Best time to visit belize.

Belize’s subtropical climate sees high temperatures and humidity most of the year, but the fresh sea breezes generally make life more comfortable. The dry season is from December to May, and this is the best time to visit Belize if you’re looking for sunshine and warm temperatures.

The wet season is from June to November when rain is more frequent. Belize can get quite busy during the main holidays of Christmas and Easter so be prepared to share the beaches with other travelers during this time.

Culture and customs

Drawing on Caribbean, Central American, British, and Rastafarian traditions, Belize has a unique culture of its own. In general, Belizean society is quite laidback, casual, and friendly. The prevalence of beaches means that the dress code is relaxed, there is little pressure to get things done in a hurry, and leisure time is valued – hallmarks of coastal living.

With a large percentage of the population being Christian, Easter, and Christmas are important times for Belizeans. Drawing on many different cultural influences, Christmas is celebrated with a range of multi-racial rituals including old European traditions like decorating a Christmas tree and baking fruitcakes, as well as other traditions like Creole cooking and Garifuna dancing. Due to a high level of racial harmony and tolerance, the people of Belize are free to celebrate various religious and ethnic holidays in relative peace.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring cheap eats, or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Things to try in Belize

Belize’s seafood is undisputedly among the best in the world. A steady supply of lobster, crab, mussels, and Creole-style fish stew should keep seafood aficionados happy.

2. Hot sauces

Marie Sharp's famous habanero sauces, jams, and condiments are served almost everywhere - and with everything - in Belize. You can also visit this local success story’s factory in Dangriga if you’re nearby.

3. Fry Jacks & Johnny cakes

Served at breakfast instead of toast, these doughy delights often accompany bacon and eggs. While not good for the diet, they are delicious and you’ll soon get used to a side of fry jacks instead of bread.

4. Fruit shakes

Street carts and cafes make use of the wide variety of tropical fruits that grow in Belize. Ingredients range from the usual suspects (papaya, lime, bananas), to sweet additions (cinnamon), to the darn right weird (seaweed shake anyone?). Either way, choose what you want in your shake for a quick and healthy refreshment.

Geography and environment

Belize is a land of incredible biological diversity, with natural environments rich in plant and animal life. With such impressive jungles, preserves, and national parks, it’s no wonder more than 500 bird species choose to call this place home.

Boasting one of the most impressive reef systems in the world, Belize also has an abundance of marine life - including nimble reef sharks, colorful clownfish, gentle manatees, and giant whale sharks.

It's estimated that more than 60% of Belize is covered in forest, and with a recent increase in conservation consciousness, hopefully, Belize will retain much of this precious vegetation that is full of rare and protected flora and fauna.

Bordered by   Mexico   and   Guatemala   (and the Caribbean Sea), this small nation has the lowest population density in   Central America , and therefore people live with freedom and space. The major cities are quite slow-paced, low-density housing is common and much of the colonial heritage has been preserved in the buildings, churches, and streets.

History and government

Recent history.

Belize enjoyed relative economic prosperity up until the Great Depression of the 1930s, which caused wide-scale unemployment and hardship due to falling timber prices, and the subsequent collapse of the industry. Further to this, a damaging hurricane hit the colony in 1931 causing loss of life and infrastructure.

In 1964, Belize was granted the right to self-govern, with George Price becoming the country’s first Prime Minster. Nine years later, British Honduras was officially renamed Belize and in 1981, Belize was granted its independence. More recently, Belize elected its first black Prime Minister when Dean Barrow was sworn into office in 2008.

Early history

Once part of the great Mayan Empire, Belize was occupied for centuries before the Spanish arrived. The Spanish colonists were largely unsuccessful when first trying to colonize Belize as they were repelled by local inhabitants.

However, the British arrived in the 17th century and Belize soon became a part of the British Empire under the name of British Honduras (after many battles with Spanish settlers).

Prior to the abolition of the slave trade in 1838, many African slaves were sent to Belize to work in the timber industry, namely mahogany extraction. Conditions were tough and fraught with danger, but many slaves chose to stay in this line of work after their emancipation due to their inability to receive work elsewhere or own land. Belize’s current population reflects the rich African culture that the slaves brought to the area centuries ago.

Top 10 outdoor experiences in Belize

1. scuba diving.

Experienced divers will jump at the chance to explore Belize’s epic Great Blue Hole. Declared one of the top ten scuba diving spots in the world by scuba-legend Jacques Cousteau, this sinkhole has enough groupers, grey nurses, and reef sharks to astound diving veterans.

2. Sea Kayaking

Caye Caulker is one of the best places in the world to explore the sea in a kayak. Glide over the clear Caribbean waters and spot graceful marine life, stop and rest at sandy beaches, and experience the quiet and beauty of uninhabited islands.

3. Zip Lining

Make like Tarzan and speed through the Belizean jungle with the wind rushing through your hair on a zip line. This exhilarating ride gives you a different perspective of the jungle while you fly freely across the canopy way, from tree to tree, above the forest floor.

Whether you’re seeking fast mountain biking thrills or prefer slow cycling past sleepy villages, farmland, and cornfields, seeing this charismatic country by bike might just be one of the best ways to get to know the brilliance of Belize.

There’s no better way to travel the rivers of San Ignacio than in a tube. For a fun and relaxing ride, just hop in a tube and float through caves, past cascading waterfalls and over gentle rapids - taking in the surrounding jungle landscapes along the way.

6. Birdwatching

With more than 500 species of birds present in the tree-filled jungles of Belize, this is a paradise for ‘bird nerds’ and nature enthusiasts. Have fun spotting magnificent toucans, tiny hummingbirds, glorious eagles and curious woodpeckers.

7. Swimming

Floating in the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea is a surefire way to forget your troubles. Cheaper than therapy, daily ocean dips should be mandatory on all holidays. Luckily Belize has enough coastline to ensure that both locals and tourists can share the beaches without it getting too crowded. Phew!

Enjoy brief encounters with some of the world’s most elusive animals while hiking in Belize. Apart from world-famous birds, you can also find howler monkeys, jaguars, ocelots, and tree frogs lurking in Belize’s jungles, forests, and national reserves.

9. Snorkelling

Cool, clear water, golden sunshine, and reefs full of color and life combine to create the perfect conditions for some pretty sensational snorkeling.

Explore a mysterious, subterranean world while caving in some of Belize’s spectacular caves. Some feature underground rivers, sinkholes, and waterfalls, others have mystical Mayan artifacts held within – either way, Belize’s caves are not to be missed!

The nature-lovers playground of Belize is not well known for its shopping – the best action definitely happens on the beaches and in the jungles. Despite this, there are still enough markets and shops to keep most entertained – look hard and you’ll find some genuine finds among the standard (overpriced) touristy trinkets.

It's also a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Belize

1. Traditional drums

Hand-made by the Garifuna, drums are an excellent musical memento. Made from natural materials without the use of machinery, this is a great item to buy if you want to support and celebrate local culture.

2. Hot sauces and condiments

Locally made hot sauces, jams, and seasonings are a great way to take a taste of Belize home with you. Marie Sharp’s Fine Food Store is a one-stop shop for hot condiment lovers.

Vibrant art by local artists can be found in city galleries, shops, and some markets. From traditional ethnic art to more modern pieces, there’s a wide range to choose from.

One of the most popular items bought by visitors to Belize. Before buying, check with customs officials to see how much rum you can legally bring home with you.

Festivals and events in Belize

Lobster festivals.

Lobster lovers will be in heaven during lobster season! Several ‘Lobsterfests’ are held at the start of lobster season with the biggest being in San Pedro, Placencia, and Caye Caulker. Featuring music, dance, block parties, rum, and lobster cooked in hundreds of different ways, this is a chance to savor lobster omelets, tacos, kebabs, and cocktails.

Belize National Day

Starting in the first week of September, Belize National Day kicks off a three-week period of raucous festivities featuring parades, parties, fireworks, and feasts in celebration of Belize’s independence. All-night beach parties and dancing all round!

Easy-to-use travel guide for Belize

Explore the Belizean Jungle: Top 12 Tours & Experiences

February 26, 2022 By Lorenzo Gonzalez 1 Comment

Belizean rainforest

Although most people visit Belize for its islands, atolls and reefs, jungle adventure tours quickly become part of everyone’s list of must-have experiences in Belize.

Related: Top Eco Adventures in Belize & The Best Belize Rainforest Resorts

The reason why is simple. With over 60% of Belize under forest cover, the country is filled with national parks, nature reserves, and wildlife sanctuaries. As a result, visitors are presented with many perfect opportunities to get up close and personal with nature.

Top ways to experience the Belizean rainforest

Tapir sign at the Belize Zoo

Whether you choose to stay at jungle lodges or beach resorts , I suggest you seek out the 12 destinations listed below. There, you will be able to explore the Belizean rainforest through activities such as hiking, nature walks, wildlife spotting, horseback riding, canoeing, spelunking, river tubing, zip-lining, and exploring Maya temples.

1. Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve

Rio on Pools in Mountain Pine Ridge, Belize

Located 2 hours south of San Ignacio, Mountain Pine Ridge is dedicated to preserving Belize’s native pine forest. It is a must-visit nature reserve since it has several of western Belize’s best outdoor activities , including sites that have scenic waterfalls, rushing pools, and mysterious caves. Visit for a day of hiking, swimming, and wildlife spotting.

2. Actun Tunichil Muknal

Family at ATM Cave

Listed by National Geographic as one of the top Sacred Places of a Lifetime , Actun Tunichil Muknal is an impressive Maya ceremonial cave located within the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve. The tour involves a 2-hour hike traversing dense rainforest near San Ignacio (and rivers) before arriving at the cave containing rare bloodletting altars, sacrificial human remains, and over 1400 catalogued Maya artifacts.

3. Xunantunich Archaeological Reserve

El Castillo is the tallest temple at Xunantunich

Located 15 minutes west of San Ignacio, Xunantunich is one of my favourite Maya sites . After crossing a hand-cranked ferry, lush jungle surrounds the temples. It’s a great spot for relaxing and spotting some wildlife: for example, a troupe of 8-12 howler monkeys can be regularly seen there. The main temple, El Castillo, rises 130 ft (40 m) from the ground offering spectacular views of nearby villages and Guatemalan mountains.

4. The Belize Zoo

Spider Monkeys at the Belize Zoo

Located 1 hour west of Belize City, the Belize Zoo is an animal sanctuary situated within 29 acres of tropical savanna. The zoo is unique in that it serves as a wildlife refuge for orphaned or rescued native animals of Belize and it is primarily used as an educational facility to promote wildlife conservation. Up to 45 native species can be seen here.

5. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

Hiking views at the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and Jaguar Preserve

Located 15 miles (25 km) southwest of Hopkins, the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is known as the world’s only Jaguar Preserve and a top jungle destination in Belize for hiking . Although visitors rarely see jaguars, the wildlife sanctuary is great for waterfall chasing and it is home to numerous plants and animals, including margays, deer, ocelots, pumas, howler monkeys, tapirs, and many birds.

6. Nohoch Che’en Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve

Cave tubing in Belize

Located 30 minutes southeast of Belmopan City, Nohoch Cheʼen is an archaeological reserve consisting of an extensive network of limestone caves surrounded by the dense rainforest of Cayo. With the Caves Branch River flowing through some of the caves, it is a popular destination for cave-tubing , kayaking, and spelunking. A zip-line canopy tour can also be done on-site, which is often added as a 2-in-1 adventure.

7. Mayflower Bocawina National Park

Waterfall Repelling at Mayflower Bocawina National Park

Just 12 miles (20 km) northwest of Hopkins is Mayflower Bocawina, a national park with over 7000 acres of pristine lowland and highland rainforest. Along with having the longest canopy zipline in Belize , the park is a great location for exploring mountains, waterfalls, walking trails, swimming holes, and Maya archeological remains. Bocawina is also known as a great spot for birding.

8. Chaa Creek Nature Reserve

horseback riding in belize

Set along the banks of the Macal River, the Chaa Creek Nature Reserve is a 400-acre privately protected area near San Ignacio that offers extensive ecotourism facilities to resort guests and day visitors. On-site highlights include a butterfly farm, natural history museum, medicinal plants trail, Maya organic farm, guided birding, horseback riding, and rainforest ATV tours.

9. Lamanai Archaeological Reserve

Lamanai's mask temple

On the banks of the New River in Orange Walk is Lamanai. It is particularly popular for its Mask Temple, an ancient Mayan ruin that fashions a 13-foot stone mask of a Maya king. But another major highlight of visiting Lamanai is its scenic 26-mile boat safari ride there, where visitors can witness countless wildlife encounters including seeing crocodiles, river otters, monkeys, and various exotic birds.

10. St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park

northern emerald toucanet in Belize

Located 12 miles (20 km) south of Belmopan City, along the Hummingbird Highway, St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park hosts 575 acres of jungle waiting to be explored. Often referred to as the inland Belize Blue Hole, the park is primarily known for its sapphire-coloured cenote, however, less explored are its Maya caves and well-maintained hiking trails that make jungle exploration very accessible.

11. Caracol Archaeological Reserve

2012 Winter Solstice in Belize

A little further south of Mountain Pine Ridge lies Caracol. Once rivalling Guatemala’s Tikal, it is the largest archaeological reserve in Belize. The biggest temple at Caracol is “Caana” or “Sky Palace”, a massive pyramid that rises over 140 feet above the jungle floor and is the tallest manmade structure in Belize. Lush rainforest surrounds the temples, allowing for wildlife adventures such as advanced birding .

12. Gallon Jug Estate

Safari-drive Wildlife Spotting Night Tour at Chan Chich, Gallon Jug

A bit north of Cayo in Orange Walk sits the Galon Jug Estate, a secluded 30,000-acre private nature reserve that is primarily only accessed by Chan Chich Lodge guests. Surrounded by thousands of acres of conservation lands, the reserve allows for numerous wildlife-viewing opportunities. The elusive jaguar, for example, is spotted about once a week there.

Show Full Itinerary

Welcome to Belize! Your adventure begins in Belize City – located where the Belize River meets the Caribbean Sea, this bustling former capital is full of history and culture. A welcome meeting will take place at 6 pm tonight where you'll meet your tour leader and fellow travellers. If you arrive with time to spare, Belize City has plenty to discover. On the north side is the coastal and maritime museum, housed in the beautifully restored former fire station. Also in the north is the Image Factory, displaying contemporary Belizean artists, and the National Handicraft Centre. The oldest Anglican church in Central America, St John Cathedral, was built in 1812 with bricks brought as ballast in European sailing ships. Opposite is Government House, a preserved colonial mansion that’s well worth a look from the outside.

Take a private vehicle to Carmelita, then hop aboard a boat towards the Lamanai Archaeological site. The boat ride is an adventure in itself and your leader will help you spot the colourful birds that live along the river. Arrive at the archaeological site and take some time explore the remains of an ancient Mayan civilisation and its unearthed temples. After your exploration head back up the river by boat, returning to Carmelita and travelling on to Crooked Tree. This inland wildlife sanctuary is full of lagoons, marshlands and creeks, making it one of the best destinations for wildlife spotting. Enjoy your free afternoon exploring the sanctuary by foot or by boat, hoping to spot Jabiru stalks, yellow-headed parrots, Mexican black howler monkeys and Central American river turtles (locally known as the Hicatee). The Crooked Tree village also has some notable and historical sights, having been established around 1750 during the logwood period and thought to be the oldest non-indigenous settlement in Belize. In the evening, settle into your lodge with an included group dinner.

This morning, drive to the San Ignacio area, stopping along the way at the San Antonio Women’s Co-op, an organisation formed by local Mayan women as a way to share skills and traditional knowledge while earning an income. Join the local women for a cooking demonstration designed to preserve their culinary heritage, then sit down together for lunch. Afterwards, head to Cahal Pech Ruins, a Mayan site in the San Ignacio area. This archaeological site was a royal palace of a ruling Mayan family, consisting of 7 plazas and over 30 structures including temples, buildings and ball courts. The rest of the afternoon is yours to spend as you please.

Today is yours to take on any of the many optional activities available in San Ignacio. Perhaps take a day trip to Xunantunich, an impressive Mayan ceremonial centre located with panoramic views over the countryside. The east side of one of the temples has a unique moulded wall surface and the central plaza has three carved stelae (stone slabs). Getting to the site is half the fun as you'll need to take a hand-cranked ferry to cross the river. Otherwise, head to the caves of Actun Tunichil Muknal, a living museum of Maya relics. Wade through the water until you reach the ceremonial site where you’ll find ceramic pots and crystallised skeletons preserved by the natural processes of the cave for over 1400 years. If Maya ruins aren’t your thing, consider a trip to the Mountain Pine Ridge area to visit waterfalls and warm swimming holes, check out the butterfly garden, or canoe down the Barton Creek cave reserve.

Travel by local bus to Belize City where you’ll board a water taxi to the island of Caye Caulker. While there a number of islands off the coast of the mainland, Caye Caulker is certainly the most famous (and arguably the most beautiful!). If you fancy, it’s possible to arrange day trips to the other islands, or to some spectacular reefs for snorkelling – just chat to your leader about your options. Each island has its own character, but all of them have the unmistakable Caribbean pace and charm. Once you’ve arrived on Caye Caulker, join your leader on an orientation walk to get to know this tiny and laidback island. You’ll notice there are no cars here, which makes it a real pleasure to explore. This evening, why not get your hands on some freshly caught seafood, often served up in causal and colourful restaurants to a soundtrack of reggae music.

If your idea of paradise is white sand, blue waters and palm trees then you’re going to dig Caye Caulker with the next couple of days to explore, relax and get active. Chill out on the beach with a book, or head out to Hol Chan Marine Reserve, home to the magnificent Blue Hole and the world's second-longest barrier reef. Here you might like to take the chance to snorkel in the crystal-clear waters among colourful corals and see tropical fish, sharks, and the occasional manta ray.

Your time in Caye Caulker is all about taking it easy, so do as much (or as little) as you want with another day here. After a day of swimming and lazing on the beach, you’re sure to get hungry. If you're interested in sampling local cuisine, Belize is famous for its barbequed food, with some of the best meals cooked on the roadside. Caye Caulker is famous for its lobster – not the cheapest meal you'll ever buy, but so (so) good. Always make sure that you respect the season: the lobsters can only be caught between June and February. If you’re out of season, how about some grilled shrimp and a lovely rum and coke made with the local firewater?

There are no activities planned for the final day and you are able to depart the accommodation at any time following check out. If you would like to spend more time in Caye Caulker, we’ll be happy to organise additional accommodation (subject to availability).
