Celebrity Cruises has made it easier than ever to stay connected at sea.

When you cruise with Celebrity’s “All Included” fare , you’ll receive Basic WiFi, gratuities, and the Classic Drinks Package with your base fare.

Celebrity Cruises uses Starlink internet service for some of the fastest internet speeds at sea.

But how fast is the Celebrity Cruises internet package? And should you upgrade to Premium?

Keep reading to find out more about Celebrity’s WiFi Packages.

Celebrity Cruise Internet Package

Celebrity offers two internet packages for passengers: Basic WiFi or Premium WiFi.

Beginning November 17, 2020, the cruise line began including Basic WiFi with every cruise ticket as part of Celebrity Cruises All Included fare. With the new ticket pricing, all guests on Celebrity will receive WiFi, the  Celebrity’s Classic Drinks Package , and gratuities included with your cruise fare.

Every cruise ship in Celebrity Cruises fleet uses Starlink internet service to provide guests with high-speed internet access. The fast and reliable Starlink WiFi is a massive improvement over the traditional cruise ship internet.

Celebrity Cruises offers two intent packages, Basic and Premium WiFi.

Basic Wi-Fi

Celebrity Cruises Basic WiFi package provides access to web browsing, email, and messaging apps. It’s an excellent option for staying connected if you don’t need video calling, social media, or streaming.

It’s important to remember that the Basic internet package limits your internet usage. While you can browse for unlimited time, the cruise line throttles internet speeds and blocks access to several websites, including social media and streaming services.

Basic WiFi on Celebrity Cruises costs $20 per person per day but is free when you book through the Always included fare.

Passengers who require access to streaming services, social media, or video calls should consider upgrading to Premium.

Premium Wi-Fi

Celebrity Summit in St. Thomas

Upgrading to the Premium WiFi Package allows you to access the same web functions included with the Basic WiFi with video chat, social media, and streaming.

In August 2023, we sailed to Alaska on Celebrity Equinox. Alaska is known to have slower internet speeds, as satellite internet providers provide less service. But, thanks to Starlink internet service, we could stream Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Spotify without issue.

The Premium WiFi package costs $35 per person per day. If you purchase the Always included fare, you can upgrade to the Premium package at a discounted rate.

You can upgrade from basic to Premium, which costs $9.99 per person per day.

How Fast is Celebrity Cruises WiFi?

a woman standing on the observation platform on the top deck of a crusie ship taking a photo of the mountain landscape in the background

While on  Celebrity Equinox , I tested the internet speeds of the Premium WiFi to compare them to those of other cruise lines.

I conducted several speed tests throughout the cruise, using  SpeedTest.net  on my laptop and Android phone. I ran tests at different times of day to account for the time of day and the ship’s position.

I consistently found download speeds of 10-15 Mbps, similar to sister cruise line  Royal Caribbean’s Voom internet at sea . Remember that I tested the internet speeds in Alaska, which has slower internet connections than the Caribbean, Bahamas, or Mediterranean.

Passengers sailing in the Caribbean have reported speeds as high as 50 to 100 Mbps.

Thanks to Starlink’s internet service, the WiFi speeds on Celebrity Cruises are exceptionally fast. We could stream Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney Plus from our balcony in Alaska.

We did notice that some videos and movies took slightly longer to buffer than we are used to. However, the internet service was better than expected for a moving cruise ship sailing in the middle of the ocean receiving internet from a satellite.

How to Upgrade to Premium WiFi?

Woman using her phone on a cruise ship

If you’ve booked your cruise with the Always Included package and want to upgrade from Basic WiFi to Premium, you can do so from the  Cruise Planner .

The upgrade charge is $9.99 per person per day. It’s important to note that you can only upgrade from your cruise planner once you have paid in full.

Alternatively, you can upgrade the internet package once onboard the cruise ship. Simply visit Guest Services, and they will help get you set up.

If you have any issues connecting to the onboard WiFi, Guest Services will help you connect your device.

Is It Worth Upgrading to Premium WiFi?

Woman on her phone using Norwegian Cruise Line Internet Packages

Suppose you already have the basic internet package through the Always Included cruise fare. In that case, you may wonder if upgrading to Premium WiFi is worth upgrading at $9.99 per person per day when purchased before the cruise.

Upgrading to Premium costs $69.93 per person for a 7-day cruise.

You can upgrade your internet package by Celebrity Cruises Contact Center before your cruise or visit the iLounge when on the cruise ship.

If you plan to video chat, use social media, or stream videos, music, and audio, you’ll want to consider upgrading to the premium package. If you want faster internet speeds, upgrading before sailing is best to get the cheaper rate.

Cruise lines, like Celebrity, throttle internet speeds on the lower tier packages. Further, the cruise line blocks social media sites and streaming services for Basic WiFi users. If you want full internet service, you should upgrade to Premium.

We always upgrade to the Premium package. The premium internet plan has faster internet speeds and makes it more enjoyable to browse the web.

We just got off the Celebrity Edge (Auckland-Sydney). The premium Internet service was fast enough to let me send ALL of my photos home in a couple of hours (usually about 200 23MB RAW files). You can only be connected on one device at a time; I brought a travel router with me and that let me share the connection with my computer, two iPads, and one iPhone. I switched the connection to the phone when I left the cabin and went back to the router when I came back; it was easy to do (if you bookmark the “switch my device” page, it’s two clicks).

Celebrity Cruises internet service has improved so much with Starlink. I love the tip about bringing a travel router. I’ve never thought of using one but that’s an excellent tip!

How many devices can be used with these packages?

Last time I sailed Celebrity Cruises offered a one device package and a four device package. If you want to save money, you can use the WiFi on different devices, but only one device can be logged in at a time. So you can switch between a laptop and a smartphone, as long as only one device is logged into the Celebrity Cruises WiFi. If you try to log in while another device is using the internet package, the previous device is kicked off the internet service.

Cannot get per day price. Celebrity app 29.99 per day this site 20.00 per day other ads 29.99 less basic of 16.99 or 13.00 per day. I only need streaming on Friday for a meeting How much is it for separate days?

Hi Michelle. According to the Celebrity Cruises website, the Premium internet package is $35 per person per day. If you purchased your cruise fare through the Always Included pricing, you’d have the Basic internet package included for free. You can upgrade from Basic to Premium at a cost of $13 per person per day. If you have questions about the pricing, your best bet is to contact Celebrity Cruises as the pricing may change.

Thank you for this. I’m looking into booking my first Celebrity cruise, and it’s not easy to find this info. This article is very helpful!

Hi Bill. I’m glad you found our article helpful. Our goal is to help cruisers travel smarter and share our love for cruising.

I am booked on a cruise in the Celebrity Suite which includes the Premium Wi-Fi. Does the package include 1 or 2 devices per person? I cannot seem to find that on the web site.

In December 2020 Celebrity updated its policy so that each guest receives wi-fi for one device. If you need to use the wi-fi on multiple devices you can disconnect one device and connect to another. You are able to switch back and forth between multiple devices, but only one device can be connected to the internet at a time.

Just checked the Cruise Planner for my April 11 night on Solstice.   You can no longer buy Classic but if you get it as all inclusive you can upgrade.

So the only a la carte option is Premium?

Do they at least have 24-hour plans that can be bought on board?

The prices change all the time.  Flash sales.  Secret discounts.  Special promos.  Unfortunately this is a moving target.

Yes they do but expensive.    Last time I saw it posted it was undiscounted at $67 for a continuous 24 hours (expires 24 hours after subscription)

Celebrity Cruises drink packages: Cost, inclusions and what to know before you buy

Melinda Crow

Celebrity Cruises drink packages give you the freedom to enjoy both alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages during your cruise without worrying about the tab. Adding a beverage package to your cruise moves your vacation one step closer to an all-inclusive experience that stops the day-to-day nickel and diming for every soda, bottle of water and glass of wine.

But drink packages can get a bit confusing. Do you save money with a package, or should you stick to ordering and paying for drinks one at a time? Which drink package is part of the "All Included" cabin pricing, and is that option your best bet?

These are just a few of the questions new Celebrity cruisers (and even some veterans of the line) often ask when it comes time to consider buying a drink package for their cruise.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

In an effort to simplify choices, Celebrity Cruises offers just three beverage packages, including a Zero-Proof package for nonalcoholic drinks. To help you decide which (if any) package suits your needs and those of your travel companions, I've dug through the details and tested some of the options. Here's what you need to know before you buy.

What's included in a Celebrity drink package?

celebrity cruises internet packages prices

Celebrity Cruises' three drink packages include the Zero Proof, Classic and Premium drink packages. All of the beverage package options include bottled water (usually served in aluminum bottles to reduce single-use plastics on board), specialty coffees and teas, soft drinks and mocktails.

Your drinks may be ordered from any bar, restaurant or bar server in public areas, such as pools or entertainment venues. The packages are also valid for use on private islands like Labadee and Perfect Day at CocoCay .

With a few exceptions, each package builds on the previous (lower-priced) package. Here is what's included in each Celebrity cruise drink package.

Zero Proof (aka nonalcoholic) drink package

Celebrity offers one package for nonalcoholic beverages. It does not offer separate water-only or soda-only packages as some cruise lines do. Those drinks are included in the Zero Proof package. (You might see this package listed as either Zero Proof or Nonalcoholic on the Celebrity website and app.)

As we said before, all Celebrity drink packages include premium coffees and teas like those served at Cafe al Bacio and mocktails. The Zero Proof package also includes drinks such as Red Bull, Vitamin Water, fresh juices and smoothies at The Spa Cafe and premium waters like San Pellegrino or Evian.

This package is ideal for those who drink few, if any, alcoholic drinks, but need their morning latte or down several glasses of sparkling water or soda daily. Plus, you can enjoy vacation splurges like smoothies or frozen mocktails.

Classic drink package

The Classic drink package includes most of the nonalcoholic drinks available in the Zero Proof package, except the specialty brands like Red Bull and premium waters. You'll get all beer, wine by the glass, spirits, cocktails and liqueurs priced at $10 or less. Additionally, you get a 15% discount off all bottles of wine, which you can enjoy anywhere on board, including in your cabin.

Examples of drinks that are part of the Classic drink package are beers like Sam Adams, Corona, Coors and Alaska Brewing beers on Alaska cruises. Wines will vary depending on the location of your cruise.

Most cocktails are included in the package. They will be made from non-premium brand ingredients. Liqueurs included in the package are those with lower price tags. Think Kahlua, but not Bailey's Irish Cream or Grand Marnier.

You can still order drinks that are over the $10 limit imposed by the package. You'll simply pay the difference between the $10 limit and the cost of the drink. Some cruisers on social media have said they found it necessary on some sailings to say the word "classic" when ordering drinks in order to avoid being served a premium drink and having an upcharge apply.

Celebrity Cruises' Classic package works for most drinkers who plan to consume several drinks each day. It will cover bottled water you can take into port with you to stay hydrated during excursions and sodas for lunch while providing for most of your beer, wine and spirits needs. If you decide you want a different beer or a cocktail with a call liquor, just pay the difference.

Premium drink package

celebrity cruises internet packages prices

Celebrity's Premium drink package moves the price limit per drink to $17, which covers almost anything you'd drink on board other than higher-priced wines or a few of the pricier spirits. Premium brand waters and Red Bull are available in this package. You'll also have a 20% discount on bottled wine available to use, which can absolutely make a difference in your evening wine selections.

Examples of beverages available in this package are beers like Blue Moon, Guinness and Grolsch. Wines by the glass in the package are a step above those found in the Classic package and include Champagnes. Cocktails are made from premium spirits such as Crown Royal, Grey Goose, Bombay Sapphire and Patron Silver. The list of brandies and liqueurs expands considerably.

Many Celebrity cruisers have found it necessary to order their drinks specifically as "premium" beverages or to order by brand to avoid getting drinks made with the cheapest liquors.

The Premium package is perfect for cruisers who don't want to make money decisions when ordering a drink. If I want a shot of Godiva poured over my late-night ice cream, I don't really want to stop and wonder if it's included in my package.

Drink package fine print

Packages do not include beverages ordered from room service, bought in onboard gift shops or consumed from the minibar in your cabin.

There are no daily limits on how many drinks you can have on a Celebrity Cruises drink package, but you can only order one drink at a time. The exception to that is that you can usually request a bottle of water at the same time you order an alcoholic drink.

The drink packages with alcohol come with a caveat — all passengers of legal drinking age in a cabin must buy the same package. So, if your roomie prefers premium spirits, you must also buy the premium package. Non-drinkers can request an exemption from the alcoholic packages but must purchase the Zero Proof package instead.

What do Celebrity drink packages cost?

celebrity cruises internet packages prices

Now that you know what you can drink with each package, let's break down the costs.

The cruise line has a stated (pre-tip) price for its drink packages that include alcohol: $89 per person, per day for the Classic package and $109 per person, per day for the Premium package. However, that price fluctuates with demand. You can expect to pay more during holiday sailings and spring break. The flip side is that the cruise line frequently offers special pricing that lowers the cost.

Here are the ranges of what a Celebrity drink package costs. The lowest prices are based on previous sales.

  • Zero Proof drink package: $30 per person, per day ($36 with gratuity)
  • Classic drink package: $35 to $89 per person, per day ($42 to $106.80 with gratuity)
  • Premium drink package: $56 to $129 per person, per day ($67.20 to $154.80 with gratuity)

The gratuity is 20% and is added when you purchase the package. That eliminates any additional tip on individual drink orders unless you want to tip extra.

Related: Are cruise line drinks packages worth the price? What to know before you buy

Now, let's complicate the whole decision-making process by factoring in Celebrity's "All Included" fares .

During the booking process, after you've selected your cabin, you'll be offered an opportunity to upgrade your cruise with an All Included package that adds the Classic drink package and basic Wi-Fi for each guest in the room. It pays to compare the non-upgrade price to the upgrade, then divide the difference by the number of nights and the number of people in the cabin.

I recently found All Included upgrade prices as low as $35 per person, per night, which makes the drink package less than half price and Wi-Fi free. Once you have the Classic package in place through the All-In add-on, you can easily upgrade to the Premium drink package if you prefer.

While the listed upgrade price is $20 per person, per night, I've heard from multiple cruisers that the upgrade is sometimes offered as low as $6.99 per person, per night, making that a bargain as well. Don't forget the 20% gratuity per person, per night, that's tacked onto the price.

The best times to buy a Celebrity drink package

celebrity cruises internet packages prices

You can buy your drink package as soon as you book your cruise, or you can wait until you are on board. Which is the better plan?

If your cruise is leaving within the next few months, it's probably best to go ahead and lock in the price — unless Black Friday happens to fall between purchase and the start of the cruise. Celebrity Black Friday deals on drink packages have historically been the lowest prices available all year.

The $35 per person, per night upgrade to All Included to get the Classic drink package in my example above was during the Black Friday Kickoff sale, a full two weeks before actual Black Friday.

The Celebrity drink package that fluctuates most in price is the Premium package, so it always pays to buy it pre-cruise. Advance prices are at least 5% lower online or in the cruise line app before embarkation day.

The key to getting the best deal, either through the All Included package or buying the drink package pre-cruise, is to do the math to break down the cost per person, per night. That way, you're always comparing apples to apples, despite BOGO deals or percentages off.

Is a Celebrity drink package worth it?

celebrity cruises internet packages prices

It's time to get down to whether you are saving money with these packages or whether that even matters to you. Let's look at each package again to see how much you need to consume to break even.

This one is pretty easy to break even on. Specialty coffees average around $6 but can run as much as $10 each. Sodas are $3; water is $3-$5, depending on the brand; mocktails and smoothies are $9. One coffee to start your day, a smoothie or fresh juice with breakfast, two bottles of water for hydration, a soda with lunch, a mocktail by the pool, and another soda during the evening, and you're up to $40 per day.

Daily consumption on this package might start out similar to the sample list on the Zero Proof package: specialty coffee each morning, bottled water and soda throughout the day and maybe a smoothie. But then you'd need to drink six or more cocktails (which start at $9), beers ($6.50 to $10) or glasses of wine ($8-10) to hit the $89 base price of this package.

At the regular price, you'd either need to drink a lot of alcohol every day to break even, or really lean into the nonalcoholic beverages if you can't handle that much liquor daily. Obviously, if you can find a discounted package, you'll break even more easily. For Celebrity's Classic package to make sense, you should either be someone who enjoys a large number of drinks or who cares less about breaking even and more about creating a low-stress, more inclusive cruise experience.

The most expensive package is clearly for those who prefer premium brands in their drinks. If you're a top-shelf drinker, you won't have much difficulty consuming enough to make this package a value proposition.

This package is included with suites in The Retreat and is an easy upgrade for those who choose the All-In fares. In talking to cruisers who prefer this package, I found that many of them choose it simply to enjoy Celebrity's popular Martini Bar, which has a drink menu with almost all drinks over the $10 limit imposed by the Classic package.

As you consider which package works best for your drinking habits, be sure to factor in the ports and the itinerary as a whole. Sea days tend to be higher drink consumption days, so a seven-night cruise with two sea days may bump up your needs a bit. Stops at private islands may mean even higher consumption because you're away from the air-conditioning for much of the day. Cruises in warm weather areas like the Caribbean will increase your thirst overall.

Itineraries that might reduce consumption would be cool climate cruises and port-intensive European cruises, where you might find yourself drinking local beverages more often than not. In those cases, your onboard drinking could drop to levels below the point at which packages are cost-effective unless you get a bargain price.

Other factors to consider before you buy a Celebrity drink package

celebrity cruises internet packages prices

A couple of other factors could influence your drink needs and decision to buy a drink package or not.

The first is to remember that Celebrity does offer free beverage options. The tap water on board is drinkable; bring your own refillable bottle, and you won't need to purchase bottles of water. The buffet area and all restaurants offer free drip coffee, iced tea, hot tea, hot cocoa, milk, lemonade and punch.

Plus, each cruiser is allowed to bring up to 12 cans of nonalcoholic drinks on board on embarkation day. You can also bring a can or two back from ports with you. Your cabin attendant can keep you stocked with ice and glassware in your cabin.

You can also bring one bottle of wine per person on board on embarkation day. There is a corkage fee for opening it in a restaurant, but none if you open it and keep it in your cabin.

Related: Can I bring alcohol on a cruise ship? A line-by-line guide

If you're happy with these free options, supplemented by a couple of extra-fee drinks per day, you might save more by purchasing drinks a la carte versus splurging on a drink package.

You should also look at your loyalty status in Celebrity's Captain's Club . Starting with their second cruise, all members get one complimentary specialty coffee per cruise when dining in a specialty restaurant. So don't count that coffee in your decision.

All members also get a discount on bottles of wine. The discount starts at 10% for the newest members, then goes to 15% for Select members and 20% for Elite and up. That pretty much nullifies the benefit included in the packages for everyone with status.

The good news, though, is that all members get a discount on the pre-cruise purchase of any drink package — 10% for the bottom two tiers, 15% for Elite members and 20% for Elite Plus. Zenith members are entitled to complimentary drink packages. Captain's Club members can also access discounts on pre-cruise purchases of drink package upgrades for those who opt for the All Included fares.

Even better news is that Elite members and up drink free at most bars between 5 and 7 p.m., the official Captain's Club cocktail hour. You aren't limited to sitting at one bar, but you are limited to the choices on a special menu. It's possible to grab a glass of wine or a cocktail on your way to dinner and another on your way to a show.

The final factor might be a big one for some people. Celebrity supplies free drinks (alcoholic and non) for anyone actively playing in the casino . The caveats are that you can't get these free drinks from the bar, and catching a server in a busy casino can be challenging.

The advice I got from serious casino players is to tip the server a buck or two with every drink they bring to keep the service and the drinks coming all cruise. If you plan to spend hours in the casino, a drink package might not be necessary.

Bottom line: Is a Celebrity drink package right for you?

celebrity cruises internet packages prices

Now that you have all the details, you can decide, based on your consumption habits, whether a package is right for you. If you know you'll be drinking four or five drinks per day, plus bottled water, sodas and a smoothie now and then and don't gamble much or have loyalty status, you're likely to at least break even on a package.

Some people prefer to pay as you go. You can see each purchase in the cruise line app. If you go on a bender one night, it's easy to cut back your drink purchases the next night. Not having a package is a good choice for those who are either budgeting their money or dialing back their alcohol or calorie consumption.

The grayest area tends to be for those with Elite or Elite Plus status who also gamble. You might save money by simply bringing some of your own drinks on board and a refillable water bottle.

My own experience on a recent cruise was that the Elite happy hour drinks, along with a drink now and then in the casino, were enough for me. My husband played Blackjack for long hours and had a steady stream of his favorite beverages each night at no charge.

You can also look at drink packages from the point of view that it's simply another part of your vacation enjoyment. The three Celebrity drink packages make it simple for those who want an all-inclusive vibe on their cruise. If skimping and fretting over the cost of every latte or bottle of water isn't how you roll, pick the Zero Proof package if you don't drink alcohol, the Classic package if you aren't picky about your alcohol or the Premium package if you are.

The bottom line is that the packages aren't for everyone. Some like to splurge on other aspects of their cruise by saving on drinks. Others prefer a more complete bill for their vacation paid upfront, including all the drinks they could imagine served at their every whim.

Either way, you'll find a wide range of drink options, both alcoholic and non, from morning to the wee hours of the night. These are part of what makes a cruise vacation fun, no matter how you choose to pay for them.

Comfortable cruising

Just before COVID my husband & I booked three back to back cruises from Honolulu to Sydney, Melbourne and the Great Barrier Reef. It was the trip of a lifetime for us. Wonderful activities every day, lectures each day about the ports we were approaching and history of the South Pacific and we loved hearing about Captain Cook. Plenty of interaction with the passengers from Australia who were returning home from Hawaii after doing their holiday shopping. We learned so much by joining them at meals and hearing their recommendations for where we should visit and what we shouldn’t miss. Crossing the international dateline was a huge experience and the officers of the ship made the passengers a big dance party on one of the upper decks and fun was had by all. Except for kissing a dead fish, which a few of us did! We made some lovely connections which we still hear from via email. We’re booked again in March on Beyond with friends. Can’t stay away too long. Celebrity is our go-to cruise line for a perfect vacation!

I like the room with balcony and the bathroom is bigger than princess cruise. The room services staff was very nice. The dining room is set up nice and roomy and perfect view. The 14 floors buffer food is ok and not much change. Wish could have more variety food to select. Not much Asian food and few staffs seems tired and not much welcome or happy to serve food to guests. The main restaurant food is good, not much activities to celebrate in the dinning during holidays. I don’t feel the festive or holidays decorations in the dinning room. Not much going on for gift shops for the sale like princesses cruise for the fun of the shopping spirit. The lobbies areas are highlighted for the holidays, lots of music and entertaining and bars. Area for seating is plenty and the shows are great. The photo shop is much self service, the staff need little bits of cheering and enthusiastic of happy. I like the 15 floors for the exercise followed by the trails to walk or running. The gym room has good size and not humidity. I wish they could highlight some the activities program on the daily news paper and on TV or announce on over head speaker. I did not see much games or Chinese mah jong activities supplies in the social room or other areas for the guests to relax playing with there family. Over all I do enjoyed my trip and certainly with my families members gathering. But once comes with individual or solo, i was boring little bit.

the Celebrity App

I think this is one of the best ways to get all your information imputed, book shore excursions, book dining reservations and and purchase anything extra, and especially the how easy it's made the lifeboat drill!! I have been sailing with celebrity for 35 years and have sailed on 33 cruises exclusively with Celebrity and I remember since the Meridian and earlier ships how I dreaded the check in process and remember how time consuming it was which long lines with luggage in hand just to get to the area of the cruise port terminal to check in. I think the app is very easy to use and helpful and it has brought the cruising experience to the next level! I look forward to my 1st cruise day because I know we will me processed and on the ship within a half hour of getting to the cruise pier!! Thank you Celebrity and all your staff, MaryAnn & Scott Stulpin (Elite Plus Captains Club Members)

  • View St. Petersburg Cruises

There’s no destination on a Scandinavian cruise that’s more mysterious and enduring than St. Petersburg, Russia. An enigma of historic and religious sites and the birthplace of of some of literature’s greatest works, here you’ll explore museums housing some of the biggest and best art collections in the entire world. St. Petersburg is an intellectual city, a cultural capital where arts, music, and creativity thrive despite the bitter winters. May to July brings about the White Nights, a short time in St. Petersburg where the sky is completely lit up throughout the entire day, making late spring and early summer a prime time to visit St. Petersburg.

Make a day of museum hopping from the Hermitage Museum onto the Dostoevsky Museum, finishing the afternoon off at the Russian Museum. If church tours are more your thing, check out the ornate domes of the Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood, or take photos of the beautiful Nikolsky Cathedral. Vodka tastings? You bet Russia’s most famous export is alive and well in St. Petersburg, too. Whatever you fancy, Russia’s cultural capital will captivate you on your St. Petersburg cruise.

With the safety of our guests and crew always our top priority, we are removing St. Petersburg, Russia from upcoming itineraries in 2024, due to the current situation in Ukraine. Our thoughts are with all who are impacted by this conflict.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to st. petersburg, hermitage museum.

There are over 350 rooms in the world-renowned Hermitage Museum, so you’ll find it impossible to see everything in the short time you have there. When you cruise to St. Petersburg, Russia, come here with a plan on how to see your favorite artists and time periods on display here.

Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood

Elaborate and breathtaking, this Russian Orthodox cathedral is one of the most recognizable sights in all of St. Petersburg. The mosaics and colorful domes are what the cathedral is famous for, along with it being the site of an assassination attempt of Tsar Alexander II. Beauty and Russian history collide as you explore the church.

Russian Museum

Even if you were previously uninformed about Russian art, the Russian Museum is the perfect primer for the local art scene. Spend the day perusing the museum at your leisure, then bring all sorts of art history tidbits back to the ship with you.

Peterhof Palace

This set of palaces and gardens is yet another example of St. Petersburg’s opulence. Meant to invoke a similar reaction as the Palace of Versaille, Peterhof stands up to the hype. It’s open from 9am to 7pm Sunday through Friday, and closed Mondays.

Learn More About St. Petersburg Shore Excursions

Top things to do in st. petersburg, tour the palace of rasputin’s famous murder.

The elaborate Yusupov Palace along the Moyka River was built for Russian aristocracy in the late 1700s, and it encapsulates the art and culture of Russia at the time. Don’t miss a tour through the very castle where Rasputin was assassinated. It’s a harrowing place where you’ll quickly get a taste of the wealth and status of the day.

See the Winter Palace

The Winter Palace also comprises part of the Hermitage Museum, but you could easily spend your entire time there simply walking the colorful grounds, where the palace glitters in gold and teal blue. Russian emperors lived in the Winter Palace from the 1700s until the 1900s.

Explore the Dostoevsky Museum

Famous Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky lived in St. Petersburg for much of his life, and the Dostoevsky Museum was erected in the apartment where he lived from 1878 to 1881. Today, you can walk in his footsteps and experience his apartment for yourself. It’s a must-see for literary types and fans of Russian literature.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the St. Petersburg Cruise Port

Address: Nevsky Prospekt 47, St Petersburg

Classic Russian cuisine comes with a side of history at Palkin, which was also the site where famous Russians like Dostoevsky, Tchaikovsky, and others once sat and broke bread together. Try the fried foie gras, the salmon caviar, or the boar and venison dumplings. Adventurous, filling dishes are the name of the game here.

Address: Petropavlovskaya St., 4, St Petersburg

You might not have tried truly authentic Russian food before, but Chekov is the place to change that. Inside, you’ll feel transported back to the 19th century, though the menu is decidedly modern. Try the marinated brandy trout fillet or the chicken liver pate. Delicious dumplings, called pelmeni , are stuffed with meat and made in-house daily.

L’Europe Restaurant

Address: Mikhaylovskaya Ulitsa, д. 1/7, Saint Petersburg

Located within the Grand Hotel Europe is a fine dining experience like no other in St. Petersburg. It’s one of Russia’s oldest restaurants, which only adds to the charm of getting to spend an evening here. Sunday brunch is a favorite. Every Wednesday, dancers and performers move to the classical sounds of Tchaikovsky during the dinner service. There is a wine-pairing menu as well as an elaborate seven-course menu including dishes like duck confit, salmon tartar, red caviar, and a four-cheese tortellini.

Culture & History of the St. Petersburg Cruise Port

Tsar Peter the Great founded the capital city of St. Petersburg in 1703. Ever since, St. Petersburg has become a cosmopolitan hub for arts, culture, and style. Famous authors like Nikolai Gogol and Dostoevsky were inspired and influenced by their times living in the city, which is immortalized in their literature. Though the climate was harsh and the winters almost unbearable, St. Petersburg remained a place where immigrants and visitors flocked to for hundreds of years. Today, it’s the second-largest city in Russia behind Moscow, home to a population of over 5 million people.

St. Petersburg Port Facilities & Location

When your cruise to St. Petersburg, Russia docks in port, you’ll have to quickly go through immigration before continuing on to explore everything the city has to offer. The port, called the Marine Facade, is a passenger port equipped to handle wide berths and plenty of cruise traffic.

Transportation in St. Petersburg

The metro system in St. Petersburg is comprehensive and runs daily until midnight. Otherwise, biking and taking a taxi or shuttle bus from the port into the center of town are great bets for getting around during your St. Petersburg cruise stop. It’s about a 30-minute drive from the cruise port to the city center, or around 45 minutes to get to the Hermitage Museum.

Shopping Near the St. Petersburg Cruise Port

You won’t be hard-pressed to find some of Russia’s enduring souvenirs, from famous nesting dolls to Russian vodka, chocolate, and other goods that tourists love to take back home with them. These souvenir shacks and stands are scattered throughout the city, making it easy to shop when you feel like it. But St. Petersburg isn’t all kitschy wares. There’s also a growing boutique shopping scene here, like the impressively large Galeria or a smattering of vintage shops selling clothes dating back to the days of the Soviet Union.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The local currency in Russia is the rouble (stylized as R), and you’ll find credit and debit cards are used all over the place here. Still, it’s handy to have a little bit of cash in case you need it. ATMs are widely available, too. Tipping your taxi driver isn’t expected, but you can round up or leave behind a few R if you’re particularly happy with the service you received. At restaurants, leaving 10% is customary.

Carnival follows Royal Caribbean in making a major cruise change

B ooking a cruise can be challenging because every cruise line uses different pricing models and promotions. Virgin Voyages, for example, includes most non-alcoholic beverages and a basic internet connection in its core offering.

MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Celebrity Cruises sell some of their cruises as a package including a variety of things. The packages, however, can be very different. Celebrity, a Royal Caribbean ( RCL ) brand, includes internet and a beverage package, as does MSC, while Norwegian offers more of a pick-your-perks promotion where passengers could opt for specialty dining or excursions as part of their package.

Related: Carnival follows Royal Caribbean in making a major cruise change

Both Royal Caribbean and Carnival sometimes offer kids-sail-free promotions. Kids, of course, sail free when that's being offered, but they're still passengers, and while "free," they're still charged taxes and port fees.

Cruise lines generally don't include taxes and port fees in the price they advertise for a cruise. That's something that the state of California took issue with passing an "Honest Pricing Law" which requires companies to disclose nearly every mandatory fee.

It's not a law aimed at cruise lines, but the cruise industry will have to comply in California. Royal Caribbean and Carnival will take things a step beyond just complying in California.

Royal Caribbean and Carnival change their pricing practices

Each cruise passenger pays taxes and port fees whether they get off the ship or not. Cruise lines, like pretty much every business, have generally advertised using the lowest top-line pricing possible, prices that do not include taxes and port fees, which generally range from $100-200, although they could be higher on a port-intensive itinerary,

Royal Caribbean shared an email to its travel agent partners on May 14 that shared a major change to its pricing policies.

"Starting July 1, Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises will comply with California’s new law – and will do so nationally. This means that whenever Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises advertise, display, or offer pricing to consumers on any channel, anywhere in the United States, the price shown will include the cruise fare as well as any taxes, fees, and port expenses that guests will be required to pay as part of their cruise," the cruise line shared in the email.

That will result in people booking a cruise seeing higher prices upfront, but knowing that there won't be any surprises when they checkout and pay for their cruise.

Be the first to see the best deals on cruises, special sailings, and more. Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter.

Silversea Cruise, a third Royal Caribbean brand, will not need to make any changes, because its prices already include all required taxes, fees, and port expenses.

Carnival making its own changes

Carnival will also change its pricing nationally, not just in California.

"Our total advertised price will now include all government-mandated taxes, fees, and port expenses that we previously itemized separately for consumer awareness. While this is a California state law, we are making this change nationwide to ensure our advertised pricing is consistent no matter where guests shop for our cruises," a Carnival spokesperson shared with Travel & Leisure .

The change has not happened yet for either cruise line, but are expected to roll out soon.

Disney Cruise Line already includes port fees in its advertised prices. MSC Cruises and Virgin Voyages do not sail out of California. Norwegian Cruise Line does but has not shared its plans to comply with the law.

ALSO READ: Carnival follows Royal Caribbean in making a major cruise change

Cruise lines do not have to advertise fares including "mandatory" gratuities, because technically, in most cases, passengers can opt to take those off their bill. The new California law only includes fees that people must pay so they know the true price before they make a purchase.

Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter to save money on your next (or your first) cruise.

The new law will impact hotels which often have mandatory added fees that are not charged when a room is booked but are charged when the customer checks in.
