Northern Lights

Over 300 nights a year, churchill area, aurora borealis.

Image

Churchill is one of the BEST spots on the planet to see the Northern Lights (Aurora borealis) Churchill lies directly beneath the Auroral Oval in the Northern Hemisphere. With auroral activity occurring on over 300 nights a year, Churchill offers unique access to this mysterious and compelling phenomena.

churchill northern lights tour

The view from directly beneath the Aurora shows dazzling bands of light with huge depth, and often with colour! Be assured that no experience can match the real light show in the arctic sky.

The   POES Auroral Activity   website provides current visual imaging of the auroral oval.

What causes the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights, or the Aurora borealis as some call it, is nature's own gigantic light-show. It is a phenomenon that can be seen in both the northern and southern hemispheres (the Aurora australis, or Southern Lights appear in the southern hemisphere) if conditions are right.

There are three things needed for an Aurora light show:

  • A clear night

A CLEAR NIGHT is weather dependant. Even with out clear skies there can still be Auroral activity, but we won't be able to see it from Earth.

There are all sorts of GASES in the atmosphere. It is the different gases which cause the Aurora to change colour

SOLAR WIND comes from the sun. The sun has a number of holes in its corona (outer layer). High energy particles stream out of these holes and are thrown out into our solar system. When solar wind particles collide with the gases in the atmosphere, the energy is transferred into light. When billions of these collisions happen at the same time, together they produce the Northern Lights.

Why does the Aurora only occur in high latitudes?

We can only have Auroral activity in high latitudes (far north or far south) because of the magnetic fields near the poles. Most people are familiar with magnetic north - the strong force that pulls your compass needle but some people don't realize that there is also a magnetic field around the south pole. The solar wind particles needed for an Aurora event are pulled into the earth's atmosphere by these magnetic fields.

Does the Aurora make a sound?

This topic has long been a source of debate but it seems they do! Now, many people report hearing a 'swish' as the lights move and flicker in the sky. Others claim to hear a electrical, crackling sound. Being the helpful CNSC research people we are...here are a couple of the theories relating to Auroral sound.

SWISHING - The fact that these sounds seem to accompany movement in the Northern Lights presents a minor difficulty. With the Aurora occuring about 80-300km above ground, there should be a delay between movement and sound. Similar to that of thunder and lightning. In addition, the air is thin up there, too thin to effectively carry sound over great distances. This suggest that Auroral sounds must be created near the observer, possibly even inside their head! No, not imaginary, but a 'leakage of the electrical impulses from the nerves in the eye (carrying images of the aurora to the brain) into the part of the brain the processes sound'. Northern Lights are often viewed in a very quiet, natural environment.

Without sound signals to process, the brain notices these tiny electrical leakages and, as a result, the noise changes along with the Aurora! Try testing this explanation by covering your eyes when this sound occurs.

CRACKLING - Ligtning storms, aurora and the Earth's magnetosphere all produce electromagnetic signal in the extremely-low-frequency to very-low-frequency radio spectrum. Unfortunately for the casual observer, these radio waves cannot be listened to without an audio-frequency ELF-VLF radio receiver.

Radio emissions are being studied both via ground-based receiving systems as well as orbiting spacecraft receivers. To listen to these unique sounds and find out more about radio wave research, check out   Stephen P. McGreevey's ELF-VLF recordings   and the   auroral chorus homepage .

When is the best time to see the Northern Lights in Churchill?

Sunspot activity occurs in an 11 year cycle and this, in turn causes variation in the northern lights as a result of changes in solar wind. Generally, during the summer (May, June, July) when nighttime skies remain relatively bright, the aurora is not readily visible. Early fall (August, September) and late winter/early spring (late January through April) present better viewing opportunities.

The following link represents the 'Clear Sky Clock' for the Churchill area. It provides the current two-day forecast for sky watchers. Blue blocks are clear sky, white ones represent cloud cover.

Click on the image below for detailed information...

Global aurora predictions can be found through the University of Alaska -  Fairbanks Geophysical Institute  website. These predictions are 'based on interpretations of satellite observations of active structures on the sun and of the solar wind between the sun and the earth'.

How can I find out more about the Aurora?

Find out what the Auroral Oval is up to right now!   OVATION   is a real-time online model defining the position and intensity of auroral activity. This project is available thanks to data from the DMSP satellites, from NASA's Polar UVI imager, and from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks Meridian Scanning Photometer.

Learn how to predit the Aurora with the Canadian Space Agency's   Tips on Viewing Aurora   site. Be sure to check out their   space weather   forecast as well.

Research into space physics and the aurora borealis is currently being conducted by the Auroral Particles and Imagery Group at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL). Check out some of the findings and questions raised by their   Magnetospheric and Ionospheric Physics Research Projects   (aurora stuff...).

David P. Stern and Mauricio Peredo have an created an excellent online resource exploring the Earth's magnetoshpere and related phenomena. Start with their   Close Up of the Aurora   page and explore from there!

Here is an excellent educational resource for teachers and students.   P.O.E.T.R.Y.   provides the latest information about auroral science, and the study of Earth's magnetic field. **EDUCATORS** Find more innovative programs, such as P.O.E.T.R.Y., on the   CNSC Education Page !

"A lot of these tour companies—adventure tour companies—are a lot of 'fluff'. They do a lot of talk and...personally, all our trips have been good, but they don't meet up with the expectations and the promises you're going to get...and I can say that this company—it has been beyond my expectations. They have fulfilled it, completely."

"We've been fortunate. We've travelled with a lot of different tour companies including Nat Geo—we went with them of several very expensive trips...very good trips...outstanding trips with one of them being Antartica, and we've been with Rhodes Scholar, we've been with Odyssey and several others, but what I want to say is that I think out of all the tours we've been on, this is probably the best run tour we've been on, and I think that speaks to the fact that the staff Is s good as the staff is." Our experience at Lazy Bear Lodge from the moment we were met to board our plane to Churchill was great , Arriving at the airport in Churchill and being met by staff from Lazy Bear went so smoothly . Our overall experience was beyond expectations from the moment we checked in . We stayed on an all inclusive plan, including tours every day for four days and three meals included. The food was excellent , as good as any fine dining menu , great wonderful presentations , the serving staff are so personable . The rooms are small but cozy, with white linens on the bed which give it a more updated look . But it isn’t about the room as you will discover , as we did. The Tour guides work here and are not only friendly but so knowledgeable…On tour we saw great northern lights , beluga whales on a zodiac and polar bears by helicopter and a dog mushing tour. These were the highlights for us. Highly recommend. You won’t be disappointed..

This was an unbelievable trip. Deacon and Eric were very knowledgeable - the staff at the Lodge was accommodating and fantastic. We saw lots of bear activity including mums with cubs, and a couple of highly interactive and engaging bears. Total count was high - perhaps 30 over two days? I travelled with my 82 year old mother and staff were very solicitous.

Did I mention the food? Really good - including local specialties such as Elk (amazing!). Overall highly recommended and I am looking at coming back for Belugas and Bears in the summer! The Dog Sledding was excellent as well.

I loved my entire experience in Churchill and a big part of that was staying at Lazy Bear Lodge. All the staff were lovely and a big thank you to Deacon and his family (who own lodge) who were excellent hosts. Deacon was my group’s guide and we had a great time out on the bay with the Belugas and out on the Arctic Crawler™ looking for polar bears (we spotted a mum and her baby).

I think the highlight for me was the coziness of the interior wood decor and the food. The meals were hearty and local. I tried arctic char, elk, and other local delicacies while there and the portions were generous and featured good variety of vegetables. My favourite was the polar bear shaped scones served at breakfast.

Welcome to Churchill, Canada

Known as the polar bear capital of the world, Churchill is also known as a beluga whale watching hotspot and one of the best places to see the northern lights.

This remote Canadian town on the shores of Hudson Bay is 1,000 km north of Winnipeg, Manitoba's capital city. There are no roads that lead to Churchill, you can only get here by train or plane. In addition to seeing polar bears, beluga whales and northern lights, Churchill has an impressive history and culture. Tour a fur trade fort, go on a dogsled adventure and admire the works of local artists and artisans.

The Churchill Experience

The town of Churchill (population 1,000) is a northern Manitoba community accessible only by air and rail. A true bucket-list vacation destination, this rugged outpost on the edge of the Hudson Bay offers experiences you won't find anywhere else in the world.

Polar bears and beluga whales are just two of the main attractions that bring hundreds of international visitors to Churchill every year. The town is also famous for its nightlife, as one of the world's premiere viewing destinations for the aurora borealis (northern lights) that dance in the sky some 300 nights each year.

From the shipwreck of the Ithaca, to the enormous Sea Walls murals, to helicopter tours over the remote northern wilderness, there's no end to the surprises you'll find on the edge of the Arctic.

Aurora Borealis in the Wild

There are few phenomena more universally fascinating than the aurora borealis and our lodges, bordering the Arctic circle, are ideally situated for witnessing this spectacle.

The Greek word “aurora” derives itself from Greek mythology, meaning “goddess of the dawn” and “boreas” means “wind” (Zone). What can be explained by science is difficult to comprehend, when you lay beneath a stream of colours, licking, twisting and swirling their way across the sky. The aurora borealis keep you in a state of awe as they swell and surges with shades of green, red and purple, often so bright they light up the snow.

Although seemingly celestial, sunspots explain the science behind the phenomenon of the northern lights. When bursts of gasses release from the sun, the energy is carried across space on the solar wind. As the ions glaze over the atmosphere at our magnetic poles, they interact with the oxygen and nitrogen gases in the air, causing the northern lights to form.

The different gases and altitudes create an array of colours across the sky. Oxygen creates red and green, which you see most commonly in the aurora borealis with the naked eye, while nitrogen allows for the pinks and purples to show.

Our location beneath the auroral oval in the pristine heart of northern Canada, far from light pollution, means we’re ideally located for those who love to watch the lights dance across the sky.

With approximately 300 nights a year of aurora activity, it’s possible, given the right conditions, to see the northern lights while on any of our safaris.

Aurora over Seal River Heritage Lodge, Robert Postma photo.

Best time to see Northern Lights

While the winter months are thought of as the traditional time to view the northern lights, they can also be spectacular on a clear summer or fall night. Plus, it’s a lot more fun working with cameras in the warmer months at 10° C instead of -40° C!

Your best chances of seeing the northern lights on one of our safaris will occur from September to November.

Whichever safari you decide on, you can rest assured that our staff will monitor the skies at night and wake you up when the lights make an appearance, so you won’t miss out on the spectacle of a lifetime.

COVID-19 Travel UpDATE – KEEPING YOU INFORMED

Our Tour Seasons

Life in the SubArctic undergoes great change throughout the year. Churchill has three distinct seasons that represent the optimal time to view the Aurora Borealis, Beluga Whales and Polar Bears. From February to April, cold conditions often bring clear skies with long nights providing some of the best opportunities to view the Northern Lights. As the SubArctic gradually begins to thaw during Spring, a wide range of migratory birds return to the area with Beluga Whales being not far behind. The first Polar Bears can usually be spotted in early July as they come off the ice and the Tundra is in bloom. This represents the pinnacle of life returning to the SubArctic.  The odds of viewing Aurora again increase in August and September with days getting shorter. This time of year provides the best opportunity to view Bears, Belugas and Borealis together. As temperatures begin to cool again in the Fall, Beluga Whales migrate North from the Churchill River for the winter and Polar Bear become more active in anticipation of ice formation. Please refer to the chart below to view when our tours operate.

Hike out in the middle of Polar Bear Country to the shipwreck of the MV Ithaka and imagine what it was like getting caught in a September gale and running aground the rocky coastline of the Hudson Bay.

Northern lights cruises: A guide to chasing the aurora borealis at sea

Fran Golden

Witnessing the elusive northern lights flickering across the sky might cause you to gasp because it's actually that cool. The colorful ribbons of green look like something from outer space — and they are. Auroras appear when charged particles collide with Earth's atmosphere.

Seeing the ethereal display, also known as the aurora borealis, is a bucket-list experience for many travelers. Cruise ships can take you to destinations where your chances of catching Mother Nature's special light show are improved.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Remember that seeing this phenomenon doesn't involve a cruise director flipping on a switch. Witnessing the northern lights requires clear and dark skies, late-night viewing hours, enough solar activity for the colors to appear and a big dose of luck. Keep that in mind before you invest all your cruise vacation hopes in this one experience.

Where can I see the northern lights on a cruise?

churchill northern lights tour

The lights are best viewed in the Northern Hemisphere and especially in locations on the so-called auroral oval, a ring zone over the polar regions. In cruising terms, that means prime viewing is in northern Alaska (which is easily accessible on cruisetours), Norway, Iceland, Arctic Canada and parts of Greenland.

Just off the auroral ring is the rest of Alaska. If you are on a cruise in the Inside Passage before April 21 or after Aug. 21 and are willing to be awake in the middle of the night (the lights tend to appear in Alaska after midnight), there's a chance you'll see the aurora borealis.

Cruise lines operating in Alaska — including Holland America , Princess Cruises and UnCruise Adventures — have northern lights sign-up sheets so you don't have to stay up all night, every night, hoping to see the display. Put your name on the list, and you'll receive a wake-up call or knock on your cabin door if there's aurora action. Plan to put on your clothes or bathrobe quickly, as the lights might only appear for a few minutes. (They could also last considerably longer.)

Related: Peak solar activity is forecast for 2024: Here are the best places around the world to see the northern lights

If you're interested in where to see the northern lights outside Alaska, the Arctic city of Alta, Norway, calls itself "The City of Northern Lights."

Alta's credentials include the world's first permanent observatory for viewing the aurora borealis; it was built there in 1899. A whole industry has sprung up around the lights, including such extravagant shore excursions as an overnight in a tent with viewing windows at a Sami dog-sledding camp. Alta is also home to the Northern Lights Cathedral, an architectural landmark.

Tromso is another Norwegian destination known as a hub for aurora borealis viewing. In late January, there's a northern lights arts festival featuring top artists in various musical genres.

Cunard Line and Hurtigruten are among the lines that visit northern Norway in the fall. However, the peak viewing season is from November to March (see below). Viking also visits but in the winter.

Iceland, Greenland and Arctic Canada appear on many expedition ships' itineraries during northern lights season, mostly early in the season in August and September. Lines with ships there include Quark Expeditions, Aurora Expeditions and Lindblad Expeditions.

When can I see the northern lights on a cruise?

churchill northern lights tour

Because of the late-setting and early rising midnight sun, it's way too light during the summer to see the northern lights in the destinations mentioned, but solar activity does take place year-round.

If you have a goal of seeing the aurora borealis in any of the destinations discussed here, you're best off booking as far into the fall as you can find a cruise. Norway is the only prime northern lights destination with winter cruises.

The lights like to appear in the wee hours — particularly between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. — in Alaska. An advantage in Norway is that it's dark enough to see them for a longer period during fall and winter.

Do cruisetours in Alaska improve my chances of seeing the lights?

Cruisetours in Alaska can improve your odds of seeing the aurora because they get you to Fairbanks and other inland destinations in Alaska that tend to have more cloud-free skies than in the Inside Passage, where cruise ships sail.

While you might see the lights from Denali National Park and Preserve during the viewing season, venturing to Fairbanks and points farther north will increase your odds.

Fairbanks tourism folks like to brag that if you visit for at least three nights between Aug. 21 and April 21, your chances of seeing the aurora borealis are more than 90%. (That assumes you are out actively looking during the late evening hours.)

Since your cruisetour might not visit for three nights, consider booking extra hotel nights before or after your cruise. Other things to do in this laid-back city (human population: about 100,000; moose population: 16,000) include riverboat tours, gold panning and yoga with reindeer.

You can also see the lights in Canada's Yukon Territory, including in the gold rush town of Dawson City, which is visited on some Holland America cruisetours.

Related: What's the best way to view the northern lights? We tried to see them by air, land and sea

Should I go on a cruise just to see the northern lights?

Yes, but remember that the phenomenon is dependent on the weather (clear skies required) and hard to predict, despite scientists' best efforts.

Viking has wintertime cruises to Norway from London specifically designed to track the lights in the Norwegian Sea during the peak viewing season — throughout the cruise but especially above the Arctic Circle in Tromso and Alta (where the sailings stop overnight). It's dark in these locales in winter, increasing your chances.

Hurtigruten is so invested in its northern lights experiences that it has hired famed northern lights astronomer Tom Kerss as its "chief aurora chaser." He will serve as an onboard expert, offering talks and workshops for passengers.

The line is so sure you will see the lights on the October-through-March sailings of its year-round 11- and 12-day Norwegian Coastal Express itineraries that the company has a guarantee called the Northern Lights Promise. If the deck's officers don't announce to all on board that the northern lights are happening, you can get a six- or seven-day Norwegian Coastal cruise for free.

This new immersive Voyage to the Stars experience is part of the cruise line’s award-winning North to Alaska with Princess program set to debut for the upcoming 2024 cruise and cruisetour season that strengthens the overall guest connection in the Great Land. This year Princess guests will step inside a planetarium in the Princess Theater for a front row seat to the “Northern Lights” presentation showcasing the beauty and wonder of this phenomenon featuring live imagery, designed to engage adults and kids alike.

“Each season in Alaska we strive to deliver enriching experiences for our guests to feel immersed in the beauty and local culture of this spectacular destination,” said Terry Thornton, chief commercial officer of Princess Cruises. “After receiving our highest guest satisfaction ranking ever last season, we knew we wanted to design elevated programming to further connect our guests to all of the wonders of the 49th state for our 55th anniversary season.”
