Combine a visit to the fascinating Karen Long Neck People (Padaung) as well as visiting Chiang Rai Province and The Golden Triangle meeting point of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar. After pick up from your Chiang Mai hotel your first stop will be Mae Khajan hot springs a good spot to take a morning cup of coffee before heading up towards the stunning Wat Rong Khun often named The White Temple due to its dazzling white colour inlaid with mirrored glass. We will then proceed to another famous colour themed temple, Wat Rong Suea Ten where the architecture features an abundance of blue both on the outside and inside of this fascinating temple. After the temple visits we will continue up to the Golden Triangle where you will have the option of a boat trip across the Mekong River to the Laos side of the border. The tour will proceed to Mae Sai the Thai border town with Myanmar this is a good spot for some shopping, local dry foodstuffs, and Chinese imported goods are all in abundance here. You will also get a glimpse of Myanmar itself with it only being situated a mere ten meters away across the river. On the return leg to Chiang Mai, we will stop at the Karen Long Neck village to observe close up this fascinating hill tribe group living in northern Thailand.

2. The Black House Museum is currently being substituted for Mae Sai Market on this tour as the market has not fully recovered/opened after the covid pandemic. But the tour will revert back to Mae Sai Market once it is fully open again. 3. Update: August 2022 Laos authorities are not allowing visitors to get off the boat on the Laos side due to local covid restrictions which are still in place. This will likely change for bookings later in the year. But no date has been given when this restriction will be lifted.

Karen Long Neck Villages In Thailand:

Location :  Various village locations between Chiang Mai and the Golden Triangle ( Best seen with a tour group ). Cost :  To add a village visit onto a group tour it is usually 300-500 Baht a person.  The authentic villages are typically free to enter as the locals make money selling their crafts to tourists. Fun Scale :  9 out of 10

Visiting one of the numerous Karen Long Neck villages in Thailand is one of the most exotic experiences on the planet.  The mystery and beauty that sound the tradition of using brass rings for exaggerated jewelry is something better seen in person than in a book.  We had ethical questions on if it these hill tribe villages would feel like human zoos, but thankfully we decided to visit anyway.  It is a real-life National Geographic Magazine experience to have to see to believe.

Who Are The Karen People?

The Karen are a tribal group who have historically lived in the hills in Myanmar ( formerly Burma ) side of the Thai border. Best recognized for their elongated necks, the Karen women wear heavy brass rings around their necks, forearms, and shins. While the Karen men are mainly field workers and farmers, the women have a rich history of crafting from wood carving to weaving. Overall the Long Neck Tribes live a rugged, tedious, and simple lifestyle, but the fruits of their labor are colorful and very lively.

There are still around 40,000 Karen members today, but thousands have had to flee Burma over the decades due to political unrest. Fleeing to Thailand was a very safe choice for many, but the ones that came are largely illegal immigrants and do not have options for gaining Thai citizenship. While things are much better for the Karen that have fled from Burma, the lack of opportunity for the Long Necks has confined the groups to small pockets separate from most of modern Thailand.

On one hand, it is beautiful they have been able to keep their traditions alive and on the other, it is a struggle to balance the new world with the old. A visit to a Karen tribal village as a tourist isn’t without its own ethical questions ( which we’ll touch on below ), but in the end we are very glad we made our visit as it was an experience straight out of National Geographic Magazine.

Why Do The Karen Have Long Necks?

While it may seem that the Karen women have unusually long necks, their traditional brass rings actually smash their shoulders and rib cages down just making their necks seem longer.  The brass rings, which are also around their shins and arms, are made out of one solid piece of metal making them quite heavy.  Each time a woman adds a ring to her neck she is fitted with a new neck piece that coils around and around.  During our recent visit, there were multiple women with over 25 rings on their necks.

Why Do The Woman Do It?

The biggest reason why the Karen women put themselves through the neck lengthening routine is simply tradition.  While there are some of the women that need to stick with the tradition to make money since they are refugees, there are some of the women that do it just to hold onto their heritage.  In the early days of the Long Necks, the practice of the brass rings was started not just for beauty, but also to protect against tigers and in some cases even just because the village leader said he preferred it.

Today many of the young Karen women are breaking with tradition and it is estimated that the neck lengthening practice only has a few generations of life left.  When we visited the Karen many of the young women only had a couple of rings if any at all.

Is It Ethical To Visit -or- A Human Zoo?

Whether you are visiting the Karen Long Necks or other Hill Tribes the is ethical part of it is bound to come up.  Even we were a bit standoffish on making a visit at first as we were concerned if it would feel like a human zoo, but surprisingly it was a very pleasant experience.  We bypassed the large tourist market villages and went further into the country with a group of about 10 people not knowing what to expect.

When we first arrived each woman was stationed by her own hut ferociously working on knitting looms and it initially felt a little bit like a staged atmosphere.  Things changed in a hurry the second we set our cameras down and started directly interacting with the Karen women.  It was amazing how quickly it transformed from feeling like we were gawking to actually being able to connect with the locals.  The woman really came to life the second we broke the ice and as we later found out it was because most tourists just snap some photos, buy a couple of things and leave.  In short, it will only feel like a human zoo if you make it feel like one.  Talk to the women and ask about the goods they are selling, because the second you are able to overcome gawker mode you’ll start to feel really happy you made the visit.

How To Visit A Karen Village:

If you are in Chiang Mai, the  Baan Tong Luang Village  is the easiest place to visit and features a 5 Hill Tribe exhibition village.  The exhibition village isn’t as authentic as the more rural stand-alone villages, but it will give you a great opportunity to learn about the different Tribes and you can get there by taxi.  Three of our favorite Tribes to visit here are the Hmong ( Meo ), Big Earring ( Akha ) and the Karen Long Necks ( Paduang ).  You’ll be able to take photos with the women and we encourage you to buy unique souvenirs from them.  The location of the village can be found on  this map  as Stop #20.

While the basic exhibition village near Chiang Mai is accessible by taxi, you’ll need to join an organized tour to visit the other Karen Long Neck villages in Northern Thailand.  Many of the large permanent villages are far off the beaten tourist track and the smaller satellite villages can move from time to time so you’ll want a local guide that can get you to the correct place.  Normally a good guide will not only know where to find the Karen, but will have preferred visit times to get you in with fewer tourists, and will give a portion of their profits directly to the village if you are paying an admission fee.  The tour guide that we used was  Chiang Mai Travel Hub  and they were pretty good although they try to cram too many things into each day trip.

We recommend the private tour and don’t let them talk you out of skipping any parts of the tour for more time at another stop, instead try to see everything you can.  The private tour will free up 30-60 minutes of time compared to the public group tour as you won’t be waiting on strangers and will have plenty of time to see everything.

Consider Staying Overnight:

If you really want to feel truly comfortable with visiting the Karen Long Necks, an hour of walking through the village won’t cut it and you really should consider staying overnight.  The ultimate experience is to book with a company that lets you stay overnight in an authentic village instead of just stopping by the staged marketplace village.

Other Hill Tribes In Thailand:

While the main tourist draws among the Hill Tribes of Thailand are the Karen Long Necks ( Paduang ), there are also many other groups with their heritage.  Some of the other groups have been living in Thailand for centuries and include the Big Earring ( Akha ), Yao, Palong, Kayor, and Hmong ( Meo ).  These other groups largely have better-established villages than the Karen Long Necks do, but are still known for their own unique traditions.  These traditions range from heavily belled clothing to large gauge earnings stretching out their earlobes.  The Hmong people as an example have many huge villages including a top at the top of mountains you can visit with some effort from Chiang Mai.

Also near Chiang Mai, there is a 5 Tribe exhibition village and shops set up near the Tiger Kingdom where you can meet traditional members of multiple tribes at once.  This experience isn’t as authentic as going to a real village, however, it is a lot more easily accessible for most tourists.

Should You Visit a Long Neck village ? 

The Karen (Kayan) Long Neck villages in Chiang Mai are one of the major tourist attractions in northern Thailand. However many travellers choose not to visit because of the conflicting information online about the ethics of visiting this tribe. Many tourists choose not to visit the Long Neck villages because they do not want to support the exploitation of this tribe, or because the villages are ‘fake’ and have been ‘set up’ for the purposes of tourism.

In this article, we present to you all the information surrounding these issues so that you can make an informed decision yourself as to whether or not to visit the Long Neck tribe. We will cover everything from the background of the Karen (Kayan) Long Neck in Thailand to how you can visit ethically.

Visiting the Karen (Kayan) Long Neck in 2023

Who are the karen (kayan) long neck.

The Kayan Long Neck tribe are a sub-group of the Red Karen (Karenni people) from Myanmar. They are sometimes called Kayan Lawhi, Padaung or more commonly the ‘Long Neck’ people.

Where are the Long Neck from?

The Kayan Long Neck tribe are a Tibeto-Burmese ethnic group, who are originally from Myanmar/Burma, and are not native to Thailand. All of the Kayan Long Neck who live in Thailand have crossed the border as refugees from Myanmar. Most of them have fled persecution to seek safety and refuge in Thailand.

The history of Long Neck Villages in Thailand

In the late 1980’s many of the Kayan tribe fled political persecution and conflict in Myanmar. They crossed over the jungle borders and many arrived in Mae Hong Son province. As such, refugee camps were set up for them and one part of it was designated for the Long Neck people. Over time, this evolved into a tourist site which was able to generate it’s own revenue and pay for the maintenance costs of the village and its refugees.

The Kayan Long Neck villages in Thailand are therefore not ‘real’ or native villages. However, these villages offer the Long Neck people a livelihood and source of income. When the villagers sell their handicrafts and souvenirs to tourists they are able to earn an income. Inside the villages, it is very peaceful and the Kayan Long Neck do not pressure tourists to buy their handicrafts.

Do the Long Neck women want us to visit ? – Yes !

How exactly do the Long Neck women feel  about tourists coming to visit them ? Over the years of taking tourists around northern Thailand, and developing friendships with the Long Neck villagers, we’ve had the unique chance to ask them how they feel about tourists coming to visit them. We uncovered many truths …. we discovered that they are not forced to wear the rings for tourists, and that they are able to choose of their own free will. In fact, we know many young ladies who have decided not to wear the rings anymore. For those that choose to continue wearing the rings, it seems they do so, because they feel a sense of identity through these rings, which is inextricably linked to their culture, their heritage, their family and ultimately who they are. We also discovered that many are happy for tourists to visit, because this provides a vital source of income for them , without tourists, their quality of life would be much poorer.

It’s important to note that Long Necks are not native to Thailand , they are all  refugees here, who have fled persecution from their homeland of Myanmar. With refugee status, their freedom is restricted, employment is largely prohibited, and opportunities bleak. So, once we dig a little deeper, and look a little closer, we see that the everyday reality of Long Neck tourism is quite different from face value reports online. So, if you do decide to visit, how can you make sure your visit is ethical ?

Reasons to Visit the Long Neck

Many travelers question whether they should visit the Karen Long Neck and if it is ethical to do so. We believe that travelers should visit the Kayan Long Neck tribe, because visiting them is a way to support their existence here as refugees in Thailand. We know many Long Neck villagers, many of whom have been separated from their families due to the war in Myanmar. When asked about tourism and their circumstances, the resounding answer is that at least they are safe here in Thailand. When faced with the prospect of death and war, it seems that tourism is really the much better alternative. So whilst it may feel strange to you as a tourist to visit this tribe, the Long Neck villagers are probably just happy to be in the safety of the villages here in Thailand.

Kayan Long Neck tourism, also became controversial because people were concerned that the villagers were forced to wear their rings, however many Long Neck villagers have chosen to stop wearing their rings and are allowed to do so. During the quiet seasons and during the global covid pandemic, there were no tourists to the villages and the Kayan Long Neck suffered greatly. As such we believe that you should visit the Kayan Long Neck tribe – your visit supports their status and safety in Thailand.

How to visit the Karen (Kayan) Long Neck ethically

To make sure your visit benefits the villagers directly, you can purchase souvenirs or handicrafts from them. This represents an important source of income for them.

When we visit a Long Neck village on our tours, we enlist the services of a village Long Neck guide.  Your guide will walk you around the village and you will have the opportunity to ask her questions. This is a great way to learn firsthand about the Kayan Long Neck tribe and transforms your visit from being purely observational, into a culturally engaging, and mutually beneficial one.  In return, the Long Neck village guide earns a fee and is able to practice her guiding skills and communicating in English.

Where can you visit Long Neck villages in Thailand ?

There are Karen Long Neck villages in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son provinces in northern Thailand.

At the time of writing in 2023, there are currently two Kayan Long Neck villages that you can visit in Chiang Mai. The first one is in Mae Rim, and the other one is in Mae Taeng. The entrance ticket is 300THB. They are approximately 30 minutes drive north of Chiang Mai city. Note – Before covid there was another larger village called ‘Baan Tong Luang’ which is now closed.

There is a Long Neck village in Nang Lae district in Chiang Rai. This village feels quite commercialised compared to the Long Neck villages in Mae Hong Son. Perhaps because it is a stop-off point on the popular 1 day tours from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai.

In Mae Hong Son there are two Karen Long Neck villages. There is Huay Pu Keng village which is around 20 minutes drive from Mae Hong Son town. This village feels more authentic than the demonstration villages in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Once you walk past the handicraft stalls and houses at the entrance, you are able to go deeper into the village, walk around and observe village life.

If you travel with us, we will reach the village by taking a long tail boat on the Pai river. It’s a great way to enjoy the nature and scenery on the verges of the Thailand/Myanmar border. We also offer the chance to stay overnight in the village at a Kayan Long Neck homestay (staying with a Kayan Long neck family in their traditional bamboo stilt house).  This is an amazing opportunity to learn first-hand about the Kayan people and their fascinating way of life. They offer many community–based-tourism activities such as handicraft workshops and learning to cook with villagers. Tourists pay the villagers directly for these workshops and their services.

The other Long Neck village in Mae Hong Son is ‘Huay Sua Tao’ this is a smaller village which feels a little more commercialised than Huay Pu Keng village. The entrance ticket for this is 250THB/person.

Which village should I visit ?

Every Long Neck Village in Thailand has its own look and feel, based on various factors such as size and location. From our experience, the most authentic experience you’ll get of the Kayan Long Neck tribe is by visiting Baan Huay Pu Keng  village in Mae Hong Son. The Long Neck carry out their normal daily lives here, and the village functions like almost any other hill tribe village in Thailand. It has its own kindergarten, church, and daily activities. It’s as close to a ‘natural’ functioning village as you’ll get.
