Best Time to Visit the Outer Banks

The first step in planning a solo getaway to the Outer Banks is choosing when to visit. As a beach destination, the barrier islands are naturally the most lively during the summer months of June to August. If you plan on spending your days soaking up the sun and sand, this is the time to visit. However, if you’re looking to avoid all the crowds that come with this time of year, you’re better off planning a trip during the spring or fall.

During the off-season, there’s still plenty to do in the Outer Banks for all types of solo travelers. Hitting the beach might be the most popular activity for visitors, but locals will be quick to tell you that it’s certainly not the only option. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie looking for your next thrill or a self-proclaimed foodie ready to taste your way through the islands, the Outer Banks offers ample excitement in any season.

EXPLORING ASHEVILLE AS A SOLO TRAVELER

This post contains affiliate links. If you click and make a purchase, I may receive payment at no additional cost to you. I only recommend products and brands I know, use, and trust and that I think you would like too. You can read my full disclaimer policy here .

Is Asheville a Destination for Solo Travelers?

First impressions – a quaint new york, the asheville vibe, arriving in the city, a nighttime haunted tour, the biltmore estate, the hop-on/hop-off trolley, the omni grove park inn, pack square park and downtown, haywood street and the grove arcade, the asheville botanical gardens, a segway tour of asheville, wrapping up downtown asheville, bent creek wilderness area, the hunger games triple falls – dupont state forest, catawba falls, visiting asheville – where to stay, touring asheville as a solo traveler – final thoughts, more things to do in asheville, nc.

I had wanted to visit Asheville for some time, but is it really somewhere a solo traveler would feel welcome? The answer is a resounding yes.

So why was I so hesitant? As a big believer in touring local , why wouldn’t Asheville be on my list?

Well, everyone in North Carolina is bombarded with “Romantic Asheville” advertisements every fall.

Commercials with couples clinking glasses on the balcony at The Biltmore Estate or walking through streets covered with colorful leaves fill the television.

Pin it for later!

You can imagine my surprise when I read that Asheville was listed as one of the top destinations for solo travelers multiple years in a row.

Curious, I decided to head out and explore Asheville as a solo traveler to see if it really measured up.

Since it’s only a three-and-a-half-hour drive, I had some flexibility and was able to put together the trip quickly.

My first impression of Asheville was, “this feels a lot like New York”.

Twelve floor tower that is beige with several windows in the background of pack square.

Now a lot of people will balk at this, but bear with me because there’s solid reasoning behind it which I learned on my tours.

Asheville became a vacation destination for the elite when the railroad came through in the late 1800s.

Gargoyle on the top of the Jackson Building, a gothic tower.

Many wealthy families at the time thought that the area promoted better health and several New Yorkers sought temporary refuge from the city.

One of the most famous wealthy New Yorkers to set up a vacation home in Asheville was George Vanderbilt. He bought 120,000 acres to build The Biltmore Estate which was finished in 1895.

As more people with money came to town, gentlemen like Edwin Grove seized the opportunity to build grand hotels such as the Omni Grove Park Inn completed in 1912.

Back of the Omni Grove Park Inn with its stone exterior.

The well-to-do wanted only the best and hired famous architects from big cities to design and oversee their construction.  Many of these talented craftsmen eventually made Asheville their home.

Buscombe County Courthouse building. A tall beige building that is rectangular and has many windows.

When the Great Depression hit, Asheville had the largest debt of any city in the United States.  Asheville opted to pay off its debt, which took almost 50 years.

With no money for new buildings, all the city could do was maintain its existing structures.  Many of the original buildings still stand in their untouched form.

Later, new buildings were erected, but the effect of old and new is part of the charm.

While Asheville is smaller than most metropolitan cities, and the buildings aren’t as tall, it has that eclectic feel. I still consider it one of North Carolina’s small towns , which I love exploring.

There’s something about the architecture and the sense that people in Asheville play by their own rules.

Small businesses are the norm, and large chains aren’t made to feel welcome.

It’s somewhere between a University town and a big city.  There’s a metropolitan sensibility but Western North Carolina laid-back appeal.

Solo travelers blend seamlessly with the locals and college students.

Exploring Asheville as a Solo Traveler

I got to town early and did a quick survey of the land.  The city is not too large and designed in something resembling a grid. This makes it easy to explore with a limited amount of time.

One thing to keep in mind is that the city can be crowded, especially in the fall. Arriving to see the fall colors is a big deal and Asheville is one of the best places in North Carolina for viewing.

My first tour was the walking Haunted Tour with Haunted Asheville .

Having a little time to spare before the tour, I grabbed a latte at Old Europe. The displays were lined with beautiful cakes and desserts, but I was good and just looked.

Finishing my latte, it was time to head out for an evening of scary fun.

Inside a European bakery with rust colored walls and a chalkboard menu. Behind the counter is equipment to make coffees.

The tour started in the creepy alleyway (their words) near the Masonic Temple.

I didn’t know what to expect, but It turned out to be a great way to learn about the city, both the layout and the history while being entertained.

Our guide, Tadd, had an incredible knowledge of the area and was a master storyteller.  We learned a lot about the city you wouldn’t hear about on a daytime tour.

As we wound through the streets, I saw the city in a new light and tried to make note of places I wanted to return to during the day.

We walked through areas I had not seen earlier and didn’t come up during my research. This is why I love nighttime haunted tours.

Tall building photographed from the ground looking up in the dark. There are gargoyles on the top and one window has light.

Our group was around 35 to 40 people but you wouldn’t know it.  Tadd did a great job of projecting his voice and also stopping at key locations to let everyone pull in to listen.

I’m still not sure if I was the only solo attendee on the tour or not.  We blended seamlessly with families, friends, couples, and singles.

The Biltmore Estate.  It’s the elephant in the room.  You can’t visit Asheville and not go to the Biltmore Estate.

An ornate beige tower with grey trim that is one of the sections of the Biltmore Estate. A lion statue sits on the ground outside.

I was really hesitant about this.  I’m in Asheville, traveling solo, heading to the one location highlighted as THE romantic getaway for couples.

My goal was to spend a half-day there, power through, and get a few photos.  I had been warned by many friends and family to block out the entire day, but for some reason, I just didn’t think it would be fun.

My house time was 1:45 pm so I started in the gardens.  During peak seasons, you have a time noted on your ticket.  You are only allowed to enter the home after this time.

I wandered through the main gardens and then the hiking trails.

No one mentioned that there were trails.  Few people venture out on the trails, allowing me the opportunity to really enjoy the area and get great photos.

Woman wearing a blue jacket and multicolored scarf taking a selfie on a wooden bridge in a wooded area.

When my house time arrived, I went inside and spent about 1.5 hours touring the rooms.

Finally, I finished up at Antler Village for my free wine tasting.  I do not leave free wine on the table.

All in all, I left The Biltmore Estate seven hours after arriving.  It was a good day with lots of amazing pictures.

The estate had much more to offer, even for a solo traveler, than I expected.

You can read about my full day at The Biltmore Estate here .

Trying to get the most out of my visit, I booked a ticket on the Hop-On/Hop-Off Trolley . If you only have one day to tour Asheville, this is my recommendation for seeing the city.

Red trolley parked in front of Pack Square with two taller old fashioned buildings behind it.

Only have one day? Click here to find out how to use the Trolley for a full One Day in Asheville!

Since I had already been through the city, I knew the places where I wanted to Hop-Off and had planned my itinerary.

The trolley started in the Historic Montford District which was one of the areas I had not been familiar with prior to the tour.

The trolley drivers were excellent guides.  As they drove around, they wove history with fun facts and their own unique brand of storytelling.

It’s hard to say how much of the information was accurate, but it was fun.

I was beginning to learn that Asheville residents love their town, know its history, and really like to tell you about it.

The Omni Grove Park Inn was on my must-see list thanks to its beautiful Sunset Terrace. It’s known as “The” location for grabbing a drink and watching the sunset over Asheville.

What I didn’t realize was that during the day the views were just as beautiful. Downtown Asheville is to the north in the distance with the mountains a bit south.

Photo of Sunset Terrace showing the rectangular stone top of the spa at the Omni Grove Park Inn. There is miles of land with trees behind it and Asheville can be seen in the distance to the left.

The architecture of the building itself and the grounds were beautiful.  I wish I had time to sit and relax with a drink on the terrace.

While I had seen Pack Square when I first arrived, the Haunted Tour pointed out the significance of the area and the buildings surrounding it.  It was one of the places I noted to return.

The area boasts a variety of architecture from Neo-Classical to Gothic which all seem to blend seamlessly and give Asheville a bit of its eclectic vibe.

Pack Square lined by buildings with different architecture.

As I walked downtown, I also found a few of the Urban Trail installations.

The Urban Trail is a walking museum with thirty installations throughout the city.  You can download a map and locate all of them.  There are videos explaining the significance of each piece.

If you don’t have time to find all thirty installations, just keep an eye out and you’ll see many of them throughout your adventures.

Green statue of a girl getting water, one of the Urban Trail installations.

After snapping a lot of photos, I explored nearby shops, including the Mast General Store.  Luckily they not only had magnets for gifts but also the car charger for my phone which had died on the drive up.

Haywood Street has a lot of shops and restaurants.  There’s also a little park in the middle.

It’s a triangular shape and can be a bit confusing to maneuver around.

Of course, I wanted to check out Asheville’s Wall Street.  It’s one block with cute shops and restaurants.

While nothing like New York’s Wall Street, there are some similarities like the Flat Iron building.  In true Asheville style, to note its location, there’s a statue of a large iron across the street.

Metal sculpture of an iron that is taller than a person on a street.

In this area, you’ll also find the Grove Arcade, with its beautiful atrium feel.  If you look closely on the outside, you’ll see faces engraved along the pillars.

There’s a great story behind this which I won’t spoil.  Just make sure to notice it when you’re there.

One of the best things about the Grove is Battery Park Book Exchange .

This little gem is a bookstore slash champagne bar.  You read that correctly.

After enjoying an itty bitty baby apple cider cupcake with no calories (I’m sure of this – it was too tiny for calories), I wandered around the bookshop with a blood orange mimosa in hand.

Inside of a bookstore with Victorian Era design. Thee walls are blue and red and there is a table with an awning like you would see on a Victorian bed.

Wanting to explore the areas outside of downtown, I stopped at the Asheville Botanical Gardens.

There are 2 to 3 miles of relaxing trails and places to stop and enjoy.  There’s also a gift shop with extremely helpful and knowledgeable staff.

Wooden shack with a small porch behind a metal sculpture of a bucket with hands on either side.

I have wanted to ride a Segway since they became a thing. My dream came true thanks to a Segway tour of Asheville with Moving Sidewalk Tours .

A Segway is one of the best ways to tour Asheville. You have easy maneuverability like walking but can go faster and further.

woman in long sleeve shirt and vest wearing a yellow and pink helmet riding a Segway in Riverside Cemetery.

I got really lucky and was the only person who signed up.  My guide, Scott, quickly assessed what I had already seen around Asheville and opted to take me through Historic Montford for a deeper look at the neighborhood.

We also rode through Riverside Cemetery and saw some of the famous graves there such as Thomas Wolfe.

Topping it off, we made a final stop at Basilica Saint Lawrence after a quick tour of Haywood Street.

Exterior of Basilica Saint Lawrence, a red brick cathedral with tall towers on either side and a large wooden door.

I had already seen the outside of the Basilica but didn’t realize you could go inside.

The building is said to have the largest self-supported dome in North America.  Inside, light comes through the stained glass windows and bounces off the ceiling.

Interior dome at Basilica Saint Lawrence. It is a large beige brick dome with a small window in the middle.

In a room to the side, is a massive beautiful tour that opens to the tomb of Rafael Guastavino, the architect who patented the self-supporting arch designed used for the Basilica, Grand Central Station, and the Boston Public Library.

I finished up downtown Asheville by buying chocolates at Chocolate Fetish and taking a quick peek in the Woolworths store which is now an art gallery.  It still houses the soda fountain though.

I also treated myself to dinner at one of the restaurants on Wall Street, including a drink made with tequila and something spicy.  Asheville does know how to pour a great drink.

Hiking Near Asheville

Asheville is renowned for being a launching pad for outdoor sports in western North Carolina. Many visitors ask about hiking in the area.

There are plenty of options for beginner, intermediate, and advanced hikers.  I really enjoy hiking by myself and getting lost in my thoughts.

Based on local suggestions, I started at Bent Creek Wilderness and wove my way to the North Carolina Arboretum through an attached trail.

The trails here are not marked and you can get turned around with all of the branches that spin off the main trails. Make sure to have a GPS app or map available before heading into this area.

A wooden bridge on a trail in the woods. It is dark like dusk is falling.

In a whirlwind afternoon, I hit up Dupont State Forest to take in four of the six waterfalls before the rain hit.

Many scenes from The Hunger Games were filmed in Asheville. The famous scene with the 3-tiered waterfall was filmed in Dupont State Forest.

The Forest sports 6 waterfalls. The famous triple falls can be found on a trail that takes you past 3 of them. It’s a popular area. Even on a rainy day, the parking lot was almost full.

Triple Falls waterfall used in The Hunger Games. The waterfall has three distinct sections with space between them.

On the way home from Asheville, I made a short stop at Catawba Falls.

The trail is only 2.6 miles round trip and the waterfall is worth the stop.

Catawba falls. A tall waterfall where the water comes down in narrow rivulets rather than a gushing fall.

There are many places to stay in Asheville from small hotels to fancy splurges like the Inn at Biltmore or the Omni Grove Park Inn.

If you’re looking for something fun and different, Asheville has really embraced the tiny house or RV as an Airbnb , so you can take advantage and try something new.

I have to say that exploring Asheville as a solo traveler was one of my favorite trips.  I never felt awkward or out of place and busy almost every second.

The locals love to talk about their town and make recommendations and it’s rare they don’t know the answer to a question.

People would start conversations sitting next to me at the bar, standing in line for coffee, and on the hiking trails.

The city is teeming with families, students, couples, and solo travelers.  There’s downtown to explore, great restaurants, rich histories, ghosts, and plenty of outdoor activities like hiking and mountain biking.

If you’re a solo traveler, regardless of age or abilities, Asheville is a must-see destination.

Best 7 Things to do Solo Asheville

The Best 7 Things to do Solo in Asheville

When I got to Asheville, I didn’t really know what to expect. Especially on a solo trip. I was nervous there wasn’t going to be a lot to do or anything that I was interested in doing.

Boy, I was wrong! It ended up being the perfect addition to my solo southern road trip .

If you’re headed there alone, never fear, I’ve got you! Here’s The Best 7 Things to do Solo in Asheville .

Lellas BBQ Asheville, NC

Table of Contents

Asheville reminds me a lot of the PNW. The community is filled with liberal artists, brewers and hikers. Everyone is friendly, with a dash of southern charm.

It’s known for good food, beer and the outdoors. Which is exactly what this list is filled with!

One // Go for a Hike through Blue Ridge Parkway

Asheville is surrounded by trees and mountains. It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to. How can you not partake in a hike? There are tons from beginners to advanced.

If you’re new to hiking alone, check out my post on Female Solo Hiking to help make you feel more comfortable!

Two // Pizza and Beer at the Movie Theater Brewery

Asheville Pizza & Brewing ! What a great idea to not only be a brewery, but to also serve pizza (with vegan options?) AND be a movie theater?? Come on. Best solo treat/activity ever.

Pro-tip : Snag your ticket early. They’ll sell out ASAP Fri-Sun nights.

Three // Biltmore Estate

This was a surprise and delight. I actually think I would have overwhelmed if I had done this experience with friends or family. I got to go at my own pace, spend extra time at the gift shop and go to the winery .

This is especially magical at Christmas, if you’re solo. They have you enter with a large group so you really don’t feel alone at all. Book your ticket well in advance during this time.

Luellas BBQ

Four // Adventure Center

This is great for groups but also solo travelers! Especially those who love adventure and are always up for an adrenaline rush. The Asheville Adventure Center is for you.

From kayaking to zip-lining, these guys literally have everything at one place. I didn’t get the opportunity to go and it’s my one regret from my trip.

Five // Brewery Hop

Something similar to the PNW, Asheville is known for their breweries. All local, all brewed in house, all worth it. This would be a great tasting/hopping experience. There are also a few brewery tours on Viator !

They’re also known for local ciders (definitely try Noble Cider !). They also have a few wineries on the outskirt of town, if you have a car.

Six // Explore the River Arts District & Take an Art Class

This area of Asheville is for the cool people. The art studios and galleries were built in former industrial buildings. It’s pact with unique pieces of art and awesome people. You can also book different types of classes while you’re there.

Seven // Get Brisket

Despite how much the PNW it feels, Asheville is still the south! Meaning, they’ve got some of the best barbecue you’re ever gonna taste. I swung into Luella’s BBQ and it was exactly what I needed for a midday break.

Did I miss anything on my list??

If so, leave them in the comment section below because I’d love to know what others like to do for my next trip out there! It won’t be any time soon but I’ve been dreaming about going back since I left.

Happy Traveling, my friends!

From the towering peaks to the west to the sandy shores of the protected coastline, North Carolina is home to a variety of experiences.

The state is where the Wright Brothers famously made their first flight and where a little soda brand called Pepsi gained international recognition. It’s also where musicians like Earl Scruggs, Nina Simone and John Coltrane were born. Driving from one end to the other is straightforward and the state has extensive airport and rail networks.

Celebrate the Gilded Age in Asheville

Start your Asheville sojourn at the Biltmore Estate , the largest privately owned home in America. Built in the style of a French chateau for the Vanderbilt family, the Gilded Age mansion has onsite restaurants, inns and even a winery.

The Civilian Conservation Corps-built Blue Ridge Parkway traverses nearly 500 miles of undisturbed vistas between North Carolina and Virginia . Detour from the parkway to Pisgah National Forest , home to the area’s most popular hiking area and Mt. Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi River.

Visit Charlotte’s popular landmarks

While most cities have a “downtown,” Charlotte’s hub is known as Uptown. Here you’ll find the majority of the landmarks, including the Mint Museum of Art (which has a second location in the city in a former US Mint), the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art , and the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts and Culture . The artist Romare Bearden, who was born in the city, is honored with a public park nearby.

It’s also a sports fan’s paradise, home to the Carolina Panthers football team. The NASCAR Hall of Fame is a sprawling, interactive museum devoted to racing history, with drivers’ trophies and car simulators.

The US National Whitewater Center is a 1,300-acre park with ziplines, trails and artificial rapids used for the Olympic Trials.

Best day trips from Charlotte

A lemur looks off to the left as it stands on a tree branch. There is a woman carrying a camera looking up at the lemur in the forest.

Learn about lemurs in Durham

While often lumped in with Raleigh, Durham has an atmosphere all its own. Home to famed Duke University , there’s plenty to see on and off campus. The Duke Lemur Center is a world-class primate center with the most diverse population of lemurs outside of Madagascar, open for tours by appointment.

Roam the galleries of the Nasher Museum of Art , which has pieces from Mesoamerica along with modern works by Kehinde Wiley, painter of President Obama’s portrait. The Sarah P. Duke Gardens first opened in 1934 and has native North Carolina species like the Venus flytrap.

Get artistic in Greensboro

Greensboro has a long history of textile manufacturing, where Lee and Wrangler jeans has its headquarters. Leftover textiles from these factories were once sold at a downtown store, which has since been revived as the offbeat Elsewhere Museum , where artists create new work based on what’s already inside the building.

The city made history during the Civil Rights Movement when local students held a sit-in at the Woolworth’s lunch counter. The original seats are part of the International Civil Rights Center & Museum , which also has exhibits on the Middle Passage and voting rights.

Dive into history in the North Carolina Smokies

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park spans between Tennessee and North Carolina, but the latter section is quieter. In Bryson City, visitors can ride the rails on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad , which runs along the Tuckasegee River. The Nantahala Outdoor Center was the original rafting outfitter in town and has grown to include a restaurant, cabins and ziplining.

The town of Cherokee honors the Native people that were forcibly removed on the Trail of Tears. The tribe shares its 11,000-year-old history at the Museum of the Cherokee Indian and in the seasonal outdoor play Unto These Hills .

Beachfront houses on the sandy coast of North Carolina's Outer Banks

Go for a dive at the Outer Banks

The Outer Banks is home to dozens of islands with small towns and fishing villages. The 175-mile stretch is where Europeans first arrived, including the mysterious Roanoke colony that disappeared in 1587.

Pirates trawled the waters, including Blackbeard, who met his fate on Ocracoke Island. It’s also known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic for the many shipwrecks on the ocean floor, which now make for excellent diving sites.

At Kitty Hawk , visitors can see where the Wright Brothers made their first flight. Try your own luck with a glider flight at the nearby sand dunes at Jockey’s Ridge State Park . The best views are from the lighthouses along the coast, including the Cape Hatteras , Currituck Beach and Bodie Island lighthouses.

Dine out in Raleigh

The capital city has an energy that attracts lovers of the arts. The North Carolina Museum of Art features the work of both the state’s creatives and internationally recognized artists. The Pour House brings in touring music acts, first opened in 1997.

Raleigh is also home to many of the state’s James Beard-nominated restaurants. Ashley Christensen was among the first, now with an empire that includes multiple restaurants but most notable among them, Poole’s Diner . St. Roch Fine Oysters + Bar has authentic Louisiana cuisine, including gumbo and barbecue shrimp. Cheetie Kumar’s Indian restaurant Garland and Oscar Diaz’s The Cortez have also been honored.

Experience mini Hollywood in Wilmington

The city of Wilmington is on the Cape River, inland from the Atlantic Ocean. In the past few years, it’s also been known as a sort of mini Hollywood thanks to its nearby film studio.

Embrace your nostalgia by visiting the filming locations from Dawson’s Creek, One Tree Hill, and Eastbound and Down using the brochures from the visitor’s center as a guide.

Wilmington was also home to a young athlete known as Michael Jordan. The famed basketball player has an exhibit at the Cape Fear Museum of History featuring his jerseys and memorabilia. The museum also has a replica of a giant sloth that roamed during the prehistoric era.

School children visiting the historic C. Winkler Bakery built in 1800 in Old Salem

Head to a living museum in Winston-Salem

The city known as Winston-Salem was settled by the Moravian people fleeing modern-day Czechia in search of religious freedom. Their original homes and buildings have been restored and now operate as Old Salem , a living history museum.

The area came to prominence for its tobacco industry, which still has a presence today. RJ Reynolds established his company here and lived at a grand home near Wake Forest University called Reynolda . Today it’s an art museum with sprawling grounds. His former Art Deco office which inspired the Empire State Building) is now the stylish Kimpton Cardinal Hotel .

Solo Travelers Itineraries

Traveling alone is growing in popularity as it is a one-of-a-kind experience any type of traveler can enjoy. From setting your own schedule to partaking in your preferred activities, Wilmington, NC and its island beaches offer a variety of activities, restaurants, attractions and more that can be tailored to the travel preferences of solo travelers.

Whether you’re a foodie, outdoor adventurer, R&R seeker or looking to try a little bit of everything, here is the inspiration for planning the perfect solo getaway to Wilmington, NC and Island Beaches.

Bespoke DRT

Food & Beverage Connoisseur

There is no shortage of exceptional dining options to be found in Wilmington and its island beaches where eating solo won’t be daunting, but rather ideal. For breakfast, hop in line and taste Carolina Beach history: a famously-glazed donut from Britt’s Donut Shop , originally opened in 1939. Solo visitors to Kure Beach should swing by Happy Hippies Java Hut for a caffeine fix made from North Carolina roasted coffee beans and sip your coffee with a view from the Kure Beach Fishing Pier . Grab a coffee and an almond croissant from The Workshop at Wrightsville Beach and browse handmade fossil jewelry – personally collected by the shop owners on their scuba adventures – at the same time. In downtown Wilmington, Bespoke Coffee and Dry Goods offers a large seating area with big picture windows perfect for people watching.

For lunch, grab a bite at Ocean Grill & Tiki Bar , which features bar seating overlooking the Atlantic Ocean alongside fresh coastal cuisine. Craft beer lovers will want to stop by the only brewery on the island – Good Hops Brewing – with plenty of other solo drinkers happy to engage in conversation outside in the beer garden. In Wilmington, hop on a bar stool at the Fork N Cork and try one of the lunch specials featured on Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives,” or visit Brasserie Du Soleil , which not only offers authentic French cuisine but also has a scenic outdoor dining area where visitors can have a leisurely lunch accompanied by a favorite book. Wrightsville Beach Brewery is known for its long bar inside and live music outside where solo travelers can sip on a half- or full-pint, eat and groove alongside other craft beer drinkers.

For dinner, sit at Port Land Grille 's bar where solo travelers will have full access to the menu featuring sustainable farm items, farm- and sea-to-table Italian cuisine including wood-fired pizza and homemade pastas at Benny’s Big Time Pizzeria . RX Chicken & Oysters is committed to bringing the freshest harvest from local farmers, fisherman and growers to its tables and is not to be missed!

The streets of downtown Wilmington are bustling at night with plenty of indoor and outdoor patio options for sipping and people watching. For those looking to sip on specialty drinks and signature cocktails, visit Wilmington’s only AAA Four Diamond award-winning restaurant manna ave. 123 and snag a seat at the bar where the resident mixologist will concoct a drink using a verity of fresh juices, herbs, vermouths, bitters and always a surprising ingredient of the day while you await your meal. Caprice Bistro ’s upstairs sofa bar is cozy and perfect for the solo traveler looking for a cocktail and French fare. Lula’s – an underground pub near the Riverwalk – is known for its friendly staff and customers, while any sports fan is guaranteed to make new acquaintances at Irish pub Slainte .

Did someone say outdoor adventure? Wilmington and its island beaches is the perfect location for the solo adventurer seeking a thrill. Wrightsville Beach, in particular, is known for its active lifestyle and welcoming culture with plenty of watersports and outdoor adventures. Runners and surfers alike frequent the island for weekend trips and more, so solo travelers interested in adventure will always meet a friend. Cape Fear Paddleboarding or Wrightsville SUP offer group SUP lessons where solo travelers can learn the way of the waves with others who have like interests. Sail away with lessons from the Blockade Runner Sailing School or Wrightsville Performance Sailing to experience the beautiful waterways surrounding the island and become “mates” with fellow classmates. If you would rather explore under the sea, WB Diving offers dive charters to some of the most popular spots in the area, like fossil ledges located just off the coast where Megalodon teeth and various marine mammal fossils are rampant. Scuba divers can check out John D. Gill , one of the largest divable wrecks located 25 miles from the Masonboro Island and a popular spot to see various tropical fish and other marine life. In Kure beach, dive in to explore North Carolina's first Heritage Dive Site, The Condor, an historic sunken Blockade Runner ship.

At Carolina Beach, sign up for a private or group surf lesson with Olympian, ISA World Champion professional surfer Tony Silvagni at Tony Silvagni Surf School to learn a new skill on your own or with new friends. Paddle NC offers single kayak rentals for those looking to explore the natural wonders – including the Venus flytrap – of Carolina Beach State Park . If a group outing is more your style, set out for an eco-adventure guided tour or visit one of the many natural ecological environments like Zeke’s Island Reserve at Kure Beach on a tour with Kayak Carolina .

History Buff & Art Enthusiast

Step back in time at a number of attractions throughout Wilmington. Get an up-close look at examples of Victorian south architecture at Bellamy Mansion , originally built in 1861 as a prominent family’s residence; the Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens constructed on the former walls of the 1744 county jail and graced with colonial-style gardens; or Latimer House that was built in 1852 and now a showcase of upper-class life in Victorian Wilmington. Held the second Thursday of every month from May to September, visitors can enjoy a two-for-one visit with live music and a tour of Bellamy Mansion during the Jazz at the Mansion concert series.

Treat yourself to the best seat in the house at a show at Thalian Hall Center for Performing Arts , one of the oldest theaters in America known for its beautiful interior, or at The Wilson Center , which is the largest and most technologically advanced performance center in Eastern North Carolina. Single seats are often available closer to the stage, making it that much easier to sit back, relax and enjoy the show!

R&R Seeker

Seeking a trip filled with rest and relaxation? It’s hard not to find peace when it comes to sand, sun and surf, as each of Wilmington’s three island beaches offer more than your average beach day. Wrightsville Beach will have you wondering how you found a slice of your favorite tropical islands in North Carolina with its crystal blue water and miles of pristine sand. If you like your beach day with a side of history, venture to Fort Fisher State Historic Site and the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area , where you can see the coquina rocks at low tide and peruse Civil War battlegrounds. While sunbathing on Carolina Beach, take a break from the sun and grab a cocktail over the ocean at Ocean Grill & Tiki Bar .

For the shop-savvy traveler, take a day to explore the destination’s unique shopping areas. Stroll down the Wilmington Riverwalk and enjoy the Cotton Exchange where you can peruse a number of unique shops from clothing to jewelry and antiques located within eight historical buildings. Fashionistas will love Jess James + Co for her vintage clothing and accessories and other boutique shopping in Wilmington’s Castle Street Arts & Antique District. Or discover open-air, pedestrian-friendly shopping villages, local surf shops and chic beach boutiques at Wrightsville Beach. Following a morning of being out-and-about, refresh and recharge with a manicure and pedicure from nearby Head to Toe Spa .

View from the deck of the Kure Lighthouse Inn at sunset

To feel right at home after a day full of activities, enjoy a quiet and relaxing night at one of the destination’s many bed and breakfasts known for their welcoming hosts. The Graystone and The Verandas – both AAA/CAA Four Diamond award winners – offer historic charm in downtown Wilmington, while Kure Lighthouse Inn at Kure Beach offers a similar, intimate experience beachside. For those traveling with man’s best friend, Summer Sands Suites has dog-friendly rooms and easy access to both the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway at Wrightsville Beach.

Popular North Carolina City Among America's 'Best Solo Travel' Destinations

By Sarah Tate

best solo trips in north carolina

Traveling can often be a fun bonding activity for you and your loved ones, whether it's an exciting family vacation or a trip with your closest friends. However, sometimes traveling alone can be just what you need for some relaxation and learning more about yourself as you exude some serious main character energy traversing a new spot all on your lonesome for your very own Eat Pray Love moment.

Good Housekeeping compiled a list of dozens of the best solo travel destinations around the U.S., basing its choices on variables like walkability, safety, access to nature, self-care opportunities and number of historic sites. One spot in North Carolina landed a spot on the list.

The cozy mountain town of Asheville is among the best spots in the country to visit by yourself. You don't need a large group to enjoy the art cool arts district, visit incredible local breweries or see stunning views of the surrounded Blue Ridge Mountains. This is what the site had to say about the city:

"Asheville has an impressive range of offerings for all types of interests. Are you a fan of history? There's the Biltmore Estate. Shopper? Head for the Grove Arcade. Hiker? the Blue Ridge Mountains are yours to explore. Art Lover? Stroll through the River Arts District. Oh, and did we mention the local breweries and exceptional Southern comfort food?"

To see more of the best places in the country to travel solo, check out the full list at Good Housekeeping .

Women Who Travel Solo: A Solo Trip to Wilmington, North Carolina with Courtney Giardina

Courtney Giardina, a contemporary romance novelist from New York, takes a solo trip to Wilmington, North Carolina and discovers the relaxing benefits of solo travel in this week’s  Women Who Travel Solo.

How did you get started traveling?

My best college friend and I made a vow upon graduation that we would do one girls trip each year to a new destination and explore new things. We’ve kept that promise and since visited many fun places across the country.

Why did you decide to take a solo trip to Wilmington, North Carolina?

I was in the midst of writing my third novel and progress had become really slow. I had so much going on in my everyday life I was finding it hard to sit down and focus only on my writing because were so many distractions. At brunch one day, one of my friends suggested I take a trip to the beach. I thought it was silly at first, but after thinking about it I thought why not? I packed up my car that afternoon, called a hotel to make a reservation and hit the road.

solo trip to wilmington north carolina

Tell us about your experience as a solo traveler in Wilmington.

I loved it! I felt it to be a very calming experience. I didn’t have to worry about being anywhere at any specific time. I had no plans and no agenda and it felt great. I actually took a notebook and a pen to the beach each day I was there and wrote pieces of my novel by hand. It was very freeing not sitting at a desk in front of my computer.

I’m also a huge One Tree Hill fan and since Wilmington is where it was filmed for all those years, I took myself on a self guided tour throughout the town. I found the famous bridge and the houses where they filmed. It was a neat experience to see it in real life after all those years on television.

What recommendations do you have for solo travelers in Wilmington?

I loved Wrightsville Beach . It wasn’t at all crowded and the beach was clean. A great place to relax.

Also make sure to make your way to the Riverfront in downtown Wilmington where in the summertime there’s live music, festivals and farmers markets. It’s also a great place to walk around as you can walk the boardwalk along the Cape Fear River . The downtown area also has tons of food options. I made sure to stop at Port City Java for my morning coffee and had some amazing sweet potato pancakes at Dixie Grill .

I also made a stop at the Bluewater Grill . It was the inspiration for a restaurant in my first novel and I had never been so stopped for dinner one night. Although a bit pricey, the food was delicious.

I of course recommend the tour for any One Tree Hill fans. You can find the addresses pretty easily online to plot your route.

What was the best part of your solo trip to Wilmington?

I think the best part of the trip was how liberated I felt. Walking into a restaurant and eating alone can be a bit intimidating so I was proud of myself that I was able to do it and conquer that fear that everyone was staring at me and judging me.

What advice do you have for women who are traveling alone?

Always have your cell phone charged. Pay attention to where you are and just use common sense. Everywhere you go these days things can happen, but you don’t want that to discourage the amazing memories you’ll make.

Do you have anything else to add to inspire women solo travelers?

Do it! You won’t regret it. We all need a little bit of time for ourselves.

My first taste of solo travel was when I tagged along with my husband on a business trip to London. We met up in the evening for dinner or drinks and shared a hotel room, of course. However, during the day, I was totally on my own and free to explore the city in any way I chose. I joined a sightseeing bike tour of classic London landmarks, spent hours wandering parks and museums, searched far and wide for London’s best fish and chips and successfully learned to navigate the city on my own.

Once I learned how to travel solo , I felt comfortable and confident being on my own in a new place. Now, I relish the opportunity to take a solo trip. I love traveling with my friends and family, but when you travel on your own, your time belongs only to you.

To that end, TPG rounded up some of the best solo travel destinations to help you step out of your comfort zone and experience travel in a new way.

Boston, Massachusetts

Good for: History buffs.

From its crucial role in the Revolutionary War to longstanding icons like Fenway Park, Quincy Market and its many museums, Boston plays host to a wealth of attractions for solo travelers who fancy themselves history buffs. For a firsthand look at Boston’s early days, step onto The Freedom Trail , a walking tour of 16 sites that played integral roles in the birth of our nation. You can continue your exploration in some of Boston’s historic neighborhoods, including Beacon Hill and the North End (Boson’s Little Italy).

If you plan to spend an evening cheering on The Boston Red Sox, a stay at The Verb Hotel (starting at $240 per night) will put you within walking distance of Fenway. Or, for a points-friendly option, book a room at The Liberty, A Luxury Collection Hotel (starting at $313 or 53,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night) The building once served as the home of Boston’s Charles Street Jail and you can dine among the preserved jail cell facades at the hotel’s restaurant, Clink.

Asheville, North Carolina

Good for: Hiking, biking and beer.

Asheville truly has it all for outdoor enthusiasts — hiking and mountain biking trails through the hazy vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains (the city provides a “ hike finder ” to help you find the perfect trail), paddling down the French Broad River or simply checking out Asheville’s outdoor shopping districts like the River Arts District or Biltmore Park by foot (shopping counts as cardio in my book).

When it’s time for some apres-hike brews and bites, head to one of Asheville’s breweries. There’s plenty to choose from, but Wicked Weed and Hi-Wire top the list for spots to satisfy your thirst and hunger in a fun setting.

For an upscale boutique stay in downtown Asheville, check in to The Foundry Hotel (starting at $265 or 76,000 Hilton Honors points per night), a Curio Collection by Hilton property or the budget-friendly Hotel Indigo Asheville Downtown (starting at $136 or 27,000 IHG One Rewards points per night.

New Orleans, Louisiana

Good for: Live music and livelier crowds.

Even if you visit The Big Easy alone, you are never truly on your own. Whether it’s vibing with the throngs of tourists on Bourbon Street, standing in line for beignets at Cafe du Monde or learning about the city’s rich history on a group walking tour, you’re likely to be surrounded by friendly faces with similar interests (and a taste for powdered-sugar-covered fried dough).

If you’ve never been to New Orleans , make time to hit up hot spots like Pat O’Briens for a rum-soaked hurricane, Central Grocery, where the famous muffuletta sandwich was invented and Preservation Jazz Hall for live jazz. If you still have time during your trip, venture farther from the French Quarter to City Park and Mardi Gras World or take a guided tour of New Orleans’ hauntingly beautiful mausoleums.

For a hotel that’s “close but not too close” to the French Quarter, stay at The Eliza Jane (starting at $150 or 28,000 IHG One Rewards points per night) or the Kimpton Hotel Fontenot (starting at $150 or 17,000 World of Hyatt points per night), two of New Orleans’ many points-friendly hotels .

Austin, Texas

Good for: Music-lovers and foodies.

The Texas state capital is known for many things — delicious barbecue, a stellar music scene, gorgeous green spaces and lakes where you can stay active and the world’s largest urban colony of bats, to name a few. What’s great about visiting Austin as a solo traveler are the various neighborhoods you can visit to enjoy dining, drinks and entertainment all in one place.

Sixth Street closes down to traffic on weekends and is a great spot for creative cocktails and neon-lit music venues. For something a little more laid back, head to Rainey Street. Also, South Congress, with its unique boutiques and variety of dining options, is a must-visit for both locals and tourists.

Zilker Park puts more than 350 acres of outdoor fun at your fingertips. You can swim in the spring-fed Barton Springs Pool, explore on a rented bike or canoe or time your visit to annual events like the Austin City Limits Music Festival or the Austin Kite Festival.

Some of the best points hotels in Austin are close to downtown, including The Driskill (starting at $215 or 21,000 World of Hyatt points per night) , a World of Hyatt property, and the Austin Proper Hotel (starting at $400 or 42,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night).

Portland, Oregon

Good for: Exploring the unique landscape of the Pacific Northwest.

Portland is surrounded by natural beauty on all sides. Though the city lies in a valley, you can often see Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens and the towering green firs and pines that surround it. To best enjoy these natural wonders, visit Powell Butte for panoramic mountain views or the outlook behind Pittock Mansion for city views with Mount Hood looking in the background.

I’d be remiss to leave out all the weird and wonderful within Portland’s city limits. Voracious readers could spend hours in Powell’s City of Books, the country’s largest independent bookstore, and the outdoor Portland Saturday Market is considered to be the largest continually operating arts-and-crafts market in the country. The city has so many food carts they’ve created a handy guide to help you find exactly what you’re hungry for.

Many of Portland’s hotels reflect the city’s unique style, like the Kimpton Hotel Vintage Portland (starting at $170 or 32,000 IHG One Rewards points per night) and The Nines Hotel Portland  (starting at $230 or 43,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night), both located downtown.

San Diego, California

Good for: A mix of beach days and California history.

San Diego is home to many beautiful beaches, but there’s more to San Diego than just lazy days in the sand (though I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t leave the beach during your visit). Many of San Diego’s best-known attractions are in Balboa Park, including the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Natural History Museum, the San Diego Air & Space Museum and many splendid gardens and recreational areas.

About two miles west of Balboa Park on San Diego Bay, stop by the USS Midway Museum to learn about historic naval aircraft and helicopters on board the USS Midway aircraft carrier. Old Town San Diego — the first European settlement in California — and the Gaslamp Quarter are also worth peeling yourself away from the beach for.

If you prefer to stay close to downtown and the bay, reserve a room at the Embassy Suites by Hilton San Diego Bay Downtown (starting at $210 or 67,000 Hilton Honors points per night). If you want to be closer to the beach, head for the famed Hotel del Coronado (starting at $400 or 95,000 Hilton Honors points per night).

Nashville, Tennessee

Good for: Legendary country music.

From the 4,000-seat Grand Ole Opry to the rows of bars with live music along Lower Broadway, you are never too far from legendary country stars and up-and-coming crooners when you visit Nashville.

However, Nashville isn’t only a hotbed of honky tonk. It’s also where music fans go to immerse themselves in the history of country music. You can pay homage to the greats like Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash at the Country Music Hall of Fame or visit RCA Studio B, where perma-stars like Elvis Presley and Dolly Parton recorded country classics.

Nashville is also well known for its shopping scene. Visit The District in downtown Nashville for everything from record albums to cowboy boots, and head to the shops in Hillsboro Village or Gulch for local and nationally-known fashion and accessory brands.

Related: The best hotels to book in Nashville for the full Music City experience

The Embassy Suites Downtown Nashville (starting at $160 or 47,000 Hilton Honors points per night) offers spacious rooms and a rooftop indoor pool, but for a true Nashville experience you’ll never forget, go for the Dolly Parton suite at the Graduate Nashville hotel (starting at $300 per night).

Sedona, Arizona

Good for: Reconnecting with nature.

There are few places in the U.S. with more spectacular scenery than Sedona, Arizona . Surrounded by striking red-rock buttes and majestic canyons, this desert destination is an ideal spot for communing with nature. For some, that could mean a solitary day of hiking at the picturesque Bell Rock, while others may prefer a more spiritual experience like a yoga hiking tour of Sedona .

Sedona’s art scene is as vibrant as its landscape. Peruse shops and galleries in the Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village or the Sedona Artist Market. On the first Friday of every month , many galleries stay open into the evening hours and have special artist receptions and other events.

The Hilton Sedona Resort at Bell Rock (starting at $250 or 53,000 Hilton Honors points per night) is about as close as you can get to Sedona’s best hiking trails. For a serene retreat experience, stay at the L’Auberge de Sedona (starting at $250 or 53,000 Hilton Honors points per night) or The Wilde Resort & Spa (starting at $450 per night).

Bottom line

When you take a solo trip, you have the freedom and independence to go where you want and do what you want whenever you want.

Whether you are looking for outdoor adventures, foodie heaven or big-city excitement, these eight destinations are among the best cities in the U.S. for solo travelers.

SPONSORED:  With states reopening, enjoying a meal from a restaurant no longer just means curbside pickup.

And when you do spend on dining, you should use a credit card that will maximize your rewards and potentially even score special discounts. Thanks to temporary card bonuses and changes due to coronavirus, you may even be able to score a meal at your favorite restaurant for free.

These are the best credit cards for dining out, taking out, and ordering in to maximize every meal purchase.

What GAFFL Users Are Saying

Marie

"It’s really nice to have a platform like GAFFL with lots of travelers wanting to do the same as you, a real beautiful cultural exchange. You can meet people so easily and in a trustful way. We were four girls, from French, German and American backgrounds, without knowing each other from before. We spent an amazing week together, 2000km driving, camping on the way. We saw kangaroos, koalas, penguins and pelicans"

Saed

“I have found GAFFL to be an amazing tool for finding similar minded travel partners to embark on an adventure. Through GAFFL, I had organized a trip to Mexico City last month and Quazi joined the trip from Victoria, BC. We spent 14 days of straight exploring, hiking, eating and drinking. Quite an amazing experience - all thanks to GAFFL!”

Scarlett

"I accidentally scrolled across GAFFL and I'm so pleased I did. I met Amaia and immediately decided to road-trip together. We're spending 10 days together and it's great because we have so much in common. Couldn't have done it without GAFFL helping us find one another! It has honestly made NZ so much cheaper to explore as I get to split the costs with someone too"
