Belize is home to the world's second largest living barrier reef. Its tropical islands are lined with tall coconut trees and surrounded by endless miles of coral reef. Jacques Cousteau immortalized the famous Blue Hole for its unique underwater stalagmites, and today it remains one of the most beautiful diving and snorkeling sites in the world. Experience this beauty with our Belize Eco Tours.

Inland you'll find endless emerald-green rivers, home to an astounding number of bird and wildlife species. Colorful birds come to Belize's tropical lagoons by the tens of thousands to nest. Primates of 2 species forage amongst mountains wrapped in colossal trees and forests carpeted with dazzling flowers and lush tropical foliage. Hidden in their midst are magnificent ruins of an ancient Mayan civilization, as well as a friendly melting-pot of cultural richness that combines true frontier-town thrill with modern environmental consciousness.

Travelers will find a time-locked land that still belongs to the rainforest and the sea, not to man; an untamed land that will touch you with awe and leave you gasping in wonder.

Whether it’s protecting vital jaguar corridors, rehabilitating injured wildlife, or monitoring endangered species populations, we believe in actively giving back to the wild places we cherish. Your journey doesn’t just create memories – it becomes a force for good.

4. Leave No Trace: Minimizing our Footprint

We adhere to strict ‘leave no trace’ principles. We pack out all trash, stay on designated trails, and strive to leave every environment as pristine as we find it. Our guides will educate you on how you can minimize your own impact, empowering you to be an eco-conscious traveler.

Wildlife & Scenic River Tours

Belize jungle river and inland tours.

Belize is well known for the conservation of its vast rainforest. There is no better way to delve into this untouched jungle than on our Wild and Scenic River Tours. On these river tours and with the help of our knowledgeable guides there is an increased possibility of spotting numerous wildlife species. Be with animals in their natural habitat as you flow around our winding rivers.

Belize Monkey River Tour

Monkey River Tour

  • À la carte Tour

An enticing tour of Monkey River awaits

Travel the Monkey River via boat to explore this extensive mangrove and wildlife habitat for monkeys, manatees, dolphins, tropical birds, and the occasional crocodile.

Begin your tour by riding through a lagoon surrounded by red mangroves along the coast of Belize. Here, be on the lookout for endangered manatees. As you reach the mouth of the Monkey River, your guide will point out numerous iguanas, turtles, and birds as you motor slowly up the river. Don’t be startled when you hear the bizarre sounds of the Black Howler Monkey as they communicate with each other to declare their territory. Nothing you read could ever prepare you for hearing these monkeys for the first time; you just have to experience it!

This tour is included as an option in the Belize Eco-Explorer Add-On .

Venture deeper into the jungle in the hopes of seeing the howler monkeys close up. Learn about the different plant and tree species as your guide leads the way along the nature trail (sometimes through water) further away from the river. The sound of a troop of howler monkeys as they burst out in a raucous chorus will tingle the hair on the back of your neck as you move along. It’s hard to believe that an animal that weighs only 30 pounds can sound as big as an elephant.

As your tour comes to an end, return to the mouth of the river and stop in at Monkey River Village for a genuine Creole lunch. After lunch, board the boat for your return.

Timetable:  24 hours noticed required Departure Time:  7:00am Return Time:  4:00pm Travel Time:  60 minutes each way Included:  transportation, certified guide, lunch, and taxes & fees

It can be purchased for US$175 per person with a 2 person minimum requirement on scheduled days (Thursdays) only; 4 person minimum requirement for out of schedule tour day.

Inland Blue Hole and The Belize Zoo

Discover the sapphire waters of the inland blue hole.

Start your day off by driving to the Belize Zoo to enjoy a close-up view of our local fauna in their natural surroundings which include over 150 animals such as jaguars, monkeys, toucans, scarlet macaws, tapirs, snakes, and many more. Feel free to take pictures and ask our professional tour guides any questions you may have.

Proceed to the Blue Hole National Park along the Hummingbird Highway on your way back to Hopkins. Enjoy a refreshing swim in the sapphire blue waters of the Inland Blue Hole, a sinkhole fed by an underground river. Upon arriving, take a short 15-minute hike to witness the bright hues of the sinkhole piercing through the green foliage. Beams of sunlight penetrate the thick jungle canopy above and reflect off the glass-like surface of the water. Birds are often seen resting on the over-hanging vines, specifically the jacamars and blue-crowned marmots. Look out for a variety of hummingbirds like the scarlet-rumped tanager and listen for the nightingale wren.

This sinkhole was formed by the collapse of an underground limestone cave. The pool itself lies at the bottom of this large depression in the jungle. From ground level it drops about 100 feet to the surface of the water and after which the water drops to 25 feet into an underground cave system. A thrilling yet refreshing swimming experience, you don’t want to miss visiting the Inland Blue Hole!

Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary

The lagoons, creeks, logwood swamps, broadleaf forests, and marshes of the Crooked Tree Sanctuary cover over 16,400 acres and are the home to countless and thousands of birds.

They include; Vermillion Flycatchers, Fork-tailed Flycatchers, Yellow-rumped Warblers, White-Tailed Kites, Hawks, Laughing Falcons, Meadowlarks, Swallows, and Herons just to name a few.

Crooked Tree is known for its most famous resident, The Jabiru Stork.

In all of Central America, Belize boasts the largest nesting home for these great birds.

In November, Jabiru Storks come to Crooked Tree from Venezuela and Mexico to nest in the tall pines of the lowland pine savannas.

Jabiru Storks are making Belize their home due to losing their habitat in Venezuela and Mexico.

Being one of the tallest birds in the entire Western Hemisphere, the Jabiru stands 5 feet tall and has a wingspan of up to 8 feet.

Its heavy bill is about 12.5 inches long and perfectly designed to catch fish, frogs, and snakes.

Once at the sanctuary, you will be introduced to your good train bird guide, who will elaborate more on the tour.

You will then be placed in a nice small boat with your guide, who will take you all over the lagoon, pointing out every wildlife in sight, particularly the birds.

Bottled water will be available for you.

Please bring along sunscreen, insect repellent, a camera (of course), and also a binocular for better viewing of those amazing birds.

This excitement could last up to three hours after which you will be transported back to your destination of choice.

We highly recommend this tour and genuinely believe that this experience could provide a renewed passion and appreciation for nature and the many wonders it could provide for your enjoyment.

Caye Caulker Marine Reserve

Enjoy the great variety of reef types with this snorkelling experience near Caye Caulker. The Belize Barrier Reef is like a gigantic wall running parallel to the coast.

Hol Chan & Shark Ray Alley

The Hol Chan Marine Reserve was the first of its kind on Ambergris Caye. Our captain will collect you at 8:15am or 1:15pm from your resort.

The Blue Hole, located in the ligthouse reef atoll, is one of Belize’s best kept secret. You have an early start at 5:30 am and a 2 hr boat ride to the first stop. It makes it all worth

After a road transfer, you will hop into a river boat for a scenic ride on the New River Lagoon. The hour long boat ride is a haven for nature lovers / birders since it boasts

The lagoons, creeks, logwood swamps, broadleaf forests, and marshes of the Crooked Tree Sanctuary covers over 16,400 acres and is the home to countless birds.

Traveler's Rum Factory

This rare tour takes you inside the factory that makes the famous “One Barrel” rum that every Belizean and most of our visitors simply love to taste.

Belize City Tour

On this fully guided tour, around historic Belize City, you will see many places of interest. These include the historic swing bridge over Haulover Creek,

The Belize Zoo

In 1983, upon completion of a film called “Path of the Rain Gods”, the movie’s production assistant, Sharon Matola, found herself with quite a few nearly tame animals

The Baboon Sanctuary

The Community Baboon Sanctuary is where you will find an abundance of the black howler monkeys. This protected area is located in a small village,

It could be just what you need!

Easy-to-use travel guide for Belize

Explore the Belizean Jungle: Top 12 Tours & Experiences

February 26, 2022 By Lorenzo Gonzalez 1 Comment

Belizean rainforest

Although most people visit Belize for its islands, atolls and reefs, jungle adventure tours quickly become part of everyone’s list of must-have experiences in Belize.

Related: Top Eco Adventures in Belize & The Best Belize Rainforest Resorts

The reason why is simple. With over 60% of Belize under forest cover, the country is filled with national parks, nature reserves, and wildlife sanctuaries. As a result, visitors are presented with many perfect opportunities to get up close and personal with nature.

Top ways to experience the Belizean rainforest

Tapir sign at the Belize Zoo

Whether you choose to stay at jungle lodges or beach resorts , I suggest you seek out the 12 destinations listed below. There, you will be able to explore the Belizean rainforest through activities such as hiking, nature walks, wildlife spotting, horseback riding, canoeing, spelunking, river tubing, zip-lining, and exploring Maya temples.

1. Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve

Rio on Pools in Mountain Pine Ridge, Belize

Located 2 hours south of San Ignacio, Mountain Pine Ridge is dedicated to preserving Belize’s native pine forest. It is a must-visit nature reserve since it has several of western Belize’s best outdoor activities , including sites that have scenic waterfalls, rushing pools, and mysterious caves. Visit for a day of hiking, swimming, and wildlife spotting.

2. Actun Tunichil Muknal

Family at ATM Cave

Listed by National Geographic as one of the top Sacred Places of a Lifetime , Actun Tunichil Muknal is an impressive Maya ceremonial cave located within the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve. The tour involves a 2-hour hike traversing dense rainforest near San Ignacio (and rivers) before arriving at the cave containing rare bloodletting altars, sacrificial human remains, and over 1400 catalogued Maya artifacts.

3. Xunantunich Archaeological Reserve

El Castillo is the tallest temple at Xunantunich

Located 15 minutes west of San Ignacio, Xunantunich is one of my favourite Maya sites . After crossing a hand-cranked ferry, lush jungle surrounds the temples. It’s a great spot for relaxing and spotting some wildlife: for example, a troupe of 8-12 howler monkeys can be regularly seen there. The main temple, El Castillo, rises 130 ft (40 m) from the ground offering spectacular views of nearby villages and Guatemalan mountains.

4. The Belize Zoo

Spider Monkeys at the Belize Zoo

Located 1 hour west of Belize City, the Belize Zoo is an animal sanctuary situated within 29 acres of tropical savanna. The zoo is unique in that it serves as a wildlife refuge for orphaned or rescued native animals of Belize and it is primarily used as an educational facility to promote wildlife conservation. Up to 45 native species can be seen here.

5. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

Hiking views at the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and Jaguar Preserve

Located 15 miles (25 km) southwest of Hopkins, the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is known as the world’s only Jaguar Preserve and a top jungle destination in Belize for hiking . Although visitors rarely see jaguars, the wildlife sanctuary is great for waterfall chasing and it is home to numerous plants and animals, including margays, deer, ocelots, pumas, howler monkeys, tapirs, and many birds.

6. Nohoch Che’en Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve

Cave tubing in Belize

Located 30 minutes southeast of Belmopan City, Nohoch Cheʼen is an archaeological reserve consisting of an extensive network of limestone caves surrounded by the dense rainforest of Cayo. With the Caves Branch River flowing through some of the caves, it is a popular destination for cave-tubing , kayaking, and spelunking. A zip-line canopy tour can also be done on-site, which is often added as a 2-in-1 adventure.

7. Mayflower Bocawina National Park

Waterfall Repelling at Mayflower Bocawina National Park

Just 12 miles (20 km) northwest of Hopkins is Mayflower Bocawina, a national park with over 7000 acres of pristine lowland and highland rainforest. Along with having the longest canopy zipline in Belize , the park is a great location for exploring mountains, waterfalls, walking trails, swimming holes, and Maya archeological remains. Bocawina is also known as a great spot for birding.

8. Chaa Creek Nature Reserve

horseback riding in belize

Set along the banks of the Macal River, the Chaa Creek Nature Reserve is a 400-acre privately protected area near San Ignacio that offers extensive ecotourism facilities to resort guests and day visitors. On-site highlights include a butterfly farm, natural history museum, medicinal plants trail, Maya organic farm, guided birding, horseback riding, and rainforest ATV tours.

9. Lamanai Archaeological Reserve

Lamanai's mask temple

On the banks of the New River in Orange Walk is Lamanai. It is particularly popular for its Mask Temple, an ancient Mayan ruin that fashions a 13-foot stone mask of a Maya king. But another major highlight of visiting Lamanai is its scenic 26-mile boat safari ride there, where visitors can witness countless wildlife encounters including seeing crocodiles, river otters, monkeys, and various exotic birds.

10. St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park

northern emerald toucanet in Belize

Located 12 miles (20 km) south of Belmopan City, along the Hummingbird Highway, St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park hosts 575 acres of jungle waiting to be explored. Often referred to as the inland Belize Blue Hole, the park is primarily known for its sapphire-coloured cenote, however, less explored are its Maya caves and well-maintained hiking trails that make jungle exploration very accessible.

11. Caracol Archaeological Reserve

2012 Winter Solstice in Belize

A little further south of Mountain Pine Ridge lies Caracol. Once rivalling Guatemala’s Tikal, it is the largest archaeological reserve in Belize. The biggest temple at Caracol is “Caana” or “Sky Palace”, a massive pyramid that rises over 140 feet above the jungle floor and is the tallest manmade structure in Belize. Lush rainforest surrounds the temples, allowing for wildlife adventures such as advanced birding .

12. Gallon Jug Estate

Safari-drive Wildlife Spotting Night Tour at Chan Chich, Gallon Jug

A bit north of Cayo in Orange Walk sits the Galon Jug Estate, a secluded 30,000-acre private nature reserve that is primarily only accessed by Chan Chich Lodge guests. Surrounded by thousands of acres of conservation lands, the reserve allows for numerous wildlife-viewing opportunities. The elusive jaguar, for example, is spotted about once a week there.

Map of top Belize jungle adventures

The Belize jungle adventures listed here are ranked based on popularity and accessibility. Most tours can be done on your own but it’s best to hire a Belizean guide if you want to have a better chance at spotting wildlife and gaining a deeper understanding of a local area.

This is your opportunity to explore amazing saltwater mangrove estuaries, encounter wildlife and learn about the flora and fauna from your nature guide.

Board your sightseeing motor launch directly from the Harvest Caye Marina to explore Mother Nature's amazing saltwater mangrove estuaries and its inhabitants. The seating in your motor launch is comfortable and the canopied top affords protection from the warm tropical sun, so just sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery. Your experienced captain will slowly maneuver your vessel out of the marina and onto the protected waters of the Placencia Lagoon. He will chart a course towards one of the shallow manatee hang-out areas. More often than not, manatees will be in these areas grazing and relaxing. Your knowledgeable onboard nature guide will provide you with a detailed narrative about the manatees and their life cycle in the tropical waters of Belize.

As your tranquil sightseeing tour continues traveling along the shore of the picturesque lagoon, your captain will enter one of the many mangrove estuaries. These placid creeks are lined on both sides with mangrove trees with their arching root systems and thick verdant green leaves as they provide habitat for many forms of life.

As the passage narrows, your guide will point-out numerous species of flora and fauna, ranging from marine life, to aquatic plants and trees. There will be many species of birds and at times, wildlife that that live on the tropical savannahs might be spotted - you never know what you might encounter.

Kick back, relax and enjoy a complimentary rum punch or water.

Before you realize it, your Captain is entering the marina and your enjoyable marine estuary and lagoon sightseeing tour is drawing to an end. You’ll have plenty of memories and beautiful photos to share with your family and friends.

I’ve been to quite a few dive resorts. Hamanasi is hands down, the best so far. Thank you for a wonderful time.

Wonderful warm staff, excellent guides, variety of inland tours, very comfortable rooms

Everything surpassed our expectations. We came here as new diver because we wanted an operation we could trust and we found that here.

Room beautifully decorated and clean! The entire staff was extremely helpful & courteous. Food was the best! Tour guides extremely knowledgeable!

Everything here is perfect for honeymooners and active travelers! Beautiful grounds, tons of interesting tours and good food & drinks to help you relax and enjoy yourself

“Golden was an excellent guide for birding, we saw a wide variety of birds”

This is my 6th Belize dive adventure in the past 18 years and my best ALL around experience.

Hamanasi helped introduce my family to the Garifuna & Maya people of Belize. Everything is so close – the mountains, caves, waterfalls, animals, ruins – this is such a peaceful country with rich culture and a people that cares about the environment. What a hidden gem! Thank you!

Wonderful stay, beautiful surroundings. The staff was unfailingly friendly and accommodating. Adventures were great and well organized!

Best dive experience we have ever had. Everyone top Notch. Best vacation ever!

Highlights of BELIZE: Birds and Monkeys Photo Safari

  • Rainforest and Mayan ruins full of birds and wildlife
  • Boat trips along rivers to seek water birds, raptors and monkeys
  • Learn professional  field techniques
  • Small group of only 6 participants plus two leaders

Description of BELIZE: Birds and Monkeys Photo Safari

This awesome Belize photography workshop will include in-depth, hands-on photo instruction as we photograph birds, monkeys, butterflies, flowers, reptiles and local culture.

This tiny country has over 600 species of birds and the highest density of Jaguars of any country in Central America. Rainforest, pine savanna, wetlands and rivers will all offer their own unique challenges for photographing as well as witnessing Kevin and Roger’s professional approaches to each opportunity.

Belize is one of the most environmentally conscious countries in the Americas. Thanks in part to its small population, over 60% of Belize’s 8867 sq. miles (about the size of New Hampshire) have been protected. This protection has allowed the birds and wildlife of Belize to continue to flourish. Belize is the last Central American stronghold of the majestic Jabiru, a stork that stands about 5 feet tall with an 11 foot wingspan, which nests in the savannas and wetlands of the north. Regional endemics such as Yucatan Jay, Yucatan Flycatcher and Yellow-lored Parrot may also be found in the pine-oak savannas. The tropical dry forest of northwestern Belize offers a multitude of species more easily found in Belize than anywhere else.

Length of Tour

Brief (tentative) itinerary.

Day 1 – Arrive/La Milpa.

Day 2 – La Milpa Lodge.

Day 3 – La Milpa Lodge.

Day 4 – Crooked Tree.

Day 5 – Crooked Tree.

Day 6 – Crooked Tree.

Detailed Itinerary – (the order in which we visit each location may vary)

Day 1 – arrive belize / rio bravo conservation area – la milpa lodge.

Arrive and transfer to he Rio Bravo Conservation Area (RBCA) with birding along the way. The RBCA covers 5% of Belize’s land area and is a privately held wildlife sanctuary and research area. The La Milpa Station, named for the ancient Mayan ruins found on the site, offers great food a excellent accommodations in the same forest as the famous (and much more expensive) Chan Chich Resort. The birding is incredible with Crested Eagle being seen regularly! This is also the area Belize chose to release a pair of Harpy Eagles donated from the breeding program in Panama.

Day 2 – La Milpa Lodge

Photography the property around Hill Bank is a great experience with bird and wildlife activity from dawn to dusk, and beyond, offering a multitude of species. Collared Forest Falcons, Ocellated Turkeys, Northern Potoos and lots of tanagers, honeycreepers and hummingbirds may be seen.

Night spotlighting may offer Spectacled Owl, Mottled Owl, Black-and-White Owl and a number of roosting passerines. We have also seen Jaguar, Margay, Jaguarundi, Kinkajou, Tapir and other mammals while spotlighting!

Day 3 – Hill Bank

Today’s photography will take us to the Lamanai ruins where the birdsong in the beautiful riparian rainforest is often interrupted by calls and chatters Black Howler Monkeys and Spider Monkeys! Here we will enjoy both landscape and wildlife photography as we explore the ancient structures amidst the shadows of the forest.

Day 4 – Drive to Crooked Tree Sanctuary / Crooked Tree Lodge

After breakfast we will depart for Crooked Tree having lunch along the way. Photo stops will keep us busy, especially at the Community Baboon Sanctuary (full of Black Howler Monkeys) and we will arrive at Crooked Tree Lodge late afternoon.

Crooked Tree Lodge sits quietly along the edge of the freshwater, seasonal lagoon. Here we can watch a multitude of wading birds, shorebirds and waterfowl. The surrounding savanna and wetlands offer excellent birds, including the majestic Jabiru stork.

Day 5 – Crooked Tree Sanctuary

We will explore the Crooked Tree Lagoon and Spanish Creek by boat in search of the many species of birds which inhabit this beautiful sanctuary. With low canopy logwood, turtlebone, provision tree and mangrove, good views of Yellow-tailed Oriole, Mangrove Vireo and Rufous-browed Peppershrike are very possible. The endangered Black Howler Monkey and Morelets Crocodile are also found here.

After lunch back at Crooked Tree Lodge, we will explore the upper end of the island, a pine-oak savanna. Yellow-lored (Yucatan) Parrot, Yucatan Woodpecker and Yucatan Jay can be found in this open habitat.

The maze of lagoons and islands sustains a huge variety of flora and fauna, including iconic African animals such as lion, elephant, leopard and hippo, as well as antelope like lechwe and the shy sitatunga.

The camps are set up in advance by a superb team of camp staff who cater to our every need. The tents are spacious with ensuite bush showers and toilet. This safari also offers the chance to step out into the bush on foot and paddle by mokoro (dugout canoe) through the delta’s pristine waterways.

DeWater, of Livonia, New York, joins a growing roster of UNE students who have been bestowed the prestigious scholarship. Since 2008, six others from the University have been granted Goldwater awards to pursue scholarly endeavors related to their chosen fields of study.

Established in 1986 in honor of former U.S. Senator and 1964 presidential candidate Barry Goldwater, the Goldwater Scholarship  was created to encourage outstanding college sophomores and juniors to pursue research careers and foster excellence in the fields of mathematics, engineering, and the natural sciences.

This year, the foundation awarded 508 students with scholarships out of an estimated pool of over 5,000 college sophomores and juniors from 446 academic institutions.

DeWater is a student in the Coastal Research Lab under Will Kochtitzky, Ph.D., assistant professor of  geographic information systems (GIS), and recipient of Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) funding from UNE to study the impact of climate change and sea level rise on coastal ecosystems in Maine, including salt marshes.

Her work in this area is part of nearly $944,000 in total grant funding to UNE from the Maine Natural Resource Conservation Program and the Maine Space Grant Consortium to monitor the restoration of salt marshes in Biddeford, and other nearby locations, in partnership with the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge.

“Katie DeWater is one of the rare students who displays both extreme competence and dedication to her studies and research,” Kochtitzky wrote in his Goldwater recommendation letter. “I know that Katie will be wildly successful in whatever she puts her mind to. She has already demonstrated how she is applying a suite of research techniques to improve our understanding of climate change and ocean processes, and she has shown on multiple projects that she will be a future STEM leader in the world.”

In addition to her research in Kochtitzky’s lab, DeWater is the coordination and administration lead in UNE’s Aquarium Science and Conservation Lab. In her role, she trains new lab members, monitors lab practices, and plans meetings for the lab, which breeds clownfish for sustainable aquarium practices and provides students with hands-on opportunities to learn fish husbandry.

Most recently, DeWater traveled to Belize as part of a coral biology course under Associate Professor Jeri Fox, Ph.D., to study the health of coral reefs and establish a program to monitor them over time.

DeWater told the Goldwater Foundation she aspires to earn a Ph.D. in marine biology and conduct research in coral biology and geospatial sciences to understand how coral reefs are impacted by climate change. She spoke with the Office of Communications about her research experiences, and her answers below have been edited for clarity and/or length.

What was your reaction to being named a Goldwater Scholar?

I felt so honored and excited to be named a Goldwater Scholar. It is an amazing feeling and sense of accomplishment to know that the time and effort I have dedicated to research is being recognized. Earning this scholarship has only reinforced my passion for research with the purpose of understanding the impacts of climate change on coastal ecosystems.

I am incredibly grateful for all the research opportunities available to me here at UNE that have allowed me to develop foundational research skills that I will apply to future research projects and my career. I am especially grateful for the support, guidance, and encouragement I have received from my professors, particularly Dr. Kochtitzky and Dr. Fox, who have taken the time to share their knowledge with me.

Are you part of any other academic programs at UNE?

I have minors in both GIS and applied mathematics .

Are you a member of any clubs or athletics?

I am a member of the Scuba Club, Ocean Club, and Earth’s E.C.O. (environmental club).

Tell us about your GIS research.

The purpose of my research in Dr. Kochtitzky’s lab is to quantify how salt marsh pools have changed since 2009 on Maine’s marshes. Our preliminary results have indicated that salt marsh pools are continuing to expand on Maine’s marshes as a result of human impacts and increased inundation due to climate change.

These results support the need for marsh restoration projects to help marshes be more resilient to climate change. I am currently in the process of preparing a manuscript of these results for publication.

How have you been able to apply similar research principles to other research projects?

In the fall of 2024, I took the coral biology travel course with Dr. Jeri Fox. For the travel course, we learned about corals throughout the fall semester in a regular class setting, and then in early January, we went to Belize for two weeks to see the corals in person, and I was part of a team that collected data on the health of corals.

To do this, we photographed fluorescing corals with an underwater camera and filter system that we built in UNE’s P.D. Merrill Makerspace . From these photos, we will identify specific wavelengths of fluorescence as an indicator of coral health. We also swam photo transect surveys of the reefs and are using those photos to generate 3D models of the reefs.

Additionally, using a GPS system that I helped build, we recorded the location of the specific reefs that were surveyed. The purpose of this research is to return to the same reefs each year to quantify changes in coral fluorescence and percent cover to monitor reef health as the climate changes.

How have these research experiences impacted you and your goals?

Ever since I first learned about corals and how they are threatened by climate change in fifth grade, I have had a passion for researching and restoring reefs. Having the opportunity to research coral health in Belize was an absolute dream come true for me. It was an incredible experience to be able to design our own field equipment and to conduct surveys on coral health.

Have you presented any of your research?

I presented the coral fluorescence research at the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Research Symposium and at the Student Innovation Showcase at UNE’S Portland Campus for the Health Sciences in spring 2023. I will present this research again at the 2024 CAS Spring Research Symposium.

I presented my research on salt marsh pool expansion at the SURE Symposium in the fall of 2023. I also presented this research at the Maine GIS User Group conference in Freeport and the 42°: The North Atlantic Network conference hosted at UNE’s Portland Campus in the fall. I will present this research again in April at the New England Estuarine Research Society conference in Freeport and at the spring CAS symposium.
