How to Get to Ecuador’s Amazon Jungle from Baños
- February 10, 2021
Traveling from Baños to the Amazon Jungle: What to Consider
As you plan your trip to the Amazon from Baños, consider the following factors: how long , how much , and when .
How long? — Plan to spend at least two nights in the Amazon, depending on what area you’re visiting. If you’re planning to travel deep into the Amazon, for instance, to Yasuní National Park, expect to stay at least four nights. Are you a backpacker, or do you prefer maintaining your daily comforts? In the Ecuadorian Amazon, there isn’t much of an in-between category, and costs vary significantly.
How much? — As a backpacker, expect to take cheap but sometimes inconvenient and uncomfortable public transport to your destination and embrace a “go-with-the-flow” attitude. As a more comfort-focused traveler, you might need to book your trip in advance online or in Baños or Puyo to ensure everything goes as planned. Chances are the costs will be a little higher.
When? — The Amazon consists of two seasons: wet and dry. Depending on what you want to see and experience, choose your timing wisely. Read the section below, “Best Time to Travel to the Amazon Jungle,” for specifics.
How to Travel from Baños to Ecuador’s Amazon Jungle and a Few Places You Can’t Miss
The cheap and simple way to get to the Amazon from Baños is by bus. Buses depart regularly from the Baños Bus Terminal ( Terminal Terrestre Baños , in Spanish) to the jungle city of Puyo or the towns along the way like Mera.
Just one hour down the road from Baños, Mera is a small town, home to fewer than 1000 inhabitants. If you stop there, make sure to visit its breathtaking lookout point, El Mirador de Mera.
From Puyo, you can arrange day-trip tours and activities like visits to nearby indigenous community-led tourism initiatives only 30–45 minutes away by road. Among these are the Indichuris lookout point ( Mirador de Indichuris) and Hola Vida Waterfall (Cascada Hola Vida) , both belong to the Kichwa indigenous communities of the surrounding area.
If you’re hoping to buy locally-produced souvenirs, check out Omere Texturas de la Selva , located between Baños and Puyo, where you can buy intricate, hand-made products from the Waorani indigenous tribe.
What You Need to Know Before Booking a Tour to the Amazon Jungle
There are three general approaches to planning your trip to the Amazon from Baños. They are:
Book in Advance — Do some online research at home and book all-inclusive tour packages before arriving in Ecuador. The advantage to this approach is that you’re worry-free upon landing, but the downside is that it comes at a relatively high price.
Book from Baños — Opt for a local tour agency in Baños with set itineraries and packages from which to choose. The advantage of this approach is that you might find more competitive prices. Still, you’ll have to make your way to Baños on your own. Also, there may be limited availability for any number of reasons like high- or low-season (in terms of tourism) and weather.
Go With the Flow — From Baños, continue down the lush, forested slopes towards the Amazon and see what happens. You’ll definitely find more affordable options this way, but this approach is also less time-efficient.
What to Pack Before Traveling
As you plan your trip to the Amazon, there are two main things you want to avoid: getting wet and insect bites. The trouble with getting wet in the Amazon is that, since the climate is quite humid, your clothes and socks may never dry, so just keep that in mind as you pack.
Make sure you have rain protection like a poncho or light raincoat (water-resistant clothing isn’t good enough).
- If you’re planning to hike, take a pair of rubber boots (you can buy some in Baños) or make sure the tour or lodge provides these.
- Take a few extra pairs of socks (these are especially nice to use with rubber boots to avoid getting blisters).
- Pack a couple of Tek Towels™ (or equivalent) and some quick-dry shirts.
- Pack a light sweater, as it can feel chilly after a wet afternoon.
Avoiding Insect Bites and Stings:
- Make sure you buy insect repellent in Baños.
- Pack a breathable long-sleeve shirt and pair of pants.
- If you’re planning to venture deeper into the rainforest, make sure the hotel, lodge, or community you’re visiting provides mosquito nets.
- Are you allergic to bites or stings? Pack an over-the-counter antihistamine like Benedryl or Claritin. And if you are allergic to stings, make sure to pack your Epi-Pen (injectable epinephrine).
- Avoid going to the Amazon during the warmer, wetter months when there are more mosquitos.
- Avoid sandy river banks where sand fleas abound. Sand fleas don’t respond to mosquito repellent. Instead, try rubbing a skin-safe oil on your skin, impeding the fleas’ movement on your skin.
Other items you should pack for your trip to the Amazon region include:
- An extra set of clothes
- Sun protection in the form of sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and light, long-sleeve shirts
- Flip-flops (you’ll want to allow your feet to breathe while protecting them from the ground and its inhabitants)
- Reusable water bottle (make sure you have access to potable water on your trip or else consider taking a portable camping-style water filter)
- Camera or phone and something to protect it from moisture
- Binoculars, especially if you want to take part in bird-watching activities.
Best Time to Travel to the Amazon Jungle
There are two seasons in the Amazon: wet and dry. Wet season typically extends from March through June and then again around November and December. Dry season tends to take place from December through February and July through October.
If you hope to explore the Amazon by boat, the rivers are more easily navigated during the wet season. Depending on the region you visit, you can expect to see more caimans , anacondas, primates, and birds during the wet season, not to mention mosquitos.
If you prefer exploring on foot, with fewer mosquitos and less rain, you might want to visit during the dry season, but expect warmer weather, about 86°F – 95°F (30ºC – 35ºC), during the day. You might see more animals along the water’s edge, but the heat forces many of them, especially birds, to retreat deeper into the forest.
High-season for tourists tends to occur between June and September, as well as December and January; so, you may find higher prices and less availability during these months.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do I need any vaccine to enter the Amazon Jungle No, it is not necessary. However, you can consult your physician for information and advice before traveling to the Ecuadorian Amazon.
What is the weather on the Amazon Jungle like? It’s sunny all year-round, and like any other tropical rainforest, it can be hot and humid. The average year-round temperature is 27°C (80°F), with nights being slightly cooler. December to June is the rainy season, with April and May experiencing more rain, and temperatures normally between 23°C (73°F) and 30°C (86°F). July to November is the dry season, with temperatures from 26°C (78°F) to 40°C (104°F).
BAÑOS SAFETY TIPS
- Make sure to use mosquito repellent. While the Rio Pastaza is not located in a malarial area, there have been rare cases of yellow fever reported. Aside from that, it’s just good practice to protect yourself against mosquitos so that you’re not covered with itchy and uncomfortable bug bites.
- Wear sunscreen every day. Even when you don’t feel like you’re getting burned, the equatorial latitude and relatively high altitude of Baños can do a lot of damage to your skin.
- Baños is a pretty safe town and petty crime is rare, but it’s still a good idea to avoid carrying too much cash on you.

Then if time permits drive to one of the most wonderful, amazon lookouts of the Amazon area, to take astonishing pictures and enjoy the sunset with a drink.
Amazon- Drive Back
After Breakfast
We will visit an impressive lookout of the Pastaza river in case we did not visit the day before, where we can take some amazing pictures of the amazon rainforest and its basin.
Then we will do a 30 minute hike towards the Waterfall, and have the chance to bathe in its crystal clear waters. (for this activity we will need confortable shoes)
After the hike depending on the time we will have a typical local lunch or continue to visit a Quichua community, and do the activities the community has decided to do for us.
For lunch we will have the chance to try a typical Amazon jungle dish called Maito de Pescado, (or other options) which is fish that has been cooked in the bijao leaves found in the surrounding forest. This is a very healthy, unique and tasty dish!
To enter the community we need to whistle and enter in their wooden canoe across the Puyo river, meet the indigenous community and connect with nature learning about local traditions and culture from the quichua communities who at this time become our native guides. Here you will see and practice serbatana, warrior face painting with a plant that can give us a temporary jungle tattoo!
And observe their local customs and dance, sometimes they bring some of their animals out as the Boa snake. And last get to their little shop where they sell hand made crafts with local seeds, feathers, local hunting arrows and local woods, as well as their clay pots and ornaments.
To end the day, while driving we will watch the sunset from above the jungle canopy.
Drive Back to Quito on a 5.5 hour drive

The Great South American Journey: Quito to Rio Adventure
This is the best G adventures tour I have done in terms of itinerary and people I was traveling with. I had a fantastic time with a great group of people. The only feedback I will give G is I feel the CEO guides are pressured to get 9s or 10s in their reviews and hence transmit that to us which made me not leave a review on the G website as I felt I could not be completely honest without harming the tour guides' rating. This culture should change if you want constructive feedback. I loved all 4 of my CEOs on my tour but 2 of them were outstanding (10/10s) and I felt as a result of above, I could not give them the credit they were due without causing harm to the other 2 who were also good but more 7/10s.

As a traveler, I must debunk the news outlets misconception that Ecuador is not safe. My recent trip proved otherwise, I was fortunate to have a very friendly tour guide who not only ensured my safety but also made my journey unforgettable. Exploring Ecuador's great nature revealed breathtaking scenic views that left me in awe of this country's beauty. People genuinely care about their environment. Everyone seemed dedicated to preserving Ecuador's natural wonders. Ecuador is a country that works tirelessly to protect its environment. I was impressed by the sustainable initiatives in place, from eco-friendly accommodations reserved by my guide to strict conservation policies. My guide always available, thanks to his flexibility and punctuality. Whether it was adjusting my itinerary or ensuring timely pickups, My guide made every effort to accommodate my needs. Lastly, I was amazed by my guide's extensive knowledge of Ecuador's history, culture, and biodiversity. His insights added depth to my experiences and enriched my journey. Great experience in the jungle with a great guide! Freddy was good with everyone making sure all were comfortable and accommodated. The itinerary was full of activities that were moved around due to various factors. The transportation was local buses, trucks and some hired. The bus ride was comfortable but a long five hours. I would recommend having your own snacks before getting on the bus. The accommodation was basic but expected with lovely hammocks for down time. The only surprise was no hot water at all. The best part for me were the meals provided. Great experience of local cooking and variety.

Ecuador Amazon Tours
Ecuador Amazon tours offer a unique chance to unlock some of the untouched secrets of this raw and pristine forest that occupies a third of the country to the east of the Andes. Begin your adventure with a short 30 minute flight from Quito across the Andes to the jungle city of Coca, known as the gateway to the Ecuadorian Amazon ever since Francisco de Orellana first navigated the river on his 1541 expedition.
From here take a luxurious Ecuador Amazon river cruise along the River Napo, and watch colorful toucans, macaws and tanagers on excursions to hidden clay licks that fringe the water, or ride in motorized and dugout canoes to a remote Ecuadorian rainforest lodge like the La Selva Lodge overlooking Garzacocha Lagoon or the Napo Wildlife Center on the banks of Añangu Lake, deep in the Yasuní National Park and the territory of the indigenous Kichwa people. Wildlife tours in Ecuador’s Amazonian Oriente are humming with life and boast a sweeping biodiversity.

Spot a wide variety of animals and make incredible hikes in several parts of the Amazon rainforest. You will be able to decide which program fits your wishes the best. There are different Amazon regions you can visit in Ecuador such as the Cuyabeno Reserve, the Yasuni National Park, and the beginning of the Amazon close to Tena.
Embark on an extraordinary adventure through the Ecuadorian Amazon, a biodiverse region praised by National Geographic Journeys . Spanning 42,000 miles , this pristine rainforest offers a raw and untouched experience. Encounter over 1,600 animal species and engage with nine indigenous communities , some living in isolation. Immerse yourself in nature’s wonders and local cultures. Rebecca Adventure Travel provides a range of Amazon Tours tailored to your preferences, whether you seek thrilling exploration or tranquil relaxation . Choose your ideal Ecuadorian Amazon trip and prepare for an unforgettable journey to this remarkable destination.
Green red-eyed tree frog
Cuyabeno Tours
Cuyabeno is located far into the Amazon , only reachable by boat. Because of that, it is one of the most pristine places on the planet. You can reach it from Lago Agrio, which is the pick-up point for the Cuyabeno Amazon Tours.
The Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve has 14 lagoons and trees that can reach 164 inches. With this in mind, you’ll see the forest going until the land disappears and becomes small canals. In fact, you’ll find many different species and ecosystems. This surreal scenery is called the flooded Amazon forest. Obviously, here, you can see an extensive variety of animals from pink dolphins, manatees, monkeys, and so on.
About the local communities, you will get to know about the Siona, Secoya, Cofan, and Kichwa . All of them will tell you more about their ways of living , handicrafts, medicinal plants and so much more.
9 Day Colonial Quito & Amazon Cuyabeno Eco Lodge
6 Day Amazon Cuyabeno & Papallacta Adventure
5 Day Amazon Cuyabeno & Papallacta Adventure
4 Day Amazon Cuyabeno Adventure
Another Amazon Tours destination is Tena, located in Napo province . A small town near Cuyabeno but not as deep into the jungle so here, you are more in touch with the world in general. Nevertheless, you can still spot animals and get to know local communities. Transportation to Napo is easier since you can get here by car or by bus.
The activities in Napo are more adventurous : like tubbing and rafting. Also, there are amazing routes to hike to the incredible waterfalls. You’ll have the chance to see the clay lick bank called Saladero . Hundreds of parrots and parakeets will come to lick the soil that is rich in minerals. All of them help the birds to improve their digestion.
Colorful birds licking the bank of clay
If you want to support a local refuge AmaZoonico Rescue is an animal rescue center. It has sheltered moreover 3,500 animals since its beginning and 1,500 of them have been brought back to nature. You will see rescued monkeys, macaws, ocelots, and more.
Here the Kichwa community will welcome all the visitors to let them know about ancestral traditions , medicinal plants, their relationship with nature , and how they live on the banks of the river.
3 or 4 Day Amazon Napo Adventure
Yasuni Tours
This is one of the main destinations on Amazon Tours . The Yasuni Biosphere Reserve is the largest protected area in the Ecuadorian continental land. You can get here by plane or car. Then depending on your destination, you’ll have to get a boat.
One of Rebecca Adventure Travel’s interns, Indi, went to the Yasuni National Park. In order to experience for herself the Amazon rainforest, “the head of the community was a woman, and they call her ‘ Abuela ’ which means grandmother in Spanish. She sang a song to welcome us, and we could try the traditional drink called ‘ Chicha ’. She was a very nice and strong lady, and it was nice meeting her and hearing her stories about life in the Amazon. ”
There are only a few lodges and more campsites, one’s more glamping style and others more rudimentary . Be aware that the campsites have no electricity so you will need power banks for your electronic devices. Since you are more deep into the rainfores t, your trip will be a more Amazonian lifestyle. The local communities will tell you how they live. And how they have adapted their traditions to the occidental way of living.
If you are not sure which one of the Amazon Tours suits you. You can read about the 5 major differences between Cuyabeno and Yasuni Reserve.
Indigenous women navigating the river
There are two Amazon Tours in the Yasuni, for explorers and adventure lovers. For the first one, you’ll stay at a lodge , and there are incredible activities planned like hiking, canopying, caiman spotting by night, creek paddling, and more.
And for real adventurers , the kayak tour is recommended. You will kayak from campsite to campsite . Which is hosted by the Kichwa communities of this very remote area.

This unique destination offers a magical experience similar to the Amazon rainforest but with its own distinct character. Surrounded by stunning altitudes ranging from 360 to 4,480 meters above sea level, Mashpi Lodge provides a cloudy, humid, and warm climate that can change within minutes, creating an ethereal atmosphere where you feel like you’re touching the clouds .
With over 1,700 bird species , 400 tree species , and a plethora of frogs, Mashpi Lodge immerses guests in the rich biodiversity of the area. The lodge’s commitment to sustainability and its harmonious integration with nature has earned it recognition as a sustainability retreat in South America.
Not only does Mashpi Lodge offer luxurious accommodations amidst the jungle, but it also conducts research projects focused on conservation and environmental impact . In fact, the discovery of a new species of glass frog with a unique cricket-like chirping sound has sparked efforts to obtain UNESCO World Heritage protection for the Choco Andino and Pastaza regions, based on their acoustic value. Mashpi Lodge truly offers a one-of-a-kind experience, where guests can appreciate the forest’s sounds and become part of nature while preserving its delicate balance.
3-Day Mashpi Cloud Forest Experience
Baños Tours
Baños is known as the last big city still located in the mountains before reaching the jungle. The atmosphere is laid back and relaxed in this sub-tropical climate .
Travelers love to come to Baños for outdoor activities like rafting, canyoning, horseback riding, canopy, mountain biking, or hiking . There is also a beautiful route through the most impressive waterfalls of Ecuador, Ruta de las Cascadas.
