UK Country Music July 2022

Lionesses Cowboy Style

The Lionesses Roar

Welcome to the UK Country Music July 2022 update.

July 2022 will go down in history as the month when England’s Lionesses brought home the glory when they won the Euros.

There is also a roar from the women of  country music. Laura Evans joins the TBCMF “team lineup”, Emilia Quinn has been “selected” to play tour support for Jade Helliwell, Motel Sundown scores early and “parks the bus” with the release of their debut album.

July was another busy month as artists released songs that would become the summer soundtrack, and festival news continued to flow. In last month’s round-up, we shared that The Wandering Hearts had performed a great set at BST Hyde Park. Still, as we crept into July, we announced the great news that the trio would join us in Blackpool at the beginning of September for The British Country Music Festival.

If you are not barefoot in July, then you are overdressed.

The Wandering Hearts

The Wandering Hearts commented: “This will be our first visit to Blackpool, and we are thrilled to be performing at The British Country Music Festival in September. With the launch of the album, we have amazing new music to share. We ’ re looking forward to playing the iconic Empress Ballroom, meeting fellow artists and seeing fans on the dance floor! ”

Laura Evans State of Mind

Also newly announced on the lineup was Laura Evans. She is currently making waves in the scene with her album ‘State of Mind’ getting rave reviews. Laura will take to the stage on Saturday night and is over the moon to be performing at the event.

“I ’ m super excited to play this festival; I think Blackpool Winter Gardens is the most beautiful venue. I can ’ t wait to rock that big, beautiful stage and watch so many other amazing artists play!”

Getting To Know Laura Evans

Featured New Country & Americana Releases July 2022

Our Atlantic Roots Golden Hour

  • British label Magpie records release Shellyann’s country-rock song Roll The Dice.  The 2019 winner of BBC All Together Now gives a gutsy, powerful performance.
  • Singer-songwriter Hollie Rogers  is currently on the road with her Criminal Hearts tour. Hollie captures surviving long-distance relationships with her latest release Love and Distance. She shares song-writing  credits with Jamie Lawson and Robben Ford.
  • Golden Hour refers to the brief, but beautiful period of time after the sun dips below the horizon, but before it sets in earnest.  Our Atlantic Roots use this as a metaphor for love in the beautiful indie-folk song Golden Hour . A fleeting window of soft, incandescent light and harmonies.
  • British singer-songwriter and reality TV star Megan McKenna releases new song DNA . An up-tempo and uplifting country-pop song, she knows “how to cook up a storm”.
  • From their impressive EP, Heaven and Hell Robinson-Stone release The Storm . An intriguing timeless blend of Americana, and Celtic folk music with their sublime layered harmonies.

Fair Them Hills

We are continuing the country music July 2022 update. On the new music front, Stevie O’Connor kick-started the month. He released a video to accompany his song ‘Fair Them Hills’. Put together by Cottonbro, who did a great job of capturing the mood and aesthetics of the song.

Meanwhile, on July 20th, Danny McMahon announced that he would release a new single in August with a pre-save date of July 29th. His latest single, ‘Forget About That’, will be available on August 12th.

McMahon wasn’t the only one to announce a new single for next month. Celine Ellis also announced that she would release ‘Leave the Light On, which comes out on August 5th. Ellis will also be taking to the stage in Blackpool later this year, and again, she is thrilled.

Outside of festival performances, Emilia Quinn was announced as tour support for Jade Helliwell later this year when she embarks on her Woman I Am tour. Helliwell has revealed she has new music in the pipeline. The first single off her new record is available to pre-save now and comes out in early August.

If You Were Listening

The biggest news came from Motel Sundown. The Liverpool-based group known for their sublime harmonies, have released their debut album, ‘If You Were Listening’, followed by a successful album launch show at Jimmy’s. They also shared the news that they would be going on a mini tour throughout August and that they had been playlisted by Apple Music! They will also debut at the British Country Music Festival in September, and we can’t wait to hear some of these songs played live there!

Support Live Music

As August begins, please support the incredible artists who live and work in our scene.

We wish Gavin and Christine the best of luck for Millport Country Music Festival and Baylen and the Universal Music team for The Long Road. Both festivals have exciting line-ups.

We don’t know about you, but we can’t wait for the rest of summer! There’s so much to look forward to, and we’ll be covering it all in our August round-up and updating you on everything else happening on the UK country and Americana scene. Keep an eye out!

As for our festival, the excitement builds as we add the finishing touches on timings and organisation. We really feel that this is an incredible lineup of new, breaking and headline artists. Weekend and day tickets are available. So keep your eyes peeled.

‘An overnight sensation 11 years in the making’ … Lainey Wilson at the 2024 CMT music awards.

Country star Lainey Wilson on her long road to Grammy glory: ‘Maybe I wasn’t as crazy as people thought!’

After slogging through poverty, indifference and Hannah Montana impersonations, the US singer is an award-winning sensation and selling out a UK tour. She explains why her genre is going mainstream like never before

Y ou get the sense the country music establishment really had no choice but to embrace Lainey Wilson: that she wasn’t going anywhere until they did. When the singer-songwriter arrived in Nashville in 2011, she parked her 20-foot bumper pull trailer on a studio’s lawn and anchored it with rocks. Then 19, she had lived country music all her life. But Nashville is what they call a “10-year town”, rarely a place of instant hits and TikTok fame. Wilson had to do it the old-fashioned way: a decade of graft, rejection, false starts, handing out CDs in the streets, gigs, tours and playing to the same crowds over and over.

Gradually, things started to click (a publishing deal in 2017), then gather momentum (six No 1s on country radio since 2021), then snowball (a record-breaking nine nominations at the 2023 CMA awards, winning five), culminating in February when her 2022 album, Bell Bottom Country , won this year’s Grammy for country album of the year . Wilson is now one of the hottest properties in country music. An overnight sensation 11 years in the making, as she puts it. “It feels great,” says Wilson, 31, over video call, with her irresistible Louisiana twang, “because it makes me feel like maybe I wasn’t as crazy as a lot of people thought I was. Like, I told ya!”

Wilson’s music is rooted in traditional country, but draws heavily from a more mainstream Nashville sound, plus southern rock and pop. There’s also a big Dolly Parton influence – her song WWDD wonders What Would Dolly Do whenever life gets tough. Drawn to the genre’s strong tradition of storytelling, she favours poetic, introspective ballads about typical country staples of hard truths and heartbreak. But for all the tough earnestness she’s got a playful swagger, too, and not just in a clutch of catchy anthems – when we talk, Wilson has just returned to Nashville from touring Australia, where she surprised fans by chugging beer from a boot.

“I never thought somebody on literally the other side of the world would ever be able to relate to my story,” she says, lying on a lounger on her lawn, mildly distracted by her french bulldog Hippy Mae ( an Instagram star in her own right). A feathered cowboy hat shields her from the Tennessee sun. “But it just goes to show you that we’re all a lot more alike than you think and that’s really beautiful.”

The Europe leg of her international tour reaches the UK this week . “I don’t know any other way than hardcore touring,” she says. “I’ve basically been touring for the past 15 years. Even longer than that if you want to add in eighth grade [when] I started impersonating Hannah Montana. That was my job; I did three or four parties a weekend, and I would open up for myself.”

Her ascension comes at a time when country music is surging and broadening in popularity. We speak the day that Beyoncé released Cowboy Carter , while Lana Del Rey has promised a country album for later in the year, and in the UK it is strengthening its embrace – country (or country-ish) songs by Beyoncé, Dasha and Noah Kahan are all currently in the UK Top 10, and Chris Stapleton is selling out arenas for his autumn tour. Wilson acknowledged the genre’s buoyancy with recent single Country’s Cool Again . “I’m very proud to be a part of that moment,” says Wilson. “I truly think it has to do with folks wanting to feel warm and embraced. And I think country music can do that.” She thinks there are many reasons for the renaissance, notably: the fashion returning (cowboy hats, denim, Wilson’s signature bell-bottom jeans), the immensely popular TV show Yellowstone (Wilson had an acting role in the show’s fifth season last year), and, of course, pop artists “going country”.

Does it matter if you don’t have traditional country roots? “There’s no doubt that I’m southern, I’m country, I’m a redneck, I’m whatever you want to call it,” she says. “But I think it goes a lot deeper than that, ya know?”

Wilson poses with the Grammy for best country album at the 2024 ceremony.

Wilson was born in 1992 and raised in Baskin, Louisiana – a small town with a population in the hundreds. Her father is a farmer (“corn, wheat, soybeans, oats”) and her mother a teacher. Wilson was a very “emotional kid” and when she wasn’t helping out on the farm she was writing music. At nine, she wrote her first song and got her first paid gig: a family friend paid her $20 to sing a capella at the grand opening of his nearby convenience store. Her dad still has the $20 bill.

After that she dreamed only of Nashville. “And for some crazy reason my parents were like: ‘OK, we’ll help you do whatever you need to do.’ They had a weird sense of peace about it.”

That family friend, Jerry Cupit, was also a songwriter and producer who moved to Nashville and set up a studio with financial help from Wilson’s grandfather. When Wilson was ready to move there, he let her park her trailer on his studio lawn, 10 miles out of town. More importantly, he became her mentor. “He didn’t ask me to pay a dime because of what my grandfather had done for him generations before,” says Wilson. “I was bumming water and wi-fi and electricity.”

It wasn’t without its dangers though. “My TV wouldn’t work at times. And so I never really knew what weather was coming in. All of a sudden my camper trailer would start to rock back and forth. And then tornado sirens were going off. It was scary.”

Nashville was not what she expected. “I was so overwhelmed,” she says, “A fish out of water.”

Then Cupit died. “I had to start over. I wasn’t old enough to go to the bars, and those were the places that you could go to meet people in the industry. So I started just knocking on doors and handing them my CD. I didn’t know what else to do.”

Performing at the iHeartRadio Music awards in April.

Her eventual breakthrough with that publishing deal came as a result of her finally finding the right collaborators. “For a long time I was running into folks [who were] thinking that maybe if I was just a little bit different than who I am, that would work. I just have a hard time being anything other than myself,” she says.

But part of the delay Wilson experienced is arguably down to the country music establishment’s attitude towards female artists: occasional breakout stars such as Kacey Musgraves, Carrie Underwood and of course Taylor Swift are relatively rare between the men singing about women, trucks and beer. It is, she says, “100%” harder for female country artists to break through. “But the way that I was raised, I keep my head down. It’s a hard pill to swallow. But I’m gonna outwork everybody, I’m gonna roll my sleeves up and damn it, I’m gonna figure out how to do it.

“It’s a boys’ club, but I tell all of my guy artist friends all the time: us girls are coming for ya so you better watch out.”

As for her take on the widening schisms in the genre – “The Culture Wars Are Tearing the Close-Knit Country Music Community Apart” ran a Rolling Stone headline last year – Wilson laments: “I hate that that is happening in country music. I’ve got friends on both sides of the fence. I just see people for people, and you just choose to love them and you know, the way that God loves you. But if you believe something with all your heart, and you want to stand up for it, I’m good with that, too.”

Wilson returns again to the idea that country music is open to all. “If you don’t step outside of the bubble then you’re not going to learn a lot about different types of people,” she says. “And the truth is, we all put our pants on the same way, one leg at a time, and we all bleed red. It just takes so many different kinds of people to make the world go round.”

Fairground Attraction

This year is already promised to be a great one for live music in the UK after a string of pop and rock icons announced huge shows . And a nostalgic 1980s pop group are about to join them all on the road.

Fairground Attraction, who hit the big time with their debut single Perfect in 1988, have announced that all four original members are reuniting for a tour and a brand new album.

The 14-date tour will begin in Wolverhampton in September, finishing up in Edinburgh three weeks later. An album is expected later this year and will mark the band’s first release since their split back in 1990.

And as if that wasn’t enough, a string of huge music icons from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s have announced a run of gigs in the UK over the summer and autumn periods.

Let’s have a look at who’s gracing UK stages in the next few months.

It was back in 1988 that the band went to the very top of the pop charts with their debut single Perfect, which was eventually certified silver in the UK after selling over 250,000 copies.

Australia concerts in 2024: here’s a list of shows and tours coming up

Big names confirmed for tours Down Under in 2024 include Coldplay, Pink, SZA, Hozier, Iron Maiden and more

Fresh out of a pandemic, Australia’s 2023 touring calendar was one of the busiest in recent memory, as artists of all stripes took centrestage everywhere from stadium shows to intimate local gigs. With a starry schedule that included the likes of Post Malone , Red Hot Chili Peppers , and Mötley Crüe , it’ll be tricky for 2024’s schedule to outdo its predecessor – and yet, thanks to the likes of Taylor Swift , Blink-182 and Pink , plus Coldplay, Pearl Jam and SZA later in the year, it’s poised to do just that.

From debut headline shows for breakout artists to bustling festival sideshow programs, there’s something for everyone to enjoy as a stellar batch of musicians make their way Down Under in 2024. Read on for NME’s roundup of all the biggest concerts and tours coming to Australia this year.

Here are the concerts and tours coming to Australia in 2024:

Pink When: February 9 – March 23 Find tickets and more info

Australia bloody loves Pink , and she’s apparently pretty fond of her “home away from home” too. In 2009, she played 58 shows here as part of her Funhouse tour, performing for some 660,000 fans. In 2013, when she announced an Australian tour in support of sixth studio album ‘The Truth About Love’, 320,000 tickets were snapped up within a few hours of them going on sale.

It makes sense, then, that the American singer-songwriter has a slew of dates booked for her return in February and March 2024 as part of her Summer Carnival world tour . She’ll be bringing songs from her ninth studio album ‘Trustfall’ to stadiums around the country, including stops in Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

She’ll be playing a total of four shows at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium and conclude the tour at Townsville’s Queensland Country Bank stadium.
