Full Review

If you’re looking for a place to store all of your travel documents—boarding passes, passport(s), cash, cards, SIM cards, visas, whatever—then the Bellroy Travel Folio should be on your radar.

Bellroy Travel Folio Flat Lay

This nifty travel wallet is full of features. And—unlike some of its competition on the market—these features are handy when you need them and out of your way when you don’t. What kind of features, you ask? Read on and find out.

Materials & Aesthetic

We’re digging the simple, sophisticated look of the Bellroy Travel Folio. At the time of this review, it’s available in four colorways—Navy, Black, Caramel, and Tangelo. We’ve been testing the Black, which we think is particularly sleek.

But the Black can blend in with its surroundings on dark surfaces or in your backpack. So if you’re the type of person who may accidentally leave this folio on the table in an airport cafe (you know who you are) or panic and empty your entire backpack looking for it because you’re not 100% you grabbed it that morning (you also know who you are) you may want to opt for a brighter color.

Bellroy Travel Folio Stitching, Zipper And Logo

We love all the small details on this folio. The beautiful stitching along the perimeter, the Bellroy name stamped into the exterior, and the adorable owl logo on the interior—as well as the sleek silver zipper—all enforce its overall classy vibe.

Plus, this folio is made of premium leather. Bellroy’s origin story involves a quest for creating high-end leather products, and the team has only gotten better at it as the company has grown. Bellroy uses leather from gold-rated Leather Working Group tanneries, which ensures the tanning process is done sustainably (as much as possible at present, anyway).

Bellroy Travel Folio Card And Boarding Pass Holder In Essex England

This leather is soft and supple. It’s more sensitive to the elements than synthetic materials, but we like this sensitivity. It usually wears in such a way that’s not only beautiful, but unique. Of course, you’ll still want to take care of it so you don’t end up with a water-damaged, scratched-up folio that’s unique in how it’s totally ruined.

Inside the Folio

While we like the sleek exterior of the Bellroy Travel Folio, we’re really loving the interior—where all those aforementioned features come in to play.

Bellroy Travel Folio Passport Sleeve

First up, we have the left side of the folio. This is where you can store your specifically-for-travel documents, including your passport, visas, and boarding documents. The front pocket is for your passport. It works really well, especially if you’re a solo traveler. If you’re traveling with a friend or partner, however, you can’t successfully put two passports here—it’ll be way too tight. And, unlike what’s depicted in Bellroy’s marketing materials, you can’t keep a second passport in the sleeve behind it either. Again, it’ll be too tight and cumbersome to access.

This is obviously not a deal-breaker because this folio isn’t advertised as a great tool for traveling couples, but it would be nice to have a spot to keep two passports together. This folio does fit two passports, but we’ve had to put the second in a different spot (more on this in a second).

Bellroy Travel Folio Card And Boarding Pass Holder Behind The Front Pockets

Behind the passport pocket is a sleeve for whatever random assortment of documents you end up collecting on the road—tickets, boarding passes, and visas most commonly. Now, we haven’t had much success with fitting boarding passes or tickets here. They’re almost always too long unless you fold them a few times (which isn’t a huge deal).

For the most part, visas fit really well. But the size of the visa depends on the country, so we can’t say it’ll always work.

Bellroy Travel Folio Card Holders

On the right side of the wallet, you can stash all your cards (whether they’re of the credit, debit, or business variety). In the front, you have three slots for the cards you access most frequently. Behind that, you have a spare slot for those cards you need only every once and awhile. Bellroy advertises that you can fit up to eight cards total.

Bellroy Travel Folio With Bills

Behind the divider is a large spot for more random documents and any notes (whether they’re of the currency, love, or to-do variety). We’ve actually had more luck folding up cash and sticking it in the spare card slot as it’s easier to see and access. But you make this folio work for you.

Once again, boarding documents don’t fit here super well. You’ll have to fold them. And if you’re the type who prints tickets out at home on a regular-sized piece of paper, you’ll have to fold it into eighths to make it work. Even folded, it’ll usually be caught in the crease when you close up this folio. Of course, this isn’t a huge deal as long as you’re not creasing it on any barcodes or things of that nature. So, be mindful.

Bellroy Travel Folio With A Passport In The Back Compartment

Behind that, there’s also another large spot for whatever else you’ve got. Bellroy suggests cash, although we’ve used it for that second passport we mentioned earlier.

We really like that you can make this internal organization work for you. The pockets aren’t so-perfectly sized that they’ll only work for exactly what the designers at Bellroy intended—you do you. We also love that every compartment is easy to see and access.

Now, we’re not actually done with the pocket tour just yet.

Bellroy Travel Folio SIM Card Holder

You’ll also find a SIM card pocket, which is super handy while traveling. Beneath it is a tiny slit that holds your ejector pin to help make the SIM card transfer process as seamless as possible. They’re both discrete—there if you need it, out of the way if you don’t.

Bellroy Travel Folio Included Pen

The same thing can be said for the Bellroy mini-pen that comes with this folio. We’re huge fans of this pen and love the fact that it’s included. We always keep pens on us while traveling, but they’re not always the sleekest to carry. This pen—which is tiny—stays tucked away in the small pen slot in the middle of this folio until you reach for it. We actually tend to forget about it until we need it, which happens often when you’re zipping around the world.

The not-so-glamorous or Instagramable truth of traveling is that it tends to involve paperwork. A lot of paperwork. So having a pen with you comes in handy.

Of course, this pen is not ideal for novel writing. It has nothing on fancy pens with magical ink , but it’s great for scribbling down our answers on customs forms and whatnot. However, if you’re a pen snob (no judgment—some members of our team are too!) Bellroy claims you can stick other pens in this slot. Which is true…sort of. You just have to use a pen slim enough to fit.

Either way, we like that there’s a pen spot that doesn’t add any extra bulk.

Features & Usage

The Bellroy Travel Folio is decently small for a travel wallet (just look at the Aer Travel Wallet or the Fjallraven Passport Pocket ) which is both good and bad, although we tend to see it as mostly a positive. It’ll fit in most quick-grab backpack pockets, which is always a huge plus. But it won’t seamlessly fit boarding documents unless you fold them. We’re okay sacrificing the latter for the former, but there are bigger travel folios out there if you’d prefer crease-free documents.

Bellroy Travel Folio In The Cabinzero Hip Pack 2L

This folio is also RFID-blocking, which is certainly a feature. While there are no hard numbers on how many RFID financial crimes are committed (it can be hard to determine how credit card information is stolen once it’s already been stolen), not having to worry about the possibility always provides peace of mind. You also won’t have to worry about your passport information or hotel key card information being collected by criminals with an RFID reader.

Durability & Testing

We’ve been testing the Bellroy Travel Folio for two months now in multiple U.S. states and around the U.K.—and it’s been a great travel companion.

The easiest way to have a tough time traveling is to get disorganized. Nobody wants to scramble to find that boarding pass you-just-know-is-in-your-backpack-somewhere—but seriously where is it!?—as the boarding line builds behind you (turns out it was in your back pocket the whole time).

Keeping your documents, cash, cards, and SIM card in one spot is super handy. And the usefulness of having a tiny pen to fill out paperwork as you exit and enter a country, or rent a car, or anything else on the go, can’t be understated.

Bellroy Travel Folio Leather After Testing

And it’s held up well so far. Although a few small scratches have marred the leather exterior, it’s not in a bad or super-noticeable way—you have to know they’re there to see them—but still, something to note.

Usage Timeline

Condition: Excellent

  • Lots of internal organization.
  • We’re digging that we can use this to keep all of our travel documents, cards, and cash in one place.
  • Also includes a micro pen, which is super handy.

Everything still looks great!

Condition: Good

We’ve noticed a few small scratches on the exterior.

LET’S GO! Bellroy Passport Travel Folio and Travel Wallet REVIEW

(if you want to see all the features and how many cards and cash it can hold, please watch the video )

It is time to get back into traveling. Do you really need a passport wallet? Bellroy calls their offerings the Travel Folio and Travel Wallet.

The Travel Folio comes in a typical Bellroy pack with a little tag on the bottom, and inside is a single wallet to look at. We have it in the caramel color, but it also comes in obsidian, which is really black, and ocean. Since this is a folio, it has a zipper opening and it has a few pieces of propaganda, example passport, and it comes with an extra refill for the pen, which is a twist micro pen that I kind of like. Pens are required as part of any kind of passport wealth you get. Bellroy is always very good at giving some instructions on how your wallets work. They use different zippers with actually a higher grade than YKK on some of their products. The zipper is fairly large and is not meant to go into your back pocket for sure. This Folio provides various different pockets and feels really good, but of course, we are always dealing with normal type sewing with Bellroy, which is just on the edge of not acceptable, but they tend to make it okay considering the reinforcements that we get in certain areas that will have a lot of wear and tear. You might remember the Bellroy Passport Sleeve , which I thought was brilliant and wish it was still available.

The Travel Wallet comes with the pen as well, which was slightly hard to get out. I also got this in the caramel color, and I chose these colors rather than dark ones so you guys can have a better view of these wallets. This one acts more like a bifold wallet, and actually has a lot of characteristics of the Bellroy Hide and Seek wallet , which is something implemented in a lot of Bellroy products. The wallet’s construction is rolled and has butted sewing together. As mentioned, the sewing is okay and does take care of stress points where you would expect most of the wear and tear. Bellroy offers a three-year warranty against defects or workmanship when under normal use. It is crazy that, with all the technology we have in the world, at least industrialized nations cannot get this into your phone yet.

These are both designed in Australia and made in India. It always rubs me the wrong way as Bellroy never prints in their packaging where their products are made. They always print them in some obscure place in the product itself. Bellroy leathers are premium and I keep looking for full-grain vegetable-tanned or any other rating of the leather but cannot find it anywhere. Bellroy seems to be a wee bit more concerned about the process of making the leather, the fact they use the leather working group, gold-rated tanners, et cetera, than the final quality of leather, which seems to be a lot of hand-waving to me. The price for the travel Folio is $159 and the travel wallet is $139.

As you travel, you will likely carry these in some sort of sling pouch, backpack, or coat pocket, therefore, the size needs to only be reasonable. It does not have to be something you put in your front or rear pocket. Every passport wallet should provide a pen, that is the biggest issue, if you do not have one, then I suggest you get one to include because that is what you use on every international flight.

So should you use a passport wallet or a travel wallet?

As with most things, it depends, but here is my gauge, if you are concerned about protecting your passport from wear and tear, get a simple sleeve that hopefully can accommodate a small pen. If you tend to want to organize your travel all into one place, then determine how much you want to pull together and size your travel wallet accordingly.

Travel companies, and especially wallet companies, romanticize putting everything into a single wallet, but I would really caution against that due to theft. Although the potential of theft largely depends on where you go, you should be sorting out your critical items like passports or copies of your passports from credit cards, cash, other IDs, et cetera, into separate physical places. Keeping them all in one place is a risk that I just do not frankly take.

The final score for the Travel Folio is four for quality, two for price because it is really expensive in my mind, features are good and score a four, usability scores four, and perception scores four, which gives the Travel Folio a final score of 3.6 out 5 .

The Travel Wallet scores four for quality, two for the price, it is still expensive on this end, features score a four because it has quite a few things and you can match this up with a hide and seek. Usability scores a three because I believe it is just not as easy to use, it is just a one big honking wallet. With four for perception, the Travel Wallet gets a final score of 3.4 out of 5 .

Bellroy is one of my favorite accessory brands, and I'm not alone. It's been a top choice on Insider Reviews since the shopping advice vertical was launched in 2014.

We've been obsessed with the brand for a while, to the point that we've written about them a number of times — we've lost count — and tested most of its products . Several Bellroy wallets have made their way into our guide for the best men's wallets .

Founded in 2010, Bellroy has expanded from wallets to backpacks, briefcases , phone cases , and more, and has increased its distribution around the world.

Given this expansion, the Insider Reviews team thought it was high time to make sure that Bellroy's quality has held over the years. Some of us are still using our original wallets from earlier this decade, but are the company's products still up to par?

In a word, yes. We're still tremendously impressed by Bellroy's designs, attention to detail, choice of material, and manufacturing quality. We took a look at a few of the brand's products; keep reading to see exactly what we thought about each of them.

Many different wallets use RFID-blocking technology, but the Bellroy Apex Sleeve is our favorite choice because of the security it provides. The Apex Sleeve is made from molded leather, so it holds its shape. It also has a magnetic clasp, so the full perimeter of the wallet is sealed. The RFID-blocking technology makes this wallet secure, but the molded leather and strong magnetic clasp make it feel even more impenetrable. You won't ever have to worry about the contents of your wallet accidentally falling out.  — Amir Ismael, style editor, Insider Reviews

This wallet is a workhorse that lasts a long time. I used the Slim Sleeve for four years, and after putting it through some extensive abuse, it was finally time to say goodbye and replace it with a new one. The wallet is the perfect size to fit in my front pocket and carry all the cards and cash I need. It accommodates pounds and Euros pretty well, too, so it's also a great travel companion. I'm glad to see that Bellroy still has the same great leather and sturdy stitching.  —Breton Fischetti, former VP of Insider Reviews

I've used the Slim Sleeve ($79) as my primary wallet for a few years now, and it's held up impressively well. Bellroy has since developed "Premium Editions" of a few of its products, so I figured it couldn't hurt to compare the "PE" Slim Sleeve to the original.

Like the original Slim Sleeve, the Premium Edition is a well-designed, clever wallet, that makes the most of its small footprint to hold cash and 4–12 cards, but still fit comfortably in a front pocket. The leather is definitely an upgrade, with enhanced details. It would make a great gift for a guy's birthday, or something like a graduation or Father's Day. That said, the original edition is still excellent, and at $60 less expensive, it's probably a better option for most people. — David Slotnick, former senior transportation reporter

This tote bag feels virtually indestructible and has saved me on countless crappy-weather commutes. The laptop sleeve is a little tight with the case I have on my 13-inch laptop, but it still fits. There are clever internal and external pockets that make it easy to find and reach the little stuff that tends to float around my bag, including a pop-out pocket that I can put a water bottle or pair of flats into easily. But what I love most is that there's a zippered top to protect my stuff from inclement weather, and the nylon outer doesn't stay wet for long. —Sally Kaplan, executive editor, Insider Reviews

I was so confident that this wallet was all I needed when I traveled to Italy the last time that I left my day-to-day wallet at home. It fits two passports, two boarding passes, cash, four cards, and hotel keys, and I still had room to keep the cute little notebook and pen it came with tucked in. It made getting through all the airport check-in and security processes easier and smoother since I could hold everything that my partner and I would need to hand over all in one place.

For what it's worth, I had gotten a really beautiful (but minimal) passport and ticket holder during the holidays in anticipation of my trip to Italy, but I ended up liking the versatility of this Bellroy travel wallet so much that I don't even know if I'll ever use that passport holder. A small reminder that sometimes function outweighs fashion. — Sally Kaplan, executive editor, Insider Reviews

I treat my phone like a wallet; typically I use a folio-style case, but those can be bulky. Bellroy's 3-card phone case is only slightly larger than a regular case, and I can easily fit a credit card, ID, and MetroCard in it, with room to spare. At first, I was nervous that the trap-door mechanism wasn't as reliable as a folio case, but it's held up great. And I appreciate the added benefit of being able to use it as a kickstand to prop my phone up when needed. — Lauren Lyons Cole, former Director of Personal Finance Insider

I got the Folio Wallet in a bright, burnt orange color called "Tangelo," which was a bold move since I typically stick with neutrals. I wasn't disappointed with my decision and was surprised to see that the bright color still looked sharp enough to take into professional environments. Though the outward appearance of the wallet was certainly a draw, the utility is the true star. The wallet holds up to 16 cards; even when I filled it to the brim, it held its shape and didn't show any signs of bulging that you see in other overly stuffed accessories. The fact that I can carry it in my purse or as a clutch is another big selling point for me. — Megan Foster, former Insider Reviews intern

Bellroy Tech Folio review – Traveling in style with your tech

Bellroy Tech Folio front view

REVIEW – First impressions are everything.  Making a good one can boost your credibility and making a great one can seal the deal.  When you walk into a business meeting you want something at your side that will hold your gear and the tools necessary to cement that impression while simultaneously looking good.  The Bellroy Tech Folio takes aim at that goal, but does it deliver?  Read on to find out…

What is it?

The Bellroy Tech Folio is a zippered case that holds a small(ish) laptop, a tablet, a phone, pens, paper and other necessities for a mobile office lifestyle.  The folio is made from leather and comes in both black and caramel.

How it works

Interior of the Tech Folio

When you open the Tech Folio you are greeted with a laptop compartment on one side and an office compartment on the other.  Bellroy claims that the laptop side can handle up to a MacBook Pro 13 and is padded to protect.  The opposite side has padding as well and can handle a small tablet, a phone, some pens, and maybe a Field Notes-type notebook.

I recently had the opportunity to attend a workshop in Austin, TX, and thought this would be the perfect opportunity to try out the Tech Folio in the real world.  Normally I stuff all my gear into a backpack – plenty of room for everything, but if you have ever been to a crowded workshop, less than optimal for getting around.  If I could get all my gear into the folio, problem solved.

So here is what I carry:

  • Microsoft Surface Pro 7 plus power brick (and it lives up to the term “brick”)
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 (LTE via T-Mobile)
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ (the smallest phone out there – not!)
  • Fisher Space Pen (because I live in Houston and it’s the law)
  • Field Notes Pitch Black (3.5 x 5.5 dot graph style with 48 pages)

Time for the stuff test!

Loaded Tech Folio

All of the items in the case – the important ones, at any rate – are pulled out slightly so you can see they are present.  All items fit snugly in the case.  On the left you can see the Surface Pro 7 with the red Type Cover.  On the right in the back is the Samsung Tab S6 and up front the Note 10+.  Behind the tablet is the Field Notes book (put there to give a little extra padding to the tablet).  Missing at the moment is the Space and Surface pens, but they go very nicely in the slot above the phone.

When loaded like this, there is not an obvious spot for the power brick.  The folio is large enough, however, that I could put the brick in the middle and just zipper the folio.  This is what the folio looks like when closed and loaded for business:

Bellroy Tech Folio, closed

Pretty slim, right?  For reference, here is what the folio looks like when empty and closed:

Bellroy Tech Folio, empty and closed

Not much of a difference.  Stuff test: passed.

A couple of warnings, though:

  • First, when you load up this much, the folio (naturally!) becomes heavy.  Without a handle or hooks for a shoulder sling, it can be a little awkward to carry.
  • I don’t know about you, but in the real world, my phone would likely never be in this case.  I would carry that on my person rather than tucked away somewhere hard to get at.
  • This may be a matter of breaking in, but I would hope that someday (soon) when opened the folio will lay flat.  I would love to be able to use the top of the laptop side to be my laptop stand, with all of my other stuff conveniently available just behind.  Right now, though, even loaded the case rests in a V making it hard to use as a portable desk.

In the end, though, is it worth the money?  Depends on your need.  The Tech Folio is really well made and has a casual business elegance to it, but that comes at a price – $339, to be exact.  I will leave it up to you whether this is the right price.  If you are routinely in front of clients (as I am), this is a great investment and one likely to be with you for many years to come.

What I like

  • The Tech Folio is almost TARDIS-like (bigger on the inside than on the outside)
  • It feels and looks very well made, and will likely take a beating and come out looking better for it
  • It’s a mobile office without feeling like you are dragging your real office behind you

What I’d change

  • I’d add obvious business card slots, probably outside the laptop compartment
  • Provide some sort of personalization option (monogram, identity plate) – this is a premium case, so this omission is a little strange

Final Thoughts

The Bellroy Tech Folio is a great mobile office solution.  The price appears a little high, but once you get the folio in your hands, you’ll see why it is priced as it is.  And it is versatile, so I can carry only what I need no matter the occasion (business trip, vacation, or any combination of the two).  If you are looking for a mobile office solution that will give you the tools you need and the style you want, the Bellroy Tech Folio should be at the top of your list.

The Best Travel Wallets: Australian Guide

Anthony

  • September 5, 2023
  • Travel Gear

Travel Wallets are designed to store your passport and other important items like travel cards, ID, money and tickets while travelling. They’ll ensure your passport doesn’t get damaged or lost.

The Best Travel Wallets

Here are my top travel wallet picks that are available in Australia:

Bellroy Travel Folio – My top pick

The Bellroy Travel Wallet

The Bellroy Travel Folio is a beautifully made travel wallet. The 2nd generation of their Travel Folio now includes a zip. This will hold everything securely inside with no risk of anything falling out. However it also features a really handy slip pocket on the outside so you can easily keep your passport and tickets within easy reach at the airport and then put them in the zipper pocket later.

The Bellroy Travel Folio includes a micro pen. This is really handy when going through customs and on the plane when you need to fill out arrival cards. There is even a hidden pocket to securely keep your SIM card, if you’ve swapped it out for a travel sim.

Like most travel wallets, the Bellroy Folio has RFID protection.

Overall I think the Bellroy Travel Wallet is one of the most thoughtfully designed and well made travel wallets I’ve come across. It’s the one I travel with. It’s more expensive than many others, but I think the higher quality construction and thoughtful design is well worth it. It makes a great gift for any traveller!

Amazon Basics Travel Wallet

Amazon Basics Travel Wallet

If you’re after a cheap travel wallet that does the job and also looks pretty good, the Amazon Basics Travel Wallet is a good choice.

This travel wallet has room for 1 passport in a slip pocket as well space for multiple cards and room to slip cash notes into.

The Amazon Basics Travel Wallet is about the size of an Australian Passport so it doesn’t take up a lot of room and is quite thin.

Vulkit Travel Wallet

Vulkit Travel Wallet

The Vulkit Travel Wallet comes in 6 different colours. It has space for a passport, 6 cards, notes and tickets.

While the design of this travel wallet is quite long, it doesn’t feel that big and it’s still very slim.

What to Look for in a Travel Wallet

Most travel wallets have enough room to store a passport alongside some cards. If you want to store your airline tickets in the wallet, I’d recommend going for one of the wallets that feature a longer design.

If you want to carry your’s and your travel companions passport in the one wallet, I’d recommend the Bellroy, which I can confirm carries two passports at once. If you’re just holding onto your own passport the other wallets will suffice.

All the travel wallets that I’ve recommended have RFID protection. While skimming attacks are very rare, it’s a nice addition to know that your credit cards and passport are safe.

Bellroy seems to be a wee bit more concerned about the process of making the leather, the fact they use the leather working group, gold-rated tanners, et cetera, than the final quality of leather, which seems to be a lot of hand-waving to me.
