Is Beyoncé’s ‘Renaissance Tour’ Going To South America Soon?

Aaron Williams

Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour has been a spectacle from day one — from the over-the-top looks that have since become internet legend to Megan Thee Stallion practically bursting with excitement to perform their hit song “Savage” at their Houston hometown show. With just one dates remaining after Wednesday night’s concert in New Orleans (Sunday at Kansas City will be the final stop), it looks like the Renaissance World Tour is all wrapped up… or is it?

It wouldn’t be a WORLD tour if it just did Europe and North America, now would it? Eagle-eyed Beyhive fans spotted a social media post that suggests that the next region due for a Beyoncé takeover is South America.

According to a screenshot from Beyoncé fan account Ticketmaster’s Chile Instagram profile posted a cryptic image of a MacOS document folder titled “Eventos Ticketmaster 2024_Final” with a very purposefully chosen music tag: Beyoncé’s “America Has A Problem” remix with Kendrick Lamar. The song has since been removed but the post remains. Its caption reads, “Let’s start planning for 2024 🔥 If you knew the names this folder has 👀! What would you give to open this file 🔐?”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ticketmaster Chile (@ticketmastercl)

It’s hard to tell if the fan account’s screenshot is 100 percent legit, but let’s say that it is; it wouldn’t be surprising for Beyoncé to have a couple of stops planned in places like Brazil, where her fanbase is as fervent as anywhere else. Meanwhile, we’re sure the Beyhive would love to get a look inside that folder for confirmation their fave is headed to South America. For now, we’ll just have to speculate while waiting for an official announcement — but I’d be willing to bet one is coming sooner rather than later.

BeyHive Crashes Beyoncé Website Over… ‘Renaissance’ Film International Release Dates

  • By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

The BeyHive were convinced that the visual drought of Beyoncé ‘s Renaissance era was finally coming to an end. On Monday evening, update accounts shared screenshots showing that the musician’s official website had been down for a number of hours, prompting fans to believe that a special announcement was coming. But it was only a false alarm. They had, in fact, crashed the website — only for the grand reveal to be the next set of countries in which the Renaissance tour film will be released.

“Okay, okay. Y’all didn’t have to break my website,” Beyoncé said in a trailer announcing the 15 additional countries where the film will be screened. “But I told y’all, the renaissance is not over.”

As expected, Beyoncé has announced a 2023 world tour on Instagram, supporting her multiple-Grammy-nominated 2022 album, “Renaissance.” She also released the dates and cities on her official website.

The timing of the announcement, which comes just days before the Grammy Awards on Sunday, sparks speculation that the singer may perform or at least appear on the show. Beyoncé is the most nominated artist for the awards with nine, all related to “ Renaissance .” Sources tell Variety that her husband Jay-Z will perform with DJ Khaled on the show, most likely their nominated song “God Did.”

Popular on Variety

Beyoncé has said that “Renaissance” is a three-part project, so it’s possible that the next parts could be another album, a long-form video project or even the tour itself.

Beyoncé’s last full tour was the nearly six-month, 49-date “Formation” tour in 2016, which unusually featured no guest appearances until the final show, at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, where she brought out Kendrick Lamar and Jay-Z.

She did, however, stage an epochal “Homecoming” headlining performance at the 2018 Coachella festival — which was postponed from 2017 due to the birth of her and Jay’s twins — for which she was accompanied by a full marching band in a nod to historically Black colleges and universities. That blockbuster performance was later released as the “Homecoming” album and — via a three-project deal with Netflix that sources tell Variety is worth $60 million — a feature-length documentary. It seems possible that a future “Renaissance” video project could be part of that deal as well.

Beyoncé surprises fans with first visit to Brazil in over a decade

The Club Renaissance event in Salvador, Bahia was too excited for the mute challenge.

Queen Bey has visited her hive in Brazil.

Following the Brazilian premiere of her concert documentary Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé on Thursday, Beyoncé made a surprise appearance at a Club Renaissance party in Salvador, Bahia. The visit marked her first public return to the country in over a decade.

“I came because I love you so much. It was very important for me to be here, right here, in Bahia,” the “Drunk in Love” singer said to the audience. “The renaissance is about freedom. It’s about beauty, joy, resilience, everything that you are about. And I’m so honored to be here and so happy to see your beautiful faces. I love you so much. I love y’all. Thank you for all of your support for so many years. There’s nobody like y’all. You are one of one. Number one and the only one, Bahia!”

Beyoncé also attempted to recreate the mute challenge from the Renaissance tour, in which she sings a line from “Energy” (“look around, everybody on mute”) and challenges the audience to stay completely silent for a few seconds. The attempt didn’t go quite as she’d hoped, though, as the fans’ enthusiastic cheers never subsided.

Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé features energetic performances from across the singer’s acclaimed U.S. tour, as well as extensive behind-the-scenes footage breaking down the process of creating the show. The film was released in the U.S. on Dec. 1, and expanded to 15 additional countries , including Brazil, this week.

Beyoncé sparkles as she makes surprise appearance at 'Renaissance' event in Brazil

Beyoncé made her fans in Brazil very happy during a surprise appearance.

On Dec. 21, a special event for “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé” was held in Salvador, Brazil, where a party called “Club Renaissance” took place after a screening. To the surprise of many, Beyoncé stepped out and greeted her fans.

The singer later shared some stunning behind-the-scenes photos from her trip and the event on Instagram, including snaps of her on a private jet, her appearance on stage and photos of her holding up a Brazilian flag.

Her publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, also shared photos of Beyoncé, who dazzled the crowd in a silver sequined dress that featured a cape.

"Move out the way when the queen touches down in Bahia, Brazil!!🇧🇷🇧🇷 what a time! Thank you Brazil. Thank you @tvglobo . Thank you @idw.company . And my partner in this RENAISSANCE journey, @justeenahoh !!! You are a fierce queen! Photos by @mason.poole ," Noel-Schure captioned the post.

In video shared on X , the singer can be heard telling the crowd, “I came because I love you so much.”

Fans were screaming for the multi-Grammy-winning artist. In one Instagram story shared by Brazilian entertainment website Hugo Gloss, she tells the rowdy crowd, “Everybody on mute,” with no one following directions because of excitement.

“It was very important to be here, right here,” she can be seen telling the crowd in another Instagram story shared by the outlet.

Prior to her surprise appearance, Bey had been teasing her followers with clues.

Beyoncé teasing a trip ahead of her appearance in Brazil.

Hours earlier she posted a photo of a private jet with her iconic “Renaissance” silver horse peeking from the open door.

She also changed her location on her Instagram profile, which shows a red pin next to Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.

On Dec. 19, the “Alien Superstar” singer announced that her tour film was being extended to 15 additional countries, including Brazil.

“Y’all didn’t have to break my website,” the singer is heard saying over a teaser announcing the news. “But I told y’all, the renaissance is not over.”

“Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé” was released in the U.S. on Dec. 1. Following a couple red carpet events, one held in London with Taylor Swift attending , Bey shared a heartfelt message about the project.

Thanking AMC Theatres and everyone who worked on the film, she said she couldn't thank people enough for their support and outpouring love.

“It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done because of the short turn around time,” she wrote on Instagram on Dec. 6. “I practically slept in the edit, color, and mix sessions. The race against time continued in order to get this film out so quickly. But it was so worth all the grind.”

She added, in part, that she loved “seeing everyone all dressed up in their most opulent lewks in the theaters. The mute challenges still happening, even in the theater!! Y’all are cracking me up. Please keep that energy going. I can’t wait to see what else yall do.”

Beyoncé shocks fans at 'Renaissance' event in Brazil: 'I came because I love you so much'

beyonce tour brazil 2024

Beyoncé fans were in for a pleasant surprise when she appeared in Brazil during a Renaissance Film event.

The superstar's acclaimed concert movie, " Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé " premiered in Brazil Dec. 21. To commemorate its debut, Beyoncé popped up at a special event dubbed the "Club Renaissance" party, which took place after a screening in the city of Salvador.

At the event, which was held a convention center, Beyoncé greeted fans and made her way through the crowd as she took the stage. She stunned in a sequined dress, wearing silver from head to toe.

In a video shared on X , formerly known as Twitter, the singer said, "It was very important for me to be here...the Renaissance is about freedom. It's about beauty, joy, resilience, everything that you are about. And I'm so honored to be here and so happy to see your beautiful faces".

In another video she can be heard saying, "I came because I love you so much."

At one point, Beyoncé attempted to do the mute challenge, however it appeared fans were too excited to properly freeze and go silent as the song "Energy" suggests.

Prior to the event, fans speculated the singer might be stopping in Brazil. Queen Bey teased social media users by resharing a photo on her story of a silver horse peeking out of a jet without any caption. She later changed her bio to Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.

After the event wrapped, Bey and her publicist Yvette Noel-Schure later shared multiple photos on social media. Noel-Schure captioned the post, "Move out the way when the queen touches down in Bahia, Brazil!!"

It was this week Beyonce told fans her Renaissance film would be expanding to Brazil and 14 other countries.

Bey attended the U.S. premiere of "Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé" in Los Angeles on Nov. 25, before appearing at the London premiere on Nov 30.

There is no artist now that is comparable to Beyoncé. She stands by herself above all other entertainers, as a singular force she is Queen Bey and yes I am a huge Beyoncé fan. I've liked her music but Lemonade is an amazing album, touching on different musical genres, and my anthem is Formation so I had to see Beyoncé for the Formation World Tour.

Large arenas are so cumbersome but I bared through it, drove 3.5 hours, waited in line, parked near (but not really) sat down and within 15 minutes it started. I must say considering everything, the show started on time.

The moment I heard that distinctive beat for Formation and saw Beyoncé and her dancers come out, I LOST MY MIND (I was just screaming and jumping with no real aim but to release all my energy). I was in the same space as Beyoncé and it was a lot of screaming. Much like those videos of girls loosing their mind over Elvis, the Beatles, and Justin Bieber- I was doing that and it was fantastic. Because collectively the entire audience was also LOOSING THEIR MINDS. Just that experience like communal euphoria it's very hard to get but damn it if it doesn't make you feel magical.

The stage had a giant cube and screens and I could definitely see a little figure (I didn't have the best seats) who happened to be Beyoncé. Before she begins, she asked as questions and if we agreed we had to respond with "I Slay" I didn't so much say it as screamed it at the top of my lungs like my life depend on it. GOD DAMN, I was gonna get in formation and slay if it was the last thing I ever did.

From there, the show just kept going for two hours, she sang, danced, and slayed. She sounds live like she sounds on the albums, and she danced for the majority of the time, like she never stopped moving. The intermissions were brief, between the intermissions and the slow songs- I took a breather, because, I unlike Beyoncé needed to rest from all the singing along and jumping I was doing. She did some songs from Destinys Child, the majority of her hits (no show for Irreplaceable and Single Ladies).

In the end, after everything, I was just amazed. For one, I could have lived at any time in history, but I get to live in the time of Beyonce. For two, I saw the greatest performer of my generation live. For three, I saw Beyoncé at her peak, with the greatest album she has released (so far). When I'm old- I'm going to be telling the youngins about the time I saw Beyoncé live for the Formation World Tour, and they will be amazed. I can't wait to tell the story. I ended up winning my tickets to Beyonce online. I wasn't a huge fan before the gig but just decided to enter the comp on a win. I loved some of her previous stuff and was intrigued by the new album Lemonade. On arriving at Croke Park in Dublin the buzz was unreal. We were sitting up in the gods in the Cusack stand and we had a great view. We got to see the second support act Chloe x Halle and they were awesome. The noise in the stadium was brilliant everyone was singing and dancing just full of happiness and joy. Then Welcome To The Formation Tour came up on the big screen and the place erupted. When queen B graced the stage her presence was just electric. The whole show from start to finish was absolutely amazing. Bey has such an incredible stage presence and her voice is outstanding. The dancers and choreography was on point and just made you want to get up and shake what your mother gave you haha. I can truthfully say Beyonce gained another super fan in me that night. So entertaining and engaging with the crowd. And that ass!!! My boyfriend came with me (reluctantly!) only to see that ass in the flesh!! By the last part of the concert he was up dancing with me and all the people around us. I have to say where we were sitting was superb because the people around us were so friendly and we had a great time with everyone. Bit of scandal.... There was a girl in our row a few seats up (we'll call her boots girl) and she was giving it loads and more until..... She puked vodka all over the girl sitting in front of her!!!!!!! Now I'm all for having a drink and enjoying myself but seriously there is no need to get that wasted. My heart went out to the poor girl she puked on and everyone seen it. Soooo embarrassing. Everyone in the row in front of booty girl was terrified that they would become her next victim!! On a final note if you ever get a chance to go see Beyonce GO GO GO... You will not be disappointed and u will leave on a high that will last for days after. BEYONCÉ YOU SLAY

Half of the fun of going to this Beyonce concert was to watch the crowd as I was waiting for my friends. This crowd did not disappoint. Lots of clubbing outfit, even in a chilly place like Seattle. A very pregnant woman wearing mini dress and high heels. Very diverse group of people. But I digress.

This was my first Beyonce concert.

I had a high level of expectation due to being told repeatedly that Beyonce is such a perfectionism. So for me this was a letdown. After the opening act of DJ Khaled ended, we had to wait more than 1 hour for Beyonce to show up on stage. What was taking so long? the hair? the makeup?

And the acoustics were horrible. Unless you knew the words to her songs, you couldn't make out what she was singing as her voice was totally drowned by the music.

She gave us a medley type of show, singing part of a song then segueing into another song. That was disappointing as I like to hear my songs in full. But that's a personal preference.

Beyonce was stunning and seemed to have a great time performing for her fans.

Lots of gorgeous visuals, lots of smoky and pyrotechnic effects reminiscent of Las Vegas acts if that's what you're into.

Crowd participation. Probably a given as her fans adore her. They do not just sit down to passively be entertained. Most of them were on their feet dancing to the music.

Fired up energetic dancing from her and her dancers.

And on the few sets where they actually toned down the music and allowed us to hear her voice, Beyonce shone and showed why she is the superstar that she is.

I am a really big Beyoncé fan and was really pumped up to see her – I'd been waiting for years for the chance. The concert was at our local arena and there were about 18,000 other fans in attendance, so I was worried it might not feel very special. But if anything, that made it more memorable: the place was full of energy and people ready to dance and sing.

She was really on it that night and her voice sounded so great. She did her slow songs like “If I was a Boy” with just as much energy and soul as she performs her faster hits like “Drunk in Love” and “All the Single Ladies” (which was epic). Her costumes were equally impressive (she must have changed outfits half a dozen times) and she looked so good in all of them, she truly is a really beautiful lady. Her shows have a kind of sexy appeal and it came off as very authentic, not crass. The way she moved her body and the emphasis she gave on certain songs just made the whole thing one good raunchy affair!

During the show she gave a few shout outs to her husband Jay Z and the amazing band she tours with. You can probably imagine, we were so worn out from dancing and singing once the show was over with.

Beyoncé has absolutely taken hold as the single most important female performer in pop music these days and if you are lucky enough to see her in concert, that will only help to prove that she belongs in that role. Hopefully she will be back in the near future – I'll be first in line for tickets :)

The first indication that The Formation World Tour would be a cinematic experience, as well as a sonic one, was when the THX logo appeared on the side screens, along with the signature deep note. A few seconds later, the rotating (sixty-foot, three-dimensional) multimedia display came to life with pulsating black-and-white nudes of Queen Bey spliced with footage of a hawk flying high above its prey.

“Welcome to the Formation Tour, can I hear you say ‘I slay!’”

Beyoncé, along with about a dozen dancers donning wide-brim hats and black leotards, marched down the catwalk in true formation. Visual clips and poetry about being “Sorry” eased the transition into the track with the deceptive name; all while 50,000 people filled the San Diego stadium with screams that could be heard in Mexico. And as if Bey couldn’t express her discontent with her own two hands, she instructed her dance troupe to line up behind her with arms outstretched; providing an octopus illusion of middle fingers in the air while she told that “boy bye,” before interjecting an acapella version of “Kitty Kat” in between the hook and the famous last verse about “Becky with the good hair.”

Beyoncé + Jay Z is the concert experience you think of when you think of the ultimate arena concert experiences. It's the full package - amazing choreography, costume changes every few minutes, stage effects and of course, hit song after hit song. Although as a whole it's an extraordinary, confident show, it is very clear that Beyoncé drives 80% of the action - although Jay-Z is very good, there's nowhere near the same amount of energy or showmanship that makes Beyoncé's songs so exciting.

Even at over 2 hours in duration, the show only provides a sample of their formidable discographies - but the selection is solid. You won't get the 10-minute long "Single Ladies" jam you've dreamed of, but even the nods to songs like this and "Countdown" are unique and memorable.

So in all, this is a show that has it all - great remixes, a visual feast and never a break in the action. If you have even just a passing interest in the B+JZ duo, you'll find this an incredibly enjoyable night out.

I was really looking forward to this show, I've been waiting for years to see Beyoncé. I purchased standing tickets, and yes, I expected that I won't be able to see much of her. What I didn't expect was the drunk people squeezing in front of me after queuing for 1,5hours, and people covering even the little view I had out with their phones to take videos. But even that I can deal with, although it made me sad. What really disappointed me was the sound. Maybe it's just me, I don't know, but unfortunately her voice didn't come through clearly. I could have dealt with all the other things if it was a fantastic audio experience, but I am very very sad to say it wasn't. Beyoncé was amazing of course, but somehow the entire experience is more a negative. I can't even believe I am saying this as I was really excited and convinced I was gonna have a great time, as it's B, she is a perfectionist, sound can't go wrong. It did, I'm sorry. Maybe next time will be better.

I really love Beyoncé so this was honestly the best night of my entire life. My friend and I were lucky enough and got there early enough to be in the second row in Gold Circle 1 so we were really close. I am quite short so I struggled to see her on the main stage but the 'Monolith' was massive so I could watch her and the visuals on that. She did spend quite a bit of time on the second stage and the runway which was quite disappointing but we could watch the whole thing on the 'Monolith' so that was okay. Amazing band, amazing dancers, amazing crew, amazing visuals - so many talented people made this show what it was. Overall, it was honestly an amazing show, she is such a talented performer and I would definitely pay that to see her again - hopefully soon! 10/10

The On The Run 2 tour was amazing with great performances by Beyoncé and Jay-Z. There were obviously large queues to get in early on and the standing pitch was very busy (unsupisingly). However, although Beyoncé’s performance was incredible and full of energy and voice of an angel, Jay-Z had a completely different vibe. I felt that their music did compliment eachother but Jay-Z’s performance didn’t seem as energetic or engaging as Beyoncé. I was hoping to hear a lot of Beyoncé’s ‘Lemonade’ album but unfortunately only 2-3 songs came up from that album. Their collaborative songs were very good I.e Crazy in love, Drunk in love and Deja Vu. In the whole, I had a great experience and though Beyoncé was amazing and proved herself of being Queen B!

A very EPIC show!!! The opening act were pretty good and they managed not to lose my interest. The seating was amazing! We were right near the stage. The seats that they give are kind of uncomfortable though. The Mercedes Benz Stadium is a very nice venue with friendly vendors and staff. Traffic wasn’t too bad as long as you know how to get around the main crowd. Jay Z and Beyoncé put on a SHOW!!! The vibes that you get when at a Beyoncé concert is always great. I would highly recommend anyone who appreciates music, good dancing, a performance, and loves Beyoncé should definitely see Beyoncé in concert at least once in their lifetime. Wonderful show and can’t wait for her to come back out!

Beyoncé Made a Surprise Appearance in Brazil

Portrait of Olivia Craighead

For most people, the week before the holiday break is a wash. You might be “at work,” but how much are you doing, really? However, most people are not Beyoncé, who flew to Brazil on Thursday just to surprise fans at a premiere screening of Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé . One thing about Virgos, they’re gonna be working on December 21.

Beyoncé showed up at a convention center in Salvador, Bahia, and did her best to talk over the deafening screams of her Brazilian fans. In a video compilation on TMZ , you can hear her say, “I came because I love you so much.”

While there were no South American stops on the actual Renaissance tour , Beyoncé did try to bring some of the fun to the Brazilian crowd. She attempted to do the mute challenge with her fans, but they were too excited to be silent.

Can you blame them? Beyoncé has not been to Brazil in ten years. The last time she was in the country she got dragged offstage by a shirtless man, so I imagine they’re glad she came back at all. They missed her! Judging by the photo dump she posted to Instagram — in which she throws up the deuces in the private jet, poses with the Brazilian flag, and lays down in the private jet — she missed them, too.

Why Beyoncé Fans Are Asking Her to Hold Off on Announcing a Cowboy Carter Tour

R umors that Beyoncé will announce a tour to support her eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter , have been swirling online since the project came out last week. And though the singer has not announced plans for a tour as yet, the speculation has many fans already anticipating steep ticket prices.

“BRB gonna apply for a new credit card,” wrote one person on X in response to a post from a pop culture account that suggests Beyoncé will announce a tour on Friday. “I mean, we don’t have money, but we will be there,” wrote another.

While there has been no official announcement of a new tour, the singer’s most followed fan accounts fueled rumors on Thursday by sharing a link on to a site called BeenCountry.com, which takes users to a page of photos of Beyoncé and one of her mother when she was younger with her maiden name, Celestine Beyince.

As rumors fly, fans are begging Beyoncé to hold off on announcing a tour, joking that they still need to financially recover from her last one. The Renaissance World Tour, which wrapped up in Oct. 2023 and was her first since the On The Run Tour II in 2018. According to Billboard , tickets for the Renaissance Tour ranged in price depending on the reseller. The average fan could expect to pay around $400 to $550, Billboard reported, with resale tickets for her Houston show going for as low as $279.

“NO TOUR UNTIL 2025,” one post said, and it was met with support from other commenters. “I ain’t going to the cowboy carter tour y'all,” another post says, “I thought I had more time. I thought I had more time.”

Another person joked that they wouldn’t be able to eat real food because they knew the concert would be expensive. According to Billboard , the Renaissance Tour tickets ranged in price depending on the reseller. They report that the average fan could expect to pay around $400 to $550, with resale tickets for her Houston show going for as low as $279.

The rumors of a new tour are still unfounded, but not impossible—although it would come faster than Beyoncé’s announcement for the Renaissance World Tour, which arrived several months after she released the album in 2022. It would not be unlike Beyoncé to have a few tricks up her sleeve, some that delight her fans—and some that throw them into a frenzy.

Beyoncé Announces Renaissance World Tour

The star’s first solo tour since 2016 will start May 10 in Stockholm.

  • Share full article

Beyoncé smiles widely at the Grammys podium, wearing a black dress with a plunging neckline.

By Joe Coscarelli

For the first time since 2016 — a world before Beychella , Covid-19 and “Renaissance” — Beyoncé will headline a solo tour, the singer announced in a social media post on Wednesday.

Beginning on May 10 in Stockholm, and continuing in Europe through June before coming to North America, the Renaissance World Tour, in support of her seventh solo album, will run for at least 40 dates, largely in stadiums, according to dates posted to Beyoncé’s website . The tour includes one night at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey (July 29) and one at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. (Sept. 2) amid stops in Chicago, Philadelphia, Toronto, Atlanta, Phoenix and Miami.

Limited tickets for certain tour dates will go on sale beginning Monday for members of Beyoncé’s BeyHive fan club, followed by the staggered release of additional tickets by market, using a complex registration system for various tiers of buyer.

The tour, produced by Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment and promoted by Live Nation, will use Ticketmaster’s Verified Fan system , which aims to limit bots and professional scalpers, marking one of the first major tests for Ticketmaster since extraordinary demand for early tickets to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour last year led to fan backlash and regulatory scrutiny . At a Senate Judiciary hearing last month spurred by the botched presale, artists, fans and politicians cast Live Nation Entertainment, the concert industry giant that owns Ticketmaster, as a monopoly that hinders competition and harms consumers.

Beyoncé’s shows will be the singer’s first live events available to the public since the On the Run II tour with her husband, Jay-Z, in 2018, tied to the surprise release of a joint album, “Everything Is Love,” by the duo billed as the Carters. Beyoncé last toured alone behind her previous solo album, “Lemonade,” in 2016. Two years later, she headlined the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

That show — which went on to be released as “Homecoming” (2019), a live album and concert film — was called “rich with history, potently political and visually grand” in a review by the New York Times critic Jon Caramanica. “By turns uproarious, rowdy, and lush. A gobsmacking marvel of choreography and musical direction.”

In the years since, Beyoncé has surfaced intermittently, including with songs like “Black Parade,” which won a Grammy Award for best R&B performance, and “Be Alive,” which appeared in the movie “King Richard” and was nominated for an Oscar. Last year, in a taped performance, Beyoncé performed the song at the 94th annual Academy Awards.

But the singer made a return to the pop mainstream in earnest with the July 2022 release of “Renaissance,” a dance-floor-oriented album that she said was inspired by the L.G.B.T.Q. community and has spawned hits like “Break My Soul” and “Cuff It.” At the Grammy Awards on Sunday, Beyoncé is nominated nine times , with a chance to become the most-awarded artist in history.

Upon its release, the singer called “Renaissance” part of a “three act project” that she recorded during the pandemic. “My intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgment,” she wrote of the album, which was billed as Act I. “A place to be free of perfectionism and overthinking. A place to scream, release, feel freedom.”

Major music touring has largely recovered, especially at its highest levels, since the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the industry trade publication Pollstar , touring grossed a record-setting $6.28 billion last year, up more than 13 percent from 2019, due in part to pent-up fan demand, inflation and major acts like Bad Bunny, Elton John and Harry Styles.

In addition to Beyoncé’s shows, this year will see blockbuster tours from artists including Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Metallica, Morgan Wallen and Madonna.

Last month, Beyoncé proved more polarizing than usual when she headlined the grand opening of a luxury hotel in Dubai, performing for an invite-only collection of guests, including influencers and journalists.

While some fans decried the optics of taking a major payday in a place that criminalizes homosexuality — “Beyoncé’s Dubai performance isn’t just an affront to LGBTQ+ fans, but workers’ rights in the UAE,” The Guardian declared — others noted that the singer’s set list did not yet include songs from “Renaissance.”

An earlier version of this article misstated the year Beyoncé headlined Coachella. It was 2018, not 2016.

Beyoncé also attempted to do the mute challenge, where the audience is supposed to get quiet when she says, “Look around, everybody on mute,” but fans appeared to be too excited about seeing “Queen Bey” herself.

Following the event, the singer’s publicist Yvette Noel-Schure also took to Instagram to share photos of Beyoncé, stunning in a silver sequined dress, adding in the caption, “Move out the way when the queen touches down in Bahia, Brazil!! what a time! Thank you Brazil.”

Before the event, the “Cuff It” singer teased fans by posting a photo of a private jet with her Renaissance silver horse peeking its head out the door on her Instagram Story, as well as changing her location on her social media profile to Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.

Earlier this week, Beyoncé revealed to fans that “the renaissance is not over,” and her concert film tour was being extended to 15 additional countries , including Brazil.

The announcement came after the singer attended the Los Angeles premiere of Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé at a star-studded event in Beverly Hills at the end of November. A few days later, she had the London premiere , which saw Taylor Swift also in attendance.

The concert movie was officially released in the U.S. on Dec. 1.

Beyoncé performs during the opening night of the Renaissance World Tour on 10 May at Friends Arena in Stockholm, Sweden

Beyoncé: Renaissance World Tour review – a dizzying three-hour spectacular

Friends Arena, Stockholm Queen Bey’s first solo headline tour in seven years is a lavish leap forward for live entertainment, dripping with sci-fi disco decadence, sex and Black pride

E ven without Taylor Swift’s Ticketmaster-melting Eras Tour nipping at her heels, it wouldn’t do for a star as compulsively ambitious as Beyoncé to merely protect her status as the greatest pop show on Earth. Not when her first solo headline tour since 2016 could instead push 21st-century live entertainment another lavish leap forward.

Titled after the Texan’s disco glitter bomb post-pandemic party album of the same name , Renaissance is a monster blockbuster concert experience on a different plane. Fifty-seven stadium dates globally, starting in Stockholm, are projected to gross as much as £1.9bn ($2.4bn) by the time the tour ends in New Orleans late September. Dripping with sci-fi disco decadence, sex, body positivity and feminine Black pride, the near three-hour spectacular plays out in front, behind and, at times, inside a football-pitch-wide high-definition video screen designed to assault the senses at dizzying scale.

The BeyHive, as Beyoncé’s fans collectively style themselves, are buzzing pre-show as they flood into the venue from around the world for their first chance proper to see their queen live since 2018’s On the Run II co-headliner with Mr B, Jay-Z. Dressed head to toe in official tour merch, including a cap and hoodie both emblazoned with the word “THIQUE”, Mykwain Gainey has been to 20 Beyoncé shows over the past two decades and has spent nearly £2,000 to fly here from New York. “To see her transcend, and become what she has become, especially as a Black woman, is exciting,” he enthuses.

Beyoncé in Stockholm on Wednesday. With many of the show’s 36 songs abridged, the tempo was relentless.

Brazilian Yhes Bezerra wears a spangly cowboy hat like the one sported by Beyoncé in the tour poster, except theirs is homemade; sticking on the thousands of tiny mirror panels took nine hours. They were determined to come to the opening night to avoid social media spoilers about what to expect. “I want everything to be a surprise,” Bezerra smiles.

Beyoncé appears first in a video cut scene, laid out luxuriously across the giant screen semi-naked in dimensions big enough to be visible from space. And yet, once she emerges in the flesh – all sequins, shoulder pads and that megawatt smile, drinking in the crowd’s screams – she begins disarmingly with a slew of her rawest soul songs. By the second, Flaws and All, she already appears to be fighting back tears, whether of release or gratitude or both. It’s an opening that seems designed to strip away artifice, if only to provide some sharp contrast for the heavily technologically augmented spectacle about to follow.

Harking back to early house and techno and the ecstatic utopia of the dancefloor, a segment dedicated to the Renaissance album ensues with Beyoncé done up something akin to the Maschinenmensch in Metropolis. She grinds with a dozen backing dancers to the jittery reggaeton of her boss bitch mission statement I’m That Girl, then dances with some actual robots (a pair of mechanical arms) during Cosy. Were all that not semi-hallucinogenic enough, Alien Superstar interpolates narcissistic anthem I’m Too Sexy by 90s dance-pop twosome Right Said Fred.

Beyoncé performing on Wednesday

With many of the setlist’s whopping 36 songs abridged, the tempo is relentless. Blink and you’ll miss dancers popping out of the stage like champagne corks, or Beyoncé’s powerhouse band getting wheeled into occasional view on a tall stepped riser (shades of Beychella), such as during Chic-style feelgood funk workout Cuff It. “Y’all having a good time, Stockholm?” our host inquires, wiping an imperceptible bead of sweat from her brow. “Me too.”

Black Parade finds Beyoncé cruising the stage atop what looks like a kind of lunar rover. Somewhat comically, it exits up the gusset of a pair of massive splayed legs. Later she sings Plastic Off the Sofa stretched out in a clamshell. Come Crazy in Love, the show finally gets the enormous disco ball it seems to have long craved, dangled from the rafters for only a bit longer than the time it takes for the crew to get it up there and back down.

Bass-quaking, envelope-pushing Black power anthem Formation is a powerful political statement in any setting. Performed in a kind of virtual cathedral, horny southern rap and gospel cocktail Church Girl (sample lyric: “drop it like a thottie, drop it like a thottie”) might just be intended to provoke. But by Beyoncé’s own standards, it’s hard not to read Renaissance as a show much lighter on overt socio-political messaging than it is sheer, unfettered, mildly chaotic indulgence. And who could blame her?

In a final, unsubtle, retro-futuristic fanfare, Bey summons Bianca Jagger’s iconic Studio 54 moment by gliding through the air on a glitter-encrusted white horse while Summer Renaissance – which samples Donna Summer’s I Feel Love – blares. The disco history references may or may not be landing with the mostly young BeyHive, but that’s not really the point. By rewiring dance music past in a sensory overload of truly stunning ambition and stamina, Beyoncé is writing some history of her own.

Beyoncé Fuels Tour Rumors With "Been Country" Website

If Beyoncé is going to do anything, it’s wage war on our wallets with a surprise announcement. So, when the “ 16 CARRIAGES ” singer unveiled “Been Country,” a new website landing page, fans immediately saw it as a subtle confirmation of a rumored tour and joined forces, begging her to relax and delay it until 2025.

One fan wrote , “Beyoncé I beg.. my pockets are empty.” Another tweeted a video of Angela Bassett from Waiting To Exhale where she questioned, “What am I supposed to do for money?” Scottie Beam reiterated , “We just paid rent @Beyonce” as someone else offered alternative options. “A deluxe ….. a skincare line …… cecred plus ….. cowboy lingerie ….. idc JUST PLEASE DONT LET THIS BE AN ANNOUNCEMENT FOR TOUR,” they wrote .

Initially, the “Been Country” site redirected visitors to a list of the RENAISSANCE: A Film By Beyoncé credits. Now, it’s a splash page featuring Bey in an American flag get-up, a photo of a young Celestine Beyince aka Mama Tina, a picture of a young Bey performing at the Texas Sweetheart Pageant, a banjo, and the following quote: “This ain’t a country album. This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album.”

The-Dream tweeted about the anticipated tour on March 30, writing, “So proud! BB Let’s Go. This tour bout to B’ Incredible!” Upon the release of COWBOY CARTER , Bey’s dance captain Amari Marshall further fueled rumors of a tour with an Instagram post that reads, “The Boss has done it again. It's about to be a KNTRY Summer.”

Thus far, the new website aligned with the release of Bey’s new single, “ TEXAS HOLD ‘EM (PONY UP REMIX) .” The tour section of the Houston native’s official website (see above) currently houses all things from the RENAISSANCE World Tour including its credits, the remaining merchandise on Amazon, the film trailers, and photos organized by city.

Black Artists Featured on Beyoncé's 'Cowboy Carter' Celebrated With Los Angeles Billboard

Trending on billboard.

1. We once again have a new high-water mark for a 2024 first week with the 407,000 units moved by Cowboy Carter in its first frame — a solid 75k higher than the 332,000 moved by Renaissance in its debut week. What do you think is the biggest reason behind the superior first-week number for Beyoncé’s latest?

Kyle Denis : The biggest reason is the same as the one I gave when we broke down the massive streaming debut she garnered with Cowboy Carter lead single “Texas Hold ‘Em” a few weeks ago — Beyoncé is finally playing ball with new solo music after completing her transition to the streaming era. Renaissance’s numbers, while nothing to scoff at, were indicative of its circumstances — Beyoncé’s first solo studio album to receive a simultaneous wide release across all major streaming platforms. Now that Renaissance has run its course and done the job of introducing Queen Bey’s new music to younger streaming audiences, Cowboy Carter is riding off into the sunset off the back of that foundation. Couple that with both the natural curiosity of an artist like Beyoncé delving into country music and the current commercial power of that genre, and you’re left with Cowboy Carter’s robust first-week units total.

Taylor Mims : There was a lot more build up and marketing for Cowboy Carter than there was for Renaissance . We had the Verizon announcement, as well as two lead singles that really set the tone. There is no greater marketing than a single as good as “Texas Hold ‘Em.” The song was a great encapsulation of country music, made for brilliant line dancing videos and has been on repeat for months. While people might have been hesitant to listen to dance music or trust Beyoncé in a non-pop/R&B space, she proved that she can take on just about anything with Renaissance and even more fans were onboard for round two with Cowboy Carter . Being part of the Renaissance world the last couple years was a big deal, and a lot of people did not want to miss out on the next big thing she did.

Melinda Newman : While a Beyoncé release always dominates headlines and charts, this one got an incredible start based on the Super Bowl commercial and the drop of “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages.” That started non-stop chatter for six weeks about the album and the reaction it would get from the country community, so by the time the album dropped, “Texas Hold ‘Em” had already topped a number of Billboard charts and the cultural discourse had reached a fever pitch.

Andrew Unterberger : The hype here was arguably even greater than for Renaissance , and it built on both the wildly positive reception for that album and the ensuing, headline-capturing Renaissance Wrold Tour. Plus, never hurts in the streaming era to have 27 tracks instead of just 16.

Kyle Denis : It’s a great problem to have, but there are many potential smashes on Cowboy Carter . Obviously “Jolene” and the Miley Cyrus-assisted “II Most Wanted” garnered the most traction during release week, but I’ve seen a lot of love for “Bodyguard,” “Ya Ya,” “Riiverdance,” “II Hands II Heaven,” “Tyrant” and “Levii’s Jeans” (with Post Malone). If I had to choose one or two songs to directly follow in the footsteps of “Texas,” I’d put my money on “Bodyguard” and “II Most Wanted,” with “Ya Ya” right behind them.

Jason Lipshutz : I think “Bodyguard” eventually gets there, after the initial plays of Cowboy Carter prioritized her rendition of “Jolene” as well as the Miley Cyrus duet “II Most Wanted” (both of which debuted in the top 10 of the Hot 100). “Bodyguard” may have started below them both at No. 26, but the song offers the most thrilling distillation of Beyoncé’s country-pop approach on the album, as well as a hook and tempo that could work at multiple radio formats. Of course fans wanted to see what Bey did with “Jolene” and alongside Miley, but when the dust settles, I’d expect “Bodyguard” to keep climbing.

Taylor Mims : “Riiverdance” and “Bodyguard” seem like a clear frontrunners given the attention they have already received on TikTok and beyond. But there is still plenty of room for “II Hands II Heaven” and “Levii’s Jeans” to get love on streaming and radio. “Ya Ya” also has a wonderful sample of “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” by Nancy Sinatra, and feels both familiar and new in a way that I think will carry it further than the first week numbers suggest.

Andrew Unterberger : “Bodyguard” seems like the most obvious Cowboy Bey Bop, one that multiple radio formats could glom onto for the entire summer if so inclined. And even though it wasn’t actually Taylor Swift providing those sighing backing vocals as many fans theorized…. maybe it’s not too late for her to actually do so for the song’s remix? Needless to say, that would certainly seal the deal.

3. There are a whole host of guests on Cowboy Carter who have already gotten a considerable bump from their appearance on the album. Either from a legacy standpoint or a rising popularity standpoint, which outside collaborator do you think will benefit the most from their involvement with Cowboy Carter?

Kyle Denis : I would say Shaboozey and Tanner Adell. Shaboozey – who appears on “Spaghettii” and “Sweet ★ Honey ★ Buckiin” —  is launching a new album next month (titled, Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going, out May 31), which gives him a nice window to convert the initial Cowboy Carter boost into a larger fanbase that tunes in to his own releases.

Of course, from a legacy standpoint, country pioneer Linda Martell stands to earn the biggest boost. People know and love Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson, but Cowboy Carter introduces Martell to millions of new listeners and people generally unaware of her contributions to country music history.

Jason Lipshutz : Someone send Willie Jones the Shaq “I wasn’t familiar with your game” meme on my behalf, because, holy cow, I couldn’t wait to hear more from him after listening to his Cowboy Carter duet “Just for Fun” for the first time. I could see the song serving as a springboard to legitimate mainstream interest for Jones, a former X Factor contestant who’s carved out a country following but has yet to score a crossover hit. “Just for Fun” could be that hit if it becomes a single from Cowboy Carter , but if not, Jones is deservedly experiencing an upswing now.

Taylor Mims : It has to be Linda Martell. Folks are already listening to Miley Cyrus and Post Malone, so I doubt their numbers will be as significant as Martell’s. A lot of people either weren’t familiar with her legacy before Cowboy Carter or they are going to be excited to return to her work. And she deserves renewed attention. Dolly Parton will also certainly continue to see a bump in streaming for at least “Jolene.” Beyoncé’s version is great, but it definitely makes you want to go back and listen to the original.

Andrew Unterberger : It’s Martell. Maybe not everyone who hears Cowboy Carter will go digging for 1970’s Color Me Country — though many listeners already have — but at the very least, her name now rings out with casual country (and pop and R&B) fans in a way that it perhaps never quite has before thanks to the major bump in exposure she’s getting from being one of this set’s spiritual elders. That increase in recognition of her legacy should long outlive any short-term streaming bump.

4. Cowboy Carter is the third album in four weeks to set a new mark for the best single-week performance of 2024, with a fourth very possibly coming via Taylor Swift in another couple weeks. Is there any particular reason you think the past month or so has seen such a glut of successful big-ticket releases, or is it mostly just a fluke of timing?

Kyle Denis : I think it’s a mixture of a fluke of timing and people trying to get their records out before the imminent Taylor Swift hurricane. That’s not to say that every artist who released before Swift was trying to get their moment in the sun before Tortured Poets Department , but I’m sure that crossed the minds of their labels and teams, at the very least.

Jason Lipshutz : Nope, just a timing fluke. New albums from Beyoncé, Future & Metro Boomin and Ariana Grande are always going to be big deals regardless of when they’re released, and after a relatively sleepy release calendar in January and February, things started to heat up in March, with Taylor, Billie and more Future/Metro around the corner as well. It’s been a fun month for pop fans (although I do fear that the summer will be comparatively barren — somebody save an album for July, please!).

Melinda Newman : There was a time before streaming’s rise when the fourth quarter was the repository for all the year’s biggest releases in order to take advantage of the holiday giving season, but that went out the window years ago when listeners switched to streaming instead of wanting a new CD in their stocking. That has led to big releases dropping year round, so I think the quick succession of record-setters is just coincidence. If anything, I imagine the acts would like a little more breathing room between releases so they could get more time at No. 1 instead of a revolving door at the top.

Andrew Unterberger : Some years, everybody just kinda gets in the pool at once. I do think we’re also just in a particularly rich period for new music at the highest commercial levels, both in terms of the established A-list artists and in the rising artists/sounds starting to properly crystallize within the mainstream. Maybe it’s just that we’re deep enough into the 2020s now (and out of the COVID-19 pandemic) for artists to feel more comfortable diving in with new projects. Regardless of the reasons behind it, it’s a fun time to be a pop fan.

5. Act I was largely based in dance, and Act II has mostly come from the country world. Assuming it’s also rooted in a genre/history exploration, would you most be interested in hearing Beyoncé do with her potential Act III of Renaissance ?

Jason Lipshutz : Rock, for sure. We’ve got the expansion of the “Daddy Lessons” universe, now it’s time for “Don’t Hurt Yourself” to get one, too.

Taylor Mims : The rumor is rock and I would love that. As a big fan of rock, especially old rock’n’roll that came from legends like Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Big Mama Thornton, Tina Turner, Chuck Berry, etc. – I think Beyoncé could do wonders with old school rock’n’roll, as well as reinvigorate a genre that has lost a lot of steam with a younger audience. If she could tap Brittany Howard, Amythyst Kiah, Gary Clark Jr., Stevie Nicks, St. Vincent, The Linda Lindas or HAIM — or get Jada Pinkett back into her metal roots — it would be a hell of an album. We’ve already heard her flirting with the genre on Lemonade ’s “Don’t Hurt Yourself.” She’s got this.

Melinda Newman : The prevailing rumor is that  Act III  will be rock based and if her past Grammy Awards performances with Prince and Tina Turner are any indication, it should be another home run. She’s already shown on record— whether it’s 2016’s “Don’t Hurt Yourself” or Cowboy Carter ’s “Ya Ya”— that she’s very comfortable in the rock world, though as she stresses on the new album, Beyoncé is way bigger than any one genre.

Andrew Unterberger : We want the funk. Give up the funk, Beyoncé!

Beyoncé's "Cowboy Carter" reaches top of Billboard country albums chart

By Lucia Suarez Sang

April 9, 2024 / 1:41 PM EDT / CBS News

Beyoncé just keeps making history.

The Houston-born singer became the first Black woman to top the Billboard Country Albums chart after her latest album "Act II: Cowboy Carter" hit the No. 1 spot. It also topped the all-genres Billboard 200, marking her eighth No. 1 album.

The singer released the 27-track country album last month, and fans clearly can't get enough of it.

Since its release, "Cowboy Carter" has been  breaking streaming records . Spotify announced on  social media  last week that on the day the album dropped – March 29 – it became the platform's most-streamed album in a single day in 2024 so far.

The album also earned the title of most first-day streams of a country album by a female artist on Amazon Music.

Ahead of the album's release, Beyoncé dropped two singles on Super Bowl Sunday: "Texas Hold 'Em" and "16 Carriages." The former  debuted at No. 1  on the Billboard Country Charts, making Beyoncé the first Black woman to top that chart.

According to Luminate, the industry data and analytics company, "Cowboy Carter" totaled 407,000 equivalent album units, a combination of pure album sales and on-demand streams, earned in the U.S. in its first week.

As a Black woman reclaiming country music, Beyoncé stands in opposition to stereotypical associations of the genre with White artists. The conversation surrounding Beyoncé's country music explorations began when she arrived at the 2024 Grammy Awards in full cowboy regalia — making a statement without saying a word.

Beyoncé, who is the album's executive producer,  said in a statement  it is "the best music I've ever made."

NEW YORK (AP) — Beyoncé has made history once again. Her latest album, the epic “Act ll: Cowboy Carter”, hit No. 1 on the Billboard country albums chart, making her the first Black woman to top the chart since its 1964 inception.

The album also topped the all-genres Billboard 200, marking her eighth No. 1 album. According to Luminate, the industry data and analytics company, “Cowboy Carter” totaled 407,000 equivalent album units, a combination of pure album sales and on-demand streams, earned in the U.S. in its first week.

Conversation surrounding Beyoncé's country music explorations began when she arrived at the 2024 Grammy Awards in full cowboy regalia — making a statement without saying a word. Then, during the Super Bowl, she dropped two hybrid country songs : “ Texas Hold ’Em” and “16 Carriages," eventually leading to the release of “Cowboy Carter.”

In February, “Texas Hold ’Em” reached No. 1 on the country airplay chart, making her the first Black woman to top that chart as well.

The banjo is a star of Beyoncé's new album. Turns out it has African roots

Beyoncé accepts the Innovator Award at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards on April 1. Her new album is "Carter Country" and it features a banjo on the hit song "Texas Hold 'Em." At right: a gourd banjo was an early American incarnation of an instrument that originated in Africa and was played by African Americans.

Pop superstar Beyoncé released "Texas Hold 'Em" a few weeks ago and it features an instrument that she had never emphasized before. This hit song, on her new (and hugely popular) Cowboy Carter album, is both an invitation to dance and an assertion of African American cultural identity.

And the banjo, an instrument often associated with American Appalachian bluegrass music, has an overlooked cultural identity of its own — rooted in Africa, where a traditional instrument with a long neck and a body fashioned from a calabash gourd is clearly a banjo ancestor.

The banjoist on Beyoncé's album is the Black American musician (and Pulitzer Prize winner) Rhiannon Giddens. She's part of a group of musicians and musicologists who have been looking into the African origins of the banjo as well as its important place in the Black music legacy.

Pulitzer Prize-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens plays banjo on Beyoncé's hit single "Texas Hold 'Em." Above: Giddens performs on banjo with her band.

Giddens is especially active in correcting the banjo's narrative through her own performances on the instrument and initiatives like her video series, "Uncovering the history of the Banjo with Rhiannon Giddens: From African Roots to American Music."

Giddens, who grew up in North Carolina, said in her video that she did not initially know about the banjo's multifaceted history.

Giddens knowingly explores the globe in her presentation, with Gambian akonting player Laemouahuma Daniel Jatta as a central source (he appears at the 10:51 mark in the video). For years, musicologists had suggested such West African stringed instruments as the ngoni and xalam as foundational to the banjo's origins. Jatta has demonstrated that the akonting is a more direct source.

The Banjo's Roots, Reconsidered

Jatta's advocacy for his instrument's connection to the banjo received a platform on NPR in a 2011 report: "The Banjo's Roots, Reconsidered." In correspondent Greg Allen's story, Jatta describes how his three-stringed akonting resembled what he saw and heard from American country banjo players while he was studying in South Carolina.

Jatta told NPR that while he pursued undergraduate and graduate degrees in the United States, he learned everything he could about the origins of the banjo. Eventually, he reached a conclusion.

"Among all the instruments ever mentioned as a prototype of the banjo from the African region," he said in 2011, "the akonting to me has more similarities, more objective similarities than any other that has ever been mentioned."

The 2011 story added that the akonting looks like a banjo. Like early banjos, it has a long neck that extends through the instrument's gourd body. And it has a movable wooden bridge that, as in banjos, holds the strings over the skin head.

But for Jatta, and other banjo scholars, what's most convincing is how the akonting is played. Players use the index finger to strike down on one of the long strings, and the thumb sounds the akonting's short string as the hand moves back upward. When Jatta looked at early banjo instruction books from the mid-1800s, he found that they described an almost identical playing style.

"What struck me was when they mentioned the ball of the thumb and the nail of the index or middle finger. I knew straight away my father was using this same style," Jatta said. "This was never a surprise to me, because I have seen this since I was 5 years old."

Banjo player and roots enthusiast Chuck Levy of Gainesville, Fla., studied with Jatta in Senegal and the Gambia. He adds that documents from centuries ago show shared physical characteristics between the akonting and the banjo.

"Starting in 1600s, there were drawings and accounts of African instruments that were sometimes called guitars but resemble modern banjo," Levy said. "The akonting does not have a tuning peg to tighten the string. The string is knotted on the bamboo neck. Instruments then started to appear with pegs and this is probably a European influence that is now being adapted to this hybrid instrument."

The Banjo Project , launched in 1997, is an online archive that traces the instrument's trajectory. This site describes the story of enslaved Africans bringing stringed instruments to the Americas and how the banjo derived from their innovations. This was during a time when slaveowners and authorities prohibited drums, which they saw as subversive.

Crucial African American musical genres also included the banjo into the 20th century. Jazz artists, like Johnny St. Cyr of Louis Armstrong's Hot Five, doubled on guitar and banjo in the 1920s.

You Can Tour This Banjo Museum Without Getting Up From Your Couch

Gradually, the instrument became a staple of bluegrass, folk and country. Due to the banjo's role in these idioms, it's been frequently characterized as an instrument of white musicians. Rhiannon Giddens says her earliest impression of the banjo was that it's played by "a white man in overalls." What's more, the banjo was prominently featured in degrading blackface minstrel shows. As a result, its Black origins were often buried.

This history does not just flow in one cross-continental direction. After the banjo became a popular and mass-produced instrument in the Americas, England and Ireland during the 19th century, British colonizers took it to West Africa. Musician and professor Chris Waterman's liner notes to the 1985 compilation album, Juju Roots 1930s - 1950s (Rounder), describes how British companies brought banjos (as well as guitars, mandolins and country music records) to Nigeria. Some musicians in Lagos, like Tunde King, played the banjo in a popular new music they created called juju, which later on featured electric guitars.

While contemporary global popular music continues to overwhelm traditional acoustic sounds everywhere, the akonting still has devoted practitioners. One such artist is Sana Ndiaye, who divides his time between his native Senegal and Massachusetts.

Another Senegalese musician who has emerged recently, Elisa Diedhiou, is one of the comparatively few women to play the akonting. She released her Ears Of The People album on Smithsonian Folkways in the United States last year.

Meanwhile, Jatta has continued his mission of performing as well as educating scholars, musicians and fans about the akonting and its connection to the banjo. This included publishing the Banjo Models: The Akonting and Other Folk Lutes of Senegambia: and I Never Allowed Poverty to Destroy My Life in 2022. He interweaves the study of the instrument and its relatives with his autobiography.

Jatta would like to return to the United States to perform and teach and is excited about the people from around the world who are reaching out to him for his thoughts. He is also seeking funds for his educational center in the Gambia.

"What you know of yourself is what you learn from your culture," Jatta said via a WhatsApp conversation from the Gambia. "If you don't know your culture and rely on people to tell you what you are, that's a problem. We have to know what we are before we become what we want to be. That's why I want to make sure to not only have this instrument played the it has always been played but to teach new generation for us to know our culture. People without a culture is like a tree without roots. You have nothing to make us stable."

Forming multicultural partnerships to trace the connections remain just as crucial, according to Jatta.

"The foundation of most of the music that America is playing today — blues, jazz, country, rock and roll — all come from banjo culture," Jatta said. "Everyone needs to have a better way of understanding it. It's the reality. We need to have this understanding to come up with a narrative that everyone can share."

And now Beyoncé's music is part of that narrative.
