11 Best Southern Caribbean Cruise Ports

Southern Caribbean cruise ports offer warm temperatures to northerners who want to escape cold winters.

The Caribbean Sea is more than 1 million square miles and 1,000 miles from the northern tip to the southern tip. For that reason, temperatures in the southern destinations are often warmer than in the north. They matter to cruise and resort visitors who want to spend time on beaches and in the seawater.

Daytime temperatures average in the mid 80s Fahrenheit or mid 20s Celsius during the winter and into the low 90s Fahrenheit or low 30s Celsius during the summer. Rainfall is low in the winter, spring and early summer. It jumps in the fall during the annual Caribbean hurricane season.

A large number of seven-day cruises to southern Caribbean ports of call leave from San Juan , Puerto Rico, in order to reach the largest number of islands in the shortest period of time.

Southern Caribbean cruises often include ports that are listed on eastern Caribbean cruises.

Southern cruises often visit four or five ports. They include some combination of Antigua, Aruba, Barbados, Bonaire, Curacao, Dominica, San Juan, St. Kitts, St. Lucia and St. Maarten. They sometimes include the U.S. Virgin Islands for longer cruises that depart from Florida ports.

Ships dock at the capital city of St. John’s. The island is known for having 365 beaches or one for every day of the year. A decent one close to the cruise docks is Fort James Beach. A taxi is the best way to get there; be sure to negotiate the rate before getting into the cab.

Antigua has one of the most important naval bases in the Caribbean’s colonial history at English Harbour. The nearby Shirley Heights has military fortifications and an overlook of English Harbour.

Aruba is one of the smaller southern Caribbean islands. It also is one of the most arid. Aruba is known for Palm Beach, one of the best beaches in the Caribbean. It also is known for scuba diving among sunken ships. Aruba is one of the Dutch ABC islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao, which lie quite near each other off the coast of Venezuela.

The island is one of the more commercial destinations in the Caribbean. But cruise visitors will find plenty of the usual island attractions plus a few that are unusual.

One of the best is swimming with sea turtles, a popular excursion just off the coast where the turtles gather. Harrison’s Cave has underground streams and a 40-foot waterfall.

Bonaire is the smallest, least populated and least visited southern Caribbean port. It has the same Dutch cultural flavors as Aruba and Curacao but not much of the commercialization. It is mainly known for snorkeling and scuba diving.

The cruise port of Willemstad is famous for the colorful harborfront street of Handelskade. This historic UNESCO World Heritage Site is among the most photographed sites in the Caribbean. Just beyond Handelskade is Punda, the city’s main commercial district. Cruise visitors will find plenty to see and do. It is not as well known for beaches as Aruba.

Dominica is promoting itself as an ecotourism vacation and with good reason. It is one of the better hiking experiences in the Caribbean because of rainforests, mountains and waterfalls. But it is not a beach destination. The island has some of the highest rainfalls in the Caribbean.

San Juan is a common departure port for southern Caribbean cruises. Tourists who fly into San Juan and have time to explore should consider going to Old San Juan, which is close to the cruise docks.

Old San Juan has two famous forts, cobblestone streets and a variety of historical and architectural attractions. It can easily fill anywhere from two hours to six hours of time before or after a cruise.

St. Kitts had promoted itself as an ecotourism destination because it was quiet and undeveloped compared to some bigger islands.

It has taken a step up in recent years with a new cruise mall filled with shops, restaurants and entertainment. Visitors walk right off the docks and into the open-air mall.

The St. Kitts Scenic Railway is unique in the Caribbean. Guests can take a 30-mile route around the island and encircle the 3,800-foot Mount Liamuiga.

St. Lucia has a pretty cruise port and even prettier landscape in the interior of the island. We fondly remember an ATV excursion along the rugged coastline.

The most famous landmark is the Pitons, a pair of mountains that stand 2,000 feet over the island. Visitors there can hike, photograph and take volcanic mud baths. The views in the more remote part of the island are among the best in the Caribbean.

St. Maarten

This small but beautiful island has fewer attractions, although visitors are more likely to go because of cruises and for quiet overnight vacations.

Perhaps the best attraction on the island is the cruise port of Philipsburg. It is one of the best in the Caribbean because of its size and atmosphere. It is packed with shops and restaurants.

Other attractions include the famous (and clothing optional) Orient Bay beach and the French towns of Marigot and Grand Case, which have the best restaurants on the island. I recommend the panoramic views atop Fort Louis and taking an excursion to the nearby St. Barth or Anguilla.

St. Thomas isn’t technically a southern Caribbean island, but southern Caribbean cruises often stop there on their way from San Juan to the south.

Any list of attractions starts with shopping in Havensight Mall at the cruise port as well as in the capital city of Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas. Buck Island is one of the few fully protected marine parks in the United States.

Virgin Islands National Park includes an underwater reserve that makes up 5,650 acres. For these reasons, the U.S. Virgin Islands abound with snorkeling and diving opportunities.

This Southern Caribbean Cruise guide gives an overview of what to expect on a Caribbean cruise, southern Caribbean cruise port guides, and general cruising tips.

I’ve grown up going on a family cruise every few years. I’ve cruised to Alaska, the Mediterranean, Antarctica, and the Caribbean multiple times.

I truly believe that a cruise is on of the best ways to travel the #1 way to see the Caribbean.

I recently took a Southern Caribbean cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas . The cruise started in Puerto Rico and visited five ports in seven days.

It was a packed itinerary, with many beach days, amazing waters, and a ton of fun on board.

Reasons to Take a Southern Caribbean Cruise

As mentioned above, cruising is the best way to see the Caribbean.

With many island destinations, limited intra-island transportation, and the sunny weather, cruising is the best way to see the Caribbean in a relaxing way.

The below 7 reasons are why I recommend taking a Caribbean cruise and why I recommend visiting the Southern Caribbean specifically:

1. It’s the best way to see multiple locations quickly – on a Caribbean cruise, you will see 3-5 ports within one week. To see that many ports without a cruise would take at least double the time.

2. Unique Ports – By starting a bit more South in the Caribbean, you can get to more exotic locations, such as the ports listed below.

3. Many ports can be very difficult to get to otherwise – on a Caribbean cruise, you will visit remote islands and locations that would take multiple flights to get to. With a cruise, you go to sleep then magically wake up at the next destination instead of dealing with complicated travel days.

4. Accommodations can be hard to come by – With a cruise, you have your luxury hotel traveling with you.

5. Guaranteed great food every night – while sampling local food is a great way to travel, it can be stressful to find safe food in some remote destinations. I love coming back to a guaranteed delicious meal on the ship after a day of exploring.

6. Activities for all ages – I already said that cruising is great for all ages, and the activities on board back that up. For kids, there is a kid and teens club, a splash pad, and waterslides. For adults, there are mixology classes, karaoke, night parties, gambling, and more.  

7. You can revisit your favorite ports for longer – one day is often not enough time to experience everything in a destination. Luckily, you can use a cruise to find your favorite ports then revisit them for longer on a standalone vacation.

The Best Cruise Line for a Southern Caribbean Cruise

If you are planning a Southern Caribbean Cruise, be sure choose the right cruise line. The cruise line you choose will dictate the quality of food, amenities, activities, and excursion options.

While many cruise lines operate in the Caribbean, my favorite is Royal Caribbean , hands down.

Royal Caribbean is knowing for having the largest and most innovative ships. Earlier this year, I cruised on the Harmony of the Seas which is the second largest cruise ship in the world and is absolutely incredible.

My most recent trip, on the Explorer of the seas was amazing. Although the ship lacked the crazy onboard amenities of the newer super ships, the smaller ships have their perks as well.

The recently renovated restaurants were fantastic, the venues were intimate, and the staff felt very personal.  With the attention to detail and fun that Royal puts into every ship, you are guaranteed to have a great vacation.

Even better, the service on Royal Caribbean is unparalleled. Even onboard a ship of 4000+ passengers, the dining and stateroom staff memorized our names and preferences.

No request is too much for the accommodating staff, from requesting a decorated stateroom for a special occasion to ordering off-menu items at the dining room.

In addition to the best ships and service, Royal Caribbean offers amazing itineraries to popular ports with limited sea days.

Southern Caribbean Cruise Port Guides

The below Caribbean cruise port guides are based on the ports I visited on my recent Royal Caribbean southern Caribbean cruise.

When selecting activities, decide if you want to take a planned excursion or tour, or explore the port on your own.

If there is one key activity or site to see in a destination, I typically opt for a tour since it allows you to learn more in a short amount of time and takes away the stress of planning.

If a destination is known for beaches, I’ll explore on my own and spend time relaxing.

When deciding between a cruise excursion and an independently run tour, there are a few things to consider. Cruise excursions are typically more expensive, and there are limited options, but they are easy to plan, have guaranteed quality, and the ship will wait for you if you are running late.

Independently run tours are often more affordable, have more options, and have a more local presence. However, it can be difficult to coordinate your tour with the ship. I alternate between the two based on what is offered and what sounds interesting.

Below, I have broken down what to do in each port by the top activity and some other great options.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Top Activity: Old San Juan Food and History Tour

Other Great Things to Do: Day trips on a catamaran , to El Yunque National Forest , or to a bioluminescent bay

San Juan Puerto Rico is one of my favorite embarkation and debarkation ports because it is a destination in itself.

Puerto Rico is a United States Territory in the Caribbean. Its known for rum, white sand beaches, beautiful water, and a rich culture.

If you have time in Puerto Rico before or after your cruise, I highly recommend a food and history tour of old town to get a taste of the city and the island.

St Thomas US Virgin Islands

Top Activity: Beach Day at Magen’s Bay

Other Great Things to Do: Snorkeling , food tour , day trip to St John

St Thomas is one of three US Virgin Islands. It’s a great cruise port for a beach day or snorkeling. The island is popular for tourists with great resorts, high end shopping, and reputation for being safe.

My favorite thing to do in St Thomas is spend the day at Magen’s Bay, which happens to be one of my favorite beaches in the world.

St Kitts & Nevis

Top Activity: Cockleshell Beach & Reggae Beach Bar

Other Great Things to Do: Snorkeling , day trip to Nevis , scenic railway

St Kitts and the neighboring island of Nevis is a lush, jungle island. One of the most popular activities on the island is a scenic railway tour.

However, it is a bit overpriced, so I recommend a beach day at the Reggae Beach Bar at Cockleshell Beach. This beach bar is my favorite I’ve been to, with fantastic service and great drinks.

Top Activity: Dickenson Bay Beach Day

Other Great Things to Do: Half Moon Bay, Fryes Beach, Shirley Heights

Antigua is known for having 365 beautiful beaches around the island. There are a lot of great options, listed above, but my favorite is Dickenson Bay.

It’s the perfect combination between white sand, clear water, moderate crowds, and beach amenities such as bars and chairs.

Other Great Things to Do: Zipline tour , snorkeling

Of these cruise ports, St Lucia is one of the most popular standalone tourist destinations. The best thing to do in St Lucia is a catamaran tour to the Pitons, iconic twin mountains on the coast of the island. On the tour, you will tour the island then board a boat for snorkeling, beach time, and lunch.

Top Activity: Snorkeling

Other Great Things to Do: Hiking, biking , rum tasting

Barbados is a great port for snorkeling, especially if you want to see turtles. This snorkel tour will visit two locations near each other.

One location is known for sea turtles and the other is a shipwreck. The snorkeling sites will be crowded, but there is plenty of space and plenty of fish for everyone.

St Maarten / St Martin

Top Activity: Beach Day at Friars Bay

Other Great Things to Do: Snorkeling , Maho Beach , Orient Beach

St Maarten or St Martin is a half Dutch and half French island. Its easy to travel between both sides, and the island is small enough to see both in one day.

The most popular beach on the island is Maho bay, where you can watch planes land at the international airport. I prefer Friar’s bay on the French side of the island for a more relaxed beach day.

What to Pack for a Caribbean Cruise

Daytime – During the day on a cruise, you will either be onboard at sea or exploring a port.

During sea days, I spend most of my time at the pool, so pack a swimsuit with a cute cover up to wear when heading inside for activities or dining.

In port, shorts and a tank top with sneakers or sandals is great depending on if you are doing adventure activities or casual exploring.

Dinner Attire – Dinner most days is casual attire, but there are some dress code requirements.

For the main dining room or specialty dining, men should plan to wear a collared shirt, and women should plan to wear a sundress or nice blouse.

Formal Attire – A 7-night cruise often has two formal nights that fall on the sea days. For formal night, men should wear slacks and a sport coat and women a nice dress with heels.

If this doesn’t sound fun to you, plan to visit a casual dining option on those nights instead and you can wear what you want.

Other Packing Essentials – in addition to clothing, I recommend packing the above essentials for your cruise. Items such as the hat, sunscreen, and water are helpful with the hot sun.

The portable charger and waterproof case will keep your phone dry and charged on long port days. The book will keep you entertained on pool days, and the towel clips will keep your towel from blowing around.

The Imodium and bug spray will protect you from bad water and mosquitos in port, respectively.

Top Ports of Call in Eastern Caribbean

The Eastern Caribbean is home to some of the most picturesque and vibrant cruise ports. Each port combines rich history, beautiful beaches, and unique shopping experiences.

1. Charlotte Amalie , St. Thomas

Charlotte Amalie , the capital of St. Thomas, offers an enticing blend of colonial elegance and island charm. Cruise visitors can explore Fort Christian , a Danish-built fortress dating back to the 1600s, or stroll along Yacht Haven Grande for high-end shopping. This beautiful Caribbean port is also a gateway to stunning beaches like Magens Bay .

3. St John’s , Antigua

There are two main cruise ship docking facilities in St. John’s:

• Heritage Quay – This is located right in downtown St. John’s and can accommodate up to 4 large cruise ships at once. It has duty-free shopping right at the terminal.
• Deep Water Harbour – This facility is about 1 mile from downtown St. John’s and can dock 7 cruise ships at once. Passengers are shuttled into town.

Taxis and rental cars are readily available right at the cruise terminal. Public buses also provide an inexpensive way to get around the island.

4. Old San Juan , Puerto Rico

The historic city of Old San Juan in Puerto Rico greets travelers with colorful Spanish colonial buildings and cobblestoned streets. Visitors can tour the grand El Morro fortress , which towers over the ocean, or enjoy authentic Puerto Rican cuisine in one of the many local restaurants.

Western Caribbean Highlights

The Western Caribbean offers an array of exotic destinations with diverse cultures, breathtaking natural landscapes, and ancient historical sites. These ports provide enriching experiences for every traveler.

1. George Town , Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

George Town is the vibrant capital of Grand Cayman , known for its excellent duty-free shopping. We didn’t spend long here though, as a short cab ride away, you’ll find the famous Seven Mile Beach. This is one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful shores.

If you have a full day in Grand Cayman, we recommend a trip to Stingray City, where you can get up close with friendly marine life. Alternatively, the Botanical Gardens with their distinctive blue iguanas are well worth a visit.

2. Belize City, Belize

Belize City port acts as a portal to limitless adventures in Belize ‘s lush jungles and ancient Mayan ruins. Belize City itself isn’t particularly photogenic, so shore excursions are definitely recommended.

The highlight for many is the opportunity to visit the iconic Altun Ha , an important Mayan site, or to explore the spectacular Barrier Reef , second in size only to Australia’s. We took a plane over the Great Blue Hole, an enormous marine sinkhole, and also travelled by water taxi to laid-back Caye Caulker.

3. Cozumel and Costa Maya

Cozumel and Costa Maya are gems of the Yucatan Peninsula, offering cultural richness and some of the best snorkeling and diving spots.

• Cozumel is celebrated for its vibrant coral reefs and is a gateway to the famed Chichen Itza ruins.
• Costa Maya , less developed, presents an authentic slice of Mayan culture with easy access to majestic ruins and beautiful beaches.

4. Montego Bay, Jamaica

They're back! This major cruise line is restarting a beloved Southern Caribbean routing

Princess Cruises is bringing back a much-loved set of itineraries that it hasn't offered in years.

The world's fifth-largest cruise line this week announced it would restart seven-night voyages to the Southern Caribbean out of San Juan, Puerto Rico — something it hasn't had on its schedule for more than a decade.

The sailings, which will take place on the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess, are set to kick off in October 2025.

The voyages will alternate between two itineraries. The first will bring calls at Tortola, St. Kitts, Dominica, Grenada and Barbados. The second will bring calls at St. Thomas, St. Maarten (the Dutch side of the island of St. Martin), Antigua, St. Vincent and Barbados.

Passengers can combine the two itineraries to create a 14-night trip focused on the Southern Caribbean with almost no overlapping ports.

Such seven-night sailings to the Southern Caribbean out of San Juan have been popular in the past among cruisers who want to get deep into the Southern Caribbean on a cruise without being away for more than a week. Southern Caribbean sailings from the major cruise hubs in Florida tend to be longer due to the long sailing distances involved.

San Juan is an ideal home port for sailings to the Southern Caribbean due to its location, which is closer to Southern Caribbean islands than the bigger cruise hubs in Florida.

Sailings out of San Juan typically have more port calls than Caribbean sailings out of any other port.

The new Princess sailings out of San Juan will be offered seasonally for the winter, with the trips continuing through March 2026.

In a statement accompanying the announcement, Princess Chief Commercial Officer Terry Thornton suggested that a growing number of flights into San Juan from cities in the United States as well as Europe and South America was making it easier to operate cruises out of the city.

"Our return to San Juan after more than a decade not only reconnects our guests with a port rich in history and charm, but further expands the variety of departure points across North America that our guests can sail from," Thornton said.

Fares for the sailings have not yet been announced. The trips will be available to book starting May 16.

The announcement marks a last-minute change in deployment for Grand Princess, which originally was scheduled to sail to Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific in late 2025 out of the Australian ports of Brisbane and Sydney.

Unveiled in 1998, Grand Princess is the oldest Princess cruise ship . It's the namesake vessel for the line's Grand Class of vessels, which remain at the core of the Princess fleet.

Princess Cruises Expands Caribbean Program with Return to San Juan Home Port

Grand Princess to Sail Southern Caribbean Itineraries  from Puerto Rico , Visiting Most Ports of any Seven-Day Caribbean Itinerary

Princess Cruises has announced its return to San Juan Puerto Rico , offering Southern Caribbean voyages with the Grand Princess ship from October 2025 to March 2026.

Princess Cruises to Launch Voyages Out of This Caribbean Destination for the First Time in 10 Years

Princess Cruises will return to San Juan, Puerto Rico, next year for the first time in more than 10 years, sailing week-long voyages from the U.S. territory.

Starting October 2025, the cruise line will sail from the capital of Puerto Rico on seven-day voyages on board the Grand Princess . Princess will plan to sail these southern Caribbean voyages through March 2026, the company shared with Travel + Leisure.

The Grand Princess will sail two alternating itineraries, both roundtrip from San Juan. The first will include stops in Tortola, St. Kitts, Dominica, Grenada, and Barbados, while the second will include stops in St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Antigua, St. Vincent, and Barbados. Each will include a day at sea.

“Our return to San Juan after more than a decade not only reconnects our guests with a port rich in history and charm, but further expands the variety of departure points across North America that our guests can sail from,” Terry Thornton, the chief commercial officer for Princess Cruises, said in a statement shared with T+L. “Puerto Rico remains one of the fastest-growing destinations in the Caribbean and continues to attract new airlift from source markets across the U.S. as well as markets in Europe and South America, which makes it a great fit for Princess. Plus, there are many outstanding options to choose from for a great pre- or post-cruise stay.”

While on board the 2,600-guest Grand Princess ship, passengers can enjoy a mini golf putting course, indulge in afternoon tea, relax in the adults-only The Sanctuary, and more. The Grand Princess is the oldest in the company’s fleet , but underwent a major renovation in 2019.

Cruises from San Juan will go on sale on May 16, according to the company.

While Princess is making plans to return to San Juan next year, the company was forced to delay another 2025 debut when it pushed back the delivery of its newest ship , the Star Princess , by about two months. That ship is now expected to sail in the fall of 2025.

All the ships in this adults-only cruise line feature 1,404 cabins (most with balconies) and RockStar Quarters suites, where guests have access to Richard's Rooftop, an exclusive outdoor deck space. The superyacht-inspired vessels boast 20-plus eateries, including restaurants by Michelin-starred chefs, and a variety of onboard fitness and wellness spaces. At Redemption Spa, relax and recharge in the mud room or salt therapy chamber – and then take rejuvenating dips in the hot and cold plunge pools. You can even order a bottle of bubbly anywhere on the ship via the Virgin Voyages app's secret "Shake for Champagne" feature.

Two ships in P&O Cruises' U.K.-based fleet – Arcadia and Aurora – are exclusively for adults 18 and older. Arcadia, the slightly newer of the two ships (debuted in 2005), carries 2,094 guests at double occupancy, plus 866 crew. The ship departs from Southampton in the U.K. and sails to a variety of European destinations, ranging from Spain and the Canary Islands to Norway and Iceland; some cruises visit the U.S. and Canada. The ship will also sail world cruises in January 2025 and 2026.

Arcadia's 15 restaurants, cafes and bars include Indian cuisine with a British twist at Sindhu, as well as steaks and seafood by renowned British chef Marco Pierre White at Ocean Grill. Passengers can take a class to sample the line's branded gins; sip Champagne at Intermezzo, the ship's cocktail and Champagne venue; or enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif at the yacht-inspired Spinnaker. After exploring exciting ports of call, head back on board to enjoy Arcadia's elegant interiors and top-notch service. You can splurge on a stone therapy treatment and a visit to the thermal suite at the spa for some extra pampering, followed by a live show at the three-tiered theater, The Palladium. Then, finish off the evening dancing the night away at The Globe.

Aurora is a slightly more intimate ship, carrying 1,874 passengers (double occupancy) and 850 crew members. A four-level atrium gallery sits at the heart of the vessel. Itineraries include destinations in the Mediterranean, the Baltic, the British Isles, Iceland, the Caribbean and South America. There are 19 restaurants, bars and cafes on the ship, including club-style restaurant Alexandria and casual spots like The Beach House. After dinner, live entertainment and dancing await you at the show lounge Carmen's, as do larger productions at the ritzy 660-seat Curzon Theatre.

Top Cruises Designed for Adults

While some all-inclusive – or mostly all-inclusive – boutique and luxury cruise lines are family-friendly, many of the onboard venues and activities are adult-by-design. Since there are few (or no) activities geared toward younger cruisers and no babysitting services, you typically won't find parents with young children on these ships.

Azamara's four upscale boutique ships provide immersive travel experiences geared toward adults. These smaller ships – accommodating a maximum of 702 guests – sail waterways and rivers that larger ships can't access, docking in city centers and unique ports of call around the globe.

Many Azamara voyages also offer longer stays and overnights in port, unlike some competitors' itineraries. Some even feature special events, such as a 12-night voyage from Rome to watch the Monaco Grand Prix in May 2025, or a 25-night cruise in February 2025 from Buenos Aires, Argentina , to attend Carnival in Rio de Janeiro . When it launched in 2019, Scenic Eclipse I was touted as "The World's First Discovery Yacht." The intimate vessel offers an all-inclusive, ultra-luxurious experience for just 228 guests (double occupancy). The line's second luxury yacht, Scenic Eclipse II, which is nearly identical to its sister ship, debuted from Lisbon, Portugal , in April 2023. On board, guests will have butler service, a nearly one-to-one ratio of guests to staff, 24-hour gourmet dining, premium alcoholic beverages, one complimentary shore excursion in each port, gratuities and more.

Silver Ray is set to become the 12th ship in the Silversea fleet when it debuts in summer 2024. The luxury vessel adds more open spaces and top-notch cuisine. Silver Ray is also the second vessel in the fleet to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and is billed as a more sustainable cruise ship.

Four of the line's ships are purpose-built expedition vessels that sail to the farthest reaches of the Earth, including Antarctica, the Arctic and Greenland, French Polynesia and the Pacific, Asia, and more. On these sailings, guests will experience immersive exploration with as many as 28 expedition staff per cruise. Unique upcoming itineraries visit Greenland and the Arctic Circle, as well as remote locales like Robinson Crusoe Island, Tahiti and more.

Seabourn features an all-inclusive adult-focused experience on its five luxury ocean vessels and two expedition ships. One of the line's newest ships, Seabourn Pursuit, is an ultra-luxury Polar Class 6 purpose-built expedition vessel with 132 oceanfront veranda suites. The ship is equipped with two submarines for underwater exploration, kayaks and 24 Zodiacs. There's also a 24-person expedition team to assist guests with exploring far-reaching destinations like Antarctica, the Arctic, the Kimberley region of Australia, the Amazon and the Northwest Passage.

The new Seabourn Ovation accommodates up to 600 guests (double occupancy) and offers amenities found on most of Seabourn's ships: well-appointed oceanfront suites, living areas with dining tables, verandas and nearly a one-to-one staff-to-guest ratio. Guests can try Seabourn's new Mediterranean venue, Solis, on four of the line's ships, including Ovation. You'll also find health and wellness programs curated by Dr. Andrew Weil.

The Seabourn Conversations program is another highlight. Accomplished experts host adventures ashore, participate in meals and chat with guests on board. For a special treat, don't miss the Caviar in the Surf beach party. This event (available in select destinations) includes chilled Champagne, caviar, music and a barbecue set against a backdrop of white sand beaches and turquoise waters.

Windstar's six intimate ships accommodate between 148 and 342 guests. Passengers can choose between cruising on one of the line's three-masted Wind Class vessels or one of its three Star Plus Class ships.

Windstar just announced the addition of two new ships to its fleet; Star Seeker is expected to launch in December 2025, followed by Star Explorer in December 2026. These two vessels will feature 112 suites with private verandas and infinity windows, two Owner's Suites with wraparound balconies, a water sports platform, a two-story spa and fitness center, and more. The ships are constructed with ice-strengthened hulls that position them for exploration in remote destinations like Antarctica.

Windstar's adult-focused and casual – but still elegant – onboard experiences feature locally inspired top-notch dining, guest lecturers, a water sports platform on all ships, an open bridge policy and an engaging social environment. If you're looking for a romantic getaway, Windstar is also regarded as one of the most romantic cruise lines for a wedding, honeymoon , vow renewal or anniversary trip, especially in magical destinations like the South Pacific or Europe.

Windstar's smaller ships can reach ports, coves, harbors and villages that are not accessible by larger vessels. Celebrity Cruises offers spaces created with adult guests in mind. On Celebrity Beyond and the newest addition to the fleet, Celebrity Ascent , adults can have a unique dining experience at Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud. The world-renowned Global Culinary Ambassador for the line, Daniel Boulud created the menu at this elegant venue, incorporating dishes inspired by his travels. You'll also find an impressive wine list to accompany your dining experience.

When it's time to relax, The Solarium is a popular adults-only area located on the Resort Deck of all Celebrity ships. This light-filled pool area encased by a glass dome is the perfect quiet space for reading a book or taking a nap. While there, you can also grab a light breakfast or lunch at the Spa Cafe and Juice Bar, or order your favorite cocktail while lounging in the hot tub.

Other adult-focused venues to check out on Celebrity Ascent, Beyond and Apex are the new elevated bar spaces. The Edge series World Class Bar – a popular spot on other Celebrity Cruises ships – features craft cocktails in a beautiful setting. And don't miss the two-story Sunset Bar on Celebrity Ascent, a reimagined space by interior designer and TV personality Nate Berkus. The aft location of the bar offers almost twice the space as previous iterations and beautiful wake views.

Princess Cruises

The Sanctuary, a retreat for guests ages 18 and older, offers an escape from bustling public spaces. The relaxing top-deck venue is available on all Princess Cruises ships and features plush lounge chairs, a spa-like setting and Serenity Stewards, who serve light bites and other refreshments. To fully unwind, consider reserving a private cabana, where you can book an open-air massage. The child-free venue varies from ship to ship, with some offering the exclusive Retreat pool, cabanas and a bar area, and newer iterations featuring more space.

Spellbound by Magic Castle is an exciting new venue aboard the line's newest ship, Sun Princess, for adults 21 and older. The collaboration with The Magic Castle private club in Hollywood offers guests an evening of magic, illusions and theatrical cocktails in a Victorian-inspired space.

If you're heading off the ship for an excursion to Princess Cays (the cruise line's private island in the Bahamas), plan to chill out for the day in an adults-only Sanctuary Bungalow. Located just minutes from the ocean and beach, the rentals accommodate four people, and the price includes two complimentary float rentals. You can also order a gourmet picnic to enjoy while lounging on shore.

Back on the ship, adults can reserve a spot for the line's new Winemaker Dinners, a partnership with Caymus Vineyards. These 12-guest evenings are offered fleetwide, two to three times during each cruise. Winemaker Chuck Wagner personally selected the wines from the notable Napa Valley winery to pair with the elevated five-course menu.

Carnival Cruise Line

The Serenity Adult-Only Retreat is located on all of Carnival Cruise Line 's ships. Access to this tranquil outdoor hideaway is complimentary for passengers 21 and older. While there, guests can enjoy relaxing loungers, daybeds and whirlpools. Take in the warm sun and ocean breeze with a signature sangria in hand, or stop for a healthy meal at the Fresh Creations salad bar (available on select ships) for an alfresco lunch.

Though Disney Cruise Line tends to attract families and younger travelers, it also offers multiple spaces and activities for adults 18 and older. Disney's newest ship, Disney Wish , boasts several luxurious adults-only venues featuring characters and scenes from "Beauty and the Beast."

For top-notch steaks, contemporary Italian cuisine and panoramic ocean views, make a reservation at the Cogsworth-inspired Palo Steakhouse. If you prefer French-style fare and world-class wines served in an elegant and shimmering setting, Enchanté by three-Michelin-starred chef Arnaud Lallement is the perfect place for a romantic dinner for two. Before dinner at either venue, enjoy a signature cocktail at The Rose. After dinner, you won't want to miss the galactic libations and ever-changing views of faraway galaxies at the adults-only Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge bar.

Depending on the ship, adult travelers can also dance the night away in a trendy club, watch live entertainment or a cabaret show, catch a sports game on satellite TV, or relax with an after-dinner cocktail at a bar or lounge. Outdoors, the kid-free Quiet Cove Pool is a tranquil place to relax on all the ships. For even more pampering, Senses Spa & Salon boasts treatment rooms with ocean views, luxurious spa villas and other amenities. On Castaway Cay, Disney Cruise Line 's private island, adults can head to Serenity Bay – a scenic, adults-only stretch of the beach.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line has three adults-only outdoor venues for guests 18 and older (though specific spaces vary by ship). On Norwegian 's Bliss, Escape, Getaway and Breakaway ships, the Vibe Beach Club sun deck invites guests to relax in oversized hot tubs and comfy daybeds, adding perks like a full-service bar and chilled towels. Guests can enjoy two-story beach clubs on Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Encore, while the clubs on Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva include the line's first infinity hot tubs. You can purchase a multiday pass in advance for the club, and cabana rentals are available for more privacy.

At Norwegian Epic's two-level Posh Beach Club, complimentary perks include fruit skewers, cold water spritzers and a snack menu. Multiday passes are available to all adult cruisers, while travelers who book a Haven suite can access Posh Beach Club for free. Spice H2O is another adults-only venue on the Norwegian Bliss, Joy, Escape, Getaway, Breakaway, Epic, Star and Spirit vessels; access is complimentary. At night, the space becomes an open-air dance club where you can spend the evening partying under the stars.

Solarium is Royal Caribbean International 's complimentary, child-free space open to guests 18 and older. Located at the front of every ship in the fleet, this indoor-outdoor oasis (or indoor-only on Quantum Class ships) offers impressive vistas and endless views of the sea. Thanks to a full glass canopy over the interior space, adult passengers can enjoy quiet lounging areas, swimming pools and whirlpool tubs with a view, no matter the weather. Select ships feature a cascading lagoon for further relaxation.

Be sure to grab a tropical cocktail or zero-proof drink at Solarium Bar (or Sunshine Bar, on Quantum ships) to sip poolside while enjoying the ocean vistas. Guests of both bars must be at least 21 years old when sailing from North America or a minimum of 18 when departing from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Adult cruisers (18 and older) can relax and chill out at the first suspended infinity pool at sea at The Hideaway on Royal Caribbean's newest ship, Icon of the Seas. The beach-vibe neighborhood, perched eight stories above the sea at the back of the ship, features Champagne cocktails, a DJ spinning tunes, full-size daybeds, a wraparound bar, and endless ocean and sunset views from the multilevel terrace.

"That's not only because fewer people are having families. It's also because parents themselves often want the chance to get away, either by themselves for a romantic trip or with friends to celebrate a special occasion, girls' or guys' weekend, or milestone birthdays."

"I seek out adult spaces on cruise ships primarily because I want my experience on a ship to mirror my life on land – a little quieter, with more sophisticated food and drink options," she explains. "I also appreciate the opportunity to connect with my friends who are parents in a space where we can have personal one-on-one conversations or let loose a bit with some drinks. Adults with children are more than just their kids, after all – and they also appreciate a space where they don't have to worry about their little ones."

Anne Scully, a partner at the luxury travel company EMBARK Beyond, says, "With so many cruise lines and sailings, it's always a good idea to have options – and adults-only cruises are very popular." She adds, "Viking and Virgin have always focused on adults-only cruises and most river cruises also cater to adult passengers."

Adults-only cruises are designed with guests ages 18 and older in mind, from the staterooms and dining venues to the onboard entertainment and shore excursions. What you typically won't find on board are water or theme parks, climbing walls, game rooms, and restaurants serving kid-friendly foods.

If you're looking for a relaxing, fun and romantic vacation without the kids in tow – and you don't want to deal with the other passengers' children on your getaway – consider booking a sailing specifically for cruisers at least 18 years old. Alternatively, select a cruise line or ship that caters to mostly adults and doesn't offer any services, kids clubs, babysitting or activities for children.

You don't have to be a kid to be a Disney Cruise Line fan. While the line does not have an adults-only vessel within the fleet, there are plenty of kid-free spaces for adults only. Adults can enjoy cocktails, dinner and entertainment in several venues and relax at designated pool areas on the ship. There's also private, adults-only stretch of beach, Serenity Bay, on the line's private island, Castaway Cay.

In addition, Disney offers one of the best programs to keep youngsters entertained at sea, so you'll find that many of the children hang out in the kids club during the day and in the evening. These club spaces are divided by age groups, and they're typically open until midnight or 1 a.m. so parents – and even adults without kids – can enjoy a night out on the ship sans kids.

Princess Cruises Expands Caribbean Program with Return to San Juan Home Port

LAUDERDALE, Fla., (May 7, 2024)  – Princess Cruises today announced its return to San Juan, Puerto Rico for a season of Southern Caribbean cruises onboard Grand Princess, from October 2025 through March 2026. This vibrant capital city of Puerto Rico offers rich history and culture with must-see attractions for Princess guests pre- and post-cruise. These seven-day cruises, which visit more ports than any other 7-day Princess cruise to the Caribbean, are on sale May 16.

“Our return to San Juan after more than a decade not only reconnects our guests with a port rich in history and charm, but further expands the variety of departure points across North America that our guests can sail from,” said Terry Thornton, chief commercial officer for Princess Cruises. “Puerto Rico remains one of the fastest-growing destinations in the Caribbean and continues to attract new airlift from source markets across the U.S. as well as markets in Europe and South America, which makes it a great fit for Princess. Plus, there are many outstanding options to choose from for a great pre- or post-cruise stay.”

Originally scheduled to sail Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific voyages from Brisbane and Sydney, Grand Princess will now sail two alternating, seven-night itineraries, with departures from October 12, 2025 - March 29, 2026. These new itineraries each feature visits to five different and unique destinations, including many of the most highly rated Southern Caribbean destinations—many of which are not available on 7-day cruises departing from Florida.

Grand Princess to Sail Southern Caribbean Itineraries  from Puerto Rico , Visiting Most Ports of any Seven-Day Caribbean Itinerary

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. , May 7, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Princess Cruises today announced its return to San Juan, Puerto Rico for a season of Southern Caribbean cruises onboard Grand Princess, from October 2025 through March 2026 . This vibrant capital city of Puerto Rico offers rich history and culture with must-see attractions for Princess guests pre- and post-cruise. These seven-day cruises, which visit more ports than any other 7-day Princess cruise to the Caribbean , are on sale May 16 .

"Our return to San Juan after more than a decade not only reconnects our guests with a port rich in history and charm, but further expands the variety of departure points across North America that our guests can sail from," said Terry Thornton , chief commercial officer for Princess Cruises. " Puerto Rico remains one of the fastest-growing destinations in the Caribbean and continues to attract new airlift from source markets across the U.S. as well as markets in Europe and South America , which makes it a great fit for Princess. Originally scheduled to sail Australia , New Zealand and South Pacific voyages from Brisbane and Sydney , Grand Princess will now sail two alternating, seven-night itineraries, with departures from October 12, 2025 - March 29, 2026 . These new itineraries each feature visits to five different and unique destinations, including many of the most highly rated Southern Caribbean destinations—many of which are not available on 7-day cruises departing from Florida .
