigning him the responsibility of overlooking the Bynars work on upgrading the Enterprise 's computers on the bridge ( TNG : " 11001001 ") repairing a serious holodeck malfunction that could have killed four Enterprise crewmembers ( TNG : " The Big Goodbye ") as well as discreetly looking over Lore 's actions. ( TNG : " Datalore ")

A year later, Riker jokingly expressed concern on who would tuck Wesley in at night after his mother had departed the Enterprise for Starfleet Medical. ( TNG : " The Child ") Later in the year, Riker (with a little help from Guinan) assisted Wesley on how to properly speak to a woman. ( TNG : " The Dauphin ") As well, Riker provided some command advice to Wesley when he was put in charge of the geology team studying Drema IV . ( TNG : " Pen Pals ")

After hearing Jeremy Aster 's mother Marla had died, Wesley became upset for Jeremy, as his father had also been killed while on duty during an away mission. Riker attempted to console him and Wesley asked him how he got used to telling family members that a relative had been killed. Riker replied " You hope you never do. " ( TNG : " The Bonding ") After Wesley departed the Enterprise for Starfleet Academy in 2367 and returned the following year, Riker put Wesley back to work in helping the crew analyze the Phoenix Cluster . ( TNG : " Final Mission ", " The Game ")

Geordi La Forge [ ]

Wesley, La Forge and tractor beam

Wesley shows Geordi La Forge his miniature tractor beam

Wesley had a friendly relationship with the Enterprise 's original helmsman and later chief engineer, Geordi La Forge . In 2364 , La Forge viewed Wesley's model of the Enterprise 's tractor beam and told him he was "really something." ( TNG : " The Naked Now ")

In 2365 , La Forge relieved Wesley of his duties in engineering when he could see he was love struck by Salia . ( TNG : " The Dauphin ")

Wesley and La Forge worked closely together on preparing the eighty year-old USS Hathaway for a war game exercise against the Enterprise during Operation Lovely Angel . ( TNG : " Peak Performance ") The next year, Wesley helped La Forge escape Galorndon Core by sending a probe to the surface with a neutrino pulse that would be detectable by La Forge's VISOR . ( TNG : " The Enemy ")

In 2366 , while under the influence of Bendii Syndrome , La Forge and Wesley nearly came to blows after he mentioned Wesley's relationship with Suzanne Dumont . ( TNG : " Sarek ")

La Forge greeted Wesley warmly when he briefly returned to the Enterprise in 2368 ( TNG : " The Game ") and later assisted in the investigation of the accident that involved Wesley and Nova Squadron in the same year. ( TNG : " The First Duty ")

La Forge was offended by Wesley's behavior when he returned to the Enterprise in 2370. La Forge showed Wesley modifications he had made to the Enterprise by adding only one microfusion interrelay to improve quantum efficiency. Wesley snidely told him that Dr. Vassbinder would call his work obsolete. La Forge then promptly dismissed him. ( TNG : " Journey's End ")

Data and Wesley, 2368

Data and Wesley

Wesley met the Enterprise -D's android operations officer Data upon joining the crew at Farpoint. The two became friends as they both possessed highly analytical minds. ( TNG : " The Battle ", " The Offspring ") Data respected Wesley and along with the senior staff, recognized he was only a child but came to regard him as much more, although his "brother" Lore called him a " troublesome little man-child. " ( TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ", " Datalore ")

Wesley and Data enjoyed doing recreational activities together during their time on the Enterprise , such as three-dimensional chess or comparing theories on expanding the Enterprise 's sensors . ( TNG : " Booby Trap ", " The Battle ") Wesley also shared sympathy for Data in 2368 when he learned they both attended the " Sadie Hawkins Dance " at the Academy together. ( TNG : " The Game ")

Wesley requested that Data fill him in on who Salia of Daled IV was when he encountered her outside the transporter room . ( TNG : " The Dauphin ")

After Dr. Ira Graves secretly downloaded his "consciousness" into Data's neural net , Wesley expressed concern about Data, particularly during his eulogy to Graves when he said " to know him was to love him and to love him was to know him. " ( TNG : " The Schizoid Man ")

When Wesley returned to the Enterprise in 2370, Data expressed confusion over Wesley's moody behavior when he did not respond to one of his "jokes" involving security. ( TNG : " Journey's End ")

Wesley met Guinan , the Enterprise 's wise and mysterious bartender in Ten Forward shortly after she arrived aboard the ship in 2365. ( TNG : " The Child ")

Wesley was considering leaving to join his mother at Starfleet Medical and stared out the windows of Ten Forward while considering his future. Guinan came up to him and asked him several times if he wanted anything. Wesley wondered why she had asked him three times if wanted something when he said no. Guinan said she was just doing what she was expected to do. She asked him if he always did what was expected of him. Mostly because of this conversation, Wesley decided to remain on board. ( TNG : " The Child ")

When Wesley accidentally released nanites on the Enterprise , he encountered Guinan in Ten Forward while he was setting traps for them in the bar. Wesley confessed to her that he likely caused the various computer problems on the ship. Wesley assured her that the nanites were just a science project, to which Guinan said " you know, a doctor friend once said the same thing to me. Frankenstein was his name. " ( TNG : " Evolution ")

The Traveler and Wesley

Wesley with The Traveler in 2370

Wesley met The Traveler when he arrived on the Enterprise with Kosinski after the ship rendezvoused with the USS Fearless in 2364. The Traveler was immediately fascinated with Wesley's mind, as well as his solutions to complex problems. While in sickbay, The Traveler told Picard that Wesley was very special, in that he saw time and space not as the separate things they appeared to be. After The Traveler took the Enterprise to the end of the universe, Wesley helped him return the ship back to its original heading before he faded away. ( TNG : " Where No One Has Gone Before ")

Three years later, The Traveler reappeared on the Enterprise to assist Wesley in helping his mother Beverly escape from a warp bubble he had created before it collapsed. ( TNG : " Remember Me ")

In 2370, The Traveler entered Wesley's life once again, disguised as Lakanta , a colonist on Dorvan V. Wesley, at this point in his life had become sullen and rude as a result of his displeasure with his Starfleet career. The Traveler, after revealing his true identity to Wesley, encouraged him to explore places where thought and energy combine in ways he could not possibly imagine. Wesley then left Starfleet to explore new planes of existence with The Traveler as his guide. ( TNG : " Journey's End ") Nine years later , Wesley was seen at the wedding of Riker and Troi wearing a Starfleet uniform with the rank of lieutenant junior grade. ( Star Trek Nemesis ) However, he would later rejoin the Traveler fully, though he no longer went by the name Wesley Crusher. He said that his identity was "a long and complicated story". ( PIC : " Farewell ")

Romance [ ]

Wesley and Salia kiss

Wesley's first kiss

Wesley met an allasomorph named Salia on her journey to Daled IV , the planet that she was to rule. However, she deceived him about how she truly appeared and he was understandably upset when it was revealed to him in the manner that it was. He was able to reconcile with Salia before she left Enterprise . ( TNG : " The Dauphin ")

Annette [ ]

Wesley briefly became involved with Annette , a young woman who lived on the Enterprise in 2366 . His mother Beverly asked Guinan what she knew about her. ( TNG : " Evolution ")

Robin Lefler [ ]

Wesley met Ensign Robin Lefler when he visited the Enterprise while on a break from the Academy in 2368 . The two became close during their brief time together, which included having dinner in Ten Forward . The two were later instrumental in rescuing the Enterprise crew from the Ktarian game introduced by Etana . Wesley later gave Lefler a kiss when they parted ways; she in turn gave him a copy of her "Laws". ( TNG : " The Game ")

Alternate Wesley Crushers [ ]

Holograms [ ].

Wesley, Barclay program 15

A holographic Wesley with some pie

Wesley was holographically duplicated at least twice.

Lt. Reginald Barclay in 2366 recreated Wesley at least twice when he was suffering from holo-addiction . In one of his holo-fantasies , Wesley was an ill-mannered slob and his mother had to chide him, saying that "Master Barclay" would spank him if he misbehaved. In another, the entire crew of the Enterprise -D was recreated, and this Wesley was present when Barclay said goodbye to his fantasies and deleted the programs. ( TNG : " Hollow Pursuits ")

Alternate realities and timelines [ ]

In an alternate timeline , Wesley was a commissioned officer during the Federation's war with the Klingons in 2366. He observed the USS Enterprise -C emerge from a temporal anomaly and piloted the Enterprise -D during its battle with three Klingon K'Vort -class cruisers. ( TNG : " Yesterday's Enterprise ")

Wesley Crusher, alternate 2370

Wesley was a tactical officer in a parallel universe

In one quantum reality , Wesley Crusher served as a full lieutenant on the USS Enterprise -D under the command of Captain Riker with the positions of security chief and tactical officer in 2370 . ( TNG : " Parallels ")

Background information [ ]

Wesley Crusher was played by Wil Wheaton . William A. Wallace played 25-year-old Wesley in " Hide And Q ".

" Final Mission " marked Wesley Crusher's final regular appearance on TNG .

Wesley's middle initial "R" appeared in his mother's personnel file seen in " Conundrum ".

According to StarTrek.com , Wesley Crusher was born on July 29, 2349, and his full name was Wesley Robert Crusher. [2]

On the special The Star Trek Saga: From One Generation To The Next , in an interview with Gene Roddenberry , he says that Wesley was built a little bit after himself at the age of 14, although Roddenberry admits he was never the genius that Wesley was (Roddenberry's middle name was Wesley).

Wesley Crusher screen test

An early wardrobe and makeup test

During the early development of the series, Robert H. Justman convinced Roddenberry to change the character into a female, with the name "Leslie Crusher". As Justman told him, " Geez, everybody has boy teenagers; let's do a girl. Let's explore the problems that female adolescents go through, you know, because that's never done. " However, the character was later turned back into a boy, as in the original concept. ( Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion  (2nd ed., p. 14); [3] )

The 10 December 1986 casting call (featured in the Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion  (2nd ed., p. 13)) described the (then female) character as:

The 23 March 1987 Writers' Bible described the character as:

Wheaton relaxing on set

Relaxing between takes

Wesley Crusher also has the distinction of being one of sci-fi's most hated characters. In a poll done by Maxim magazine, only Star Wars ' Jar Jar Binks topped Crusher's level of annoyance. Additionally, statistical analysis done by Datascope Analytics shows that episodes with Wesley tend to have significantly lower ratings than those without. [4] Fans expressed annoyance that Wesley always seemed to be the one to save the Enterprise, however, during an interview on DVD special features, Wheaton claimed that Wesley only saved the ship 'one and a half times'. Nevertheless, in his online reviews of early TNG episodes, Wheaton admits that he understands where the fans' hatred comes from and lays the blame firmly at the feet of the writers for making the character seem pretentious, through dialogue and through their tendency to have Wesley deduce answers too easily, as in the episode TNG : " The Battle "' when Wesley made everyone else (including, in Wheaton's own words, "the hypersmart robot") look ridiculous by too easily solving the problem from just "glancing" at sensor readings that no one else could solve. According to Wheaton, even he hated Wesley after these kinds of scenes. Other complaints include the costume department's selection of sweaters for him and the treatment he received by most of the directors. In his words, only one treated him as a person instead of a living prop. [5]

In a deleted scene from the Special Edition DVD of Star Trek Nemesis , Wesley explains at the wedding scene that he was being assigned to the USS Titan under Captain William Riker as part of the Engineering team. No explanation for his return from his journey with The Traveler was given. This scene is also featured in the novelization of Star Trek Nemesis .

Wesley Crusher on the Titan

Crusher as assistant chief engineer of the USS Titan

As part of Star Trek The Exhibition , Wesley appears as a Lieutenant Commander and assistant chief engineer on the USS Titan . This was first reported in January 2008 on Wil Wheaton's blog. [6]

Ronald D. Moore commented:

In April 2002 , ZENtertainment (X) (a now-defunct Hollywood news source) reported, " Ashley Judd was on Letterman the other night to promote her new movie, High Crimes . Letterman surprised her with a clip of her appearance on TNG, where she went on a date with Wesley Crusher. Judd mentioned that she was reprising the role [of Robin Lefler] in Star Trek Nemesis as Wesley's wife. " [7] [8] This never happened, however.

This was also reported by About Sci-Fi , which added to the report " …Wil Wheaton, however, says he's heard nothing about that. Somehow, I'm not surprised Wesley doesn't know he's married. " [9]

Later on, " Judd's spokesperson denied this cameo appearance. " [10]

In August 2002 , Wil Wheaton found out and reported that his scene had been cut from Star Trek Nemesis . There was no mention (by him) about Judd or Lefler. [11]

Apocrypha [ ]

According to the video game Star Trek: Starship Creator , Wesley was born in San Francisco .

In the A Time for War, A Time for Peace novel series, Wesley's uniform is explained by him showing up to Riker's and Troi's wedding naked, having expected a Betazoid wedding , and the uniform was lent to him. In this continuity, Wesley was still a Traveler and had not returned to Starfleet. Also, according to this novel, his full name is Wesley Eugene Crusher.

In the Voyager novel Enemy of My Enemy , Wesley appeared during Chakotay 's spirit walk .

Wesley's mirror universe counterpart appears in Star Trek Online , with Wil Wheaton returning to voice him. The episode "The Eye of the Storm", released in September 2022, reveals that the mirror Wesley is the Emperor of the Terran Empire , who possesses incredible "personal power", including the ability to freeze entire fleets in a "time bubble". He plans to merge with "the Other", the mirror counterpart of V'ger , to become a god and destroy all who oppose him in every universe, starting with the prime universe. The mission "The Fujiwhara Effect", released in January 2023, shows flashbacks of his early life, having to hide his true potential until he took the power of the Traveler and seized the Terran throne. He is deposed and separated from "the Other" by the efforts of his mother, and taken in by V'ger to discover his true potential. Two different versions of his mirror universe counterpart had previously appeared in the novel Dark Mirror and the novella The Worst of Both Worlds .

In the comic story "A Matter of Choice" from Star Trek, Issue 400 written by Wil Wheaton, Wesley reunited with Picard following his return from 2024. He explains that he came to Picard to ask his advice on choosing whether or not to bring in a special individual to be his replacement. Remembering advice given to him by Picard and the crew of the Enterprise , Wesley makes his decision and says goodbye to Picard and returns to Los Angeles 2024 to recruit Kore into the Travelers.

Star trek: discovery season 5 episode 6 ending explained.

Captain Burnham must break the Prime Directive to save Tilly and find the Progenitors' next clue in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 6.

WARNING: Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery, season 5, episode 6, "Whistlespeak".

  • Burnham's decision to break the Prime Directive saved Tilly and the Halem'nites from certain death.
  • Tilly's struggles with Starfleet Academy students hint at a future storyline for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
  • Culber's spiritual awakening challenges Star Trek's rationalism, leading to a deeper exploration of his character.

By the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 6, "Whistlespeak", Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew are one step closer to the Progenitors' technology, following a mission to a pre-warp society that risked the life of Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman). After last week's big revelations about the Mirror Universe, Moll (Eve Harlow), L'ak (Elias Toufexis), and the Breen Imperium, "Whistlespeak", written by Kenneth Lin and Brandon Schultz, and directed by Chris Byrne, is a more traditional Star Trek adventure. Seeking the next clue on the planet Halem'no, Burnham and Tilly join the Journey of the Mother Compeer.

This religious pilgrimage takes the form of a race to prove devotion to Halem'no's gods, in the hope of making it rain again. However, this religious pilgrimage has life-threatening consequences for Tilly , providing Burnham with a dilemma over whether she breaks Star Trek 's Prime Directive to save her friend. Elsewhere, on the USS Discovery, Ensign Adira Tal (Blu del Barrio) is struggling to settle into their new role as science officer on the bridge, while Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) gets closer to coming to terms with his spiritual awakening, courtesy of some wise words from Cleveland Booker (David Ajala).

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Captain burnham broke the prime directive to save tilly, the halem'nites and tilly would have died without burnham..

Believing that the next clue to the Progenitors' treasure was hidden in the High Summit, a weather tower disguised as a mountain, Burnham and Tilly joined the pilgrimage in the hope of making it inside. However, it quickly transpired that once inside the tower, there was no way out. Designed by Denobulan scientist Hitoroshi Kreel , the towers were designed to protect the Halem'nites from the punishing dust storms that take place on their planet. Tilly and young initiate Ravah (June Laporte) became trapped inside the vacuum chamber, meaning that they would suffocate to death unless they were rescued.

The Denobulans were introduced in Star Trek: Enterprise via the Enterprise NX-01's Denobulan Dr. Phlox (John Billingsley).

Discovery was unable to beam Tilly and Ravah out of the weather tower due to the walls being made of tritanium, making it impossible to get a transporter lock . Which is why Burnham made the difficult decision break the Prime Directive by beaming into the weather tower's control room to reveal the truth to Ohvaz (Alfredo Narciso). Burnham was right to break the Prime Directive , because the Denobulan weather towers were failing, and in drastic need of repair. Without Burnham's intervention, Tilly and Ravah would have died for no reason, and the Halem'nites would have eventually been driven to extinction .

While it's definitely a breach of the Prime Directive, Burnham is still very careful not to destroy Ohvaz's beliefs , telling him that " Nothing we have shown you means gods don't exist ". Indeed, Burnham's quest for life itself is proof of some higher power in the Star Trek universe . While Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie), Tilly, and Burnham all lament the inevitable ramifications, it seems likely that Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg) will brush off this breach of the Prime Directive in favor of Discovery's Red Directive mission .

There is a Prime Directive exception to allow repairs to existing "contamination" as long as it doesn't interfere with the natural growth of the populace, which is effectively what Burnham did on Halem'no.

Tilly's Away Mission Sets Up Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

Starfleet academy is failing its new students..

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 6, "Whistlespeak" appears to set up Star Trek: Starfleet Academy by revealing more about Tilly's struggles to get through to her students . Discussing her new career with Burnham, Tilly reveals that one of her students wants to quit the Academy to take a position aboard a cargo freighter. Later, when they meet Ravah, Tilly notes the similarities between the young woman keen to prove herself to her gods and the Starfleet Academy cadet who wants to get out into the stars as soon as possible.

Star Trek: Discovery Proves Starfleet Academy Show Doesn’t Make Sense Without Tilly

Tilly and Ravah's instant connection is a welcome reminder of why Tilly's such a good fit for Starfleet Academy . Tilly's empathy for Ravah, and the gut-wrenching guilt when she realizes that she's signed her death warrant demonstrates the huge responsibility involved in training new Starfleet officers. Confiding in Michael, Tilly reveals that she thinks Starfleet Academy is failing their students, perhaps focusing more on the theoretical than the practical. Tilly's final mission on the USS Discovery, and interactions with characters like Ravah could help her to reform the institution when she returns to Starfleet Academy.

The Meaning of Denobulan's Progenitors Clue Explained

"...we need to be so careful.".

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5 , "Mirrors", Burnham and Book realized that each of the clues to the Progenitors' treasure contained important lessons. For example, the clue hidden on Trill, in the heart of an Itronok nest, was designed to test whether Book and Burnham valued life-forms different from their own. As with all the previous clues, the one left behind by Denobulan scientist Kreel contains a message, which is discussed by Burnham and Tilly, after they secure it from the dormant fifth weather tower.

It transpires that the cultural impact of the technology installed on Halem'no by the Denobulans was the lesson . When the towers began failing, the Halem'nites began sacrificing themselves to make it rain, something that the Denobulans could never have predicted. It's a reminder to Burnham and Tilly that when they eventually find the Progenitors' technology they have to be very careful with how they use it. The fifth and final clue, located in the fifth weather tower, is written in Betazoid text, left behind by the fifth and final scientist, Marina Derex.

Dr. Culber Is Coming To Terms With His Experience On Trill

Culber's had a "thrilling" spiritual awakening..

Dr. Culber's spiritual awakening has been one of the most interesting storylines in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, as it challenges the franchise's stance on religion . The clash between Star Trek 's rationalism and Culber's spiritualism is exemplified by his discussions with a hologram of his Abuela (Maria del Mar), a spiritual woman who raised Hugh to be a man of science. However, after spending the episode trying to find a scientific explanation, Culber instead realizes that there isn't one , and that his mind is instead opened up to new possibilities and something larger than himself.

At the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 6, Dr. Culber discusses his new awakening with Book, who acknowledges that it " sounds kind of wonderful ". Book advises Culber not to be so concerned that his husband, Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) doesn't quite understand Hugh's new perspective . Reflecting on Culber's situation as a Kwejian, Book helps Hugh come to terms with it by sharing an observation of human relationships, and the obsession with sharing a personal passion with a partner:

"It's an odd quirk, really, this human tendency to consider something less meaningful if it's just for yourself."

Wilson Cruz Killed It Playing Star Trek: Discovery's Trill

Will book and michael get back together in star trek: discovery season 5, "one answer at a time, doc".

To return the favor, Dr. Culber tries to get Book to open up about his break-up with Michael at the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 4 . It's been clear throughout Discovery season 5 that Book and Burnham still have feelings for one another, but they're yet to act upon them . Michael got a reminder of how happy they were in "Face the Strange" when she time traveled back to an earlier point in their relationship. In "Mirrors", their relationship was a reflection of that between Moll and L'ak, and there was a strong sense of Burnham and Book still being a great team.

Dr. Culber quizzes Book about Burnham at the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 6, seeing through Booker's front. Asked whether he thinks he can get back what he once had with Michael, Book simply replied " One question at a time, Doc ", proving that affairs of the heart can be even more complex than the search for the Progenitors' treasure. As Book is still determined to get through to Moll after the events of "Mirrors", his "sister" could still provide a major stumbling block for a romantic reunion between Burnham and Booker in Discovery season 5.

Discovery Is Taking A Detour To Deal With Moll And L'ak

The uss locherer just found moll and l'ak..

At the start of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 6, "Whistlespeak", Burnham is ordered by Dr. Kovich to forget about Moll and L'ak and focus on the next clue. By the end of the episode, Federation Headquarters informs the USS Discovery that Moll and L'ak have been located by the USS Locherer . This feels suspicious given Kovich's insistence that Burnham focus on her Red Directive mission and forget all about tracking Moll and L'ak. It remains to be seen if the USS Discovery is about to enter a trap or instead engage in another desperate attempt to bring Moll and L'ak on side.

T he title of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 7, "Erigah", is a reference to the Breen blood bounty placed on Moll and L'ak by Primarch Ruhn (Tony Nappo) . It's likely, therefore, that the translation of the Betazoid clue will be taking a backseat in the next episode, as Burnham and the crew reckon with the ramifications of a Breen blood bounty. As the Discovery crew is so close to the finish line with the Progenitors' treasure there could be no worse time to engage the Breen as Star Trek: Discovery season 5 continues.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 streams Thursdays on Paramount+.
