110th Tour de France 2023 - Stage 17

The 2023 Tour de France is in its final week, and as the riders close on Paris, it would seem the issue of general classification is all but settled. Thanks to a “time trial of destruction” from defending champion Jonas Vingegaard on Tuesday, followed by another impressive ride in the mountains on Wednesday, Vingegaard now has a lead of over seven seconds over his biggest rival, Tadej Pogačar.

While four stages remain, and even Vingegaard conceded that the matter is not decided, he is closing in on his second straight Tour de France title.

But that does not mean we are without things to discuss.

After all, the Tour de France is much more than a cycling race. It is an event. Part of what makes it one of the most fascinating sporting events in the world happens alongside the riders. As the peloton winds its way through France each July, thousands upon thousands of fans line the route, cheering the competitors on in their own distinctive way.

To pay tribute to those supporters — the good and the bad — here are the best spectators of the 2023 Tour de France, ranked.

1. The Bidon Swish

It’s the cycling/basketball crossover we all didn’t know we would need but now can enjoy nonetheless.

The Tour de France is the greatest sporting event in the world, and you’ll never convince me otherwise #tdf2023 pic.twitter.com/092yyiE0KU — Myles Smith (@mylessmith33) July 18, 2023

Up until this moment, you never knew that you needed a Tour de France rider swishing a water bottle mid-stage.

Now you wonder how you ever lived without it.

Also, great job Guillaume Boivin for nailing this shot.

2. One proud pup

Dogs are the best.

Valentin Madouas, a rider for Groupama–FDJ, spotted a familiar face on the side of the road during the final week of the Tour de France.

His dog Perle:

Groupama-FDJ posted a longer video on Instagram, outlining how one of Madouas’s other dogs, Paquito, could not make the Tour de France this year, so Perle was called in as a substitute. Perle even managed to “growl” at Wout Poels, a rider for Team Bahrain Victorious who won Stage 15:

Fantastic stuff.

3. Pizza Guy

For many spectators, taking in the Tour de France means finding a way to help. Whether just offering support, or in the case of this fan, pizza.

A fan offering Ben O'Connor a freshly baked pizza after giving his all for Felix Gall #TDF2023 pic.twitter.com/N6Q235vRtI — Eurosport (@eurosport) July 19, 2023

Where does Pizza Guy come from? We don’t know! What is his purpose? To offer pizza to Australian rider Ben O’Connor! That’s it? You’re damn right that’s it. Pizza Guy FTW!

4. Marge Simpson: Cycling Fan

Let’s see. It’s mid-July in France, you’re getting ready to watch the cycling on Bastille Day, and you need to pick out the absolute perfect outfit.

Obviously the answer is Marge Simpson.

"Not now honey, I have to pick up my Marge Simpson costume and go to see the stage" pic.twitter.com/t3D0lMftd4 — Cycling out of context (@OutOfCycling) July 14, 2023

5. The Mid-Stage Party

The Tour de France is one big party, just ask French rider Benoît Cosnefroy. He stopped midway through Stage 14 on one of the hardest climbs in the race to absolutely soak in the crowd. Man of the people.

La folie des supporters de @BenoitCosnefroy et @AurelienParetP dans Joux Plane Le vélo qu’on y aime #TDF2023 pic.twitter.com/UXvvWQU7nF — Julien Trivero (@Julientrivero) July 15, 2023

The only reason we did not rank this higher is because it has more to do with Cosnefroy than the fans alone. But what a moment.

6. Supporters, or mechanics?

During Tuesday’s pivotal individual time trial, Pogačar made a fascinating decision mid-stage. After starting out on a time trial bike, he made the switch to a road bike to take on the final climbs at the end of the stage.

Switching mid-stage can be difficult and time consuming.

Unless some fans want to lend a hand.

Really liked this episode from #TDF2023 stage 16, where a couple of cycling fans are helping T. Pogacar and UAE with his bike change. In what other sports do fans actually, get to participate in the action? pic.twitter.com/FiGk1OHKO3 — JJ (@me_marco) July 19, 2023

This has us thinking, however. What other sports should allow spectators to help out mid-event? Imagine pulling a fan out of the stands to warm up a pitcher in the bullpen? Maybe letting fans change some tires as part of a NASCAR pit crew or during an F1 race.

7. Father-son Painting

If you have ever seen a Tour de France stage, you probably noticed that a significant portion of the roads, and virtually all of the major climbs, have been painted over. Names, motivational messages, whatever — fans have paint and they intend to use it. Representing all of them on our list are this father/son duo who were up at 8 a.m. to put names and smiley faces on the asphalt on Stage 14.

Bonus points to the son. He is all decked out in Team Jumbo-Visma gear and as such is probably rooting for Vingegaard, but it looks like he just painted “Pogi” for Pogačar, Vingegaard’s biggest rival in the Tour de France. You love to see it.

8. The singing Gendarme

The French as a passionate, romantic people. It comes through in their food, their daily lives, and yes, through song.

LA LA LA LA LA LA LA Give this guy a Grammy! Votre tube de l'été 2023 ! #TDF2023 Could be produced by @OutOfCycling ! pic.twitter.com/kcvMTXcXTM — Tour de France™ (@LeTour) July 4, 2023

While a Grammy might not be in the works, making this list is the next-best thing, right?

9. The Race Steward

As we will see in a moment, fans have disrupted the 2023 Tour de France. During Tuesday’s pivotal Stage 16 time trial, one fan in a polka-dot jersey came dangerously close to race leader Vingegaard.

But another fan was not having it. Watch as this fan — and perhaps future race steward — prevents an excited supporter from not just disrupting the time trial, but perhaps changing the course of the general classification:

Gotta love the crowd control by fans for Fans alongside today's @LeTour TT! (dude manages Polka Dot Fan while having cell phone AND beer & cigarette in other hand!) #letour #TDF2023 cc: @OutOfCycling pic.twitter.com/KGUho68gWc — Stefan Rothe (@stefanrothe) July 18, 2023

What makes it even better? Our hero accomplishes this despite holding a cell phone, bottle of beer and cigarette in his hands at the same time. A true Renaissance Man of our time.

10. Rabbit Girl

Sometimes as a parent you make promises to your children as a means of avoiding difficult decisions. You give them a task that you can never imagine them accomplishing and tell them if they someone pull it off, then sure, you will give them what they want.

Like telling your daughter that if she gets her picture with Pogačar, she can finally have that rabbit she has been asking for. Rabbits can be mean, after all, and there’s no chance she’ll be able to ... wait what?

Pogacar made this fan's day #TDF2023 (via @TeamEmiratesUAE ) pic.twitter.com/j03lJsdLhr — Eurosport (@eurosport) July 16, 2023

Hope she has fun with her rabbit.

11. Random fish guy

This is the tenth — and final — Tour de France for Thibaut Pinot. The French cyclist is a hero in his home country, having finished third in the general classification in the 2014 Tour de France. He also has three stage wins in the Tour de France over his career.

So along the route there are many pulling for Pinot.

Including fish guy.

Cycling fans can be the best! Nos supporters ont du talent ! @maillotapois #TDF2023 pic.twitter.com/6lvEbe5qmm — Tour de France™ (@LeTour) July 11, 2023

“Hey honey, I’m heading out to the bike race to cheer for Pinot. Have you seen my fish costume?”

12. Cofidis has a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell

Riders are not the only ones who come in (sometimes too) close contact with fans. Team personnel riding along in the support cars are no different, as this video from François Pervis from a Team Cofidis car shows.

There is a lot going on here, but one thing certainly stands out.

Cowbell dude.

It’s 90 degrees, and he has a humongous cowbell strapped around his body. That’s dedication to the craft. You, sir, are an inspiration to all of us!

13. Borat fans

Kids, do not try this at home.

Uno que no ha devuelto el prestamo y cofidis tocando los pic.twitter.com/d0ouHwIbSQ — De lejarreta y sean kelly. (@gurpeazkar) July 7, 2023

Honestly, that might be enough to get any cyclist out of the seat and into high-energy mode.

14. Tractor man

This is so incredibly random, we just had to include it. It’s a guy, on a bike, on an excavator, on the side of the road.

pic.twitter.com/hqayjHTIjL — Cycling out of context (@OutOfCycling) July 4, 2023

Did they rent the excavator? Are these construction workers on a day off? You know what, we don’t want to know. We just want to appreciate the randomness of it all.

10/10, no complaints.

Absolutely, positively last place: This chucklehead

Attending the Tour de France is a bucket-list item for many. Spending a month working through the French countryside, seeing some of the best athletes in the world performing at the peak of their abilities? Seems like a fun time.

You might even want to take a photo or two. Of course you will.

Just, whatever you do, do not do this:

Another huge crash that seemed to be caused by a fan... All riders involved are back on their bikes #TDF2023 pic.twitter.com/QkxrGaMhcV — Eurosport (@eurosport) July 16, 2023

An estimated 10-15 million cycling fans line the roads during the Tour de France and as we’ve seen most of them are awesome. And then there is Mr. “I need to take a selfie with the peloton and take out several riders in the process of doing so.”

Not cool, dude. Not cool.

The Americas

He's never won the tour de france, but he's colombia's best known cyclist.

The tale of cycling mad Colombia's best known cyclist — he may never have won a major race — but he's a social media sensation in a country that takes cycling very, very seriously.

ARI SHAPIRO, HOST:

Athletes who want to be branding superstars usually need to do two things - win championships and avoid doing anything that upsets sponsors. Think Tom Brady, Michael Jordan or Roger Federer, all masters of milquetoast in front of the microphone. But in Colombia, the top athlete-turned-pitchman is a foul-mouthed free spirit who's never won the big one. Reporter John Otis has more.

RIGOBERTO URAN: (Speaking Spanish).

JOHN OTIS, BYLINE: The crowd roars as Rigoberto Uran takes the stage at the Giro de Rigo, a massive cycling event that he hosts here in Colombia.

URAN: (Speaking Spanish).

OTIS: In this cycling-mad nation, Uran, universally known as Rigo, is one of Colombia's top cyclists and salesmen. He sells his own brand of cycling gear called Go Rigo Go! He operates Rigo-themed restaurants, and he's a constant presence on TV, endorsing everything from mattresses to mobile phones.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

OTIS: Ironically, he's done all this while never winning his sport's biggest races. Other Colombians have won the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Espana. But Uran has fallen just short. He nearly won the Olympic road race in 2012 but instead took the silver medal. Uran tells NPR that his status as perennial bridesmaid is part of his appeal.

OTIS: "I think lots of people identify with me because they want to win but don't quite make it," he says. Whether he's winning or losing, Uran always seems to be savoring the experience.

OTIS: "Most athletes get really stressed and don't enjoy anything," he says. "But to ride in the Tour de France is very special." Uran also stands out because, in an era of scripted, risk-averse celebrity athletes, he's unpredictable. He jokes around and sprinkles his speech with vulgarities.

OTIS: Here he is on a Colombian talk show, explaining how, during long races, cyclists relieve themselves from their bikes, peeing while pedaling 25 miles an hour. Uran's sense of humor helped him weather a tough childhood. He grew up in an Andean mountain town where, during the height of Colombia's guerrilla war, his father was killed by paramilitary gunmen.

MATT RENDELL: There was this pall of mourning over the whole town.

OTIS: That's Matt Rendell, who has written several books on Colombian cycling.

RENDELL: And Rigo - somehow or other, he came out of that. And that has to be a kind of genius.

OTIS: Though just 14, Uran became his family's breadwinner.

OTIS: "I did everything," Uran says. "I sold lottery tickets. I worked on a bus. But when I began cycling, I was able to help my family even more." Indeed, he began winning prize money in local races. Eventually, he moved to Europe to ride for the top pro cycling teams.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #1: (Speaking Spanish).

OTIS: His finest hour came at the 2017 Tour de France, where he earned a spot on the podium as the race's runner-up. If his improbable story seems made for television, well, it has been.

(SOUNDBITE OF TV SHOW, "RIGO")

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #1: (As character, speaking Spanish).

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #2: (As character, speaking Spanish).

OTIS: A TV series called "Rigo" is currently streaming on Amazon Prime. Now 36, Uran plans to retire from cycling next year to focus on his many business ventures. To promote the next generation of cyclists, he holds his annual Giro de Rigo.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #2: (Speaking Spanish).

OTIS: It's a wildly popular race in which amateurs, like Colombian dermatologist Andrei Enciso, get to rub shoulders with their hero.

ANDREI ENCISO: Rigo is that person that - you feel like you are his friend or his family.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #3: (Speaking Spanish).

OTIS: I took part in the latest Giro de Rigo, held last month near the Colombian town of Girardot. It drew 5,000 cyclists. Uran was the last rider to begin the race, but he zipped past nearly everyone.

OK, that was Rigo. And he just passed us here on the highway, going about three times faster than most of us.

He may never win the Tour de France, but the guy can still go. For NPR News, I'm John Otis in Girardot, Colombia.

Noah Kahan and Olivia Rodrigo perform onstage during the Olivia Rodrigo Sold-Out GUTS World Tour at Madison Square Garden on April 05, 2024 in New York City.

This year’s Record Store Day — which happens April 20 — boasts approximately 387 different titles that will be made available at participating shops nationwide. And the numbers show there’s a voracious public hungry for physical product, further cementing the importance of owning the music you spend your good money on, as opposed to merely streaming it on a DSP.

According to Luminate, the music industry sold 49.61 million units of vinyl in 2023, an increase of 14.2 percent from the previous year. And here’s the kicker, it was the largest 12-month period for such sales since the Los Angeles-based analytic company began tracking retail data for music back in 1991. And not just for wax, but CDs as well, given the modest increase in sales that format has experienced in recent years.

Linkin Park, Olivia Rodrigo & The Doors Lead Record Store Day Black Friday 2023 Top-Sellers

So what to buy this year? Perusing through the RSD list of the upcoming titles that will be available to varying degrees of scarcity, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the staggering amount of choice available for this year’s music-geek shoppers’ holiday. But fear not, as Billboard has reviewed, researched and revisited a slew of the titles slated for Record Store Day 2024 in an effort to bring you a comprehensive compendium of picks well worth your time and legal tender.

We’re not only talking strictly vinyl here, either, as electronics and, yes, those old compact discs are also fair game this year.

Here’s a list of what we think are most worth the trouble of leaving your home to wait in a long line in hopes the person ahead of you doesn’t snag the last copy of what you’re looking for.

Olivia Rodrigo "Stick Season"/Noah Kahan "Lacy" From the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge

7″ single, unknown color vinyl, 15,000 copies (Geffen)

Nothing beats a good old pop switcheroo, especially when it’s two of the country’s hottest stars covering one another’s hit songs. Olivia Rodrigo’s rendition of Noah Kahan’s recent top 10 hit “Stick Season” transforms the song into her own, while Kahan keeps it faithful with his take on “Lacy,” whose origins stem from a poem the pop star wrote for a college class. Both songs were recorded during each artist’s respective appearances on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge in the fall of 2023.

Meanwhile, Kahan’s second album, 2021’s I Was/I Am , will also be made available this RSD on blue vinyl.

Paramore Re: This Is Why (Remix + Standard)

2 LPs, multiple vinyl colors, 10,000 copies (Atlantic Records)

While declaring the band’s independence from former label Atlantic Records in February, Paramore also revealed that the group would be serving as this year’s official Record Store Day ambassadors. And along with the accolades, the Tennessee band will also see the digital remix edition of its 2023 Grammy-winning Atlantic swan song This Is Why get a physical release. Packaged either as a standalone LP or a double album with the original record, this new version of Re: This Is Why comes in a variety of colors and includes a Jack Antonoff mix of “Sanity,” joining the likes of Foals, Panda Bear, The Linda Lindas, Wet Leg and others in reinterpreting Paramore’s finest work to date.

Fetty Wap, Fetty Wap

2 LPs, opaque violet vinyl, 4,500 copies (Rhino)

The pride and joy of Paterson, N.J., might be in the thick of six-year bid inside a federal prison for drug trafficking. But Fetty’s universally lauded self-titled 2015 debut makes a return to vinyl for the first time since its original street date, pressed on deep violet acetate with three bonus tracks from the Japanese deluxe edition, including the indelible “Let It Bang” and a pair of tracks with his longtime rhyme partner Monty. If you didn’t catch the vibes of Wap’s blend of spitting and songcraft on this album the first time, now is your chance to cop one of the definitive rap records of the 2010s.

Laufey, A Night at the Symphony

2 LPs, 4,200 copies (AWAL)

Who would’ve thought the revival of traditional pop in the 2020s would come courtesy of an Icelandic-American singer whose sound is as informed by Ella Fitzgerald as it is by Taylor Swift? Originally released in digital form between the street dates of her 2022 debut, Everything I Know About Love , and its star-making 2023 follow-up, Bewitched , this live album was recorded in Laufey’s hometown of Reykjavík at Harpa Concert Hall with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, and makes its physical debut this RSD on resplendent black vinyl.

In addition to lush versions of such early originals as “Beautiful Stranger” and “Like the Movies” from her Typical of Me EP, A Night At the Symphony also finds the singer elegantly interpreting Great American Songbook chestnuts such as Hoagy Carmichael’s “The Nearness of You” and the Cole Porter standard “Everytime We Say Goodbye” as well. Stunning.

Wilco, The Whole Love: Expanded Edition

3 LPs, 4,500 copies (dBPM)

Originally released in 2011, Wilco’s eighth album was the first one released on the band’s own label (dBPM Records), and one of the very best studio endeavors in its stacked catalog, serving as a spiritual cousin of sorts to the group’s 1999 pop masterpiece Summerteeth in tone and texture. This RSD edition of The Whole Love expands the album into a three-LP set that contains all of the bonus tracks from the original deluxe edition of the 12-track LP, including their cover of Nick Lowe’s “I Love My Label” and the motorik-esque instrumental “Speak Into the Rose.”

There are also SiriusXM and iTunes session takes of key album tracks, along with a selection of live performances from the group’s famed Chicago studio The Loft, including another Lowe cover in his classic New Wave era hit “Cruel to be Kind” featuring the man himself sitting in.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Live in France: The 1966 Concert in Limoges

2 LPs, black vinyl, 1,800 copies (Deep Digs)

Renowned archivist and “jazz detective” Zev Feldman has no less than 10 new titles he’s produced for this year’s RSD festivities, including previously unreleased performances from such titans as Art Tatum, Cannonball Adderley, Sun Ra and Yusef Lateef, among others. Yet the jewel of this year’s bounty is a newly discovered concert from gospel legend and electric guitar groundbreaker Sister Rosetta Tharpe, lovingly known as The Godmother of Rock n’ Roll.

Discovered by Feldman while he was researching for potential material at the INA France, this concert – recorded at the Grand Theatre in Limoges, France, on Nov. 11, 1966 – finds Sister Rosetta at her soulful best. Armed with only her superhuman guitar skills and powerful, compassionate voice, this gorgeous capture from French television finds Tharpe enrapturing her audience with the strength of a symphony orchestra as she glides through a 21-song set kissed by such Sunday service staples as “This Train,” “Jericho” and “Two Little Fishes, Five Loaves of Bread.”

Vince Guaraldi, It Was a Short Summer, Charlie Brown – Original Soundtrack Recording

LP, 1,200 copies (Lee Mendelson Productions)

Though not as household a name as A Charlie Brown Christmas or It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown , the sixth animated Peanuts TV special — based on the premise of Charlie Brown and company attending a summer camp with typically hilarious results — remains a low-key favorite for fans of the classic Charles Schulz-created comic strip.

This limited-edition vinyl marks the first time the music of intrepid Peanuts jazz composer Vince Guaraldi from the 1969 CBS program has been made commercially available, comprised of 26 short cues from the show itself along with six other previously unheard alternate tracks from the pianist and his large jazz ensemble. Pressed on Camp Green Vinyl, this short run of the soundtrack includes a 12-inch, four-page insert featuring liner notes offering a track-by-track analysis by Guaraldi biographer Derrick Bang, and essays from Sean and Jason Mendelson, sons of the late Peanuts producer Lee Mendelson.

De La Soul,  Live at Tramps, NYC, 1996

CD and vinyl, run unknown (Chrysalis Records)

Take it from someone who has seen them in concert five times, nobody does live hip-hop better than De La Soul. Which is why the return of this wild 1996 soundboard from the sorely missed New York City music club Tramps for Record Store Day should be priority buying for serious hip-hop heads. This gig, booked less than two months before the release of the classic Stakes Is High LP, was originally derided for its looseness upon its initial release in 2004.

Twenty years later, it comes back into circulation as a gift in the memory of Dave “Trugoy” Joliceur, who died on Super Bowl Sunday 2023. It feels and flows with the energy of an apartment party, especially when friends such as Common, the Jungle Brothers and a young Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def) roll through to assist Trugoy, Posdnuos and Maseo on a set peppered with such De La faves as “Breakadawn,” “Potholes in my Lawn” and “Itzoweezee (Hot).”

Talking Heads, Live at WCOZ 77

2 LPs, black vinyl, 8,000 copies (Rhino)

Some of the highlights of Talking Heads’ 1982 live LP The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads are the first seven tracks, culled from an ace live session on Nov. 17, 1977, for Boston AOR radio station WCOZ-FM only two months after the release of the group’s debut album Talking Heads ‘77 . For the first time, Rhino presents the complete 14-song concert spread across two records and pressed at 45 RPM for optimum fidelity. Recorded and mixed by longtime studio collaborator Ed Stasium, this set contains previously unreleased live versions of such TH classics as “Thank You for Sending Me an Angel,” their famous cover of Al Green’s “Take Me to the River” and “Stay Hungry,” all of which would later appear on the quartet’s sophomore LP, More Songs About Buildings and Food .

The Beatles, Limited Edition RSD3 Turntable

Turntable with four 3-inch records, 2,300 copies (Apple Records)

It’s truly wild to think that 60 years have passed since The Beatles first arrived in America and captivated audiences nationwide during the band’s iconic appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. To honor the recent anniversary of this moment, Apple Records has collaborated with Crosley to create arguably the coolest find on the RSD list this year. It’s a Beatle-bedazzled, Bluetooth-enabled tiny turntable designed to play 3-inch records of the four songs the Fabs performed on Sullivan, including “She Loves You,” “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” “Til There Was You” and “I Saw Her Standing There.”

The little vinyl is dressed in its own outer box with a picture sleeve and collectable poster, and comes packaged in a neat Beatles carrying case that leaves enough room to hold six more 3-inch records if you choose to grow your collection of miniature wax. It’s a genuine thing.

Remco evenepoel targets june return from crash ahead of tour de france and paris olympics.

BRUSSELS — Weeks after crashing heavily in Spain, two-time world champion Remco Evenepoel said he’s on track to race again in June ahead of the Tour de France and Paris Olympics.

The Belgian needed surgery after breaking a collar bone and shoulder blade in a crash while descending in the Tour of Basque Country.

Evenepoel will train at high altitude before a planned return to racing at the Critérium du Dauphiné in France from June 2-9 or the week after at the Tour de Suisse, he said in an interview broadcast by his team Soudal–Quick-Step.

He won the worlds time trial last year and the road race in 2022, and should target both Olympic events on the streets of Paris on back-to-back Saturdays — July 27 and Aug. 3. First, he will make his Tour de France debut on June 29.

“It’s going to be something special. Especially the Tour,” Evenepoel said. “It makes it a bit easier to do Tour-Olympics because it’s in the same country, not too far like it was three years ago to go to Tokyo. That was more difficult for a lot of guys.”

Evenepoel raced in both Olympic road events in Japan. He placed ninth in the time trial, more than one minute out of the medals and trailing 2 minutes, 17 seconds behind gold medalist Primož Roglič.

Roglič was caught up in Evenepoel’s crash in Spain and also will miss the one-day classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Evenepoel won the past two editions of the storied race.

Evenepoel said the early spring injury gave him time to recover like it was a midseason break. It let him spend the Eid al-Fitr holiday last week with his wife Oumi Rayane and her family.

“That was a very beautiful day,” he said. “It’s better to have the injury now than in a couple of weeks. It’s a bit of luck in my bad luck.”

‘The Three Musketeers – Part II: Milady’ Review: Eva Green Surprises in French Blockbuster’s Less-Than-Faithful Finale

As in Richard Lester's two-part 1970s adaptation of the Alexandre Dumas novel, the villainous Milady takes the spotlight in the second half, though this time, the film inventively strays from the source.

The Three Musketeers – Part II: Milady

For readers of Alexandre Dumas’ novel, extravagant French adaptation “ The Three Musketeers – Part II: Milady” packs its share of surprises: killing off important characters, sparing others and reimagining allegiances that have stood for nearly two centuries. For viewers of “Part I: D’Artagnan,” however, this swashbuckling sequel feels totally in keeping with what came before. Even the twists track, paying off what amounts to a nearly four-hour investment (not counting however many months audiences may have waited to see how the story ends).

Popular on Variety

Bourboulon isn’t the first filmmaker to split Dumas’ novel down the middle. Half a century earlier, Richard Lester directed back-to-back features, dubbed “The Three Musketeers” and “The Four Musketeers” — though the latter was rechristened “They Call Her Milady” (“On l’appelait Milady”) in France, suggesting a precedent for accentuating Green’s character in the second half. She’s an infinitely more interesting source of obsession for D’Artagnan than Constance, who comes across as beatifically banal as played by Khoudri here. That in turn makes D’Artagnan’s efforts to rescue her seem rather uninspired, as if he could be doing something better with his time — like lusting after Milady.

In this telling, Constance stumbled upon the perpetrators of the plot to assassinate the king just before the first part ended, which at least imbues the character with a certain value. Still, it’s far more exciting to see D’Artagnan and Milady together, as they are early on, fighting side by side for a change. Bourboulon’s big innovation in these films can be seen in his action sequences, which typically unfold via elaborate oners — dynamic set-pieces designed to look as though they were captured in a single unbroken shot.

During an early escape, the camera chases after D’Artagnan, running along the lofty fortress parapet. When the young hero finds himself cornered, the lensman plunges right behind brave D’Artagnan into the moat. The effect is far more immersive than most adventure movies, which use quick cutting to place viewers in the fray. The way DP Nicolas Bolduc shoots these well-choreographed, minimally edited sequences, we feel like participants in the action, as in a knife fight that comes just a few scenes later, where the nimble camera is at knee level when D’Artagnan drives a blade through his opponent’s leg.

The other musketeers have less to do this time around, though each remains sworn to protecting the honor of others. Porthos has fallen in love with Aramis’ sister, Mathilde (Camille Rutherford), and together the two confront the cad who took advantage of her. In a rather confusing (but nonetheless exciting) subplot, Athos risks his life to rescue a comrade strapped to a wooden cross. He too has unfinished business with Milady — which remains the case all the way to the end, suggesting a thread that could inspire an off-canon “Part III,” should Bourboulon care to continue the epic.

Stateside, subtitles tend to relegate movies to art-houses, where the kind of young audiences most likely to appreciate such showy theatrics rarely set foot. Like last year’s “Napoleon,” this is megaplex entertainment at its most grand. Still, it would take some clever marketing to transform this import into a “Parasite”-style phenomenon, even if both well-made offerings have the same quality: They fill an entertainment niche that American movies have all but abdicated.

Flèche Wallonne 2024 | Women’s Race

Rose Manley and Denny Gray of The British Continental offer up their ‘hot-takes’ on an ever explosive edition of Flèche Wallonne Feminine. With SD Worx still smarting from a mis-step from Lorena Wiebes at the Amstel Gold Race, the team was looking for revenge at the second Ardennes race of the week, particularly with defending champion Demi Vollering in their ranks. But they’ll face a huge challenge from Lidl-Trek, buoyed by Elisa Longo Borghini’s win at Brabantse Pijl. Flèche Wallonne 2024 | Men’s Race

In this episode of Arrivée, Daniel Friebe and Richard Abraham review a brutal edition of Flèche Wallonne, ridden in the rain and plummeting temperatures. After his victory in Amstel Gold at the weekend, could the pre-race favourite Tom Pidcock live up to that billing and complete an historic double? I like the word play and metaphors used often to describe the events gong on in cycling. The intelligence sometimes conveyed by all involved is appreciated, especially from a bunch of fellow alcoholics.... Thanks! Chiro is way too Nationalist, and rarely says anything of substance, no? Ah, but maybe he speaks for the sands of time.... . Lionel has an excellent robot voice! I miss Lionel being at the Giro. Send Italy your old Super 8 cameras! Queen stage? More like Queens of the Stone Age Stage.... Chiro you should be ashamed of your country. I am so saddened and sorry for the passing of Richard Moore. My condolences. He is and will be greatly missed. It’s funny to hear Friebe call someone else snobby….

2024 NBA odds: Best title futures bets to make now, including Lakers, Celtics

Jason McIntyre

The NBA postseason has arrived, and this year's edition is poised to be a good one.

The West is going to be super competitive this season, with the top five seeds all realistically expecting to win a championship, and Lebron and AD looming in the 7-seed.

RELATED: 2024 NBA playoff bracket, picture: Updated Schedule, scores

Meanwhile, in the East, you have one strong squad that is heads and shoulders above the rest.

Who will be left standing?

If you're looking to get in on the betting action, here are the five teams I feel have the best chance of taking home the Larry O'Brien trophy (all odds via DraftKings Sportsbook):

1. Boston Celtics (+145, bet $10 to win $24.50 total)

You have to start here because their path to the Finals is the easiest.

Sure, the Celtics are a high-variance team with all the threes they shoot, but they are the top-rated NBA offense and third in defense. If they lose before the Finals, the season would be a colossal failure.

I expect Boston to have more 20-point wins than total losses in the Eastern conference playoffs.

2. Dallas Mavericks (+1600, bet $10 to win $170 total)

Remember, with futures, you’re often betting on the path and not the team (except for the UConn Huskies in March Madness).

The Mavs' path runs through the Clippers , who may or may not have Kawhi Leonard ; Oklahoma City , the youngest No. 1 seed of all-time; and then the Nuggets , Suns , Lakers or Timberwolves .

The Mavs getting to the Finals is definitely in play.

3. Denver Nuggets (+300, bet $10 to win $40 total)

The defending champs were deeper and better last year when Denver was the hunter not the hunted.

The Nuggets should get by the Lakers, but it won’t be another sweep.

Then it’s likely the Suns, who they were tied with 2-2 in 2023 before pulling away; or the Timberwolves, who have the size in Rudy Gobert and length in Jaden McDaniels to give the Nuggets problems.

The path will be difficult.

Will Nuggets repeat as champs, Celtics as favorites? Can Lakers, 76ers seek revenge?

Will Nuggets repeat as champs, Celtics as favorites? Can Lakers, 76ers seek revenge?

4. Phoenix Suns (+1900, bet $10 to win $190 total)

NBA futures aren’t like the NCAA Tournament, where anything can happen in one game.

In the NBA, bad teams can win a couple of games, maybe even a series, but it takes three series wins just to reach the Finals.

The Suns are a bit of a long shot, but they do have three stars. If Grayson Allen and Jusuf Nurkic can punch above their weight class in high leverage spots, it’s not out of the realm of possibilities to see them in the Finals.

5. Los Angeles Lakers (+2000, bet $10 to win $210 total)

Yes, that’s four teams from the West.

Nobody’s taking down Boston in the East, short of a major injury. And you don’t bet futures on potential injuries.

The Lakers probably won’t get by Denver, but last year every game was nip and tuck going into the fourth quarter.

The keys will be Gabe Vincent and/or Austin Reeves against Jamal Murray (who averaged 32 ppg in last year’s sweep) and D’Angelo Russell , who was abysmal in the series last year with only 6.3 ppg and two total threes.

I would not be surprised if this series went the distance.
