I would NOT recommend G Adventures. They cater to a younger crowd, often times the accommodations are like hostels and may be uncomfortable for older people. Also, if one has limited mobility, lots of walking and vehicles driving long distances are not adequate for older people.

While the zoo may seem like an attraction mainly for children, it can be incredibly enjoyable for adults and seniors as well. As you walk around and observe the animals, engage the senior in conversation – there’s plenty to talk about when observing such unique wildlife! You could even ask them about when they went to the zoo as a child and any other precious memories they have. Plus, zoos tend to be composed of flat surfaces that are easy to navigate with a wheelchair or stroller. Petting zoos also offer an option for interactive engagement, and the tactile experience of petting soft, furry animals can be fun and relaxing for older seniors.

8. Apple or Berry Picking

If you are looking for unique activities for seniors, try visiting your local orchard! Picking apples and berries requires some physical activity, but it’s usually fairly limited. There are also usually hayrides to give your feet a break. During the fall, pumpkin patches are also a fantastic u-pick choice. Be sure to call ahead and ask about the terrain to see if your senior friend (or you) could easily walk around.  Some orchards are more hilly than others.

U-Pick orchards also tend to be frequented by young families, and may elderly individuals may enjoy watching kids play and run about.

9. Visit an Animal Shelter

Like the positive effect of the sun, spending time with furry animals can reduce stress and depression . If a senior loves cats and dogs, ask the local shelter if there are gentle animals that they could interact with for a while. The animals will love being out of their crates, and the seniors will enjoy cuddles and a possible walk. 

10. Farmer’s Market

A farmer’s market offers many colors, tastes, and smells for a senior to enjoy. Even if you don’t need to buy anything, experiencing the market’s vividness can be exhilarating. 

11. Craft Show

Like the farmer’s market, a craft show is a fun activity that will provide light exercise and plenty to observe for any senior. Plus, looking at all the beautiful handmade objects may inspire older adults to go home and try their hand at some of their own crafts! 

12. Eat Out at an Outdoor Restaurant

Great outings for seniors can be as simple as inviting them to their favorite outdoor restaurant. Still, make sure that the business is accommodating for seniors. 

Research the restaurant’s wheelchair accessibility and the style of seating . If all outdoor tables have wooden or iron chairs, you may need to look for a restaurant with more padded seating. You could also pack cushions in the “go bag” if necessary. Also, be ready to help the senior review the menu and find an option that works with their diet. 

13. Mini-Golf

For a more physical senior outing, take the whole family to play mini-golf with grandma or grandpa. This trip is a great way to get in a little exercise and spend time with the entire family. 

Plus, if your senior friend or relative used to love golf, this is the perfect way for them to practice their skills without so much rigorous activity. Mini golf doesn’t require too much energy or stamina, making it a great alternative to a full round of traditional gold. 

14. Fishing

Another slightly physical activity for seniors is fishing. While they’ll likely spend most of the time sitting, fishing still requires dexterity and casting a line. This peaceful activity is not too strenuous and can be an excellent way for a senior to clear their mind while being in nature. 

15. Boat Ride

If a senior loves water but isn’t up to fishing, a short boat ride could be an excellent compromise. Take them out on a calm lake or pond and talk about their life while enjoying the beautiful scenery. 

Boats can vary in how handicap-friendly they are. Opt for larger, flat-style boats, and be sure to call ahead to ask about the boat’s handicap access options and how rough the waters get on a normal trip.

16. Outdoor Sculpture Park

Sculpture gardens offer quiet, tranquil spaces where a senior can walk around, experience nature, and enjoy the art. Sculpture gardens are especially intriguing for elderly individuals who have a love of the arts.

Be sure to do some light research regarding the terrain (although many sculpture gardens tend to be in fairly flat locations) and try to get some information on the various sculptures’ meaning or artist statements to make the trip even more interesting!

17. Drive-in Movie

One outdoor activity for seniors that requires no strenuous movement is a drive-in movie. Plus, the environment may be reminiscent of their younger days . Don’t forget to pack a sweater, blanket, and plenty of snacks that coincide with the senior’s dietary restrictions. 

Who doesn’t love an exciting game of Bingo? Pack up some seat cushions and join your senior friend at your local Bingo night. The interaction with friends will help counteract any feelings of loneliness. 

19. Church Activities

Many seniors take part in their church’s activities and enjoy friendly fellowship. If they have trouble getting there on their own, accompany them with the handy “go bag.” Getting out and seeing their friends can significantly improve a senior’s health . 

Many churches offer a variety of outdoor and indoor activities, such as knitting, painting, outdoor potlucks, etc.

20. Outdoor Music Performances

Music is a significant part of many people’s lives, so why not take a senior to an outdoor concert? Look for music that they would enjoy, like big band groups, and pack comfy chairs and blankets for the big night.

Golden West Adventure

For a 14 day trip this just flew by. Our guide, Craig, was funny and extremely knowledgeable about the area. He kept everything well organized and on track. The places we visited were amazingly beautiful and have me already planning places I want to revisit and spend more time. The tour bus driver, Jason, was excellent and did a great job navigating a bus through tight city streets. We felt very safe with him driving. California is a truly beautiful state and with this tour you get to see a large portion of it as well as a little Arizona and Las Vegas. This tour is a great value for the money because you get to see so many amazing places.

4 Day Death Valley Yosemite San Francisco from Las Vegas Lodging

The trip was made excellent because of our guide, Chelsea. She took us to unknown spots, was patient, flexible, and a pleasure to be around. The only thing I would take issue with is the lodging at Yellowstone. I understand we are in a dead zone, but the ridiculous amount they wanted to charge for the wi-fi blew us away! It was more than what cruise ships charge! Other than that, we having nothing but rave reviews for the tour and our guide!

4 Day Death Valley Yosemite San Francisco Camping

Yosemite was a dream! Yosemite was amazing! 3rd tour with Bindlestiff. Haley was a fun guide and got us from place to place safely. The campgrounds were great and close to the parks. Having a tour guide makes traveling so much more relaxing. You don't have to stress about planning anything or do the driving. Definitely recommend these tours.

This year I have a senior in high school. When I started this blogging journey, it was to help families travel more before their kids’ grow up and move out . And now I’m here. My son is about to embark on his college journey and move out, at least for a little while. Which is why I needed some ideas for a graduation trip he won’t forget.

I promised each of my children to take them on fun senior trips. I fully believe travel helps us spend quality time together that we don’t get in our day-to-day lives. Travel removes the responsibilities of home life, school, activities, and obligations. And since I’ve focused on travel with teenagers over the last 10 years, many of our past vacations inspired me to create this list.

As a high school senior (who’s also dual-enrolled to earn his Associate’s Degree) there is a lot of stress and pressure of finishing school, choosing a college, moving away from home, meeting new people, and all that those life changes bring. One last hurrah and a trip of a lifetime is not only a way to celebrate this important time in his life, it’s a great way to have family time before his next big step.

As someone deeply passionate about family travel, I’ve been on this blogging journey to help families make the most of their grad trips. The following fun senior trip ideas cover everything from a group graduation vacation, travel with a senior class, or epic trips for high school graduates with friends or family .

Here’s the deal: Research consistently emphasizes the positive impact of well-planned graduation trips, not just on the graduating senior but on the entire family. Families who’ve followed my suggestions have had some incredible journeys.

Graduation Trips on a Budget

High school graduation trips do not have to break the bank. Depending on the kind of trip your teen wants, finding affordable graduation trips in USA and staying on a small budget can still be a lot of fun.

1. New York City

I fully believe New York City not only is the ultimate travel experience today, but it is also well within a budget vacation option. It’s been one of our best graduation trips.

Flights to NYC are usually not too expensive, but they do increase as summer approaches. Book a trip immediately after graduation in late May if possible. Keep an eye on Skyscanner for the best flight prices.

What to do:

Places such as Times Square, Central Park, Statue of Liberty , Wall Street, Trinity Church (where the Hamiltons are buried and as seen on National Treasure), The New York Public Library, and Washington Square Park, are free to visit. Or in the case of the Lady Liberty, very reasonable cost.

These are places that your teen will know from TV and Movies. We have always had a great time seeing our favorite places in person. Hit Bedford and Grove to see the Friends building. Wander through Central Park. Search for filming locations of your favorite media and you’ll come up with a list to visit on your own.

Eating in the big city of New York can also be reasonable as well. Just stay away from the touristy section of Times Square when it comes to dining. Your best option is downtown for Chinatown or Little Italy.

Where to stay:

To make it reasonable, stay outside the city and take the subway in. We’ve found charming VRBOs in Jersey City (which isn’t too far from the Statue of Liberty Ferry and is only about 4 stops into the city.

Camping is another excellent choice for traveling on a budget . Your choice of destination is unlimited. If your grad wants to even try out a solo trip, look to one of the state parks near you. That way your teen gets some independence but isn’t too far away for their first time out on their own.

If you don’t want to go all-in on buying new camping gear , you can also consider one of your state parks with cabin accommodations.

3. Rent a Campervan

When my son and I started tossing around ideas for high school senior trip ideas, the one we landed on was renting a campervan to explore the National Parks in California .

We are renting with Escape Campervans , out of San Francisco. Drivers do have to be at least 21 years of age with a valid driver’s license, so this is not the kind of trip a high school senior could do. However, we found it’s an amazing way to see a lot at a lower cost. Our van rental costs about $300 more than a car rental for the same time period and includes our sleeping and cooking facilities. The only other things we are paying for are food (which we would have to do anyway) and campsites.

Escape Campervans have locations in:

• Salt Lake City
• San Francisco

You can rent round trip or between any of those destinations.

4. South Dakota

At first glance, South Dakota’s Badlands National Park and the Black Hills aren’t necessarily places that jump to mind for a graduation trip , but their rugged and untouched beauty will leave your senior in awe.

While most national parks require at least a few miles of hiking to reach their greatest points of interest, Badlands National Park gives you stunning views almost immediately—like Door Trail or Badlands Loop Road.

Feel as if you’re in an Epic Star Wars or Star Trek adventure with some of the landscapes as well. Notch Trail winds through canyon shelves and ends in dramatic views that will definitely give you the feeling of being on another planet.

Ideas for Graduation trips with Family

If your senior is moving away to college in the fall, this may be the last time you get to take whole family vacations for a while. With college breaks not always lining up with younger kids’ school holidays, it’s the perfect time to do one last big hurrah with the whole gang.

Plus these trips make for amazing travel photos .

5. Walt Disney World

If you haven’t done Disney as a whole family, this may be the time to do it. Not only is Disney better with older kids , in my opinion, it’s the perfect place to celebrate. With so much more attractions geared towards older kids such as Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy, Disney as one of your high school graduation vacation ideas is a fun for the whole family idea.

Walt Disney World is the kind of place where you can spend a few days or a few weeks and still have plenty to do. Don’t sweat trying to do it all, it’s nearly impossible. Pick a few of your must-dos, and enjoy the time together.

I would recommend staying on property in order to use Disney transportation.

Otherwise, consider getting a vacation home with a pool where you can have a day to chill poolside, yet still have all the things you need to snack and feed your hungry family.

Of course, if you’re in the Orlando area and are more thrill seeker fans, you can combine Disney with a trip to Universal. Grab my what not to miss at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter .

If you’re looking for ideas for a graduation trip that gives your senior a chance to bond with his family, then book a cruise .

You and your loved ones can enjoy sailing together while you soak up some Vitamin D on deck. Cruise ships also offer a variety of activities and events like spa treatments, scavenger hunts, dancing, and more—so everyone can find something they enjoy.

7. Alaskan Cruise or Alaska Road Trip

No matter what time of year, there’s never a bad time to visit Alaska—the northernmost U.S. state.

Although it can be expensive to fly, you’ll be able to experience wildlife, pristine landscapes, and exciting Alaskan festivities. This makes it one of the best places for a senior trip.

If you go during winter, you’ll get to see spectacular views of snow-covered mountains and frozen lakes that are sure to make your senior feel warm inside (no pun intended). Not to mention, this is a fantastic way to see the Northern Lights without leaving the country.

Consider either an Alaskan cruise as a bucket list to see incredible glaciers, or explore further inland with a road trip through the National Parks in Alaska.

Alaska was a bucket list item for us and an incredible way to view vistas we don’t see every day. Plus, your teen may be interested in summer employment in Alaska in the future. We met many college kids spending their summers in the Last Frontier.

8. All-Inclusive Graduation Trips

Like a cruise but on land, an all-inclusive resort is a fantastic way to make sure you’re taken care of during your vacation. Instead of paying for each individual part of your trip separately, you pay for it all in one fell swoop.

One of my favorite high school graduation family trip ideas, all-inclusive let you bond, do activities together or on your own, and generally just relax.

And, with options like room service and on-site dining, you can focus on spending time with your family instead of having to go out into town or eat in your hotel room. This can range from luxury Club Med destinations to horseback riding dude ranches.

Some top choices in the US include:

9. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Young adults who want to get away from their everyday lives for a few days will enjoy exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Located on the big island of Hawaii, this popular park offers hiking trails, sightseeing, lava tubes, and much more. Backpacking is allowed at certain sites within park limits. A trip to Kilauea Iki can take visitors through many of these features in one hike, making it one of our favorite graduation trip ideas for young adults.

I would recommend one of the many charming VRBO rentals near the National Park for perfect family seclusion.

Group Graduation Vacation Ideas with Friends

If you’re willing to send your teen off with a group of friends, now’s the perfect time to learn some independence and responsibility. Of course, you may want to read my tips for a graduate here . These ideas for the best senior trips with friends are full of adventure.

10. Road Trips

Who doesn’t love a road trip ? With some careful planning, you can create an unforgettable experience that will be one of your teen’s favorite memories from high school. Whether it’s going to visit colleges or seeing national landmarks, there are so many great graduation trip ideas for teens.

11. National Park Hiking

Take a hike. The nation’s outdoor spaces are vast and beautiful, and they’re within easy reach of most towns. National parks are the best places for a senior trip.

Get your teen a National Parks Pass that they can use all year long and save on entrance fees.

Just because your teen graduated doesn’t mean he or she has to sit inside studying all summer! A hike is a perfect way to get some fresh air and test his or her new sense of responsibility. For bucket list destinations try Yosemite National Park or Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

12. White Water Rafting Grand Canyon

The Colorado River is one of America’s greatest rivers and it has a history steeped in both adventure and danger. Paddle through parts of the Grand Canyon.

They’ll get to see up close stunning views, and spend some quality time with their friends.

For an experience that will bring your teen and her friends closer together, send her off to a music festival. Plus, it’s a great way to stay connected with your child in an age when texting and Snapchat takes precedence over phone calls and weekend visits. And because most music festivals take place at different times of the year, there’s sure to be one she’ll love no matter what time of year it is.

Beach Destinations

If a tropical destination is what your grad has in mind, you don’t need to leave the country. Either the island nation of Puerto Rico or the southernmost spot of Key West are great ideas for a graduation trip.

15. Puerto Rico

No passport is required to get to Puerto Rico. Because it’s a US Territory, you can travel here as you would within the United States. College students can take advantage of cheap flights and warm weather. A four day itinerary in Puerto Rico will hit some of the island’s best spots.

San Juan is home to several historic sites worth exploring. The city also has tons of restaurants that serve up authentic Latin American cuisine.

The island also has plenty of beaches and places to go surfing. You could even do a natural waterslide and rainforest hike .

16. Key West

The southernmost city in Florida, Key West is known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and eclectic nightlife. There’s no shortage of fun here; a visit to Mallory Square and Duval Street will provide you with everything from street performers to food vendors and lounges – just be prepared to see some serious sunburns if you plan on spending your time on the beach.

We’re back in Hawaii, this time to Maui for surf’s up. For a graduation trip you’ll never forget, Maui is one of our top picks. With its warm weather, beautiful beaches, and year-round sunsets, it’s one of Hawaii’s most popular destinations. There are plenty of things to do on your trip here including visiting historic sites like Pearl Harbor and snorkeling in Makena. There are also opportunities for surfing, hiking, and exploring rainforests.

For those who want to hit some waves while they’re in town, you can choose from several options when it comes to surfing lessons . At Kahului Beach Park (the birthplace of modern surfing), there are instructors available that will teach you how to ride surfboards as well as stand-up paddleboards.

**2024 Note** Maui, due to the fires, may not be ready to welcome visitors yet. Be sure to inquire with locals before booking your trip to ensure you’re not doing more harm than good by traveling there.

18. Tybee Island and Savannah

If you’re looking for remote beaches mixed with old world Southern charm, Tybee Island and Savannah are my choice for your graduation trip with your teens.

First, let’s talk about the beaches of Tybee Island. this is a true hidden gem along the Georgia coastline that offers pristine beaches, sandy shores, and fresh seafood.

Take a leisurely bike ride along the picturesque streets or embark on a kayaking excursion to discover the islands natural beauty.

Savannah, in addition to it’s ornate antebellum architecture, is home to the Savannah College of Art and Design. If your teen is into art, fashion, or film, this school has woven its creative influence throughout the charming city. See a mural in a local business, it’s likely a SCAD student may have worked on it.

Check out the SCAD fashion or film festival put on each year by the school and combine your kids love into a trip they’ll never forget.

Bright Lights Big Cities

If you have culture or movie buffs as kids, some of the bigger cities might be just what they want to experience. We’ve already mentioned what a great place New York City is on a budget. 19. Chicago

I’ve always thought Chicago is a fantastic big city that feels like a small town. It’s midwest charm, history, and architecture offer plenty to see and do.

A trip to Chicago is a must for any comedy fan. Second City, one of comedy’s most famous institutions, is located just north of the Chicago River. Their interactive improv courses are also an awesome way to get your grad laughing. After class, you can grab dinner at any of the many restaurants that surround it—from Korean fried chicken to BBQ pizza and artisan cheeses.

And while you’re in Chicago, baseball fans will love checking out Wrigley Field.

And don’t miss such Chicago food staples as Lou Malnati’s Deep Dish Pizza, and a Chicago-style dog from Portillos.

20. Los Angeles

No matter what you’re into, Los Angeles has it. The entertainment capital of America, LA is a great choice for your grad trip. Be sure to visit Rodeo Drive, Hollywood, and Malibu (the movie stars’ playground). You might even spot a celebrity or two!

21. San Diego

What teen doesn’t dream of an amazing trip to Comic-Con? In San Diego, your soon-to-be grad can bask in geek culture and look forward to a new adventure that his friends will envy—and remember. Make sure you take pictures of him with as many superheroes as possible for bragging rights. If there’s one thing we learned from The Hobbit, it’s that everyone loves Legolas!

22. New Orleans

I love New Orleans. Beyond Bourbon Street, there’s a lot for teens to do in New Orleans .

The birthplace of jazz, this city will give you and your teen a new appreciation for the cultural rich music on dozens of street corners in the French Quarter.

Then there’s the food. If you have a teen that loves to eat, they can explore their likes and dislikes with New Orleans staples such as beignets, gumbo, crawfish, po’boys, muffalettas, and jambalaya, just to name a few.

You can also get an authentic Mardi Gras experience, without the chaos that is Bourbon street the day of. Mardi Gras officially begins on January 6th (Three Kings Day) and there are events from January until Mardi Gras day throughout the city.

I’d recommend staying in the Warehouse District for ease of access to the best spots in the city.

23. Seattle

My daughter’s choice for her graduation trip is Seattle, Washington. She’s a music fan and coffee lover, as well as enjoying nature. This gateway to the Pacific Northwest makes it a perfect destination.

While in Seattle, explore the Pike Place Market , the Museum of Pop Culture, and a trip to the top of the Space Needle.

While many people know that Starbucks arose from Seattle, the Emerald City was some to quite the coffee culture long before Starbucks became a household name. Get your teen ready for late night studying with the Seattle Coffee Culture Tour .

Old Town Orange will not disappoint, with bric-a-brac antique stores tucked neatly between cozy sidewalk restaurants and bubbling fountains. Most of the district’s points of interest are near the central plaza, which has plenty of free street parking.

Smell the Roses Sherman Gardens

Everything from exotic orchids to a California pepper tree is on display. Desert cactus, herbs, and, of course, a fantastic and super-fragrant Rose Garden are lovingly nurtured by the gardeners on staff. The on-site Café Jardin Restaurant offers handmade crepes, freshly baked pastries, and other goodies to make stopping at the gardens worthwhile. Sherman Gardens is easily walkable, and plenty of places to sit and enjoy nature.

Take a Trip on the Surfliner

A trip on the Pacific Surfliner can be as simple as a few miles to San Diego or Santa Barbara. Almost every train station along the route has an exciting attraction within walking distance. Popular stops include Mission San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente Pier, Old Town San Diego, and State Street Santa Barbara. Onboard snack bars and bathrooms make the train convenient for older and younger passengers.

Visit Mission San Juan Capistrano

Mission Capistrano is a good choice for a senior-friendly day trip. Tour buses and almost hourly train service make getting to the mission easy. Explore the mission’s beautiful gardens and historic buildings. In the spring, swallows migrate thousands of miles from their winter homes to San Juan Capistrano. There are plenty of nearby dining and shopping opportunities. If you still have some energy to burn off after the mission, I highly recommend visiting the nearby Los Rios Historic District .

Historic Olvera Street, Downtown Los Angeles

Olvera Street is adjacent to Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.  Olvera Street is a landmark that retains its authentic charm and captures the essence of what LA used to look like years ago. This area of Los Angeles features 27 historic buildings with a traditional Mexican-style plaza, including the Avila Adobe, constructed in 1818, and the former home to Francisco Avila, one of the city’s first mayors. Olvera Street is a popular stop for many tour buses. This trip would be best taken during the week as Olvera Street can get very crowded on weekends and holidays.

Take a Sunday Drive Heritage Valley

State Route 126 connects Santa Clarita to Ventura. The highway follows the banks of the Santa Clara River through Heritage Valley and makes a beautiful place for a Sunday Drive. Plenty of areas of interest include Bennets Honey Farm and the historic town of Santa Paula. So make sure you allow plenty of time to take them all in. Unfortunaltly, the Filmore Railway has been closed for several years and no longer offers train excursions.

President Richard Nixon Library

Take a tour of the original farmhouse where President Nixon was born, just a few steps away from his final resting place. Inside the Library, the main gallery is where you can explore the history and the exhibits. The library features nearly 70 significant exhibitions, including a replica of President Nixon’s Oval Office and an extensive display of Nixon’s historic trip to China. A fantastic garden with a large reflection pool at the Library is ideal for sitting, relaxing, and enjoying the view.

Step Back in Time Graber Olive House

Graber Olive House specializes in tree-ripened olives, a somewhat time-consuming process but a superb way to bring out the best in these green and black beauties. The olives come from the family ranch located in the San Joaquin Valley. Several hundred tons of olives are trucked to the historic Ontario Olive House each year to be canned or processed into olive oil at gift shops and tours. Hours are limited, so check with their website before you go. Also in the area is Logan’s Candy Shop , which has been hand-making candy since 1933 and is well worth a look.

Lunch at Original Farmers Market

Since 1934, a historic landmark has been on the corner of Third and Fairfax. It’s called the Farmers’ Market, and it’s a fascinating place to spend the day. The market stores offer a remarkable selection of fresh fruits, candy, baked goods, homemade ice cream, wines, meats, and poultry. Parking is scarce here, so arriving early and planning a weekday visit is best. Take advantage of your retirement and visit during the week while most people work.

Take a Ride Auto Driving Museum

The Automobile Driving Museum has a remarkable, rotating collection of nearly 150 classic, antique, and historic cars, all with retro color schemes, snazzy hood ornaments, and unique taillights. Still, perhaps its claim to fame is that on Sundays, guests are given a rare opportunity to drive in a piece of history as they are whisked around in one of several pristine classic vintage cars from the museum’s collection. Even if you do not visit on a car ride day, this fun museum is an excellent place to see and learn about vintage vehicles.

Discover Sea Life Birch Aquarium

The Birch Aquarium is located on a hilltop site that provides a panoramic view of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus just off the Pacific Ocean. Birch Aquarium is a mid-size facility with most of the displays indoors. One of the highlights of a trip to the aquarium is a 70,000-gallon kelp tank forest. If children are along on this trip, there is a very popular Tide Pool Plaza where they can touch and learn about the tide-pool animals. There is a bit of a walk from the parking lot to the Aquarium entrance, but once you get there, all the exhibits are on one level.

Casa Romantic San Clemente California

Casa Romantica is perched on a cliff overlooking the San Clemente Pier in South Orange County. This historic home was built in 1927 by the City of San Clemente, Ole Hanson. The 5-acre Casa Romantica estate was one of the first buildings in the new Spanish Village By The Sea. Due to a landslide, most of the garden area is closed, but visitors can still explore the interior rooms of the mansion. There is also a revolving art show and, on select weekends, various events.

Enjoy the Seaside at Seal Beach

Home to the second-longest wooden pier in the United States, Seal Beach blends a rustic old surf town and a modern upscale cultural community. Of course, the main attraction that lures visitors to this quaint seaside town is the beach with its soft sand and sunshine. A trip to Seal Beach would not be complete without a visit to the Red Car Museum aboard Car No. 1734, a restored Pacific Electric Railway car on the corner of Main and Electric downtown.

Bring Home Some Treats Bates Nut Farm

Bates Nut Farm is tucked away in an oak-filled valley near Valley Center, California, and makes a great family day trip. The 100-acre Farm was established in 1921 when Gilbert and Beatrice Bates purchased the property. Today, the Bates Nut Farm offers a wide selection of nuts, dried fruit, candies, plus much more.

Visit The Santa Ana Zoo

If you’re looking for a zoo that’s not too big and requires less walking, the Santa Ana Zoo is just perfect for you. The zoo has many exhibits, some of which could easily fit into a larger zoo. Everglades National Park (Florida)

UniSC's Best Field Trip contest returns

After massive interest last year, the University of the Sunshine Coast is back, offering another chance for senior high school students to join the Best Field Trip in the World .  

Five students in Years 11 or 12 will win a spot alongside world-class scientists on a trip to some of the most stunning and educational places on earth, right here in Queensland.  

The field trip is a four-day adventure in June featuring whale-watching, a trip to the world’s largest sand island, cultural immersion, a premier netball match, joining a rugby league match with a human biomechanics expert, an encounter with robotic dogs, and a chance to join current UniSC students on their outdoor field trip.  

The adventure stretches from Brisbane through the Sunshine Coast and north to the Fraser Coast and K’gari (Fraser Island).  

UniSC Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Helen Bartlett, said the field trip covered three UNESCO Biosphere Reserves , the only place in the world where three sat side-by-side.

“Biospheres are not only ecologically fascinating and beautiful places to conduct study and conservation work, but they are also closely located to places where people live, learn and interact with the landscape,” Professor Bartlett said.

A biosphere reserve is globally recognised as an ‘international site of excellence’ where people live and work sustainably alongside active conservation and sustainable development.

“As a university that places enormous focus on research, campus operation and education that aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, we are fortunate to have access to such a rich network of landscapes, biodiversity, cultural heritage and communities,” she said.

UNESCO lists seven types of ecosystem-specific networks globally, and Queensland’s biospheres encompass five – mangroves, marine coastal and island areas, mountains, tropical forest and wetlands.

They stretch 222 kilometres, from the world’s largest sand island K’gari through coastlines and waterways to the subtropical rainforests and mountains of Noosa and the Sunshine Coast.

“What makes this trip even more special is that winners get to visit these places alongside subject matter experts – they're not just watching a football match, they’re going behind the scenes with a sport exercise scientist to dig deeper and learn more,” Professor Bartlett said.

“This is very true to the student ‘field trip’ experience because as part of nearly every degree offered by UniSC, students complete work-integrated learning alongside leaders in the industry, outside of the classroom.” 

Entrants must submit a 60-second video entry that answers the question: What do you hope to gain from this experience? Entries close Monday 3 June.

The trip will take place Friday 21 to Monday 24 June.

 The graduate visa route should remain as it is key to funding British universities and is "not undermining the quality and integrity" of higher education, a new report has said.

The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) looked at whether the route was being abused and if it was not being "driven more by a desire for immigration" after Home Secretary James Cleverly requested an emergency review in March.

A graduate visa permits overseas students to stay in the UK for up to three years after completing a university course in the UK.

Former immigration minister Robert Jenrick published a report last week calling for the graduate visa to be abolished, claiming it "allowed people to come and work in the gig economy and on very low wages".

University and industry leaders had voiced fears that the route, introduced in 2021, could be axed or curtailed if the report had been negative, with universities reporting a steep drop in international students applying over fears of restrictions being introduced.

But the committee, made up of five university professors and a Home Office representative, said they found "no evidence of widespread abuse" of the graduate route.

"The risks of abuse are relatively low due to the limited number of conditions the route imposes," the report said.

In a dramatic knife-edge vote, MPs have voted that there should be no hiding place for suspected Commons sex pests.

Former prime minister Theresa May led a small group of eight Conservatives voting with Opposition MPs to defy the Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt.

To the fury of many Opposition MPs, Ms Mordaunt wanted MPs accused of serious sex or violent offences to be barred from parliament only when they're charged.

It was officially a free vote. But the vast bulk of MPs voting to delay a ban until a charge were Conservatives, including several cabinet ministers.

That was brave, so close to a general election. 

Surely those MPs who voted against a ban upon arrest will be attacked by their political opponents at the election for being soft on suspected sex pests?

The timing of the vote was perhaps unfortunate, coming amid renewed controversy earlier this week over sex pest Charlie Elphicke, the former Conservative MP who was jailed for sex offences.

At the weekend his ex-wife Natalie, who defected from the Conservatives to Labour last week, was accused of lobbying a former justice secretary, Sir Robert Buckland, on his behalf, an allegation she dismissed as "nonsense".

And despite missing the weekly meeting of the parliamentary Labour Party earlier, Ms Elphicke duly voted with her new colleagues for a ban which would have almost certainly penalised her ex-husband had it been in force.

After the vote, leading supporters of the arrest ban were jubilant and stunned by the closeness of the vote. "Incredible!" Labour's Stella Creasy told Sky News. 

Mr Rees-Mogg, however, condemned the proposal as a "power grab".

It's a historic vote. It doesn't matter how close it was. 

Accusers will argue they're now better protected. 

And MPs who supported the tougher ban argue that it brings the Commons into line with other workplaces.

Well, up to a point. MPs still have many perks and privileges that other employers and employees don't.

And Parliament still has a long way to go before its working practices and grievance procedures are brought fully up to date.

Rishi Sunak has this morning attended a ceremony kicking off commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Allied forces landed on the beaches of northern France on 6 June 1944, and a Torch of Commemoration ceremony has taken place on Whitehall.

A torch was passed from a veteran, to a serving officer, a cadet and a Commonwealth War Graves Commission volunteer to mark the upcoming anniversary.

Rishi Sunak has drawn a key dividing line with Labour by committing to raising defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2030.

Labour has only said it will do so when economic conditions allow, and we asked shadow minister Alison McGovern why not, as the government's pledge is very similar in reality.

She replied: "Our record in government bears out that we invested in defence, because nothing matters more than the security of the nation."

She went on to say that it's "a bit odd" to see criticisms from the government on defence when former Tory defence ministers have said the armed forces had been "hollowed out on their watch".

Ms McGovern also questioned how the government will fund this pledge, given that they also made a "£46bn commitment to get rid of National insurance that is not costed at all".

We pushed the frontbencher on why Labour won't match the government's pledge, given that Sir Keir Starmer has said national security is a top priority for his government.

She replied that Labour will not make pledges that are not costed, citing the effect of Liz Truss's mini-budget on the economy.

"I think everybody would expect [shadow chancellor] Rachel Reeves... to say, well, we will make our plans when we've got access to all of the books, all of the details of Ministry of Defence spending."

As we've been reporting, Sir Keir Starmer is due to meet with trade union bosses later today amid reports he is preparing to water down his proposed package to expand workers' rights - something that has triggered fury ( see post at 8.04 ).

But speaking to Sky News, shadow employment minister Alison McGovern insisted the "New Deal for Working People" is "extremely important" for the party, and for the economy as well.

She pointed to the social care sector, in which most staff are on zero-hours contracts, and argued they do not feel "supported and looked after", which puts people off working in the industry, and "those issues have to be dealt with".

But she added that the "process is ongoing" in terms of finalising the package.

We asked if the Labour Party is still committed to the key principles of the package already set out, and whether the package will be introduced within the first 100 days, as promised.

Ms McGovern replied: "Yes, of course. That's what we set out firstly in 2021."

We've just been speaking with Labour's shadow employment minister, and we started with today's economic data.

It shows that the rate of unemployment rose slightly to 4.3% in the three months to March, and also that wage growth is higher than expected, dashing hopes of an interest rate cut.

Alison McGovern told Sky News that the data overall shows that employment "has not recovered post-pandemic", and unemployment ticking upwards "is a concern".

The problems she identifies is that employment is "plateauing" because "people haven't got enough good choices about the kind of jobs that they can do".

She said: "That's why Labour's plan is two things really: use our Green Prosperity Plan to create more good new jobs, and then reform job centres to help people get those jobs."

Job centres currently have a "tick box culture", she said, and Labour wants to change that so people can be "doing the kinds of jobs that are going to help build us a better future".

An early release prison scheme, used to free up space in jails across England and Wales, is causing "high-risk" offenders to be let out, some of whom are a "risk to children", according to a new report.

The examination of HMP Lewes, by the chief inspector of prisons, found that "safe risk management" is being undermined.

The findings, published on Tuesday, were part of a wide-ranging inspection at the East Sussex prison in February, but some similar problems were highlighted in a parallel report into Chelmsford prison published last week.

The government says that those guilty of serious crimes, such as terrorism or sexual offences, plus those serving sentences of more than four years, are not eligible for early release.

But this inspection at Lewes found an example of a prisoner who had their release date brought forward under the early release scheme despite deeming him a "risk to children" and "having a history of stalking, domestic abuse, and being subject to a restraining order".

Sir Keir Starmer is due to meet with trade union bosses later today amid reports he is preparing to water down his proposed package to expand workers' rights.

Earlier this month, it was reported the party was going to walk back some key pledges in the flagship policy proposal, leading to a backlash from union leaders, notably Unite's Sharon Graham.

The flagship policy, spearheaded by deputy leader Angela Rayner, includes:

• Banning zero-hours contracts;
• Ending fire and rehire (stopping employers sacking staff and rehiring them on worse pay and terms);
• Bringing in employee rights, such as sick pay, parental leave, and protection from unfair dismissal, from day one;
• Rolling back Tory legislation restricting industrial action;
• Making flexible working a right.

As Labour gets closer to power, it has been reported that pressure from business - whom Sir Keir has been courting - could see Labour water down some of those pledges.

But the Labour leader has insisted he has no plans to do that at all.

Unite boss Sharon Graham said the policy is a "non-negotiable", saying: "If Labour do not explicitly recommit to what they have already pledged, namely that the New Deal for Workers will be delivered in full within the first 100 days of office, then a red line will be crossed."

She is thought to be attending the meeting with Sir Keir later today, which has been characterised by Labour as a routine meeting, rather than in response to outrage over reports of the pledge being watered down.

We are expecting the meeting to take place this afternoon, and we will bring you any details as soon as we have them.

Masked men - members of the security forces - have clashed with protesters in Georgia as a political crisis over the country's "foreign agents" bill continues.

The proposed legislation is seen by some as threatening press and civic freedoms and there are concerns it's modelled on laws used by Vladimir Putin in neighbouring Russia.

Huge protests have engulfed the country ahead of the final reading of the bill in Georgia's parliament on Tuesday.

The proposed law would require media and nongovernmental organisations and other nonprofits to register as "pursuing the interests of a foreign power" if they receive more than 20% of funding from abroad ( read more about the law here ).

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has told Sky News the new legislation is due to "Russian interference in Georgia", in a similar way to its interference in Ukraine.

"Putin cannot help but meddle sometimes militarily, sometimes through using influence in other countries in a way which is not good for this world.

"It's not good for freedom or democracy. And so we do condemn that influence and we very much encourage people to resist that influence from Russia."
