After lunch, we arrive at Luxor. The next two days will be fully loaded with Biblical history! We enjoy a full afternoon tour visiting Karnak to see the site of the Biblical battle with Pharoah Merneptah that took place at Ashkelon. Also at Karnak, we will see the Kiosk of Taharqa, named Biblically in 2 Kings 19:9 and in Isaiah 37:9. We will also see the fantastic reliefs of Seti the1st’s battles in Biblical Canaan and Syria. There is a specific relief that states “the Shashu have no regard for the laws of his palace.” This is referring to the Semitic peoples of which Jacob’s family was identified.

Day 6: Royal Valley of the Kings, Luxor, and Deir el Bahri Breakfast aboard the ship and then depart for The Valley of the Kings. We will see the treasures of the tombs, including King Tut’s tomb and several other important tombs. Next, we will visit the grand funeral temple of Hatshepsut, where some scholars believe that Moses may have contributed to elements of this temple. We will have lunch at a local restaurant. This afternoon we visit Ramesseum, Medinet Hab, and also see the relief of Amenhotep II in a striking scene that some scholars claim was from his death at the Red Sea. Later this afternoon, we spend time at Luxor Temple. Depart Luxor at 6:30 PM for Cairo. Dinner.

Day 7: Cairo, Giza, Sphinx, Egyptian Museum with King Tut’s Exhibit and Mummy Room This morning we visit the Giza Plateau, the Sphinx, and its Dream Stele. You will even have time to ride a camel! We will lunch together and then visit the Egyptian Museum, see its Mummy Room and King Tut exhibit, Tanis Exhibit from Shoshenq II, etc. Afterward, we will walk through the Khan el Khalil Bazaar. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 8: Biblical Lands of Goshen, Zoan, Tanis, Ramses, Avaris Today we will travel to the area of Egypt that was the focus of Moses’ Psalms 78:12 and 43. We will drive north of Cairo and visit Zoan, also known as Tanis. This is where Moses would have performed the miracles of God that freed God’s children. Biblically, this city in Egypt in the  Nile Delta  is discussed in Numbers 13:22. It says that it was built seven years after Israel’s Hebron was built. Hebron is the oldest Jewish community in the world. Psalm 78:12,43 identifies the "field of Zoan" as the location at which Moses performed miracles before Pharaoh to persuade him to release  Israel  from his service. When we are at the Egyptian Museum, the fascinating discoveries that were made in 1939 will be shown to you. Afterward, we will also visit the Biblical cities of Ramses and Avaris. You will learn the story of how the German archeologist Bietek was able to uncover another layer that has the fingerprints of Yahweh’s children underneath. We will have lunch at a local restaurant, returning to Cairo in time for dinner near the airport and then your 8:00 PM flight to the Red Sea.

Day 9:  Sharm el-Sheikh, Land Bridge Crossing Site, Red Sea A day to sleep in! Wake up on the spectacular Red Sea. Enjoy a lush buffet breakfast and time to regroup on all you have seen. If you are a snorkeler, this morning you can sign up for a snorkel trip on the Red Sea, or you can extend your time here and do a full dive. At 2:00 PM, you will be picked up and taken to the site where you can see the land bridge that the Hebrew children may have walked on between Egypt and Midian during the miracle where God used Moses to part the Red Sea. Afterward, you will be able to walk around the village of Sharm el-Sheikh before returning to the hotel for an early dinner.

Day 10:  St. Catherine’s Monastery, Sinai Peninsula Wake this morning, where you will be met and transported across the desert. The drive is roughly 3 hours. On arrival, there are 750 steps to the monastery. The goal for many is to see the sunrise from the monastery. If you wish to leave later in the morning and bypass sunrise, that is also an option. In addition, if you have trouble walking, there are methods of transportation to get you to within about 400 feet of the monastery itself. This monastery is rich in precious Biblical and extra-Biblical manuscripts that date back to the 6th century. It is known as one of the world’s best libraries for manuscripts. The site is considered the “traditional” site where Moses spoke with God from a burning bush. Only The Lord Himself can tell us exactly which mountain but it has been identified by Helena, Constantine’s mother at the time that the other key sites were named, including but not limited to the Church or Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. After lunch and a private time of worship and quiet, we return the 3 hours back to Cairo.

Day 11:  Transfer to the airport Most flights depart in the very early hours. You will be met at your hotel and transferred back to the Cairo airport for your departure.

Day 3: Visit Coptic Cairo & The Virgin Mary Tree - The Shadow of Jesus-Lunch

Breakfast at the hotel and be ready to visit the Place of the Holy family in Cairo, the Coptic Cairo or as Egyptian call it (Old Cairo) contained within the boundaries of the Roman fortress of Babylon where the Copts built their churches for protection. For three hundred years, from the conversion of Emperor Constantine until the arrival of Islam, Egypt was a Christian nation, and the Coptic church is one of the oldest communions as well as the church that really pioneered austere monasticism in the remote desert. There are still tens of thousands of Copts in Egypt, many of whom live in Old Cairo.

Their most famous church is that of El Muallaqa, the Hanging Church , built over one of the gateways into the old fortress, its nave suspended above the passageway. Also in Old Cairo the Saint's Sergius church has The Crypt where the Holy Family took shelter during their flee to Egypt, also there is the synagogue of Ben Ezra. (Under restoration) Once home to many Jewish families, few now remain scattered throughout Cairo. There has been a religious building on this site (initially a church, then a synagogue) since at least the 4th century, and the present synagogue houses a Torah on gazelle skin that dates to the 5th century BC. This whole area is a world-famous destination for Pilgrims after that have your lunch then Off the beaten path and head to the Virgin Mary tree ( under construction) in the Matarya district, For decades, the site has attracted thousands of pilgrims because it is said to have offered shelter for the Holy Family during their stay in Egypt at the beginning of the Christian era. According to the fifth-century Coptic Pope Theophilus, Joseph possessed a wooden walking stick that the infant Jesus broke into pieces. Joseph then buried the pieces in Matareya, and when he placed his hand on the ground a spring burst out beside a sycamore tree that provided shade and respite for the Holy Family. The pieces of the buried stick then flourished and emanated a pleasing scent. Jesus drank from the spring and numerous balsam trees grew on the spot. The famous Arab historian Al-Maqrizi later described the Holy Family’s journey in Egypt in the mid-15th century and mentions that they had settled in Matareya by a stream. He recounts how when the Virgin Mary washed Jesus’s clothes in the stream, the water flooded the nearby land where balsam trees began to grow. Al-Maqrizi adds that the balsam oil from the trees was prized for use in baptism. It is said that as the Virgin Mary, Joseph, and the child Jesus tried to escape from two brigands who were pursuing them, the trunk of the sycamore tree also miraculously opened its bark, allowing them to hide inside, escaping detection. The tree is said to have medicinal properties, which is why its branches have been depleted by pilgrims. Nearby, the spring where the Virgin Mary is said to have bathed Jesus is also part of the miracles of the place because of its healing water. After that back to your hotel in Cairo.

Day 4: Off the Beaten Path Visit Wadi El Natrun Monasteries-Monks of the Desert-Lunch

A new day in your Holy Family tour in Egypt and your breakfast at the hotel then with your guide you will visit Wadi El Natrun monasteries. Located 100 km from Cairo, Wadi El-Natrun (Valley of Natrun Salt) is an area that is widely known as one of the cradles of ancient Coptic monasteries in Egypt. These monasteries include relics of several saints, ancient churches, as well as murals, paintings, and stories dating back years ago. Due to several attacks on the monks and the monasteries in Wadi El-Natrun, out of 700 monasteries, only four have survived to date. The Monastery of Saint Bishoy is one of the most popular monasteries in Egypt. Founded by its namesake, this monastery contains the relics of many saints, including Saint Bishoy himself. At the time, Berber tribes from the west repeatedly attacked monasteries, especially in that area. This is why a draw bridge was built for them to use as security whenever they were attacked. Saint Mary Coptic Orthodox Monastery (The Syrian Monastery ‘El-Sourian’) Located nearly 500 meters northwest of the Monastery of Saint Bishoy, this monastery was founded by a group of monks from Saint Bishoy in the sixth century. It was initially called the Monastery of Saint Mary Deipara, and later the Syrian Monastery because there was a time when the Syrian monks settled there with the Coptic monks, forming a mixed community. The monastery includes a mysterious cave that has a rope tied to its roof, which St. Bishoy used to tie his beard so he would not fall asleep while praying. Saint Mary (Al-Baramos) Monastery, as was founded by Saint Macarius the Great in 335 AD, several sources say that this may be the very first monastery in Wadi El-Natrun, where Saint Macarius lived and devoted himself to monastic life. Walls were built around the monastery, to protect it from possible attacks by the Berbers and Bedouins. The Monastery of Abu Makar , spreading across an area of more than 11 square kilometers, this monastery was also built by Saint Makarius, who was known as the father of the monks in Wadi El-Natrun. This monastery is famous for its discovery of the relics of Saint John the Baptist and prophet Elisha, which took place during the restoration of the big Church of Saint Macarius. Please note that some of the monasteries may be close for renovations, after your visit head to Alexandria city upon arrival have your lunch then check in your hotel, overnight at Alexandria

Today the spring is still brackish and there is no tree in sight, but seven of the original 12 springs still exist after that, Saint Catherine's Monastery upon arrival has dinner and stays overnight at The holy Valley Hotel, some rest and be ready to climb Mount Sinai ( your choice to stay at the hotel) at about 1:00 AM. Day 7: Climbing Mount Sinai & Visit to Saint Catherine's Monastery-Lunch & Dinner

In the early morning start climbing Mount Sinai, Mount Sinai traditionally known as Jabal Musa is a mountain in the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt. It may possibly be the same as the biblical Mount Sinai, the place where, according to the Bible, Moses received the Ten Commandments , after that back to your hotel have your breakfast then some rest enjoy your visit to Saint Catherine's Monastery, The Greek Orthodox monastery of the God-trodden Mount Sinai is located at the very place where God appeared to Moses in the Burning Bush, beneath the Mount of the Decalogue (The Ten Commandments) In the providence of God, it is at this site also that the holy relics of Saint Catherine are enshrined. This is the oldest continuously-inhabited Christian monastery, with a history that can be traced back over seventeen centuries. The monastery predates the divisions of the Christian world, its origins extending to late antiquity. The monastery has never been destroyed in all its history, and thus it can be said to have preserved intact the distinctive qualities of its Greek and Roman heritage. Members of other Christian confessions have honored the monastery, coming as pilgrims to this holy place. But from its beginnings, the Christian inhabitants of Sinai belonged to the Greek-speaking world, and it has remained so to this day. The earliest description refers to the Monastery of the Holy Virgin, for the revelation of God at the Burning Bush was seen as a type of the Virgin Mary and the Incarnation. The monastery is also especially dedicated to the holy prophets Moses and Elias, who both came to this mountain, and who both spoke with Christ at the Transfiguration. More recently, it has been known as Saint Catherine’s Monastery. This remains its name today, though the monastery has not lost its earlier dedications, after this spiritual visit back to your hotel. One of the most striking features of the Red Monastery is its elaborately decorated interior, featuring vibrant and well-preserved frescoes and intricate Coptic artwork, plus its colossal walls that resemble the ancient Egyptian temple, which is also surrounded by cavetto moldings. These paintings depict biblical scenes, saints, angels, and intricate geometric designs, providing a glimpse into early Christian art and Coptic culture. It remains inhabited by a number of monks today.

Saint Barbara Church Complex - Christian Monuments and Monasteries in Egypt - Egypt Tours Portal

The Coptic Orthodox Church of St. Barbara is one of the magical churches found in Coptic Cairo and stands as one of the revered Coptic Orthodox parishes. It's an ancient structure with origins tracing back to the 5th or 6th century AD found on the eastern part of the Babylon Fortress. Just east of the Church of Abu Serga and north of the Coptic Museum. Throughout its history, the church has undergone multiple rebuilds, notably in the 11th century. It is dedicated to martyrs Abu Kir and Yohanna, later adapted to house the remains of St. Barbara, it now comprises two distinct churches found on the same location. Athanasius, a scribe under Abdel-Aziz Ibn Marwan, was the person behind the construction of the church between 685 and 705 AD, and evidence suggests parts of it could date back to the 4th century. Between the years 1072 and 1073 AD, the church was fully restored, and many relics of Saint Barbara were housed in her sanctuary found in the church.

Throughout its history, it suffered damages, notably fires in the 12th, and underwent various renovations, with the most recent extensive renovation occurring between 1910 and 1922. The church houses numerous precious items, some of which are now in the nearby Coptic Museum. The architecture of the church follows a basilican structure with a tripartite sanctuary, resembling the design of Abu Serga nearby. The church complex includes a convent and a school built by the renowned architect Ramses Wissa Wassef. The layout consists of an entrance, narthex, nave, aisles, and three sanctuaries, with the middle one dedicated to St. Barbara. Notable features include marble columns separating the nave and aisles, a semi-circular choir, and a medieval ambo dating back to around 1300. the southern aisle houses several icons depicting various religious scenes, including representations of the Virgin Mary, Jesus as a child, Jesus entering Jerusalem, and the baptism of Christ.

The church is renowned for its rich history and religious significance. It's a place of pilgrimage for Coptic Christians and attracts visitors interested in exploring Egypt's Christian heritage. The site houses ancient relics, icons, and artifacts that hold cultural and religious importance within the Coptic tradition. The architecture of the Church of Saint Mercury reflects a blend of traditional Coptic design elements with influences from different historical periods due to multiple renovations and rebuilds over the centuries.

Monastery Of St. Simeon - Christian Monuments and Monasteries in Egypt - Egypt Tours Portal

The Monastery of Saint Simeon is a magnificent 7th marvel which is dedicated to Anba Hedra, a local saint who turned to monasticism on his wedding day and evolved into its current form in the 10th century when it was rededicated to St. Simeon. It was constructed with stone at the lower level and mud brick at the upper level, surrounded by high walls. This monastery once accommodated up to 1000 monks but suffered partial destruction by Saladin's troops in 1173. Its basilica retains faint frescoes, while monk cells feature mastaba beds and Muslim pilgrim graffiti en route to Mecca.

The complex was fortified against Bedouin raids, which appeared more fortress-like than religious. Inside lie remnants of a church, stable, and other essential structures for the monks' simple lives that evoke a medieval ambiance. Close to the monastery is a collection of beautiful attractions, which include the Tombs of the Nobles, Kitchener's Island, Elephantine Island, and more marvelous hidden gems filled with many epic historical tales.

Christian Tours in Egypt

Christian tours in egypt.

A tree thought by many Egyptians to have provided shade to Mary, mother of Jesus while the family was in Egypt

These types of tours will not only visit various ancient churches, but other locations where the Jewish Exodus or the Holy Family was thought to have stopped, or which might be mentioned in the Bible. However, many other such tours are likely only to visit various ancient churches and monasteries.

This brings us to the question of which churches and monasteries are most important for this type of tour. It should be noted that many of the most interesting of these are active churches and monasteries of ancient origin. Active sites bring a certain cultural dynamic to the visit that simply cannot be found in viewing ruins only. Some people may have developed an interest in a specific location, but in general, many of the most important sites are actually somewhat conveniently located in or near Cairo . One could, in fact, spend a considerable amount of time on a Christian oriented tour just inside Cairo. Of course, the main attraction is Old Cairo , mostly within the Fort Babylon District where there are a number of fine, ancient Egyptian Christian churches, together with the Coptic Museum, and even an old Jewish temple known as Ben Ezer . This is the oldest section of Cairo proper, with walls that were built by the Romans. Here, one can find the Hanging Church (El-Muallaqa) , which is perhaps the most famous single Christian church in Egypt. And while we may not include them in our list of the most important stops, there are also a number of ancient Churches not too far away at Haret Zuwaila. It should be noted that many, many classical tours include the churches and monasteries at Fort Babylon as part of their tours. All of these churches and monasteries are active.

The Roman Walls of Fort Babylon in Old Cairo

Outside of Cairo , the closest Christian monument is the Monastery of St. Jeremiah at Saqqara , which was an important religious site, but is now uninhabited. This site is only a few miles outside Cairo, and is also a stop on many classical tours because of the pharaonic importance of Saqqara and its early pyramids. Otherwise, though perhaps not considered as particularly major religious sites, there are nevertheless important monasteries in the Fayoum Oasis , a little more south of Cairo. Needless to say, one could spend a number of days visiting these sites that are in Cairo, or only a day trip away.

The Monastery of the Syrians at Wadi el-Natrun

After these sites, the next important site not far from Cairo is Wadi Natrun , which is a couple of hours northwest of Cairo, just to the west of the Delta, and which could also probably be arranged as a day trip. Here, there are four active ancient monasteries with intriguing histories, along with several ancient uninhabited ruins of monasteries . This was a very early site of monastic occupation not just in Egypt, but the world. In fact, on the way to the site, careful planning may allow one to also take in Kellia , where very early Christian hermits began to evolve into monastic orders. Otherwise, there are a few monasteries also located near or around Alexandria on the north coast, including Abu Menas between Alexandria and Wadi Natrun and Enaton Monastery between Alexandria and Mersa Matruh , both of which are uninhabited.

Part of the Ruins of the Monastery of St. Jeremiah at Saqqara

However, in wrapping up religious sites in northern Egypt, Old Cairo , St. Jeremiah and Wadi Natrun are the sites that should probably be on every Christian religious tour. After these, probably the most visited religious sites are the Eastern Desert monasteries of St. Anthony's and St. Paul's , and St. Catherine's Monastery in south central Sinai . St. Anthony's, as well as St. Paul's, have been the focus of recent restorations, and are very nice to visit. St. Anthony's, notably, was not built by, but was dedicated to the founder of Christian monasticism. Anthony was really more of a hermit, though he had many followers. St. Paul apparently lived nearby St. Anthony, and became one of his most trusted friends.

Monastery of St. Anthony in the Eastern Desert

There are, however, several more monasteries that any dedicated Christian Religious tour should probably visit, some of which are of considerable importance. Notably, there are the White Monastery and the Red Monastery near Sohag , which are popular among tourists. However, it should be mentioned that this region of Egypt was, and is an active area for Christians, and a number of other monasteries can be visited near Sohag (such as the Monastery of St. Matthew the Potter ), as well as somewhat north of Sohag at Asyut and El Minya . However, one should also note that these monasteries, along with those in the Wadi Natrun and the Fayoum , will usually require a specialized religious tour as they are not destinations on most classical tours .

Monastery of St. Simeon near Aswan

Monastery of St. Simeon near Aswan

Several other monasteries in southern Egypt that can be visited during a classical tour , though they are frequently not included on the itinerary, are those at Aswan . The best known one of these, and one that is sometimes included on more extensive tours, is St. Simeon , which usually includes a short camel ride to visit. This is an uninhabited monastery, as is another near Aswan known as the Monastery at Qubbat al-Hawa .

The Monastery at Qubbat Al-Hawa

Yet, these are not the only Christian sites that may be visited in a standard classical tour , provided one is aware. For example, while none of these would be considered major Christian sites, there are a number of ancient pharaonic sites on both the East and West Bank of Luxor that were made into churches or monasteries (along with some sites that were not originally pharaonic). For example, even some of the tombs on the west bank were, at one point, converted into churches, as were sections of both the Luxor and Karnak Temple complexes . Several of the other popular pharaonic temples were also made into churches along the Nile.

Interior of the Church of St. Cosmas at the Seven Girl's Monastery in Egypt's Sinai

While there are well known religious sites connected to the Jewish Exodus in the northwestern Sinai , probably the most visited, best known and most important site is that of St. Catherine's Monastery and Mount Sinai , adjacent to the monastery. This is really one of the most interesting monasteries in all of Egypt, as well as one of the most popular among tourists who manage to make it to the Sinai . The Sinai is frequently an add-on to classical tours , and when it is, St. Catherine's Monastery is frequently a part of the itinerary. Though less well known, and certainly not as grand, these tours will frequently also visit the Seven Girls Monastery (at Wadi Firan, the largest oasis in the Sinai). It is actually a dependency of St. Catherine's and while not as impressive, is nevertheless a peaceful, interesting stop.

While we believe that we have here provided information on the most well known, as well as the most important Christian sites that may be of interest to religious Christian tours, there are, of course, many churches and monasteries that we have not mentioned, which may in fact be of interest to visitors. Frankly, our sections on Monasteries and Churches provide information on a number of them, but there are many others which we have simply not been able to yet research (though we may soon do so).

Monastery of Saint Matthew the Potter in Middle Egypt

One way or the other and regardless of whether one is Jewish, Christian or Muslim, Egypt's religious heritage places it firmly in the Holy Land and provides many unique opportunities. Some of the churches and monasteries are of very early date, which is not surprising, and of course, many events that are important to all of these religions took place in Egypt. Furthermore, while many classical tours primarily visit pharaonic sites, but also have on their itineraries a limited number of later religious sites, many religious tours, because of the proximity of religious sites to pharaonic sites, will include a visit to the latter as well.

Steps leading to the Church of Saint George in Old Cairo

Like classical tours , Religious tours can also have add-ons with extensions that depart Egypt for other areas of the Holy Land. These days, they typically do not visit Israel due to the troubles of that region, but likely one can still find a few tours that do. More frequently today, religious tours that leave Egypt include Jordan, which has many important, mostly Old Testament related sites.

As for tour operators, they come in all flavors. Many Christian tours, unlike classical tours , may be sponsored by specific churches or religious organizations outside of Egypt. It is not unusual for an individual church to promote such a tour. However, these tours, one way or the other, are arranged and conducted by Egyptian land tour operators once inside Egypt. Land tour operators in Egypt who develop these tours may, in many cases, simply be normal, large organizations that also provide classical and other types of tours. At other times, they may be smaller, more specialized operators. Our experience has been that the smaller operators are perhaps sometimes a little more fervent than their larger brethren; a little more passionate about this type of tour, and often run by Egyptian Coptic Christian s. On the other hand, larger organizations are well equipped to provide these tours with professional guides and sometimes better facilities such as busses. Keep in mind though, that smaller organizations frequently lease their busses and are usually quite capable of providing a comfortable tour.

One final note, however. At most popular pharaonic sites in Egypt, it is not untypical or unexpected to find tourists very casually dressed, sometimes in shorts, and often with more scant clothing. One should keep in mind that, particularly in the case of active religious sites, whether Muslim, Christian or Jewish, more conservative clothing is appropriate. Do not wear shorts to these sites, or for that matter sleeveless shirts and blouses. The idea, particularly for women, is to keep skin to a minimum, and while these rules have always been told to visitors of Mosques , they are equally important to visitors of active churches and monasteries.

4. Mount Sinai in Sinai Peninsula

This mount is located on Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. Sunset here is one of the most wonderful views you will ever see. Moses received God’s Ten Commandments on this mount. The height of this mount is 7,497 feet or 2,285 meters. Around this mount, there are higher peaks you may want to visit.

One of those wonderful peaks is Mount Catherine which is 8,625 feet or 2,629 meters high. Mount Catherine is the highest peak among many peaks in the Sinai Peninsula. When visiting Mount Sinai, you need to visit the chapel. That chapel encloses a rock you’ll really want to see.

That rock is considered the source for the Tablets of Stone, something mentioned in the Bible as the medium used to write the Ten Commandments.

5. Nile River

This is a major river that flows into the Mediterranean Sea. This is the second-longest sea in the world, after the Amazon River. Nile River was the location where Pharaoh’s daughter bathed in and rescued Moses. The Nile was not only the most important river in Egyptian history and Christian history.

Interested in exploring the Nile? There is a Luxor and Aswan Nile Cruise tour package or Cairo to Luxor Nile Cruise tour package. Both of them are going to bring you to many spots around the river. You will be able to visit various spots while enjoying comfortable stays on the cruise.

The cruise will bring you to Hatshepsut temple, Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple, Kom Ombo Temple, Unfinished Obelisk, Edfu Temple, and Philae Temple.

6. Heliopolis (On in the Bible)

Heliopolis is a city in Egypt. The name of Heliopolis was taken from the Greeks which means the City of the Sun. That name was given to the city since Heliopolis is the center of sun worship in Egypt. Heliopolis was the home of Asenath, the wife of Joseph when he was sold by his brothers to Egypt.

Asenath herself was the daughter of priest Potiphera, a priest of Ra, the god of the sun. This city was also mentioned by Jeremiah and Ezekiel in their books. You will have to book a tour package that brings you to Cairo, and especially Heliopolis to explore the modern city of this biblical place.

In order to book the most fascinating biblical tours of Egypt itinerary , you need to explore our website at exodustravel.net or contact us at +20 120 250 0027 . Sacred Marvels: Exploring Christian Monuments and Monasteries in Egypt

Sacred Marvels: Exploring Christian Monuments and Monasteries in Egypt

Today, we will talk about the Christian Monuments and Monasteries in Egypt. When it comes to religion in Egypt, most of us tend to think either of the current dominant religion (Islam) or, especially in terms of tourism, of the ancient religion. The beliefs of god-king Pharaohs, the afterlife, and the concept of multiple deities fascinate most of us and is often a tourism focal point. However, what you may now know is that Christianity also played a large role in Egyptian history and still does today.

The Christian religion has an interesting history in Egypt. It has changed and adapted over time but ultimately survived over thousands of years. Amid the bustling streets of Cairo and out amid the wind-blown sands of the desert you will still find Christian churches , monasteries, and monuments; many of which are still working and in use today.

For those interested in learning more about Christianity in Egypt, and the monuments and monasteries that you can still see and visit, this article is for you.

Christianity in Egypt

The arrival of christianity in egypt.

Christianity is said to have been brought to Egypt by the Apostle Saint Mark shortly after the death of Jesus Christ.

While the arrival of Christianity in Egypt was not entirely without conflict, many Egyptians quickly accepted and adapted to this new religion. This was in part due to timing, but also because Christianity and the ancient Egyptian religion had many similarities.

Christianity arrived in Egypt at a time where the old belief system was falling apart. The god-king Pharaohs had been dethroned and the Roman Empire had swept into the country. While Christianity was new and different, there were many similar aspects that the Egyptians understood. Concepts like the death and resurrection of a god and the belief in an afterlife; a paradise where good and faithful souls would be rewarded.

Furthermore, the sign of the Christian cross was very similar to that of the Egyptian Ankh and, of course, the belief that God chose Egypt as a hiding place for baby Jesus was a source of pride for many Christian Egyptians.

Christianity in Egypt Today

Today, Christianity is the second largest religion in Egypt (the dominant religion is Islam). The majority of the Christians are Coptic Christians, and it is estimated that there are somewhere between 20-30 million followers of this faith in Egypt alone. In fact, Egypt has the largest Christian population in the Middle East and North Africa.

Christian Monuments and Monasteries in Egypt

Unsurprisingly given the history and current status of Christianity in Egypt, the country is home to a number of Christian churches, monuments, and monasteries. Many of which can be visited during your Egypt trip .

While Christian monuments and monasteries don’t tend to be the focus of most escorted tours of Egypt , you can customize your vacation and ask to include some of these sites in your private tour packages of Egypt .

Here are some of the main Christian monuments and monasteries in Egypt that you may be interested in seeing for yourself.

Hanging Church of Cairo

The hanging church in old Cairo is actually called the Saint Virgin Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church. It’s one of the oldest churches in Egypt and is thought to date back to the 7 th century, although there was another building located on the same site that dates as far back as the 3 rd century.

The Hanging Church gets its nickname because of its appearance. The church itself is built above a gatehouse of a Roman-built fortress, and the nave is suspended over a passageway making it appear as if the church is hanging above. While the site is impressive today, it was even more impressive in the past when the ground level was several meters lower.

The Hanging Church, one of the most famous Christina Monuments in Cairo, Egypt

The Hanging Church in Cairo is not just historic and unique in its appearance, but it’s also one of the most religiously significant churches in Egypt. It was designated as the official residence of the Coptic Orthodox Pope in 1047. Several patriarchs chose to be consecrated, elected, and enthroned in this church and it is known as a site for several different apparitions of the Virgin Mary.

Today, tourists are welcome to visit the Hanging Church. Admission is free and the church is open from 9am to 5pm every day. Coptic Mass is held from 8am-11am on Wednesdays and Fridays and from 9am-11am on Sundays.

Abu Serga Church

Abu Serga is another historic church located in Cairo. Also known as Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church, it is believed that Abu Serga was built either in the 5 th or 8 th century. This church is dedicated to two Martyrs named Sergius and Bacchus who were Roman officers that were killed and martyred after it was discovered that they were both secret Christians.

It is also believed that Joseph, Mary, and baby Jesus stopped in the spot upon which the church was built after they fled to Egypt. As such, for most visitors, the main draw of Abu Serga is the crypt where the Holy Family is said to have rested.

The Church of Saint Barbara

Dating back to the 5 th or 6 th century, the Church of Saint Barbara is another historic church that can be found in Cairo. Like most of the other Coptic buildings in Cairo, it was rebuilt multiple times- the most notable of which was during the 11 th century.

The Church of Saint Barbara was originally dedicated to St. Cyrus and St. John, two martyrs who were worshipped for their healing powers. However, documents dating back to the 13 century say that relics of St. Barbara were moved and kept here, hence its current name. This church is known for its precious items which included bible caskets, two-door panels, and ancient icons, most of which now can be found in the nearby Coptic museum.

Monastery of Saint Simon

The Monastery of Saint Simon is one of the most unique Christian sites in all of Egypt, and also the largest Christian church in the Middle East.

The Monastery of Saint Simon is located in what is referred to as ‘Garbage City’ which is within the limits of metropolitan Cairo. The official name for this area is Manshiyat Nasser, and the majority of people who live here are Coptic Christians known as the Zabbaleen. They collect garbage from Cairo’s residents (for a fee) and bring it back to their neighbourhood to sort and find recyclable goods.

It was the Zabbaleen that built the Monastery of Saint Simon in a cave within Garbage City. Saint Simon was a tanner from the 10 th century, and this monastery built in his name can seat up to 20,000 people. There are also separate church spaces built within the surrounding caves, creating a large Christian complex within Garbage City.

While this part of Cairo isn’t exactly known for tourism, hundreds of thousands of people still make the pilgrimage to this monastery every year.

Saint Catherine’s Monastery

Officially known as the ‘Sacred Monastery of the God-Trodden Mount Sinai’, this monastery is dedicated to Catherine of Alexandria and is located at the mouth of a gorge near the base of Mount Sinai.

This monastery was built between 548 and 565 and is one of the oldest functioning Christian monasteries in the world. It was built by order of Emperor Justinian on the site where Moses is said to have seen the burning bush; a sacred site to Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.

Saint Catherine’s Monastery also contains the world’s oldest continually operating library which is home to a number of unique books. It also holds the second largest collection of early codices and manuscripts (the Vatican Library has the largest number). The Codex Sinaiticus, which dates back to the 4 th Century and is one of the oldest preserved manuscripts of the Bible was found here. Also discovered at the Monastery was the Syriac Sinaiticus, which pre-dates the Codex Sinaiticus and was crucial in understanding the history of the New Testament. The Syriac Sinaiticus can still be found at the monastery today.

Unsurprisingly, Saint Catherine’s Monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Monastery of Saint Anthony

The Monastery of Saint Anthony is located in the eastern Sahara Desert, in the Red Sea Mountains near modern-day Hurghada. It was built by an oasis where Saint Anthony the Great, one of the ‘Desert Fathers’, spent his time after choosing to travel into the desert to escape those seeking his advice as he believed that it distracted him from his own worship.

The Monastery was built in 356, a few years after Saint Anthony’s death. It is one of the oldest monasteries in the world and the same rituals have been practiced here, unchanged, for more than sixteen centuries.

While this monastery was attacked and faced a lot of damage over the years, it still has plenty to see. Today, the monastery acts like a small town with several churches, gardens, and even a working bakery. There are plenty of remarkable paintings, some of which are believed to date back to the 7 th and 8 th centuries, as well as ancient woodworks, and more than 1700 documents in the library.

Monastery of Saint Anthony

Monastery of Saint Paul

Located in Egypt’s Eastern Desert, the Monastery of Saint Paul dates back to the 5 th century. Saint Paul is believed to have been the mentor of Saint Anthony. Saint Paul was orphaned by the age of sixteen and left his inheritance behind to dedicate his life to Egypt. He found refuge in the Eastern Desert where he lived to be 113. It is said that Saint Anthony sought out Saint Paul after hearing that there was a man in the desert who was holier than he. The two became friends until Paul’s death. According to the stories, Anthony saw Paul’s spirit carried away by the angels and watched as two lions then dug a grave and buried his body.

The Monastery of Saint Paul also known as Deir Anba Bula, is built like a fortress. This was common due to Christian monasteries and churches being raided and pillaged by Bedouin and Berber groups. Despite its remote location, the Monastery of Saint Paul still fell under attack several times over the centuries.

Should you choose to visit, there are three churches on the grounds which you can visit including that of Saint Paul the Anchorite which is dug into the cave where Saint Paul spent so many years. There are also many manuscripts owned by the monastery that you can view as well.

Wadi el-Natroun

Wadi el-Natroun is a valley located about 62 miles from Cairo . In ancient Egypt, it was important as it was full of the carbonated sodium needed for the mummification process. It was also important to the Romans, who found the area to also be a source of silica which they used for making glass. However, while this wadi was full of resources, it also had another use; a safe haven for Christians fleeing Roman persecution.

At one point, Wadi el-Natroun was full of monasteries. However, after the wear and tear of time, weather, and Bedouin raids, only four monasteries have survived and can be seen today. These are:

1) The Monastery of Anba Bishoy

2) The Monastery of Baramus

3) The Monastery of Abu Makar

4) The Monastery of El-Suryan

It is possible to visit all four of these monasteries as a day trip from Cairo. The Monastery of Abu Makar is especially impressive. It is home to more than 100 monks and has over 600 works who live on the grounds and work on the monastery’s farm.

Without a doubt, Egypt has a rich religious history and while the ancient Pharaonic religion and current Islam religion tend to be the focus, those who have an interest in Christianity in Egypt will not be disappointed by the incredible churches , monasteries, and Christian sites spread throughout the country.

If you are interested in adding any of these Christian monuments and monasteries to your visit, get in touch with our team. We’re happy to customize your Egypt private tour package to your interests.

Experience the Bible

We provide life-changing Bible Study Tours to Egypt, Jordan, and Israel that bring the land of the Bible to life.

Why Biblical Study Tours?

Research reveals that 58% of people would read their Bible more often but struggle to understand what they are reading. This leaves them confused, discouraged, and unmotivated to try. The Bible was first written in Hebrew and Greek to an audience who lived thousands of years ago. Context is everything when it comes to reading and understanding the Bible. The more context people know, the more their Bibles make sense!

Our context rich biblical study tours are designed to make the Bible easier to understand by providing experiences and insights through engaging the culture, geography, and history found in the Biblical text.

Out of Egypt, Into a Good Land

Experience God's redemptive story through big hikes and insights

All trip dates subject to change.

Create a Study Tour

Different Types of Tours

We offer a variety of tours from the physically strenuous to a relaxed cruise so that you can experience Egypt, Jordan, and Israel. Find what type of trip fits you below.

Do you have a specific date in mind?

The Fig Tree Difference

Under the Fig Tree experiences are not your typical tours where tourist sites and gift shops shape the itinerary. Ezekiel 40:4 shapes what we do and how we do it: "See with your eyes, hear with your ears, and set your heart on all that I show you for that's why I brought you here. Then go tell Israel..." Our study tours will provide you with both wonderful experiences and deep insights with as many sites and learning experiences that the day will allow.

Academic Excellence

We have spent years walking the land and developing relationships with friends in Israel, Jordan, and Egypt. We continue to study the culture, religion, and history of ancient times all to develop deep, relevant and impactful lessons intended to bring clarity to the Biblical narrative. Undergraduate and graduate level credit for certain tours are available through Oklahoma Wesleyan University.

We lead and teach in a way so that the Bible is easier to understand for everyone. We can't wait to share what has been prepared for you!

Servant Leadership

First century disciples would follow their Rabbi as he walked throughout the land teaching with both word and action. Learning from such a Rabbi was described as "sitting at his feet" and was most often done under a fig tree. Fig trees provided cool shade and succulent sweet fruit. Soon, sitting "under the fig tree" became an idiom for someone who sat in the shade of the Rabbi enjoying the sweet fruit of his instruction & wisdom.

Our leaders walk along with you as you grow in your faith. You will experience both refreshing shade and sweet fruit through the teachings as well as the teacher.

Experiential

Location plays a role in shaping life while at the same time gives a glimpse into why God places us where we live today. The Bible contains so many stories of God placing his people in places and situations they'd never choose and yet it is especially there and in those circumstances that he seeks to be known, trusted, and glorified. Many of those "out of the way" places are precisely where we go and, like our ancestors in the faith, we discover His love afresh.

Our tours are not just about going somewhere, it's about being somewhere! Learning and growing is a staple on our tours, but if you're an experiential learner – you'll love and excel on this journey!

George DeJong

Pastor, Historian, & Teacher

George is the Founder and Executive Director of Under the Fig Tree Ministries while continuing to serve as Teaching Pastor at Holland Heights Church in Holland, Michigan. In 1997, a great passion was ignited in George when he first went to Israel with friend and colleague Ray VanderLaan . George has been committed to an ongoing deep study of the Text in its Jewish context as well as its historical and cultural contexts. In turn, not only has George's life and ministry at Holland Heights Church been shaped, but his love for the Word has opened opportunities for studying at Jerusalem University College and serving as a long standing board member of That the World May Know Ministries! Shaped by the rabbinic method, George began leading tours to Israel through Under the Fig Tree Ministries in 2006.

Since then, tour opportunities have broadened to Egypt and Jordan. George's passion for the study and teaching of the Bible has helped others "see with their eyes and hear with their ears" (Ezekiel 40:4). To walk with and learn from George is to experience a rarity - the knowledge of a scholar combined with 35 years of pastoral experience. As our guides in the Middle East often say, "To know George is to love him." A hallmark of George's ministry is not only in enriching those on a study tour but also in developing longstanding relationships with friends in the lands of the Bible where relationships are developed over time and intensely treasured! When asked what is it to walk and learn with George one participant commented: "...it's to be with a wise, caring and learned shepherd, it's being with one of Jesus' trusted under-shepherds".

Eric Schrotenboer

Eric studied Bible, Music, and Communication at Hope College, Messianic Judaism at Denver Seminary, and received his Masters of Divinity from Western Theological Seminary.

Dave Lassanske

Historian & Teacher

Dave has helped to produce faith-based videos for over 15 years for Focus on the Family , Zondervan , and Ray Vander Laan that have brought him to Egypt and the Sinai, Israel, Jordan, Turkey, Greece and Rome. He has immersed himself in the study of ancient Egyptian religion with a focus on reading and understanding hieroglyphs. Pared with his pursuit of a masters in Biblical Exegesis, Dave's insightful observations and love for the land adds depth to our tours as he connects the threads of spiritual formation from ancient times to our modern day.

This morning we depart Cairo with stories of the "Land of Goshen" to the north and travel the southward route of the Exodus through the Wilderness of Shur. We learn of the terrain and the history of this region en-route as we stop at Marah (Springs of Moses), the Wilderness of Sin, and further to the south, the Oasis of Feiran. For those who are able, we climb a small hill to the ruins of an ancient chapel that overlooks the palm tree valley where Israel battled with the people of Amalek. One may have his picture taken with arms raised in remembrance of God's victory as Moses' arms were held high by Aaron and Hur. Arriving in the afternoon to the hotel at Mt. Sinai (Mt. Horeb). Those who desire and are physically capable will depart for a memorable walk up Mt. Moses. You may choose to ride a camel part way, stop at one of the stations to take in scenery along the climb to the summit (750 steps) for a sunset to remember. Once at the top, enjoy a time of reflection and praise before departing down the mountain.

Day 5: St. Catherine's, Red Sea, Aqaba

christian tours in egypt

A visit to St. Catherine's Monastery, claimed to be built around the area of Moses' Burning Bush, will be followed by a short ride to the Red Sea. A stop for lunch along the shore will provide a view of Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Israel to the north. Gazing across the Gulf of Aqaba, we can begin to imagine the miracle of the parting of the sea. We then travel north viewing the Red Sea en-route to the border crossing between Egypt and Israel. Transferring through Eilat in southern Israel, we arrive in Jordan Aqaba, Biblical Ezion Geber - the lovely seaport of King Solomon. Our lodging this evening will be in Aqaba or Petra.

Day 6: Petra

christian tours in egypt

This morning we visit the amazing mountain fortress of Petra, known to be inhabited by the Edomites - the descendants of Esau. Begin the tour with a walk through the "Siq," an immense crack in the Nubian sandstone, to the city of Petra carved out of the rose red rock. The Treasury, El Khazneh, is one of the most elegant remains of antiquity. Beyond El Khazneh we are surrounded on both sides by hundreds of Petra's carved and built structures. Departing Petra, we travel northward on the King's Highway where to the west we view the hills bordering the Dead Sea. This is the area of the hilltop palace/fortress of Machaerus, where John the Baptist was beheaded. We overnight in Amman for this evening.

Day 7: Mt Nebo, Madaba, Tel Aviv

christian tours in egypt

Our morning tour begins in the town of Madaba, the biblical Medeba, 30 kilometers south of Amman. Madaba is best known for its Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics and at the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George we view the earliest surviving mosaic map of the Holy land. Mt. Nebo, believed to be the site of the tomb of Moses, commands a spectacular view across the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. Study the panorama as we read the scripture of God showing Moses the "Promised Land" before He brought him home to heaven. As we travel west toward the Allenby Bridge, we view to the north the Plains of Moab, the area where the tribes of Israel camped before crossing the Jordan and picture Bethany Beyond the Jordan, the place where Jesus was baptized. Crossing back into Israel, we drive to Tel Aviv area with the remainder of the afternoon free. You may wish to take a devotional time with the sunset over the “Great Sea,” a time of prayer and thanks for the special blessings ahead, a prayer for the people of this land, and then enjoy a good night’s rest.

Day 8: Caesarea, Megiddo, & Nazareth

christian tours in egypt

After breakfast, we travel by private motor coach along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea to Caesarea, where Gentiles first heard the Good News from Peter and were baptized. We’ll see the Roman Amphitheatre, hippodrome, a film on history and the remains of this famous port city, an aqueduct, and then journey through the Mt. Carmel range, where Elijah challenged King Ahab and the prophets of Baal. Next we travel through the Jezreel Valley to Megiddo, the Armageddon battlefield, where archaeologists have unearthed 20 levels of civilization. We drive through the area of Cana and Nazareth, the boyhood home of Jesus, where we visit the Nazareth Village, a wonderful recreation of Biblical times with costumed guides. We will have dinner and overnight lodging for the next three nights along the Sea of Galilee.

Day 9: Dan, Caesarea Philippi, Jesus Boat, Sea of Galilee Boat Ride, Magdala

christian tours in egypt

Following breakfast, our morning travels take us to two valuable northern sites. Dan is where the children of Israel fell to the depths of alternative sacrifice and Caesarea Philippi, the site of Peter’s confession and pagan worship. We pass the possible site of the multiplication of loaves and fishes in Bethsaida and the Mount of the Beatitudes. Returning to Galilee for a St. Peter’s fish lunch (other selections available), we then visit the ancient fisherman boat followed by a relaxing cruise on the Sea of Galilee. A brief scripture reading and devotional on board brings to life the experiences of Jesus and the fishermen disciples. We conclude our day with a visit to Magdala, hometown of Mary Magdalene. The recent excavation of the first century synagogue and well-preserved village makes Magdala one of the most interesting Biblical sites in Israel.

Day 10: Capernaum, Corazin, Mt. Arbel, Jordan River Baptism Site

christian tours in egypt

Today we visit the Biblical towns of Capernaum and Corazin. Capernaum is located along the Sea of Galilee and was the hometown of Peter. It is likely where Jesus and the disciples lived during much of His ministry while in Galilee. Next, we visit Corazin which offers another example of a Jewish synagogue and a replica of the “Seat of Moses” which was carved out of the local basalt block and from which the scribes and Pharisees would have read the Torah. We enjoy a bird’s eye view of the Galilee region atop Mt. Arbel. Mt. Arbel could likely be the location that Jesus would get away from the crowds to take time in prayer with His heavenly Father. Here our guide will point out the various towns listed in scripture during the time of Jesus. We conclude our day with an opportunity to be baptized at the Jordan River Baptismal Site.

Day 11: Beit Shean, Bethany Beyond Jordan, Abraham's Tent, Mt. of Olives & Garden of Gethsemane

christian tours in egypt

We travel southward this morning to Beit-Shean/Scythopolis, the most magnificent archeological site in Israel, located at the strategic juncture of the Jezreel and Jordan valleys. Like Jericho, it has been almost continuously occupied throughout history. After defeating Saul and his sons on Mt. Gilboa, the Philistines hanged their bodies on the walls of Beit-Shean. During the time of Jesus, Scythopolis was one of the chief cities of the Decapolis - a league of ten cities sharing Greek culture and government. Following the fertile Jordan Valley southward, your guide will point out the agricultural restoration of the “Land of Milk and Honey” and Israel’s intricate irrigation development. We pass ancient Jericho and view from a distance this city famed as the oldest in the world. To the east of Jericho along the Jordan River Valley (Queser El Yehud) is the Israeli side of Bethany Beyond the Jordan. In this area Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist; Elijah and Elisha crossed the Jordan; and the children of Israel, led by Joshua, entered the Promised Land. This afternoon we will take part in the Genesis Land/Dinner in Abraham's Tent, where we enjoy a trip back in time to relive life in the time of the Patriarchs, complete with costume, dramatic presentation, camel ride and authentic food. Arriving in Jerusalem we’ll enjoy a beautiful view of the Old City atop the Mt. of Olives and then the Garden of Gethsemane. How many have wished to be whisked back in time to get a glimpse of our Lord or hear His voice if only for a moment? To walk between the ancient olive trees, read the scriptures of Jesus' prayer and take time for personal reflection is important here. We will have dinner and overnight lodging for the next four nights in Jerusalem.

Day 12: Masada, Ein Gedi, Dead Sea Scrolls, Dead Sea Swim

christian tours in egypt

Our day begins with a cable car ride to the mountain top fortress of Masada. Here our guide will treat us to the history of the famous zealot stand. Afterwards we proceed to Ein Gedi, "Spring of the Goat," an oasis on the western shore of the Dead Sea. Because of its warm climate and abundant supply of water, the site developed a reputation for its fragrant plants and date palm groves. This is where King David hid from Saul and where God defeated the enemies of the Israelites by praise and worship led by King Jehoshaphat. Next, we visit the Qumran Caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. This afternoon we have an opportunity to enjoy a relaxing float in the Dead Sea.

Day 13: Jesus’ Steps, Western Walls, Southern Steps, Way of Suffering, Garden Tomb

christian tours in egypt

Today we walk where Jesus walked, beginning the day with a visit to the Wailing Wall and then the fascinating Rabbinical Tunnels leading us through the Second Temple era. The tunnel and exhibit give a clear understanding of the amazing construction of the Temple Mount, giant stones, water supply and Roman street where our Lord was led to judgment. Before exiting the tunnel, we see the immense cornerstone rejected by the builders. Next, we visit the Southern Wall Excavations. This southern side of The Temple was the main entrance for the common folk, whereas the Priests and Levites had their own entrance from the higher eastern side. Parts of the giant stairs, which led to the Temple Mount from the courtyard have been unearthed along with the purification pools. From here Jesus entered the Temple Mount and drove out the vendors and money exchangers who were exploiting the people. It is also likely that this is the place where Peter stood and preached and where thousands were saved and baptized on the Day of Pentecost. This afternoon we move on to the Judgment Hall of Pilate, hear of those who conspired against Him and are reminded of His brutal beating and humiliation. From here we will also be able to see the Pool of Bethesda, Stephen's Gate, and St. Anne’s Church. While walking along the Via Dolorosa, we are reminded of His way of suffering along with a visit to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Our guide will explain the differing opinions on the route where Christ was led. (The actual place of crucifixion and burial is a very interesting study!) The climax of the day is the area of Golgotha (place of the skull) and the Garden Tomb, where we celebrate the resurrection with communion and a time of praise.

Day 14: Home

A very early morning departure for the Tel Aviv Airport for our flight homeward will allow for arrival home by early afternoon.

Important Note: Although the itinerary above obviously emphasizes the spiritual aspect of this marvelous country, our guides are also experts in and passionate about the miracle of the return of the Jews and the restoration of the state of Israel. This fact, along with many modern day topics (military, politics, education, and other cultural aspects), will be woven into the commentary in order to give you well rounded information.

*The tour itinerary is subject to change or be slightly modified in order to best meet the interests of the group.
