Jordan has been writing a Paris blog for two years and became a Discover Walks writer in early 2018. While most of our Paris writers are born and raised Parisians, Jordan is not. She is a Californian who moved to Paris in 2013. We like her different point of view when she writes - of course our tour guides are a great source of tips and inspiration in her articles. We hope you enjoy all of them.

Studying in France: The American University of Paris

Studying in France: The American University of Paris

Even before the Second World War, as early as 1830, Americans had discovered the lure of Paris. Writers, artists, doctors and politicians made the hazardous journey across the Atlantic for their lives to be changed forever. Figures like Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry James, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Mark Twain, Mary Cassatt and John Singer Sargent all flourished and fell in love with their new city.

The 1920s saw a new influx of Americans like Hemingway and Scott Fitzgerald, Dos Passos and Henry Miller. The 1940s attracted writers and musicians, James Baldwin and Miles Davis, while Josephine Baker stunned audiences and loved her new homeland so much, she worked undercover for the allies during the Second World War.

It was not only artists drawn to Paris; travelers, backpackers, dreamers, and adventurers of all ages trod the now well worn path to the City of Light. But above all, it was the young who made their way to Paris. Some of the very lucky ones stayed and studied there.

In 1962, Dr. Lloyd DeLamater, a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, founded the American College in Paris (ACP). At first a modest enterprise with about 100 students, the ACP offered a two-year junior college course. Most of the students were the sons and daughters of American service personnel and expatriates living in France and Europe. None the less, 15 part-time professors taught an impressive range of courses including, English, Economics, Fine Arts, Government History, French, German, Spanish, Philosophy, Mathematics and Sociology. Two years later in 1964, the first influx of students received their diplomas of study enabling them to complete their degree in the United State.

From the college’s first inception, one of its major aspirations was the promotion of culture, not only in the classroom, but also in field trips to museums , monuments and cities, to broaden students’ understanding and give them the physical experience of their subject. Almost 60 years later that has not changed and The Cultural Program still organizes ever more extensive, didactive, faculty-led study trips. These study trips can last from one day to month-long excursions to a variety of global destinations that can include disparate places: the Vatican (studying art history), Fez in Morocco (observing the effects of globalization), Iceland and India. (There is a possibility of aid with funding from the University’s Coup de Pouce fund.)

However, over the years, much has changed. By 1978, and doubtless due in some part to the decrease in the U.S. military presence in Europe, over 50% of the students were non American. In 1974, ACP became an accredited four-year bachelor’s degree-granting college.

Already one of the oldest American institutions of higher learning in Europe, and the first to be established in France, it was almost inevitable that by 1988 its name was changed to The American University of Paris, and by 2005, the University was offering courses culminating in a Master’s. AUP offers majors in 26 subjects as diverse as Global Communications, Film Studies, History, Law and Society, Journalism, Philosophy and Middle East Pluralities. What’s more, 39 minors are offered. The average class size is 15 and the average student-to-faculty ratio is 8:1.

Student numbers average now 1200, 1,000 of which are undergraduates and 200 graduates. There are some 103 nationalities among the students, 21 nationalities in the faculty and 65 languages spoken on campus. The top six countries students represented are USA, UK, Switzerland, Italy, Lebanon and Morocco. The six most common passports are USA, France, UK, Russia, Canada and India and the five most common languages in 2021 were Spanish, French, Russian, Arabic and German, making the AUP a melting pot of impressive proportions.

The university’s language of instruction is English, although students must show a level of proficiency in French prior to graduation.

It would be remiss to ignore the location of the university as a secondary attraction. The setting in the 7th arrondissement is the very heart of Paris, two steps from the Seine and the Musée d’Orsay , within easy walking distance to the Louvre and Notre-Dame on one side, and in the other direction, the Eiffel Tower, Les Invalides and the Champs-Elysées.

From its humble beginnings in the American Church, the university has spread exponentially. The Quai d’Orsay Learning Commons, a building of ten floors over 2000 square meters, encompasses the AUP Library housing more than 41,000 books, 545,000 ebooks, reading rooms with internet access, and staff on hand to assist with research. The Learning Commons, which includes both the library and the Academic Resource Centre are linked by a glass atrium to the Combes Student Life Center, the two buildings centralizing all student services in one complex. The Combes building, renovated in 2014, houses the AMEX Cafe, student clubs, the Thamer Salman Media Center, the Joy and Edward Frieman Environmental Science Center, the AUP Fine Arts Gallery, classrooms, art studios and faculty offices. The AUP Fine Arts Gallery, founded in 2003 by Professor Emeritus Ralph Petty, has welcomed over 120 exhibitions to date and is today curated by Jonathan Shimony, a professor of Fine Arts.

Athletics is an integral part of the university. The first sports team was founded in 1963, a mere year after the university’s creation. Volleyball and equestrian sports were added to the sports program in 2008 and the Athletics Program participates regularly in Regional University Championships and AUP students benefit from preferential gym memberships.

The AUP offers either three- or six-week summer school, a chance for students to live and learn and experience Paris. The university offers a range of subjects including Art History, Business, Psychology and Fashion. The intensive summer course includes French Immersion and Creative Writing.

Graduates will find themselves among illustrious company. Since 1984, the AUP have been awarding honorary degrees to scholars, writers, artists, political figures and researchers. The long list of recipients include Gene Kelly, Olivia de Haviland, Simone Veil, Pierre Salinger, Jessye Norman, Simon Weisenthal, Muriel Spark and I.M. Pei.

Faculty members are no less illustrious and include: Jim Bitterman, senior European correspondent for CNN in Paris; Dan Gunn, writer and translator and the editor of the Samuel Beckett’s Letters project; Madeleine Czigler, fashion journalist; Christy Shields, anthropologist; and Philip Golub, political scientist.

Alumni of note stretch from the aristocracy (Cleo von Adelsheim, German noblewoman and actress; the 11th Duchess of Cadaval, Diana Alvarez Pereira de Melo; Andrea Casiraghi, fourth in line to the Monagesque throne) to an array of other prominent individuals (Fernando Rees, Brazilian professional racing driver; Peggy Lehner, Ohio State Senator; Gina Torry, Senior Advisor, Nobel Peace Prize Global Programs; author Michael J Varhola; and the actor Michael Weatherley).

Although the experience of studying and living in a foreign country is unquestionably life enhancing, it’s also a little daunting. AUP has addressed both parents and students misgivings with a comprehensive care package; the first and perhaps the initially most important is accommodation. All first-year AUP students are required to choose an AUP housing option. This can be in one of AUP’s residences, or through one of their selected housing partners. The options offered are all furnished and located in safe neighborhoods within an easy commute to the university. The shared housing could be in two- or three-bedroomed apartments, or a home stay. Second year students have the option of searching for an independent apartment with the assistance of the Office of Residential Life.

Student clubs and organizations encourage the students to learn and meet other students and make friends with students with similar interests, a vital component for adjusting well in an unfamiliar environment. AUP clubs include AUP for Consent, AUP Oslo Pax Club, Migrant Justice Club, the Debate and Politics Club, AUP philanthropic club, AUP Green, the Student Government Association and the Graduate Student Council.

The university has comprehensive media production workshops, run by the students themselves in print, digital and broadcast. They produce the Peacock Magazine , write articles for The Peacock Plume, and produce videos for Peacock TV, the university’s own student run video production club. The AUP radio club organizes a daily radio show in collaboration with World Radio Paris.

AUP’s admissions process is not purely and strictly led by qualifications. The AUP prefers to have a holistic approach to admissions; by this they mean that they take into consideration a student’s whole profile including grade point average, extracurricular activities, leadership, experience etc. They are looking for students who “will thrive on campus, who are engaged, curious and have a desire to explore, not only the world, but their academic and career interests both inside and outside the classroom.”

The American University of Paris: Summer in Paris

E very summer, The American University of Paris (AUP) opens its doors to visiting students from around the world who come to spend a few weeks taking classes at AUP’s Summer Institutes in the heart of Paris.

Chartered in 1962, AUP is renowned as an international centre of cross-cultural and interdisciplinary teaching and learning. Just 15 minutes’ walk from the Eiffel tower, it is not just its enviable location that puts this world-renowned university in a class of its own. The university’s curriculum combines liberal arts inquiry with preparation for professional life, and student-centred, active learning. The university also offers small class sizes, which ensure that students benefit from their interactions with professors and fellow classmates.

AUP’s multidisciplinary Summer Institutes combine intensive learning with fun, educational excursions, to make sure that students experience both the classroom setting and the cosmopolitan heart of the French capital.

“Our summer institutes cover six thematic categories, with classes lasting from three to six weeks and sessions in June and July,” says Lisa Palazzolo, AUP’s Communications Coordinator. “As a fully-accredited university, our summer courses are transferable for academic credit to the US university system. Students are also able to audit classes if they are not looking to earn credit and just want to take a class for fun,” she adds.

French Language Skills

One of the most popular programmes for visiting students is the immersive French Language and Culture Institute. Students take a test and are placed in one of four levels of French study.

The main aim is to improve grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation and standards are rigorous but there are also perks, such as the chance to start the day with fresh coffee and croissants before class. “It’s not just the classes themselves that are immersive – the entire course is immersive with plenty of cultural activities that take learning beyond the classroom: in the afternoons, our students can join walking tours through Paris’ cobbled streets and explore the historic quarters of the city,” Lisa explains.

Apart from offering students the chance to learn French ‘a la Française’, the university’s other summer institutes include a Creative Writing Institute that gives students the opportunity to study, write and share poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction with professional writers. “It’s a wonderful chance for students to interact with some of the top people in their field – whether novelists, poets or essay writers,” says Lisa. “We get students of all ages who come to take classes over the summer, particularly in our Art History and Fine Art Institute, where students get to know Paris through its many wonderful museums, whilst refining their drawing and painting skills,” she adds.

The American University of Paris | Summer in Paris

Other summer institutes include The Communications and Media Studies Institute and The International Business Institute, both of which allow students to engage in an in-depth exploration of these subjects through an international lens. “Students also get a chance to get up close and personal with local culture via a range of summer excursions offered by The American University of Paris Cultural Programmes: they can join a tour that will take them to admire the flowers and Japanese-inspired gardens of Impressionist painter Monet’s home in Giverny, or they can revisit the tragic history of World War II on the beaches of Normandy,” says Lisa. “There’s even a tour for students who want to learn about the history of Champagne, before tasting some of that famous fizz.”

Discovering Paris

The University also helps students with accommodation and works in partnership with a reputable local housing agency. “No one will feel lost or alone here – we are based in this wonderful city and it is a fundamental part of our curriculum,” Lisa continues. “Our professors and teachers incorporate Paris into their teaching to create a continuous dialogue with the city – one that will help our students get to know the city famed for its gourmet cuisine, architectural landmarks, world-class museums and celebrated artists. We help them to really experience the life and soul of this fascinating, cosmopolitan city.”

Introduction

Following our tradition, Schiller's Madrid campus has a privileged location in the heart of the cultural, social, and business area of Spain's capital. It is very close to the streets of Serrano, Goya, Jorge Juan, and La Castellana and a stone's throw from the Puerta de Alcalá and the Paseo del Prado, recently declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the first historic urban landscape declared in Europe.

The building has been equipped with the most modern facilities and technology. With over 3,000 square meters, it houses advanced learning spaces and provides the necessary conditions to achieve the level of quality and excellence demanded by Schiller International University's methodology, focused on experiential learning and digital educational technology.

Breaking news, anti-israel protesters sue columbia, claiming they’re the real victims.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

A pro-Palestinian group has filed a federal lawsuit against Columbia University — saying anti-Israel protesters with the extremist group Students for Justice in Palestine are the ones being harassed on campus.

The complaint comes as Jewish community leaders and Jewish students have spoken out to say they do not feel safe at the Ivy League school with hundreds of protesters camping out in tents on the lawn, prompting university administrators to allow students to take their classes online for the rest of the year.

A woman with her mouth open, like she is screaming at someone

But, Palestine Legal — which filed the complaint Thursday with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights — said that four pro-Palestinian students and the student group Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine are the real victims.

The group calls for an investigation into the university’s handling of alleged discrimination and harassment against pro-Palestinian students by Columbia students, professors and administrators under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

“As a Palestinian student, I’ve been harassed, doxxed, shouted down and discriminated against by fellow students and professors — simply because of my identity and my commitment to advocating for my own rights and freedoms,” said Maryam Alwan, one of the four students represented in the suit.

“I’m horrified at the way Columbia has utterly failed to protect me from racism and abuse, but beyond that, the university has also played a role in this repression by having me arrested and suspended for peacefully protesting Israel’s genocide in Gaza,” she added.

The anti-Israel students claim they have been “the target of extreme anti-Palestinian, anti-Arab and Islamophobic harassment on campus since Oct. 9, 2023, including receiving multiple death threats as well as being called terrorists and ‘Jew killers.'”

Plus, the students allege they have been treated differently by high-ranking administrators, including Columbia President Minouche Shafik.

“Despite students filing dozens of complaints, Columbia has failed to take meaningful steps to end the harassment, prevent it from occurring, or remedy its effects,” the complaint said.

An example Palestine Legal cites was Shafik’s decision to clear a large campus anti-Israel encampment April 18 by “inviting the New York Police Department (NYPD) onto campus for the first time in decades, leading to the arrest of more than 100 protesters,” the complaint indicates.

Meanwhile, Jewish students were outraged Friday as the pro-Palestine student protesters’ encampment was still there despite Columbia’s deadline for it to evict the campus coming and going — twice .

Palestine Legal partnered with the New York City Liberties Union in a March lawsuit against Columbia for what they call the unlawful suspension of its chapters of Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace for engaging in peaceful protest.

Columbia declined to comment. Palestine Legal didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did DOE.

CITY OF LIGHT

Visiting paris, the aup parent's guide to the city of light, first stop, aup.

The Office of Outreach and Advancement looks forward to welcoming you on AUP's beautiful Parisian campus in our offices at 5, boulevard de La Tour-Maubourg. Our team is available for guided tours of the campus, and to recommend the best spots to explore in Paris.

Paris by Arrondissement

Musée de l’Orangerie (Jardin des Tuileries) - Looking for a calm moment? Head to the ground floor to find Monet’s famous Water Lilies, known in French as the Nymphéas, displayed in two custom-built oval rooms. Originally offered to the French state by Monet after the First World War as a symbol of peace, these astonishing artworks need to be seen in person.

Juveniles (47, rue de Richelieu) -  A friendly, family-run bistro serving up fresh market cooking that will make you want to be a regular. Don’t forget to buy a bottle on the way out to enjoy at home.

Galerie Vivienne (5, rue de la Banque) - Located behind the Bibliothèque Richelieu, this covered arcade was built in 1832. As you wander to a tea room or old bookshop, look down at the floor mosaics and up at the beautiful glass roof.

Pizzeria Popolare (111, rue Réaumur Pizza Popolare) – This restaurant is an experience as much as a meal; don’t be surprised to see lines snaking around the block an hour before it opens. This outpost of the Big Mamma group is nevertheless an ideal place to grab a reasonably priced lunch.

Marché des Enfants (Rouges 26, rue Charlot) - Make time to stop by the oldest food market in Paris. Created in 1615, this friendly spot is ideal for picking up some fresh produce or grabbing a quick lunch on the go. Our tip, head straight for Chez Alain Miam Miam, for an epic sandwich made fresh to order.

Musée National Picasso (5, rue de Thorigny) - The only public collection in the world that takes you on a journey through Picasso’s creative process, from sketchbooks and studies to masterpieces and movies.

Place des Vosges - One of the oldest squares in Paris, the Place des Vosges, is lined with beautiful buildings and arcades housing cafes, restaurants and galleries. In the summer, it fills with sunseekers picnicking on the green lawn that covers the center of the place.

Le Trumilou (84, quai de l’Hôtel de Ville) - If you are on the hunt for an authentic French dining experience, this is your spot. Grab a table on the terrace and enjoy a classic Parisian bistro where the tables are well worn, and the steak fries are served with flair.

Jardin des Plantes (57, rue Cuvier) - Hosting France’s premier botanical gardens, this sweeping park is also the home of the Muséum national d’ histoire naturelle (the National Museum of Natural History). With archives, greenhouses, gardens, a zoo and regular special exhibitions, the Jardin des Plantes is a place to keep coming back to.

The Abbey Bookshop (29, rue de la Parcheminerie) - You’ve probably heard of Shakespeare and Company, but the 5th arrondissement is a hotspot for independent, English-language bookshops. Head to The Abbey Bookshop and get lost in the floor-to-ceiling stacks of new and secondhand books or stop for a cup of tea outside the front door.

L’Avant Comptoir de la Terre and L’Avant Comptoir de la Mer (3, carrefour de l’Odéon) - These twinned restaurants are love letters to pork and seafood respectively. Run by a michelin starred chef, they offer gourmet small plates and an incredible selection of wine.

Jardin du Luxembourg – This sweeping green space is home to the Luxembourg Palace, as well as many fountains, statues, flowerbeds, promenades, and crepe stands. An excellent place for a picnic, a run through the garden’s many paths, or just to relax.

Quai d’Orsay Learning Commons (69, quai d’Orsay) - This newly minted student hub is AUP’s flagship building on the Seine. Discover ten floors of study space and student services with spectacular views over Paris. Seek advice on your career or academic trajectories and explore the library collection in this beautiful new space. A navigation desk is available between the Quai and Combes buildings to help you find what you’re looking for.

Musée Rodin (77, rue de Varenne) - Located in the mansion where Rodin lived, the Musée Rodin features many of the artist’s masterpieces – but the show-stealing activity is undoubtedly a stroll in the beautiful rose garden where you will find The Thinker in deep contemplation.

Grand Palais (3, avenue du Général Eisenhower) - Hop across the Seine from campus, and you’ll find the towering glass curves of the Grand Palais and its smaller companion the Petit Palais. Dating from the early 1900s, these museums have a brilliant program of exhibitions. One of our annual highlights is the Paris Photo that runs at the Grand Palais from November 7–10. This is the largest international art fair dedicated to photography and has over 200 exhibitors. Prepare to spend a long afternoon here if you hope to see even a fraction of what’s on offer!

Parc Monceau (35, boulevard de Courcelles) The perfect place to escape the city for a moment by walking among the 18thcentury follies, waterways and elegant bridges.

Passage Jouffroy - The 9th arrondissement is also home to the city’s traditional covered passages, where glass roofs protected Victorian shoppers from the elements. Perhaps the most charming is Passage Jouffroy, dating back to the 19th century, where you will find a mixture of independent shops and cafes.

Galeries Lafayette (40, boulevard Hausmann) - While many people head to the Grands Magasins for their luxury fashion needs, the rooftops of these upscale department stores are also the perfect place to take in a panoramic view of the city. Both Galeries Lafayette and Printemps offer dining and drinks on a rooftop terrace with a view.

Canal Saint-Martin - The famed Canal Saint Martin is a 4.5km waterway that was once an artery for commercial traffic. Although it straddles multiple neighborhoods, the stretch you’ll find in the 10th is the perfect choice for whiling away an afternoon on the waterside or finding your new favorite bar to meet friends after class. Our insider tip would be to visit Pink Flamingo Pizza, where you can order to go and sit canal-side awaiting your delivery with a pink balloon to mark the spot. Pink Flaming

Le Comptoir Général (80, quai de Jemmapes) - An eclectic, offbeat venue celebrating Franco-African culture with drinks, food and music. Come for a fun evening, then return for an affordable brunch and a spot of thrift shopping.

Atelier des Lumières (38, rue Saint-Maur) - The first digital art center to feature 120 video-projectors for immersive exhibitions. Van Gogh - The Starry Night runs until December 31, 2019, offering you the chance to retrace the life and works of the painter innovatively.

Rue de Charonne - Running from Bastille to Père Lachaise, stroll down this street for quirky, independent boutiques and up-and-coming names on the French fashion scene.

Promenade Plantée (1, coulée verte René Dumont) - Created in 1988, the Promenade Plantée or La Coulée Verte is Paris’s High Line with 4.5km of green walking and cycling routes built along a former railway line. The journey starts near the Opéra Bastille at the crossroads of rue de Lyon and avenue Daumesnil. Follow it to the end, and you’ll arrive at the entrance to the Bois de Vincennes, but there are plenty of access points along the path so you can walk for as long (or as little) as you’d like.

Bois de Vincennes (1, avenue de Paris) - One of the city’s green lungs, the Bois de Vincennes is excellent for relaxing, exploring or playing (18-hole mini-golf and ping pong tables are available). The Chateau de Vincennes is the park’s most notable monument and the only fortified castle near Paris. Open daily, this former hunting lodge is free for all EU citizens under 26.

Quartier Asiatique or Triangle de Choisy (Avenue de Choisy) - The most important commercial and cultural center for the Asian community in Paris, this neighborhood annually hosts the city’s main Chinese New Year celebrations with a parade that is truly not to be missed. All year round, enjoy a plethora of top-quality restaurants representing Chinese, Vietnamese, Laotian, Cambodian, Malaysian, Japanese, Korean and Indian cuisines. We suggest trying out Le Sarawan – a must if you love spicy foods; if not, don’t be deterred – the friendly staff are happy to recommend dishes to suit your taste. Le Sarawan | 111-113, avenue d’Ivry.

Piscine de la Butte aux Cailles (5, place Paul Verlaine) With a high-vaulted roof supported by concrete arches, this art-nouveau pool is a picturesque place to take a dip. The facility has no less than three pools (33-meter, 25-meter and 12-meter) so you can push yourself or just enjoy the view.

The Catacombs of Paris (1, avenue du Colonel Henri Rol-Tanguy) - Go beneath the street to the underground ossuaries, which hold the remains of more than six million people. It’s a good idea to reserve a quick-access ticket ahead of time to avoid the long lines.

Marché aux Puces de Vanves (14, avenue Georges Lafenestre) - This vast outdoor market offers a variety of antiques, furniture, bric-a-brac, jewelry and vintage clothing every Saturday and Sunday from 07:00 to 13:00. Get there early if you’re looking for something particular – the stalls can get pretty busy!

La Javelle (Port de Javel Bas) - A local secret, this outdoor deck terrace by the river boasts live music, food trucks and a casual atmosphere – and it’s often tourist-free! There are some great evenings planned, so be sure to check the website or Facebook page for upcoming events.

Songsan (20, rue Marmontel) - An authentic Korean restaurant offering delicious dishes at reasonable prices. Some would say the best in Paris – but we’ll let you decide for yourself!

Maison de Balzac (47, rue Raynouard) - In the heart of the old Passy village, the Maison de Balzac is an unassuming spot offering exhibitions about the writer and his family, including a display of original editions, manuscripts and illustrations. The tiled library is worth the trip alone, and entrance is free.

Brasserie Auteuil 78 , (rue d’Auteuil) - For a more upscale choice, reserve a table overlooking the trees at the Brasserie Auteuil. Situated on the edge of the Bois de Boulogne, this restaurant is housed in the old Auteuil train station and offers delicious Italian fare.

Batignolles - This village-like district is known for exciting shops and bistros and proves unfailingly popular with the artistic crowd. Leafy and quiet, the neighborhood stands apart from nearby Montmartre and Pigalle and is a burgeoning spot for laidback nightlife and inventive cuisine.

Pastelaria Belem (47, rue Boursault) -  Popular with the Portuguese community in Paris, this charming spot has a handful of marble tables and stunning azulejo tiles on the walls. Grab a chair and order a pasteis de nata (a vanilla custard tart) and a coffee to feel, almost, transported to Lisbon.

Cassiopée Café (21, rue Custine) - A specialty coffee spot with a library of books, vegetarian and vegan treats, walls that function as a gallery space for local talent, and just the best barista in the universe.

Bululu Arepera (20, rue de la Fontaine du But) -  A Venezuelan spot with reasonably priced arepas (sandwiches on corn flour bread) and imaginative, fresh cocktails. It is essentially a take-out counter with four tables, so while you may have to wait, the turnover is fast.

Parc des Buttes Chaumont (Avenue Darcel) - One of our favorite green spaces in town, this park is built over a former quarry and features sloping hills overlooking the city where there is always space for a picnic. Within the park, you can also find several great venues for a drink or a meal; our top choice would be Pavillon Puebla, a restaurant in a charming house with an enormous, shaded terrace.

Parc de la Villette (211, avenue Jean Jaurès) - One of the largest concentrations of cultural venues in Paris. You can head here for all kinds of events, concerts, food festivals and open-air film screenings; to stop by the park’s many bars and cinemas; or to visit the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie, the largest science museum in Europe.

Cimetière du Père Lachaise (8, boulevard de Ménilmontant) - The most peaceful spot in Paris. Stroll under the trees in this beautiful cemetery that is the resting place of famous names like Oscar Wilde and Jim Morrison. Maps are available to help you find your way to the most renowned residents.

La Bellevilloise (19–21, rue Boyer) - Once a worker’s cooperative, this venue is now a bar, restaurant, club and exhibition space that hosts regular film and music festivals. If you stop by for Sunday brunch, you’ll be treated to live jazz music – a particularly beloved tradition.

Texas MS 150 Bike Tour Returns To Aggieland

Texas A&M University will once again serve as the finish line for thousands of cyclists riding in the Texas MS 150 when the 40th annual charity bike tour concludes Sunday on Houston Street between Kyle Field and Aggie Park.

The two-day event benefiting people with multiple sclerosis — a condition that damages the body’s nervous system by eroding the protective coating of nerves — will run April 27-28, with a variety of routes beginning in Houston and Austin before converging in La Grange and again in College Station. Texas A&M Transportation Services is advising drivers to anticipate multiple road closures and potential delays beginning early Sunday as the riders make their way through campus.

A section of Lamar Street starting at the bell tower will be closed to drivers throughout the day, while Houston Street will remain closed from George Bush Drive to Joe Routt Boulevard. Riders will make their way down Olsen Boulevard and Old Main Drive before passing the Memorial Student Center and Kyle Field on their way to the finish line. A map of the route through campus, as well as accompanying road closure and parking information, can be found at transport.tamu.edu/ms150 .

Visitors planning to watch the participants finish are invited to park in one of the three nearby garages: Gene Stallings Boulevard Garage and University Center Garage will both charge a flat $10 entry fee, while West Campus Garage charges an hourly visitor rate. Additional parking information is available on Transportation Services’ event parking page .

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Bike MS, which encompasses the Texas MS 150 and a variety of other charity rides across the country, traces its roots to 1980, when the first MS 150 was held in Minnesota. Today, it is the largest fundraising cycling series in the world. Participants in this year’s Texas MS 150 have already raised nearly $7 million to fight multiple sclerosis, with an overall fundraising goal of $9.425 million. More information about the Texas MS 150 and Bike MS is available at events.nationalmssociety.org .
