Pretty good but could be improved.

The offer for our trip was a good one but... the final price was considerably higher than the 'headline price' due to adding things you really can't do without, like a sensible luggage allowance and airport transfers (normally we hire a car but not really appropriate in this case). Still overall a decent price though. I wasn't too happy with the Ryanair confirmation process. It wasn't particularly well explained and in fact comms in general with Broadway could do with just a little 'tidy up' to make things properly clear. As for the trip, will wait until we've been on it in September!

Peter thank you for taking the time to leave your review for us. We will always have things like luggage allowances and transfers listed as optional extras, as they are a personal choice, we certainly cant assume that all of our customers want the same included into their holiday so its imperative that we leave the decision making up to each individual customer. Overall its great to hear that you were still happy with your amazing holiday deal. Please reach out to our Customer support team at [email protected] should you need any further assistance or help. thank you for your custom - Team Broadway Travel

Everything was easy to book and pay for…

Everything was easy to book and pay for the holiday of our choice. Price was reasonable for an all inclusive holiday. My only concern is that the transfers were not included which was another £100+ I feel most people would prefer to see the total cost where everything is included.

Date of experience : April 25, 2024

Thank you for your 5* review and honest feedback. When is comes to optional extras such as luggage allowances, transfers pre-booked seats etc we would never include them in the price as they are very much down down to personal choice, some customers add them and some don't so we have to respect all customer choices and appeal to all . We are so pleased we were able to assist you with your plans and we hope you have a wonderful holiday - Team Broadway Travel

Don't book unless you know you aren't cancelling or amending booking

Broadway Travel are Inspired Luxury Escapes. Holiday booked on with inspired Luxury Escapes in early January for £1500 each for a week in Corfu, Making a monthly payment of £830.99 a month On the news of my mother in law needing Chemotherapy treatmeant we were looking at cancelling or amending the booking to elsewhere for myself wife and newborn as it being her first holiday on the 2nd of may, we had paid to this date £2600, cancellation fee from Broadway travel was £1671.08 including ATOL cost for cancellation, leaving us with £1018.00 as a group recoup, we had looked into further costs for amending the holiday and other fees were too much, so my partner and i decided to go ahead with the booking and just cancel my mother and father in laws holiday due to the circumstances, however with the cancelation fee amendments this put the cost of our holiday up by £561.00 each so the £1500 + £561.00 equalled to £2061 each so total holiday value was now £2061 plus then the £1300 from the amount already paid by my mother and father in law made the new holiday total being £5422.00 for myself and wife (plus infant) I had then asked Broadway travel who are the holding company for Inspired Luxury Escapes to explain these costs between the 2nd and 8th of may the refund cost had changed meaning we were getting £276.28 less than 6 days before meaning the total holiday value being £5,698.28. not going to mention names of the senior staff but were well versed in being a multi booking and tied up on booking through different companies, between flights and "live" accommodation bookings that was used to change the value of refund, this isn't personal to the staff because I don't know any human with a pulse would enjoy going into work to do this on charges, with not given any transparency on their charges, All in all I've never received such poor service and an unwilling to give comprehension to astronomical fee's i thought we were out of the 80's on misleading of a sale and hiding behind a different company, this is still an open case so i will update with the final verdict.

Hi Chris, thank you for taking the time to leave your review. We are very sorry to learn about your mother-in-law’s treatment and offer our best wishes. It is never our intention to have dissatisfied guests or for any shortfall in high standards we endeavour to maintain. Any customer feedback is carefully recorded as this plays an important part in our quality control procedures, helping us to improve our future services. We would assure you that we are not complacent in the matters raised by you however we do have to take into consideration several factors before responding to any such communication. Respectfully before confirming a booking, customers must first accept our Terms and Conditions therefore agreeing to be bound by them. This ensures there are no grey areas, and all of our customers are treated the same with no exceptions. We note that you have been in contact with our Customer Support team and given the circumstances, they reapproached the suppliers, to appeal the charges incurred and having checked your file, I understand that the charges were altered in your favour. I can confirm that your refund has been sent to the team to process. Many thanks – Team Broadway Travel

The show doesn't have to end: On new Broadway cruise, fans can immerse themselves in theater

broadway travel cruise reviews

You could have the best seats for a Broadway show, but the production only lasts so long. But on The Broadway Cruise, a new voyage from Sixthman and e-commerce company EBG, passengers can spend five days immersed in the world of New York City theater on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship.

Anthony Diaz, CEO of Sixthman, which organizes music festivals at sea, told USA TODAY that they surveyed many Broadway fans and found they did not want the experience of seeing a show to end.

"They wanted to find a way to extend that feeling," said Diaz, who is also and SVP of Charters, Meetings & Incentives at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (Sixthman is a wholly owned subsidiary of NCL.)

The cruise will feature a roster of performers including Tony Award winners and nominees, and a range of programming that allows passengers to go beyond the stage doors.

When is The Broadway Cruise?

The cruise will sail round-trip on the Norwegian Gem from New York City to Bermuda from March 31 through April 5, 2023.

What can passengers can expect on The Broadway Cruise?

The cruise will feature performances from stars like Alan Cumming, Kristin Chenoweth, Laura Benanti, Joshua Henry, and more. Diaz said fans can expect a mix of what they might see on the performers' solo tours, "new content that maybe they can't do in a traditional theater environment," and Q&A sessions.

He said they try to "make it part performance, part entertainment," while also peeling back the curtain through behind-the-scenes stories. Diaz said performers will collaborate with one another as well.

There will also be meet-and-greets, discussions with industry veterans like scenic designer David Korins of shows like "Hamilton" and "Dear Evan Hansen," and karaoke, where passengers can have their turn in the spotlight.

You never know who might stop by to sing a show tune, either.

"We try to curate an environment where the actors or the talent feel really comfortable and oftentimes it's common for that natural interaction to come about across the ship, and actors will pop in the casino and sometimes they'll pop on the stage with karaoke."

How much does The Broadway Cruise cost?

An interior room starts at $2,191 for one person, or $1,195 per person for two guests (a small discount is added for single occupancy rates). There is an additional $395 charge per passenger for taxes and fees, according to the cruise's website.

The price of the room includes all performances, meals, and basic beverages like drip coffee, tea and nonpressed juices. Travelers can find more information and book  online  or by calling 877-379-9172. The ship can accommodate nearly 2,400 guests at double occupancy.

Be careful that the quote is the same as the final price.

I was quoted including hold baggage, but not seating. I asked for seats to be booked which I was charged for, but they were not good seats so was advised to visit the airline company website and book on there. However there was a charge, so I reported this to the agent. Likewise I was charged for hold baggage, without me realising this, which was already covered in the original quote. I received NO satisfaction from the Agent and have contacted ABTA regarding my complaint.

Reply from Broadway Travel

Good Afternoon Mr Leonard. Thank you for taking my call and I regret that you remain unhappy, however would like to reassure you that you have not been overcharged. You originally contacted us for a quote on 15 April. However, it was 2 weeks later when you contacted us again and therefore, we had to start over by checking availability of the flights and the hotel and had to check the price. Regretfully, we are unable to hold any prices and it is very likely that after 2 weeks, there would be a change in price due to the nature of our industry. You contacted us again the day later, and agreed to book at the new price quoted, and can assure you that this was the up-to-date, valid price. We do confirm that are unable to honour any price quoted especially after 14 days. The price quoted to you on your call on 30 April, was confirmed as including 2 x 22kg bags, your hotel and your transfers. You have not been charged twice for baggage. Your documentation clearly shows the breakdown of the cost of your holiday and again you can see 2 x 22kgs bags and 2 x 10kgs hand luggage have been added to your booking. I hope this helps clarifies the situation and of course when we are contacted by ABTA we will forward them your booking call and all documentation confirming what has been charged and what was agreed to. Many thanks, Team Broadway Travel

First time booking with Broadway Travel

Not difficult if you are used to finding your own way around booking websites. Booking itself is fairly clear but finding all the details after booking requires a bit of patience and is very DIY. Alan who helped me was kind and patient whilst booking. My first time travelling solo got an upgrade to a superior room. My only complaint is why should solo travellers pay for a single supplement. Value for money holidays; however, I did feel that if I'd been able to book online I could have done so far, far quicker than the sales team were able to do. Indeed, they had to ring me back several times ....

Hi Angie, thank you for sharing your feedback. Customer feedback, whether it is constructive or praiseworthy, plays a crucial role in shaping the ongoing success of our business. 6 tips for going on a cruise as a wheelchair user

Miami Beach, Government Cut, Tourists in Wheelchair watching Cruise Ship

Traveling in a wheelchair undoubtedly comes with its challenges, but almost any wheelchair user will probably agree that cruising comes with far fewer challenges than air travel and most other modes of transportation. On a cruise, you don't need to worry about finding an accessible taxi or calling in advance to check accessibility when going to dinner.

Instead, you can hop in an elevator and in less than five minutes, you'll be ready for dinner in a nice cruise ship restaurant . Life on board a cruise ship is easy for wheelchair users because it's like an entire city is right there on the ship. Whether you want to lounge by the pool and drink pina coladas all day, see a Broadway-style show or even gamble in the onboard casino, nearly anything is possible within the confines of a cruise ship.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

While cruising is one of the easier ways to travel with a disability, wheelchair users should keep a few things in mind when considering a cruise vacation. If you're planning a cruise, here are six tips for cruising as a wheelchair user to help ensure you have an enjoyable — and accessible — cruise vacation.

Book as early as possible

broadway travel cruise reviews

Some of the larger cruise ships can hold around 5,000 people. Royal Caribbean 's Icon of the Seas , currently the world's largest ship, carries 7,600 passengers. However, even with that much space, wheelchair-accessible cabins can be limited. Typically, a cruise ship only offers a few dozen accessible rooms, and they are often booked quickly. (MSC Cruises tends to provide more accessible cabins than other cruise lines. MSC Seaside offers 51 accessible cabins.)

If you're thinking about taking a cruise, it's incredibly important to do the proper research and reserve your accessible cabin as early as possible. Booking a year or more in advance is great, especially for Alaska cruises . Cruises to Alaska often sell out of accessible cabins in record time, so keep an eye out for on-sale dates if there's a specific cruise you'd like to book.

Choose a cruise line that works for you

broadway travel cruise reviews

Generally, the bigger the ship, the more accessible it is. For example, cruise lines like Carnival , Royal Caribbean and Disney have at least a few thousand passengers on every cruise, so the ships are more likely to accommodate wheelchair users. Holland America and Celebrity Cruises cater to older travelers, so you can also expect good access on their ships. However, smaller ships (and especially river cruises ) are typically not wheelchair-friendly.

Newer ships are also more accessible than older vessels. If you see that a brand-new ship is coming out from one of the big cruise lines, you can almost guarantee that accessibility will be fantastic.

broadway travel cruise reviews

To determine whether a ship is the right one for you, go to your chosen cruise line's website and pull up the deck plan of your desired ship. Accessible cabins will be indicated by a wheelchair symbol.

You can also do a Google search for "(cruise ship name) wheelchair access review" and read reviews from other wheelchair users. Nothing beats that firsthand perspective from a fellow wheelchair user.

Find out if ports of call are docked or tendered

broadway travel cruise reviews

Rolling around a cruise ship as a wheelchair user is spectacular, but what about exploring the various ports of call? Visiting various destinations on a single itinerary is one of the big advantages of a cruise vacation.

Wheelchair users should choose cruise itineraries where ships dock at the ports of call. Once the ship is tied up to the pier, wheelchair users can simply roll down a ramp to disembark the ship.

The alternative is that the ship anchors offshore and uses smaller, typically inaccessible, boats called tenders to take passengers ashore. It's difficult, and sometimes impossible, for wheelchair users to board these boats and transfer to shore.

You can find out if a port is docked or tendered by viewing the itinerary online or calling the cruise line.

Rent mobility equipment

broadway travel cruise reviews

For many wheelchair users, one of the most difficult parts of traveling is taking along medical and mobility equipment. As someone who travels with a motorized wheelchair, a shower/commode wheelchair, a patient lift, wheelchair chargers and other medical equipment, I know firsthand how challenging it is to haul everything around once you reach a destination.

To make the process easier, companies such as Special Needs at Sea and Scootaround will allow you to rent mobility equipment that will be waiting in your cabin when you board the ship. Cruise travelers can rent wheelchairs, hospital beds, patient lifts, oxygen concentrators and more.

Reserve shore excursions with accessibility-focused companies

broadway travel cruise reviews

If cruise lines are lacking in one department, it's the availability of wheelchair-accessible shore excursions. Some cruise lines do offer accessible shore excursions in certain destinations, but the choices can be limited.

Royal Caribbean offers accessible shore excursions in several port cities in the Caribbean, Europe and the Mediterranean. Passengers must fill out a request form prior to the cruise. Additionally, accessible shore excursions through Carnival Cruise Line are marked with a wheelchair icon. They include tours in Valletta, Malta; Glasgow, Scotland; Ketchikan, Alaska; and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

If your particular cruise line doesn't provide a good selection of wheelchair-friendly excursions, consider booking a tour with an external company. In most ports of call, especially in the Caribbean and Europe, you can find local companies that have adapted transportation. It might take a bit of a Google search to find them, but they are out there.

For example, Sage Traveling offers wheelchair-friendly shore excursions in dozens of popular cruise destinations. Even better, the company is managed by a wheelchair user, so you can rest assured that accessibility will be top-notch.

Let an accessibility specialist plan your cruise

If researching and planning a wheelchair-friendly cruise seems daunting, let someone else do the work for you. Some travel companies specialize in accessible tours — including cruises.

Easy Access Travel specializes in both accessible cruise vacations and packaged land tours for travelers with physical limitations. The company has sailed with such lines as Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Princess Cruises , Celebrity Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line .

In addition to offering accessible shore excursions, the above-mentioned Sage Traveling organizes wheelchair-friendly cruise vacations to the Caribbean, Europe and the Mediterranean.

I Saw Almost All 18 New Spring Shows on Broadway — Here Are the Best Ones to See

New York–based theater critic Barbara Schuler on the best new shows on Broadway right now.

Marc J. Franklin/Courtesy of Hell's Kitchen

Oh, the pressure. When you write about theater, it’s hard to get away from people (friends, family, minor acquaintances) inquiring about the best show to see on Broadway . Understandable, what with tickets so expensive and especially this spring, with 18 new shows opening in March and April alone.

Of course, my opinion (like everyone else’s) is completely subjective. But after seeing most of the new productions that have opened in the past few months, here are the ones I’m encouraging people to see — diplomatically listed in alphabetic order.

Emilio Madrid/Courtesy of Enemy of the People

"An Enemy of the People"

Circle in the Square, 235 W. 50th St.; anenemyofthepeopleplay.com

I always get chills when a play written more than 100 years ago is so frighteningly relevant. Ibsen’s 1882 drama about a local doctor who fights to inform the public about pollution in the public baths clearly speaks to our current concerns about climate change. The air of tension persists throughout, to the point that when actual climate protestors interrupted an early preview, many people thought it was part of the production. Of course, some  audience members just come to see two big names from television — Jeremy Strong of Succession as the beleaguered doctor, and Michael Imperioli ( The Sopranos , The White Lotus ) as his slimy brother, the town mayor.

"Cabaret"

August Wilson Theatre, 245 W. 52nd St.; kitkat.club

The show starts a full 75 minutes early at this production, with audiences invited to come early and have a drink or two — even dinner if you pay enough for your tickets — in the renovated theater, rebranded the Kit Kat Club. A cast of prologue performers wanders the three levels of the club, so by the time Eddie Redmayne as the emcee takes the stage to sing “Willkommen” you’re in the proper frame of mind. The powerful show set in the early days of the Nazi regime is always gut-wrenching, but in this version Gayle Rankin, playing Sally Bowles, really twists the knife with her unhinged rendition of the title song.

Marc J. Franklin/Courtesy of Hell's Kitchen

"Hell’s Kitchen"

Shubert Theatre, 225 W. 44th St.; hellskitchen.com

Alicia Keys has worked on this show for 13 years, but sorry — she’s not in it. Instead a young up-and-comer, Maleah Joi Moon, portrays Ali, a character clearly inspired by Keys’ life. The show is not completely biographical, but it does depict key elements of the Grammy winner’s upbringing, growing up in a building on West 43rd Street offering subsidized housing for artists. It’s a jukebox musical of sorts, featuring many of Keys’ best-known songs (“This Girl Is on Fire” blows the roof off the Shubert), but she has worked them seamlessly into this sweet coming-of-age story about a teenager defeating her demons and forging her own path.

Matthew Murphy/Courtesy of Mary Jane

"Mary Jane"

Samuel J. Friedman Theatre,  261 W. 47th St.; manhattantheatreclub.com

Did Rachel McAdams lose her way? You’d have thought the Oscar-nominated actress, who made a name for herself in the 2004 movie “The Notebook,” would have been a couple blocks away starring in the stage adaptation of the famed tearjerker. But no, instead she chose to make her Broadway debut in this gripping drama about a mother managing the care of her gravely ill child. The 90-minute (no intermission) play moves from a cramped apartment to a hospital pediatric intensive care unit, as an assortment of caretakers (night nurse, music therapist, a Buddhist nun) offer their assistance. But truthfully, it’s hard to take your eyes off McAdams as she navigates this unthinkable tragedy.

"Suffs"

The Music Box Theatre,  239 W. 45th St.; suffsmusical.com

In this season of high-profile producers, it’s hard to top Hillary Clinton. And the political nature of the production is inescapable, even before the Biden fundraiser. But forget all that — enjoy Shaina Taub’s musical for what it is, a thoughtful retelling of the suffragists’ struggle to pass the 19th Amendment. With a nod to Lin-Manuel Miranda, Taub plays the lead role herself, and she makes a fine Alice Paul, strident, demanding, unrelenting. And with all the rock blaring at us on Broadway stages right now, her songs are a welcome relief. There were a lot of mothers and daughters in the audience — with good reason.

Matthew Murphy and Evan Zimmerman/Courtesy of Gatsby

"The Great Gatsby"

Broadway Theatre, 1681 Broadway; broadwaygatsby.com

Of all the books getting a theatrical treatment this season, this is the one that has lovers of literature raising their eyebrows. But the adaptation remains relatively faithful to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s treasured classic — it’s no spoiler to say there’s no happy ending. Before the tragic finish, the rich, lavish production takes audiences to the wild, brash parties of the Roaring '20s, with sparkly costumes (I haven’t seen this many sequins since “The Cher Show”), brilliant dancing, music that evokes the jazz age, and some serious pyrotechnics. And yes, there’s a green light at the end of a dock.

"The Notebook"

Schoenfeld Theatre, 236 W. 45th St.; notebookmusical.com

The producers know tears will flow, which is why they’re selling commemorative tissue boxes at the concession stand. And it’s true, at times it’s painful to watch this heart-wrenching love story. Nicholas Sparks, who wrote the best seller that’s sold more than a million copies, told Time magazine the story is so enduring because of the universal elements of life and passion. The stage adaptation sticks pretty close to the book and the subsequent movie, though in the stage version the lovers are portrayed by three different couples.  The performances are stunning, especially from Dorian Harewood and Maryann Plunkett who play the couple in their declining years, and the ending is as bittersweet as they come.

Matthew Murphy/Courtesy of The Outsiders

"The Outsiders"

Jacobs Theatre, 242 W. 45th St.; outsidersmusical.com

Last April, S.E. Hinton joined the cast bringing her 1967 coming-of-age novel to the stage at the Outsiders House Museum in Tulsa (where the story is set).  Oh, and joining them was Angelina Jolie, who’s producing the show. But the musical works without all the hype — it’s a powerful, occasionally brutal display of teenage angst as two rival gangs defend their turf, and the music and choreography have audiences on the edge of their seats. Ultimately, though, it’s an endearing story of a family fighting to stay together.

Jeremy Daniel/Courtesy of The Wiz

"The Wiz"

Marquis Theatre, 210 W. 46th St.;  wizmusical.com

Wayne Brady as the title character in this lively revival doesn’t even show up until the second act, but it’s OK. The Afrocentric take on “The Wizard of Oz” is a fun theater experience thanks to the great songs — “Ease on Down the Road,” “Home” — and the laudable performances from cast members like young Nichelle Lewis, making her Broadway debut as Dorothy, to recording artist Deborah Cox, whose rendition of “Believe in Yourself” brings tears. Don’t try to compare with the 1978 film starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, and you’ll have a great time.

Matthew Murphy and Evan Zimmerman/Courtesy of The Who's Tommy

"The Who’s Tommy"

Nederlander Theatre, 208 W. 41st St.; tommythemusical.com

I loved this album more than life itself as a teen, so it was a big thrill to introduce the musical to my daughter and granddaughter. While story lines differ some between album, movie, and stage show, the plot is pretty much expected: Kid witnesses horrific murder and immediately goes deaf, dumb, and blind. It’s a story of acceptance and redemption, but really the audience comes for the music — “Pinball Wizard” rocks the rafters. The Who’s frontman Pete Townshend has been out and about promoting the show; he performed with the young cast of the rock opera, and let’s just say The Tonight Show might never be the same.

Matthew Murphy/Courtesy of Water for Elephants

"Water for Elephants"

Imperial Theatre, 249 W. 45th St.; waterforelephantsthemusical.com

The high-flying acrobatics are worth the price of admission in this new musical, adapted from the best-selling novel and set in a traveling circus during the depression. Seriously, one fearless performer is repeatedly tossed halfway across the stage — I don’t think I ever held my breath so many times in one show. A love story at heart (not always a happy one), the musical is told in flashback as the narrator, once the circus’ vet, looks back on his life. While this is no “Lion King,” the animals are a delight, whether they’re portrayed symbolically (an aerialist portrays a horse in cascading white silks) or the star of the show, Rosie the elephant, a massive, life-size puppet (even if sometimes all you see is her trunk).

Same as above

We had an issue with the name on the booking. Broadway travel were quick to amend the booking. They wavered their fee to do this. Only negative was that the holiday provider charged us £35 to change the surname of my partner as in error the system had accepted my surname instead when inputting information. This type of error to amend should not be chargeable and money was taken for the service. Disgraceful.

Date of experience : 20 April 2024

Thanks for sharing this. We know its sometimes difficult to follow the information required online at time of booking however given this was a genuine mistake when the details were inputted, we were pleased to assist you with a free of charge amendment to correct the name. Regrettably the respective suppliers are not as lenient and the airline rejected the removal of the administration charge. Despite this, we are pleased your issue was sorted and swiftly. Thanks from Hannah and all the team.

Thank you Broadway -Fred who booked the holiday great

Booking easy to complete and Broadway will respond quickly.

Good website, some items slightly difficult to understand regarding the standard of room with view of pool needing to be specified but in the next section the Stanfard Room already selected and the client cannot alter. Hope that no issues when we arrive. Good response to change of birth date with quick confirmation that it had been actioned sent by e-mail. Generally easy and efficient experience. Lack of response by phone

Date of experience : 15 April 2024

Good Morning Phillip. Thank you for your review and feedback. I can confirm that the room booked by yourself online is a standard room, with no view specified. Having checked our website, it does not appear that we offer this as a guarantee, however if you would like to request a pool view please either email our Customer Support team on [email protected] or by telephone (open times vary and are detailed on our website). We note that you were unable to get through to us on the phone yesterday. We do deal with a huge volume of telephone queries however yesterday our longest call waiting to be answered was 7 minutes and the average waiting time was just over 2 minutes, however, we are very pleased that your date of birth was corrected quickly and confirmed by email. Please do not hesitate to contact us using either of the above methods if you have any further queries and we hope you have a lovely holiday - Team Broadway Travel

Outstanding service

Thank you for taking the time with a fussy indecisive customer like me! Despite changing our minds on dates and passengers several times Liv did not give up and secured us a great deal. Beating several main competitors may I add. We are on countdown to August already!

This is great to hear and happy holiday countdown. Never apologise for making sure. We understand how important a holiday is, so it's vital you get it right. Thanks again from Liv and all the team at Broadway Travel.

Easy, straightforward booking

This booking was easy to complete online. With other companies you often get right to the confirmation page and it all goes wrong and you have to then call the company. This did not happen and I got exactly what I expected with no added ‘extras’. I have used Broadway Travel previously and never had any issues.

Michelle we appreciate your 5* review and feedback on our website! We have put a lot of work into the website to ensure it is user friendly and offers the best prices and we are thrilled that you agree. Have a wonderful holiday, Team Broadway Travel

Praise &acknowledgement

Ok, we have used Broadway travel on a number of ocassions, the service is first rate. On this booking we received diamond service from Annie, who was attentive to our requirements and tailor made the flights & hotels accordingly. Her helpfulness with paperwork required and on going services was seamless. We are now at the point of our departure & we encountered some necessary checks which we found difficult & stressful, Rachel was so patient, so helpful and so pleasant, can't begin to say how much this was appreciated. Both members of staff connected with this booking must be acknowledged by other clients and Broadway Travel company.

Date of experience : 24 April 2024

Jean this is simply fantastic. We strive to deliver the best service at all times and to know how much an impact Rachel and Annie's service has had on your booking experience is amazing. We will ensure they both see your very kind comments and I am sure they will be over the moon too. We all hope you have a fabulous holiday and thank you again for your review and for choosing Broadway Travel.

Due to ill health we had to amend a long planned holiday to Tenerife. Traveling the next day we thought that Broadway Travel wouldn't be able to change the dates but we were wrong. The fast and efficient way that they handled the change was beyond our expectations. I can't speak too highly of Sara and the team and would wish them a million thanks for their wonderful work.

Icon of the seas: the best dining, amenities and more on royal caribbean's new ship.

This family-friendly megaship features plenty of activities, entertainment and restaurants.

Icon of the Seas

Royal Caribbean International's newest ship, Icon of the Seas.

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean International

Key Takeaways

  • Icon of the Seas is the largest cruise ship in the world, with 18 passenger-accessible decks, eight different neighborhoods and 2,805 staterooms.
  • Think of Icon of the Seas as an all-in-one adventure vacation contained on a ship. Young families and energetic travelers will enjoy it most.
  • Itineraries originate from Miami , sail to destinations around the Caribbean and include a stop at Royal Caribbean's private island , Perfect Day at CocoCay.

If you have any degree of interest in traveling or cruising, chances are you've heard the buzz around Icon of the Seas. Another record-breaking ship by Royal Caribbean International , Icon of the Seas debuted on Jan. 27, 2024, as the largest cruise ship in the world. It is epic in every sense, featuring 18 cruiser-accessible decks and stretching 1,196 feet from bow to stern.

With greatest-of-all-time soccer player Lionel Messi as the ship's godfather, the Icon of the Seas is truly iconic. Messi brought the entire Inter Miami team along for the opening ceremony and the big reveal of the team's new Royal Caribbean-sponsored jerseys. I was fortunate enough to attend this star-studded ceremony as part of the press preview sailing in the days leading up to the ship's grand debut to the public. It was everything I thought it would be and more, and nobody could have been more appropriate than Messi to send this ship on her maiden voyage.

Boarding a ship of this size can seem overwhelming, but not when you understand the layout. Icon of the Seas is broken up into eight distinct neighborhoods: AquaDome, Central Park, Thrill Island, Chill Island, Royal Promenade, The Hideaway, Suite Neighborhood and Surfside, a neighborhood built for young families looking for nonstop fun and kid-approved eats and treats.

In addition to these public areas, there are 2,805 staterooms spread across 12 decks. Icon of the Seas' capacity maxes out at 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members, but with the plethora of public spaces and variety of things to do and see, you can choose your own adventure without encountering more crowds than you want to.

Skye Sherman

Icon of the Seas itinerary

During its inaugural 2024-2025 cruising season, Icon of the Seas offers seven-night eastern or western Caribbean adventures from Miami, stopping at a variety of tropical destinations. All sailings include a stop at Royal Caribbean's award-winning private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, in the Bahamas . Other destinations include Basseterre, St. Kitts & Nevis ; Roatan, Honduras; and Cozumel, Mexico .

During the 2025-2026 cruising season, new destinations will include Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic ; San Juan, Puerto Rico ; Labadee, Haiti; Costa Maya, Mexico; and Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas (part of the U.S. Virgin Islands ). All sailings will originate from Miami.

No matter your Icon of the Seas itinerary, you'll visit beautiful places – but you can expect to feel torn about spending any time off the ship, because it's just that jampacked with things to do.

Royal Caribbean International's newest ship, Icon of the Seas.

Who should sail on Icon of the Seas?

Icon of the Seas appeals not so much to a demographic as to a psychographic; you're going to need to be someone who likes to live life in all caps. Royal Caribbean set out to create "the world's best vacation" contained on a ship, so Icon of the Seas is for anyone who would enjoy the combination of a beach trip, a resort stay, a water park adventure and island-hopping.

Fun-loving travelers and families with kids of varying ages will do best on this ship; it feels a little bit like Disney World with over-the-top everything and a truly massive sprawl. Older travelers who prefer a more quiet, refined experience may want to opt for a less kid-friendly ship. Still, even couples without children will find plenty of fun adult-friendly things to do and romantic places to tuck in.

The Royal Promenade can be quite loud and buzzy, but simply relocating to another onboard neighborhood can completely shift the vibe. Also, keep in mind that the ship really is huge, and walking from end to end can be a hike, so those with limited mobility or endurance might want to look into a smaller ship.

Icon of the Seas prices are high in its opening season, but cruisers with big dreams and small budgets can expect rates to drop by the time the next ship in the series debuts.

Royal Caribbean International's newest ship, Icon of the Seas.

The stateroom

With a ship this overstimulating, it's imperative that your stateroom is a haven. Luckily, Icon of the Seas offers peaceful rooms, many of which feature ocean or Central Park neighborhood views. Cruise ship accommodations are stereotypically compact – even cramped – but the floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows in Icon of the Seas' cabins (with the exception of the windowless interior rooms) lend an airy, open feel. The cabin layouts are also optimized to provide the maximum amount of storage, floor space and comfort.

Stateroom decor is mildly nautical- and tropical-themed, with calming hues that mimic the scenery outside your window (think blues, beiges and whites). High-tech elements include smart TVs, LED mirrors and the ability to control many aspects of your room from an app.

My husband and I stayed in an Ocean View Large Balcony Stateroom, a 204-square-foot refuge from the hustle and bustle of the ship (the balcony adds another 65 to 70 square feet). This room type can sleep up to four people with a sofa bed for one or two; the room also features twin beds that convert to a king bed for couples.

My husband is 6 feet, 3 inches tall, and we were comfortable in our room, even though our quarters included a large bed, a bathroom, a sofa and a desk. We loved sitting on our private balcony and watching the deep blues of the Atlantic Ocean flow by.

If money is no object, the Ultimate Family Townhouse – an over-the-top eight-guest, three-story pad with a private whirlpool on the balcony, three bathrooms, a slide that connects the second and main levels, an in-suite cinema, a dining room and a kitchenette – looks epic. But keep in mind, it costs nearly $100,000 for the week.

The Sunset Corner Suites (about one-fifth of the cost of the Ultimate Family Townhouse, but still expensive) are also pretty sweet, with a wraparound balcony and a bed facing the sea.

Luckily, not all rooms break the bank; with four main stateroom categories (suite, balcony, ocean view and inside) and 28 subcategories, there's something for everyone.

Best amenities on Icon of the Seas

It's almost impossible to run out of things to do aboard Icon of the Seas.

For thrill-seekers, the largest water park at sea – Category 6 – features the Frightening Bolt (the tallest waterslide on a ship) and the Pressure Drop (the first open freefall waterslide on a cruise vessel).

If you've tired of the seven swimming pools, six waterslides, laser tag, mini-golf, rock climbing wall, escape room, sports courts, outdoor decks, theater, spa and all-day programming, simply take a stroll down the Royal Promenade for Las Vegas -style people-watching. The Royal Promenade has 15 restaurants, bars and lounges, as well as a Starbucks that seems to have a line no matter what time you go. The neighborhood feels a bit like a shopping mall … if a shopping mall had floor-to-ceiling ocean views made possible by the world's largest kinetic art sculpture.

The Pearl, a feat of engineering, is one of the most unique aspects of the ship's design. This art piece is actually a load-bearing structure supporting three decks, but it looks and feels like an interactive art experience designed solely for the enjoyment of guests. The multisensory immersive structure has 3,000 kinetic panels and moody ever-changing lighting. It is one of the first things guests will see when they walk on board, as it stretches from the Royal Promenade up to Central Park.

My husband and I spent most of our time at the FlowRider surf simulator – his favorite amenity – but we made sure to leave time for Taylor Swift trivia at Spotlight Karaoke and the superhuman stunts of the Aqua Theater show, a must on any Icon of the Seas voyage. The ship even has a massive ice arena called Absolute Zero for ice skating (the 20-minute sessions are complimentary) and impressive shows.

We also loved lounging in The Overlook Bar & Pods, an area at the very front of the ship (behind the AquaDome) that features two levels of floor-to-ceiling wraparound windows. It felt airy and open, which can't be said about many cruise ship interiors.

Best dining venues on Icon of the Seas

There are more dining options aboard Icon of the Seas than you can fit in on a seven-night cruise – but you can give it the old college try. Thirteen of the dining venues are complimentary, while 14 are specialty restaurants (which cost extra; fees vary). There are also 18 bars and lounges.

The best meal we experienced on the ship was at the Chops Grille specialty eatery. When we spotted Royal Caribbean CEO Jason Liberty and a group of bigwigs at a table next to us, we knew we were in the right place. We loved sitting outside and enjoying the breezes of Central Park while we chowed down, but you can eat indoors for an elegant steakhouse experience and a view of the open kitchen and butcher's display, which shows off specialty cuts like high-grade wagyu and bone-in tomahawks.

While I'd never turn down a swanky steak dinner, grabbing quick poolside bites at El Loco Fresh and indulging in some food hall-style grazing at AquaDome Market were equally enjoyable. We also had no complaints eating several meals at Windjammer, the classic complimentary cruise ship buffet.

Even though we don't have children, we stopped into Surfside Bites for a very kid-friendly meal, complete with soft serve ice cream cones from Sprinkles (because no cruise is complete without soft serve). We didn't try anything from the open-air, lemonade stand-inspired Lemon Post bar, but its menu of cocktails and mocktails looked delicious.

And since you're on vacation, be sure to check out the milkshake bar Desserted, where the sugary creations are as photo-worthy as they are decadent. They're worth the upcharge.

Royal Caribbean International's newest ship, Icon of the Seas.

Best excursions on Icon of the Seas

Depending on what's on your Icon of the Seas itinerary, you may be able to book activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, tropical jungle adventures, visits to Mayan ruins, volcano hikes, rainforest zip lining, relaxing beach days or cultural immersion tours.

Note that Royal Caribbean features the same options on many of its other Caribbean cruises; none of the excursions on offer are exclusive to Icon of the Seas.

Because our press preview sailing only visited Perfect Day at CocoCay, we did not experience any of the shore excursions. Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas was plenty of fun, even though we didn't plan anything in advance.

If we had made plans, we would have liked to check out the Up, Up and Away tethered hot air balloon, which wasn't running that day, and the overwater cabanas at Coco Beach Club, which were all booked. Thrill Waterpark (which features the tallest waterslide in North America), Oasis Lagoon (the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean) and the adults-only Hideaway Beach are other highlights of Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Royal Caribbean International's newest ship, Icon of the Seas.

Overall impressions of Icon of the Seas

Royal Caribbean seems to be focused on superlatives. It has the biggest, best, tallest, largest and most of everything – especially when it comes to Icon of the Seas. If you like jampacked, adventurous vacations that squeeze a lot of adventure and relaxation into one memorable week, Icon of the Seas is probably for you.

While I love seeing Royal Caribbean push the limits of what cruises can be, the ship may almost be too big for some. It's an all-out Vegas-esque vessel that feels more like a floating city; you will probably forget (more than once) that you're not on dry land.

That's not necessarily a bad thing – if Icon of the Seas looks fun to you, it probably will be – but my husband and I tend to gravitate more toward authentic, immersive, on-the-ground cultural experiences when we travel. While Icon of the Seas is a lot of things, it's not that. We had a fantastic time and have already started planning a future Royal Caribbean cruise with a group of friends and family, but we also sympathize with the anticruisers of the world. Vacationing does not a traveler make.

Still, the shows are entertaining, the service is attentive, the music is jamming, and the architecture and design are incredibly impressive. I have no real complaints and suspect that most cruisers will have the time of their lives on Icon of the Seas – exactly as the minds at Royal Caribbean envisioned when they dreamed up this iconic ship.

Tokyo Dinner Cruise Review: Best Foodie Experience in Tokyo?

Home » Blog » Japan » Tokyo Dinner Cruise Review: Best Foodie Experience in Tokyo?

Embarking on a Tokyo dinner cruise is a great way to experience several classic Japanese dishes, see the iconic cityscape at night, and have a little fun with free-flowing beverages all at the same time.

Sumida River dinner cruise Tokyo Japan

Recommended to us by a friend who lives in Japan, we decided to book a dinner cruise while we were in Tokyo, and we’re so glad we did!

Climb on board a yakatabune (type of Japanese boat) that has traditional tatami mat floors and tables set up for a delightful dinner cruise in Tokyo.

It’s a great way to check a bunch of boxes and is one of the best things to do in Tokyo if you have limited time:

  • Traditional Japanese meal (with a variety of dishes!): Check!
  • See some of the most iconic landmarks in Japan: Check!

Oh, and did I mention that there is free-flowing alcohol?!

We had a great experience and decided to write up a little review so that you know what to expect. We’re also sharing pros and cons so you can determine if doing a Tokyo dinner cruise is a must on your Japan itinerary.

Where you go

Tokyo dinner cruise Japan

This 2.5-hour cruise departs from the heart of Asakusa and follows the Sumida River, which snakes through the center of Tokyo.

From the boat, guests can enjoy views of some of the city’s most iconic landmarks:

  • Tokyo Skytree
  • Odaiba and the Rainbow Bridge
  • skyline of Tokyo Bay illuminated at night

Taking this dinner cruise can be a great way to see some of the top landmarks in a short amount of time, making this one of the best things to do in Tokyo at night.

The food

Food on the Tokyo dinner cruise Japan

Seeing the city lit up at night is really cool, no doubt about it. The best part, though, is the food and free-flowing (yep, you read that right) drinks!

The dinner is a fantastic assortment of roughly 14 classic Japanese foods , like tempura, udon, sashimi, tofu, and more. The food keeps coming until you say you don’t want any more, so you definitely won’t leave hungry!

Honestly, we thought the food was better than what we expected for an experience like this.

Food on the Tokyo dinner cruise

Is it the best meal you can get in Tokyo? No. Tokyo is one of the foodie capitals of the world, boasting some of the best restaurants on the planet, so the bar is high.

However, the food on this dinner cruise is really high quality and you get to sample a variety of dishes which is really fun (especially if it’s your first time in Japan ).

Drinks on the Tokyo dinner cruise Japan

Pair your meal with all-you-can-drink alcoholic (and non) beverages .

It’s a really great way to sample Japanese drinks and see which you like best. Sip sake, plum wine ( umeshu ), Japanese beer, and a variety of local cocktails like highballs, and one of my personal favorites, chuhai !

They have a really good set up where you can scan a QR code and order the drink you’d like. This means you never have to flag down a server, which is really nice.

Tokyo dinner cruise atmosphere

The boat’s interior is entirely tatami mat floors which is pretty cool and gives it a traditional feel .

I’m sure the crowd varies each night but when we did this experience, I’d say it seemed to be about half foreign travelers and half Japanese people .

The tables are set up so that you are seated 4 people to a table . This means if you are traveling as a couple, you will be next to another party of 2. The tables are large enough that there is space between parties, but it is a nice way to mingle . We had a really nice chat with the couple’s on either side of us, making the experience even better (in my opinion).

We felt like this experience was the perfect length to do a bit of sightseeing, indulge in a long dinner, and enjoy mingling and beverages.

Embarkation point for the Tokyo dinner cruise Japan

  • Get to the meeting point at least 15 minutes before departure . Give yourself plenty of time, as getting around Tokyo often takes longer than you’d expect!
  • You will check in with your name and number in your party with a guide that has a clipboard with everyone’s names.
  • Once ready, all guests will be told to board the boat .
  • Remove your shoes and wear a pair of slippers.

Removing your shoes on the Tokyo dinner cruise

  • Find the table with your name on it and sit down. While the floors are tatami mats, there is a sunken section under each table so you can sit with your legs underneath (instead of sitting cross-legged on the floor for 2.5 hours!).
  • There will be some dishes and drinks already at your table , but a server will come over to light your hot pot soon.
  • Order any beverages you’d like using the QR code at your table.
  • The boat departs and you will cruise down the Sumida River .
  • There will be a short stop where you can walk on the top deck if you’d like to see the Tokyo Skytree.
  • Eventually, the boat will turn around and start (slowly) making its way back to the departure point.

Tokyo dinner cruise

  • I think one of the best parts is that you get to try many different types of Japanese foods and drinks in a single setting.
  • It’s nice having dinner plans in Tokyo because many of the well-known restaurants either are very difficult to get reservations at or you have to wait in line for hours. We liked knowing that we had plans set before arriving in Tokyo.
  • You get to see some of the main landmarks in Tokyo.
  • It’s conveniently located in Asakusa, which is an area you’ll definitely want to explore anyway.
  • You can mingle with other travelers.
  • It is family-friendly.

The not so good

Tokyo dinner cruise Japan

  • The tour guides don’t speak much (if any) English. Don’t expect to learn much on this dinner cruise. There’s only a couple of times when someone speaks on a microphone, and unless you speak Japanese, it might go over your head. Don’t worry too much though – it’s mainly just announcing when you’re passing by landmarks, which you can figure out on your own if you look out the window during an announcement.
  • It’s a bit of a splurge. If you’re on a tight budget, this might not be for you, as it isn’t exactly cheap. That said, when you factor in all the food, the free-flowing drinks, and the boat sight-seeing, we think it was a really good value.
  • Depending on your departure time (which varies by day), you may be getting off of the boat quite late. Just keep in mind that most subways in Tokyo stop running around midnight. If you’d like to stop somewhere after the boat ride or explore Asakusa a bit more after the crowds have dissipated, watch the time so you don’t get stuck taking a (very expensive!) taxi.

Still have questions? Here are some of the most common questions and their answers.

Are children allowed?

Eating on the Tokyo dinner cruise

Yes, this is a family-friendly experience (to a point) .

Our experience: We took our 2-year-old daughter on this boat ride and she did fantastic. She does really well in situations where there are many people around and she does well trying new foods. We had stickers and other toys to keep her occupied.

It was a great experience for us. All that said, we did this as one of our last nights in Japan, when we were all fully adjusted to the time difference.

Our daughter was the only child on the boat (which is often the case for many activities we do!). There weren’t high chairs or utensils for her, so it wasn’t necessarily catered to children, but instead an experience where they are welcome.

We also know that she does well in restaurants and felt fairly confident it would be appropriate. However, if your child doesn’t do all that wll in restaurants, it might be tricky since there’s not really an area to go walk around or get away from sensory overload.

Are there bathrooms on board?

Bathrooms on the Tokyo dinner cruise

Yes, there are bathrooms so you don’t have to worry about holding it!

They are small, but clean and like any other public bathroom in Japan.

Can they accommodate dietary restrictions?

Food on the Tokyo dinner cruise

If you are a vegetarian or have special dietary needs or restrictions, the Tokyo dinner cruise can accommodate. You will need to inform them of any and all special dietary needs (including food allergies) in the comment section of the booking form.

If you fail to inform about special dietary needs during booking , you will not the option to change once on the tour.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking your dinner cruise at least a month before your trip. If possible, book as soon as you know which days you’ll be in Tokyo so you have the best availability.

Booked with Broadway through Facebook

Booked with Broadway through Facebook, so i suppose it was abit risky having never heard of the company before. Spoke with a lovely lady called Annie both through Facebook and on the phone and she was very helpful considering I had no clue what I wanted really. A few weeks later decided to change my booking as wanted a larger room. Again I was very undesisive and back and too and Annie was super super helpful and saw it the whole way through with me. Always got back to me and rang me back. Totally happy with what I've now booked and I can't wait!!

Date of experience : 05 April 2024

Donna, what a truly lovely review for Annie, she is absolutely overjoyed with your comments and 5* review and sends her very best wishes to you. Happy Monday! - Team Broadway Travel

Helpful agents

Good to have someone to talk to for those little unknowns that crop up when making an online booking, However price quoted by agent was slightly higher than online price, so we went with online price and had no problems.

All booked and sorted for the end of April!

I received one of my regular emails from Broadway and quickly saw a holiday for my wife and I. However, I did have some questions and used the on-line chat. I was not sure if I would get AI or a robot, but got a human who offered to call me. Michael answered all my questions satisfactorly and did my booking for me over the phone. This was really excellent service. The price we got was really good and we are how looking forward to an all-inclusive holiday in Turkey at the end of April. We have used Broadway Travel before and always had great holidays.

Morning Ian and we are very grateful for your review and feedback regarding our booking process and Michael's service. We work very hard to provide excellent personalised service no matter which means of communication are used and we really appreciate your feedback and your repeat custom. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries and we hope you enjoy the delights Turkey has to offer! Many thanks, Team Broadway Travel

No Pressure

A call centre in India was not what I expected when contacting Broadway Travel. However this turned out to be a very pleasant experience. My contact was Diana (pseudonym - as it is easier for U.K. clients than Indian names) and she was extremely helpful checking all options for the holiday and flight package I was interested in. She sent me the quotes by e-mail so that I could consider the options at my leisure. Once the decision had been made I contacted her again and she made all the arrangements. No pressure to buy, no pushy sales pitch for add ons, just helpful and concise information. I would normally book everything myself - the flights on line and hotel direct. Broadway Travel certainly saved me money, time and stress. Would happily use Broadway Travel again to book a holiday.

Date of experience : 20 March 2024

Charles - thank you so much for taking the time to leave your feedback and 5* review. We are very pleased that you found your booking experience with Diana to be easy and helpful. We are extremely proud of the service that our agents provide, and it makes our day to know that you appreciated all of her hard work too! We all hope you have a wonderful holiday and please remember that we are here to help if you have any further queries - Many thanks - Team Broadway Travel

Sales are good, and an amazing after-don't care serviceBooking through the agent was easy and…

Booking through the agent was easy and helpful. I needed further help after the booking was complete and the service was extremely poor - they will not pick up the phone.

Good Afternoon Mr Toole. Thank you for taking my call earlier. I understand that you have also spoken to Raechel and confirmed that you were very pleased with her service and she resolved your query easily and quickly. I note that you were calling as you could not access managemybooking as were inputting the incorrect departure date, however Raechel advised the correct date and walked you through the airline website to assist you further. Having investigated the call wait times today, the longest call wait today was 7 minutes, and the average just over 2 minutes. You did advise that you hung up after 6 minutes. However, we are pleased that you now have access to managemybooking and as I advised on our call, if you do not wish to call us, you can send us a message and one of our agents will respond as quickly as possible. We hope you have a wonderful holiday when the time comes and thank you for taking the time to leave your review, Team Broadway Travel

Henry Mance

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

I still get a jolt of excitement when I see electric cars. Last Wednesday at Southampton docks, when the sky was as grey as a tax return, my eyes settled on a few hundred Teslas, freshly imported. A Tesla sign announced proudly: “Our mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.”

But Elon was out of luck. We were not ready for the future just yet. Our minibus was not in Southampton to pick up a Model Y; we had to come to see the world’s newest cruise ship. Just a few metres from the Tesla forecourt, so near that you could probably have stretched a charging cable, sat Cunard’s 322-metre, $600mn pleasure palace, the Queen Anne.

The Queen Anne is shiningly, achingly new — we were here for a launch party. But in energy terms, it’s already a relic. If battery-powered Teslas are at the future of transport, the Queen Anne is the past. It is not powered by electricity or hydrogen or even (the still-bad-for-the-climate) liquified natural gas. It uses marine gas oil, refined from crude oil.

It will spend the next couple of decades chugging around Europe, polluting various picturesque port cities. Friends of the Earth estimate that a passenger in a standard cabin on a typical cruise ship is responsible for 300kg of carbon emissions per day, or around six times as much as an average land-based tourist. The difference narrows a little if you include flights, but many cruise-goers fly to their destination too. I looked back at the neatly parked Teslas, and felt forlorn.

The fuel is just part of a broader weirdness. Cruise ships represent a holiday unmoored not just from land, but from reality itself. Whether this is appealing depends, I suppose, on whether you like reality. Either way, and even if you’re familiar with cruise ships, you will surely still be caught off-guard by the oddness of the experience.

broadway travel cruise reviews

In Southampton, we looked up at the Queen Anne’s sky-blocking vastness: 13 floors of floating luxury. We were shepherded towards the ship by dozens of Cunard employees — kindly women who looked like they’d come straight from a tallest sunflower contest in Somerset. We stepped aboard, and saw the staff switch abruptly from pure English to mostly Filipino.

The Queen Anne — or as the Pravda-esque Tannoy announcements insisted on calling her, “the beautiful Queen Anne” — had only emerged from a dockyard near Venice a few days earlier. We, a mix of journalists, travel agents and faded celebrities, were its first passengers before it began the maiden voyage to Lisbon.

These are boom times for the cruising industry. In Covid, cruise ships briefly became death traps for elderly holidaymakers. But memories are short. Cruise ships are now going viral in a different way: a recent story featured a Florida couple who have decided to live permanently on cruises, finding it cheaper than living on land (and with less driving than a motorhome). The world’s largest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas, launched in January. Viking Holdings, a river cruise specialist which bans under-18s, last week floated successfully on the stock exchange.

For Cunard, a subsidiary of cruise giant Carnival, the launch of the Queen Anne means that it has four ships in operation for the first time since 1999. The Queen Anne is “a destination in itself,” one of the officers enthused to me. “It’s a floating hotel!” It’s also a floating shopping centre, leisure centre and perhaps retirement home.

With a gross tonnage of 113,000, the Queen Anne is larger than its siblings Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth (and only trumped by Cunard’s flagship, Queen Mary 2). There’s a grand piano in the reception area, a casino and a 835-seat theatre. The walls are lined with the largest curated art collection at sea, some 4,000 pieces, not all of them bad. Chef Michel Roux Jr., relocating a few elements of his Le Gavroche experience from Mayfair to the Queen Anne, reports that the galley had “every bit of kit . . . I’m just overwhelmed by the size of it.” The miracle is how this floats at all.

I tour the wellness centre, with its large sauna and offers of Botox injections. Ian McEwan wrote in his novel Saturday that, after our civilisation collapses, the old folk will crouch around peat fires and tell their disbelieving grandchildren of the luxury of hot showers in winter – “of thick white towels as big as togas, waiting on warming racks.” If I am ever one of these old folk, I will tell them instead of the Queen Anne’s Himalayan salt sauna, of its ice bath and Irish pub — all propelled thousands of miles across seas by large quantities of fossil fuel. Did we not realise the madness?

My room is one of the spacier cabins at the back of the vessel — with two large TVs, a bath and shower and a sofa. The large balcony looks over a ship unloading scrap metal, so I use my imagination. Without it, I might forget I’m on a ship at all.

Outside, the Queen Anne is not quite ready for her close-up. Staff queue for their uniforms. Full cardboard boxes pile up in corridors. Men hurry around, fixing lights and coffee machines. There is an air of gentle anarchy.

Occasionally, I catch sight of one of the on-board celebrities such as royal commentator Jennie Bond, gardener Alan Titchmarsh, actor Celia Imrie, and cricket commentator Henry Blofeld. One other celebrity, who shall remain anonymous, told me he found the environment “prison-like”. But for a captive audience, and a paying client, he might be persuaded to step aboard and scintillate.

There is a genre of magazine-writing that is scathing of cruise holidays. A cynical, middle-aged writer goes on board and quickly despairs. Indeed, it’s easy to be rude about cruising. Cruises are nature holidays for people who can’t really like nature, foreign travel for people who don’t really want to leave home, the Mediterranean for people who don’t want to get their feet damp or sandy. David Foster Wallace, the US writer who wrote about a cruise in the Caribbean in 1996, reported hearing adult passengers ask whether snorkelling would involve getting wet “and what time the Midnight Buffet is”.

broadway travel cruise reviews

But all this now rings hollow. First, in the battle between the snobs and the cruisers, the cruisers have won. It was Harper’s magazine that published Foster Wallace’s despairing piece. Its one-time stablemate, Harper’s Bazaar, is now the official partner of Queen Anne’s spa and wellness centre.

Second, humanity is no worse on cruise ships. There were no real-life passengers aboard the Queen Anne. But the workers I spoke to were unfailingly courteous. It was strange having people find my every need interesting: I suppose this is what it’s like being appointed CEO. At the Queens Grill, the top restaurant, they brought me excellent food and a 52-page wine menu. I wasn’t sure how comfortable I was being the source of their nine-month separation from their families, but you get the gist.

For Foster Wallace, the delusion of cruising was that you could truly be satiated. The ship infantilises you; it encourages you to demand more. However many restaurants are on offer — the Queen Anne has 14, including a steakhouse, a Japanese and an Indian, as well as a dozen bars — it will not be enough.

For me, the delusion is the façade of cleanliness. You have little sense of what you are churning into the air and seas. The images of polished cruise ships surrounded by glassy open water have long misled us. The Titanic burned more than 800 tonnes of coal a day. The Queen Elizabeth 2, which Cunard retired in 2008, once burned 433 tonnes of oil a day, equivalent to one and a half tonnes per passenger per transatlantic crossing. Cunard declined to say how much the Queen Anne will burn, but we can safely say that it will be a lot. Enough of flight-shame, how about float-shame?

Cruising is the most polluting way to travel, much worse than flying. The Queen Anne will visit Europe’s two most polluted ports, Barcelona and Civitavecchia (Rome), and six of the top ten, once you include Palma, Hamburg, Southampton and Funchal. Although the Queen Anne uses low-sulphur fuel, in 2022 Europe’s 218 cruise ships emitted much more sulphur than all of its nearly 300mn cars, according to the campaign group Transport and Environment. Venice has banned the ships from its historic centre; a few other cities are restless.

broadway travel cruise reviews

One basic way that cruise ships can reduce their emissions is by hooking up to electricity when they are in port. The Queen Anne can do this, but many ships don’t bother, partly because buying electricity is more expensive than running their engines.

Friends of the Earth rates Cunard’s environmental performance ‘D minus’ (Carnival, Cunard’s Florida-based parent, only gets an F). Aboard the Queen Anne, an “Environment Notice” does tell passengers to put their rubbish in the bin.

Instead Cunard makes a play of its British heritage. The barely digestible guff on the Queens Grill’s dinner menu says that Cunard’s history “has rested on a royal backbone”. This sounds so uncomfortable that it nearly puts me off the miso asparagus.

“In just 12 short years Queen Anne achieved a great deal, not least the unification of England and Scotland,” it continues. Historians also mention Anne’s role winning Britain the right to be sole supplier of slaves to Spain’s colonies of South America. But that’s enough history. We’re here to enjoy the replicas of Princess Diana’s engagement ring and Kate Middleton’s tiara, both on display in the boutiques.

In fairness, Cunard has not gone nuts on its history. Mostly the past is hinted at, through Art Deco décor. This is presumably in hope of attracting a younger clientele. A Californian travel agent told me that the likely market for the ship were people “from their late sixties to their eighties”. But someone else thought that people in their fifties could be tempted. Then again, the Queen Anne’s swimming pools are so small that you could jump in and miss — suggesting they are mostly for decoration, not actual exercise.

The Queen Anne has capacity for 2,996 passengers and 1,225 crew. That is below the Icon of the Seas’s 5,610 passengers, but bigger than the ultra-luxury ships, such as those operated by Silversea, which cater to fewer than 1,000. Presumably that creates community: whereas I bumped into Titchmarsh but wondered how often I would see him in the course of a week’s cruise.

broadway travel cruise reviews

Then, after just a few hours on the boat, I started to wonder if the real problem was that the ship wasn’t big enough. I wanted the unpredictability of the real world. I also wanted air. Padding along the corridors, I felt a nascent desire to smash open a window — if only I could find one. Finally outside, I lingered by one of the huge lifeboats and read its unrealistic warning: “Read instruction manuals before using.”

If you like walking, or a world where not everyone is always in an unchanging hierarchy, a cruise ship is a constraining existence. After a single night, a fellow traveller had noticed the limitations of his stateroom. “I called my missus. I said, you and me, in this room, for seven days — we’re having an argument.” Another woman, arriving at breakfast in the restaurant she had dined the night before, sighed to her partner: “Are we at the same table? Let’s switch seats just to mix it up.”

I sat at my breakfast, flicking through a complimentary copy of World of Cruising magazine. I certainly felt well-served yet also sure that I couldn’t relax somewhere where the only vegetation is plastic trees. I checked out, meeting half a dozen more charming staff members on the way. I stepped back on land, and was both cheered and disappointed to see the Teslas still on the forecourt.

Henry Mance was a guest of Cunard ( cunard.com ). A six-night cruise from Southampton to Rome on the Queen Anne costs from £584 per person; a nine-night transatlantic crossing costs from £769

Nationwide Travel Insurance Review 2024

Nationwide has been around close to 100 years after being founded in 1926. The Ohio-based company has many different products in the insurance and finance space, including coverage for trips. Nationwide Travel Insurance policies are available for single or multiple trips and can cover cruise trips too.

Nationwide Nationwide Travel Insurance

  • Trip cancellation coverage of up to 100% of trip costs (for cruises) or up to $30,000 (for single-trip plans)

Nationwide Travel Insurance offers many of the standard benefits you might see with a travel insurance policy. This can include things like trip cancellation coverage, so you can recover pre-paid costs or trip interruption in the event your vacation is interrupted by an unexpected event. There's also baggage delay coverage and medical coverage.

  • Cancel for any reason coverage available

Nationwide is one of the leading names in insurance across various areas of coverage including life, auto, and travel insurance. Nationwide's coverage is also as comprehensive as it is varied. It tops our list of the best travel insurance companies and best cruise travel insurance , also ranking among the best cheap travel insurance companies for the value it provides.

With single trip, multi trip, and cruise-specific policies along with an abundance of riders, there's a good chance Nationwide will have the coverage you're looking for.

That said, Nationwide lacks some of the niche coverage that other companies can provide. For example, Nationwide doesn't insure trips over 31-days long. Its annual travel insurance only applies to trips 30 days or under. Additionally, Nationwide lacks specific adventure sports coverage.

Ultimately, Nationwide is the company to beat. If you're shopping for something a little more specific, use Nationwide's quotes as your baseline as you search for something more tailored to your trip.

Coverage Options from Nationwide

Nationwide offers many of the standard benefits you might see with a travel insurance policy. This can include things like trip cancellation coverage, so you can recover pre-paid costs or trip interruption in the event your vacation is interrupted by an unexpected event. There's also baggage delay coverage and medical coverage.

The travel insurance policies offered by Nationwide are available to consumers and are divided up by the type of trip: single trip, multiple trips, or cruise coverage.

Single-trip travel insurance policies

Nationwide offers two single-trip travel insurance policies: the Essential plan and the Prime plan.

As the name suggests, Nationwide Essential travel insurance covers the basics. It offers some protection should anything happen ahead of your trip or while you're on your trip.

The Prime plan takes your coverage to the next level, with higher coverage limits and the option to add on the coveted cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage at an extra cost.

Both plans include trip cancellation or interruption coverage in the event of terrorism in your destination city, travel assistance from Nationwide at no additional charge, and refunds with a 10-day review period (except in Washington and New York). Note that for baggage and personal effects coverage, there is a $500 combined maximum limit for valuable items (see your policy's terms and conditions for details on what's considered valuable). It also covers damaged or lost sports equipment.

Here's how the two plans stack up in terms of coverage limits. For trip delay coverage, you'll be eligible for reimbursement for delays of six hours or more.

Annual and multi-trip travel insurance policies

If you're looking for travel insurance coverage for more than one trip and want to cover your partner and children, the Travel Pro Plan may be an affordable option. It's important to note that this policy only covers events after departure, not pre-departure events. This policy could be as low as $59 as of the time of writing.

The Travel Plus Plan is another multi-trip policy from Nationwide that has flexible term limits for trip interruption and cancellation coverage, up to $10,000. This covers the gaps from the Travel Pro Plan, which only covers post-departure events. So if you needed to cancel the trip due to a covered illness or other reason, this is the plan for you.

If you want to increase the level of benefits for your after departure coverage, the Travel Pro Deluxe Plan does just that. It builds on the Travel Pro Plan, hence the name, and includes higher coverage limits for just $20 more.

All plans include the same travel assistance from Nationwide that's included with the single-trip policies. Here's how the multiple-trip plans compare:

Cruise coverage

Nationwide offers three cruise travel insurance plans.

If you're going on a short cruise or going for the first time, the Universal Cruise Plan may be a good starting point if you want added protection and to recoup nonrefundable costs. Just make sure that you qualify based on your state, as cruise coverage isn't available in all states.

If you're going on a longer cruise and want added coverage to protect your trip, the Choice Cruise plan is an option to consider. And if you're looking for the most benefits and go on many cruises, the Luxury Cruise plan offers the most coverage options.

All three policies can be refunded with a 10-day review period, except in Washington and New York.

Here's a comparison of the coverage you'll get with Nationwide's three different cruise travel insurance policies:

Additional coverage options from Nationwide

Nationwide has a number of additional coverage options that can add more protection to your policy but also add to the cost as well. These include:

  • Financial default coverage , in the event your travel supplier ends up in default or bankruptcy. This is available with the Essential and Prime single-trip policies.
  • Pre-existing condition waiver, which may offer coverage for pre-existing illnesses or diseases if certain conditions are met. This is available with the Essential and Prime single-trip policies.
  • Accidental death and dismemberment, which can have limits of $5,000, $10,000, $25,000 or $50,000 depending on the plan. This is available with the Essential and Prime single-trip policies.
  • Accidental death for flights only, which can have limits of $100,000, $250,000, or $500,000. This is available with the Essential and Prime single-trip policies.
  • Rental car collision or loss coverage, in the event something happens to your rental car, you can add on this coverage for up to $25,000 or $35,000 depending on the plan. This is available with the Essential and Prime single-trip policies (except in Texas or New York).
  • Cancel for any reason (CFAR) , which must be added to a policy and is available through the single-trip Prime Plan, the Choice Cruise Plan, and the Luxury Cruise Plan.

Nationwide Travel Insurance Cost

The premium you pay will depend on various factors, including the age of the travelers, destination, and total trip costs. The  average cost of travel insurance  is 4% to 8% of your travel costs.

After inputting some personal information, such as your age and state of residence, along with your trip details, like travel dates, destination, and trip costs, you'll get an instant quote for Nationwide Insurance plans available for your trip. And from there, it's easy to compare each option based on your coverage needs and budget.

Now let's look at a few examples to estimate Nationwide coverage costs.

As of 2024, a 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 budget trip to Italy would have the following travel insurance quotes:

  • Essential: $89.55
  • Prime: $129.19

Premiums for Nationwide Insurance plans are between 3% and 4.3% of the trip's cost, well within the average cost of travel insurance.

Nationwide insurance provides the following quotes for a 30-year-old traveler from California heading to Japan for two weeks on a $4,000 trip:

  • Essential: $113.01
  • Prime: $160.47

Once again, premiums for Nationwide plans are between 2.8% and 4% of the trip's cost, within and below the expected range of travel insurance costs.

A Texas family consisting of two 40-year-old parents with a 10-year-old and 4-year-old on a two-week trip to Australia for $20,000:

  • Essential: $571.62
  • Prime: $801.94

Nationwide plans cost between 2.8% and 4% of the trip's cost, below and within the average cost of travel insurance.

A 65-year-old couple looking to escape New Jersey for Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $6,000 would have the following quotes:

  • Essential: $248.56
  • Prime: $352.44

Premiums for Nationwide plans are between 4.1% and 5.9%, which is well the average cost for travel insurance. While its certainly more expensive than coverage for younger travelers, it's on the lower end of what travel insurance companies tend to quote for older travelers.

Nationwide Annual Travel Insurance Cost

Quotes from Nationwide's annual travel insurance plans don't actually change based on age or state. You'll get a base quote of $69, which will vary based on how much trip cancellation coverage you'd like to purchase. Prices range from $155 to $729

You can also select a Pro Delux upgrade, which will cost an additional $20.

How to Purchase and Manage Your Nationwide Policy

To purchase a Nationwide travel insurance policy, you first need to obtain a quote from Nationwide's website. You should be prepared to provide the following:

  • Destination
  • Departure date
  • Return date
  • State of Residence
  • Total trip cost
  • Initial trip payment date

When you select a plan, be sure to also take a moment and scroll through the optional add-ons, such as rental car coverage.

How to File a Claim with Nationwide

If you purchased travel insurance through Nationwide and need to file a claim, you can contact a Nationwide representative. You have seven days from the start of the issue that caused loss to notify Nationwide of your claim.

Claims through Nationwide are handled by Co-ordinated Benefit Plans, LLC. You can use its claims portal or call a representative, based on your type of policy.

Nationwide refrains from promising a specific response time frame. However, customers have reported waiting several weeks before hearing any updates.

Since Nationwide offers such a wide breadth of insurance types, it's difficult to separate its travel-specific customer reviews from reviews on its other products. It received an average of 1.16 stars out of five across over 340 reviews on its BBB page, though most customers are writing about experiences with Nationwide's auto and health insurance.

On SquareMouth, a travel insurance-specific aggregator, Nationwide has an average of 4.01 stars across 570 reviews. Reviewers reported unresponsive a claims team and long wait times. Additionally, while insurance companies often engage directly with customer reviews on SquareMouth, Nationwide doesn't respond to customer reviews.

Nationwide Travel Insurance vs. Allianz Travel Insurance

Much like Nationwide, Allianz Travel Insurance insurance offers many different types of insurance coverage. While the company may be most well known for auto insurance, it offers travel insurance as well and has eight options. Allianz Travel Insurance, a major player in the travel insurance space, has 10 options listed.

Allianz Travel Insurance may offer higher coverage limits for the policies offered and have a streamlined process for filing a claim online. Where Nationwide wins out is the fact that you can add cancel for any reason (CFAR) for an added cost, whereas CFAR coverage isn't available when purchasing an online policy via Allianz Travel Insurance.

Read our Allianz Travel Insurance review here.

Nationwide Travel Insurance vs. John Hancock Travel Insurance

John Hancock Travel Insurance  is similar to Nationwide in that it provides a wide range of insurance offerings and financial services. One of those offerings is travel insurance. John Hancock travel insurance offers travel insurance through Bronze, Silver, and Gold policies.

When comparing policies, the budget option may be slightly more affordable with Nationwide. However, mid-tier and higher coverage options may be more affordable with John Hancock travel insurance. It depends on your policy, trip details, and age. One good thing is that you can add cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage under all John Hancock travel insurance plan options.

Read our John Hancock Travel Insurance review here.

Nationwide vs. credit card travel coverage

Rewards credit cards come chock full of benefits for cardholders, some of which they might be unaware of. One such perk can be travel interruption or cancellation coverage as well as rental car coverage. Credit cards may have sufficient coverage for quick trips. However, if you want the peace of mind of having solid medical coverage or higher limits, going the traditional travel insurance route may be a better fit.

For frequent travelers, credit card travel protection may be appealing as the coverage is constant. If you're looking for a comparable travel insurance plan with more comprehensive coverage, some companies offer annual travel insurance.

You can find our guide on the best credit cards with travel insurance  here.

Nationwide Travel Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed Nationwide Travel Insurance

For our review of Nationwide, we looked at the leading travel insurance providers and compared the amount of options provided, coverage limits, cost, customer service options, and flexibility.

Nationwide is a top contender for cruise-related travel insurance policies and stands out for having cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage, though it's not available with every policy and comes with an extra cost. To find the best travel insurance policy for you, review various providers and compare quotes before buying a policy.

Date of experience : April 20, 2024

Date of experience : April 15, 2024

Date of experience : April 24, 2024
