Blur (formed in 1989) is an English Brit-pop and alternative rock band who stormed to musical success in the ‘90s with their traditional English style and ideology, hailing from London, England, UK.

Prior to the formation of Blur, vocalist/keyboardist Damon Albarn performed in the group Circus alongside drummer Dave Rowntree, which later enlisted the help of guitarist Graham Coxon. Shortly after, whilst the members were studying at London’s Goldsmiths College, the name was changed to Seymour, and Alex James joined on bass to complete the line-up. After recording a number of demos and live performances in 1989, the band caught the attention of Andy Ross of Food Records who subsequently offered to sign the band provided they changed their name.

Blur was ultimately born and began touring in 1990 in support of the Cramps, later releasing the single “She’s So High”. The band’s sound was distinctly of the Madchester genre, drawing influences from the soaring psychedelic pop of The Stone Roses combined with the guitar drive of the Who. After releasing the No. eight charting single “There’s No Other Way” and the No. 24 single “Bang”, Blur released their debut album “Leisure” in 1991.

Following the release, the band embarked on a two-month tour of the States after which Albarn and the band aimed to move away from the sound and scene of their debut, which proved problematic. “Pop Music” was the band’s first single to step into the shoes of English pop however failed to find an audience in either the UK or the U.S. Blur’s sophomore album “Modern Life Is Rubbish”, produced by Stephen Street, was issued in 1992 to generally good reviews.

“Modern Life Is Rubbish”, whilst failing to achieve its intended success, paved the way for Blur’s breakthrough album “Parklife”. Released in 1994, “Parklife” shot to the top of the UK charts, aided by the lead single “Boys & Girls” and considerable BBC radio airplay. The album remained in the charts for a total of 90 weeks, earned rave reviews from the musical press, and has long been regarded as one of Britpops’ defining albums.

During this time Blur developed a musical rivalry with Manchester-based band Oasis, marked by both band’s releasing new singles on the same day. Blur’s “Country House” ultimately outsold Oasis’ “Roll With It”, however Blur’s subsequent album “The Great Escape” failed to compete with Oasis’ sophomore “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?”. 1995’s “The Great Escape” once again earned positive reviews and topped the UK charts, however with the popularity of Oasis in the U.S., Blur were increasingly losing relevancy and public support.

After a year or so out of the spotlight, with influences taken from American indie-rock, Blur reincarnated themselves and released a self-titled album in 1997. Despite the UK No. 1 single “Beetlebum”, the album failed to reignite the popularity of its predecessors, however did find popularity in the U.S. With the significant success of the single “Song 2” in the States, hype for the band crossed the Atlantic and Blur enjoyed a resurgence of success in Britain. The album “13” followed in 1999 after which Albarn focussed on the hip-hop side-project Gorillaz with cartoonist Jamie Hewlett.

Graham Coxon departed the group ahead of the band’s seventh studio album “Think Tank”, which marked the end of Blur until a reunion tour in 2009. The documentary “No Distance Left to Run” was released in January 2010, followed by a new recording for Record Store Day entitled “Fool’s Day” also in 2010.

Live reviews

Blur, icons of the 90's Britpop revolution have enjoyed one of the most critically and commercially celebrated careers of any British artist. Their music has been the soundtrack to a generation and fans old and new continue to sell out their tours in mass force to see Damon Albarn and co perform the classic songs.

From the offset, the audience are excited and remain in a sense of hushed anticipation before the iconic group begin their show. The lights go down and deafening cheers ring out to the opening bars of 'Boys & Girls'. It is a risky move opening with one of your most prolific hits but Blur simply energise the crowd as they remain engaged with the show throughout. Albarn thanks them briefly between tracks but with seven albums to fit into a 20 song setlist, time is of the essence.

Luckily all the big hitters are included, a mass sing/clap along to 'Country House' nearly rips the roof off the Civic Hall before 'Parklife' causes mass jostling within the crowd. It is the anthemic introduction to 'Song 2' which receives perhaps the greatest reaction of the evening. Blur's music does not seem to age and the quartet proves why they are considered titans of Britpop.

Blur as a band is a British icon, which enjoyed most of their success in the 90s. Legends from the Britpop revolution, Blur are a wonder to watch live. Their music redefined a generation, and they continue to be one of the most successful British rock bands today. When Blur rocked on to stage to screams of ‘Woo Hoo’ by the excited crowd, it felt like an incredible moment and memento to British music history. Blur opened with ‘Song 2’, to the crowd’s absolute delight. They rocked the stage, strumming on guitars and bass and slamming on drums. Although Blur opened with arguably their most prolific and, best, hit, the rest of the show by no means felt like a let-down after such a fantastic opening. If anything, the show went from strength to strength as the band missed up their set list, interspersing slower songs with more up tempo tracks. ‘Coffee and TV’ and ‘Girls and Boys’ also had massive crowd reactions and were two highlights of the night. The crowd begged for an encore at the end and Blur obeyed, coming back to perform ‘Song 2’ one last time for the exultant crowd.

It was amazing! I loved every song they played, and I can´t stop being excited, yet. I think they really know how to make a show and how to make people feel the music they are playing, they know that for many people that went to see them, there are songs that have listend for so many years, and the fact that after so much time, they were listening Blur playing it alive, listening many people singing the lyrics at the same time, and they are there, living that moment, with the people that must be there with them, it´s something amazing that words simply cannot discribe. That´s the best part of every concert, and is something Blur really knew how to gave us.

Blur. Ah, the first thing that comes to mind is Beetlebum. Blur has a song for each mood you're in, however, be warned there is a bit of grungy, dive-bar listening type of feel.

I've had the great fortune of seeing Blur once, and it was beyond memorable. One moment you are jumping up and down, moshing, the next you and the entire crowd are singing along to Song 2. Some artists don't sound anything like their album music, but for Blur it's so point on and more! Let's just say I lost my voice for 2 days after the concert.

So grab your 90's clothes - necklace choker, ripped jeans, & simple tee and kick it with Blur - promise you won't regret!

Damon Albarn says Blur’s Coachella weekend two show is “probably our last gig”

The frontman recently suggested that the band would be going on hiatus until further notice

Blur at Coachella 2024

Damon Albarn said “this is probably our last gig” during Blur ’s set at weekend two of Coachella 2024 last night (April 20).

The legendary Britpop band – comprised of Albarn, guitarist Graham Coxon , bassist Alex James and drummer Dave Rowntree – took to the annual music and arts festival’s main stage for the second consecutive Saturday night (April 20).

And as they prepared to launch into ‘Tender’, the last song of the night, Albarn confided to the crowd: “In the spirit of clarity and truth, this is probably our last gig”.

It comes after Albarn stated in December that the band would be going on a hiatus until further notice , saying “it’s too much for me”.

“It is time to wrap up this campaign,” he said. “It’s too much for me. It was the right thing to do and an immense honour to play these songs again, spend time with these guys, make an album, blah-blah-blah.”

He continued: “I’m not saying I won’t do it again, it was a beautiful success, but I’m not dwelling on the past.”

“You can do it better than that,” he told attendees at one point, which was met by a quiet crowd. When he still didn’t get the desired response, the frontman said: “You’re never seeing us again, so you might as well fucking sing it. Know what I’m saying?”

Albarn had previously spoken with KROQ about the Coachella audience , saying: “I don’t know, it’s a weird one Coachella when it comes to audience you know. It’s hard to know sometimes because they’re quite sort of on their own planet really.”

On both weekends, Blur were joined by the Torres Martinez Cahuilla Bird Singers, a group of tribal singers from the area local to the festival’s Mojave Desert, California setting. You can find  highlights from their weekend one set here.

Later this year, a new documentary and a concert film will be released that chart Blur’s huge 2023 , including the making of their first album in eight years, ‘ The Ballad of Darren ’, and their two massive shows at Wembley Stadium .

His performance came just a year after Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh became the first Indian to take the Coachella stage. Showcasing the diversity of the musical offering from the world’s most populous country, Sriram is this year bringing Carnatic-inspired music to the festival, tunes that have emerged from the classical music tradition of South India but blend modern influences like R&B, jazz and indie rock.

“I try not to think about [being the first] because it can get in your head and your ego can get inflated,” says Sriram. “In that moment when I’m on stage, people don’t really care about the fact that I’m the first South Indian to play or whatever, they’re just there to experience the music.”

Sriram counters that he doesn’t “wear that responsibility lightly,” adding: “Carnatic music is very deep in the roots of being South Indian, and I am honored to be able to showcase my perspective and version of what being South Indian means.”

Sriram has had a hectic couple of months. Along with his Coachella bow, he has spent the past few weeks playing packed shows in San Francisco and Seattle as part of his Sidharth world tour, and was getting ready to fly back to California for the second Coachella weekend the day after his Deadline interview.

“I had my eyes closed for most of the [first] Coachella set,” he reminisces. “But looking out at the audience and seeing a truly diverse group of people packing that space out, that was exhilarating.”

Working with A.R. Rahman

blur world tour

Sriram’s first big break came in 2013, when Oscar, Grammy, and Golden Globe-winning musician A.R. Rahman asked him to sing in Tamil film  Kadal . Although the film was critically panned, the movie catapulted Sriram into the limelight. Since then, he has mostly sung on productions from the booming Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam film industries.

“Singing for film really taught me to emote vocally and not just rely on this ‘inspiration’ thing, which I think is somewhat of an overrated concept,” says Sriram. “I think there’s a rigor that comes to artistry and the beautiful thing is when that rigor allows you to output a vocal performance that still feels deeply emotional and personal.”

Although he has prioritized his own music for the past year and a half, Sriram has no plans to retire from singing for film just yet. “My mentor is still A.R. [Rahman] Sir, and there’s so much that I still have to learn from and give to that industry,” he says. “It was never in my plans to be a playback singer but I’m grateful now that that happened first, and that my relationship to celebrity formed within that industry.”

He hints at more playback projects in the works and says he would “love to work on Hollywood soundtracks” or “maybe scoring films.” “I have a gut feeling that something will come together this year.”

‘Sidharth’

blur world tour

After contributing hundreds of songs to movies, it took 10 years for Sriram to release his first all-English album under Universal Music Group’s label Def Jam with producer Ryan Olson. Titled  Sidharth , the album is his most personal work yet, and seamlessly blends R&B, jazz and indie with Carnatic influences.

Until Sidharth , Sriram had avoided blending his Carnatic and Western musical influences. But the North American leg of his tour and his Coachella booking have seen him embrace what his father calls “hybridism.” “We just thought, ‘Let’s not fragment myself anymore, let’s explore the entirety of it.’ And it was really scary,” he adds.

Sriram’s current setlist – including at Coachella – is therefore an intentionally curated mix of his film discography, songs from the album and other Carnatic interpretations. “This tour has been the first time I’ve felt a flow between all the different aspects of who I am, and it’s been so much fun.”

Packed audiences have comprised both people of Indian origin and otherwise, he says, which Sriram takes as a hopeful sign for Indian music as a whole.

“Do audiences want it? Hell yeah,” he adds.

“Carnatic music has, for whatever reason, been relegated to this niche thing, but I guess I’m living proof against that,” he continues. “My biggest takeaway from weekend one [of Coachella] was that regardless of background, people react the exact same way to the same moments. I truly believe that music is a universal sonic form, and it transcends while still paying respect to cultural spaces.”

Also playing Coachella this year is Punjabi-Canadian singer A.P. Dhillon, whose experience has been somewhat different to Sriram’s after he faced a backlash for smashing his guitar on stage on weekend one and has not returned this weekend (Coachella put this down to a scheduling conflict).

Dhillon, who was the subject of a recent Amazon doc, has a contrasting musical style to Sriram’s despite both being from Indian backgrounds.

He adds: “Once this door is knocked down – and I feel like we’re very close to knocking it down – for Indian-based music to break out globally, there’s going to be such an incredible market for it.”

“We’re only at the beginning,” he finishes. “I’m just honored to be on this side in the history of music.”

Liz Truss at the Heritage Foundation, Washington DC, 22 April 2024.

Fair to say America isn’t gripped by Liz Trussmania. Here’s what she can learn from Mr Bean

Emma Brockes

Our former PM has a dire warning and a book to sell, but it isn’t really cutting through. A bit more Brit-style bumbling might help

‘I know the name,” texts a friend when I ask if she knows who Liz Truss is, but like most Americans can’t quite put her finger on why. “Like 8%,” guesses another when I ask her to put a number on how many of her countrymen she imagines know of Truss. The standard response, in my extremely unscientific poll of Americans as to whether or not they know of Truss, however, was: “No, should I?” – the answer to which, of course, depends entirely on whether you want to understand why the Tory party is polling around 20% or whether you happen to be Liz Truss.

Truss, the only one of us to suffer that particular misfortune, was in Washington DC this week trying, like so many minor British celebrities before her, to catch the eye of the Americans. At the Heritage Foundation, a rightwing thinktank that hosted the launch of Truss’s book Ten Years to Save the West , she came bearing a “warning”. Not an ideal ice-breaker, perhaps, but one clearly tailored to an audience receptive to the frisson of the term “forces of the global left”.

She then provided a perfect illustration of how British people try to win over Americans. “I like to think of the United States of America as Britain’s greatest invention,” said Truss, a piece of comic rank-pulling that relies, for the joke to land, on the delusion that Britain is central to American thinking or penetrates American consciousness at all. Even the sorts of Americans who show up to events at the Heritage Foundation must have been politely baffled by this.

Still, it’s possible Truss did better than the other British export trying and failing to win over Americans this month. Blur’s performance at Coachella last week – and particularly that of Damon Albarn – delivered the timeless drama of a man’s idea of himself crashing into a rival and more widely held view. “You’re never seeing us again, so you might as well fucking sing it,” shouted Albarn when, during a rendition of Girls & Boys, he tried to get a call and response off the ground and the crowd remained largely unresponsive. “Know what I’m saying?” he added savagely. And they did, apparently, rewarding his yelling, sneering and eventual tip into bitterness by continuing to withhold their approval.

The challenge for Albarn, Truss and all the others who have tried to charm this particular away crowd is to project a jaunty, offhand confidence that somehow disguises the scale of the need and the fear of rejection. It can make for an odd spectacle, bad jokes and terrible sycophancy. “The world felt safer when Donald Trump was in office,” said Truss this week, and you wondered at her shamelessness – not because sucking up to Trump is unusual in America, but because, coming from a British person, even a former Conservative prime minister, you assume that she is able to see Trump marginally more clearly than her American counterparts, and that at some level she knows that we know this.

There is, however, one thing that may work to Truss’s favour in the US. British critics of Tony Blair used to hammer him for a smoothness that struck some as pseudo-American, and which contributed to his currency – or at least legibility – in the US. Margaret Thatcher’s strident persona had about it a force that, particularly since she was played by Meryl Streep in the movie, has been claimed by some in the US as “American” in flavour.

But Truss has something that can land equally well coming from British people trying to break the US: an effortless, almost Mr Bean-like social awkwardness that invites in Americans a rival condescension, and is frequently utilised by British people abroad. Truss’s odd syntax, lame jokes and occasionally unnerving eye contact may stand a better chance of landing in the US as charming eccentricity, or an extension of the standard-issue bumbling Brit.

Although, of course, in this case, it’s all moot, because no one knows who she is. The New York Times didn’t cover Truss’s book launch in Washington, nor did the Washington Post, and the book currently sits outside the top 4,000 on US Amazon. Her warning, whatever it was, will go not only unheeded but unheard – with no one more profoundly, one assumes, than Donald Trump.
