Returns from Tresco at 2.15, 3.45 and 4.45.  St. Agnes Departures from St. Mary's at 10.15, 11.45 and 2.00.  Returns from St. Agnes at 2.15, 4.00 and 4.45.  St. Martins Departures from St. Mary's at

8.45am,  10.15, 12.30pm (for Scillonian arrivals) and 2.00.  Returns from St. Martins at 2.30, 3.45 and 4.45.  Bryher (& Samson)  Departures from St. Mary's at 10.15 and 2.00.  Returns from Bryher at 2.30 and 4.45.  Island Hopping (Two Island Trip)  Whilst the most relaxing way to enjoy the Islands is to spend a day on each one, several multi island combinations are possible. These include Tresco and Bryher, Samson and Bryher, and Tresco and Samson. Availability of these trips will vary so please come and ask on St. Mary's Quay when on the Islands.  Please Note: The times shown above are to illustrate the service that we provide and should not be taken as a timetable, as return times in particular, will vary. You will always be told the return times on the outward journey.

Wildlife & Sightseeing Trips We aim to run two or three wildlife & sightseeing trips each day, but their operation is largely determined by tide and weather conditions. A selection of the trips we offer are outlined below. They generally depart at 10.15am with a smaller selection at 2.00pm. After the trip you can usually visit one of the off islands at no extra charge or return immediately to St. Mary's.

Eastern Isles A one and a half hour cruise around this idyllic group of a dozen uninhabited islands nestling in the Eastern corner of Scilly, is our most popular circular trip. The Eastern Isles are one of the best places for viewing the Atlantic Grey Seals as well as offering a wonderful variety of seabirds. This trip lands at St. Martins.  Bishop and Western Rocks This is our longest trip and takes about two hours. You will visit Annet, the bird sancturary to look for Puffins (from April until lat July) and then cruise on through the Western Rocks, visiting shipwreck sites and viewing the seals. The climax to the trip is the visit to the Bishop Rock Lighthouse, the most South Westerly point in Britain. Take the opportunity to do this trip early in your holiday as adverse weather can stop us doing it for many days at a time. This trip is done in the mornings and lands at St. Agnes.  Annet Annet is a bird sancturary, closed for landing throughout the year because of the large number of breeding seabirds. The main attractions of Annet are the Puffins, but you can also expect to see a wide variety of other seabirds. The trip lasts about one and a quarter hours and can be combined with a visit to St. Agnes. The trip is done in the afternoons and in the mornings when conditions are not good enough for the Bishop Rock trip and will only be done until late July.  The Norrard Rocks The Norrard Rocks are a group of rugged rocks and islands, located to the North and West of Samson and Bryher. They include Mincarlo, Scilly Rock and Maiden Bower, to name but a few. This one and a half hour trip is an excellent opportunity to see both seals and seabirds (including Puffins until late July) in one relatively short trip. Lands at Tresco or Bryher.  Round Island Lighthouse This one and a half hour trip takes in Round Island with it's lighthouse, Tean, St. Helens and all the other little rocks and islands that are located in the area between Tresco and St. Martins. This is an area that is rich in history. You will also visit Men-A-Vaur, an imposing rock that is home to many seabirds. Puffins are often seen here up until late July. Lands at Tresco, Bryher or St. Martins (the islands landed on depend on weather and tides). Around St. Mary's This is an easy way to see the coast of St. Mary's! In any case, you get a completely different perspective from the sea. As you go around you will see all of the points of interest. If the tide permits you will go in and out of the various bays. The trip takes about one and a quarter hours and lands at St. Agnes or Tresco (depending on which way round you go).  Seabird Special  This is not to be missed by anyone with an interest in birds. On this two hour trip you will visit many of the rocks and islands where the various seabirds nest and roost, looking for as many different types of sea and shore birds as possible. A comprehensive commentary is given by wildlife expert Will Wagstaff. The trip is run once a week, usually on Sundays as near to high tide as possible. When run in the morning you can land on Tresco or Bryher afterwards. A Cruise in the Past Sit back on the boat and enjoy looking at and hearing about many of the sites of historical and archaeological interest which give an insight into Scilly's fascinating past. An expert commentary is given by Katharine Sawyer. The route will vary so as to make best use of the tide and weather conditions. We try to run this trip once a week, so watch the blackboards on St. Mary's for details.

Evening Trips Through the warmer months we operate a variety of evening trips. These include Shearwater Specials, Supper boats to St. Agnes and trips to follow the gig races.

St. Agnes Evening Service From May until mid-September, this operates most nights when the weather is fit. Departure is usually at 6pm and while giving you plenty of time for a stroll on St. Agnes, the highlight of the evening is usually a visit to the "Turks Head" pub for a meal or a drink.  Shearwater Special We try to run this twice a week from early May until late August., usually on Monday and Thursday evenings. The trip will take you to Annet, the bird sanctuary to view the breeding seabirds (including puffins until mid-July) and then on to look for the elusive Manx Shearwaters. By day these birds are usually far out at sea but in the evenings they collect together on the water off Annet and to witness this evening assembly of the Manx Shearwaters is a truly memorable experience. An expert commentary is given on these trips by renowned ornithologist Will Wagstaff. Departure is usually at 8pm but will be a little earlier early and late in the season.  Gig Racing The six oared pilot gigs were originally built to race to put pilots aboard sailing ships approaching the islands. Today some of these same boats have been restored and race alongside more recently built replicas. A gig race is a wonderfully colourful sight and is a good evenings' sport for participants and spectators alike. Races are rowed over a variety of courses and the times of boats going out to watch them will be advertised on the boards on the quay. The ladies race on Wednesday evenings and the men on Friday evenings. Some races finish on the off islands and on these occasions watching the race can usually be combined with a visit to the island hostelries before returning to St. Mary's.  Other special evening trips may appear from time to time. These may include a trip to the uninhabited island of Samson for a picnic supper, or a trip to watch a theatre club performance or a band playing on one of the off islands. Watch the boards on the quay.

Group Bookings We can always cater for groups, both on our regular services or by providing a special boat if the regular services do not fit in with your requirements. It does help us to know a group's plans at least a day ahead so that we can fit it in with our planning. If your group is doing more than one trip we can "run a tab" for you and you just settle up with us before you leave. We will normally give large groups a discount of 10% off our published fares. If you are planning to visit the islands with a group and want more information in advance, give us a ring on +44 (0) 1720 423999. Alternatively, just get in touch with us when you arrive and subject to weather and tides we will do what we can to fulfil your requirements.

Fishing Trips

Shark & Reef Fishing For the more serious angler, 5 hour Shark and Reef and fishing trips are available on the Sapphire. Again these take place in the evenings during the main season on a Monday & Thursday from late May - late September departing at 5pm.

All fishing equipment is provided. For groups of anglers. special trips or full days out can be arranged. Ring Joe on 07776 204631

For the Mackerel/Pollack trips, just watch the "Surprise" board on the quay and just turn up. For the other fishing trips it is best to speak to Paul or Joe on the quay or call them on the numbers above.

Pelagic Trips  These are trips out away from the islands and for the serious bird watcher they provide the possibility of seeing several rare species as well as the more common birds that are found offshore. There is also a good chance of seeing a number of cetaceans. Again these trips are usually carried out in the evenings with a 5pm departure with occasional daytime trips being organised. These trips are carried out by Joe Pender on the " Sapphire " a nd are often run in conjunction with the  shark fishing trips  as the "chumming" that brings the sharks in also attracts the birds.  Details will be found on the boards on the quay or the skippers can be contacted directly: Joe Pender on 07776 204631

Thank you so much for our trip yesterday, we saw everything we wanted to and more. You are very knowledgable and it was great to hear you talk so passionately about this beautiful area. Highly recommend this to anyone wanting to do a wildlife boat trip also dog friendly!

Dave is very knowledgeable about the Islands and the wild life, has a great sense of humour and made our family day out last year one the grandchildren want to repeat this year. highly recommended for any visitors.

Dave, was great, very knowledgeable and because there were only 11 of us on the boat, a great experience. We saw everything we were hoping to see, loads of puffins, gannets, razorbills, guillemots, seals etc. best wildlife life tour we have ever been on in the Isles of Scilly and we have been coming for over 18 years. Wish we had found Dave earlier but then he probably wouldn’t have been old enough to take us out.

Our high-speed jetboat wildlife trips last an hour and are scheduled regularly to meet demand at a cost of £40 per person. To book or enquire about future trips, please call 01720 423373 or email us .

Alternatively, we also schedule regular wildlife trips aboard our larger ferries for a more leisurely exploration of the islands at a cost of £15 per person (under 14s half price; under 3s free). These boats are advertised on our weekly boating plan and daily boat times on our website and on island boat boards.

We sailed to the Eastern Isles where we saw lots of seals in the water and on the rocks. Then the skipper spotted gannets hunting, accompanied by porpoises and dolphins dipping and jumping through the waves, playing and crisscrossing under the boat. A magical trip. Mr Brooker

Check in with us at 7.00am at our booking kiosk on the North Quay of Padstow Harbour (directions in your confirmation email). We will depart Padstow by 7.30am at the latest. (Please note that the public toilets will not be open until 8.00am but there is a small toilet on board the boat should you need it.) We will be arriving on St Mary’s around 10.30am and will depart again at around 3.30pm, to arrive back in Padstow between 6.30pm and 7.00pm.

About the journey

Travel to the Scillies will be on our 12-passenger cabined RIB so you can travel in comfort with indoor seating and an onboard toilet; but if you prefer the bracing salty air, you can sit outside on the outdoor deck – or move between the two!

Due to the need for calmer conditions to ensure a smooth passage to the Isles of Scilly, these trips will be scheduled at shorter notice to guarantee the best experience for our passengers. Keep an eye on our social media platforms for announcements throughout the season.

Professionally guided

Our boat trips are professionally guided, offering you the chance to learn a little about any wildlife we may see as well as points of interest along our rich coastline. Your knowledgeable guide will be happy to answer any questions you have along the way. You will have ample opportunity to snap some great photos of exciting wildlife and the rugged coastline. Each trip will encompass an exciting boat trip with the opportunity to spot marine wildlife throughout the journey, and a day out exploring the stunning island of St Mary’s.

Plan your day on the Scilly Isles

Here are a few tips to help you plan your 5 hours and consider anything that you may want to try and book in advance:.

With limited time, it may not be possible to visit the other islands of the Scillies. Feel free to enquire to the local boat operators, although many of them leave St Mary’s around 10am on their early trips and return at 4.30pm on their later trips which unfortunately won’t quite work with our timings, but may not be the case for all of them.

However, there is so much to do in your few hours on the island of St. Mary’s. From a stroll through Hugh Town, you’ll reach Porthcressa Beach where you’ll also find the Tourist Information Centre to give you some tips to the best things to see and do during your visit. The Tourist Information Centre is closed on a Sunday, but the Silver Street Gallery have offered their wealth of local knowledge, so if you pop in, someone will gladly give you some advice on highlights around the island and point you in the right direction. On Sundays, some of the shops and cafes on the main high street you first reach when you leave the harbour may be closed, however, do not worry as there is still plenty open and lots of places to explore (and eat!).

From Porthcressa, you can head up to Buzza Tower to admire the view or walk around the headland to Peninnis Head Lighthouse and onto Old Town where there are a couple of eateries; passing by the stunningly peaceful church yard where Lord Harold Wilson is buried. The Old Town beach is also a perfect spot for beachcombing.

An alternative short walk from the Quay, you can head for Garrison Hill for a beautiful walk around the heavily fortified headland, steeped in history, surrounding the Star Castle. The Garrison offers terrific views of the entire archipelago to give you a sense of what Scilly has to offer, as well as of course the opportunity for a bite to eat at the historic Star Castle Hotel itself.

Alternatively if you want to explore further afield, you can hire a bike or an electric golf buggy and head off (advanced booking required). There’ll be plenty of time to check out the Iron Age and Bronze Age settlements at Bant’s Carn and Halangy Village and discover the sublime beauty and peacefulness of Scilly’s stunning more remote beaches. Taxis will be very willing to provide a tour of St. Mary’s but you will need to contact them in advance.

If you’re feeling active and want to hit the water, the sailing centre offers hire of kayaks, SUPs, windsurf gear, dinghies etc. Give them a call in advance to check availability.

If you’re after lunch with views, try Juliet’s , overlooking Porthloo Beach, or Porthcressa Beach-side tapas at Dibble and Grub . Take in the surrounds of a traditional pub in town, with The Mermaid being the most traditional and closest to the harbour. Finish by popping into a local shop to gift buy before heading back to the harbour to board the boat.

Make sure you bring comfortable footwear for the island, a warmer jacket in case it gets chilly while the boat is travelling, water/drinks and snacks for the journey as well as your camera and binoculars if you have them in case you spot any exciting wildlife on the journey!

Isles of Scilly Day Trip FAQs

We can take from ages 2 and up (babies are not permitted). Prices are the same per person and there is no discounted child price. Please ensure any children would be happy on a boat for 3+ hours at a time.

Our trips still run on rainy days. The boat does have an inside cabin as well as outdoor seating to keep you warm and dry on the journey. If you do wish to sit outside, please dress extra warm on rainy days with lots of layers and waterproofs to avoid getting cold and wet.

We plan these trips at short notice to ensure suitable sea conditions and avoid having to cancel. However, if we cancel your trip due to unforeseen circumstances, we will contact you as soon as possible to offer to reschedule you to a later date. If this is not possible, we can issue you with a full refund. Please note: If you cancel a booking yourself, we require at least 24 hours notice to be able to issue a refund.

Due to the bouncy nature of the boat, our trips are not suitable for pregnant women.

Our boat travels at speed and can be bouncy in places so is not suitable for those with back/spine/bone problems.

Due to limited space in the cabin and the duration of the journey, unfortunately we cannot accommodate dogs on these day trips.

Once you arrive on St Mary's you'll make your way to The Atlantic in Hugh Town (April 2024 departures) or Star Castle (September 2024 departures) and begin to explore your surroundings. In the evening you'll have dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Old town beach Red Valerian, St Mary's

Today you'll take a boat transfer and explore the lovely isle of St Martin's where you'll discover the island's ruggedly beautiful shoreline. Little St Martin's is just two miles long, but boasts some of the finest beaches in the British Isles.

Lunch at a local spot is included, and afterwards you'll pay a visit to St Martin's Vineyard, a unique coastal vineyard and winery which is working towards organic production of white, red and rose wines.

Path to Rushy Bay beach in Bryher

Today you'll take the boat to beautiful Bryher where lunch has been arranged at the luxury Hell Bay Hotel. Bryher is an island of exciting contrasts. On one side you have the roaring Atlantic ocean and a rugged coastline, while on the other side you'll find tranquil waters and powder-soft beaches.

Hell Bay is on the Atlantic side, and from here you can watch as dramatic waves thunder into the bay. The restaurant at Hell Bay Hotel is one of the best rated in the Isles of Scilly. You'll tuck into award-winning dishes at the hotel bar which use the finest ingredients from the Isles of Scilly, Cornwall and the wider West Country.

Puffins, Scilly Isles

This morning, following another hearty breakfast, you'll make your way to the jetty and hop on the ferry transfer to St Agnes, where you'll take a guided walk around the island's coastline.

There's plenty to see along St Agnes' coast, from rocky outcrops on its exposed west side to paradise beaches in its sheltered coves. There's a sandbar that links St Agnes with the tiny neighboring island of Gugh, where you'll find white sand and crystal-clear water.

You'll tuck into lunch at a local pub before taking a fascinating marine wildlife cruise, where you have a chance to spot some of the special animals and birds who call the Scillies home.

Abbey Gardens Tresco

After breakfast you'll meet your tour manager and your guide for the day. You'll make your way to the jetty and take the boat transfer to Tresco where you'll visit the world famous Tresco Abbey Garden, home to a collection of some 20,000 plants from 80 countries.

The garden was established in the 19th century around the ruins of an old Benedictine Abbey and is now home to a fantastic variety of plants from all over the world, including Brazil, New Zealand and South Africa. The garden changes throughout the year as different species thrive. In spring, flowers bloom here weeks before they do on the mainland thanks to the Tresco's special sub-tropical climate. You'll have time for lunch in Tresco (not included) before heading back to St Mary's.

Sunset, Scilly Isles

After your final breakfast at your hotel you'll enjoy some free time on St Mary's before taking the Scillonian ferry back to Penzance.

Isles of Scilly

An 8-day birdwatching holiday to the relaxing and beautiful Isles of Scilly.

Quick Enquiry

Quick enquiry.

The fabulous Isles of Scilly lie just a short distance from the south-west tip of Cornwall yet seem a world away from the mainland. Renowned as a staging post for migrant birds, the archipelago also boasts a fine selection of resident seabirds, is home to many Grey Seals, and supports a huge diversity of tropical flora flourishing in the almost frost-free environment. This wildlife holiday concentrates on the birdlife and natural history of the Scilly Isles, visiting the inhabited islands of St. Agnes, St. Martin's, Tresco and Bryher from a comfortable guesthouse base on the largest island, St. Mary's. Our holiday departures in both spring and autumn guarantee some of the finest coastal scenery in Europe, numerous boat trips and superb natural history walks.

  • Scenic boat journey from Penzance along Cornish coast
  • Enjoy Scilly’s white sandy beaches, turquoise seas & amazing granite forms
  • Exciting birdwatching includes residents, migrants & regular rarities
  • Grey Seals & seabird colonies (in spring)
  • Plenty of inter-island boat trips
  • Comfortable guesthouse accommodation
  • A chance to observe the unique Scillonian way of life
  • An extraordinary flora includes many species rarely seen on mainland
  • Natural history walks, each day exploring a new area or island

Grade A/B. This tour consists of day walks only (all of which are optional), of between two and ten miles per day, but this will be at a slow birdwatching pace and does not entail any steep climbs.

Travel between islands is by boat, so you must be comfortable in stepping on and off the tenders.

The fabulous Isles of Scilly are just 28 miles from Land's End, easily visible from the mainland on a clear day, and yet all the stresses of daily life seem to vanish within hours of reaching the islands. They are a supremely relaxing place to spend a holiday with decision making reduced to choosing which island to visit or which cafe to patronise.

The Scillonian population of approximately 2,000 is mostly concentrated on the largest island St. Mary's but small communities are also found on Tresco, St. Martin's, Bryher and St. Agnes. Flower farming is still a major source of income for the islanders but decreasing in importance as the traditional advantage of being able to supply early spring flowers to the market is negated by the mass import of blooms by air from places like Israel. As the flower industry diminishes, tourism is booming and the very high level of repeat bookings from one year to the next is evidence that few visitors are ever disappointed! It might even be advisable to issue a warning to all first time visitors stating that the islands are highly addictive and likely to feature in your holiday plans for many years in the future!

A passenger ferry, Scillonian III, sails from Penzance to St. Mary's each morning Monday-Saturday, returning later in the day. The cruise provides superb views of the West Cornwall coast from Newlyn to Land's End. It should be stated however that the stretch of sea between the islands and the mainland is where Atlantic swells meet the currents of the English Channel and the resulting turbulence can make the cruise an uncomfortable experience for poor sailors, particularly after recent gales. Fortunately, alternatives exist with a regular helicopter service from Penzance and the fixed wing Skybus flights from St. Just near Land's End. Both these options are more expensive than the boat but the journey time is reduced to 20 minutes. Limited Skybus services also operate from Exeter and Newquay. The holiday price is calculated on the basis of travelling by sea but we will gladly book air travel from St.Just or Penzance at a supplementary cost (fares are subject to annual increases - we charge the difference between Scillonian III fare and the relevant air carrier).

Like most island groups, the Scillies have relatively few resident birds and the selection of nesting passerines is generally unremarkable, although an abundance of confiding Song Thrushes is an exception to their national decline and some familiar mainland birds such as Dunnock and Blackbird exhibit a few island differences in the brightness of their plumage or in the case of the latter, tone of bill colour. The colonies of seabirds around the archipelago are, however, of national importance and include Shag, Storm Petrel, Manx Shearwater, Puffin and Kittiwake. At times of spring and autumn migration Scilly is host to an astonishing diversity of birds seeking temporary rest and food on the islands. Few of these travellers make landfall intentionally but like the Shetlands in the north, Scilly appears to be in exactly the right place to provide succour for disoriented migrants carried over the ocean by unfriendly weather systems. The global movements of migrant birds are still imperfectly understood but it exercises the imagination to understand how individuals from North America, Siberia and Southern Europe can arrive on Scilly in the same week as so often seems to happen in the autumn! In the spring the rarities tend to be of Mediterranean origin such as Bee-Eaters, Golden Orioles or rare herons but even then surprises are frequent and recent occurrences at this season have included Terek Sandpiper, Tree Swallow and Calandra Lark! The regular arrival of unexpected vagrants has boosted the Scilly bird list to nearly 400 species, an astonishing total considering the size of the islands and the paucity of resident birds.

Although the focus of this tour will be birds, Scilly can boast many other natural history attractions for visitors. The flora is of great interest and includes many rare species which flourish in the largely frost free climate. Because of these mild conditions it has been possible to fill the famous Abbey Gardens on Tresco with delicate exotic plants from all over the world creating a collection that could not survive in colder climes. The White-toothed or Scilly Shrew is found nowhere else in Britain and whilst mainland mammals such as Fox and Badger are absent from the islands, the population of Grey or Atlantic Seals is of international significance. Migrant moths and butterflies visit Scilly in much the same way that birds do and a period of light southerly winds can often bring scores of Clouded Yellow butterflies or Hummingbird Hawk Moths to the islands. Much rarer vagrants also occur and the same fast-moving Atlantic fronts which deposit Neotropical landbirds on Scilly can also carry over spectacular Monarch butterflies.

The itinerary for our our tour will be completely flexible to allow for weather conditions and local reports. There will be a reasonable amount of walking each day but this will be at birdwatching pace and punctuated by regular stops. Included in the tour price are four full day visits to 'off-islands' which will entail catching the 1015 tripper launch from St. Mary's returning 1600-1700. These vessels carry about 70 passengers and fully conform to EC safety regulations. The journey time from St. Mary's is about 20-25 minutes.

Outline Itinerary

What's included.

Accommodation is in comfortable guest houses and the majority of rooms will have private facilities.

Only breakfast is included in holiday price; allow approximately £40 per day for lunches and evening meals.

Got a very good feel for the Isles of Scilly which I have wanted to go to for a very long time. Loved the flora and fauna and the knowledge the guides shared. We had a lovely group of people and visited all the inhabited islands, fitting in with the weather rather than sticking to a rigid plan. Very adaptable according to people’s needs and abilities. Couldn’t fault their attention to detail, communication and experience. M.S. Gloucestershire, Sept 23
We spent a week immersing ourselves in the natural environment of the Isles of Scilly. The guides were excellent and we felt that we had really explored the main animal and botanical highlights of the islands. The Naturetrek team ensured that we had a very comfortable and interesting tour. The hotel was great and the guides were really knowledgeable.  E.H. Derbyshire, May 22
An 8-day birdwatching holiday to the relaxing and beautiful Isles of Scilly. Amazing and unique islands, all of which have their own character. Stayed at lovely hotel, overlooking the harbour at St Mary's with outstanding food and service. The company of the group and tour leader added to the enjoyment. Good birdwatching. The best holiday I've had in years. Attention to detail, booking process and travel arrangements are good and a wide range of holidays and destinations available. The staff are efficient and friendly. On the tours, the tour leader are excellent birdwatchers but also good tour leaders, which is essential on these holidays.  C.B. Hampshire, Apr 22
Naturetrek holiday included birdwatching, information on all types of plants as well as exploring the various islands during the week. It was a fun action packed week. We also enjoyed the historical ruins on St Mary’s and the other islands. Despite Covid we felt very safe travelling with Naturetrek. Our guides were excellent, very knowledgeable about all aspects of the Scillies having travelled there many times before.  S.J. Gloucestershire, Sept 20
We were walking between 4 and 7.5 miles/day in beautiful countryside stopping at intervals to study mainly the birds and plants. It was an ideal way to go walking. We were very lucky with the weather which was mainly sunny with a cool breeze. We visited 5 of the islands. Naturetrek's organisation was excellent and Andrew the leader was extremely well-informed. G.L. Norfolk, May 19
A wonderful week of walking around the Scilly islands, with boat trips to all inhabited islands. Starting in the fog, we had a ghostly introduction to the islands, arriving in the mist on a ferry blasting its foghorn. Then the sun came out, and we walked at a leisurely pace all day every day (when not on a boat), pausing to bird-watch and identify flowers with our excellent Naturetrek guide. Boat trips took us to see shearwaters, storm petrels, seals, puffins, razorbills, guillemots and fishermen out catching pollack. The unique mix of colourful coastline, exotic flowers and a medley of birds, including some exotic migrants, is unbeatable so near to the UK mainland. I'm seduced by the Scillies! V.J. Monmouthshire
Overall, the holiday met all our expectations and our trip leader was an excellent guide and host from dawn to dusk. Mr & Mrs G. Berkshire
This was my first Naturetrek holiday and I chose a destination I knew a little as I wanted to try a wildlife holiday and also as a means to see more of the Scilly Isles. I certainly wasn’t disappointed (on either score!). The food in the bed and breakfast was of a very high standard. We visited a number of cafés during our excursions and this certainly added to the enjoyment of the holiday. Paul's knowledge of his subject and evident love of the islands was passed on to all of us on this trip and provided for a very happy week. Thank you. A.B. Devon
Great leader - Andrew was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Felt very looked after at all times. L.B. Surrey
I wanted to see the Isles of Scilly landscapes and to learn about the birds and natural history and life on the islands. I was more than satisfied. I was particularly pleased that there was more walking than in most nature-based holidays. The leader, Andrew Cleave's, breadth and depth of knowledge of natural history and of the Scillies and his pleasant manner added so much to my enjoyment of the beautiful islands. S.H. Flintshire
Interesting trips to the four islands. The tour leader had very extensive knowledge. E.K. Surrey
I really enjoyed the whole experience. Andrew was brilliant - he is so knowledgeable and interesting. The group size was good too - not too big or too small. Each day was different and we explored as much of the Isles as was possible but it never felt rushed. There was always plenty of time but enough activity. I loved it! Walking, boat trips, beautiful scenery, bird-watching, botany, history, sunshine - fabulous! M.D. Derbyshire
Naturetrek guide - A. Cleave was excellent. Excellent boat trips to see islands and flora and fauna. Walks around islands, identifying wildlife - the Scillies totally seduced me! The group was small and we all got on - so was very good socially too. It was absolutely great! Thank you. M.R. Devon
The fantastic knowledge, ability and infectious enthusiasm of our guide Andrew. Not only bird life & habitats, flowers' habitats, butterflies & moths, but also geology, archaeology and ice cream & chocolate cake. V.A. Oxfordshire
Lovely small group and excellent trip leader. A.A. Oxfordshire
Thank you once again for a most interesting and enjoyable holiday; a comprehensive experience of the Isles of Scilly. The success of this trip was particularly down to the excellent leader Andrew Cleave. His knowledge and insight are invaluable; a remarkable all round naturalist. Mr & Mrs C. Leicestershire
All very enjoyable. Excellent boat trip to visit the outer islands and view seals and seabirds. Whole trip was well planned and coordinated. Excellent, highly knowledgeable guide (Andrew Cleave) who was also good company and very helpful and amiable. S.C. Buckinghamshire

Tour Leader: Rob Mileto

Rob puts his interest in wildlife and nature conservation down to being brought up in a 'new town' where fields, ponds and hedgerows were constantly being turned into houses and roads. After graduating in Ecology and Nature Conservation he worked for the Shropshire Wildlife Trust and RSPB, and spent two years wardening Aride Island Nature Reserve in the Seychelles. He has also travelled extensively in east and southern Africa and undertaken voluntary conservation work and research in Tanzania, Namibia and Zimbabwe. He now runs a wildlife consultancy in Shropshire but disappears off on long holidays and advisory projects abroad whenever he can.

Tour Leader: Oliver Smart

Following a childhood fascination with the natural world, Oliver went on to study ornithology at the University of Birmingham during his mid-twenties. Alongside an emerging interest in photography, learning the art of bird ringing and volunteering for the Avon Wildlife Trust, BTO and RSPB, Oliver has put time to good use. His main passion is birds and through photography he has built a diverse collection of imagery, which is represented by both RSPB Images and Alamy. Combined with a desire to travel, Oliver has explored many parts of the world; his favourite destinations usually including a seabird colony or two, where the sight, sound, smell and opportunities for a photographer are second to none. His claim to fame to date though is an image he took in the Seychelles which has been used on a bank note!

Island Wildlife Tours

Islandwildlifetours.co.uk.

Discover the beautiful Isles of Scilly with resident ornithologist and naturalist Will Wagstaff. Watch the passage of migrant birds; learn about the interesting local history and beautiful flora and fauna as you walk the coasts and trails. If you’re visiting the islands for the first time and would like to discover some top birding spots with invaluable local knowledge, then this is the perfect company for you.

Will visits each of the inhabited islands weather and tides permitting. The walking is at a relaxed pace along the coastal paths and inland trails, stopping at the local pubs and cafes for lunch and afternoon tea (cost of this not included). The itinerary varies from week to week, but tours usually leave from either St. Mary’s quay or the Porthcressa Bank every weekday morning at 9:45, between March and October. For a full day guided walk the charge is just £14.00. For off-island tours, the boat fare needs to be added. Half-day tours are available at £7.00 per head (please call for group rates.) The St. Mary’s Boatmen’s Association is used for all off-island excursions; boat tickets are available from Will on the quay on the day of the tour.

There is no need to book in advance unless the reservation is for parties of 8 or more. Just meet on the quay to the left of the Association ticket kiosk where you will see the Island Wildlife Tours board advertising details of that day’s tour. wildlife boat trips scilly isles

White sand beaches, sharks and seafood: The Isles of Scilly is the UK’s most ‘tropical’ destination

T he Isles of Scilly are 140 islands, 28 miles off the Cornish coast. Five islands are inhabited with a population of just over 2,000 people, the southernmost settled one being St. Agnes.

Due to their position at the end of the North Atlantic Drift, they are bathed by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream and can often feel sub-tropical.

They don't generally experience the hot and cold temperature swings of the rest of the UK. Instead, with their exquisite blue seas, green landscapes and sparkling white beaches, the Isles of Scilly feel more Mediterranean, although perhaps not as warm as Cornwall .

The archipelago, however, is often battered by fierce storms that charge across the Atlantic. And as climate change bites, the islands are increasingly vulnerable to sea level rise.

Here’s how authorities are responding, and why you should book a trip to the scenic isles before they slip away - or better yet, as a spur to climate action .

How are the Isles of Scilly threatened by climate change?

According to scientists and the UK Met Office, sea levels will rise by one metre this century because of global heating. The Council Of The Isles Of Scilly warns it could be the worst affected place in Britain .

In the most extreme predictions, experts warn these islands may need to be abandoned as the climate crisis could make them uninhabitable.

Two of the smaller Scilly islands, Tean and Samson, were once inhabited but are now left to wildlife and tourists.

The highest point of the main island of St Mary’s is just 49 metres above sea level, and with the whole island just three kilometres in diameter, the consequences of coastal erosion are potentially catastrophic.

Hugh Town, the largest town on the Scillies, is just over three metres above sea level and at dangerous risk of increased flooding. There are fears it may be the first to go.

With coastal flooding threatening homes, roads, agriculture and marine life, it’s little wonder that the Council of the Scilly Isles has developed a plan to cope with climate change.

Their Climate Change Action Plan has now been published for public consultation and includes millions of pounds of improvements to sea defences. It also sets out how the Isles will achieve net-zero carbon by 2030.

Why should you visit the Scilly Isles?

The Isles of Scilly have recently been voted - and for the third time - the most scenic destination of outstanding natural beauty in the UK.

They are a must-visit place for nature lovers. With their dramatic coastlines, this is one of the only places in the UK where you can find puffins nesting alongside wild grey seals.

Sharks and dolphins can be seen while travelling between the islands and snorkelling offers the chance to see the stunning biodiversity of the underwater environment.

This incredible flora and fauna that is under threat from climate change is unique within the UK. It's no wonder the Isles of Scilly are working so hard to save it.

With its unusually warm weather, if you want to stay and experience the landscapes first hand then camping is a good option. Stay by the sea and unzip your tent to views of tropical-looking white sand beaches.

Food is another reason to visit Scilly and, unsurprisingly, seafood is what's on the menu.

Everything from lobster to crab and the British classic fish and chips is made with ingredients bought directly from fishermen at the harbour that morning. That also means that menus can change daily depending on what's available so you'll never get bored with the food that is on offer.

How can you get to the Scilly Isles?

You can fly by helicopter or plane, arrive by sea on the Scillonian III, or as part of a cruise .

Penzance Helicopters operate year-round from the purpose-built heliport at Eastern Green in Penzance, direct to either St. Mary's or Tresco Island.

You can travel by fixed-wing aircraft from Exeter (March to October only), Newquay (from May) and Land's End (year-round) arriving on the main island of St. Mary's with Isles of Scilly Travel.

The Scillonian III passenger ferry (March to November) is also operated by Isles of Scilly Travel. It leaves from Penzance once a day - generally departing at 9.15 am and arriving on St. Mary's at 12pm. The ferry then departs again at 4.30 pm arriving back in Penzance at 7.15 pm.

St. Mary's Harbour and Isles of Scilly Airport also welcome independent travellers to the islands so you can come in your own private plane or yacht.

If you want to go island hopping there are hundreds of trips a week on offer. Tripper boats from St. Mary’s are largely run by the St. Mary’s Boatmen’s Association.

St. Agnes Boating, Tresco Boat Services, Endeavour Rib Service and Seaquest Glass Bottom Boat all operate their own boat services, too.

You can visit the Scilly Isles all year round. See Visit Isles of Scilly for more information.
