Champions tour: jerry kelly wins shaw charity classic in playoff over john huston, share this article.

Although it took an extra hole, Jerry Kelly continued his stellar season Sunday.

The 55-year-old captured his fourth PGA Tour Champions title of the season at the Shaw Charity Classic at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He and John Huston were tied at 9 under following 54 holes, but Kelly birdied the par-5 18th on the first playoff hole to add another victory to his resume.

He had a lengthy putt for eagle from the back of the green, which he lagged to about 4 feet. He then poured in the birdie and gave a big first pump toward the crowd.

Kelly, who also won the Bridgestone Senior Players earlier this year, shot a 3-under 67 in the final round. The victory moves him to second in the Charles Schwab Cup standings. Kelly had rounds of 68 and 66 during the first two days.

Huston fired a 5-under 65 on Sunday to make the playoff. Five golfers tied for third, one stroke out of the playoff. Joe Durant shot the round of the day, an 8-under 62, to finish at 8 under for the tournament, along with Padraig Harrington, Dean Wilson, Alex Cejka and Kirk Triplett. Triplett held the solo lead after the second round at 7 under.

Marco Dawson and Shane Bertsch rounded out the top 10, finishing in a tie for eighth at 7 under.

Up next, the Champions Tour travels to the Boeing Classic at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge in Snoqualmie, Washington.

2024 Wells Fargo Championship final results: Prize money payout, PGA Tour leaderboard and how much each golfer won

T he 2024 Wells Fargo Championship final leaderboard is headed by winner Rory McIlroy , who earns his fourth PGA Tour title in this event with a win at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C.

The Ulsterman earned his second PGA Tour win on the season on the back of a final round of 6-under 65, including a double-bogey at the last hole, to win by five shots on 17-under 267.

Xander Schauffele finished a distant second after having early control of the final round and throughout much of the tournament.

Ben An finished in solo third place, three shots back of Schauffele.

McIlroy won the $3,600,000 winner's share of the $20,000,000 purse.

Wells Fargo Championship recap notes

McIlroy earned 65 Official World Golf Ranking points with the win in the 72-hole stroke-play championship, which helps his place in the world ranking.

McIlroy earned 700 FedEx Cup points, with the PGA Tour points offered at the Signature level for this event.

A total of 68 (of 69) players finished the tournament after a 36-hole cut was not made in this event.

2024 Wells Fargo Championship leaderboard: Rory McIlroy dominates Quail Hollow to win second straight start

Mcilroy locked in throughout the back nine on sunday to pull away from xander schauffele in charlotte.

He's done it again. Rory McIlroy has entered the winner's circle for the 26th time in his PGA Tour career. Surging past Xander Schauffele on Sunday at Quail Hollow Club for a five-stroke victory at 17 under, McIlroy continued his dominance on the par-71 course, claiming his fourth Wells Fargo Championship title and third worldwide win of the calendar year. 

With the win, McIlroy moves into a share of 22nd with Henry Picard for most wins on the PGA Tour and is now only two wins away from entering the top 20. McIlroy's victory in Charlotte also represents the third time in his PGA Tour career that he has won in consecutive starts.

One of those occurrences came in 2014 when McIlroy won The Open, WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the PGA Championship in a three-tournament stretch. That PGA Championship victory a decade ago marks his last major conquest, and the tension of his return to Valhalla next week has only heightened with his latest win.

"Going to a venue next week where I have won, it feels like the stars are aligning a little bit, but I've got a lot of golf to play and a lot of great players to try to beat next week, but I'm going into the next major of the year feeling really good about myself."

The 35-year-old entered the final day at Quail Hollow one off the pace of Schauffele, who was aiming to become the first player in tournament history to win in wire-to-wire fashion. McIlroy threw the first punch with a towering drive over the trees, cutting the dogleg right effectively in half. His approach settled 4 feet from the pin, and the two walked off the green all squared.

There was some seesawing back-and-forth on the front nine with a counterpunch from Schauffele landing on the par-5 7th in the form of his second eagle on that hole for the week. It was exactly what Schauffele needed to push his lead to two, but it was also exactly what McIlroy needed to put it in high gear.

"That was a big moment on seven where I three-putted and Xander made an eagle," McIlroy said. "Xander was inside me on eight, and I knew I really had to hole that putt just to keep up with him, and then he missed his and I birdied nine and then I just went on a run that, for whatever reason, I am able to go on at this golf course."

McIlroy carded a birdie on the drivable par-4 8th, a birdie on the difficult par-4 9th and rolled in a 33-foot eagle on the par-5 10th to take the lead on his own. He didn't look back from there. A couple nice par saves were followed by a pair of birdies and another eagle on the par-5 15th.

Schauffele struggling with his wedge play, McIlroy ran away and opened a six-stroke lead. After walking off the seventh green down by two, McIlroy played his next eight holes in 8 under and clipped Schauffele by eight during this stretch and gave him the leeway to cruise through The Green Mile for yet another title at Quail Hollow. Grade: A+

Here are the grades for the rest of the notables on the leaderboard at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.

2. Xander Schauffele (-12): This one is going to hurt. Paired in the final group on Sunday for the fourth time this year, Schauffele had the look early that this time was going to be different. He connected from 12 feet  -- his longest made putt of the week -- for eagle on the par-5 7th to grab a two-stroke lead with 11 holes to play. It was all downhill from there as McIlroy steamrolled Schauffele, who wasn't able to take advantage of missed greens by McIlroy on 11 and 12. Instead of gaining ground, Schauffele actually lost some. That just about did it for Schauffele, who experienced 60+ holes of solid golf only to be outdone by the champion. Grades: A-

T8. Max Homa (-4): It was a quiet top-10 finish for Homa marking his second straight in this tournament. He was brilliant where you would expect him to be as he picked up strokes on approach and made his fair share of putts. If you had to pinpoint the one shortcoming this week, it was his driver; he hit only 27 fairways across his four rounds. He got away with it at Quail Hollow, but he won't have the same luxury at Valhalla where he goes for his third straight major top 10 following his run at the Masters. Grade: B+

T16. Collin Morikawa (-1): It was a bit of a mixed bag for the two-time major champion at Quail Hollow. While not a player one would pinpoint as a great course fit, Morikawa made the most of his early week iron prowess and entered the weekend on the first page of the leaderboard at 5 under. Like others, he backtracked over the weekend with a couple over-par rounds as his approach play fell off with the golf course drying out. He led the field in driving accuracy and ranked inside the top 15 in strokes gained putting. If he does that next week and has his iron play in tow, Morikawa should contend in his second straight major. Grade: B

T29. Jordan Spieth (+2): Guess what? It was another weird week for Spieth. After opening with rounds of 69-71, Spieth sunk down the leaderboard with a Saturday 76 that included eight bogeys. The good news? Spieth is driving the golf ball maybe as well as ever, which will be huge for his PGA Championship and career grand slam aspirations. The bad news? Spieth's iron play has not been up to par, and his nagging wrist injury continues to be a factor. Grade: C

  T47. Wyndham Clark (+7): The defending champion carded four straight over-par rounds and never put his imprint on this tournament. Clark's boom-or-bust nature continued this week as he now has zero finishes from fifth place through 25th-place to go along with his four podium results this season. The reigning U.S. Open champion should be fine moving forward and is in good enough form to contend at the PGA Championship, but it's tough not to chalk this week up as a disappointment. Grade: D

The lead is now seven!

Xander drops a shot and Rory McIlroy eyes a personal best. McIlroy won in 2015 here by seven strokes and could be on his way to besting that number. The tournament record is also 19 under where McIlroy stands with two to play.

The 106th PGA Championship returns to Valhalla this week. Here are some of the big storylines.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KDKA) -- The PGA Championship returns to Valhalla Golf Club for the fourth time as the tournament is set to get underway this week.

Here are some of the big storylines ahead of the 106th playing of the PGA Championship. 

Brooks Koepka eyeing his sixth major

Last year's defending champion is looking to win his sixth overall major, which would move him into a tie for 12th place all-time alongside names like Lee Trevino, Nick Faldo, and Phil Mickelson.

Koepka heads into this week's tournament after winning at Oak Hill last year and finishing tied for 17th at last year's U.S. Open before a suboptimal showing at last year's Open Championship and this year's playing of the Masters. 

Rory's decade-long drought

It's coming up on nearly a full decade since Rory McIlroy last won a major. Ironically enough, McIlroy's last major win came in 2014 when he won the PGA Championship at none other than, you guessed it, Valhalla. 

This will surely be a massive talking point this week for one of the giants of the game. 

McIlroy has had numerous close calls in recent years, finishing 2nd at the Masters and U.S. Open and 3rd at the Open Championship all within the last 13 months. 

In his last ten major tournament appearances, McIlroy has seven top-ten finishes and has only missed the cut once. 

Rory heads into the PGA this week in fine form with wins the last two weeks at the Zurich Classic alongside fellow Irishman Shane Lowry and at the Wells Fargo Championship on Sunday. 

Michael Block back in the limelight

Michael Block made all of the headlines a year ago when he made the cut at Oak Hill, finding himself paired with Rory McIlroy for the final day of the tournament.

He was the ultimate crowd favorite and made a hole-in-one with the world watching.

He wasn't done yet though, as he converted an exceptional up-and-down par on the 18th hole to earn his way into this year's tournament at Valhalla. 

Scottie Scheffler no longer on baby watch

So far this season on the PGA Tour, no one has been able to stop Scottie Scheffler. 

The #1 ranked player in the world, Scheffler  won the Arnold Palmer Invitational  and  The Players Championship in March  before winning  the Masters  and the  RBC Heritage last month.

There was talk heading into The Masters and this week that the pending birth of his first child might be the only thing able to keep him off of the course and outside of the winner's circle.

At Augusta National, Scheffler Baby Watch was on as his wife Meredith was prepared to go into labor and Scottie said he would leave the course and be there, no matter where he was at in the tournament. 

Baby Watch continued on over the past few weeks, but the watch has ended, as Meredith and Scottie are celebrating the birth of their child.

Scheffler will be in the field at the PGA Championship this week and gunning for his third major. 

Tiger Woods in the field

A past champion at Valhalla, Tiger is in the hunt for his 16th major this week at the PGA Championship. 

Woods was out on the course for a practice round yesterday sporting a goatee that we didn't see earlier this year. 

His arrival at Valhalla comes on the heels of last month's Masters tournament where he made his 24th straight cut. 

Woods has won four PGA Championships in his career with his last coming in 2007 at Southern Hills. 

Justin Thomas back in his home state

One of the fan favorites this week will surely be Kentucky's native son, Justin Thomas. 

Born and raised in Louisville, Thomas was a standout youth and high school golfer before playing his college golf at the University of Alabama. 

A two-time winner of the PGA Championship in 2017 and 2022, Thomas is eyeing his third major championship and would surely love to do so in front of a home crowd. 

Valhalla's fourth time hosting the PGA

Valhalla has played host to major championships before, hosting the PGA Championship three times -- in 1996, 2000, and 2014.

The Jack Nicklaus-designed course opened in 1986 and will play just over 7,600 yards for this week's tournament. 

In past years, the tournament was held in August, but this will be the first time Valhalla hosts the PGA in May. 

When does the tournament start?

The opening round of the PGA Championship will get underway on Thursday. 

Tee times and pairings haven't been announced yet.

Jimmy Dunne, who last year helped negotiate the PGA Tour's controversial framework agreement with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, resigned from the tour's policy board on Monday.

In Dunne's resignation letter, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN, Dunne wrote that "no meaningful progress has been made towards a transaction with PIF" and that "my vote and my role is utterly superfluous" now that player directors outnumber independent directors on the policy board. Dunne's resignation was effective immediately.

"It is crucial for the Board to avoid letting yesterday's differences interfere with today's decisions, especially when they influence future opportunities for the tour," Dunne wrote. "Unifying professional golf is paramount to restoring fan interest and repairing wounds left from a fractured game. I have tried my best to move all minds in that direction."

Along with PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, Dunne and policy board chairman Ed Herlihy secretly negotiated the framework agreement with the PIF, which is financing the rival LIV Golf League. Monahan and PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan announced the deal on June 6. Most PGA Tour players -- including some player directors -- were unaware of the deal until it was announced on TV.

The framework agreement expired Dec. 31, but the sides have continued to try to negotiate a deal. Monahan and player directors, including Tiger Woods , met with Al-Rumayyan in the Bahamas on March 18.

At the Masters in April, Woods said the meeting was productive.

"I don't know if we're closer, but certainly we're headed in the right direction," Woods said. "That was a very positive meeting, and I think both sides came away from the meeting feeling positive."

The PGA Tour did strike a deal with Strategic Sports Group, a consortium of billionaire American sports team owners and others, to invest up to $3 billion into PGA Tour Enterprises, a new for-profit entity.

In a memo, obtained by ESPN Monday night, sent to Tour golfers, Monahan addressed the developments, saying "I'd like to thank Jimmy for his steadfast service to this organization since he joined the Board in January 2023, not to mention his countless contributions to the game of golf that span decades."

Monahan, in the memo, also added "we continue to make meaningful progress behind the scenes in our negotiations toward a potential agreement with the PIF. Our goal remains to deliver the best possible outcome for the PGA Tour, our players, partners, tournaments and fans," before concluding that "out of respect for the PGA Championship, we will not be making any additional public comments on this matter."

Dunne, a Wall Street dealmaker, testified about the tour's potential deal with the Saudis in front of the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations on July 11. Monahan was taking a leave of absence for health reasons at the time of the hearing.

Dunne suggested in his resignation letter on Monday that he had been cut out of the negotiations with the Saudis. His resignation comes less than a week after PGA Tour star Rory McIlroy told reporters that certain people on the policy board were "uncomfortable" with him returning to the board .

McIlroy resigned from the policy board in November. Player director Webb Simpson was prepared to step down -- if McIlroy replaced him to help get a deal done with the Saudis.

Along with Woods and Simpson, the player directors are Patrick Cantlay , Jordan Spieth , Adam Scott and Peter Malnati . Former tour member Joe Ogilvie is a board liaison.

On Thursday, the tour announced that former Valero Energy Corp. CEO Joseph W. Gorder had been elected to serve as the inaugural chairman of PGA Tour Enterprises' board of directors and that McIlroy would be part of a transaction committee that would handle the tour's negotiations with the PIF.

Gorder, now executive chairman of Valero Energy's board, also will serve on the transaction committee, along with Fenway Sports Group founder and principal owner John W. Henry, Monahan, Scott, Woods, McIlroy and Ogilvie.

Dunne and Herlihy were left off the transaction committee.

"Players have lost trust in the board because of the backdoor deals and the governance," one PGA Tour member, not authorized to formally speak on the situation, told ESPN on Monday. "The more players are getting involved, the more they realize things aren't being run like they want -- from the top down. The players have told the rest of the board they want to run it and don't trust the board. When you lose faith in the head guy, none of the players are going to pay attention anymore."

Dunne did not respond to ESPN's request for comment.
