Ted Nugent Announces His Final Tour – ‘Adios, Mofo’

Motor City Madman Ted Nugent announced what he's calling his " last tour " in a video message to his fans on Thursday (April 13). He said he'll still play music and is currently working on new material.

The 74-year-old rocker has entertained audiences for over 50 years since his early group  The Amboy Dukes  began in the '60s. Nugent's self-titled solo debut arrived in 1975. He's since released 15 more albums, including last year's Detroit Muscle . Alas, his final, 14-date "Adios, Mofo" U.S. tour starts July 20 in Shipshewana, Indiana, and concludes in his original stomping grounds of Detroit on Aug. 11.

Watch the video and see the dates below.

"This is 'Adios, Mofo,'" Nugent says. "This is my last tour. Now, I'll always play music — I've got new records I'm gonna make. I can't wait to unleash some."

He continues, "I've got a [new] instrumental called 'Butter Fingers' that is just greasy. You can't eat barbecue ever again adequately without the song 'Butter Fingers' playing loud next to your brisket."

Elsewhere in the video, Nugent adds, "Thank you, everybody, for an incredible musical dream. The musical dream will continue but I'm not going on tour anymore because … hotels are jail. A hotel room is jail for me. My dogs won't allow me to not spend the day with them, so [my dogs] will go on the road with me."

Ted Nugent Announces His ‘Adios Mofo’ Farewell Tour

Ted Nugent has announced that his upcoming tour will be his last.

"This is 'Adios Mofo'. This is my last tour,” the outspoken rocker declared in a video posted to his YouTube channel and social media. “Now, I'll always play music. I've got new records I'm gonna make. I can't wait to unleash some of these new songs.”

“The point being is thank you, everybody, for an incredible musical dream," Nugent continued. "The musical dream will continue but I'm not going on tour anymore because hotels are jail. A hotel room is jail for me. My dogs won't allow me to not spend a day with them, so [my dogs] will go on the road with me this year. But the logistics are just too complicated when you have dogs and grandkids and kids and so many other things.”

Nugent went on thanking fans, while also promising not to reel in his oversized, and often controversial, personality.

“I’m radical. My music is radical. My attitude is radical. My middle finger is radical. My guitar sound is radical,” they guitarist declared. "The point is the American Dream has a soundtrack, and with my unbelievable musicians for 65 years, I have created the most fun, titillating, centrally stimulating soundtrack in the history of the world. This will be, like last year, in 2022, 'Detroit Muscle,' this will be the greatest, most intense, tightest, most dynamic, outrageously fun tour of my life. But 'Adios Mofo'."

Adios Mofo: Ted Nugent Announces Farewell Tour

The controversial rocker says his time on the road has come to an end

Adios Mofo: Ted Nugent Announces Farewell Tour

Ted Nugent says he is retiring from the road following a farewell tour this summer.

The “Adios Mofo” tour (his name for the tour, not ours) launches in late July with dates scheduled in Indiana, West Virginia, New York, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, and Michigan. Nugent is hyping the trek as “the greatest, most intense, tightest, most dynamic, outrageously fun tour of my life.” Tickets are available here .

Nugent cited his hatred of hotels and a desire to spend more time with family as the reason for his impending retirement. “I’m not going on tour anymore because hotels are jail. A hotel room is jail for me,” he said. “My dogs won’t allow me to not spend a day with them, so [my dogs] will go on the road with me this year. But the logistics are just too complicated when you have dogs and grandkids and kids and so many other things.”

Nugent also stressed that he isn’t retiring from music altogether. “I’ll always play music. I’ve got new records I’m gonna make. I can’t wait to unleash some of these new songs,” he said.

Though Nugent’s musical career has stretched nearly six decades, these days the rocker mostly finds himself in the headlines for his outspoken and often times offensive political hot takes . He still has a supporter in Tom Morello, however, who recently defended his friendship with Nugent by saying, “I reserve the right to be friends with anybody.”

Ted Nugent’s Adios Mofo ’23 tour brings solid classic rock to Tampa

Live Review: Ted Nugent’s Adios MoFo ’23 with Hillbilly Vegas- Seminole Hard Rock Casino, Tampa, Florida – July 16, 2023

Ted Nugent kicked off his  Adios Mofo ‘23 tour in Immokalee, Florida, on July 12 th . Like Peter Frampton, he announced the summer tour is his last. Since I was raised on 70s classic rock—and being from Metro Detroit—it was my duty to attend the Motor City madman’s concert in Tampa, Florida.

On Sunday, July 16th, the Seminole Hard Rock was filled with the odor of cigarette smoke and the clanking of slot machines as I made my way to the event center. There was a long line of Gen X’ers and Baby Boomers waiting to go through security and make their way to the merch table. With men outnumbering women, many were wearing concert t-shirts from past tours and “Nugent for President” shirts. The 1,500-seat auditorium, which has an intimate feel, filled up quickly.  They may have rolled in on wheelchairs and still sported long hair (albeit receding and silver), but one thing for sure—they were there to rock.

Starting promptly at 8 o’clock, Oklahoma-based Hillbilly Vegas kicked off the “Steady At the Wheel,” which earned them immediate respect from the audience. The audience hungry for classic rock showed approval with plenty of cheers and whistles. Lead singer Steve Harris remarked, “I’m sweating up here like a whore in church!”

With a lot of member interplay and solid rock music, the band fed off the crowd’s energy. Harris commended the audience on their enthusiasm compared to the previous night’s performance saying, “Tampa needs to tell Daytona how to be loud. Next time you go to bike week, tell them to get their shit together.”

Highlights included “2 Gun Town,” which pays homage to law enforcement. Harris said the song reached Number 18 on Billboard’s chart, much to his surprise due to the nature of the song’s lyrics. He then thanked Ted Nugent for mentioning the band on social media (“social media exploded after the kind words from him”), the crowd’s enthusiasm (“the audience becomes part of our set”), and asked, “Are there any hillbillies out there?” After a roar of cheers, the band played the catchy, Southern rock tune, “Shake It Like a Hillbilly.”

Overall, Hillbilly Vegas was the perfect choice as a support band with their brand of no-nonsense rock and roll. With harmonies and a full sound (the guitar player even switched to the keyboard for a honkytonk touch), they appeal to fans of Blackberry Smoke and followers of “New Classic Rock.”

During the removal of the band’s equipment and the unveiling of the massive tower of speakers, “Journey to the Center of Your Mind,” from Nugent’s early band the Amboy Dukes, played in the background. Prominently displayed on the stage were two flags with a gun saying “I Will Not Comply.” A group of concert-goers gathered near the stage to pose for selfies.

will ted nugent tour in 2023

At approximately 9:15 p.m., Nugent emerged through a thick cloud of white smoke, wearing khakis, a snake-print shirt, and a cowboy hat, performing his rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner.” Many rose to their feet. He breezed through “Gonzo” and “Storm Troopin” as the floor seat audience chose to stand through the entire show.

Known for his humor and rapid-fire banter, he spoke between songs about his guitar (“My guitar loves me. I’ve got the spirit in my fingernails”), his feelings about the state of the union (“Cluster Fuck 2023. How fucked up can the Uncle Sam pieces of shit get?”), and his assured he will still be performing (“Uncle Ted is still rockin’ his balls off”). He confirmed that the tour is his last (“Hotels are jail”) and dedicated “Wang Dang Sweet Poontang” to “all the girls.”

He switched guitars every few songs (“My guitars are breeding backstage”) and showed the energy level of a 30-year-old man. He was constantly moved about the stage and looked even more fit than last year’s performance. He appeared to have a glow of happiness, as he was clearly enjoying himself on stage and asked, “Can you feel the love?”

Performing with Nugent was bassist/singer Johnny Schoen, who had an impressive voice, and laid down the melody. Detroit drummer/backup singer Jason Hartless, who was working up a sweat, laid down the beat. Altogether, the trio sounded full and fleshed out.

There was fist-pumping and cell phones held high as Nugent sang “Come and Take It,” which morphed into the chant “Fuck Joe Biden.” He thanked the Hillbilly Vegas band for supporting the show and the audience saying, “You are the best people in the world if you are here with me because I’m a tough motherfucker.” A roar of cheers and whistles ensued while he dove into “Good Friends and a Bottle of Wine.” Between Nugent’s guitar tone and the melody, he truly took the audience on a harmonious journey.

will ted nugent tour in 2023

A special evening moment was when he spoke of moving to Chicago in 1965 and starting the band Amboy Dukes. It turned out the Dukes’ original lead singer Bob Lehnert was in the room and would make a special appearance with the band to perform “Route 66.” Lehnert sang and performed on the harp (exceptionally well, I might add) while Nugent put out classic blues licks.

Nugent paid homage to the bow-hunting pioneer “Fred Bear,” while playing a tiger-striped guitar. The song resonated with a few men, who stood, raising their fists in victory and solidarity.

will ted nugent tour in 2023

He switched out guitars (“Welcome Blackie! Blackie likes to play sexy guitar”) and had the whole audience dancing to “Cat Scratch Fever.” I believe the highlight of the evening was “Stranglehold,” with its bad-ass groove that sounded even better than ever. The raw energy on stage between Nugent, Hartless, and Schoen was electric—and will stay embedded in my mind for a long time. It took me back to my junior high days and I felt for a fleeting moment, young again.

While leaving the show, I conversed with a guy on the escalator. I asked, “So, what did you think of the show? Have you seen him before?”

The 57-year-old responded, “Well, this took me back to 1979 at the Tangerine Bowl with Aerosmith and Cheap Trick. I was 14 and was there with three girls! Nugent was swinging from a rope and playing guitar.”

There was no rope swinging tonight, but only solid rock and roll. That’s what it’s all about.

Watch: TED NUGENT Kicks Off 'Adios Mofo '23' Farewell Tour In Immokalee, Florida

Ted Nugent kicked off his "Adios Mofo '23" farewell tour Wednesday night (July 12) in Immokalee, Florida.

The legendary rocker's performance at the Seminole Casino Hotel, which is billed as Southwest Florida's premier gaming and entertainment destination, saw him backed by his current solo band consisting of drummer Jason Hartless and bassist Johnny Schoen .

Nugent 's setlist was as follows:

01. The Star-Spangled Banner 02. Gonzo 03. Stormtroopin' 04. Paralyzed 05. Free-For-All 06. Snakeskin Cowboy 07. Johnny B. Goode 08. Wang Dang Sweet Poontang 09. Come And Take It 10. American Campfire 11. Hey Baby 12. Good Friends And A Bottle Of Wine 13. Fred Bear 14. Cat Scratch Fever 15. Stranglehold 16. Great White Buffalo

In a recent interview with "THAT Rocks!" , the weekly YouTube series hosted by Eddie Trunk , Jim Florentine and Don Jamieson , Ted spoke about his decision to embark on what is being billed as his last-ever tour. Regarding why he doesn't want to spend time on the road anymore, Ted said in part: "Hotels are jail. I hate jail… I will always play music. The music still has fire. I still crave it. I've got new songs. I'm gonna go in the studio with these killer musicians that are always at my side. But traveling, I tell you… A hotel room is jail… The travel and the hotels… And I don't even have to go to TSA [ Transportation Security Administration ]; I mean, I gave the finger to them in 2009. If somebody doesn't send a jet, I don't go anywhere. My friends are better than your friends, 'cause my friends have jets. So, I'm not TSA and I'm not gonna let somebody fondle my Glock [gun] and ask me questions about gun laws. And hotels are so painful for me… So this tour, like the last 10, I will hub out of our Texas home to play gigs around there. I'll first start in Florida. So I'll hub out of our condo — [my wife] Shemane 's got a condo down there, so I can go to all those Florida dates. And then I come back to Michigan and go to Ohio and Indiana and Wisconsin and Illinois and Pennsylvania and Kentucky. And I'm able to hub, so I's still able to spend a lot of time with my kids and my grandkids and my dogs."

Ted went on to clarify that he is not retiring from playing live. "The fire, the music, it will always go on," he said. "I play my guitar every day… And I get to collaborate with the best musicians in the world. So it's always a challenge, it's always intriguing, it's always stimulating. I'm an old man — I'm 75 this year — but the stimuli factor… I hope that somebody else in this world is as stimulated by the music as I am, because it's still very much alive and well."

Asked if he will miss the audience and the live interaction on stage, Ted said: "Yes. Of course I will. But again, I won't miss it because I'll still do it… I'm not going out for months or even weeks. I'll do the occasional special events. I do a lot of corporate stuff… Yeah, I'm an energized son of a bitch, but I am 75, and I'm not swinging from ropes and I'm not wearing a loincloth and I'm not jumping off the amplifiers with my new knees. So I will miss it, but, again, I've got 12 grandkids and I don't wanna go away someday and not make an imprint on them, teach them about the important things in life. In a world that's really gone really stupid, I think my grandparenting responsibilities are more important now than ever."

Ted 's concert in Birmingham, Alabama was recently canceled due to a backlash surrounding his controversial political views. The legendary rocker's July 18 performance at Avondale Brewing Co. was scrapped one day before tickets were to go on sale via Ticketmaster . The decision to call off the gig was apparently made in response to about 1,000 comments which were posted on Avondale Brewing's Facebook page after the show was announced, as well as more than 150 comments on the venue's Instagram page.

Nugent 's self-titled debut album in 1975 was certified double platinum in the United States, while "Free-for-All" , "Cat Scratch Fever" , "Weekend Warriors" and "State Of Shock" all reached the Top 30 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Nugent has reportedly sold over 40 million albums and was named Detroit's greatest guitar player of all time by readers of MLive .

The conservative rocker, who been eligible for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame as a solo artist since 2000, has enjoyed a remarkably successful and eventful musical career over the past five decades, but his music is increasingly overshadowed by his political outbursts.

Nugent 's latest album, "Detroit Muscle" , was released in April 2022 via Pavement Music . The follow-up to 2018's "The Music Made Me Do It" was recorded with Ted 's most recent touring band, which included bassist Greg Smith and drummer Jason Hartless .

This past May, Smith , who had played bass for Ted for the past 16 years, announced his departure from the legendary rocker's touring band. He explained in a statement: "It was a difficult decision but one that I really had no choice in. With Ted no longer touring I had to accept an offer from a tour that will continue for the next several years. I tried to get someone to cover for me for the 2nd half, so I'd be able to do Ted 's tour, but I was unfortunately unable to."

Ted Nugent unveils final tour plans with Rochester performance

Ted Nugent has unveiled plans for what could be his final tour, and it includes a stop in Rochester.

On Monday, Nugent, whose career began six decades ago in his native Detroit, announced a summer run called the Adios Mofo ’23 Tour, which will come to Kodak Center, 200 W. Ridge Road, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 25.

Tickets (starting at $35.50 plus fees) go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Friday, April 7, at Ticketmaster.com . A presale starts on the site at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 6.

Nugent’s camp told the Detroit Free Press, “Ted is planning for this to be his last tour.”

However, in a statement, the 74-year-old rock guitarist said: “My amazing American Dream sure as hell ain’t over, and no way can I even see it from here! However, my fiery vaportrail of flamethrowing all American R&B and rock ’n roll has been so much damn fun I can hardly believe it. I will write The Book, but for now, it’s Adios Mofo ’23! Thank you thank you thank you all!”

Nugent made his name with Detroit’s Amboy Dukes in the late 1960s before embarking on a solo career that produced such rock-radio staples as “Cat Scratch Fever,” “Stranglehold” and “Free for All,” later scoring success in the ’80s and ’90s with supergroup Damn Yankees.

In recent years, he has grabbed headlines for his political views, particularly around guns and the Second Amendment.

He has been an outspoken supporter of former President Donald Trump and on March 25 performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" at a Trump rally in Waco, Texas.

Ted Nugent is one of the building blocks of rock as we learned it and still understand it today. His band paved the way for tons of double entendre and rather risque lyrics to accessorize hard, driving, and loud music underneath.

The band was nothing short of amazing in the 70s when they broke through with "Cat Scratch Fever" and took the world by storm. The screaming, insisting vocals and the pulsing beat was a perfect lure for an audience starved for an abrasive, coarse sound. Ted Nugent was there, and he brought it with determination and conviction.I had a chance to catch Ted Nugent on a recent trip to Lake Buena Vista which is right near Orlando.

My husband and I decided we'd give it a shot, and if it sucked we would head on out. We were happily surprised by not only the amount of people attending the concert but the variation in age, race, and all walks of life. An audience like that gives a band like Ted Nugent a future.

They took the stage, and between some songs told stories that related to the tune they were about to play or just had played. The whole performance felt very positive and very intimate.

When I looked at the DTE Energy Theatre's concert schedule this summer, Mr. Ted Nugent was at the top of my Must-See list. Despite my young age of 18, Ted and others within his genre have always captured my attention. My dad bought me the Nugent tickets for my 18th birthday. Despite the fact that the Motor City Madman is getting up there in age, this 66-year-old rockstar still has it. He plays the guitar better than anyone I know. He's got quick fingers, a fantastic band backing him, and a perfect sense of humor (even if it's a little...adult). He makes you laugh with his jokes bashing the president and he melts your face with his guitar shredding. I've listened to this man on the radio for as long as I can remember; from Cat Scratch Fever, to Stranglehold, to Fred Bear. This was the very first time I've seen him live and he didn't let me down. I loved every second of this concert. Even though I had lawn tickets for the hillside, everything was as perfect as I could have ever asked for. This was a great birthday present, and I'm glad I can add Uncle Ted to my list of Concerts I Must See AGAIN.

Awesome show. At 70 years old he is still the motor city madman. Great guitar work and his pro American attitude was exactly what I expected. If I had to pick something to complain about it would be that he didn't wear his native American headdress during "Great Whit Buffalo" like I have seen him do so many times. Not a problem...I left the Starland Ballroom with a smile on my fave and my ears ringing!

Great Show! Alittle repetitive and boring in the beginning but mid way through the atmosphere changed, the light show got brighter and better, the amps got louder, and they jammed like never before!! This 69 year old Rocker has more energy and enthusiasm then most Classic Class Acts. "Nugent" is a must see and definately an add to my list of future shows.

At 69 years old, Uncle Ted has still got the talent. He can still rock like he always has. The 3 man band makes a sound like no other. I remember in the 80's when he rocked thousands of us. The show was GREAT! If you get a chance to see him, spend the $$ and go! You won't regret it.

Had a great time, I just wish it had been longer. If you get the chance, go see him!

Nugent at Scoot Inn was incredible. Ted is in fine shape and still playing fantastic guitar. Stranglehold live was worth the trip by itself.

Never been to Scoot Inn - what a great venue. Small, intimate outdoor setting. Looking forward to going back.

It was never about starting a band. It was just a few old friends getting together to play music for fun. They would meet once a week at a small house deep in the Oklahoma woods they called Ringo Manor. They played old songs, told stories and laughed a lot. Before too long they started writing songs and as the story goes, when you put a bunch of musicians in a room together…they started a band.

Hillbilly Vegas   released their first song just a few months after their first jam session at Ringo Manor. A local DJ played that song during his air shift and then it got weird. A Nashville record executive was driving through the area at the very moment that local DJ was playing that first   Hillbilly Vegas   song. He called the station and just an hour later they were offered a record deal. That fast! Yes, the band is aware that happens to be one of the sub plots in the movie Wayne’s World but it happened. Just like that! Since that wild day the band has charted 5 country singles, along with 2 top 10 and 3 Billboard top 20 rock singles. HOLY CROSSOVER!

Hillbilly Vegas   has headlined their own tours as well as a support act for a who’s who in the music world including;   Blake Shelton ,   Travis Tritt ,   Alabama ,   Lee Brice ,   Blackstone Cherry ,   Wynonna ,   Kentucky Headhunters ,   Hellyeah ,   David Allen Coe ,   Joe Diffy ,   Granger Smith ,   Billy Currington ,   A Thousand Horses ,   Insane Clown Posse ,   Molly Hatchet   and many more. And to think it all started in a little house in Oklahoma called Ringo Manor.

About Ted Nugent

Ted Nugent plays possible Michigan swan song as farewell tour hits Sterling Heights

will ted nugent tour in 2023

Decades after he first stepped onto a Detroit stage, Ted Nugent may have played his final concert here.

On a fittingly lightning-streaked Friday night in Sterling Heights, the 75-year-old Detroit native offered a dependably high-octane set of testosterone-fueled rock for a packed Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre.

And there was the obligatory political orating, including sharply worded attacks on President Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. The stage included a pair of banners featuring silhouetted AR-15s and the inscription “I WILL NOT COMPLY.”

As always with a Nugent homecoming show, the evening came steeped in Michigan flavor, from the state flag that joined an American one onstage to the pre-show warm-up music that featured songs by Bob Seger, Kid Rock, Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels and more. The stage backdrop featured Nugent’s familiar logo alongside the phrase “Detroit Muscle.”

Since announcing his Adios Mofo ’23 farewell tour this spring, Nugent hasn’t announced a definitive end date, saying that while he’s not done with music, he is certainly winding down his road career. “A hotel room is jail for me,” he said in April.

So as things stand, Friday’s Sterling Heights show and Wednesday’s stop in Saginaw would be Nugent’s final Michigan tour dates.

He didn't acknowledge that possibility onstage Friday, and in fact claimed he's having a blast performing.

"I've been doing this since I was born in Detroit, and funny thing is, man, I enjoy it now more than ever," he said. "I'm an old (guy), but I persevere."

Friday's set list stuck to the script of Nugent’s shows in recent years, kicking off with his instrumental performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” before focusing on the guitar-heavy ‘70s stuff that made his name, punctuated by his distinctive molten solos full of fast-bending notes and searing tones. If Nugent is indeed ready to take his final onstage bow, it’s not because his guitar playing is suffering.

The night’s only latter-day number — “Come and Take It” from last year’s “Detroit Muscle” album — was refitted into a “F--- Joe Biden” chant.

Nugent dropped the Tarzan entrances and onstage buffaloes years ago, but his natural-born showman was nevertheless on display Friday, even if most of the energy was now channeled to his guitar playing and lively between-song chatter.

Armed with his trusty ’62 Gibson Byrdland guitar (built in Kalamazoo, as he pointed out), Nugent was joined by 28-year-old Fraser native Jason Hartless on drums and by bassist Johnny Schoen, who also provided backing vocals and took lead on the more demanding lines of “Stranglehold.”

It wouldn’t be a Nugent appearance in 2023 without some incendiary political pronouncements, though he saved them Friday for late in the show.

Nugent, who in recent years has sparked more headlines for his outspoken conservative views than for his music, got on a roll.

If people had heeded his political guidance all these years, he said to cheers, Joe Biden would be in “a straitjacket in a cage” and Hillary Clinton would be in front of “a firing squad.”

Nugent had profane epithets for political leaders in Washington and Lansing, and spoke of “jackbooted thugs in the government and the media.”

“It’s so good to see my crowd here — there’s only men and women here tonight,” he said in a clear reference to the rise in nonbinary gender identification. “That’s so beautiful: the men and the women.”

Nugent saluted the military members and law-enforcement officers in the audience while encouraging them to push back: “If you’re a sheriff deputy, if you’re a city cop, if you’re a state trooper, if you’re in the military, and your boss tells you to do something against your oath, arrest that m-----f-----."

And he defended his frank approach.

“I’ve always been a big mouth, because I’m a free American,” Nugent said. “And all Americans ought to be just like me.”

The 90-minute show featured the Nugent staples: “Motor City Madhouse,” “Free-For-All,” “Wang Dang Sweet Poontang,” “Cat Scratch Fever” and “Stranglehold.” “Snakeskin Cowboys” offered a slinky feel and expressive guitar solo, while “Hey Baby” came with its own changeup groove, with the Amboy Dukes’ “The Great White Buffalo” eventually ending the regular set.
