The 10 best Napa Valley wine tours to sip and see Wine Country

There are many ways to drink wine in Napa. Try one of these Napa Valley wine tours via hot air balloon, vintage train or stylish tuk-tuk.

One of the easiest ways to experience Napa Valley is on a fun tour. If you're planning to drive through Wine Country, consider booking an informative tour and tasting at one of the best wineries in Napa . If you'd rather leave the car behind,  you can board a train, zip around on a Segway, peddle through the vineyards on a bicycle or take in the view of the valley from a hot air balloon. A standard Napa Valley wine tour will cover the history of the winery and explain how wine is made, but may also include venturing into the cellars, vineyards, and even a museum or art gallery before ending with a wine tasting. Afterwards, sit down at one of the best restaurants in Napa before you head home.

The tour departs from the Oxbow Public Market in downtown Napa at 10 a.m. daily, with pickups at select Napa Valley hotels starting earlier. Tickets include transportation, guide gratuity and a picnic lunch, but exclude winery tasting fees, which range from $30 to $40 per person at each winery. Tours typically depart from a central location in Napa (for those driving into Napa), but pickups from nearby hotels are also available. Group sizes range from eight to 12 participants.

Tickets include a picnic lunch at one of the stops as well as bottled water aboard the bus. Tasting fees at the wineries are not included. Platypus also offers tours of Sonoma Valley as well as private tours.

Tickets include use of an e-bike and helmet as well as lunch from Bouchon Bakery, a local favorite. They do not cover winery tasting fees, though some of these fees may be waived with a minimum wine purchase. The tour covers a total of 12 to 17 miles, with an average 3 to 6 miles between stops. If that seems overwhelming, you can opt for a half-day outing with a stop at one winery.

Frequently Asked Questions

August through October, which coincides with the harvesting season, is the best time to visit Napa Valley . March through May is also a nice, often less-crowded time to visit.

The best Napa wine tours start at around $120 per person; fees will increase depending on tour inclusions (such as meals, gratuities and tastings). Prices may also fluctuate based on tour group size as well as the time of year and day of week.

Yes, it is recommended that you tip both your tour guide and your tasting host at each vineyard. Some tours include gratuities in rates, which may be something you want to look for when booking your tour.

None of the wineries have a dress code, so opt for casual (but not too casual) and comfortable. Think flowy sundresses, wide leg pants, khaki shorts or pants, dark jeans and nice tops (blouses, collared shirts) with sandals or sneakers. You'll also want to bring a light jacket as it can get chilly on some of the vineyards, even in the summer.

Why Trust U.S. News Travel

Amanda Norcross has previously traveled to Napa Valley, visiting select wineries on her own and also with a tour. She always recommends a tour, not just for a designated driver with a local's perspective, but also because you get to meet and imbibe with other fun and interesting tourgoers along the way. She used her personal experience and insights from other travelers to determine the best wine tours in Napa Valley. Cheers!

The ultimate bordeaux wine experience Abdi ,the prince of wine tour guides, picked up 7 keen customers for a full day tour of St Emilion and Medoc wine chateaux, complete with a superlative lunch at the chateau Canadale and some free time in the St Emilion village. It was a fantastic day, we made new friends, enjoyed marvellous food and wine and learnt a great deal from our very knowledgeable Abdi who clearly loves his job and his country. Highly recommended for would be wine enthusiasts.

A fantastic tour with Abdi This was exactly the tour I was looking for, we saw so many fabulous chateaux along the way and stopped at the scheduled three. I learnt so much from both the tours and Abdi – it was excellent! We were particularly lucky as the harvest had just started so we got to see lots of activity! The only downside was lunch, which for me was salad and mashed potatoes – as the vege main option instead of chicken… despite calling ahead to confirm that vegetarian was ok (when in fact it wasn’t).

Abdi’s enthusiasm was infectious We spent a very pleasant day touring St Emilion and Medoc, with Abdi telling us so much about the various vineyards and the wine industry and how to buy an excellent wine without taking out a second mortgage. Abdi speaks excellent English, obviously loves wine and was keen for us to learn.

Our Previous Guests’ Experiences

Tripadvisor reviews.

We appreciated getting an overview of what to look for and expect on the following days. Paul was a great tour guide and really made the trip even more enjoyable.

The best part was driving around Napa in the open-air trolley and hearing our guide Richard give us facts about the land. It was interesting and very scenic. I can’t imagine doing a wine tour on a bus when you can do this instead!

Great way to see multiple wineries in one day without having to plan meals and all the visits ourselves. Wineries were great, food and wine were amazing, the trolley was a fun way to travel.

Definitely recommend it if you are visiting for the first time. It’s a great way to visit a few wineries worry-free!

This was my very favorite experience in Napa! The trolley was such a fun way to see more of Napa Valley and truly experience different wineries (and not worry about driving!! :-))

Join-in Wine Tour Paired with a Spectacular Early Morning Napa Valley Balloon Flight

We’ve teamed up with our friends at Balloons Above the Valley to offer a one-of-a-kind Balloon & Join-in Wine Tour package.

Start your special day with a spectacular early morning balloon ride high above the magnificent Napa Valley. Your highly experienced pilot will identify key landmarks and engage you with stories about this beautiful and historic area.

This balloon adventure is provided by Balloons Above the Valley.

Next, enjoy our Platypus  Join-In Wine Tour  of the Napa Valley – a fun, social tour of smaller, back roads wineries. The tour is packed with lots of information, entertainment and commentary from your friendly driver/tour guide. Also includes:

  • A very tasty picnic lunch, served at a winery.
  • More incredible views, great wine, and lively companionship than you ever thought possible in a single day!

Please keep these points in mind: The balloons fly best in cool, calm, stable air which in Napa is usually just after sunrise. Balloon flights are weather-dependent. Napa Valley weather is usually very good, but there are days every year on which the balloon operator must re-route or sometimes even cancel the flights. Passengers are encouraged to reschedule, so we recommend you plan your flight for the beginning of your trip, leaving your options open.

While the balloon portion of the tour may be canceled, the wine tour part of the package will go on, rain or shine.

*As we are two separate companies, Balloons Above the Valley will charge for the balloon ride portion of the day and Platypus Tours will charge separately for the join-in wine tour. Balloons Above the Valley flights start at $269 per person & Platypus Tours charges $119 per person ($129 per person on Fridays, $139 per person on Saturdays) for the join-in tour.

Winery tasting fees are not included in the package price. Tasting fees tend to be about $20-$25 per person at each winery. We’ll visit three wineries on the wine tour. The winery selection varies each day.

To check availability, or to reserve this experience, please call: (707) 253-2723.

Please note: This tour is not available on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, or New Year’s Day.

This was such a great experience!

“This was such a great experience! I booked Platypus for our Bachelorette weekend on the recommendation of one of our bridesmaids and we couldn’t be happier. A Grape Escape Balloon Adventure - Temecula, California

Why choose a grape escape for your temecula hot air balloon ride.

A Grape Escape provides the best hot air balloon rides Temecula has to offer. With over 30 years of experience in hot air ballooning, our pilots and crew are experts in making your ride magical from start to finish.

Imagine starting your day with a balloon flight over the Temecula Valley, peacefully floating above Temecula wine country and its beautiful vineyards, citrus groves and wineries. Off in the distance you can see the beauty of Lake Skinner and our California mountains. Temecula is perfectly positioned to see the most of Southern California from the air. On a clear day you can even see the ocean in the distance from your air balloon flight.

A Grape Escape Balloon Adventure can be booked online or over the phone with our friendly and professional staff. Each flight lasts a full hour or more and is followed with a champagne toast (or sparkling cider if you prefer). If you are looking to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or just to have a magical adventure balloon experience, you've come to the right place.

The health and safety of our passengers is our highest priority. We take pride in our perfect safety record and our aircraft and vehicles are maintained according to all federal and local guidelines. We don't work with daily deal or sale sites for our tours, as our prices are as low as possible while maintaining and exceeding all safety and insurance protocols.  All our balloon equipment is FAA Certified and meticulously inspected by an FAA approved repair station. In addition to ongoing balloon maintenance, our balloons are inspected daily as part of our daily flight operations.

Temecula is one of just a few spots in California that is perfect for hot air ballooning year-round. On a typical day, locals can look to the sky in the early morning to see 10 to 20 balloons overhead. Whether you are visiting from outside California or if you call Temecula home balloon rides are an incredible bucket list adventure any month of the year.

Temecula isn't just known for its hot air balloon rides. With over 60 wineries in the area of Rancho California Road, you are sure to find a relaxing way to spend your day.

Your Temecula balloon experience begins and ends at Bolero Winery, so why not stay a while, and do a wine tasting? Each of our adventure balloon rides include a 20% off discount to purchase our private label "La Scappatela" champagne in the tasting room.

Want to see what else Temecula has to offer? Why not take a wine tour or visit our historic Old Town filled with restaurants, shopping, and nightlife? You will find there is a lot to enjoy in Temecula!

Temecula is just one hour from San Diego and about an hour and a half from Los Angeles. Temecula air balloons only fly in the early mornings. Our sunrise flights meet daily between 5:30 and 6:30 AM, so if you would prefer not to get up so early, consider staying in one of our winery hotels or a private vacation rental. Our friendly reservation specialists are happy to offer suggestions as to where to stay based on your preferences. Please give us a call between 9 AM and 5 PM Monday through Saturday for personal assistance.

Ready to book your Temecula hot air balloon ride? We are so excited to help you check this amazing experience off your bucket list. It will be a morning you will never forget.

No need to have a designated driver as the cable car has its own driver to pick you up and drop you off at vineyards along the route.

Throughout the tour, you will learn about how natural features such as location, climate, and volcanic soils affect the taste of the wines in your glass. You’ll also find out about how the wineries are constantly evolving and becoming more innovative. We’ll have three tastings from a selection of Sonoma’s best wineries, tasting rooms, cellars, and urban wineries. Try different varietals such as cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, pinot noir, and much more. Each tasting is with a winery educator who will explain the varietals we taste and the background of the winery.

We’ll also get a chance to explore Sonoma throughout the day on your wine trolley ride. We’ll pass historic landmarks, including the Sonoma and Swiss Hotels; General Vallejo’s soldier barracks, home, and state park; Mission San Francisco Solano (Sonoma Mission); the Bear Flag Monument; and the quaint town of Glen Ellen (where Jack London spent his final years).

We’ll pause for lunch at one of the stops in the valley. Weather permitting, lunch is usually served among vineyard views, courtyards, or wine cellars.

Great intro tour for Sonoma! You get history and get to see the beautiful places in Sonoma. Everyone is quiet at the beginning of the tour. By the end, everyone is best of friends. Highly recommend to anyone who has not been to Sonoma.

No rushing through to make the day. Paul encouraged people to get to know each other and as a solo traveler, this was appreciated. Open-air trolley nice during these mask times. Would visit again.

Kimberley D

We had an amazing time on the trolley! Paul the tour guide took us to some great wineries and was very helpful and knowledgeable! My friend and I came on a girls trip and we recommend this to anyone wanting to tour wine country!

Great activity for a girls trip. We weren’t sure what to do and this ended up being the perfect activity. Paul was a fantastic guide and the wineries were very nice. Would do it definitely do it again.

As first-time wine country visitors with varying degrees of knowledge about wine, The Sonoma Wine Trolley was the ideal way to experience Sonoma wineries. I’d definitely recommend the trolley for those looking for a low-stress way to wine taste!

This was an excellent experience. I highly recommend CA Dreaming for your hot air balloon ride. Our pilot was highly knowledgeable about the terrain, wildlife in the area, ballooning, and explained everything in an easy to understand fashion. He took us up to approximately 2,000 feet and brought us close to the ground so we could see the jackrabbits scurrying around. Due to Covid, everyone wore masks, including the ground crew, and upon landing we were served mimosas, OJ and sparkling cider in the field next to our landing spot, which was perfectly delightful. Please check these guys out if you're considering a hot air balloon ride. You won't be disappointed.

What a beautiful way to spend the morning of my birthday! We stayed at The South Coast Winery Resort & Spa. The folks from California Dreamin’ provided round trip transportation and a beautiful balloon ride. The breakfast afterwards was delicious (bread, fresh fruit, Brie cheese, mimosas, tea, coffee, hot cocoa). And a special touch at the very end for my birthday — they sang happy birthday and passed out slices of delicious chocolate cake. This business is a family affair and the customer service was stellar. When you’re in Temecula, THIS is the place to visit.

  • DebbJ 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to get oriented to Moscow We started our Moscow experience with the hop on hop off. It was a great way to get orientated to the city. The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
  • niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. • Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018
