If you enjoy contemporary and literary fiction filled with strong main characters, these are some of the best books in the time travel genre. Uncover new releases as well as books on the bestseller lists. Of course, we’ll share a few lesser-known gems too.

In Five Years by Rebecca Serle

In Five Years by Rebecca Serle book cover with sketched city of New York City

Would your life change if you had one seemingly real dream or premonition? What if some key facts were missing but you had no idea? Can we change the future?

One of the best books about time travel and friendship, don’t skip In Five Years . In fact, we read this New York City-based novel in half a day. Have the tissue box ready.

Dannie nails an important job interview and is hoping to get engaged. Of course, this is all a part of her perfect 5-year plan. Dannie has arranged every minute of her life ever since her brother died in a drunk driving accident.

On the night of Dannie’s “scheduled” engagement, she falls asleep only to have a vision of herself 5 years into the future in the arms of another man. Did she just time travel or could this be a dream? When Dannie arrives back in 2020, her life goes back to normal. …That is until she meets the man from her dream.

We were expecting In Five Years to be a time travel romance story; however, this is a different type of love and one of the best books about strong friendships .

Before the coffee gets cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi

Before The Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi book cover with two chairs, blue wallpaper, and cat on the ground

Translated by Geoffrey Trousselot | We just love Japanese literature . One of the most debated time travel books among our readers – you’ll either love it or hate it – Before the coffee gets cold takes place at a cafe in Tokyo, Japan.

Along with coffee, this 140-year-old, back-alley cafe lets visitors travel back in time. Four visitors at the cafe are hoping to time travel to see someone for the last (or first) time. The way each patron views the cafe says a lot about them. The details and repetition are everything.

True to the title, visits may only last as long as it takes for the coffee to grow cold. If they don’t finish their coffee in time, there are ghostly consequences.

Before the coffee gets cold asks, who would you want to see one last time, and what issues you would confront?

Along with the many rules of time travel, these visitors are warned that the present will not change. Would you still travel back knowing this? Can something, anything, still change – even within you?

The story has a drop of humor with a beautiful message. We shed a tear or two. Discover even more terrific and thought-provoking Japanese fantasy novels here .

If you are looking for the most inspiring take on time travel in books, Haig’s The Midnight Library is it. This is one of those profound stories that make you think more deeply . TWs for pet death (early on) and suicide ideation.

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

Imagine if you could see your other possible lives and fix your regrets. Would that path be better? Would these changes make you happier?

Set in Bedford, England, and at a library , Nora answers these questions as she intentionally overdoses on pills. Caught in the Midnight Library – a purgatory of sorts – Nora explores books filled with the ways her life could have turned out. She tries on these alternative lives, pursuing different dreams, marrying different people, and realizing that some parts of her root life were not as they seemed on the surface.

Find hope and simplicity in one of the most authentic and heaviest time travel novels on this list. Haig addresses mental health through a new lens that is both beautiful and moving.

The Two Lives of Lydia Bird by Josie Silver

The Two Lives of Lydia Bird by Josie Silver book cover with silhouette of two people embraced and kissing next to bike with basket

Some of the best time travel books are those with alternate realities, including The Two Lives of Lydia Bird . There are content warnings for prescription pill addiction and more.

Set in England, Lydia and Freddie are planning their marriage when the unthinkable happens. Freddie dies in a car accident on the way to Lydia’s birthday dinner. In a matter of seconds, Lydia’s world falls apart. She isn’t sure how she will survive. When Lydia starts taking magical pink sleeping pills, she enters an alternate universe where Freddie is alive and well.

Caught between her dream world and real life, Lydia must decide if she will give in to her addiction – living in a temporary fantasy world – or give it up completely.

While the repetitive and predictable plot drags a bit – slightly hurting the pacing – the overall story shows emotional growth and the nature of healing after loss. And, as Lydia soon learns via her dreams, no love is perfect. Maybe her future was destined to be different anyway, which is reminiscent of Matt Haig’s The Midnight Library .

An Ocean of Minutes by Thea Lim

An Ocean of Minutes by Thea Lim book cover with blue cloudy like shy and dots in circular pattern

When it comes to time travel books, An Ocean of Minutes is one of the most original takes about time travel’s effects on alternate history.

Polly and Frank are deeply in love in 1981 when a pandemic devastates the planet. By the end of 1981, time travel (invented in this alternate reality in 1993) has been made available.

Because of this invention, individuals can sign on to work for the TimeRaiser corporation in order to escape or save their loved ones in the present. Due to a flaw in the technology, though, they can only transport people for 12 years. This prevents them from stopping the pandemic by just 6 months.

When Frank gets ill, Polly signs up, both agreeing they will meet back up in 1993. Now alone in the future, Polly has to learn to navigate a world she has less than zero preparation for. In this world, she is a time refugee, bonded to TimeRaiser without a physical cent to her name.

Lim uses the time travel mechanic to cleverly explore the subject of immigration, forcing the reader to follow Polly blindly into a world they should know, but don’t. This is what makes An Ocean of Minutes one of the most unique time travel novels on this reading list.

Recursion by Blake Crouch

Recursion by Blake Crouch book cover with infinity symbol and yellow lettering for title on gray cover

Recursion is one of our all-time favorite time travel books to gift to dads who love sci-fi. Can you tell what we gave our dad for Christmas one year?

In Recursion, no one actually physically time travels – well, sort of. Instead, memories become the time-traveling reality.

Detective Barry Sutton is investigating False Memory Syndrome. Neuroscientist Helena Smith might have the answers he needs. The disease drives people crazy – and to their deaths – by causing them to remember entire lives that aren’t theirs. Or are they!?

All goes to heck when the government gets its hands on this mind-blowing technology. Can Barry and Helena stop this endless loop?

Recursion is also a (2019) Goodreads Best Book for Science Fiction.

This Is How You Lose The War by Max Gladstone and Amal El-Mohtar

Best Time Travel Books, This Is How You Lose The War Max Gladstone book cover with red cardinal and blue jay

A Goodreads runner-up for one of the best science fiction novels (of 2019) – and one of the shortest time travel novels on this list – This Is How You Lose The Time War follows two warring time-traveling agents falling in love through a letter exchange.

Red and Blue have nothing in common except that they travel across time and space and are alone. Their growing and forbidden love is punishable by death and their agencies might be onto them.

In a somewhat beautiful yet bizarre story, we watch as Red and Blue slowly fall for each other and confess their love. They engage in playful banter and nicknames. Every shade of red and blue reminds them of each other.

The first half of the novel is a bit abstract. You might wonder what the heck you’ve gotten yourself into. However, once you get your feet planted firmly on the ground of the plot, the story picks up and starts making more sense.

We can’t promise you’ll love or even understand This Is How You Lose The Time War – we aren’t sure we do. However, this is truly one of the most unique sci-fi and LGBTQ+ time travel romance books on this reading list – written by two authors. Also, maybe crack out the dictionary…

How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe by Charles Yu

How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe by Charles Yu book cover with sketched people on red background with gray section with words

How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe is one of the most unusual books about time travel out there.

Our protagonist Charles Yu lives in a world where time travel exists and is readily available to the average person. And yes, he is named after the author, and yes, it is as meta as it sounds; and yes, this is just the beginning of this speculative fiction time travel book.

Charles Yu’s day job is spent repairing time machines for Time Warner Time. But in his free time, he tries to help the people who use time travel to do so safely and to counsel them if things have gone wrong.

It’s no surprise that Charles’ entire life revolves around time travel since his father invented the technology many years ago. And then he disappeared. In fact, Charles is also trying to find out just what happened to his dad, and where – or when – he’s gone.

How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe won’t be for everyone, but it’s one of the best time travel books if you want delightfully meta, fantastically non-linear, and very very weird.

The Vanished Birds by Simon Jimenez

The Vanished Birds by Simon Jimenez book cover with purple, yellow, and red circular swirls

For beautiful, lyrical time travel novels about found family and love, The Vanished Birds is a must-read.

Nia Imani exists outside of time and space. She travels in and out of the world through a pocket of time with her space crew. They emerge to trade or sell goods every eight months. But eight months for them is 15 years for everyone else.

She has lived this way for hundreds of years. Though she has her crew, and there are people she shares connections with sporadically throughout their lives, she is lonely. And although she barely ages, she watches friends and lovers grow old and die.

One such person is Kaeda, who meets Nia for the first time when he is 7. The next time he sees her, he has aged 15 years, while she is only months older. She continues to come every 15 years of his life, always looking the same.

Then one day a mysterious, mute boy falls from the sky into Nia’s life. His name is Ahro, and there’s something extra special about him. Something that could revolutionize space travel forever. And now there might be people after Ahro who won’t love him the way Nia does.

If you love a character-driven book with exquisite prose – and a few time warps – this is one of the best time travel books for you.

Night Watch by Terry Pratchett

Night Watch by Terry Pratchett book cover with illustrated people in purple walking down street with green and yellow hued houses

Night Watch is one of the most fun and thrilling books about time travel. It’s also a bit ridiculous and very very British.

Why can’t policing just be simple? All Sam Vimes wanted to do was capture and arrest a dangerous murderer. But thanks to those damned wizards and their experiments, he and the killer have both been accidentally thrown back in time thirty years.

And to top it off, the man who would have become a mentor to young Sam Vimes in the past has been killed in the process! How’s Vimes going to get this all sorted out?

The City Watch he’s spent years improving is just a bunch of semi-competent volunteers at this point. He’s got no money, no clothes, and no friends. But at least he’s making enemies fast. Can he catch the killer, stop history from not repeating itself, and get home to his family? Oh, and the city’s about to dissolve into civil war. Typical.

Night Watch is perfect if you prefer your time travel books to be fantasy-based.

P.S. There may be mild spoilers for previous books in the Discworld series, but this can be read as a standalone. And if you only ever read one Discworld novel, this is one of the best there is – and so far the only one of the Discworld books with time travel!

The Future of Another Timeline by Annalee Newitz

The Future of Another Timeline by Annalee Newitz book cover with purple, gray, and green lettering for title

The Future of Another Timeline is one of the few time travel books to explore history through a feminist lens.

In 1992, Beth – a high school senior – and her friends Heather, Lizzy, and Soojin attend a riot grrl concert with Heather’s boyfriend Scott. But afterward, one of Scott’s not-so-funny sexist jokes gets out of hand and Lizzy accidentally kills him. Now they’re on the run, and the bodies just keep piling up.

Meanwhile, in 2022, Tess is part of a group of women and non-binary people working together to change history. They have the use of five time devices which only allow them to travel backward and back to the present day – but never forwards.

Beth and Tess come from two wildly different times (1992, and 2022, respectively). But, while Beth is busy making history, Tess is quite literally trying to change it. However, both of them want the same thing: a better world. When their worlds collide, will they be able to save each other – and the world?

The Future of Another Timeline is a time travel fiction celebration of feminism and queerness with lots of sci-fi and punk rock thrown in. This is one of the best time travel novels for those who enjoy stellar women making history .

The Kingdoms by Natasha Pulley

The Kingdoms by Natasha Pulley book cover with ladder like spiral swirl

The Kingdoms is wildly imaginative and sure to enchant fans of time travel books, alternative history stories, and tales about parallel universes.

In 1898 Joe Tournier steps off a train and suddenly can’t remember anything that comes before that moment. The world he now finds himself in is as foreign to him as it is to us: an alternate history/reality where the UK lost the Battle of Trafalgar and is now a French colony.

In this world, the British are kept as slaves. Napoleon is a popular name for pets, and tartan is outlawed. Since Joe arrives on a train from Glasgow speaking English and wearing tartan, there is some speculation he might be from The Saints, a terrorist group based in Edinburgh fighting for freedom.

One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston

One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston book cover with one woman on a pink train and another walking by

From bestselling author, Casey McQuiston of Red, White, & Royal Blue – one of our favorite LGBTQ+ books for new adults – don’t miss the most-talked-about book (from 2021), One Last Stop.

Twenty-three-year-old August is quite the cynic and living in New York City. Up until now, August has jumped schools and towns as often as you change a pair of socks. August has also never been in a serious relationship and wants to find “her person.” August’s life suddenly changes, though, when she meets a beautiful and mysterious woman on the train.

Jane looks a little…out of date… and for good reason; she’s from the 1970s and trapped in the train’s energy. August wants nothing more than to help Jane leave the train, but does that mean leaving her too?

A feel-good, older coming-of-age story, laugh out loud and be utterly dazzled as you follow love across time and space. You’ll cozy (and drink) up in the parties and community surrounding August. One Last Stop is one of the all-time best LGBTQ+ time travel books – and perfect if you enjoy books that take place on trains .

How to Travel with your Best Friend (and have a great time)

As someone who is now so used to travelling on my own (six years and counting), travelling with friends does not come easy to me. A few days or a week? Not a problem. But three weeks straight with one of my besties (Jessie) in Barcelona , Iceland and New York ? Suffice it so say I was a little nervous in the lead up to our trip! Learning how to travel with your best friend is a lesson worth considering before travelling.

If you are also having second thoughts or are feeling a little anxious about spending 24 hours a day with your best friend travelling, then I’ve got some great tips to help make it a really enjoyable time – all tried and tested!

Choose a destination with plenty to see and do

So you’ve got your bestie, you’ve got your passport, but its now time to decide where and what will the two of you get up to on your adventures. When travelling with other people it is always important to make sure that the destination is of interest to the two of you.

Take for example a handful of friends I have travelled with in the past who don’t enjoy museums, art or culture. In my case, I love to immerse myself into history and art, so I wouldn’t choose to visit a destination like Paris if I don’t have a plus one who wants to come and explore the Louvre.

It is also a great head start if you pick a destination with lots to offer both of your interests. Say if you do decide Paris is your destination, then you’ll be spoiled for choice with endless options to keep you busy in such a big, vibrant city. It is hard to have disagreements and butt heads when you’re in a city that offers you so much.

Don’t Be Afraid to take a few hours to yourself

Even though you’re travelling together, it is still okay (and in fact really healthy) to spend some time alone. On our trip through Barcelona, it was important for me to take the occasional run by myself. Or I would even spend some time at a cafe catching up on work.

As much fun as it is to have your plus one with you, keeping up the intense energy can sometimes be quite draining! Don’t forget to listen to how you feel (tired, hungry, etc.) and know when to take some time to do you.

How to travel with your best friend

Choose a destination with plenty of vitamin d to keep your spirits high.

As much as I love winter destinations and layering up with a hot cocoa in hand, sometimes you just need a little Vitamin D to boost your spirits! Travelling through Spring and Summer I always notice my mood is elevated, even more so when travelling with friends. Picking a tropical destination or a taking a trip over the European summer makes it impossible not to have a great time.

Travelling with your Bestie | Tips and Tricks

Keep in Mind Why you Chose them in the First Place!

Don’t forget they’re your bestie for a reason! Spending a lot of time with one other person in often high-stress situations can be a little testing at times, but you’ve just gotta remember why the two of you are there in the first place. While I love solo travel and have had some great adventures on my own the past six years, there’s nothing that can compare with exploring a city or town with a friend in tow, experiencing a new culture together. My favourite part about our trip was the end of day debriefs, discussing all we had achieved that day… just remember you don’t get that when you’re alone!

Over to you – have you ever travelled with a friend and said “never again” at the end of a trip or “Hell yeah!” the whole way through? Sound off in the comments! See more on Instagram.

I loved the way you explained the stuff.

A few snapshots from Island life in Koh Samui 🥹🌴 just shared my blog posts from this trip in Thailand and now craving mango sticky rice pudding, the kindness and hospitality of Thai people and those buffet breakfast spreads (the kinda ones that keep you full til dinner). My stay at @fskohsamui was like something out of a story book. Especially that last photo - that night was one to remember 🫶🏼 #kohsamui #thailand #travel #travelblog #thailandtravel

In the premiere episode, Shelby enlists Barry and Naldo to help create the perfect ambiance at school to ask her crush Cameron to the big dance. When the unexpected spoils her plans, Shelby and Cyd try to use their newfound power to travel back in time to fix everything.

The episode begins with Shelby and Cyd waking up in the morning. Shelby is glad Cyd is staying with her until her parents return from their archaeological dig in Peru.

Cyd and Shelby go to Barry and Naldo's trailer, where a strange ray is duct-taped onto a cannon in the trailer. Naldo tries to activate it because he wants chest hair to shave.

Barry explains the plan Shelby asked Barry to do so Shelby could ask Cameron, her crush, to the dance. Meanwhile, Naldo activates the ray against Barry's agreement and smells barbecuing. Barry sighs and follows Naldo.

As Barry and Naldo exit the trailer, Cyd accidentally opens the time chest. The ray activates and shoots the time beam at the object in the time chest, and deflects onto Cyd and Shelby. Cyd and Shelby check their chests for hair, because of Barry's past statement. They relax because they find they have no chest hair. What they do not realize is that they have gained the ability to time travel when touching.

At school, Shelby drags Cyd from the vending machine and Cyd is angry at Shelby. Shelby and Cyd then hear the fist-pumping music which is Cameron 's favorite and Shelby wants to go ahead but Marci approaches the girls. Cyd distracts Marci and wants vending machine money. Shelby then goes for it but her foot lands on janitor equipment and trips over. Cameron then doesn't see who wrote it and thinks it's still cool. Shelby is mad and Cyd knows that in the future things will be all right.

The girls then think of today which is this morning. Shelby and Cyd are confused and know they time traveled and are freaking out. Shelby and Cyd wonder what is happening and then go to school again and Shelby wants to ask Cameron again. The two agree and once again Marci needs to be distracted. Barry then interrupts and tells Cyd about the hair raising machine. Cyd then lies and tells Barry nothing happened.

Cyd then hits Shelby and Shelby once again gets knocked of at the janitor or supplies. Cyd is then in front of Cameron and Cameron goes to the dance with Cyd instead. Cyd thinks of the future again and Shelby and Cyd travel to the future and now know that they didn't talk to each other after Cameron went with Cyd. Marci tells everything of what happened and Cyd returns the dollar. The girls discover time travel.

Then, Cyd goes to Barry's Lab because she has nowhere else to go. Cyd tells Barry about her emotions and Barry can't help because he can't tell feelings. Naldo then tells Barry that feelings are different and Cyd understands. The boys go to the blast box to test out an invention and Shelby comes in. Shelby tells Cyd some Channing Tatum words and Cyd apologizes to Shelby. The girls go back in time and get back home.

In the past, Cyd wants Shelby to go and ask Cameron but Shelby disagrees and wants to help her best friend decorate their room. The girls then time travel to a future lab. When they travelled out of the lab, Shelby tells Cyd that they have to find a way to avoid it. Bret and Chet then entered the room, telling Chd that they prepared a dance for her. Cyd and Shelby jump forward to the end of the dance, there the twins introduce each other and say "Goodnight!" Shelby says that she and Cyd need to jump back and see what the dance was. With one hug, the girls jump back in order to see how the dance began.

  • This is the most viewed episode of the whole entire series with 3.54 million viewers.
  • This episode could be related to Fight The Future: Part 1 since Janet Smythe seemed to take over the school shortly after. However, since Norm doesn't get a promotion until Cyd & Shelby get him one in Jump to The Future Lab , this timeline is valid at this point in the series.

Best Friend Travel: Why This is Such a Life-Affirming Way to Explore

It might actually be true that I travel more with my best friend than I do with my husband or kids… I can neither confirm or deny this, but I can tell you that traveling with my best friend of 20 years really is an experience I’m thankful for. Kelly B is back on the podcast chatting with me (Rob Taylor) about our friendship, our relationship as non-spousal adults, and the benefits we both gain from taking these trips together.

Yes, people think it’s weird that we travel so much together, but I’ll tell you this: there’s something very life-affirming about having an adventure with somebody you know deeply that ISN’T your spouse and who doesn’t look at you as the other parent or as someone who holds a great deal of daily responsibility in their life.

Best Friend Travel Experiences Podcast Episode

Give a listen and consider what sort of travel you can plan with somebody you’re not married to. The benefits are many, and the adventures awesome.

Check out just a few of the trips my best friend and I have conquered together and you’ll understand some of our stories and interactions a bit better:

  • Big Island of Hawaii
  • Carson City and Lake Tahoe
  • Door County, Wisconsin
  • Maine Road Trip
  • Florida Keys Wildlife Adventures and more

Best Friends Travel Podcast Episode

I enjoy getting to spend time with my best friend, traveling or recording podcast episodes. Kelly and I share our insights on why we travel so well together and why our time apart from our families actually is beneficial to ALL of us.

Stronger Relationships Through Travel

So what is it about traveling together that keeps us doing it again and again? I think the answer is multi-layered, but ultimately, when we’re talking about best friends travel, we’re talking about two people who know each other and individuals before anything else. Traveling with your immediate family or spouse is amazing and very special, but with that comes everything from your life at home. Traveling with a close friend means that you are experiencing the world together as people vs parents or mortgage payers.

Over our many trips together, Kelly and I have learned a lot about how each of us functions when we are only our adult selves and NOT living the role of parent or spouse. We have learned how we communicate, what our hot-button items are, and how to ensure that we each have a special experience wherever we may be. And we each know how to let the other person just BE.

I think one of the best experiences Kelly and I have had together was getting to be in Key West for Pride. Celebrating LGBTQ Pride is so important for many reasons, and being in a place like Key West reminded me why. While there, we enjoyed all the fun and rainbows together, but then we also gave each other the space to celebrate as we each needed. For me that was just being present with my community and soaking it up, and for Kelly it meant getting to hug others and dance and exude joy. We’re very different and we’re great traveling together because of times like this.

Favorite Best Friend Travel Trips

Oh gosh, where to begin. We’ve always made time for traveling together because we know how valuable it is for one another. It’s difficult to pick a favorite best friends trip, so we’ll just highlight what was so special about each.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe – when COVID hit and the world shut down, working with Carson City was the first travel job I’d gotten since February 2020. Kelly was ready to support the project, seeking out outdoors activities and the new concept of social distancing. We got to reconnect while the world was so apart.

Rob Taylor and Friends hiking at Kings Canyon Park Carson City Nevada 2020 1

Palm Beach County and Miami – OMG. I had a work trip get cancelled at the last minute and Kelly already had arrived in Florida. We made the most of it, exploring Palm Beach County and then enjoying Miami’s South Beach together. No plans, just haphazardly wandering around South Florida .

Rob Taylor with SUPs on Beach at Peanut Island Lake Worth West Palm Beach Florida 5

Cross Country Road Trip – I haven’t written about this yet (2023), but when Kelly and her family moved from Lyle, Washington to Rockland, Maine , I got to be a part of it. We drove from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine in five days. We made stops in Yellowstone National Park , Niagara Falls and more.

Rob Taylor and Kelly Roadside Picnic with Bison in Lamar Valley Yellowstone National Park Wyoming 1

Walt Disney World – One of the busiest work trips I’ve ever had, Kelly was the perfect best friend for this travel experience. We visited 17 resort hotels in five days, did all four theme parks, and still had the energy to laugh the whole time. Experiencing Disney World with somebody for the first time was a great reminder to me of how magical it can be.

Taylor Family at Slinky Dog Coaster Toy Story Land Hollywood Studios Disney World 1

Door County, Wisconsin – Neither one of us knew what to expect when we landed in Green Bay, WI but we had an amazing time. We spent four days on this beautiful peninsula seeking out lighthouses and art galleries, drinking cider and eating cheese. It was the best fall trip! Ooh, my favorite moment was when we did a traditional Wisconsin fish boil and we were not at all ready for what happened ( read the article ).

There are so many more adventures together, but these are some of the best. Best friend travel is a unique experience that is very much worth the time and effort to put together. I hope you enjoyed the podcast episode and will keep on listening.

Screen Rant

Disney's best friends whenever: what the cast is doing now.

Best Friends Whenever was Disney’s attempt at a fun time travel show for kids. What has the cast been up to since the show’s cancelation?

The Disney Channel is soon to release a new superhero-themed comedy series,  Villains Of Valley View , which will premiere on June 3, 2022. The network has released several science fiction/fantasy shows in the past couple of years and they tend to be hit or miss.  Best Friends Whenever , a show about two time-traveling friends, was canceled after 31 episodes.

Former Disney Channel child stars have been known to rough up their image once their contract with the Mouse is up. Others stick with Disney for several years afterward. Since its cancellation in 2016, the cast of Best Friends Whenever has gone off to do their own things, with most of them furthering their acting careers, a few expanding their talent to a singing career, and one who is flying under the radar, so far.

Landry Bender: Cyd Ripley

Landry Bender plays Cyd Ripley in Best Friends Whenever . Cyd was raised in a family that barely spent time together. She is often pessimistic and the way she presents herself screams punk rock, from her dark clothes to the picture of a scary clown she wants to put up in her room.

Related: The 10 Best Disney Channel TV Shows, According To Ranker

Landry Bender has continued to act since Best Friends Whenever ended. Most notably, she played Rocki in Fuller House , Sara Herbert in  Looking For Alaska , and Bella Whitmore in  The Republic of Sarah . She has also offered her voice to animated projects such as Milo Murphey’s Law and The Lion Guard . Landry has proudly partnered with Girls Inc. of Los Angeles and she shares a lot of throwback pictures, images of her food, and herself on her social channels.

Lauren Taylor: Shelby Marcus

Lauren Taylor plays Shelby Marcus, Cyd’s best friend who convinces her parents to let Cyd stay with them. Contrary to her friend, Shelby tends to be optimistic. She loves to follow the rules and when she steps out of line, her guilty conscience eats her up.

Lauren Taylor has only been in one thing since the Disney science-fiction show ended. She was Lemon Lamden in Shortcomings , a show that didn’t make it past two episodes. Lauren hasn’t posted on her social channels since June 2020. Even when she was very much in the spotlight, she kept her personal life under wraps so not much is known about what she is doing now. Twelve weeks ago, however, she replied to a comment from a concerned fan on her latest Instagram post stating that she’d be back soon. Hopefully, she’s doing alright and will grace Hollywood with her presence again. Everyone loves a great Hollywood comeback story .

August Kamp: Barry Eisenberg

August Kamp plays Barry Eisenberg, Cyd’s and Shelby’s friend whose invention led to the girls gaining their time travel abilities. Barry has trouble reading social cues and sometimes flies off the handle, but his friends are always there when things get tough.

Related: 15 Times Disney Featured LGBTQ+ Characters In Movies & TV Shows

Since the show, August Kamp has embraced her true self and shared it with the world. Like Barry, August is passionate about tech and AI. She uses her passion to create and post amazing and otherworldly images. August also loves making music and on May 20, she released her latest album titled “she/her mind/body ,” the first of two albums that tell her coming-out story. In addition to music, August continued acting after Best Friends Whenever , her latest projects being All Night in 2018 and No Good Nick in 2019.

Ricky Garcia: Naldo Montoya

Ricky Garcia plays Naldo Montoya, the best friend of, and a stark contrast to, Barry’s kid genius character on the TV show. Naldo is not very smart, but he can keep a cool head. He comes across as an optimistic character who values kindness and loves to have fun.

Ricky Garcia continued to act in several projects after Best Friends Whenever . He’s gone on to play lead roles in Bigger Fatter Liar and Angel . He has also been in Alexa & Katie , Game Shakers , and most recently, Finding Ohana  — a Netflix film. Ricky has been doing some exciting stuff as of late. He announced his engagement to girlfriend, Ally Nadine, in December 2021 and he recently released his latest single “All I Wanna Do.” He’s active on Instagram, sharing pictures of himself and his friends and promoting his upcoming projects.

Benjamin & Matthew Royer: Brett & Chet Marcus

Benjamin Royer plays Brett and Matthew Royer plays Chet in Best Friends Whenever . The real-life twins play TV brothers  and they’re Shelby’s over-the-top younger siblings who are obsessed with Cyd and get into wacky situations.

Benjamin and Matthew appear to be as close as ever. They were both accepted into UCLA and they both recently posted pictures of themselves at Prom with their dates on Instagram. Regarding their acting careers, they continued to work alongside each other after Best Friends Whenever . They both guest-starred in single episodes of The Guest Book , White Famous , and Pickle and Peanut . Benjamin branched out from working with his brother for two projects, landing small roles in Adventure Force 5 and Young Sheldon .

Mary Passeri: Astrid Marcus

Shelby’s mom is played by Mary Passeri. Astrid is kind and understanding and she encourages her children to have confidence and ambition. She allows Cyd to stay with them while her parents are away for work. She also has a secret passion for roller derby that comes to light in season 2.

Since playing Astrid on the Disney show, Mary Passeri has continued to act, guest-starring in several TV shows such as Stumptown , The Kids Are Alright , and Coop And Cami Ask The World . She’s also landed supporting roles in Office Uprising and Malibu Rescue . Passeri doesn’t post much on her social media accounts, but she continues to interact with the Best Friends Whenever cast on Twitter. Most recently, she congratulated the Royer twins on their college acceptances.

Kevin Symons: Norm Marcus

Kevin Symons plays Norm Marcus, Shelby’s father. He works in corporate accounting for a tech company obsessed with the science behind time travel. He often complains about his job and while he is smart with numbers, he tends to miss or misinterpret the chaos going on around him.

Related: 10 Best Villains In Disney Channel Original Movies, Ranked

Kevin Symons seems to enjoy social media, having accounts on Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. His YouTube is dedicated to sharing Cameo videos and fancy cocktail recipes. His most recent project was The Sound of Music at the La Miranda Theatre. He has also continued to act on the screen with roles in Henry Danger , Vice , Black-ish , and This Is Us . Kevin promotes every project he’s in, regardless of the size of his role. He also likes to post video messages as his characters, especially Councilman Dexhart, who he plays on Parks and Recreation .

Bryana Salaz: Princess Daisy

Bryana Salaz plays Daisy, a princess from the 16th century who comes through a time rift in season 2. While she’s a late addition to the show, she was a favorite for young kids. In Daisy’s time, she was held prisoner in a tower and she opts to not go back. Daisy is smart though she doesn’t quite understand metaphors.

Salaz considers herself a “children’s TV graduate.” She shares her various adventures with the world on Instagram and often posts photo dumps with the strangest collection of pictures grouped together. Like most others on this list, Bryana continues to act. She plays Anita in Urban Cowboy , Felice in Age Of Summer, and the titular character in Team Kaylie . She also guest-starred on On My Block , which sparked her next adventure. She is currently filming a spin-off show to On My Block called Freeridge .

Nora Dunn: Janet Smythe

Nora Dunn plays Janet Smythe, an evil scientist obsessed with becoming a time traveler and ruling the world. She’s arrogant and will do whatever it takes to make her evil dream a reality, even if it means taking out two teenage girls.

Out of all the cast in Best Friends Whenever , Nora Dunn has the most acting credits and her itinerary doesn’t seem to have an end. Since her time on the Disney Channel, she has starred and guest-starred in 23 projects, including  Dude , Tag , The Oath , and The Hater . She’s also guest-starred on shows such as The Librarians , 2 Broke Girls , Chicago P.D. , and How To Get Away With Murder .

Best Friend Travel Bucket List: 12 Trips to Take With Your BFF

After years of exploring the world with my best friend, I thought what a great idea it’d be to pull together the best friend bucket list. I wanted to recommend any places that me and my best friend have been on, but also let you know what destinations are on our best friend travel bucket list.

In this post, I have included the places we’ve been and those we’d like to go to. Travelling with Katie is one of my favourite things to do, and despite being in a relationship, I love spending quality time with my best friend, in far-flung corners of the world.

Me and Katie are not new to exploring the world together, having been on countless trips together over the years since we became besties on the first day of University over seven years ago.

Our Best Friend Travel Bucket List has included Dublin for a weekend, spent four months travelling down the coast in New Zealand and Australia, we’ve been to Iceland to visit the waterfalls, took a trip to Malmo for the weekend, spent five days in Switzerland, headed off on a cruise and this year we are hoping to head to Eastern Europe together!

It’s the greatest escape, being out of your element, with your number one by your side.

Travelling with your best friend will bond you in a way nothing else can, while still inspiring and motivating you to gain confidence in your own skin. And don’t worry about taking all of these trips – even just one is sure to cement memories for a lifetime…

Here is the ultimate best friend bucket list…

Best Friend Bucket List

Best Friend Travel Bucket List

Me and Katie ventured to Iceland back in March 2018 and we fell in love with love incredible country. I couldn’t think of anyone else when the trip came up – the idea of a road trip around this wonderful island with my best friend was just up my street.

We spent four wonderful days in Iceland, exploring the south of the island, as well as all the tourist hot spots along the way. In order to help you guys with planning your own trip (after I spent hours and hours researching the best places to go and where to stop) I decided to throw together another of my ’48 Hours’ guides, but this time it was for Iceland. If Denmark wasn’t on your travel radar before, then now’s the perfect time to keep an eye out for deals and plan a last-minute “YOLO” trip with your BFF. Copenhagen is the perfect city for a break with your BFF, as they have lots of things to do, as well as some very hygge cafes, Christmas markets and of course the famous Tivoli Gardens. Read the full post here .

SWITZERLAND

At the end of last year me and my best friend Katie jumped on a plane from London and off on a five day Switzerland adventure exploring some of the countries best cities. I had never been to Switzerland so I was super excited to explore the country, visiting three cities over five days, including Basel, Lucerne and Zurich.

All three cities were amazing and had so much to offer, check out my blog posts on 12 places to visit in Zurich , and  48 Hour Guide to Basel . But for now, here’s my guide to 5 days in Switzerland…

While Switzerland is geographically quite small and people might think they can do a lot in five days in Switzerland. And to be honest, I wouldn’t recommend any less than five days in this magical country, as we felt like we hardly scratched the surface, and next time I visit Switzerland I plan on going to the east of the country to Interlaken and the mountains.

UNITED KINGDOM

We may live in the United Kingdom but that doesn’t stop us exploring our very own country. We love taking a staycation, although often we end up in a bar in a city, we also love the weekends spent relaxing in a country manor.

Who would you rather tour Downton Abbey Highclere Castle or Pride and Prejudice  Chatsworth House  with besides the one who probably watched them all with you? Best spent here at Christmas when the Christmas markets are in full swing up and down the country.

Some go to Dublin for the stunning Georgian architectural and long history, others, like me and my girls visit Dublin for it’s robust pub culture, wonderful museums and good-looking Irish men (joking obviously).  Last year me and the girls went to Dublin for a weekend exploring this wonderful city.

We spent the weekend drinking, walking, eating and drinking some more.  We flew with British Airways, but you can also fly with Aer Lingus, Ryanair and FlyBe to Dublin Airport from the UK. Read the full post from our trip here .

NEW ZEALAND

Before arriving in New Zealand, we had no idea where to start. All we knew was that we had two weeks in New Zealand to explore both the South Island and the north island. We had no idea what we would do, but we knew that two weeks in New Zealand would not be enough time to see this magical country.

But like many others, we only had two weeks annual leave to spare so we booked two weeks in New Zealand made the most of our time to experience this magical country.

New Zealand top the lists of my favourite countries in the world, alongside Sweden and The Netherlands.

And it’s a favourite among tourists too… it’s a country to opposites, calm relaxed bays, alongside bungy jumping into a canyon, weather that varies from hour to hour, and food so indulgent alongside juice bars and health retreats. Make sure you add a holiday to New Zealand to your bucket list now…

I visited Malmo last month with Katie and we loved this quaint city. Located only half an hour from Copenhagen, Malmo functions at a much slower pace, with cafes dotted around the city, boats for hire along the river and wild swimming from the harbour.

We loved everything about this city and especially the emerging food scene – we stopped off for lunch one day at the Instagram famous Avokado, and their food was bloody brilliant. I’d happily spend my weekends in Malmo, eating tasty food, and people watching!

Whether you’re of the  Sex and the City  class or a  Girls  recent graduate, no doubt the Big Apple has shown you some depiction of friendship over the years, either good or bad. It’s time to make it your own – after all, life is best lived first-hand. So grab your real-life best friend and take the city by storm.

With four distinct seasons and many parades and festivals throughout the year, New York City offers a holiday as diverse as its residents. In ‘the city that never sleeps’, tourists can have the best in food and entertainment at their fingertips. The largest city in the U.S. is also one of the world’s most energetic.

From a night in a museum to a street-food festival, this metropolis has it all. I’ve never been to New York but I’ve heard it’s immense – GO GO GO!

When you think about Australia, you think campervan. Well that’s what I did when I was planning my trip down the east coast. It made sense to hire a campervan for some of the way at least, so that you could really get a feel of Australia and see things that being on a bus just doesn’t give you.

Being on the Greyhound bus is great! Free wifi, no-hassle, they drive you and sometimes you can even get a sleeper bus and arrive at your destination however you don’t have freedom.

You can’t however nip to the shop 5km away without a car or go to the zoo 29 km away without jumping on public transport, however with a campervan you can!

So we decided to hire a campervan from Brisbane to Sydney for 10 days with campervan company Travellers’ Autobarn. I had previously clocked the company when trailing through travel websites and in STA Travel, however it wasn’t until I contacted head office and asked for a quote that I was delighted with my choice and decided to go with them.

I was in regular contact with a lady at head office who was amazing and answered all my questions about the hiring of the campervan and the admin side of it as well. Read the full post here .

11 ways travelling with your best friend strengthens your bond

Recently updated on July 5th, 2023 at 11:51 am

Can travelling with your best friend improve your relationship and make you grow closer together? You bet it can.

Recently, we’ve all had to learn the hard way just how precious time with our friends really is, and while Zoom calls and socially distant meet ups are great for now, nothing can beat spending quality time with your bestie. So, how about for next year’s big trip you ask your BFF along? From making new memories to learning more about each other, here are 11 ways travelling with your best friend makes your relationship stronger.

1. You’ll enjoy quality time together

Travelling with your best friend means you are able to spend quality time together . As we all know, life can get in the way of seeing our friends. Whether it’s having kids, working overtime or moving house, we just can’t seem to get a break. That’s why it’s so important to take any opportunity you can to go travelling with a friend, because you never know when you’ll next be able to enjoy that much time together.

2. You’ll have shared memories you can treasure forever

Private jokes, knowing looks and shared secrets – that’s what best friends are for. Travelling together means you’ll be able to make precious memories that no one else will have experienced . Whether it’s laughing till you cry after a few too many Sangrias, or feeling nineteen again when an Italian waiter gives you both a cheeky wink, those are the moments that you’ll share forever.

3. You’ll learn more about each other

When you travel with your best friend you’ll learn their likes and dislikes, what makes them tick and what they are scared of. You’ll see them from a different perspective and discover things you may never have known about them, like the fact they’re fluent in German, or have always wanted to try horseback riding.

4. The trip will be more enjoyable

Ultimately, travelling with your best friend means the trip will be more enjoyable. You’ll have someone to chat to on coach rides , you’ll feel safer together, you’ll never feel lonely and accommodation can be more affordable when shared.

5. You’ll conquer fears together

Often when travelling, we’re confronted with new and challenging situations. But when you’re with your friend, you’ll have the confidence to overcome whatever’s thrown at you . As well as making you feel invincible they’ll always see things differently, helping you solve difficult situations in ways you wouldn’t have thought of.

6. You’ll put your friendship to the test

During those more challenging times your friendship will be put to the test. This is healthy for any relationship. By putting your friendship to the test you’ll quickly learn how much you mean to that person . Best friends don’t flake. So, if that person can’t stick by you when the going gets tough, you’re better off without them.

7. You’ll be more open and honest with each other

Honesty is always the best policy . By being open and honest with your best friend – even when it’s uncomfortable – you’ll be less likely to argue, have a better understanding of how they are feeling and learn what each other wants from the trip. They also won’t be afraid to tell you when you’re acting unreasonably or being difficult, helping you grow as a person.

8. Packing will be a whole lot more fun!

Not sure whether to pack that extra pair of sandals or if you need 12 bottles of sunscreen? No worries, just ask your best friend. Travelling with your best friend means you have someone to reach out to for packing advice . What’s more, you can travel a lot lighter. You can share travel adapters, hair dryers, sun cream and more, freeing up extra space for those all important souvenirs.

9. You’ll both feel more relaxed

Both of you will be able to escape the stresses of day to day life, which will help you feel more relaxed. Studies have shown that taking a trip helps manage stress and negative emotions as we are removed from the source of stress. In fact, when we escape to somewhere near water we become healthier, more creative and even more compassionate towards one another.

10. You’ll both feel a whole lot healthier

A study conducted by the University of Massachusetts found that women who did not travel for at least six years were eight times more likely to have a heart attack than those that did. Holidays help us feel less stressed but also provide opportunities for physical activity. You and your friend are more likely to go walking (easily 10,0000 steps a day), swimming, even hiking, compared to when you’re at home. You’ll both come back feeling energised and rejuvenated.

11. You’ll realise just how much you care about each other

After all the highs and lows of travelling with your best friend – from lost passports to sunset dinners – you’ll know for a fact just how much you care about each other . And as we’ve learnt (the hard way) this year, time with our friends is precious. So, why not make next year’s trip even more special and invite your best friend along?

Educational Value

The show sets out to entertain more than it aims to educate.

Positive Messages

Affirming messages about friendship and overcoming differences. Cyd and Shelby don't always agree, but they value their relationship more than their individual egos, which motivates them to work out the problems that come up. Replaying past events gives them a chance to fix their mistakes, which helps them and sometimes those around them. Even so, consequences rarely reflect reality.

Positive Role Models

Cyd is snarky and at times dismissive of others' feelings, and Shelby can be controlling, but their friendship always prevails. Siblings Bret and Chet compete for Cyd's attention, which usually results in bickering.

Violence & Scariness

Some falls and crashes that are meant to be funny. Brothers' spats often involve hitting and pushing each other.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

Teen boy-girl dynamics with some flirting and the concept of dating. No physical interaction.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Best Friends Whenever is an innocuous Disney comedy about teen friends who travel through recent time revisiting favorite memories and attempting to fix experiences that didn't go as planned. In many cases, the girls disagree, but arguments never last long and their relationship usually winds up stronger for the experience. Twin brothers argue a lot, and sometimes their spats involve hitting and pushing. The story is more entertaining than it is likely to teach your kids much, but the girls' friendship always has something positive to say about overcoming differences.

A really great show

What's the story.

In BEST FRIENDS WHENEVER, an invention mishap gives BFFs Cyd (Landry Bender) and Shelby (Lauren Taylor) the power to travel through time, allowing them to glimpse the future and repeat events with a mere thought of the past. This comes in handy whenever a do-over is in order, but it's not an exact science, so the results are unpredictable at best. As they time-hop at will (and sometimes against their will), their inventor friend Barry (Gus Kamp) attempts to replicate the accidental circumstances that gave the girls their power in the first place.

Is It Any Good?

Best Friends Whenever doesn't break any new ground with its fantasy-based story line, but it does offer pleasant sentiments about the unifying nature of friendship. Shelby and Cyd are polar opposites on paper, but somehow they make their relationship work. As the story develops, we see that there's no force strong enough to unravel it for long, and that's saying something given the complications time travel raises.

Disney's Crash and Bernstein alum Bender will bring some existing fans to this show. Others will enjoy the comical implications of the girls' attempts at fixing past mistakes, which usually wind up complicating the situations even more. Ultimately there's not a lot to be gained by watching, but since it's standard squeaky-clean Disney fare, there's little concern for kids.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about whether Cyd and Shelby's ability to travel through time solves all their problems or raises new ones. Do their attempts to fix past mistakes always make things better? What do they learn from their experiences?

Why are adults mostly absent from this series? Are any of the teenage characters good role models ? If so, why?

Kids: Are you more likely to watch a new show or buy a certain product if a familiar star is involved with it? Do you think that your preferences are influenced by what you see in the media? Is this a good or a bad thing, or is it just a fact of life?

The 32 Best TV Shows About Time Travel

time travel TV shows

Time traveling is a popular topic when it comes to all types of entertainment from books to films. But in recent years time travel has also become a popular theme in TV.

So let’s take a look at this list of the best time traveling TV shows and find out how each of them handles time travel and all the history that comes with it.

Doctor Who, BBC One (1963 – 1989, 2005 – present)

BBC One Doctor Who

When it comes to time traveling and TV, probably the most notable name in this niche is Doctor Who  because this time travel series has been around for 39 seasons and is still going strong.

Hailing from British television channel BBC One, Doctor Who tells the tale of the Time Lord aka The Doctor, and his companions as they travel to different times and try to prevent evil forces from changing history and hurting innocent lives.

Once the Time Lord gets hurt beyond healing, he can transform into a new body and continue saving the world. Hence why at this point 13 (soon to be 14) different actors have played The Doctor.

Doctor Who is not only a huge part of the fabric of British popular culture but by now this time travel show has found its way into the hearts of many people all over the world.

It has inspired many spin-offs in the form of TV shows, comic books, movies, novels, you name it. But more than that, by now it has become an industry standard both when it comes to science-fiction television series and shows about time travel.

No wonder that Doctor Who continues to be successful after countless actor changes and plot twists.

Where to watch Doctor Who:

Timeless, nbc (2016 – 2018).

NBC Timeless

Another time travel TV series that has already become a cult classic and is adored by fans all over the world is NBC’s Timeless . And despite the turmoil that this show has gone through, it still is time traveling at its best.

Starring Malcolm Barrett, Matt Lanter, and Abigail Spencer as Rufus, Wyatt, and Lucy, Timeless  details the trio traveling to different times in an effort to stop their adversaries from rewriting history.

But as it later turns out, the conspiracy goes deeper than them just changing history. Since the people who our trio is chasing are traveling through time to take down a dangerous and all-powerful organization. The same one that helped build the time machine that Rufus, Wyatt, and Lucy are using.

And although Timeless went on for just two seasons (and a two-hour wrap-up movie), you should still check out the show because it’s not only entertaining but will make you think and want to know more about the events that each episode is exploring.

Where to watch Timeless:

Dc’s legends of tomorrow, the cw (2016 – present).

DC's Legends of Tomorrow

If you are a fan of superhero TV shows, then you will probably have heard about DC’s Legends of Tomorrow . It is a show that is a huge part of The CW’s Arrowverse. And has crossed over with shows like Arrow , The Flash , and Supergirl multiple times now.

And even if you don’t like the rest of the superhero series but do enjoy a good old time travel TV show, then I suggest you still give Legends of Tomorrow a watch.

The plot of this show is based around a team of superheroes that are traveling through time in their time machine christened the Waverider to prevent different catastrophes from happening. Both ones made by others and those created by the team’s previous adventures.

At the forefront, there are well-known DC heroes like Rip Hunter, Firestorm, The Atom, Kid Flash, Steel, and Vixen. Joined by some original characters like Caity Lotz’s White Canary among others.

One of the defining characteristics of Legends of Tomorrow is how fun it is. Because adjectives like unapologetic, witty, and entertaining are frequently used to describe this time travel series.

However, more than that, it adds an interesting layer to the whole Arrowverse universe. And above all, it is just a hoot to watch.

Where to watch Legends of Tomorrow:

12 monkeys, syfy (2015 – 2018).

SyFy 12 Monkeys

Then there also is SyFy’s 12 Monkeys , which is a little darker take on time traveling. One that comes with mystery, drama, and apocalyptic stakes. But that doesn’t lessen how good this time travel TV series is.

Split between two timelines, 12 Monkeys centers on Aaron Stanford’s James Cole, who is tasked to travel back in time and stop the distribution of a virus that has the ability to end the human race as we know it.

In Cole’s real timeline, the year is 2043 and people are struggling to survive because of the terrible mutations caused by the virus. So Cole travels back to 2015 to find virologist Cassie Railly, played by Amanda Schull, that can help him stop the release of the virus and the organization that is behind it called The Army of the 12 Monkeys.

If you think about it, the post-apocalyptic setting and time travel really do go hand in hand. Because if you can go back in time to stop history from being changed, why not go back to change it if it prevents something terrible from happening?

And that is what this show explores. Beautifully combining elements of mystery, drama, and science fiction, to form a great TV show.

Where to watch 12 Monkeys:

Outlander, starz (2014 – present).

best friend time travel

Want another show that mixes time travel with historical events and does it flawlessly? Then you should put Outlander on your must-watch TV show list!

The show starts in the 1940s when a combat nurse Claire Randall visits Inverness, Scotland as part of her second honeymoon with her husband Frank. Claire accidentally happens upon the standing stones at Craigh na Dun which transport her back in time to 1743.

To return to her own time she first has to survive 18th-century Scotland. And she does so by joining a group of rebel Highlanders from Clan MacKenzie and marrying one of the Highlanders, Jamie Fraser. But eventually, she falls in love with her new husband and aids the clan in evading British redcoats that are pursuing them.

Over the five seasons of Outlander that are currently out (with the sixth coming soon), we see Claire jump back and forth between the 20th and 18th centuries and her two families as she faces two pregnancies, wars, and much more. But eventually, Claire finds her way back to Jamie.

Where to watch Outlander:

Travelers, showcase (2016 – 2018).

Netflix Travelers

Then we have Travelers , a joint venture between Netflix and Canada’s Showcase that will tick all of your time travel TV show boxes.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world , this show depicts the adventures of travelers – operatives who go back in time to prevent the collapse of society.

These travelers are transferred into the bodies of our current-day humans, who otherwise would die, to blend in with twenty-first-century people. And with the help of their artificial intelligence boss from the future, travelers carry out missions in order to stop many catastrophic events from happening.

Travelers is a great mix of sci-fi and drama, featuring a great cast and spine-tingling storylines. So if you love all that and love a good time-travel series, then look no further than Travelers .

Where to watch Travelers:

Dark, netflix (2017 – 2020).

best friend time travel

Netflix’s first German original series was the science fiction series Dark , which mixes in some mystery drama with sci-fi: time travel, the apocalypse, wormholes, and parallel worlds.

Dark takes place in Winden, a fictional German town, and begins in 2019 after children begin to disappear from the town. As the show progresses, however, timelines jump drastically between as early as 1921 to as late as 2053.

As four families in Winden investigate the disappearances to reunite with their lost loved ones, they discover a wormhole beneath the local powerplant that allows them to travel between timelines, thus uncovering a generations-long conspiracy involving the town and their families.

Where to watch Dark:

The umbrella academy, netflix (2019 – present).

best friend time travel

Netflix brings another to the list with The Umbrella Academy .

On October 1, 1989, 43 infants were suddenly born from unsuspecting women despite them not even being pregnant the day before.

7 of them were raised together as the Hargreeve siblings and trained in their respective abilities until their relationship became strained as teenagers and they drifted apart.

Now, as adults, they’re brought back together by the death of their adoptive father – and the threat of the end of the world, of course.

They’re forced to travel back in time but end up in different times and places, and must find each other again to stop the nuclear apocalypse.

Where to watch The Umbrella Academy:

Seven days, upn (1998 – 2001).

best friend time travel

We know that the National Security Agency has its share of secrets, but what if one of those secrets was a time-traveling machine?

In UPN’s Seven Days , the plot centers on one such device made from alien technology found at Roswell.

The Chronosphere, as it’s called, can only be used in times when national security is at risk – the limited capacity of the device allows for just one human to go back in time by seven days in order to avert disasters.

Thus, when the White House is attacked, the NSA employs former Navy SEAL and CIA operative Frank Parker to go back and prevent it from happening.

Where to watch Seven Days:

Loki, disney+ (2021 – present).

best friend time travel

Yes, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the greatest gifts to the cinema of our time. Now, the MCU has expanded even further into the television medium and we’ve got a few series to accompany it!

One of those is Loki , which of course, centers on the God of Thunder’s mischievous adopted brother.

After the events in Avengers: Endgame , particularly his stealing of the Tesseract, Loki inadvertently creates another timeline that began in 2012, making him a “time variant” version of himself.

When confronted by the authorities, Loki is given two choices: face punishment and cease to exist, or travel through time to fix his own mess and the threat that has emerged.

Where to watch Loki:

Making history, fox (2017).

best friend time travel

The thing about traveling back in time is, you have to be very careful that your actions in the past won’t affect the future (which is essentially your actual present).

Most of the time, that’s something you wouldn’t know until you go back to your time. In Making History , however, Dan Chambers travels back in time to right before the American Revolution and sets off a series of events that seriously mess up the future.

Being able to constantly travel between time periods, Dan recruits the help of history professor Chis Parrish to travel with him and ensure that the American Revolution still takes place.

Where to watch Making History:

Quantum leap, nbc (1989 – 1993).

best friend time travel

The title of NBC’s sci-fi comedy-drama Quantum Leap is also the name of the time travel machine that accidentally sends its creator, physicist Dr. Sam Beckett, back into the past.

Now, he’s stuck – and not as himself, either!

Sam discovers that he jumped into the body of a stranger and because he’s still himself, doesn’t know all the details of his current identity.

With the help of his friend Al, who appears as a hologram only he can see, he must fix something that went wrong so he can jump in time again and eventually get back to his own body.

Where to watch Quantum Leap:

Quantum leap, nbc (2022 – present).

best friend time travel

Speaking of Quantum Leap , in 2022 NBC revived the 1989 series into a more modern take on the cult classic.

In this new Quantum Leap , thirty years have passed since Dr. Sam Beckett vanished into the Quantum Leap accelerator, and the Quantum Leap project was put to rest.

Now the project is restarted with a new team, who tries to puzzle together the mysteries behind Beckett and his time-traveling machine.

So, we follow Ben Song, the lead physicist of the Quantum Leap time travel project, who gets lost in the past after leaping back in time.

As he tries to return to the present he is helped by his fiancée Addison Augustine, who appears to him as a hologram during each leap, and the team back in the present time.

Where to watch Quantum Leap reboot:

The way home, hallmark channel (2023 – present).

best friend time travel

Among the newest time travel shows on this list is Hallmark’s The Way Home which has already been renewed for a second season.

The Way Home follows three generations of Landry women who learn that they can time travel after discovering a magic pond on their family’s farm in Port Haven.

When Kat and her daughter Alice return to Port Haven and are forced to move in with Alice’s estranged mother Del, the three women use time travel to uncover their family history, including what really happened to Kat’s little brother Jacob and whether they can prevent his disappearance.

Where to watch The Way Home:

Russian doll, netflix (2019 – 2022).

best friend time travel

Netflix’s Russian Doll deviates from the traditional time travel theme of a willing traveler in one specific timeline because Russian Doll’s protagonist Nadia Vulvokov not only has absolutely no choice or control over her so-called time traveling, but hers is also a time loop.

She wakes up every day having to relive the day of her 36th birthday party in New York City; every time, she dies and comes back to the exact same moment.

Every time, Nadia scrambles to figure out what happens to her and tries to prevent her death, leading her to find Alan, a man who is experiencing the same time loop.

Where to watch Russian Doll:

Undone, prime video (2019 – present).

best friend time travel

Undone may be an animated series, but it certainly isn’t geared toward younger audiences; though there is a touch of comedy, the series leans more towards the psychological drama genre and “explores the elastic nature of reality”.

The series follows Alma Winograd-Diaz right after she gets into a near-fatal car accident.

Right before the crash, she has a strange vision of her dead father, and right after it, she finds that she now has the ability to manipulate and move through time.

Using this newfound power, she travels between time periods to get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding her father’s death.

Where to watch Undone:

Voyagers, nbc (1982 – 1983).

best friend time travel

Premiering back in the early 1980s, NBC’s Voyagers! Is set in a world where time travel already exists.

In fact, there’s already a secret society in place that trains its members, called Voyagers, to go back in time and make sure that historical events happen exactly the way they’re supposed to – otherwise it could affect the present in unexpected ways.

One such Voyager is Phineas Bogg, although he isn’t exactly the best at the job.

During an accidental trip to 1982, he meets the young Jeffrey Jones and ends up bringing him along on one of his missions.

Having lost his Guidebook, Phineas now needs to rely on the extremely smart Jeffrey to get history right.

Where to watch Voyagers!:

Fringe, fox (2008 – 2013).

best friend time travel

Fox’s Fringe is a series that was well into the science fiction genre, with parallel universes, supernatural abilities, biotechnology, doomsday predictions, and of course, time travel.

The title is taken from fringe science, which is a branch that deals with scientific theories riddled with skepticism or even having been disproven already.

In Fringe , Special Agent Olivia Dunham is assigned to oversee the FBI ’s Fringe Division, which is run by Peter Bishop and his father Walter.

Together, the team uses both fringe science and Olivia’s knowledge in investigative techniques to explore the unexplained.

In the process, they discover a larger mystery involving parallel universes and alternate timelines .

Where to watch Fringe:

Time after time, abc (2017).

best friend time travel

ABC’s Time After Time is based on the novel of the same name written by Kevin Williamson in 1979.

In addition to that, each episode takes its title from a line in Cyndi Lauper’s song, which was inspired by the film (and subsequently, the same book!).

In Time After Time , we are taken to H.G. Wells’ home in 1893.

During a dinner party, he reveals his time machine – right before his guest John Stevenson is arrested for actually being Jack the Ripper .

John escapes through the time machine and Wells follows him straight into the present: 2017. Thus begins a cat-and-mouse game as John attempts to gain control of the machine.

Where to watch Time After Time:

11.22.63, hulu (2016).

best friend time travel

When you have anything with Stephen King involved, you know it’s going to be great.

Hulu’s eight-episode miniseries 11.22.63 is based on King’s novel 11/22/63 and is a science fiction thriller like no other.

Starring James Franco in the lead role, 11.22.63 follows Jake Epping, an English teacher from Maine .

His best friend Al reveals a time travel machine and asks him to take over the mission he’s been working on: to travel to the 60s and prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

The 4400, usa network/sky one (2004 – 2007).

best friend time travel

The 4400 is yet another slightly different take on the idea of time travel, in that there has been just one (fairly significant) shift forward in time, to the present.

Beginning in 1946, individuals who were easily overlooked or marginalized by society slowly began disappearing through beams of green light.

Now, all 4400 of them (hence the title) have been returned to the present day – without having aged a day and in some cases, even manifesting supernatural abilities like telekinesis, healing, and telepathy.

Tom Baldwin and Diana Skouris are assigned to investigate the phenomenon and find out why the 4400 have returned.

NOTE: For a fresher take on the show, you can also check out the reboot of the original series which is currently airing on The CW.

When tragedy strikes our lives, we always wish there was something we could’ve done to prevent it.

In ABC’s Somewhere Between we meet Laura Price, a successful news producer with a great career, a loving husband who’s a district attorney, and a beautiful daughter named Serena.

However, her life changes when the serial killer she is helping the cops to catch kills Serena.

She teams up with Nico, a former SFPD detective who experienced the same reset and wants to find the real killer to change his brother’s fate as well.

Terra nova, fox (2011).

best friend time travel

Terra Nova takes its viewers to both extremes of the time-traveling timeline.

The present-day is 2149, where overpopulation has threatened to deplete the Earth’s resources.

In an attempt to save Earth and mankind, scientists have found a way to travel back in time, sending groups of humans back to the Cretaceous Period to set up colonies.

Terra Nova focuses primarily on Elisabeth and Jim Shannon, and their three children, who have joined the 10th pilgrimage to Terra Nova.

They offer their expertise as a trauma surgeon and former narcotics detective and help those in charge with stopping those whose intentions go against the greater good.

Where to watch Terra Nova:

Frequency, the cw (2016 – 2017).

best friend time travel

One concept in time travel is known as “the butterfly effect”, wherein one small change in time may have great effects elsewhere.

Frequency demonstrates this concept perfectly.

Raimy Sullivan is an NYPD detective who, after a strange weather phenomenon, discovers that she can communicate with her dead father through his old ham radio.

Believing he was a corrupt cop, she learns the truth and warns him of his murder, thus saving his life.

However, this has profound effects on the future – Raimy’s present.

Now, they must work together across time to save her father and preserve the present.

Where to watch Frequency:

Life on mars, bbc one (2006).

best friend time travel

In many of the shows on the list so far, the protagonists experience a time loop that’s triggered at the point of their death.

It’s no different for Sam Tyler, the main character in the British series Life on Mars .

Sam is a Detective Chief Inspector with the Greater Manchester Police, but one day he accidentally gets hit by a car.

When he awakens, he’s in 1973 and working at one rank lower than he was: Detective Inspector.

The selling point of Life on Mars , however, is that we’re left unsure if Sam’s predicament is due to his actual death, a comatose, or time travel.

Where to watch Life on Mars:

Always a witch, netflix (2019 – 2020).

Beforeigners, hbo (2019 – present).

best friend time travel

HBO’s Beforeigners is a Norwegian sci-fi crime drama series and the first Norwegian original from HBO Europe.

The title is a clever play on words centered on the general plot: a group of “foreigners” has suddenly shown up at a neighborhood in Oslo, and they are all from “before” times, or several different time periods in history.

Whether from the Viking period , the Stone Age, or the more recent 19th century , each of these ‘Beforeigners’ tries to integrate in modern-day Norwegian society.

One of them even partners with a detective to investigate first a murdered Stone Age woman, then a series of murderers tied to Jack the Ripper.

Where to watch Beforeigners:

Alice, sbs tv (2020).

Yet another South Korean time travel series , Live Up to Your Name initially takes its viewers some 400 years into the past, right in the middle of the Joseon dynasty.

There we meet Heo Im, a doctor of traditional Korean medicine who also specializes in acupuncture.

On one of his treatments of the king’s migraines, he made a mistake and was charged with treason.

Chased by the king’s soldiers, he’s shot with an arrow and presumed dead when he falls into the river – except he ends up waking up in present-day Seoul instead, where he meets cardiothoracic surgeon Choi Yeon-kyung.

Our third South Korean series is Netflix’s My Only Love Song , which aired in 2017.

We start off in modern-day Korea where we meet Soo-jung, a talented and top-level actress.

However, it seems that the fame may have gotten to her head as she’s arrogant, and believes fame and money make the world go round.

When things don’t go her way on her new show, she winds up in a time-traveling van that takes her to the 6th century.

There, she meets a man much like herself in terms of arrogance, but his hidden soft spot and generosity towards the poor changes her perspective on her own life and self.

Where to watch My Only Love Song:

Signal, tvn (2016).

best friend time travel

Signal is based on the 2000 American film Frequency , but another thing that sets this South Korean series apart from others is that the cases investigated in the series are also based on real-life crimes in the country.

Signal follows a cold case profiler from 2015 and a detective from 1989 simultaneously; they discover they’re able to communicate with each other through an old walkie-talkie.

Using this unique ability to provide much-needed foresight in investigations, they team up to both solve and in some cases, even prevent these horrific crimes.

Where to watch Signal:

Rooftop prince, sbs (2012).

best friend time travel

Last but not least, South Korea brings its last time-traveling series to the table with Rooftop Prince , a comedy-drama filled with intrigue, mixed identities, and possible reincarnations.

Crown Prince Lee Gak from the Joseon dynasty accidentally time travels to 2012 with three others from his entourage, and their lives are thrown into a whirlwind.

He crosses paths with Se-na, who looks exactly like his recently deceased wife.

In the hopes of getting answers about his wife’s mysterious drowning, he assumes the identity of another man who he also looks exactly like and attempts to marry Se-na in this timeline as well.

You forgot The Time Tunnel, an Irwin Allen sci-fi show (Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Lost In Space, Land of The Giants), all classic 60s sci-fi

Journeyman should also be on this list. It was only half a season on NBC but it wraps up to a satisfying conclusion.

Fantastic acting and interesting characters.

Glad someone else watched Journeyman. I thought I’d was a great spiritual successor to Quantum Leap.

Journeyman is one of the good shows u can watch but qunatum leap i watched and didnt like

Where is The Time Tunnel?????

Another show for your list is “Being Erica” (CBC, 2009-2011). Excellent writing, and very unique.

i was looking for this comment. such an underrated show

I concur. This was definitely a great one. It certainly provides a lot of food for thought.

Some of the information in the Doctor Who one is wrong. It started in 1963, it was only revived in 2005 (you put 2006), and it’s been going for 39 seasons, as of June 2022

Thanks for letting me know! I updated the article accordingly.

12 Best Romance Movies That Incorporate Time Travel, Ranked

People will do anything for love.

Who would've thought that manipulating time would forge some of the great love stories? Whether it's found within the chivalry of the gentlemanly past or the future of civilization, cinema has shown that love has no bounds – even if it means traveling through time to get it. Where it may be a common trope for the sci-fi genre, romance flicks have also surprisingly used it to their advantage.

From classic rom-coms like 13 Going on 30 and The Lake House , to more hidden gems like If Only – these movies use the phenomenon of time travel to intertwine greater levels of fantasy and magic . Not only does this increase the overall cinematic experience, but these time travel romance movies also make the love stories incredibly epic.

12 '13 Going on 30' (2004)

Director: gary winick.

After being humiliated on her 13th birthday, Jenna Rink ( Christa B. Allen ) wishes to escape her life of pre-teen unpopularity and become a well-adjusted grownup in this time travel rom-com. She's shocked when she wakes up to find her wish has come true; somehow Jenna ( Jennifer Garner ) is now 30 and living in 2004. Soon she realizes how adulthood has its own set of struggles – one particularly being her love life.

As an iconic 2000s rom-com , 13 Going on 30 has warmed fans' hearts for decades. Largely driven by Garner's bubbly innocence, Jenna's connection with Matt (Mark Ruffalo) is undeniably pure and one of the great depictions of friends-to-lovers. This movie also uses time travel to put forth the message of how time is precious; by choosing to only look towards the future, one would never absorb the milestones of the present.

11 'When We First Met' (2018)

Director: ari sandel.

Having been friend-zoned by the girl of his dreams after meeting her at a Halloween party, Noah ( Adam DeVine ) remains close to Avery ( Alexandra Daddario ). Three years later, she's now engaged to someone else. Suddenly, Noah stumbles on the opportunity to travel back in time to the moment they met, giving him the chance to alter his life, and get the girl.

In an almost Groundhog Day scenario (and it's worth noting that film is a benchmark for romantic time-travel movie), When We First Met is a humorous film that's filled with charm and charisma thanks to the talents of the cast , especially in the case of DeVine. Where the romantic connection is present between characters, it isn't with whom you'd naturally expect as this is a classic tale that teaches audiences that everything happens for a reason.

When We First Met

10 'kate & leopold' (2001), director: james mangold.

Kate ( Meg Ryan ) is a 21st-century woman who's determined to focus on her career. She thinks she doesn't need romance in her life at all, that is until she meets Leopold ( Hugh Jackman ), an English Duke from the 19th century who's accidentally brought to the future via a portal made by her ex-boyfriend, Stuart ( Liev Schreiber ).

Where Kate & Leopold may be cheesy at times with the classic fish-out-of-water tropes, this movie is an underrated feel-good romance that will easily keep one warm and cozy. Don't expect it to be anything groundbreaking, but it's perfect for a chill night that needs a film that's mildly entertaining. With the script's quick wit and fun character dynamics, this twisted modern-day fairytale shows how love doesn't always come to us in the most expected ways.

9 'The Lake House' (2006)

Director: alejandro agresti.

As lonely doctor, Kate Forster ( Sandra Bullock ), moves out of her beloved lake house, she begins to exchange letters with its newest resident, a frustrated architect named Alex Wyler ( Keanu Reeves ). The two instantly spark a connection and form a budding romance. The only problem – she's living in the year 2006, whereas he's in 2004.

An epic love story where two are separated by time, this romantic flick is special in the way that it portrays the simplicities of intimacy. With only the written word to connect, Kate and Alex's closeness is unlike any other in The Lake House . It's also refreshing to see Keanu Reeves in a non-action role , which he pulls off with ease. The two main characters need not rely on physical attraction or physical needs, they're brought together by a deeper connection – one built on stories, soul, and emotions.

The Lake House

8 'if only' (2004), director: gil junger.

Struck with grief after the sudden loss of his girlfriend Samantha ( Jennifer Love Hewitt ), Ian ( Paul Nicholls ) is given the opportunity to relive the day she died and rewrite his wrongdoings. The repetition of time allows him to become a better partner and fix things before the impending tragedy, but it also brings some unexpected pain as he relives the best and worst moments of his relationship.

Despite being an emotional and bittersweet tale, If Only is filled with hope and true love. It sends a message to viewers about how important it is to treasure every moment, every milestone, and to treat every day as if it were your last. It's not an innovative concept by any stretch, but with the palpable chemistry between Hewitt and Nicholls, fans will be moved by their devotion towards each other, even until the film's final bittersweet twist .

7 'The Time Traveler's Wife' (2009)

Director: robert schwentke.

Henry Detamble ( Eric Bana ) is a librarian from Chicago who struggles with his rare genetic disorder that causes him to randomly travel through time, uncontrollably. His life becomes more complex when he meets and marries the love of his life, Claire ( Rachel McAdams ), as she must now learn to cope with her husband's condition.

An interesting spin on star-crossed lovers, The Time Traveler's Wife captures the struggles of fated love. Where Henry and Claire's story is romantic and tender, it's also incredibly bittersweet. With Henry's condition, fans (as well as Claire) are never sure of when he'll disappear. So when he does on occasions like their wedding, the heartbreak and tension are palpable. Their love story may be unconventional, but there's beauty to it.

The Time Traveler's Wife

6 'somewhere in time' (1980), director: jeannot szwarc.

Enamored and infatuated by a vintage portrait that hangs in a grand hotel, playwright Richard Collier ( Christopher Reeve ) finds a way to travel through time to 1912 to meet Elise McKenna ( Jane Seymour ), a stage actor. Where the two seem destined to be together, conflicts arise when Elise's obsessive manager, William ( Christopher Plummer ), tries to stop them.

A great movie that's severely slept on, Somewhere in Time tells the story of an unworldly and impossible love. With a brilliant concept and beautiful chemistry between Reeves and Seymour , this movie is one for the romantics and dreamers. It shows the sheer lengths someone is willing to go to find their soulmate – even if it means going through time itself.

5 'Back to the Future Part III' (1990)

Director: robert zemeckis.

As the third and final chapter to their adventures, Marty McFly ( Michael J. Fox ) must travel back in time to 1885 to the Old West to save his friend, Doctor Emmett Brown ( Christopher Lloyd ), from his impending murder. Matters become more complicated when Marty realizes that Doc has fallen deeply in love with local school teacher, Clara Clayton ( Mary Steenburgen ).

Though not a typical romance movie, Back to the Future Part III , is a film spearheaded by the themes of love. Where there are romantic storylines in the previous installments, Doc and Clara's is a breath of fresh air – mostly because Doc is a character that's so determined to avoid the supposed banalities of love. And yet, here he is, willing to be stuck in a foreign time period for the sake of love, happiness, and true companionship.

4 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time' (2006)

Director: mamoru hosoda.

A popular anime movie for beginners , The Girl Who Leapt Through Time tells the story of Makoto Konno (voiced by Riisa Naka ), who learns that she has the ability to time travel. She soon uses her newfound power to fix the small things in her daily life, from schoolwork to friendships. When she meets another person who can time travel, the two develop an unconventional bond.

Chiaki Mamiya (voiced by Takuya Ishida ) helps the protagonist realize and fix the consequences of messing with time, but soon reveals something heartbreaking to her. Their romance is complicated by the fact that Chiaki isn't from Makoto's present day, and eventually has to leave. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time will have fans rooting for the time-traveling duo's success until the tear-jerking end.

3 'Midnight in Paris' (2011)

Director: woody allen.

Whilst on a holiday in Paris with his fiancé and her family, Gil Pender ( Owen Wilson ) – a screenwriter and aspiring author – develops a habit of touring the city alone. One night he finds himself swept back in time to the 1920s where he meets his favorite cultural and artistic icons. By experiencing life in the past, he is forced to confront his dissatisfactions with the present.

As a romance movie, Midnight in Paris offers multiple romantic interests, each with its own qualities and individual purposes. From Inez's (McAdams) 21st-century realism, to Adriana's ( Marion Cotillard ) 1920s romanticized attitude to life, Gil is forced to reflect on what kind of love will give him true happiness. He'll even come to terms with the dangers of escapism. It's a severely underrated Owen Wilson movie , with the actor's performance being a delicate and moving one that anchors the entire story.

Midnight in Paris

While on a trip to Paris with his fiancée's family, a nostalgic screenwriter finds himself mysteriously going back to the 1920s every day at midnight.

2 'About Time' (2013)

Director: richard curtis.

Life changed forever when Tim Lake ( Domhnall Gleeson ) turned 21 as his father revealed an odd hereditary trait; all the men in their family have the ability to time travel. Though initially shocked, Tim decides to use his skill to alter his past to improve his future. His main goal – bolster his love life and win the heart of Mary (Rachel McAdams). He soon realizes that his power can have serious consequences if used incorrectly.

With a clever concept, a beautiful script, and a great cast, this poignant movie is one that masterfully tackles the topics of love, redemption, and loss. Where Gleeson and McAdams' chemistry is incredibly sweet, About Time is a movie about more than a simple romantic story . It uses time to talk about the importance of living in the moment and the consequences of one's choices. Viewers can expect its small-scale intimate story to move most to tears.

1 'Your Name' (2016)

Director: makoto shinkai.

Your Name is a massively popular and beloved anime film that blends fantasy, romance, and sci-fi together. It tells the story of two high school students – Taki Tachibana (voiced by Ryunosuke Kamiki ) and Mitsuha Miyamizu ( Mone Kamishiraishi ) – who inexplicably begin to swap bodies. The two characters have never met, but begin to improve each other's lives. Before they know it, they slowly fall in love in the process of learning about each other's realities.

It's impossible to talk about the time travel aspect of Your Name without completely spoiling the plot , but audiences who enjoy emotional animated films should consider this essential viewing for its notoriously tear-jerking twist. The gorgeous visuals and heartbreakingly romantic story easily make it the best film to show the potential of combining love and time travel in film.
