The Top 10 Things to Do in Mount Abu, Rajasthan

Rajasthan's Only Hill Station

abu rajasthan trip

Tim Makins/Getty Images

Mount Abu, at 4,000 feet (1,220 meters) above sea level, is the highest peak in the Aravalli mountain range and Rajasthan's only hill station set up by the British. It's situated close to the Gujarat state border, approximately five hours drive from Ahmedabad and four hours from Udaipur. The British took a liking to Mount Abu because of its comfortable climate, and they relocated the headquarters of their political Rajputana Agency there from Ajmer in 1857. The imposing Rajputana Residency building, renamed Raj Bhawan after the British left, is now occupied by the Rajasthan Governor during summers. Mount Abu has a reputation as a honeymooner's haven but Indian families flock to the area as well. It remains an offbeat destination for foreigners though. There are plenty of diverse things to do in Mount Abu, particularly for adventure and nature enthusiasts. Here's the pick of them.

Enjoy Water Sports on Nakki Lake

uniquely india/Getty Images

Sacred Nakki Lake sits in the center of Mount Abu. According to Hindu mythology, the gods dug it with their nails while attempting to escape from a demon. The shops and restaurants in the vicinity of the lake draw a crowd in the evenings. However, boating is the big attraction, especially for families with children. It's not well regulated and demand is high during peak season from April to June. Hence, it's best to get there early in the morning to grab a boat and negotiate a rate. Expect to pay anywhere between 50 rupees to 300 rupees per person for a pedal boat, depending on the season. Row boats with oarsmen cost more. Aqua zorbing also takes place on the lake.

See the Town from Toad Rock

Veena Nair/Getty Images

Perched above the southern bank of Nakki Lake, landmark Toad Rock provides a panoramic view over town. For peace, the lookout is best visited early in the morning. It can be reached by following the beginning of Bailey's Walk trail, named after a British magistrate, from near Raghunath Temple at Nakki Lake. Those who are interested in the teachings of Swami Vivekananda will want to stop by Champa Cave, about half way up the trail to Toad Rock. The Swami is said to have meditated there for a while in 1891.

Soak Up the View at Sunset Point

anand purohit/Getty Images

Bailey's Walk meanders all the way from Nakki Lake to Sunset Point. However, it's quite long and moderately strenuous when going uphill. Alternatively, take Sunset Point Road, west of the Polo Ground. Shared jeeps ferry passengers from the Polo Ground entrance to the parking lot near Sunset Point, which features a steel Eiffel Tower replica (go figure). From there, it's about a 15 minute walk, horse ride, or push-cart ride to the point. Don't expect to have the view to yourself though! The place becomes carnival-like with hordes of people, amusement park rides and pushy vendors. Arrive at least 45 minutes before sunset to beat the rush and claim a good position. You may want to skip the experience though, as many tourists complain that it's over-hyped and the entrance fee is unreasonable.

Marvel Over the Exquisite Jain Temples

Chris Protopapas/Getty Images

Way before the arrival of the British, influential and wealthy devotees of the Jain religion from Gujarat built some of the finest Jain temples in India (and the world) at Delwara near Mount Abu. The temple complex was constructed between the 11th-13th centuries and is undoubtedly Mount Abu's most spectacular attraction. Its five temples are devoted to various Jain tirthankara s (saints). The two biggest temples (Vimal Vasahi and Luna Vasahi) each took thousands of artisans about 14 years to complete, and have astonishing intricately carved marble work. Sadly, photography isn't allowed. The temples are open to the public daily from noon until 6 p.m. All leather items, footwear, phones and cameras must be left outside at the paid storage counter. Furthermore, menstruating women are considered to be unclean and shouldn't enter the temples. Shared jeeps run to Delwara from Chacha Museum Chowk in Mount Abu's market area.

Go on a Pilgrimage

Exotica.im/Getty Images

Mount Abu is linked to various sages and seers in ancient Hindu texts and mythology. Such holy heritage means that many temples and religious places exist there. The Dattatreya cave temple on top of Guru Shikha peak is the most frequently visited one. It houses the footprints of guru Dattatreya, the guru of yogis and ascetics. He's believed to be an incarnation of the divine trinity (lords Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva). There's also a temple belonging to his mother, Ahilya, nearby. The cave temple of Arbuda Devi (also known as Adhar Devi temple) is another popular Hindu temple, situated just outside town on the way to the Jain temples. Legend has it that serpent goddess Arbuda saved the life of Lord Shiva's bull, Nandi, on the mountain. The great sage Vashistha lived at Mount Abu and is said to have performed a ritual sacrifice that created the four warrior Rajput clans. There's an ashram and Gaumukh temple dedicated to him. In addition, within the ruins of Achalgarh fort, the 9th century Achaleshwar Mahadev temple is where Lord Shiva's toe is unusually worshiped.

Explore Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary

Max Paddler/Getty Images

The great outdoors beckons at Mount Abu! The Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary covers nearly 116 square miles (300 square kilometers) of the mountain and has many rare plants (including medicinal plants), plus valleys, peaks and forests. There are numerous walking trails of various distances and difficulties in the sanctuary, ranging from half-day to longer multi-day expeditions. Rock climbing, rappelling, caving and camping are also possible. Hiking & Trekking Company conducts popular guided walks and day hikes. Rajasthan Adventure and Nature Academy is recommended for adventure activities such as rock climbing. Contact Mahendra ‘Charles’ Dan of Mount Abu Treks for bespoke treks and village visits. The cost of entering the sanctuary is 50 rupees for Indians and 300 rupees for foreigners.

Spot Crocodiles at Trevor's Tank

If you don't want to go hiking through Mount Abu Wildlife Sanctuary, you can easily visit Trevor's Tank to spend time amid nature. This huge reservoir was made by British engineer Colonel G.H. Trevor, who bred crocodiles, in 1897. It's only 10 minutes from the Jain temples at Delwara, on the way to Dattatreya temple. The tank is a renowned picnic spot, and there are walkways and viewing stations around it for wildlife watching. Large crocodiles can often be seen resting on the banks during November and December. Birdwatchers should head to Salim Ali Point for standout sightings. The entry fee is 50 rupees per person for Indians and 100 rupees for foreigners, plus additional charges for vehicles.

Have Fun at Thrill Zone Adventure Park

Thrill Zone Adventure Park

About 15 minutes further along the road from Trevor's Tank, Thrill Zone Adventure Park offers an enticing array of almost 25 fun activities. Some of them are zip-lining, ATV rides, dirt bikes, horse riding, rappelling, land zorbing, paintball and archery. The park has been well-developed, and is safe and professionally managed. It's open daily from 9 a.m. until sunset. The cost is 250-350 rupees per activity, with discounts provided for multiple activities. There's also a camping ground for those who wish to stay overnight.

Meditate with the Brahma Kumaris

mds0/Getty Images

If you're spiritually-inclined, you can learn about and try Raja Yoga meditation at the global headquarters of the Brahma Kumaris (Daughters of Brahma) in Mount Abu. The beliefs of this spiritual community stem from Hinduism but are distinct from it. The Brahma Kumaris focus on soul-consciousness—that is on people's identities as souls, as opposed to bodies and the associated labels. According to them, souls enter bodies on earth to experience life and grow. Their teachings aim to create a shift from outer material dependency to inner awareness. This will uplift souls and bring about a spiritual re-awakening of humanity. The Brahma Kumaris' headquarters has a number of campuses. The recreational Peace Park, close to Thrill Zone Adventure Park, is ideal for beginner meditation. Guided tours and short films about the concepts of Raja Yoga are provided there. Spiritual retreats and talks are offered at Madhuban , in Mount Abu town, for those who want a more immersive experience. The mortal remains of the Brahma Kumaris' founder are laid to rest there. Serious spiritual seekers can stay at Shantivan Ashram at the base of Mount Abu.

Attend a Festival

Keren Su/Getty Images

Mount Abu has two annual tourist festivals that celebrate the culture of the region. The Summer Festival coincides with the occasion of Buddha Purnima (in April or May each year), while the Winter Festival always happens from December 29–31. Attractions include folk performances, ballad singing, bands, processions, kite flying, and sports competitions.

"A beautiful hill station in Rajasthan"

Mount abu tourism.

The only hill station of Rajasthan , Mount Abu is located in the Aravali range. The most important attraction, however, are undoubtedly the Dilwara temples , which is one of the most stunning pieces of architecture in the country.  Travellers can enjoy calm and relaxed boating in Nakki Lake, and a view of the sunset from the vista points. The restaurants and eateries around the lake are great places to eat local food and chill. The highest peak of the Aravali Range - Guru Shikhar also lies in Mt. Abu. Mount Abu Forest Sanctuary with an abundance of flora and fauna is also a highlight.

The exceptionally intricate architecture of the Dilwara temples are of course the main attraction here, and you can easily spend hours wondering how these temples were built over 2 centuries, almost 1000 years back. The temples were specifically made so that they are plain from the outside to avoid the attraction of plunderers, and have withstood the test of time extremely well.

Rajasthan’s only hill station nestles among green forests on the state’s highest mountain at the southwestern end of the Aravalli Hills and close to the Gujarat border. Quite unlike anywhere else in Rajasthan, Mt Abu provides Rajasthanis, Gujaratis and a small number of foreign tourists with respite from scorching temperatures and arid terrain elsewhere. An Insight into Mount Abu Tourism

Dilwara Jain Temples are the Jain temples that were constructed between 11th to 13thcentury AD. Some consider its craftsmanship in marble to be superior to that of the Taj Mahal. The main temple complex consists of five different temples dedicated to the Jain Tirthankaras. Dilwara temples may be visited 365 days a year from 12noon till 5pm. As per legends, Nakki Lake was created by the Devtas by digging up with their nails or, nakh. It is the only Indian artificial lake at such a high altitude of 3937ft approximately and one of the top sightseeing places here. It is considered sacred by the local tribes who perform rituals here. Situated at the heart of Mount Abu, it is the cynosure of attraction in the evening. You can enjoy boating or, just relaxing on its banks to unwind in peace. You can watch the sun going down from this place which lies to the south west of the Nakki Lake. The panorama triggers the spirits of festivity as you see the lush green plains thousands of feet below. The fort of Achal Garh was built by Rana Kumbha in the 15th Century. Within it lies the Achaleswar Mahadev Temple. Unlike in other temples, here the great toe of Lord Shiva is worshipped. The idol of Nandi is made of five metals such as gold, silver, copper, brass and zinc. This place is considered miraculous and is among the must see places. Guru Shikhar is located at an altitude of 5676 feet, this is the highest point in the state of Rajasthan. Here is the Temple of Dattatreya, an embodiment of Lord Vishnu. The footprints of Guru Dattatreya are preserved here on a rock. This spot must be included by your travel guide.

You need to climb 365 steps to reach Adhar Devi Temple within a rocky cleave. Goddess Durga is worshipped here. During Navratri, this temple gets flooded with devotees. The Gaumukh temple was the abode of Rishi Vashishtha. As per the folklores, the Rishi had performed a religious ceremony here that created the four major Rajput clans. This temple has a spring which emerges from a rock, shaped like a cow’s face. Rishi Ved Vyas had suggested Dharma Raj Yudhistir to spend one night at this Ashram. In turn Yudhistir could gain the blessings equivalent to donation of one thousand cows. If you wonder what are the things to do in Mount Abu, take a food break here or, buy memoirs from the stalls around. Trevor’s crocodile park was created by a British engineer, Trevor built a huge tank which is used for breeding crocodiles. This spot is ideal for picnic. It is the hub for watching nature’s creatures like the birds and the wild animals in their natural habitat. It stands out among the places to visit on a holiday. If you are a wildlife enthusiast, visit the wildlife sanctuary that is about seven kilometres long and three hundred metres wide. In 1960, the place was declared as a Wildlife Sanctuary. It has thorny forests at the foothills and evergreen forests at higher altitudes. It houses 112 plant families, 820 species and 3 species of wild rose. The sanctuary ranks high among tourism places owing to its rare composition.

The Ultimate Guide To Mount Abu, A Scenic Hill Station In The Land Of Sand

The Ultimate Guide To Mount Abu, A Scenic Hill Station In The Land Of Sand

Do you know the name of the largest state in India? Well, no points for guessing; it’s Rajasthan — the land of all things grand. For many, the word Rajasthan automatically brings to mind vast stretches of glistening dunes, camel rides, and mesmerizing forts. But there’s more.

An image of camels walking across the Thar Desert, Rajasthan

As the largest state of India with a variety of landscapes, Rajasthan has it all. From big, beautiful lakes to grand Havelis, from sunsets on sands to national parks—the platter is actually as diverse as a big Rajasthani thali.

This is the image of a traditional Rajasthani thali

If Rajasthan has got your attention, then without further ado, let’s present to you its only hill station—Mount Abu. Located in the Sirohi district of Rajasthan, this isolated massif of the Aravalli range has an elevation of 4000 ft. Due to its height, lush greenery and surrounding lakes, Mount Abu is a respite from the scorching summer of Rajasthan.

A Wonderful Mix Of History And Mythology

In the Puranas, this area was referred to as ‘Arbudaranya’ i.e., the forest of Arbu. So clearly, the word Abu has its roots in ‘Arbu’. According to mythology, Arbuda was a serpent who saved the life of Nandi, Lord Shiva’s bull, on this mountain.

In 1311 CE, Rao Lumba of the Deora-Chauhan Dynasty conquered Mount Abu from the Parmars. Later, the British took it on lease from the Maharaja of Sirohi to set up their base away from Rajasthan’s dry, hot summer.

If history, mythology and nature interest you, you’re surely in for a treat in Mount Abu.

This is how I made the most of 2 days in Mount Abu

Photo of Shilpi

Mount Abu is one of the most beautiful and enthralling cities in Rajasthan that offers you adventure and relaxation at the same time. Surrounded by surreal hills and abundance of natural beauty, this quiet little hill station is a favorite spot for honey moon couples or short vacations with family. Located 163 km from Udaipur and 233 km from Gujrat, Mount Abu has a mixed culture influence of Rajasthan and Gujarat both. Here are few tips and must do's while planning a trip to Mount Abu.

1. Don't miss the sun rise

Photo of Mount Abu, Rajasthan, India by Shilpi

Mount Abu is known for its spectacular sunrise. Usually it's the other way round that people like sunsets. But here for me the experience was different.

2. Rent a bike - The best mode of transport in Mount Abu is a rented vehicle. Bikes are rented at Rs 300 per day and cars around Rs 500-1000. From authorized agents to pan waalas, almost all shop keepers rent out two wheelers. From Honda Activa to Bajaj Pulsar, they have it all. They keep your DL as security while you enjoy the day out on two wheeler. In case your two-wheeler breaks down or troubles you, the shop keeper would be just a call away. The authorized agents might just refuse to rent bikes in the middle of the day and say that booking a bike should be done at 8 am only. However, walk a little further and every shop keeper will ask if you need a bike. Make sure you fill the tank with petrol. (Ofcourse you pay for it). Since Mount Abu is a small place, sightseeing on two-wheeler is most suggested here. All you need is a DL.

3. Do visit Dilwara Jain Temples

The 1000 year old temple can put Taj Mahal to shame! It is gorgeous. Every nook and corner boasts of architectural prodigies. Built on marbles, the temple is dedicated to Jain Gods and leaders. The whole premises houses a cluster of temples built in different eras. The main complex has temple with sculptors of Jain Gods in a row. Few enclosures have preserved aesthetics from ancient times that were excavated. The temple premises is open to public 12 noon to 5 pm. Camera and mobile phones are not allowed inside. Perhaps that's the only turn off where you wish for a camera! The priests would tour you through the temples narrating the history and facts of temple.

4. Nakki Lake

The lake draws a lot of crowd since this is only lake and is highly commercialized. Not only boat men, but small time vendors around the lake also earn well owing to huge footfall. From eating stalls and magic shows to toys for kids and fish food, you will find everything here.

5. Sunset Point

Photo of This is how I made the most of 2 days in Mount Abu by Shilpi

Not very far from Nakki Lake is a hotspot every evening. As the name suggests, this place is to view the setting sun behind the mountains. You can ride upto the parking spot beyond which no vehicles are allowed. You either walk, mount a horse back or hop onto a manual cart which they call helicopter. The kilometre long road is steep and tests your endurance big time. Once you reach the spot, take a flight of stairs to a hilly area. That is Sunset point where Sun seems to be close and you soak in its warmth. Mind you, the place would be very warm during summers. We managed to escape the heat because of the pleasant weather.

Trevor's Tank

5. Trevors Tank

Photo of Trevor's Tank, Mount Abu, Rajasthan, India by Shilpi

This place is for the adventure lovers and wildlife junkies. Trevor's Tank is a breeding lake for crocodiles in the middle of a forest. Spooky enough? I don't know why is it called a tank! It's a lake and the crocs do come out for breakfast. Pay 30 INR per person as entrance fees, another 30 for the two wheeler and ride into wilderness. The bumpy, broken, raw road running through the forest is a little more than a kilometer . You gotta be really careful while driving on this road! I was scared of carnivores waiting to prey on us.

The road into the wilderness

Photo of This is how I made the most of 2 days in Mount Abu by Shilpi

The silence of the forest is deadly. After the kilometer ride, park your two-wheeler at the lake entrance.

Entrance of the view point

That's husband trying to locate crocs in the tank

Photo of This is how I made the most of 2 days in Mount Abu by Shilpi

Watch fish and occasionally crocs in the murky water. The care taker of the area revealed there are five crocs in the lake and they are visible during morning when they are fed. Damn! We were late to reaching there? The place turned noisy with people coming in and the chances of spotting crocs turned bleak. Obviously, more the noise, more the reptiles avoid showing up. A single croc was visible at quite a distance basking in the Sun. Meanwhile as we consoled ourselves watching beautiful fish and enjoying cool forest breeze, a large croc suddenly appeared in the water, getting people excited. Looked like it hated the paparazzi and quickly disappeared under water.

Photo of This is how I made the most of 2 days in Mount Abu by Shilpi

There is a nice vantage point built on a hill in the forest. Only the strong hearted can go there seriously. The isolated staircase shadowed by overgrown trees is frequented by langurs.

Photo of This is how I made the most of 2 days in Mount Abu by Shilpi

Usually the monkeys never harm you, but you can never rely on wild animals' instinct. While husband went to the edge of the vantage point to take pictures of the lake and the croc, I stood far behind him on a raised platform taking panoramic shots. My heart skipped a beat when I turned around and saw two mongoose like creatures on the stairs. Thankfully they crept away before I could react. Gosh, I cursed my adrenaline rush. What if a panther or big cat had attacked us? We were no way prepared! I urged husband to leave the place after the goosebumps moments.

6. The lively market place

In the market, gorge on warm kesar milk. It has less of sweet content and great aroma.

Almost real

Some tips for first time travelers:

-While renting two-wheelers, please wear helmets. Road safety is essential anywhere. Keep the bike owner's number handy with you.

-When you enter Mount Abu, at the toll the private bus would charge Rs 10 per person as toll adding fifteen more minutes to the waiting time. Well that was upsetting. Wasn't toll supposed to be a part of the ticket fare? Plus something like should be collected from passengers in advance, not on the spot!

-Mount abu was surprisingly pleasant in October and both of us suddenly caught fever. Carry a light jacket/jersey. Would be useful while cruising on bikes.

-You can go to Gurushikar Observatory as well which I did not include in my itinerary.

P.S - My trip to Mount Abu was in October 2016

UAE air taxis: Archer Aviation, Abu Dhabi Investment Office set to launch electric aircraft in 2025

Archer Aviation and ADIO enter deal for in-country manufacture of aircraft and vertiports

Stock-Archer-Aviation

Dubai: Launch of full-scale air taxi services in the UAE is coming closer on the horizon with a new ‘framework agreement’ between Archer Aviation and Abu Dhabi Investment Office.

This will see Archer, which is into electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, take on in-country manufacturing, launch operations and training required before the services are launched.

As things stand now, the plan is to have these services up in the air ‘as soon as next year’.

“Archer has partnered with Falcon Aviation and Air Chateau to be our in-market air taxi operators,” said Adam Goldstein, founder and CEO of the company. “Falcon Aviation and Air Cheateau have locations in both Emirates and ADIO has commited to building additional vertiport infrastructure in Abu Dhabi

“Early operations will utilize a handful of aircraft. As manufacturing ramps up, the number of aircraft flying in market will scale accordingly.”

With the framework agreement in place, ADIO will support the development of vertiports, in collaboration with Archer and other air taxi operators, in locations throughout Abu Dhabi. Doing so would enhance the ‘urban air mobility infrastructure necessary for Archer to scale operations’.

Opening up whole new ways of travel

It was last year that the possibilities of air taxi services between major cities in the UAE using eVTOL aircraft showed up realizable business possibilities. These aircraft would operate at cruising altitude of 2,000 feet and the time for a flight will be between 10-30 minutes.

“Abu Dhabi is leading the way in accelerating the launch of electric air taxis globally,” said Badr Al-Olama, Director-General of ADIO.

“We are excited to support Archer toward establishing its international headquarters in Abu Dhabi, and to develop a comprehensive investment framework that will accelerate its progress towards manufacturing and operating its ‘Midnight’ aircraft in the UAE.”

The Archer Midnight aircraft can fit four passengers and a pilot on any one trip. Archer is flying Its Midnight prototype regularly at our flight test facility in Salinas, California,” said the CEO. “And on track to complete the first piloted, conforming eVTOL aircraft in the industry later this year.

“Our data science team does a tremendous amount of research and modeling to determine the best routes and locations in each market, so (that) we have a data-backed operational plan for each city we bring online.”

Feasible business model?

What the likely fares on a route such as Abu Dhabi-Dubai have not been set. “There are still more details to hash out before we can comfortably do so,” said Goldstein. “The projected operating economics support price per passenger mile costs similar to that of an ‘Uber Black Car’ with the pricing coming down to ‘Uber X’ equivalents as operations scale.” (Uber Black Car relates to a more luxury focused vehicle and service than is the norm.)

The Archer Aviation’s target is to replace 60- to 90-minute car commutes with estimated 10- to 20-minute electric air taxi flights that are ‘safe, sustainable, low noise, and cost-competitive with ground transportation’.

The Midnight aircraft are designed for back-to-back flights with ‘minimal charge time between flights’.

“With the support of its early investor and UAE’s sovereign wealth fund Mubadala, Archer’s partner operators Falcon Aviation and Air Chateau, and GAL-AMMROC have announced plans to provide maintenance, repair and overhaul support for the eVTOL aircraft,” said a statement.
