¿Te imaginas bañarte con leones marinos o estar a escasos metros de una jirafa o chimpancé? Te desvelamos que puedes hacerlo realidad en Río Safari , un parque de animales entre Elche y Santa Pola .

Un enclave privilegiado a escasos 4 kilométros de la playa y con un toque tropical, por sus más de 4.500 palmeras . El parque alberga más de 100 especies diferentes de animales , entre las que podemos encontrar leones blancos, orangutanes de Borneo, jirafas de Angola, chimpancés, leones pardos, tigres de bengala o leones marinos.

El reciento está dividido en varias áreas para su visita: Sabana africana, Cueva de los reptiles, Isla de los chimpancés, Santuario del orangután, Entorno australiano, Reino de los leones, Aviario y Granja Educativa. Además de ver los distintos animales, también encontrarás exhibiciones, circuito de karts y zona infantil .

Si quieres vivir una experiencia única, Río Safari Elche ofrece la posibilidad de bañarse con leones marinos . Aunque si lo que deseas es darte un refrescón sin estar rodeado de los animales, el recinto cuenta con un parque acuático durante el periodo estival.

ACTIVE AND FUN

It seems that the destiny of the centennial palm grove, made up of about four thousand trees and known as Los Leones or The Lions, in reference to the two sculptures at its entrance, was preordained.

This was the location selected to establish the Rio Safari Elche Park in 1983, by the CV 865 road which links Elche, which is nine kilometres away, and Santa Pola, just four kilometres away.  

A Hundred Species

Rio Safari Park are specialists in rearing and caring for wild and exotic animals. Sea lions, antelopes, ostriches, bisons, boa constrictors, zebras, chameleons, cockatoos, chimpanzees, crows, llamas, jaguars, dromedaries, hippos and giraffes may be found here amongst almost a hundred species and nearly 800 animals.

To enjoy their unique company a guided tour by train may be taken around the park. There are also various shows to enjoy including the sea lions, with the possibility of bathing in their company and the guacamayos.

Rio Safari Elche, through its charitable foundation, has developed a therapeutic programmes involving sea lions, designed for people with disabilities.

Some highlights of the Rio Safari Park are the reptile cave, where the habitats of reptiles and amphibians are recreated, the aviary, the crocodile farm and the chimpanzee island with more than 1,000 square metres of open space, with vines, rocks and hammocks as well as the farm school, with painting, bread baking and recycling workshops. Young children may get to know the little goats and lemurs and have a ride on a pony or dromedary.

In the restaurant it is possible to taste a typical rice dish baked over wood chips. For those who prefer to bring their own food, there is a picnic area and there is also a cafeteria.

In addition there are trampolines, a kart circuit and, in the summer, a swimming pool with slide.

• Adults: 22.50 €.
• Children from 3 to 12 years old: 17 € (proof of age required).
• Special prices for groups of over 20 people with prior reservation): Adults 14 €, Children 12 €.

These prices include: a guided tour by train, a visit to the reptile cave, the aviary, the crocodile farm, the farm school, the animal shows and, in the summer, the swimming pool.

Rio Safari Elche

Rio Safari Elche is a zoo and animal conversation centre located in a palm tree forest near Santa Pola. Opened in 1983, the zoo houses hundreds of wild animals including big cats, great apes, giraffes, camels, parrots, alligators, and many more in enclosures which can be explored on foot or by a special expedition train. Daily shows are also held during the busier months, allowing visitors to get close to some of the animals like lemurs and sea lions.

The amazing animals are not the only reason to visit and enjoy at Rio Safari. The zoo also contains a splash park with water slides (open during the summer season), a go kart track, a ball pit and trampolines as well as restaurants, cafes and picnic areas to relax in. The centre also caters for school groups and children's birthday parties for a truly memorable day out.

Rio Safari Elche - zoo for the whole family

A few kilometers from Alicante on the Costa del Sol in Spain is a zoo where you can see Africa's exotic animals - and some of our common domestic animals.

At the entrance there are shops where you can buy souvenirs from the zoo.

There you also meet the first animals - some cute lemurs - who look at you curiously from the other side of the glass wall.

It is easy to find. There are roads criss-crossing and signs showing where you must go to find the various animals.

There is also a cafe where you can buy some food and drink.

The animals have relatively good space and many of them have been given an environment that resembles their natural habitat.

There is a good balance between the animals' need for space and activity and the spectators' need to see the animals up close.

The first animals you meet are kangaroos and emus.

Then come dromedaries, giraffes and zebras.

You get to meet the beautiful Jaguar.

And several types of primates, such as the Black-Crested Mangabey which is only found in the Congo.

It is a separate small section for the American alligator.

And of course African lion and Bengal tiger sections.

There are two departments that are only open at special times. One is for ring-tailed lemurs and the other for sea lions. The department for ring-tailed lemurs opens at 12.

In the area of ring-tailed lemurs, you are only allowed to enter limited groups together with a guide who looks after you.

You get close to the animals, but it is important that you do not make contact with them, and that you do the right thing if a curious lemur jumps onto your shoulder.

You will receive training in this before entering. Ring-tailed lemurs are only found in Madagascar. They are endangered due to illegal smuggling of individuals for sale as pets.

What is tragic is that these lemurs depend on being in a herd to survive. If they are taken out of their herd and placed alone with humans, they will die of depression within a few weeks.

The zoo has a program to help the species survive.

The department for sea lions opens at 13. Then there is a show where a male animal and a female animal are displayed in an area with a pool of water surrounded by stands.

A zookeeper talks about how they train the animals to be able to take care of them in a good way.

Using fish as a reward, the zookeeper can get the sea lion to show off its right or left paw, gape open to have its mouth inspected, or perform acrobatic tricks in the pool.

There are also common farm animals there, such as sheep and goats.

At certain times there is a free train that you can join which gives you a tour of the area with some explanation along the way.

The Bornean orangutan is an endangered species that lives mainly in Borneo. Orangutans are the world's largest arboreal apes.

One of the tasks of the zoos is to take care of endangered species, take care of genetic variation and in some cases also contribute to releasing individuals back into the wild.

The red flamingos are a beautiful sight as they march in a row.

Rio Safari Elche – Animal lover’s paradise

A genuine Eva-day.

Visiting Rio Safari Elche is indeed a genuine Eva-day. A day filled with petting and feeding animals. Normally we feed everything from cats and dogs to birds and lizards on daily basis, but feeding large exotic animals is something extra. And yes, you read it right, we do feed lizards. They are actually very fond of soft cat kibble. Generally, we are both passionate about animals, so a day at Rio Safari Elche  is just amazing. The park is located pretty much in the middle of nowhere, but absolutely worth a visit. 

Preserving wildlife and more.

Rio Safari Elche is actively working with programs towards the preservation of extinct animal species. They also have a fund, that offers children and young people with physical and mental disabilities, to swim with sea lions.

We were really touched when we watched such a visit from some mentally disabled children, swimming in the sea lions basin. Their enjoyment of the experience was so wonderful that we ended up getting a little wet in the corners of our eyes.

No more tears

Luckily we didn’t have to shed any more tears for the rest of the day. Instead, we strolled around the park, relaxing in the sun, just as the animals did.

It is so nice to visit an animal park, where the animals have such good conditions. Large enclosures and lots of housing and shade. Something that was clearly reflected by the curiosity of the animals. Some of the animals obviously had free entrance to the whole park. At least it seemed so when we met at goat who had left its enclosure, to visit the potbelly who had some super delicious hay. 

We also came close to lemurs, emus, and monkeys, (who knew exactly how to beg for peanuts). Especially the lemurs were super cute. The zookeeper told us not to touch them because they didn’t like it, but when they approach you themselves it is okay right?

When we came to the giraffe enclosure, we were surprised, how close we could get to the beautiful animals. Everywhere else we have been, there have been very tall fences, but in Rio Safari Elche the fence is a much smaller wall. We were looking at a female and her baby when we saw a large male walking towards us. It was really big! All of a sudden he had his head out between us because he had seen we had peanuts. None of us have ever been that close to a giraffe before. Also never fed and petted one! What an experience!

Rio Safari Elche is yet another one of the non-tourist places, we will recommend visiting. The entrance fee is not super expensive, and it is easy to spend a whole day there. 

Besides walking around on your own, there are also several educational shows daily. With eagles, parrots, ferrets, etc. It is pretty exciting to see the eagles flying among the audience until the falconer calls them back to eat a mouse.

Don’t miss out on Rio Safari Elche. One of the best animal parks, we have ever visited.

When I wrote Elche in that search box I was directed to the right page with all your beautiful animal photos. Visiting that park would be a Chris day too 😉

We actually went back a second time, because we liked the park so much. And will not say no to visit it again. If you ever go to Gran Canaria, we can also recommend Cocodrilo Park there. It’s a park for rescued and seized animals (smugglers in airports etc) and it’s also amazing. We just love animals.

Río Safari Elche ofrece el mejor plan para disfrutar de un día diferente con amigos y familia en esta Semana Santa. Abierto todos los días, propone un recorrido entre naturaleza y unas cien especies de animales donde la proximidad con la fauna está presente en toda la visita. Así se aprecia en sus modernas instalaciones y en las actividades programadas como la visita guiada en tren o la exhibición de leones marinos. 

El público puede conocer más de cerca los programas de conservación a través de charlas y encuentros con animales que están incluidos en la visita. La jirafa Dátil, los mangabeys Dowo y Odette, o la orangután Membelai son algunos de los ejemplares que han nacido recientemente en el parque bajo criterios conservacionistas. El parque también acoge leopardos, leones blancos, jaguares o ualabíes, entre otras especies.

La jornada de entretenimiento se completa con un circuito de karting para niños y adultos, un área infantil de hinchables y un parque multiaventura. 

La oferta gastronómica también está muy cuidada en Río Safari, pues cada día los visitantes encuentran en el menú rica paella y otros platos típicos del Mediterráneo, sin olvidar una carta especial para los niños.

NUESTRA RAZÓN DE SER

La Fundación Río Safari Elche surge como una obra social inspirada en nuestro profundo compromiso con la sociedad. A lo largo de los años, hemos sido testigos de cómo los animales tienen el poder de transformarse en herramientas terapéuticas activas, capaces de abordar diversas problemáticas y colectivos. Desde nuestros humildes comienzos en 2006, cuando realizamos nuestra primera intervención como estudio piloto, hemos observado cómo esta aproximación terapéutica es efectiva y enriquecedora para las personas y las familias que pasan por nuestras instalaciones.

NUESTRO EQUIPO

Curro es un león marino californiano nacido el 15 de junio de 2003, en el Zoo de Vergel. Tiene una amplia experiencia como animal de terapia, empezando junto con Aragón en nuestras intervenciones, encontrándose especialmente cómodo con los niños. Tiene un carácter activo, sociable y afectuoso. Nos sorprende por su gran agilidad, fortaleza, carisma y por el aspecto majestuoso y tamaño alcanzado, ya que ha alcanzado su madurez física llegando a pesar más de 200 kg.

Timón es un león marino californiano que viene de La Reserva de las Guardas de Sevilla y nació en 2013. Con su experiencia y su actitud muy activa , confiamos en que será un gran aliado terapéutico para cualquier persona.

Nerón es un león marino californiano nacido el 15 de junio de 2007. Viene del Zoo de Múnich. Desde 2012, Nerón ha colaborado en intervenciones terapéuticas en nuestras instalaciones. Su característica primordial es su gran agilidad y equilibrio, siendo un experto en la realización de saltos y en el equilibrio a la hora de mantener la pelota mientras nada, ejercicio que le hipnotiza prefiriendo éste a cualquier otro. Tiene preferencia por ejecutar ejercicios donde haya que desplazarse rápido, moverse y saltar.

NUESTRAS INSTALACIONES

La Fundación Río Safari Elche tiene su sede en Río Safari Elche, centro de conservación de especies exóticas con más de 30 años de experiencia, y empresa mecenas de nuestra entidad, de la cual se nutre tanto de sus instalaciones como de la obtención de animales aptos para desarrollar nuestras terapias. Río Safari Elche cuenta con una instalación totalmente adaptada para la realización de las terapias.

– Piscina exterior de medidas: 15 x 20 metros.

– Profundidad: 1,20 m.

– Rampa para el acceso de sillas de ruedas.

– Situado junto a las piscinas-dormitorio de nuestros animales de terapia.

– Vestuario accesible para personas con silla de ruedas junto a la piscina.

La Fundación es pionera en el desarrollo de la introducción del León Marino como animal óptimo para tratamientos terapéuticos, así como el estudio sobre la repercusión producida por este animal como facilitador de la terapia y el estado de bienestar de los animales incluidos en estos programas. Estos excepcionales animales, desde su nacimiento están adaptados al contacto con el ser humano, empezando por sus cuidadores para posteriormente ampliar el contacto a otras personas, siempre desde el cariño y refuerzo positivo, lo que causa en el animal un carácter muy sociable. Desde la FRSE se ha establecido un protocolo de evaluación que permite saber el estado del animal en cada momento de la intervención, siendo su bienestar un objetivo prioritario.

NUESTRO EQUIPO HUMANO

Estas intervenciones son realizadas por  un equipo multidisciplinar  formado por entrenadores de mamíferos marinos, psicólogo, técnico en terapia asistida con animales y veterinario, y con colaboración de fisioterapeutas y terapeuta ocupacional, para asegurar tanto la consecución de los objetivos terapéuticos marcados para el beneficiario, como el respeto y cuidado de los animales de terapia. Además, en los últimos años, FRSE ha ampliado su labor, añadiendo el proyecto “Granja Socializadora” dedicado a menores tutelados por la Administración Pública, donde el trabajo con animales de granja ayuda a la consecución de objetivos marcados previamente.

FRSE, así como su entidad mecenas,  Río Safari Elche , tienen como inquietudes sociales aportar un valor añadido a la sociedad que vaya más allá de la sensibilización y educación en materia medioambiental. Surge entonces la posibilidad de desarrollar acciones en las que los animales se transforman en sujetos activos y herramientas válidas para la intervención terapéutica con multitud de colectivos y ante diversas problemáticas, observado y comprobado desde nuestros inicios, en 2006 con nuestra primera intervención a modo de estudio piloto, como nuestro propósito era el correcto, encontrando gran cantidad de beneficios y mejoras en las personas y familias que han pasado por nuestras instalaciones.

Actualmente,  la Terapia Asistida con animales ha demostrado ser una excelente forma de intervención, y animales como el perro, el caballo y otros animales domésticos han demostrado ser herramientas terapéuticas válidas. Nuestra entidad, se plantea como uno de sus objetivos fundacionales, la introducción de animales exóticos en la intervención, ofreciendo un mayor número de posibilidades a la hora de realizar tratamientos y demostrando que pueden ser igualmente válidos. Con la práctica hemos observado que el león marino proporciona una motivación añadida debido a la poca habituación de los participantes a esta especie.
