Ash and Trip's Third Battle

cilan vs trip

As the episode begins, Cilan is making a stew for Ash and Iris while saying that it will be a great stew. While he is cooking, the Pokmon are enjoying the smell of the food. Ash and Iris swing back and forth on vines, as they say to Cilan that it's fun and that he should try it too. As they are swinging, a leaf falls into the pot and Cilan becomes upset. He knocks the pot over and says that it is shocking time. Everyone is shocked to see the food fall over, as Iris and Ash apologize to Cilan for that happening. Cilan looks down with a sad face, as everyone looks nervous about what he's going to say. Cilan says that it now means that they will have no lunch. Iris grabs three apples, and hands them to Ash and Cilan. Cilan says that he is going to remake the food, and says that if they want to play then they will need to do it farther away from the food.

As they walk away, Ash says that they did something bad to Cilan. Iris says that they got scolded because he is a child. She says that it is his fault since it was his idea to swing in the vines. Ash says that he just wanted to show that she wasn't the only one that can climb trees and crossing branches. Iris says that they should race to see who is better, as she suggests that they race to an Oran Berry tree out in the distance. She says that the one who returns first wins, as Ash is unable to see the tree. She explains that it is to the right of the tallest tree, as Ash is finally able to see it. Ash comments that Iris can see very far, as she says that it is very common in the Dragon Village. They race to the tree, as Iris says that she is indeed better while she is in the lead. Ash says that the race has only just begun. Ash misses a vine, and slides down a hill.

Meanwhile Trip is trying to capture a Palpitoad, as Vanillite uses Ice Beam to freeze Palpitoad in place. Trip throws a Pok Ball to try and catch Palpitoad, but Ash slides into the Palpitoad to set it free. Palpitoad becomes dizzy, as it runs away to the lake. Ash scans Palpitoad with his Pokdex. Ash sees Trip and Vanillite, as he scans Vanillite with his Pokdex. Trip comments that people normally don't try to get captured in Pok Balls. Ash apologizes as he asks if he got in the way of a Pokmon capture. Iris arrives and shivers, as she sees the Vanillite. Iris wonders why there is an Ice Type Pokmon where they are at, as she tells Trip to put the Pokmon away. Trip calls Iris a weird girl, and returns Vanillite to its Pokdex. Trip tells Ash to never get in his way again, and walks away.

Iris explains that since Dragon Type Pokmon are weak against Ice Types, she cannot stand the cold. Ash asks if the people at the Dragon Village who like Dragon Types are the same way. Iris says that the Old Matriarch can't stand the cold either. Trip notices that Iris is from the Dragon Village, since she has an Axew with her. Trip says that he has never met someone from the Dragon Village before, as he begins to take pictures of Iris and Axew. Iris asks Trip why he's taking pictures of her, as he says that he is recording his journey. Iris says that he shouldn't do it without permission. Trip says to Iris that her logic for being fearful of Ice Types is strange, since Dragon types are also weak against other Dragon Type Pokmon. He asks if she doesn't mind having an Axew by her side, as Iris asks if he has a problem with it. Ash says that Iris is training to become a Dragon Master, as Iris tells him not to mention it. Trip says that if she wants to become a Dragon Master, then she shouldn't be afraid of Ice Type Pokmon, and that it is rude to Ice Types. With a disgusted look on her face, Iris apologizes.

Meanwhile, Cilan is remaking the stew that he had prepared before, and is enjoying the smell with Pansage. Once the meal is finished, Cilan calls out to Iris and Ash to say that the food is ready. With no response, Cilan wonders where they went off to. Cilan decides to make another course, and with a Pecha Berry in it. Trip asks Iris to battle him, as Ash says that he should battle him instead. Trip says that he has never battled a Dragon Type before, and thinks that Iris has more than one Dragon Type Pokmon. He says that since she is training to become a Dragon Master, battling Trip would not hurt. Iris thinks about her other two Pokmon Emolga and Excadrill, while a thought bubble shows them. She says that they are not in a good condition today to battle. Trip says that it sounds boring, as Ash again asks Trip to battle him and says that he won't lose this time. Trip says that battling him won't level up his Pokmon, as Ash becomes upset with the comment. Trip says that he wasted his time, and decides to look for Palpitoad again as he starts to walk away.

Iris says that it looks like he is afraid of losing to Ash and that he has messy logic. She says that he is very childish for rejecting the battle offer. Trip says that he will have to demonstrate his point for Ash to be able to understand it. Ash tells Trip that he has three badges so far, as Trip says that he has four of them. Ash says that his Pokmon have become stronger since the last time that they battled, as Trip suggests to make it a 3-on-3 battle and that the first person with two victories wins. Ash says that he would be fine with a full battle, but Trip says that it would waste his time. Ash says that it will shock him with how much stronger he has become. Trip brings out Servine, while Ash brings out Snivy. Iris comments that Ash is just using brute force again. Meanwhile, Cilan has finished the food that has a Pecha Berry in it, as Pansage and Dwebble tell Cilan that they could not find Ash and Iris. Cilan decides that he will make a full course meal, and that he will make a lot of different things to surprise Ash and Iris.

Trip says that Ash never changes, and that he didn't evolve his Snivy. He says that Ash must be overconfident right now after defeating his Servine once before. He asks Ash how often he is going to ignore the basics. Ash says that they are his basics, as Trip asks if that is how things are in the hick town he lives in. Trip says that he has the nerve to say that he is trying to become a Pokmon Master and that winning the Pokmon League is a far away dream. Ash says that the bigger the dream, the more worthy it is to follow it. Trip says that if he keeps talking big, he'll be embarrassed when he loses. Iris and Axew are very bored with hearing Trip and Ash argue back and forth. Ash says that the same goes for Trip if he loses. Iris says that they should start the battle already.

Servine uses Leaf Tornado and Snivy uses Leaf Storm, as both attacks collide to create a very strong wind. Iris says that both attacks are even. Servine uses Cut, while Snivy dodges the attack. Snivy uses Attract, while Servine uses Leaf Tornado to block the attack. Trip says that his Servine has leveled up very well, and with that added experience can block supportive moves as well. Ash says that Snivy won't lose, and that preventing Attract won't be enough. Servine uses Cut and Snivy uses Leaf Blade, as Servine's Cut hits Snivy to knock her out. Trip says that the same result of a Snivy win won't occur twice. He says that it shows how much power they have gained, and how little Ash has gained. Iris thinks that Trip has a point about him being stronger. Ash says that he'll win the next battle. Trip says that he now knows that Ash's Pokmon haven't leveled up much, and that his own Pokmon's level will go down because of that.

Trip says that he has become much stronger, but at the rate he is going he won't be able to face the champion. Trip asks Ash if he knew about the champion, as Ash is excited that there is a champion in Unova as well. Iris says to Ash that of course there is a champion of this region, and asks if he knows Alder. Iris says that Alder is the Champion Master of the Unova Region, and everyone wants to battle him. Ash asks Iris if she has met Alder before, and she says no. Trip says that he has met Alder before, but says that Ash should find out what he is like on his own. Trip says that they should continue the battle, as he says that Alder would say that they should defeat their opponent with all they've got. He says that he'll never forget the promise Alder made when he was younger.

A flashback is shown where Trip is watching a battle at a festival between Alder with Bouffalant and a challenger with Herdier. Bouffalant uses Head Charge to knock out Herdier. Trip felt great about watching someone he admired when he watched him on TV. As a kid he was nervous around Alder's Bouffalant while petting it. Alder hands Trip some Pokmon food to give to Bouffalant. As he is feeding Bouffalant, Alder asks him what his dream is. Trip says that he wants to become a champion, and that he'll win against him to do so. Alder says that Trip says promising things, as he tells him to have more and more battles to become stronger and stronger. Trip is excited to become a Pokmon Trainer, as Alder says that he will defend his title as champion until the day Trip challenges him. Trip says that winning the Unova League is just the passing point to go to the champions league. He says that he will get stronger in order to fulfill his dream. Trip brings out Timburr, as Ash scans him with his Pokdex. Ash says that he will definitely battle Alder some day.

As brings out Oshawott to battle, as Timburr shows its log to Oshawott. Oshawott is afraid, as he tries to get Pikachu to battle for him instead. Ash gives Oshawott some encouragement, and Oshawott jumps in to battle. Oshawott uses Aqua Jet, as Timburr gets its Strength ready. Oshawott's attack misses, as he hits the ground hard. Iris is disgusted that Aqua Jet did not work again. Trip wonders if Ash is even fighting seriously. Oshawott uses Aqua Jet again, as the attack goes in circles and completely misses Timburr. Trip wonders if Ash is really fighting seriously. Trip notices something while Oshawott is using the attack and takes a picture, as Oshawott then hits the ground hard. Ash asks Trip why he is taking pictures in the middle of the battle. Iris asks if he is recording his journey in the middle of it too. Trip tells them to see for themselves, and shows them pictures of Oshawott with his eyes closed. Trip says that Oshawott has a remarkable talent, for being a Water Type Pokmon that can't open its eyes underwater, as Oshawott is proud of himself. Iris tells Oshawott that Trip is not praising him for that. Trip asks Ash if he noticed it before, as Ash says no. Ash tells Oshawott to not worry about it, and that he worked very hard to learn Aqua Jet. Ash says that if Oshawott practices opening his eyes underwater, then he'll never miss a target again.

Oshawott uses Razor Shell and Timburr throws its log up into the air, as it uses Low Sweep to trip Oshawott. Oshawott uses Water Gun, while Timburr uses Strength to block away the attack. Timburr jumps onto its log and uses DynamicPunch, while Oshawott uses Razor Shell as both attacks hit each other. Oshawott's Razor Shell sends Timburr into his log, and is knocked out. Iris says that Ash now has one loss and one victory. Ash tells Oshawott to keep up his good spirit, and that he'll master Aqua Jet eventually. Ash brings out Tepig and Trip brings out Vanillite, as Vanillite breaths some frosty air. Iris shakes in fear after seeing the Vanillite come out. She asks why Vanillite was chosen, with Tepig having a type disadvantage against it. Trip says it is intentional, as he says that Ash's nonsensical battling style is another experience for him to get stronger. Trip says that he'll win using the same method that Ash usually uses. Iris says that in the end, both are children.

Tepig uses Flame Charge and Vanillite uses Ice Beam, as both attacks collide to create water vapor. Tepig is able to break through to hit Vanillite. Vanillite uses Icicle Spear to hit Tepig. Tepig uses Ember to hurt Vanillite, as Ash comments that it isn't effective after being a direct hit. Iris tells Ash that Vanillite's defense is very high, and that it shows how well it has been raised. Vanillite uses Ice Shard to hit Tepig. Tepig uses Flame Charge and Vanillite uses Blizzard, as Tepig breaks through and hits Vanillite. Both Pokmon hit the ground and are very beat up. Both Pokmon faint, as the match up and battle end in a draw. Trip says that Ash's method doesn't suit him. Tepig looks sad, as Ash returns him to his Pok Ball. Trip says that at this rate, he's nowhere near Alder's level skills. Trip tells Ash that their match is on hold, as Ash says that he'll win next time.

Ash tells Pikachu that he learned from Trip, and that he's glad that he battled him. Iris says that now Ash knows why Oshawott's Aqua Jet doesn't hit its target as well. Ash says that it is still far from being mastered, and that they will do their best and practice. Ash says that he wants to meet Alder soon. Ash and Iris become hungry, as they realize that they forgot about Cilan and rush back to him. Cilan, Pansage, and Dwebble are waiting very patiently for them in the meantime.

Ash and Trip's Third Battle!

Season 14 | Episode 31

Ash and trip's third battle.

Our heroes stop for a lunch that Cilan is preparing—a gourmet meal, as usual. But Ash and Iris’s roughhousing ruins the lunch, so Cilan asks them to go and play elsewhere while he prepares lunch all over again.

Nearby, Ash’s rival Trip is catching a Palpitoad when Ash stumbles in and spoils Trip’s efforts. When Trip realizes Iris is from the Village of Dragons and that she’s working toward becoming a Dragon Master, Trip challenges her to a battle. But Ash wants to battle Trip instead—this would be their third bout! Trip is reluctant at first, but Iris pesters him into agreeing to a three-on-three battle with Ash.

Trip brings out his Servine and Ash starts with his Snivy, much to Trip and Iris’s surprise. Their reaction is vindicated when Snivy is soon defeated. Between rounds, Trip tells Ash about the Unova Champion, Alder, who Trip met as a little boy. Alder promised he would stay as Champion so that when Trip grew up, he could challenge Alder.

Anxious to do just that, Trip brings out his Timburr and Ash brings out Oshawott, who has been struggling in battle. We discover the reason Oshawott has been unsuccessful using Aqua Jet: Oshawott keeps its eyes completely closed during the move! But a final Razor Shell from Oshawott evens everything up to one win apiece.

Finally, Trip calls up Vanillite—an Ice-type Pokémon that scares and freezes Iris a bit—to take on Ash’s Tepig. After some truly fierce battling, the match ends up a draw!

Deciding that mimicking Ash’s off-the-wall battling style isn’t for him, Trip leaves to rethink his plans. Ash and Iris remember they left Cilan making lunch! They rush back and find a distraught Pokémon Connoisseur sadly musing on being stood up for lunch...

As the next Club Battle match begins, Luke is filming everything for his documentary. Freddy O'Martian declares that Trip will be fighting Cilan, who Don George notes will be a tough opponent as one of Striaton City’s Gym Leaders. On the field, Cilan warmly greets Trip and hopes that the battling flavor he saw during Trip's Striaton Gym challenge will re-emerge. Trip confidently asserts that he and his Pokémon have significantly improved since he beat Chili. Ash is excited to watch the battle and Iris tells him that while Trip seems very confident, she can't imagine Cilan losing. Burgundy, however, can and she declares that she wants Trip to give Cilan the beating of his life. As she rages, the battle commences with Cilan sending out Dwebble while Trip calls out his Gurdurr.

Cilan launches the first attack and Dwebble flies forward with an X-Scissor. Trip orders Gurdurr to dodge, and it slams its iron bar into the ground before heaving itself over to evade. Dwebble goes in for a Slash attack, but Gurdurr uses its steel beam to keep Dwebble away and flicks Dwebble overhead. Gurdurr sticks its beam into the ground and charges forward for a Rock Smash. Cilan cries out for Dwebble to dodge, which it does by retreating into its shell. However, the blow is so powerful that Dwebble's rock is cracked. Cilan cries out in horror while Burgundy smugly notes that Gurdurr just needs to keep it up to make her happy. Gurdurr attempts another Rock Smash, but at Cilan's call Dwebble scuttles out of range. Trip changes tactics and Gurdurr uses Stone Edge, hitting Dwebble hard. Don George notes that it was a super-effective move. Luke keeps his camera rolling to capture the exciting round, but Bianca sticks her head in front of the camera asking if he has seen Zorua. Luke pleads with her that he is busy but she insists that Zorua is missing and he should be looking for her. Luke awkwardly agrees.

Dwebble struggles to get up while Trip notes that he's impressed Cilan hasn't thrown in the towel. Cilan smiles and compliments Trip's improvement then declares that is evaluating time, much to the exasperation of Iris, who notes that they are in store for another Connoisseur moment. Burgundy however, is grinding her teeth and bursts out that she doesn't want to hear Cilan's evaluation, she wants him to flunk. Cilan compliments Gurdurr's harmoniously interwoven technique and power and in particular its well-defined muscles, allowing for a refreshing yet bold style. However, he declares that Dwebble and he will emerge victorious with a perfect recipe of offense and defense. Trip ignores Cilan and orders a barrage of Dynamic Punches, which Dwebble desperately dodges.

Bianca walks along a hallway, having looked everywhere for Zorua. She comes across Georgia and asks if she's seen Zorua, but Georgia silently shakes her head. Disappointed, Bianca walks further along until she runs into Georgia again. Excited, she asks if Georgia has seen Zorua, then pauses for thought, not grasping that she has already seen Georgia in this corridor. The first Georgia giggles and hugs the other Georgia, much to her disgust. Georgia picks up her clone and pulls her away, where she giggles and transforms back into Zorua. Gasping for excitement, Bianca runs after Zorua, telling her that they can watch the tournament together, not to be shy and that she has food. Georgia watches in perplexity.

Back with the battle, Trip orders Gurdurr to attack Dwebble up close. Gurdurr charges in with its steel beam, but Dwebble rolls aside and Cilan orders Shell Smash. It then uses Rock Slide to bury Gurdurr in stones. Trip cries out in astonishment while the commentator compliments the power of Rock Slide. Don George explains that Rock Slide was all the more powerful because Shell Smash amplified Dwebble's offense at the cost of some defense power. Burgundy demands to know whether Cilan's move is legal, while Iris excitedly assures her that it is and that it's very cool that Dwebble can use Rock Slide. Gurdurr manages to free its arms and begins to heave itself out of the rocks at Trip's encouragement. Cilan orders Dwebble in for a final Slash, striking Gurdurr just as it free itself only to collapse and be knocked out. As Cilan congratulates Dwebble, Trip takes their photo to chronicle his journey. Cilan boasts that he is happy to answer any of Luke's questions when the young movie maker arrives with his camera, but then the real Luke comes sprinting across the stadium and swipes his camera back from the giggling Zorua. Cilan abashedly suggests that there will be no interview.

Back in the stands, Burgundy is grinding her teeth and sulking about Cilan's victory while Bianca comes over to the group, telling them that she's been looking for Zorua. Ash reminds her that she is up next, which she has completely forgotten. Stephan grins and boasts that she is up against him, but once he wins he will be facing off with Ash. Bianca frowns and prepares for the battle.

The battle between Minccino and Zebstrika begins. Minccino uses Tickle to incapacitate Zebstrika, who has tears in its eyes from laughing. Minccino then uses Double Slap and Hyper Voice to knock Zebstrika back. Stephan calls for Zebstrika to stand its ground, and it retaliates with a Shock Wave, badly hurting Minccino. Bianca pleads with Minccino to get up, but a Stomp from Zebstrika knocks Minccino out and gives the victory to Stephan, who decides not to make an issue of the referee mispronouncing his name. Bianca picks up Minccino and cries out that her loss wasn't fair. Next, Luke's Golett slams into Scooter's Darmanitan, before using a Shadow Punch to knock it out, while Iris's Emolga uses Attract to incapacitate Jimmy Ray's male Watchog, before Iris orders Emolga to take Watchog down with Hidden Power. With the first round matches complete, Luke and Iris join Georgia, Ash, Cilan, Stephan, Dino and Antonio in Round 2. Don George dismisses the Trainers for the day, telling them they are free to stay at the Pokémon Center overnight before Round 2 and the semifinals the next day.

Later, Trip picks up his healed Gurdurr from Nurse Joy at the Pokémon Center, making preparations to leave Nimbasa Town. Ash asks Trip where he is going and he replies that he has things to do now that Gurdurr has been healed. Ash protests that the competition hasn't ended, and Trip shrugs, saying that his Pokémon won't get stronger by watching others battle. As Trip walks off, Cilan suggests to Ash that he let Trip be. Iris agrees but says that she still doesn't understand him. Ash calls out to Trip, suggesting that they have a battle next time they meet up. Trip doesn't look back but waves noncommittally.

Inside, Cilan has prepared a delicious dinner for his traveling companions and Stephan. Stephan sets down an enormous meal, which Ash challenges and piles up his own plate. The two begins shoveling down food, trying to outdo each other. Iris snorts that only little kids would have an eating contest, and then starts at a clone of herself standing behind her. The clone giggles and Iris realizes that it is Zorua. Right on cue, Bianca arrives and tries to lure Zorua away with food. Zorua into the air and turns into Axew, grabbing the hands of Iris's and spinning him around. Axew protests vocally, but Zorua only mocks him. Bianca seizes Axew against his will and Iris protests that she's made a mistake, but Bianca loudly maintains that she has Zorua. The two grow even louder and begin fighting over Axew. Meanwhile, Zorua wanders over to Luke, who is doing behind-the-scenes filming for his documentary. Luke asks Zorua to stop running away. However, having spotted Zorua, Bianca runs off and releases Axew, causing Iris and Axew to crash into the ground. Ash and Stephan obliviously continue shoveling food down, each pausing only to declare that they will win. As Ash starts to choke, Cilan chuckles as Iris calls them hungry little kids.

Later, Ash and Pikachu crash onto the mattress with very full stomachs. Iris exclaims in delight as Dwebble repairs the crack in its rock. Cilan is pleased as he says he might need Dwebble in Round 2, and this way it will be ready. Burgundy arrives and promises Cilan that any pairing he gets will be terrible and he will lose. With her remark said, Burgundy leaves, while Cilan moans that she proves that there is such a thing as too much spice.

The next day Ash sprints to the stadium, psyched for his next battle. Georgia walks up and tells Iris that it seems she's gotten a tiny bit stronger. The two taunt each other and talk themselves up. Cilan asks them to calm down until Zorua, imitating Georgia, turns up. Iris promptly moves Zorua's arms, which riles up her rival. Georgia quickly shrugs it off and tells Iris that they'll settle it in battle. In the stadium, the Freddy reveals the pairings: Ash against Georgia, Antonio against Dino, Luke against Cilan and Iris against Stephan.

Ash is excited to fight Georgia, wondering who she will fight with after using Beartic in Round 1. As he calls out Snivy, Georgia counters with Pawniard. Don George notes that it will be interesting to see how Ash and Snivy counter Pawniard's close-range battling skills. Ash orders a Leaf Storm, but Pawniard uses Metal Claw to slash up the leaves. Snivy tries another Leaf Storm, though Pawniard leaps over and gets in close on Georgia's instructions, dealing serious damage with a Metal Claw. Snivy gets to her feet and uses Attract in attempt to avoid another barrage of attacks. However, Attract does nothing, revealing Pawniard is female, to which Georgia criticizes Ash for being slow on the uptake. Pawniard rushes in with Iron Head. Snivy leaps upwards to evade, but the attack dislodges rocks which fly at Snivy. Using Vine Whip, Snivy clears the air. One of the repelled rocks impales on Pawniard's bladed head, forcing Pawniard to the ground under the weight, making Georgia gasp. Snivy hits with a barrage of Vine Whips, doing more damage, before wrapping the match up with Leaf Blade. At Georgia's urging, Pawniard rolls over and heaves itself onto her feet. The Leaf Blade strikes the rock on Pawniard's head, shattering it and freeing Pawniard. Georgia compliments Ash for putting up a fight, and then orders Pawniard to use Guillotine. Snivy dodges but the damage on the arena floor indicates the one-hit-KO nature of the attack. Pawniard launches another attack, but Snivy catches it with Vine Whip. As she is flailed around the air, Pawniard regains her footing and spins the much lighter Snivy around, thudding her to the ground and freeing herself from Snivy’s vines. Ash pleads with Snivy to get up as Pawniard prepares another Guillotine.

Cilan orders Dwebble in for a final Slash, striking Gurdurr just as it frees itself, only to collapse and be knocked out.

Appearance [ ]

Trip has neck-length dirty blonde hair and icy blue eyes. He wears a violet undershirt, an orange jacket over a dark-gray hooded sweater, a black waist-belt, white pants with black and white trainers and Trip is often seen with his camera, taking pictures of his journey.

Personality [ ]

While traveling to take on the Unova League , Trip takes photographs of Pokémon that he encounters and is also known as a Pokémon Photographer. Unlike Paul ( Ash Ketchum 's previous arch-rival), Trip cares for his Pokémon and does not consider them tools, but he prioritizes becoming a strong trainer, similar to Cheren from the games and he is quite obnoxious, much like Gary Oak . The main reason he took a dislike to Ash is because of his training style and more outgoing personality, whereas Trip tended to mostly keep to himself.

He is not as cocky as Gary or as harsh as Paul, but he had a strong dislike towards Ash. However, before running into Alder , they were shown to have at least something resembling mutual respect.

Unlike Gary, who enjoyed picking on Ash, and Paul, who outright hated his guts, Trip saw Ash as an annoyance but was occasionally willing to help him out, such as when he showed him how Oshawott could not land Aqua Jet because its eyes were closed.

Trip is bound to learn that becoming the champion does not depend on just becoming strong. His goal was to become the next Pokémon Champion of the Unova region, but was defeated by Ash in the first round of the Unova League.

Trip is somewhat xenophobic, as he does not think very highly of the Kanto region — or anyone from there. He thinks of anyone from Kanto as a redneck from "the boonies" who should go back to the basics of Pokémon.

Trip mellowed out considerably after his battle with Alder. Realizing that he was not a high-level trainer as he thought he was, he (mostly) ceased belittling people he saw as beneath him. When he left the Junior Cup, he expressed a genuine interest in battling Ash at the forthcoming Unova League.

After losing to Ash at the league, he dropped any disdain he still had for Ash and they now consider each other friends.

Biography [ ]

Trip promising to battle Alder.

While Trip was a kid, he watched the battle of Alder against a trainer. After Alder won the battle, he advised Trip to grow stronger and take on the League if he wanted to challenge Alder one day. [1]

BW001 10

Trip receives his Pokédex, starting his journey.

Trip was a beginning trainer who went to Nuvema Town to choose his first Pokémon. Ash Ketchum was friendly to him at first, but Trip rejected Ash's attempt to become acquainted as he refuses to be friends with someone from the "boonies". After some thinking, Trip chose Snivy as his starter Pokémon and was given five Poké Balls and a Pokédex as well. Later on, Trip came out and started taking pictures of his journey, including Pikachu , because it was a rare thing to see in Unova. Trip wondered if it was strong and challenged Ash to a battle. Because of Zekrom , Pikachu's power was weakened and it was unable to use Electric-type moves. Pikachu tried to attack with Iron Tail and Quick Attack , but it was defeated by Snivy's Leaf Tornado . Trip taunted Ash, telling him to go back to the basics as he left for Accumula Town . [2]

As he set off on the Unova journey, Ash was reminded he could run into Trip and Snivy, while going to Striaton City . [3]

Trip annoying Ash

As Ash came to the Battle Club, he was startled to see Trip enlisted in. Cilan remembered Trip actually battled Chili in the Striaton City's Gym and won the Trio Badge . Per request, Don George contacted Trip. Trip was displeased at Ash, since he reminded Ash Snivy won against Pikachu. However, Trip was slightly curious and came to the Battle Club, agreeing on a 6-on-6 battle. Ash admitted he only had 5 Pokémon, making Trip annoyed and refused the battle. Iris managed to taunt Trip, claiming he was a little kid, so Trip accepted a 5-on-5 battle. Trip sent Tranquill against Ash's Oshawott , who was immediately defeated by Tranquill's Aerial Ace (due to Tranquill's Super Luck ability). Ash sent Tepig to battle, who was also defeated, by a combination of Work Up and Aerial Ace. Tranquill attempted to defeat Pikachu with the same combo, but Pikachu grabbed Tranquill's leg, threw it away and defeated it with Volt Tackle . Trip sent Servine, who evolved from Snivy. Servine managed to hit Pikachu with Leaf Tornado and defeated him with Cut . Trip chided Ash, doubting he would win, but Ash sent Snivy, who got hit by Servine's attacks. Using Attract , Snivy infatuated Servine and managed to defeat it. For his next Pokémon, Trip sent Frillish, while Ash swapped Snivy for Pidove . Pidove tried to attack, but Frillish defended itself and defeated Pidove with Water Pulse . Ash sent Snivy back, who used Vine Whip , but due to Cursed Body , Snivy couldn't execute the move any more. Frillish dodged Attract and defeated Snivy with a combination of Water Pulse and Hex . Trip then stated that Pikachu and Snivy were improving well, but the rest of his team members were a worthless, pathetic joke, and so was their Trainer. Ash promised to become stronger and battle Trip again. [4]

Trip came to Castelia City and was using his Lampent to get rid of a swarm of Venipede , teaming up with other Fire-Type trainers. After destroying a large amount of the Venipede, Ash tried to stop him. Trip ignored Ash and told Lampent to hit the leader of the Venipede with Shadow Ball . Ash jumped in the way and got injured, then said they should move them out of the way. Trip first refused. He finally agreed, and they cleared out the Venipede with their Tranquill. Trip jokingly said he'd battle Ash again once he was worthy, marking a minor sprout in their friendship. Trip left off, since he couldn't wait too much for the Castelia City's Gym to be opened. [5]

BW033 8

Trip takes a photo of Iris' Axew.

Trip was in the area and attempted to catch a Palpitoad , but Ash interfered and caused Trip, by accident, to hit Ash with the Ball. Trip was furious, but noticing Iris and Axew , he took a picture of Axew, who was from the Village of Dragons . Trip, however, claimed Iris was disrespectful for her fear of Ice-type Pokémon. Ash tried to challenge Trip to a battle, but Trip ignored him, wanting to challenge Iris. Iris, however, claimed she was not in a top-mood, since Trip would only challenge Axew as her only Dragon-type Pokémon. Trip almost left, but was taunted by Iris (who called him a kid again) to battle Ash. Trip decided a 3-on-3 battle and sent Servine against Ash's Snivy. This surprised Trip, claiming Servine was stronger than Snivy. This time, Servine managed to hit Snivy with Leaf Tornado, dodge her Attract attack and defeat her with Cut. As they sent their Pokémon, Trip admitted he wants to become strong enough to defeat the Champion, Alder. Ash sent Oshawott against Trip's Timburr. Oshawott was intimidated, but Ash encouraged Oshawott to battle. Oshawott repeatedly used Aqua Jet , but continuously missed. Trip took some photos and showed to Ash Oshawott's eyes are closed when he uses Aqua Jet. Timburr managed to hit Oshawott with Low Kick , but Oshawott retaliated with Water Gun and defeated Timburr with Razor Shell . To copy Ash's battling style, Trip sent Vanillite, a Pokémon with type disadvantage against Tepig. Tepig managed to hit Vanillite with Flame Charge , but got hit by Ice Beam . Vanillite used Blizzard against Tepig's Flame Charge, causing a double knockout and ending the match in a tie. Trip left, while Ash promised he will defeat Trip one day. [1] Remembering Trip's photos of Oshawott, who closed its eyes while using Aqua Jet, Ash decided to train Oshawott. [6]

BW042 10

Trip decides to leave the Tournament, after his loss.

Trip came to the local Battle Club Tournament in Nimbasa Town and registered for participation, then left off. He later learned he would have to fight Cilan, the Gym Leader. After watching the battle of Georgia vs. Ash, he commented Ash was lucky enough to win the battle. He came to the battlefield and faced Cilan. [7] Cilan sent Dwebble against Trip's Gurdurr. During the clash, Gurdurr managed to hit Dwebble with Rock Smash , leaving a crack in Dwebble's rock. Cilan's Dwebble avoided Dynamic Punch attack, then used Shell Smash and imprisoned Gurdurr with Rock Slide , causing it to be separated from the rail it carried. With X-Scissor , Dwebble defeated Gurdurr. Trip took a picture of Cilan, saying it was to remember his anger and frustration. After healing his Gurdurr, Trip decided to leave. Ash tried to persuade Trip to stay, who believed he wouldn't get stronger by just watching how others battle and went off. [8]

BW054 5

Trip expresses his desire to battle the Champion, Alder.

Trip came to a small town, where he met the heroes (to his displeasure). Ash showed he got four badges, while Trip obtained five. Regardless, Trip admitted he came to find Alder, the Champion, and request for a battle. Trip told Alder was seen nearby; the group encountered Alder on Officer Jenny 's motorcycle, since he flirted with her. Alder fell down, since Jenny refused his charms. Trip came to Alder, who recognized Trip as "Tristan". Trip and Ash challenged Alder to a battle, but Alder claimed he could only battle one at a time. Trip allowed Ash to go first, since Trip could study Alder's battle strategies. Trip watched the battle, surprised Alder did not do anything to counter Pikachu's moves against his Bouffalant . Trip was annoyed to see Alder was actually sleeping and yelled at Alder, who woke up. Alder confessed his loss and claimed he was too hungry to have a battle with Trip. Trip reminded Alder about telling Trip the importance of strength. Alder could not remember he told this to "Tristan", causing Trip even more annoyance and he left. [9]

BW073 18

Trip about to defeat a frustrated Bianca with her Emboar.

Trip came to the Clubsplosion and registered in the event with his Conkeldurr, who evolved from Gurrdurr. Ash was amazed and was reminded many fighting-type Pokémon would participate. Trip chided Ash, who was angered and tried to backtalk to Trip, but was stopped by Trip's Conkeldurr. Trip saw he would face Bianca in the first round, thinking it would be a very easy fight he'd win. [10] Trip managed to take photos of Iris' battle with Burgundy . Trip also told Ash he won his battle against Angus and Simisage by pure luck, considering him "low class", for Scraggy didn't even manage to master his newly learned Focus Blast attack. Regardless, Trip faced Bianca in the battle and sent Conkeldurr against Bianca's Emboar . Conkeldurr managed to block Emboar's attacks and trapped him inside Rock Tomb , then proceeded to defeat Emboar with Stone Edge . [11] Fortunately for Bianca, Emboar managed to collect the stones and use Fling to throw the stones back at Conkeldurr. Conkeldurr deflected the attacks, but Emboar took its concrete pillars and threw them in its face, defeating Conkeldurr and Trip. Trip saw he had much to learn and still planned on defeating Alder. With his Conkeldurr healed, Trip declined Ash's battle challenge and left off. [12]

Trip came to Lacunosa Town to participate in the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup . Trip encountered Alder and was still annoyed by his goofy personality. Regardless, his aim was to battle his way to the top and defeat Alder. In the first round, Trip faced Burgundy and her Darmanitan , where his Servine was revealed to have evolved into Serperior. It frightened Darmanitan with Leer and then finished it off with Solar Beam . This made Burgundy sad and Ash shocked Trip won the battle so easily and quickly. [13] Trip managed to defeat Manning and Heatmor with Serperior and advance to the Semi-Finals. Trip met up with Cynthia , who asked him why wasn't he watching the battles. Trip claimed he already had planned his strategies, but his desire was to defeat Alder and face Cynthia next. His next opponent was Cilan and sent Serperior against his Crustle. Using the same tactics, Serperior used Leer and Solar Beam, but Crustle managed to withstand the attacks. After dodging Rock Slide and X-Scissor, Serperior defeated Crustle with Frenzy Plant . Alder was impressed, thinking Trip will go far - a point Trip wanted to prove by defeating Alder, after winning the final match. [14]

BW094 14

Alder presents Trip with the Junior Cup trophy.

Trip watched the battle against Ash and Iris, and was even worried at Iris' Dragonite 's power. With Iris defeated, Trip faced Ash in the finals, sending Serperior against Ash's Pignite. Pignite and Serperior launched their attacks at each other, but both had missed their targets continuously. In the end, Serperior tried to leer Pignite, who jumped up, but was hit by Solar Beam. Pignite retaliated with Fire Pledge , but missed and was defeated by Serperior's Frenzy Plant. Trip was the winner of the Cup and received the trophy from Alder. As promised, Alder battled Trip by sending Bouffalant against Trip's Serperior. Serperior charged itself with Solar Beam, as the battle started. [15] Bouffalant withstood Solar Beam and Dragon Tail , surprising Trip at Bouffalant's guts. Alder reminded Trip he was battling a Champion and had Bouffalant attack with Head Charge , defeating Serperior with one attack. Alder pointed out it did not matter if one won or lost, for one should always be with their Pokémon through the battles, claiming that is the true strength that comes from the battles. Trip admitted he did like Serperior and promised to have a rematch with Alder one day to prove what he had learned. Later on, Trip bid farewell with the heroes on somewhat less hostile terms, glad to have battled Alder - and have grown stronger. Iris, meanwhile, noticed that Trip had greatly subdued his nasty attitude. [16]

BW105 20

Trip manages to throw Ash off-balance, as his strategy is working.

Trip came to Vertress City to enter the Unova League. He met up with the heroes and asked of Ash not to lose before their battle. This surprised Ash, Iris and Cilan, seeing Trip had changed. Trip saw he was to battle Ash in the first round - a battle Trip was actually looking forward to. Trip used Serperior and Ash used Pikachu, so Cilan commented Trip wanted to take advantage of speed to win the round. Serperior dodged Pikachu's attacks and retaliated with Dragon Tail, hitting Pikachu. Trip smiled, for his strategy was working. [17] Trip's Serperior continued attacking Pikachu and managed to bind it by using Wrap . Pikachu retaliated with Thunderbolt , though Serperior bound his tail to the ground, negating the damage. Pikachu managed to free itself by using Iron Tail on the ground and clashed with Serperior. For a final clash, Pikachu used Iron Tail and Electro Ball at the same time. Serperior withstood the attack, but took too much damage and fainted. After his defeat, Trip bumped into Ash at the Pokémon Center . Trip did not bear any grudge, for he decided to grow stronger and challenge Alder one day. Ash and Trip shook hands, as Trip went off to continue his journey. [18]

Looking at the battlefield of the Unova League one last time, Ash remembered his adventures that led him to this place, including his own rival, Trip. [19]

Trip was seen in Best Wishes! ending theme. Trip continued his journey with Serperior and took some photos.

For example, the new Icon of the Seas (scheduled to debut in 2024) plans to have the largest water park at sea, the largest swimming pool at sea, and a range of over-the-top cabins and suites for families of all sizes.

Meanwhile, Carnival currently operates 25 different vessels with a few more on the way. Newer ships like Carnival Celebration and Carnival Venezia aren't as large and grand as Royal Caribbean ships, nor are the brand-new vessels the company is planning for late 2023 and 2024. For example, the new Carnival Jubilee that is set to begin sailing later in 2023 will have 15 passenger decks and capacity for up to 6,631 guests, compared to 18 guest decks and 7,600 passengers on Icon of the Seas.

Comparing cabins across cruise lines as a whole isn't an easy feat, mostly because companies tend to offer larger suites and cabins with a better layout on their newer ships . You'll therefore likely have a nicer cabin on one of Carnival's newest vessels compared to an older ship from Royal Caribbean, and of course the opposite is also true. Cabin sizes and layouts also vary widely across the vessels of both brands, and that's true even for basic interior, ocean view and balcony cabins.

That said, Royal Caribbean still comes out ahead in this category, since the line boasts more square footage in some of the most basic cabins as well as more over-the-top luxury accommodations, especially for families.

As an example, most inside cabins on Allure of the Seas feature 172 square feet of space, whereas Carnival Celebration's inside cabins are slightly smaller at 158 square feet. Meanwhile, the largest suites on Celebration are the Carnival Excel Presidential Suite, with 1,120 square feet of space including the balcony, and the Carnival Excel Aft Suite, which has 861 square feet of interior and balcony space. Compare those options to the Sky Loft Suites on Allure of the Seas, which feature 1,132 square feet across the room and balcony, and the spacious two-bedroom AquaTheater Suites with 1,595 square feet including the balcony.

Food options vary widely across vessels within any cruise brand, and this is especially true with Royal Caribbean and Carnival. For example, older ships from both cruise lines offer fewer specialty dining options overall along with the main dining rooms and buffet options cruisers come to expect, whereas newer ships from both lines feature a lot more unique and innovative options.

When you view the cruise dining options from both lines, you'll quickly find that both Carnival and Royal Caribbean pull out all the stops when it comes to food. For example, Carnival ships include a range of eateries from large and expansive buffets to main dining rooms to unique offerings like Big Chicken, Guy's Burger Joint and BlueIguana Cantina. Meanwhile, specialty dining on Carnival vessels features options like teppanyaki, Emeril's Bistros at Sea and Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse.

Royal Caribbean ships feature convenient buffets and main dining room experiences, as well as included options like pizza kitchens, noodle bars and casual fast food. Specialty dining on Royal Caribbean ranges from the brand's Chef's Table experience to Johnny Rockets' burgers and shakes to innovative fine dining at Wonderland.

Drink packages

A group of friends enjoying drinks at Lime and Coconut on Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas.

Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer drink packages that cruisers can purchase as part of their vacation to get a more all-inclusive feel . Then again, the value of these packages depends on how much you drink over the course of your trip. Also note that the cost of drink packages across all cruise lines can vary depending on the ship, itinerary, travel dates, length of trip and more.

Royal Caribbean comes out slightly ahead in this category because the line offers three tiers of drink packages for guests with different needs. Choose from the Classic Soda Package; the Refreshment Package, which includes soda along with coffees, juices and even milkshakes at Johnny Rockets; and the Deluxe Beverage Package, which adds in beer, cocktails and wine by the glass. Meanwhile, Carnival offers just two different drink packages: the Bottomless Bubbles package, which covers soft drinks and juice, and the Cheers! drink package, which adds in spirits and cocktails, beer, wine by the glass, specialty coffee, energy drinks and more.

Onboard activities

A waterslide on Royal Caribbean's Odyssey of the Seas.

Analyzing onboard activities across cruise lines isn't always easy – you really have to break down this category by ship for a true comparison. When you do that with Carnival and Royal Caribbean, you'll find that both lines offer fun activities for all ages, from onboard water parks to hosted games, casinos and more.

That said, Royal Caribbean does take things up a notch in this category, especially on the line's newer ships. Some Royal Caribbean vessels offer escape rooms, surf simulators, zip lines, game shows and over-the-top water parks with incredible slides for thrill-seekers. For example, Freedom of the Seas boasts huge onboard waterslides, glow-in-the-dark laser tag, mini-golf and more. Don't forget about Icon of the Seas with its massive water park and pool offerings in the works. Meanwhile, standout activities on Carnival ships include Family Feud Live, onboard water parks and the thrilling SkyRide.

Live entertainment

The quality of cruise ship entertainment varies widely based on the quality of the talent booked for individual ships. Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer their share of live music and entertainment, including performances by bands and singers, karaoke, and piano bars. Meanwhile, both lines also boast their own theaters on every vessel, which often feature Broadway-style shows, singing and dancing, comedy acts, and more.

Royal Caribbean comes out ahead in this category since its vessels feature award-winning musicals like "Hairspray," "Mamma Mia!" and "Cats." The open-air AquaTheater on Oasis Class ships also wows guests with incredible diving feats, stunts and aerial acrobatics. Some Royal Caribbean ships even have onboard ice skating performances and ice games.

Kids programming

Winner: Carnival

Both cruise lines have kids clubs that cater to younger guests of all ages, with each one offering supervised care so parents can drop the kids off for some alone time or a quiet dinner on the ship. However, Carnival stands out slightly in this category due to the six different clubs offered across the fleet for children and teens between 6 months and 17 years old. Carnival also offers supervised Night Owls services for kids 11 and younger, which lets parents get out and have some late-night fun for an extra charge.

Royal Caribbean offers four kids clubs for children ages six months to 12, along with a separate club for tweens and teens . Supervised child care is available for free during the day, and you can opt for paid care after hours as well.

Adults-only offerings

A group of adults drinking and laughing at the Serenity Retreat on Carnival Cruise Line's Mardi Gras.

Both cruise lines offer their share of adults-only spaces and things to do, from onboard casinos to luxurious spas to bars that offer cocktails and live entertainment at all hours of the day and night. Carnival and Royal Caribbean also offer adults-only areas on some of their ships.

On Carnival, for example, cruisers will find the Serenity Adults-Only Retreat for sailors 21 and older with extra space and comfortable chairs for relaxation, along with its own bar nearby. On many Royal Caribbean vessels, on the other hand, the onboard Solarium for ages 16-plus has its own pool and extra space to find peace and quiet.

Carnival's Serenity relaxation area is included for guests. While Royal Caribbean's Solarium is typically also included, on certain sailings there is restricted access by fare class.

Shore excursions

Shore excursions offered by cruise lines are largely operated by third-party companies and are often the same across brands. Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean boast a broad selection of excursions in destinations around the world, from snorkeling and scuba tours in the Caribbean to city tours, horseback riding, cooking classes and more.

Both cruise lines offer private and custom tours you can book through your ship as well.

Private island experiences

Aerial of Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay private island.

Royal Caribbean and Carnival each have their own private island in the Bahamas , which is included in most itineraries to this part of the world. These private islands provide a fun beach escape for families to enjoy, whether you want to relax in the sun or take part in some of the available activities.

Royal Caribbean's private island, called Perfect Day at CocoCay, is the more impressive option due to everything it includes: a heart-thumping water park, its own wave pool, a zip line, a hot air balloon experience and overwater bungalows you can book for the day, among other offerings. Meanwhile, Carnival's Half Moon Cay has a unique beached pirate ship to explore – but fewer amenities overall.

Note that both private islands have plenty of beach space for guests to spread out and relax, as well as restaurants and bars. You can also book excursions on both private islands, which include activities like snorkeling and water sports.

Comparing costs across cruise lines can be tricky since fares and available sales vary throughout the year, as well as based on the vessel booked, the cruise itinerary, the number and age of travelers, and more. To get an idea of who wins on price, we looked for two similar cruises on comparable ships from Carnival and Royal Caribbean, then priced out an option for a family of four with two children ages 8 and 10. For the purpose of this comparison, we used seven-night eastern Caribbean cruises on Carnival Celebration and Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, both of which began sailing in 2022.

The Carnival Celebration itinerary from Miami stops in Amber Cove, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico ; and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands . By comparison, the Wonder of the Seas sailing leaves from Port Canaveral, Florida, with stops in Philipsburg, St. Maarten ; San Juan; and Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas.

The chart below shows the total cost (including taxes and fees) for a family of four in January 2024 in both an ocean view and a typical balcony cabin across both cruise lines. Note that, for the purpose of this comparison, we selected the least expensive room option in each category.

Summary [ ]

Ash pleads with Snivy to get up as Pawniard prepares another Guillotine.

cilan vs trip

Cilan grew up with two brothers, Chili and Cress , in their hometown of Striaton City in the Unova region. At some point during their childhood, Cilan received a Pansage as his first partner Pokémon , while Chili and Cress received a Pansear and Panpour , respectively. Years later, Cilan and his brothers became the Striaton Gym Leaders while also running a café together.

Pokémon the Series: Black & White

cilan vs trip

Cilan debuted in Triple Leaders, Team Threats! , where he was running errands in Striaton. He was intrigued to see an Axew and remarked that it and Iris seemed to be perfect partners. He then noticed Pikachu and examined it excitedly, having never seen one before. When Ash explained he wanted to challenge the Striaton Gym , Cilan happily showed them the way. He leads them to a café and sits them down at a table, despite their obvious confusion. After toying with Ash for a bit, Cilan reveals that he, along with his brothers Chili and Cress, are the Gym Leaders at the Striaton Gym. After introducing their Pokémon to Ash, he and his brothers were shocked to hear he wanted to battle all of them, but they happily accepted his offer. Cilan served the role as the judge for his brothers' battles, and finally faced off as Ash's final opponent. After a heated battle with Cilan, which carried on to Dreams by the Yard Full! , Ash wins and gets the Trio Badge . After the battle, Cilan meets up with Ash at the Pokémon Center and begs him to tell him his battle secrets for future reference as a Connoisseur. After spending the day with Ash and Iris, Cilan decided to accompany them on Ash's journey, serving as the navigation as well as the cook as revealed in Snivy Plays Hard to Catch! .

In A Home for Dwebble! , the group encountered a wild Dwebble making its shell. After it was stolen by a group of thieving Dwebble, Cilan sent out his Pansage to follow them. With no luck, the group approached the Dwebble with empathy, but this only scared it and caused it to lash out at their Pokémon. It ended up hitting Pansage with a stray rock, which later ended up making him ill. Once he recovered, they unsuccessfully attempted to help Dwebble retrieve his shell in a 3-to-1 battle. Cilan then hatched a plan to lure the Dwebble away with Pokémon food so that the Dwebble to battle them one at a time. The plan was a success and the Dwebble urged to be a part of Cilan's team, who was happy to have it on board.

cilan vs trip

In A Connoisseur's Revenge! , Cilan revealed that he is an A-class Pokémon Connoisseur after Ash found a Connoisseur's shop in a Poké Mart . After doing some shopping, Cilan and Iris found Ash in a different Connoisseur shop belonging to a C-Class Connoisseur named Burgundy . Burgundy instantly recognized Cilan, who stated that he had defeated her in a Gym battle sometime before meeting Ash. Seeking total revenge, Burgundy challenged Cilan to a battle to prove she was a better Connoisseur, putting Ash's Pokémon on the line. Cilan accepted the battle, as well as responsibility for whatever might happen to Ash's Pokémon as a result of the battle, much to Ash's dismay. However, Cilan managed to defeat Burgundy without much trouble, and she decided to start her own journey. As the group was seeing Burgundy off, Cilan stepped forward and offered a few words of encouragement to his new rival, who still swore revenge on him and ran off.

He revealed that he has quite a knack for scientifically thinking in A Night in the Nacrene City Museum! , as well as in A UFO for Elgyem! , when he, Ash, and Iris witnessed a UFO landing. This led them to the home of Professor Icarus , a scientist in UFO engineering who Cilan admires.

Cilan showed off some of his skills as a fisherman in Facing Fear with Eyes Wide Open! , where he fished a Stunfisk out of a lake that was preventing Ash and Oshawott from retrieving a water herb that would heal their poisoned Pokémon, using a lure that resembled himself. Though Stunfisk put up a struggle, Cilan confused it by twirling it around in the air with his fishing rod before he slammed it to the ground. This left it unable to battle and he captured it. These skills were put to use again in A Fishing Connoisseur in a Fishy Competition! when he managed to hook a Basculin during a fake fishing competition held by Team Rocket .

In Reunion Battles In Nimbasa! , Cilan signed up to participate in the Club Battle tournament in Nimbasa Town along with his friends. He also reunited with Burgundy who was still determined to get her revenge. It was revealed that his first opponent would be Trip and their battle began in the next episode . He chose Dwebble to go up against Trip's Gurdurr . Initiating all of Dwebble's skills, Cilan was able to defeat him and advance to the second round of the competition, much to Burgundy's dislike. In The Club Battle Hearts of Fury: Emolga Versus Sawk! , his second round opponent was Luke . Cilan chose Stunfisk to go up against Luke's Larvesta and lost, thus knocking Cilan out of the tournament.

cilan vs trip

In Crisis from the Underground Up! and Battle For The Underground! , Cilan revealed he had an extensive knowledge of trains, and had once met Emmet and Ingo at a train convention. He even donned a black conductor's hat similar to Ingo's. Later when Team Rocket had stolen all of the Pokémon at the Pokémon Center, Cilan used his knowledge to become a major asset for Emmet and Ingo and help rescue the stolen Pokémon.

In Lost at the Stamp Rally! , Cilan competed in the Subway Bosses' Stamp Rally for a chance to battle either Ingo or Emmet. He collected all of the stamps except for one, though regardless, the Subway Bosses agreed to have a Tag Battle against Cilan and Ash as thanks for saving the Nimbasa Subway network from Team Rocket earlier.

In A Call for Brotherly Love! , Cilan was able to meet up with his brother Chili. Chili told him that he came to view the progress of his studying and immediately asked him for a battle to which Cilan accepted. He was able to easily able to defeat Chili's Pansear with his Pansage which provoked a fight between the High Temp Pokémon and its Trainer. He later learned from Cress that Chili had run away from the Gym because he criticized his battling style. Cilan decided that he would help Chili find his own battle style. While Cress said that Chili needed to not focus on offense so much and focus more on defense, Cilan thought it would be better for him to continue to focus on his offense under the premise of "a good offense is a good defense". He believed that teaching Pansear Solar Beam would be a good way for Pansear to defend itself against Water-types and it successfully learned the move with the help of Pansage.

In Cilan Takes Flight! , upon seeing that Skyla was not exercising her job as a Gym Leader properly, he decided to battle her. After seeing that her "Air Battle" system was only trusting in type match-up, when she told him that she was going to win, he put his efforts after his previous experiences where types didn't tell the outcome of the battle. However, as she had predicted he lost the battle, leaving Ash to attempt in making her have a change of heart, in which he succeeded.

In The Clubsplosion Begins! , Cilan entered the Clubsplosion that was held in Ambiga Town 's Battle Club . He was able to defeat Flora in the first round, but lost to Stephan in the second, much to Burgundy's delight.

In Clash of the Connoisseurs! , he was hired by Mr. Hatterly along with Ricard Nouveau , another A-class Connoisseur, in order to choose Mr. Hatterly's daughter 's first Pokémon. Cilan and Ricard didn't come to an agreement due to both having different points of view, and a duel between both Connoisseurs ensued. Even though Ricard's Premium Brand was the Pokémon of Cilan's phobia, a Purrloin , Cilan remained victorious. He then revealed to Mr. Hatterly that he had found out that his daughter had already befriended a Pokémon, a Foongus , and convinced him that this would be the best partner for his daughter.

In Piplup, Pansage, and a Meeting of the Times! , shortly after arriving at Cynthia 's villa in Undella Town , Cilan asked to battle Dawn as he wanted to evaluate a Pokémon that had been raised by a Coordinator . He chose to use his Pansage against Dawn's Piplup , and was surprised to see his strategies being countered and used against him. During the battle, Cilan gave an evaluation of Dawn's bond with Piplup, saying that he could sense that the two were friends by the way Piplup used his moves . The battle was eventually interrupted by Meloetta .

In Jostling for the Junior Cup! , Cilan entered the Pokémon World Tournament Junior Cup . He managed to defeat Shepherd and Horatio in the first and second rounds, respectively, assuring his progression to the semifinals. There, he faced off against Trip , using his Crustle against Trip's Serperior . Despite his efforts, Cilan ended up being defeated and was eliminated from the tournament.

In A Surface to Air Tag Battle Team! , Cilan and Ash battled brothers Soren and Rocko in a Tag Battle and won the match. Afterwards, the brothers began blaming each other for the loss, so Cilan provided a Connoisseur evaluation and concluded that they needed to catch some Water Pokémon. Rocko and Soren soon caught themselves a Corphish and Buizel , respectively, and immediately started working on new battle combinations.

In Farewell, Unova! Setting Sail for New Adventures! , Cilan, Ash, and Iris traveled to the Decolore Islands as a means to travel to Ash's home in Pallet Town . On the island, the group entered a Pokémon Sumo Tournament , which Cilan entered Pansage in. Pansage won in the beginning round, but was eventually defeated. After this, Alexa and the group decided to travel together throughout the rest of their adventures in the Decolore Islands.

In Survival of the Striaton Gym! , Chili and Cress called Cilan, asking him to come to Paladin Island . There, he learned that Morana had defeated both Chili and Cress and threatened to take over the Striaton Gym. In order to protect the Gym, Cilan battled her Abomasnow with Pansage. After defeating her, she told Cilan that she will win next time and departed. Cilan briefly considered returning to the Gym to protect it from people like Morana, but Chili and Cress encouraged him to continue traveling.

In Best Wishes Until We Meet Again! , when the group arrived in Kanto , Cilan and Iris decided that they will stop traveling with Ash. Cilan decided to travel to Johto to compete in the Old Rod Fishing Rally that was being hosted by Mr. Briney from the Hoenn region. He also decided to start anew as a Connoisseur. As such, he chose to travel with Iris on the Magnet Train and then set forth to the competition once in Johto and to start anew.

Cilan appeared in Ash's fantasy in The Dream Continues! .

In BWS01 , after parting ways with Iris, Cilan met up with Brock . Together, they successfully quelled a rampaging Gyarados and stopped a Pokémon poacher named Amer . By the end of the episode, however, neither were introduced to each other or knew that Ash was a mutual friend of theirs.

Pokémon the Series: XY

Cilan appeared again in XYS06 . He was shown to have traveled to the Kalos region to participate in a fishing tournament in Lumiose City , during which he met Clemont and Bonnie . When Cilan reveals that he would like to visit the Prism Tower , Clemont and Bonnie agree to accompany him there. On Cilan's suggestion, the three decide to take the subway to the tower, but Bonnie ends up boarding a runaway train alone. Clemont and Cilan manage to stop the train and rescue Bonnie with the help of Clemont's special lure , his Aipom Arm, and Cilan's fishing skills. They later send out Pansage and Chespin to battle an Eelektross who had been causing the subway problems, before realizing it was lost and sick from electrical overcharge . After helping the Eelektross, Cilan heads off to Shalour City to visit the Tower of Mastery .

Cilan found himself trapped in illusions with Ingo and Emmet . Other appearances

Cilan made a cameo appearance in the ending credits of I Choose You! .

cilan vs trip

Cilan tends to use the phrase "It's <verb> time!" when addressing a special scenario, such as when he evaluates Pokémon and human relations he says, "It's evaluating time!" in the dub and "It's tasting time!" in the original. During Gym battles in the dub, he will use the phrase, "It's time for the battle to be served!" When catching a Pokémon, he uses the line 「 _____ゲットでグッドテイスト! 」 in the original. He has used different phrases for catching Pokémon in the dub, however.

Like Brock , he has proved himself to be a good cook as he prepares meals for the group, and he also has a very broad knowledge about Pokémon. Cilan also navigates the group on their journey through use of his Town Map , much like Max who had a PokéNav , and Brock who had maps and a Pokégear .

As a Pokémon Connoisseur , he can read into people's personalities and often finds the best ways to approach them. He's patient and caring towards Ash and Iris , often offering them advice when they don't know what to do. While he has been shown to lose his temper, he quickly moves on and will go out of his way to make up for it. He tends to be an optimist looking at things positively rather than wallowing in defeat.

cilan vs trip

He is also shown to be afraid of the paranormal which has made him a skeptic, preferring to find logical scientific explanations for everything, but when he can't find a logical explanation he is typically the first to flee. His love for science is later emphasized upon encountering a possible UFO sighting which leads to him meeting one of his mentors, Professor Icarus .

Cilan also has a passion for sleuthing and will sometimes play detective. He even has a special hat that he wears and a magnifying glass. But he does more than just play as he was able to draw conclusions and come up with ideas in order to find the missing Audino in Where Did You Go, Audino? .

In Purrloin: Sweet or Sneaky? , it was revealed that Cilan also has a fear of Purrloin . He stated that one of them did something terrible to him, which he refused to talk about as he didn't want to remember it. In Cilan and the Case of the Purrloin Witness! , Cilan overcame his fear a little bit, but never truly got over it. The reason for his fear is unknown, although he has told Ash and Iris about it.

He, like his brothers, often speaks about Pokémon in relation to their element; in Cilan's case, leaves and herbs. All the brothers tend to use hand positions like rock, paper, and scissors - Cilan emphasizes words using his fingers.

cilan vs trip

During his time running the Striaton Gym with his brothers, Cilan usually specialized in Grass-type Pokémon. However, during his travel with Ash, Cilan caught Pokémon that are strong against opponents that have the advantage over Grass-type, such as his Crustle and Stunfisk , who are strong against Fire and Flying-type Pokémon.

Although he doesn't do a lot of training with his Pokémon, they seems to be capable battlers, as they have helped Cilan in the many tournaments he participated in.
