al-habala-hanging-village

Saudi Arabia has several ancient and historical villages, effectively preserving the culture of the Arabian Peninsula. One such village in Saudi Arabia is Al Habala. It is a small mountain village situated in the Asir Region of the Kingdom. Popularly known as the hanging village, Al Habala is a fascinating village surrounded by majestic and towering mountains. Besides the beauty of the destination, Al Habala has a rich history dating back to 370 years. The village offers numerous tourist activities such as visiting lush green parks, trekking the mountain, and watching valley views from cable cars.

How to reach Al Habala Village

Situated in the rolling Al Habala Valley, the old village of Al Habala is just an hour’s drive from the city of Abha. The village is located beneath a cliff that slopes about 300 meters from the edge of the majestic Sarwat Mountains. Getting to the village is not that difficult. It is situated at a distance of just 61.6 km from Abha, and one can easily drive from Abha to the village. However, tourists have to take a ride in the cable car to reach the village once in the area.

Best time to visit Al Habala

al-habala-village

The best time to visit the village is during the summer season in Saudi Arabia , which falls from May to October. This is because the village is accessible solely through a cable car, which only runs during the summers. Most of the tourist attractions of the village can be explored in a day.

History of Al Habala

Built more than 370 years ago, the quaint village of Al Habala was originally inhabited by the Khatani tribe. The tribal community was popularly called ‘flower men’ due to their custom of wearing flowers in their hair and garlands around their necks. The tribe chose Habala to settle down because of its inaccessibility. The tribe was fleeing the Turks during the Ottoman Empire and needed shelter from the invading party. The only way to access the village was by rope ladders, helping the inhabitants in deterring invaders.

Until the 1980s, the locals lived self-sufficiently with terraced gardens and small livestock. In the 1990s, there was a push to promote tourism in the area. Consequently, the locals relocated to a modern village in the valley below. In today’s time, a few of the original inhabitants are allowed back up during the summers to perform their traditional dances for tourists.

Top choice in Saudi Arabia

The mysterious and unique 'hanging village' of Al Habala is one of the genuine wonders of Saudi Arabia. This series of sandstone houses hewn from local rock perches on a ledge 400m down a sheer cliff and was accessible only by habal (rope ladders). The Khatani tribe, who built it more than 370 years ago, chose this most inaccessible of spots to avoid the Ottomans. They lived here self-sufficiently on small livestock and terraced gardens up until the 1980s.

Access to the village is by a cable car that only runs during the summer season (May to October). The rest of the year, head for the nearby viewpoint to admire this amazing human feat from afar.

Saudi novelist sultan ayaz’s ‘crossing thoughts’ to be adapted into manga.

al habala tourist park

  • Ayaz’s novel, written in English, tells the story of humans defending their lands against the oppression of demons
  • In the book, humans fight off demons by using elemental magic and swordplay

RIYADH: A fantasy novel by a Saudi author has been chosen for adaption into a manga, Japan’s famous style of graphic novel. Sultan Ayaz finished writing the story of “Crossing Thoughts” in 2014, and says the adaptation deal with Manga Arabia is the result of a decade-long dream. Manga are comics or graphic novels originating from Japan, conforming to a style developed in the late 19th century, though the form has antecedents in earlier Japanese art. Ayaz’s novel, written in English, tells the story of humans defending their lands against the oppression of demons. It is about the eternal conflict between humans and demons, and a man who stands in between. In the book, humans fight off demons by using elemental magic and swordplay. The narrative begins with Drake, a little boy, who, along with his family, lives in tranquility in a tiny town. But the town is destroyed by a demonic attack, which Drake miraculously survives. Three characters emerge — Aria, Ray and Amber — and study the nature of elements at the Grand College of Elements in the Kingdom of Iora. They learn how to use the elements as weapons against their demonic foes. “Crossing Thoughts” is full of drama, action and a hint of terror. Ayaz told Arab News: “I was always into writing in English since high school, and I was influenced by video games and anime, which strongly developed my imagination. Along with daydreaming and creating scenarios in my head, I always wanted to have my own story. So, I started to write short stories from time to time to fulfill this desire.” The Saudi author said he was “ecstatic” to sign a deal with Manga Arabia and adapt his novel. “‘Crossing Thoughts’ is the result of hard work and sincere dedication, and I am very proud of it. Since I finished writing the novel back in 2014, I always wanted to have it adapted into a manga or an anime, because I believe it is suitable for such adaptation,” he said. “When I signed the contract with Manga Arabia, I felt overwhelming happiness, because, for 10 years, this is exactly what I was aiming for. I am very proud of this achievement and honored to be chosen among other talented Saudi authors to be part of this project.” In 2020, Ayaz became one of the first Saudi novelists to have a fiction work published internationally when a British publishing house, Olympia Publishers, acquired the rights to publish “Crossing Thoughts.” The book was first released locally in 2017 and sold in Virgin Megastores. “During this journey, I faced many obstacles and hardships that almost forced me to drop my novel and just focus on balancing my life. My father passed away. I had to drop college for a couple of years, and worked in several minimum wage jobs just to contribute to covering the living expenses of my family. But, eventually, I was inspired by my mother’s strength and decided to push myself to the limits and overcome all that, and I succeeded,” Ayaz said. The writer used two monthly salaries just to cover the printing and publishing expenses of his work. And though he faced some criticism because the novel was authored in English, “Crossing Thoughts” sold well in Saudi Arabia, attracting the attention of Olympia Publishers. “I am rather pleased with ‘Crossing Thoughts.’ It is the first English-language fantasy book by a Saudi author to be published, and it helped me overcome my anxiety of failing by landing me live TV appearances and magazine features. It is the sole outcome of real commitment and persistent work,” Ayaz said. His advice for young writers is to never aim for fame, set your goals straight and persuade audiences with continuous effort. Always remember that “the journey’s experience is priceless,” he said. Last month, Manga Arabia chose five Saudi authors to have their novels turned into comic stories. “Drawing Nothingness” by Ashraf Al-Faqih was already featured in the Manga Arabia Youth magazine. “The Voyagers” by Kendah Jambi, Ayaz’s “Crossing Thoughts,” “The Awsaj” by Al-Jawhara Al-Rimal and Ghada Al-Marzouqi’s “I Live My Memories Upside Down” will also be published in Manga Arabia magazine’s print and digital editions. The project is part of joint efforts between the Saudi Literature, Publishing and Translation Commission and Manga Arabia to support businesses in the publishing sector. The manga initiative has been hailed as a “cultural leap” in the presentation of Saudi literature worldwide, and an indicator of progress in the Kingdom’s burgeoning creative industries.

The festivities will feature a series of events, including captivating performances of the Saudi Ardah, the traditional celebratory dance, and the lively Samri folklore dance, the SPA reported.

In addition to activating the Nuzul experience, it transports visitors back in time to immerse them in the daily life of At-Turaif during the First Saudi State.

The DGDA decorated five mosques across the city to elevate the festive spirit for the Eid Al-Fitr celebrations. These mosques hosted special breakfast tables on the first day of Eid, creating a warm and welcoming environment for everyone.

The Huwamah event also featured several buses touring Diriyah’s neighborhoods in the evening, allowing families and visitors to partake in the Eid activities.

Abha, the Mist Lady

Updated: Dec 17, 2021

A women's beauty isn't seen; it is discovered."

al habala tourist park

November 2020: Abha is an important and exciting tourist city in Saudi Arabia, which just happens to be blessed with a mild climate all year round. It is almost nine hours by car or one hour and thirty minutes from Riyadh with Saudi Airways or Flynas.

Situated 2,270 meters above sea level, in the fertile Asir Mountains, Abha is referred to as the Bride of the Mountain, the Mist Lady, or Abha Al-Bahiyeh (the fascinating Abha) due to its striking natural beauty. The city and its winding streets are nestled across pitched hills, which embrace the city on all sides.

Some researchers believe that the city of Abha was called (Abqa) in days gone by and was the site from which Bilquis, Queen of Sheba , used to send gifts to King Solomon. I can see why she felt so inspired.

The Queen of Sheba is believed to be from Sheba, or Sabaʾ, an ancient Kingdom in the southwest of Arabia (modern-day Yemen). Sheba controlled commerce around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, as well as parts of Abyssinia (Ethiopia). This intrepid Queen appears to have traveled quite extensively around the Gulf States and North Africa because her name pops up in many of the places I have visited across the region.

Abha is the capital city of Aseer Province which is equal distance to either the Red Sea or the Yemeni border in southwest of Saudi Arabia. I mention the border because it is worth noting that occasionally unwanted projectiles do come from the direction of the Yemeni border . Still, the Saudi Authorities are ever vigilant and do a great job of keeping the community safe. I certainly saw nothing more than blue sky and fluffy clouds that hugged the mountaintops on my visit .

The population of Abha and its surrounding villages is about 400,000, most of whom live within one hour from the city. While the villagers engage in agriculture and farming activities, a growing number of young professionals are opting to remain at home and work in tourism or the arts.

The moderate climate consists of two wet periods during the year and contributes to the diversity of agricultural crops grown in the area. You will see plenty of poly-tunnels, which house everything from tomatoes, strawberries, avocados, pomegranates to grapes.

al habala tourist park

Abha residents like to spend weekends and other holidays, outside their city, in the quiet scenic villages and temperate rural areas of Al Souda, Sarawat Mountains, or the Tanumah plains. Soon I got to see why.

Abu Hani, our driver, prepared a busy schedule. The first stop was the Al Qatt Art Museum, which is just on the outskirts of Abha. This well-presented museum was an amazing discovery and set the tone for the rest of our trip. Created and promoted by husband and wife team Fatemah Faya and Ali Moghawi.

Fatemah is a renowned local artist, and Ali is a published author. Both of them work tirelessly to save and promote local designs, colors, and of course, the story and history of the artistic and creative talents of the people of Asir.

The artworks of Al-Qatt and Al-Asiri, are playful and very colorful . They tell a story of female empowerment where the women of the family feature heavily. The original paints used were locally sourced from plants and earth. Today these female-inspired interior wall decorations, (which decorate the majlis of traditional homes), are an acknowledged and protected ancient and local art form.

al habala tourist park

Furthermore, this art form was added to the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017. If you want to buy some of Fatemah's amazing work, you can do so from Turquoise Mountain , which has a Riyadh-based office. It is an international foundation created by HRH Prince of Wales to revive historical and traditional crafts.

After a pleasant two-hour visit, we all piled back into our people mover to drive over an hour to Al Habala. Al Habala Tourist Park consists of a small mountain village, a cable car, and some impressive and striking valleys.

This area was inhabited by a tribal community known as the "flower men" because of their custom of wearing garlands of dried herbs and flowers in their hair. This tradition was born out of medicinal requirements as it is said that some of the herbs and flowers provide relief from headaches and other ailments.

In the past, Al Habala Village, which is suspended 300 hundred meters above the valley floor, was only accessible by rope ladder s. In fact, the name Habala comes from the Arabic word for rope . The Flower Men were supposedly fleeing from the invading Turks during the time of the Ottoman Empire . Everything they needed to save from the invaders was hauled up the cliff face via the rope ladders, people, and animals!

In the 1990s, during a push to promote tourism in the region, the cable car was built to provide access to the traditional village and give tourists an immersive experience of the majestic mountain views. Sadly, on our visit, the cable car was closed, covid related , but nonetheless, we were more than impressed with the majestic views of the valley and the surrounding countryside .

The next day we set off for Bin Adwan Heritage Village , which is over an hour north of Abha. The drive north was along a good road . From the passenger seat, I was provided with a cine-reel of ever-changing views of fertile terraced mountain slopes, examples of traditional builds, roadside baboons colonies, shrub-covered hillsides, which are dotted with some rather large new builds out in the middle of nowhere. In the car, we debated what the views reminded us most of, and we could not decide if it was Granada, Spain, or Beirut in Lebanon. It was hard to come to a conclusive answer, but one thing was for sure, we did not think for a minute we were in Saudi!

Bin Adwan Heritage Village is a labor of love developed over 25 years. It is the sort of project that will never reach an end date! This is because the owner, Mohammad Alahmari, is such an avid collector of antiques. The museum tells the story of the local tribe’s people, from working to put food on the table to how they defended their land. There is also antique jewelry, traditional costumes, old-fashioned guns, early colonial telephones, and radios. The traditional part of the village has several beautiful mejlises , some outhouses for food preparation, a café, and a kids' entertainment area.

There is a traditional guesthouse, which has rooms built in a traditional early style, or you can take over the modern 17-room guesthouse, which is adjacent. Both are beautiful and perfect if you want to get away from it all and spend some time in nature walking the surrounding hillside. Mohammed is also a keen gardener, and he will be delighted to show you his strawberry patch, blackberries, lemons, and many other herbs that are nurtured into life by the cool misty mountain air.

Next, we drove back across Al Souda Mountain to the most famous village in Saudi, Rijal Almaa Village. The drive down Al Souda Mountain is thrilling. It’s a steep one-lane road that twists and turns the whole way down. Al Souda is over 3000 m above sea level at its highest , so a certain amount of nerve and a good local driver are recommended. Alsouda mountains and tourist village is located about 60 kilometers from the city of Abha . The mountains are green and covered in parts with dense juniper trees. If you plan to stay in the area, there are many walking trails for hikers to take that lead to the cloud-tipping summit of Jabal Soodah peak.

al habala tourist park

Rijal Almaa Village used to be a natural passage and link between Yemen , Makkah , Madinah , and the Levant . Thus, it was a regional and bustling center for trade. Products were carried in by camels from the seaports and sold to the local community. The province was home to ten tribes, which consisted of a number of clans, the museum preserves and depicted their architecture, educational systems, customs, and artistic practices.

al habala tourist park

Rijal Almaa contains around 60 multiple-story buildings made of traditional stone, clay, and wood. The village is of historical significance, and many of the old fortresses are renovated so that visiting tourists can see how the locals once lived. My prediction for Rijal Almaa Village is that it will become the Gstaad of Saudi, such is its beauty and potential.

Honeybee Farm . Beekeeping or apiculture is at least 9000 years old, and wild honey hunting even more ancient. In ancient times, Honey was used as an antibacterial, for embalming, and as an offering. It is very important in the everyday life of Arab communities.

The history of beekeeping in the Arabian Peninsula dates back to circa 2000 BC. An early earthen painting found in Iraq depicts honey as a remedy for disease, a fact many of us can say we agree with. Honey is one of the more prominent early products of Arabia and was enormously abundant.

Clusters of old apiaries can be found across the southwest of Saudi. According to the apiary owners, these apiaries were built in the mountains around 500 years ago as Cylinder log hives which were stuck high up on the rock face to protect the hives from possible attacks by rival tribes.

Records show that some families have passed on the same apiaries over many generations in order to maintain the tradition and importance of beekeeping within a family line. The honey from such apiaries is prized and much more expensive than ordinary shop-bought honey. Approximately 3500 tons of honey per year is produced in Saudi. So when you come to Saudi, do try some of the local honey.

The Tuesday souk , located in Abha city, provides a glimpse into a re-surging artisan culture. Not only is it where the visitors practice their bargaining skills, an obligatory art form , it is also a souk largely run by talented and entrepreneurial local women.

The ladies are usually clad in black abayas, many in traditional batoolas which are gold-colored masks over their eyes and nose. The matriarch usually sits in the center of the shop directing her team to assist the browsing tourists to invest in some colorful and handmade gifts and souvenirs. I can assure you that you won't leave empty-handed .

If you have any time left on your visit, there is still much more to see in Abha city. It has many monuments that enhance its value as a tourist destination. H istorical sites include the Museum of Dar-Almaa for culture and heritage, Al-Muftaha Art Village, Al-Malha Palace, and Shada Palace, in addition to many others such as the popular market of Rabou Al-Yazeed market, where visitors can also buy antiques, souvenirs, and special folk costumes.

al habala tourist park

Hilltop fortresses are characteristic features of the city ; for example, Shadda Palace, the main ruling palace built in 1820, takes pride of place in Abha and is open as a museum for tourists to visit.

If you want to venture out for dinner, you can check out the newly built and popular High City, Green Restaurant, or the N Lounge, or you can just try some of the local Arabic restaurants, which were most enjoyable and very affordable.

On a distant hill lies the Airplane restaurant, which is a 747 Jumbo that came by road all the way from Madinah and is patiently waiting to be turned into a gastro dining experience. I hope it gets an artistic makeover to blend in with the local vibe and add even more color to Abha.

Exploring the Asir Mountains Around Abha

Ancient villages hidden in the mountains seems like something out of a story book, doesn’t it? However, these were actually part of the history of this region of Saudi Arabia & Yemen. After spending time in Jeddah & Taif, we continued further south into the Asir Mountains to the mountain town of Abha. The ancient village of Thee Ain was in between Taif & Abha, so we spent one night between to explore this area before continuing an additional 4.5 hours to Abha. In this region, many of the historical and cultural relics come have a strong influence from Yemen due to its close proximity.

Abha is a big tourist destination for many Saudis, due to it being in the mountains (at an elevation of 2,200 meters), it provides cooler temperatures from the sweltering summer heat in the rest of the Kingdom. In the height of the summer, daytime highs average around 30 C with an average low of around 16 C. In the winter, average highs are around 19-20 C and a low of around 6-8 C at night. We had actually been warned by several Saudis that it was cold and many things were closed during the off-season. However, as Canadians the cooler weather didn’t bother us, so we headed down to explore the area and actually enjoyed the break from the heat. These are the top things we explored in the Asir Mountains near Abha.

Thee Ain Ancient Village

Tucked away in the Asir Mountains, this ancient village goes by a variety of names including Thee Ain, Dhi Ayn or Zee Ain Village. This village dates back to the 8th Century when there was a threat of invasion by the Ottoman Empire. The village is near Al-Mekhwa city in the Al-Baha province. (This ancient village is still about 4.5 hours away from Abha, but if you are driving from Jeddah, it's worth stopping & checking out!)

Two children looking at the ancient village of Thee Ain in Saudi Arabia.

The village is characterized by multi-story houses that sit on top of a hill above agricultural land that produces banana, basil, lemon and palm trees -- even today. Many of the houses are 3 stories and several of them you can enter and explore, making it a unique way to explore the Old Town. There is also a spring tucked behind it that flows all year long. The mosque is beautiful too in that it is made with the same stones as the houses.

The government has invested in this location and equipped it with the different amenities for a tourist destination, including a large parking lot and a playground area. However, we visited one afternoon during the week and had the place almost to ourselves. Sunset was a great time to come as the temperatures were cooling and the lighting was great for photos.

Al Soudah Mountain

This peak sits 3,000 meters above sea level in Saudi Arabia’s mountain range about an hour from Abha. Here there are several viewpoints, walking pathways (concrete ones) and a series of bridges that will lead you to the different viewpoints & through the Juniper-covered forest. If you’re looking for an extensive hiking trail this probably isn’t it, as it is relatively short; but because of the high elevation we started to feel winded much faster than we normally would.

It is a wonderful view of the valley below. However, this area is also home to baboons that live in the mountains. Several locals are seen carrying in their cooking supplies to enjoy a lunch in the area, which seemed a bit risky. LOL. We sat on a raised wall and as soon as we took a sandwich out, several of the baboons started to approach. Luckily, there were some people who were picking up garbage in the area that scared them back off, but just be aware! We ended up just taking our food back to the car to eat there.

Rijal Alma Heritage Village

Two children looking up at the Rijal Alma "Gingerbread Houses" in the Asir Mountains.

This ancient Aseeri village is about a 90-minute drive from Abha or 30-minute drive from Al Soudah. The road takes you from the top of the mountain almost straight vertically down the mountain through a series of bends and turns. Its historical significance was its location in the valley of the ancient trade route between Yemen and the Arabian Peninsula, as well as a major point for Muslims journeying to Medina & Mecca from Yemen. It was built up against the bend of the mountainside to protect it from invaders and various watch towers are visible. The village is mentioned as early as 636 CE. However, it is most notable for its defeat over the Ottoman army that was 50,000 strong, which caused the forced treaty signing to grant Asir independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1825.

The village is called ‘The Gingerbread Village’ as the stone houses are all uniform with decorative lumps of sugar-white quartz on different areas of the structures as well as around the windows. In addition, the windows and doors are all a bright color of green, blue, yellow, etc. Entrance into the village was free, but if you wanted to attend the museum it was 20 SAR per adult. The museum is small but has several artifacts, and what I found most interesting was the well preserved brightly painted walls & doors.

al habala tourist park

To reach the village you can either take the cable car from Soudah National Park complex or by road. During the winter, the cable car doesn’t run so we just drove to the village.

Al Habala Ancient Village

This 400-year-old ancient village is literally sitting off the edge of a large canyon wall – about 300 yards from the top –and is often known as the ‘hanging village.’ It is about an hour’s drive from Abha. The name of the village – Habala – comes from the Arabic world for rope, because historically the village was only accessible by rope ladder. The village was originally inhabited by a tribe known as the ‘flower men’ because they wore garlands of dried herbs and flowers in their hair. Similar to other villages in the mountains, it was built during the Ottoman Empire to flee the Turks.

Habala "Hanging Village" sits literally on the side of the canyon wall.

Today the village can only be reached by cable car. However, the cable car was temporarily closed during our visit. However, we couldn’t verify whether that was because we were visiting during the winter or if they had it closed for other reasons. So unfortunately, we had to view the village from the edge. But supposedly the village has people dressed up in traditional attire doing performances, as well as places to enjoy coffee & tea in the old village, during the summer tourist season. The Al-Habala Museum also was temporarily closed during our visit (Dec. 2021).

Habala Park cliffs in Saudi Arabia.

Supposedly it is also common for the fog to envelop the mountain during the winter days, but we didn’t get the privilege of seeing that.

We searched for areas to hike around Al Habala, but came up short, as they aren’t really labeled on the map; and in general, we just think that hiking – like we are used to in North America & Europe -- isn’t a big thing in Saudi Arabia. We even headed to Alqroon Forest to see if we could find some hiking paths there. However, as we were accessing the hillside with trees, one of the park rangers came over to tell us that it was dangerous to hike down, so we were unable to proceed. Instead, we drove on a crazy steep & twisty mountain road before we got to a junction where the pristine road just turned to a T-junction of two dirt-sand roads. Since we didn’t have any 4-wheel drive capabilities we just had to turn around and ascend back up the mountain back to Abha.

Abha Tuesday Souk

This marketplace in the Al Muftaha district is known for selling honey and other goods such as clothing and handicrafts. However, the name is a bit confusing, as we went on a Saturday and it was still open. We enjoyed wandering around looking at the different things. However, you can tell that this area isn’t a huge international tourist destination, as we were trying to look for a couple of small souvenirs and had a really hard time finding some! One of my favorite parts about the souq was just getting a better taste for the local culture. We arrived during prayer time so many of the shops closed during this time, which has been customary across the country. While some of the shops just halfway closed their door, others just tied together pieces of clothing to signify that it was closed! Talk about a safe and trusting society – I loved it!

The alley of the Tuesday Souq-Market from Abha, Saudi Arabia.

Shamsan Castle Ottoman – Qishleh

This castle is one of the oldest in the Abha region and dates back to the Ottoman Empire. Most of its outer walls are still standing and it has three towers, as well as a courtyard inside. However, when we visited in December it was closed and we were only able to walk around outside the castle. From different online reviews it sounds like it was closed as of September 2021 as it needs some restoration work.

Al-Dhabab Walkway

This walkway runs along the edge of Abha and provides spectacular views of the valley and highway below. It is said that often times the clouds will fill the valley below and you are literally above the clouds. However, during our time in Abha there were no foggy or super cloudy days.

Other Attractions in Abha:

There are a few other places that are noted as being places to visit while in Abha, including High City, Green Mountain and Al Muftaha. To us, High City and Green Mountain seemed more like a commercialized tourist attraction, so we ended up just skipping those. There is a cable car that runs between the two, but in our opinion, it seemed quite expensive for the view you would get. High City also just seemed to be a place for various stores and shops.

One area that we did want to try to visit was Al Muftaha. This is a cultural village in the heart of Abha that has a variety of art galleries and displays, as well as the village is set up to look like the historical villages. Unfortunately, it was surrounded by construction barriers and seemed to be under construction. I guess when you travel during the low tourism season you run into issues like these from time to time.

Mountains are our happy place so it was a nice area to explore and see this different type of mountain range, as well as the spunky baboons that came with them. The ancient villages built on the mountainsides are so unique to this area and they were the highlights of exploring the southern area of Saudi Arabia. Our only world of caution is that if heading there during the off season, there might be several things closed. Although it was a lot of driving during our time there – from Jeddah up to the northern part of Al Ula, back to Jeddah and down to Abha & back to Jeddah again – we feel like we really saw a lot of the unique areas of Saudi Arabia and really got to explore places off the beaten path.

Introduction to Asir & Jizan Provinces

Saudi Arabia is an astounding country of contrasts and diverse landscapes and is a truly wondrous and eye-opening location to visit. In this post you’ll discover how to independently drive to some of the most iconic sites in Asir (Aseer) and Jizan (Jazan) provinces of Saudi’s south west. You’ll see incredible landmarks such as the monumental Rijal Almaa heritage village and the breathtaking Habala Hanging Village which is accessed by a clifftop cable car. Furthermore, you’ll explore the lush Wadi Lajab by foot and ascend to great heights in the Faifa Mountain villages!

al habala tourist park

A Note on Climate

Note that the majority of sea-level Saudi is virtually impossible to visit during the summer months (especially July and August) due to the extreme heat and humidity. However, with these mountainous regions reaching 2500 – 3000 metres above sea level, they sustain much cooler environments. Many locals will thus escape the scorching summer and retreat to their homes elevated in the mountains.

This is the perfect Saudi road trip to do during the summer, since you’ll be at altitude in the cooler mountainous climate!

What Other Amazing Places Can I Visit In Saudi Arabia?

Arrive Abha International Airport & collect rental car

Airport connections.

Abha Airport has few international connections but predominantly serves as a regional airport. Therefore, for most, you’ll first fly into one of the major cities such as Riyadh, Jeddah or Dammam and connect to Abha. We flew in on a Friday night to Riyadh, stayed overnight at the nearby Riyadh Marriott Airport Hotel and then caught the red-eye flight from Riyadh to Abha at 06.30am on Saturday morning. It pays to stay close to the airport because today is full of incredible activities and you’ll need all the sleep you can muster!

Rental Cars at Abha Airport

After collecting your bags at Abha Airport, exit the terminal building and turn to your right. About 100 metres up the path is the hire car building. You’ll find providers such as Yelo , Alamo and Enterprise . We rented a Hyundai Tucson SUV for 2 days for 750 Saudi Riyals (SAR) through Enterprise. The car yards were full of SUVs and we had not pre-booked, despite the websites saying there was no availability! If following this route, then you’ll also need to request drop off at a different location (Jizan Airport).

However to prebook your vehicle for peace of mind, click below.

Do I Have To Drive?

No, there are locally based tour operators who can drive you. However, note that tour times will be longer. Additionally, you’ll most likely need to plan day 1 and day 2 of these itineraries through different operators; departing from Abha for Rijal Almaa and departing Jizan for Habala and Wadi Lajab. To book a tour , click here .

Soudah Mountains

Be prepared for jaw-dropping beauty! At 3,015 metres above sea level, the area is known for its dense juniper tree covered mountains. After picking up drinking water and a few snacks for the car it’s time to depart Abha. You’ll pass through the glorious Soudah mountains en route to Rijal Almaa. Note that the mountain roads are incredibly steep and winding, so employ full concentration! Along the way there are various divinely beautiful scenic viewpoints to stop at. In the valley beneath, you can see the village of Rijal Almaa.

al habala tourist park

Rijal Almaa Heritage Village

The striking facade of the ancient village of Rijal Almaa greets all visitors with its traditional aesthetic of white painted window frames on solid stone, mud and wood buildings. At 900 years old, it’s steeped in history. The village was a natural corridor linking those coming from Yemen and the Levant to the Muslim religious sites of Makkah and Madinah which makes it an important regional commercial centre. The homes were known as forts and palaces, of which about 60 are existing today. Some of them reach 8 storeys high but they appear much higher due to their graduated bases on the mountain slope.

al habala tourist park

On careful inspection inside the rooms, visitors can see inscriptions known as ‘Al Qatt art’. This is a collection of harmonious shapes and colours usually placed by village women.

The Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities has commenced a rehabilitation project for the village. For 20 SAR per adult, guests can climb up many of the steps and ramps between forts. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes! There is a refreshments area and shop at its base. Here you’ll find icecreams, drinks, souvenirs, clothes, pottery and even burning frankincense on show!

al habala tourist park

Rijal Almaa Heritage Museum

Within the village is a heritage museum that occupies the rooms of a previous fort. You’ll need a stooped posture to navigate down the bright green painted stairways due to the low rooves. The museum is called the ‘Men of the Brightest Heritage Museum” and resides within the Al Al-wan Palace. Its construction dates back to more than four centuries!

The museum displays the village’s unique heritage and there are more than 2000 antiquities on display, including manuscripts, tools, weapons, art and jewellery.

Return to Abha

The return drive to Abha takes you back up through the Soudah mountains and past some ravenous baboons. Don’t get too close because they’re extraordinarily cheeky and unafraid of humans.

al habala tourist park

Green Mountain, Abha

Locally known as Jabal Thera, this tourist attraction in Abha is a literal naming. It is in fact, a mountain wrapped in green lighting! It is most spectacular at night whereby tourists can ascend via cable car to eat at one of the many restaurants atop. Sadly this itinerary leaves little time to visit it but if you do plan on stopping by, note that it opens from 2pm.

al habala tourist park

The Art Street, Abha

We pass briefly through the beautiful Art Street lined with vibrant purple jacarandas en route to Habala but for those with more time, it’s worth a stop in its own right. The famous Art Street in Abha is home to around 10 art galleries, a theatre that hosts shows and parties, as well as many restaurants and cafes. It’s a lovely location for a relaxing stroll amongst some natural greenery and is located just off King Khalid Road in the Al Muftah Village of Abha.

al habala tourist park

Hanging Village, Habala

Driving on to Habala, you’ll find yourself at the precipice of a huge cliff! The locals absolutely LOVE this area and countless groups will surely be out picnicking or camping along the plateau. At the very edge is the Habala Cable Car, taking guests down to the iconic Hanging Village. Sadly the cable car was closed on the day we visited due to heavy storms, thunder and lightning! This was most incongruous with my expectations of a hot, arid Saudi Arabia! However the cliff ledge was still a buzz of activity with people outside enjoying the rain.

al habala tourist park

The village was established during the Ottoman empire when the locals tried to flee the Turks. Originally the village could only be reached by a hanging rope, thus the name Habala (Habal = rope in Arabic). The cable car was added during the 1990s to promote tourism to the region. It’s only a 5 minute journey but I’m informed that the views are extraordinary!

al habala tourist park

Check in to Al Habala Resort

Situated on the adjacent cliff ledge to the cable car, is Al Habala Resort. We chose it due to its close proximity to our final activity for the day, as well as shaving off about 45 minutes en route to Wadi Lajab the next morning (compared to a hotel in Abha). For a detailed walk through of the villa interior, see my YouTube video here .

To make a hotel booking at Al Habala Resort , click below.

Dinner in Khamis Mushait

In another Saudi Arabian tourism discovery, we found out that Al Habala Resort did not have an onsite cafe or restaurant (or vending machine!) and so we ventured back out to find an evening meal. The resort is more akin to a self serviced apartment, so for guests heading there, I’d highly recommend buying ready-to-eat meals or your own food to cook.

If you have a die-hard spirit of adventure however, a 45 minute drive will see you on the outskirts of Khamis Mushait. Here we had an authentic Saudi Arabian style meal at ‘ Diamond Restaurant ‘. We were seated on a carpeted booth floor with an gigantic meal of herbed spiced chicken and flavoursome red rice set before us! I’m personally so thrilled we enjoyed this experience but after a full day of sight-seeing, you may prefer to relax in your own abode (no judgements!).

al habala tourist park

Al Jahamah Heritage Village

It’s another early start today and I’d recommend hitting the road by no later than 7am. Our first stop is Al Jahamah Heritage Village in Asir Province, after which we head on to Jizan. (Note that if you are entering this in Google Maps, you’ll have to search ‘Al-Jahamah Historical Village’).

Al Jahamah is a set of ruins at the end of a dirt road and is not developed as a tourist destination. Be careful exploring the village as there are no apparent occupational health and safety warnings or precautions taken on your behalf! However, its deep orange-red stone and mud appearance is a striking contrast to the low green shrubland surrounding it which renders it worth a quick stop for a photo.

al habala tourist park

Driving To Wadi Lajab

It is now time to exit Asir and enter Jizan Province. We will reach a point that is just 10 km from the Yemeni border! Along the way are breathtaking scenes from the highway which has been developed into the side of the mountain. We felt as if we were floating above the clouds and couldn’t help but stop along the way to take it all in. Semicircular tunnels are dotted along the highway and provide a point of interest along the way.

al habala tourist park

We follow the mountainous ridge all the way through to Wadi Lajab, past spectacular scenery and some interesting animals crossing the road!

al habala tourist park

Entrance to Wadi Lajab

The entrance to Wadi Lajab is easy to miss but you’ll soon enough see a road sign and others heading in the same direction. Again, it’s another very popular local hangout! A 4WD is recommended to traverse the rough stony wadi floor until you reach a point where vehicles can no longer pass. I’d recommend leaving all but the essentials in your vehicle.

Wadi Lajab Hike

Essential Items To Take

  • Waterproof backpack or bag
  • Water shoes or thick soled shoes
  • Swimsuit if you wish to swim
  • Conservative clothing for females

al habala tourist park

Inside Wadi Lajab

Wadi Lajab is a stunning natural masterpiece with variable sized pockets of water at the base of the cavern. Wadi means valley or ravine in Arabic. The rock face is steep and you’ll have a ball negotiating your way under and over rocks, through water and even up a ladder! The end of the hike for many is a long rope ladder up the side of a huge boulder. On the other side is a waterhole for swimming enthusiasts. If you are going to stick to this itinerary, it would be a push to fit it in (and possibly perilously unsafe!). The local Saudi people are extremely friendly and will be curious to know your name and where you are from!

al habala tourist park

Faifa Mountains

Next we drive through more steep winding roads to the gorgeous Faifa Mountains: which I nicknamed the Amalfi Coast of Saudi Arabia! This is probably a slightly grandiose description but you’ll be amazed by this remarkable ‘city in the sky’. It really is beautiful and unlike any mountain village I’d seen before, with buildings perched on seemingly endless rows of manicured green terraces.

al habala tourist park

Head straight for the Faifa Hotel , which undoubtedly has the best views in the region and a lovely rooftop restaurant with private booths overlooking the scenery. Stop here for a quick coffee before heading on to Jizan Airport for your flight home. If you’re not strict on time, stay overnight at Faifa Hotel and watch as the lights come on across the mountain at dusk. Pure magic!

al habala tourist park

Jizan Airport

As we wind down the road and leave the unrivalled beauty of the Faifa Mountains behind us, it’s onwards to a slightly lacklustre drive back to Jizan Airport. However, it’s still a marvellous opportunity to observe local Saudi life and watch as town folk go about their evening business.

You’ll need to return the rental car at the airport and then it’s one last farewell to Saudi Arabia before heading home!

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

By Sarah Maddox

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 5:04 AM EDT / CBS News

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality .

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

Eclipse map of totality

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT.

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT.

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

The below table by NASA shows when the eclipse will start, peak and end in 13 cities along the eclipse's path.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017.

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT.

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET.

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com .

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.
