Catalina Island Bison Tours

Where the Bison Roam

Where can you see bison on the island ? The general population of bison is approximately 150. When the population grows beyond the 150 to 200, extra bison are culled. One of the tours, the Jeep Eco Tour is two to three hours in length and starts from the Catalina Island Conservancy House . The tour takes tourists through the rugged interiors of the island, near the canyons and coastline. Some of these tours also stop by other sections of the town in order to catch a glimpse at birds. Tours are very affordable for the great wildlife adventure you will have.

An exciting wildlife adventure with the bison on Catalina Island

The Inland Expedition uses a unique form of transportation – most of the time you’ll ride in a 1950’s flexible bus that has been totally transformed into a touring vehicle. This popular bus follows the original stagecoach route of the 1800’s then continues through an area called Middle Ranch. Here, you will experience the Native Plant Nursery and the habitat of the Island Fox. The nearly 4 hour trip winds through the vineyard and along the Pacific shoreline. This is an area with some of the most memorable photo opportunities. The tour finally reaches the famous “ Airport in the Sky ” and Conservancy Nature Center before heading back to the Island Tour Plaza.

More Ways to See Bison

Catalina Island Bison

Finally, you can actually experience bison while on some the the Catalina Island biking tours. The Ridge Route to Avalon is a self-guided tour that features a drive up and a ride down from the Airport in the Sky. The tour includes a shuttle ride from Avalon all the way up. So, you get to enjoy a fun and thrilling mountain descent as well as the chance to see bison in the wild.

As you can see, the best places to see Catalina Island bison are not necessarily on bison tours but on wilderness tours of the interior of the island. These are called mini-safaris, because of the rugged terrain and the wildlife roaming around the area. It’s no wonder that TripAdvisor ratings for Journey Catalina are nearly all five stars. Come see the island and these beautiful animals where they belong—in the wild!

Bison expedition tour at Catalina Island California

Bison Expedition at Catalina Island

The bison expedition at Catalina Island is an adventure-filled, bouncy jeep ride through the windy, winding hills of Catalina Island, California. Not many know about the herd of wild bison that roam the hills of Catalina. If you embark on this bison expedition, you’ll be taken to all the right spots and given the best chances to spot some of these notorious and beautiful beasts. Below are some of my experiences from the bison expedition I took on my most recent trip, as well some tips on what to expect and what to bring on tour.

View of wildflowers and hills

Why are There Bison on Catalina Island?

In 1924, a small herd of 14 bison were brought to Catalina Island to be part of a movie that was filming at the time. After film production ended, the bison were left on the island to freely roam. Since then, the herd has grown in size, and they have become local icons. The bison are protected by the Catalina Island Conservancy and are a popular tourist attraction.

The Catalina Bison (aka Buffalo) are Local Icons

Much of the Catalina Island merchandise features images of the bison, aka buffalo (the 2 terms are used interchangeably). The gift shops have bison souvenirs ranging from carved statues and jewelry to postcards and calendars. The island even has a signature cocktail called Buffalo Milk. It doesn’t actually contain milk, however. I had to try one, and it turned out to be a delicious mix of vodka, crème de cacao, crème de banana, Kailua, half n’ half, and fresh nutmeg.

What to Expect on the Bison Expedition Tour at Catalina Island

The tour guide.

Our tour guide, Halvey, met our group at the designated meeting point. We were instructed to arrive 20 minutes early, and everyone was there on time. We didn’t need printed tickets, as showing the tour purchase confirmation on or phones was just fine. I had read ahead of time that the guides on the Catalina jeep tours were fantastic, and my expectations were exceeded. Halvey had a great sense of humor and knew tons of incredible facts about the island and its history. He narrated the tour over the speakers in the jeep, and kept us smiling the whole time.

Harbor view of Avalon from Above

The bison expedition at Catalina Island takes place in an open-air, 12 person jeep. It does have a roof for shade, although the sun will still be coming in from the sides. Our guide drove us up some winding roads that were unpaved and bumpy at times. At no point was the ride uncomfortable, however. There were large storage nets on the backs of the seats, so there is room to securely store items like purses, backpacks, and water bottles.

There is no guarantee that you will get to see a bison, or buffalo, on your tour. They are wild animals who roam the island freely, so there is a chance they may be too far away from the roads during your expedition. I didn’t want to get my hopes up, and decided I would have fun even if the bison expedition only involved a cool jeep tour up into the hills of Catalina Island. Our whole group was on the lookout across the green and brown hills as we drove down the dirt paths. The guide said “if you see a big brown boulder, that’s most likely a bison.”

Scenic hills on Catalina Island

To my surprise, we turned a corner, and there was a huge lone bison right on the side of the road, grazing on some grass. He stayed in his spot, eating his grass, seemingly unfazed at the jeep full of tourists taking his picture. Our guide stopped the engine for a bit and we just sat there for a while watching the bison. Even though he seemed like a peaceful animal, we stayed in the jeep, as they can be deadly if threatened or provoked. Along the rest of our expedition, we saw multiple other bison as well, roaming in herds across the hills with the ocean view in the background.

What to Bring on the Bison Expedition at Catalina Island

  • Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. We took the tour that started at 2pm, and the sun was shining bright into the jeep.
  • For those with long hair, bring a hair tie or clip. The wind on that ride was no joke.
  • Comfortable shoes or sandals. There wasn’t much walking involved, but we did have to climb a few big steps to get in and out of the jeep.
  • Camera. Even if you don’t spot any bison, the scenic view from the Catalina hills provide a ton of great photo opportunities.
  • Cash. If you’d like to tip the guide after the tour, come prepared with some cash.

The town of Avalon was lovely and very walkable. Catalina Island Day Trip and Bison Expedition Tour

Catalina Island is located about 29 miles (47km) off the coast of Long Beach, California. The 22-mile (35 km) by 8-mile (13 km) island has mountain peaks reaching 2,097 ft (639 m) at its highest point. It is the easternmost channel island and officially belongs to Los Angeles County. With approximately 5,000 residents, over 90% of the population of Catalina Island is located in the port town of Avalon. On a busy day, you can see many more tourists that come to visit the island both for day trips and overnight stays.

Avalon, Catalina Island

The easiest way to get to Catalina Island is with the Catalina Express ferry. You can take the ferry from Downtown Long Beach, and it’s about an hour’s ride to Avalon. The ferry does not accommodate vehicles, but there is ample parking at the ferry terminal, and you can take a tour on the island or rent a golf cart. If just exploring Avalon, this can easily be done on foot.

The ferry also offers trips from San Pedro and Dana Point (closer to San Diego) and can take you to Two Harbors on the northern side of Catalina Island as well. Check the schedules as they are seasonal and can also dynamically change based on demand.

Catalina Express Ferry

Scuba diving

We saw many scuba divers on the shuttle with us, some bringing their tanks. Catalina Island is known for great visibility (almost 100 ft) and attractions such as its giant kelp forests and sea lions.

Water temp would require one to wear a 7mm or a dry suit, and we were not up to trying that out this time. But had some regrets seeing all the excited divers on the ferry.

Looking down from the pier we could clearly see the giant kelp and wished we could have slipped below the surface to take a closer look...

Staying overnight

Google shows me over 30 available hotels on Catalina Island including a Marriott Courtyard. While we opted only for a day trip, the rates are actually better here than they were in Long Beach where we stayed to be close to LAX for our return flight. If staying a few days, or if diving, this could be an interesting option.

Avalon Bay, Catalina Island

We saw many restaurants on the island, and while we were doing the bison expedition tour, opted for a diner that was close by. A real throwback to the 50s. They had great burgers and even hot fudge sundaes, mmm. From high-end seafood and steak restaurants to the many cafes and ice cream parlors, you won’t run out of options whether you are there for the day or for a week!

The streets of Avalon were lined with souvenir shops, jewelry stores, and the usual tourist town tour agency kiosks. There was no shortage of places to get a t-shirt or baseball cap to bring back with you as a souvenir.

Bison Expedition Tour

A popular tour, which we opted to do, is the local Bison Expedition. With a converted Hummer Jeep the tour takes you up to the highest mountain peaks and through private lands not normally accessible to try and catch a glimpse of the local wild bison population.

Catalina Island Bison

According to the Catalina Island Conservatory, there are no more than 150 bison on the island. Our guide told us he suspected the real number was closer to 90. He also mentioned that on some tours, they unfortunately don’t even spot any which is frustrating for both the tour company and of course for the tourists. Whether he was setting our expectations for the worst or not, I’m not sure, but on our tour, we did indeed drive up to a small herd of about six bison including one male. We also saw another solitary male at a distance on the tour.

Small herd of bison on Catalina Island

The bison on the island can range from 900 lbs. to 2000 lbs. Some say the bison were originally brought to Catalina Island in the 1920s for the filming of a movie and may have originated from Yellowstone. Impressive beasts, they did not seem to be bothered by us in the jeep watching them. Our ranger guide told us at one point that he saw the male with his small tail raised, suggesting he may be getting annoyed, so we opted to move on.

Bison Catalina Island

Other activities

Being a tourist hot spot for many to escape from the hustle and bustle of LA, Avalon offers myriads of activities for its visitors. From submarine tours to ziplining, scuba diving to island tours, there is plenty to see and do here to keep one occupied for a few days. Those looking for more peace and quiet can also find relaxation at the many resorts and spas. The Catalina Casino historic building was also something we would have liked to see.

There is no gambling at the Catalina Casino, it's a venue for entertainment and culture.

While we found that the day trip was quite an ordeal to come out and spend only a few minutes viewing bison, we did appreciate getting the chance to come and see Catalina Island.

Catalina Island Bison Expedition

Being our last day before the flight home, and perhaps a little nervous about being sure to make it back to Long Beach on the eve of our flight we didn’t give ourselves much time beyond the tour to explore the island. With the 9:30 am ferry (they ask you to arrive an hour earlier), and the one-hour crossing, we only had a spare hour before our bison expedition tour started at 12:30 pm. After the tour ended at 2:45 pm, we were booked on the 3:55 pm return ferry giving us just enough time to walk around and peek into a few shops to get t-shirts.

If we could do it again, we would opt to stay for dinner and take the later ferry back. They had them running up to 8:30 pm. These 300+ passengers ships run every day and are unlikely to be canceled unless there is extreme weather. If we had more time, we might have even opted to spend the night and to brave the cold waters to get in a dive or two and finally see those beautiful kelp forests. Even from the shoreline, we could see the kelp with some bright orange fish beckoning us.

Me and my son went on that tour Catalina see the Bison it was a joke dried up bushes hot we seem to Bryce’s about a thousand feet away from you you couldn’t even recognize him I booked a hotel with my son for three days we went home after the second day we got so bored it’s a definitely a tourist trap was it worth the money what they show you about the Bison are there site it’s not true you don’t get that close it is only green probably cuz it rained

Hi Alex, and yes, we were also told that on some expeditions there were no sightings at all. I understood that the Bison population is now down to about 90, and as they are free to roam around it can happen. We were lucky enough to drive up to a herd of 6 bison on our adventure and we stopped and parked for a while as we enjoyed the encounter. I guess with any kind of nature outing, it is the luck of the draw. We did not spend the night, but felt we would have enjoyed a couple of days on the island to explore. Perhaps 3 is too many, unless of course you are scuba diving. Thanks for writing and sharing your experience.

The History of the Invasive Bison on Santa Catalina Island

Published: April 15, 2024

When I think of the history of bison, I am reminded of the threats of overhunting and habitat degradation that pushed them to extinction. Yet, the mention of bison on Catalina Island presents a striking contrast to their usual narrative. On this Island, bison are considered invasive.

The Arrival

Wildlife in Europe. Bison herd in the autumn forest, sunny scene with big brown animal in the nature habitat, yellow leaves on the trees, Bialowieza NP, Poland.

In 1924, a Western movie brought a small bison herd to Cataline Island. After the shooting concluded, the bison were left on the Island. They decided against transporting them back to the mainland. The bison were left to roam the island.

Population Growth and Challenges

Big old bison in nature.

The film crew brought 14 bison to the island in 1924. By the 1980s, the population had grown to as many as 600! This drove concerns for the island’s natural resources. Bison began impacting the local flora and fauna of Catalina. Overgrazing and trampling by the bison led to soil erosion and a loss of native plant species, which affected other native wildlife species and the overall ecological balance of the island.

Conservation Efforts

Bison stampede

In 1972, the Catalina Island Conservancy began managing the bison population. Furthermore, in 2009, they started a birth control program aimed at maintaining the population without necessitating culling. They successfully stabilized the population.

Birth Control of Bison

Adult female American bison and 1 week- and 1 month-old calves at the Prioksko-terrasny biosphere reserve, Russia.

The contraceptive porcine zona pellucide (PZP) was injected into female bison. This contraceptive has previously been used in fertility control in zoos, wild horses, and whitetail deer. The population was maintained at around 150 animals , which was considered sustainable for the island.

Ecological Impact and Management

Bisons

The conservancy hopes to maintain the bison’s health and conserve Catalina Island’s ecological integrity. They have implemented other strategies to ensure this, including monitoring water sources, feeding strategies during drought conditions to protect native plants, and ongoing research into the interaction between bison and other species on the island.

Educational and Touristic Attraction

Bison calf following cow

The unique history of bison on Catalina Island seems to have drawn many tourists each year. There are even guided tours that educate people about bison and their impact on the island.

Looking Forward

Bison

Humans’ impacts on the natural environment are complex. Conservations on the island need to consider the bison and the native flora and fauna of the island. A delicate balance needs to be managed carefully to allow both the bison and native species to thrive.

Through careful management and continued public education, the herd coexists in harmony with the native species. However, this story reminds us that our actions have consequences, and we must be careful before introducing a species into a new area.

14 bison came to Catalina for a movie. 100 years later, what’s next?

The invasive species was brought to Santa Catalina Island in 1924. Now, conservationists face a complicated decision about bison's impact on the island.

A portrait of a bison.

In the winter of 1924, 14 American bison weighing 1,500 pounds arrived in crates at the harbor of Santa Catalina Island, off the coast of Los Angeles, California, where they were set free to roam the hillsides.

Local lore has it that they were brought here to film a movie, though there’s little evidence they made a Hollywood debut. But over the last century, the bison have become the unlikely stars of Catalina’s ecosystem.

It’s unclear how much longer that will last. The herd that once numbered as high as 524 is now stunted at 90 and no longer reproducing. While some argue the bison are integral to the island’s cultural identity, others point to the ecological concerns of allowing this invasive species to remain.

Now Catalina stands at a crossroads, facing a complicated decision on what’s best for the bison, its critical ecosystem, and its human residents.

A view of Avalon and Avalon Bay on Catalina Island in California

Why are there bison on Catalina?

Bison are not native to the Mediterranean climate of the 75-square-mile island that sits off the coast of Southern California.

Why the bison were brought to Catalina is still shrouded in uncertainty with several contradictory tales. The most common—which can be recited from memory by most Catalina residents—is that 14 bison were transported to the island for the production of Zane Grey's western film, The Vanishing American.

FREE BONUS ISSUE

( Bison or buffalo? Possum or opossum? What's the difference? )

“The stickler of it all is there are no bison in that movie,” says Gail Fornasiere, deputy director of external affairs at the Catalina Museum for Art & History. “The story for a long time was [the bison scenes] must have made the cutting room floor. But a good chunk of that movie was filmed in Arizona… so it doesn’t make any sense.”

Still more theories abound. In 1938, the Catalina Islander recounted the famous stampede scene in another Grey movie, The Thundering Herd , claiming it was captured on Catalina; however, a 1925 New York Times article   says the scene was filmed in Yellowstone National Park. Neither can be confirmed, as the film reels remain missing to this day.

“It's still a little bit of a mystery,” Fornasiere says, “and probably always will be.”

One of many problematic invasive species

“There’s not too many places on this planet that are better than Catalina Island,” Lauren Dennhardt says, as we approach a vista with sweeping views of a sparkling Pacific Ocean.

Dennhardt is the senior director of conservation at the Catalina Island Conservancy, the nonprofit that manages 88 percent of the island’s 48,000 acres. Catalina, the southernmost of the Channel Islands, is geologically pivotal in preserving biodiversity that exists nowhere else on the planet, including the Catalina Island fox and the Catalina Island mountain-mahogany, the rarest tree in North America.

But the island’s biodiversity has faced a growing threat ever since the 19th-century ranching industry introduced cattle, horses, sheep, and other non-native herbivores to the fragile ecosystem.

( What are invasive species—and how can we control them? )

The most notorious of these newcomers were the mule deer, which arrived in the 1930s. The deer, which are managed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), are wildly overpopulated and suffering from dwindling resources—while in turn causing extensive habitat destruction and threatening the island’s unique and endangered species.

The Conservancy initiated a plan in 1990 that eradicated 12,000 feral pigs from the island and 8,000 feral goats by 2004. Recently, the Conservancy proposed a similar plan—still being reviewed by the CDFW—to kill the island’s 1,800 deer as a last resort under a major restoration project .

But one ungulate remains unaddressed on the island—the bison. And their future is a little more uncertain.

A person who spotted a mule deer captures it on their phone.

An on-again, off-again relationship

When William Wrigley Jr.—the chewing gum mogul and owner of the Chicago Cubs—purchased Catalina Island in 1919, he invested millions to make it a premium resort destination with a vision for what he referred to as a “ playground for all. ”

After it was agreed the bison would remain on the island, he acquired 10 more in 1934.

As the herd grew, so did the enthusiasm from island residents who revered the giant grazers as a symbol of the island. In the 1950s, stores sold gold-painted bison dung referred to as “buffalo chips.” And in the 1970s, bartender Michael Hoffler of Two Harbors is credited with inventing the Buffalo Milk cocktail.

Eco tours and bison expeditions have also been offered for decades, and the bison can be found in gift shops everywhere as stuffed animals and figurines and plastered on t-shirts, keychains, and books.

“The bison have become this link with the island,” Fornasiere says. “The residents are very protective and proud of their history.”

Their celebrity status has set the bison apart from other invasive ungulates—except for their impact on Catalina's ecosystem.

While the bison do help keep back some of the invasive grasses, Dennhardt explains that they create wallows and cause erosion. Other scientific studies have attributed the impact of bison activity to reducing plant diversity , damaging endemic plants and tree species like oak trees, and spreading non-native plant seeds through their hirsute coats and droppings.

The bison themselves also began to suffer.

“Twenty years ago, the major problem the managers were having was overpopulation, and the bison weren’t doing well,” says James Derr, a professor in the department of veterinary pathobiology at Texas A & M University. “The bison weren't getting enough to eat. They were pretty skinny-looking animals.”

Determining a strategy to control the herd’s population has proven to be particularly challenging.

Controlling the bison population

Early efforts to manage Catalina’s bison dovetailed with a nationwide initiative to restore thundering herds to their ancestral lands in the Great Plains—where only 350,000 bison remain of an estimated 30 million that roamed in the mid-1800s.

From 2002 to 2004, the Conservancy repatriated Catalina herds to the Lakota Indian reservation ,   Cheyenne River and Standing Rock Lakota Indian reservations , and Rosebud Indian Reservation.

Unbeknownst at the time, however, the animals were not actually purebred bison. A study from the University of Southern California and Texas A & M University revealed in 2007 that 45 percent of the bison they sampled contained domestic cattle mitochondrial DNA .

To keep mainland bison as “pure” as possible, it was recommended that the Catalina bison no longer be reintroduced to natural populations. Instead, the Conservancy resorted to a five-year experimental birth control plan in 2009, injecting female bison with the contraceptive porcine zona pellucida.

Now, the bison aren’t reproducing at all.

With a declining population and an ever-present threat to the island's habitat, multiple different management strategies have been proposed with no clear-cut answer. A 2005 study developed different options for consideration such as managing a “relatively small bison herd” and restricting them to smaller portions of the island.

In the meantime, the bison—which are significantly smaller than their mainland counterparts—receive supplemental water troughs and hay to help them cope with   ongoing droughts and nutritionally poor conditions.

But not everyone agrees that the herd should remain on the island at all—and some argue the bison are not as essential to the island’s economy as it may seem.

“Less than 10 percent of visitors to the island make their way into the interior,” Calvin Duncan, a former wildlife biologist at the Conservancy told National Geographic in a statement. “A survey conducted on the island found that less than half of new visitors were aware that bison were present on the island, and more than half of all visitors surveyed stated that the presence of bison in the interior would not influence their desire to purchase an interior tour.”

“If the ecological integrity of the island, human safety, and the welfare of the bison themselves are given the highest priority, a significant reduction and restriction of the Catalina bison population, or its complete removal, should be considered,” writes Duncan.

Currently, no decisions have been made about the bison’s future management plans, but the issue is reevaluated every year. It’s a decision that Dennhardt says has “moral and ethical considerations” and one that needs to be both “thoughtful and informed.”

So what’s to become of this hundred-year-old island herd? Only time will tell.

The Uneasy Future of Catalina Island’s Wild Bison

One of Hollywood’s weirdest legacies, the herd of beasts lives under the watchful eye of local conservationists

Katya Cengel

A Bison laying down in a tropical setting

In 1924, during Hollywood’s first golden age, 14 American bison arrived on Santa Catalina Island, 22 miles off the coast of Los Angeles. The animals were to appear in two movies being filmed on the island, The Vanishing American and The Thundering Herd , both adapted from Zane Grey novels. Alas, the animals didn’t make it into the former, and we don’t know if they played a part in the latter—the footage vanished long ago. But the bison remained, and some of their progeny finally made it to the big screen, in Stanley Kramer’s 1971 Bless the Beasts & Children . Descendants of the founding beasts still have star power, helping attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, but perhaps their most salient role over the decades is to bedevil conservationists.

Today, the herd presents benefits and challenges for local ecology. Visitors take bison tours, enjoy bison burgers (made from mainland meat) and quaff “buffalo milk” cocktails (featuring Kahlúa, vodka, half-and-half, crème de cacao and crème de banana—and no bison milk). Such tourism helps fund the nonprofit Catalina Island Conservancy (CIC), which controls 88 percent of the island and works to restore and protect native flora.

At its peak, in the 1980s, the herd numbered 550, but concerns about the animals’ health and ecological impact led the CIC to ship bison off the island regularly. A 2003 study found the bison were still disturbing native flora: Their shaggy coats carry plants that were imported, such as fennel, to places they wouldn’t otherwise reach, disrupting endemic species like St. Catherine’s lace. The study also found the bison were smaller and less fertile than their mainland counterparts, partly from persistent drought. In 2009, the CIC launched a contraception program for cows, rather than shipping them off the island. (During droughts, the CIC places water troughs for the animals.)

Yet population control efforts may have gone too far. By 2020, the herd was down to 100; no calves had been born since 2013, and the CIC scaled back its contraception program in 2015. Before Covid-19, the group had planned to import two pregnant females to add genetic diversity, reigniting the debate about the herd’s health and its impact on the land. Calvin Duncan, a former CIC biologist, says an increase in droughts threatens the bison, but he believes they will reproduce again when conditions improve. Juanita Constible, a consulting biologist on the 2003 study, says relocating the herd could imperil the island: Without bison grazing, wildfire intensity could increase, as the grass, unmunched, adds fuel.

Evicting the herd would also hurt island residents—4,000 or so in all—many of whom rely on bison tourism. “Wildlife management is not just about the wildlife—it’s also about the human context,” Constible says.

Catalina Island, Los Angeles County, California

Off the los angeles coast, known for cruise stops, wildlife, and baja california food.

Catalina Island is perhaps one of the most unusual places to visit in California, as well as one of the most historically significant US islands. A strange combination of island paradise, baseball history, and bison grazing lands, Catalina Island has something to attract all audiences . The inhabited part of the island, Avalon, is relatively compact. This, paired with the exceptionally high gas prices that come from island living, means that most people use golf carts to explore the island.

Beyond the borders of Catalina's million-dollar mansions are the undeveloped acres of shrubbery. Numerous native species can be spotted by exploring this region, including the Catalina fox, a smaller cousin to the mainland red fox. There is, however, one truly over-sized resident in Catalina. A herd of bison, left behind after an old western movie was filmed on the island, calls Catalina home. Now protected by the National Park Service, tours of the bison herds are one of the best things to do on Catalina Island.

Isle Royale is situated on Lake Superior and is so untainted that cars are still not allowed on the island.

Despite the lack of motorized vehicles, there is still plenty to enjoy on Isle Royale. A popular destination for backpacking, boating, fishing, and hiking, Isle Royale is a bit of a step back in time.

St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands

Part of the 90 islands and islets of the virgin islands, great for hiking, snorkeling, swimming, and boating.

The US Virgin Islands are classified as territories instead of states, and, as a result, are frequently forgotten. Despite their underrated status, the Virgin Islands are some of the best islands to visit in the US. With three large islands and over 50 smaller islets and cays , travelers can enjoy an island getaway as well as take advantage of some cheap island hopping among the US Virgin Islands .

Of the Virgin Islands, Saint John is perhaps the most unique stop. Saint John is the smallest of the three major Virgin Islands and has everything from luxury resorts to budget campsites. As part of the free-to-visit Virgin Islands National Park , St. John is also the perfect place for a relaxing day on the beach or hike along the island.

Wizard Island, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon

Situated in crater lake, superb for hiking, scenic viewing, and boating.

It is no small feat to stand out against a masterpiece of Mother Nature like the deepest lake in the United States. In the center of Crater Lake (one of the USA's incredible natural wonders ) lies the 316-acre Wizard Island, a cinder-cone island that stands as the last reminder of the dormant volcano whose remains formed the famous lake.

Named because of its resemblance to a wizard's hat, the best way to visit the island is via boat tour, with both half and full-day options available. Once on the island, visitors can hike to the summit or simply explore the perimeter of this untainted patch of land.

Off the coast of san francisco, good for hiking, wildlife watching, and wildflower trails.

Situated off the coast of San Francisco is former immigration stop Angel Island. At just over a single square mile, it may be hard to imagine there is much to see, but what Angel Island lacks in size, it makes up for in beauty.

A day trip to Angel Island, which is also a state park, may include hiking one or more of the scenic trails or touring the US Immigration Station. Of the roughly 30,000 lakes that dot the Great Lakes, perhaps the most notable is Mackinac Island in Lake Huron. With 80 percent of the land designated as a state park, the natural beauty of Mackinac Island cannot be overstated. Multiple hiking trails offer ideal views of the wooded areas and limestone rock formations, including a natural limestone Arch.

The size of the island has allowed some development to thrive, although the island remains a car-free sanctuary. Travelers can enjoy many of the treats offered, including saltwater Taffy, fudge, and caramel corn, while they take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the island town. Finishing the day rocking on the world's biggest front porch, which runs 660 feet, there is no doubt Mackinac Island is worth a visit.

Kodiak Island, Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska

Large island off the alaska coast, epic for wildlife viewing, museums, and fishing.

While purposefully planning a visit to Bear Country may not seem like the ideal Alaskan vacation, Kodiak Island is well worth a visit. As the second-largest island in the United States, Kodiak Island is home to a large variety of natural wildlife and human history. The island is home to four unique museums, including the Alutiiq Museum, as well as remnants of the World War II military base that once existed.

While it is important to be aware of the nearly 3,500 Kodiak Brown Bears that call the island home, that shouldn’t stop visitors from enjoying the Kodiak Wildlife Refuge or trying their hand at fishing off the coast of the island. Plus, Kodiak Island is a fantastic road trip destination !

Antelope Island, Great Salt Lake, Utah

Set on the great salt lake, great for scenic drives, hiking, and large wildlife-watching.

The middle of the high desert may not seem like the place to find an island escape, but Antelope Island, surrounded by the Great Salt Lake, is hardly an ordinary destination. Flanked by the shallow waters of the saltiest lake in the western hemisphere, Antelope Island, also a state park, is a snapshot of the desert plains.

Herds of bison, bighorn sheep, and the namesake antelope all call this 42-square-mile island home. Visitors can travel around the island by car or along one of the 15 hiking trails that go both around the perimeter and up to its summit. There is also a Visitor’s Center near the entrance to the island that details the history of the landscape and safety on the hiking trails of Antelope Island that often double as grazing areas for wild bison .

Visiting Antelope Island

  • Antelope Island State Park Entrance Fee: $15/vehicle
  • Frary Peak Trail: 6.9 miles, Strenuous
  • Elephant Head and Mormon Rocks Loop: 21.6 miles, Strenuous

Due to the shallow nature of the Great Salt Lake, a raised highway has been built to allow access to the island, eliminating the need for a boat or ferry.

Santa Cruz Island, Channel Islands National Park, California
