Paris-Tours 2023 overview

First raced in 1896, Paris-Tours is one of the oldest and longest-running races in cycling, and this year will take place on October 8. Set between the outskirts of the French capital and Tours a few hundred kilometres south, the race is known for its over length of over 200km and is one of the most prestigious one-day Classics of the autumn. In recent years, the organisers ASO have incorporated off-road sectors into the race’s route, but it remains something of a sprinters’ Classic thanks to its flat and fast finish into Tours.

While the race’s early history is dominated by French and Belgian names, through the second half of the last century many of the biggest names in cycling won Paris-Tours: Rik Van Looy, Joop Zoetemelk and Sean Kelly all feature on its roll of honour. In recent years, it’s been strong, Classics-type sprinters who have won in Tours, including John Degenkolb , Matteo Trentin and, in the last two editions, Arnaud Démare .

This year, Démare lines up to try to become the first rider to win Paris-Tour three years in a row, but he’ll have the likes of Arnaud De Lie , Christophe Laporte and Kaden Groves to contend with as a stacked group of sprinters head to France. It’s also going to be an important day for Greg Van Avermaet , winner here in 2011, as Sunday will be his final race day as a professional before he heads into retirement.

Paris-Tours 2023 route

Starting in Chartres, just outside Paris, the route for Paris-Tours heads south from the outskirts of the capital towards Tours for a total of 214km of racing. The route has changed a lot over the race’s history, and the current iteration has been in place since 2018, when a radical change was made: the introduction of 10 off-road ‘vineyard’ sections in the run-in to Tours.

The first 140km of the race is largely flat bar a few uncategorised rises, and all the action is packed into the final 80km. This last section of the race will see the peloton take on the 10 unpaved track sectors towards Tours, as well as eight short but sharp climbs, that give the end of the race a real Classics-style feel. The final climb comes 15km from the finish, and it’s then a pan-flat run-in to the finish line, so although the climbs and gravel can make for a tricky finale, it tends to come back together for a bunch sprint in Tours.

Here's the race organizer's Paris-Tours report: A crazy race, a completely undecided scenario in the hot dust of the vineyard paths, and a completely new winner: it's Riley Sheehan, a trainee with Israel-Premier Tech, who won this 117th Paris-Tours after a very close sprint against his four breakaway companions. It's the first victory for the 23-year-old American. A major first, too, for the United States, which had never won on Avenue de Grammont. The heroic Lewis Askey (Groupama – FDJ) who led all day, took second place ahead of Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno X).

The race: 157 riders set off in the shadow of the imposing Chartres Cathedral, bathed in bright sunlight, for the 117th edition of Paris-Tours. It was an emotional start for several riders, including Greg Van Avermaet (AG2R Citroën) and Tony Gallopin (Lidl-Trek), who pinned on their race numbers for the last time in their careers. After covering more than thirty kilometers at high speed, a group of five riders finally broke away: Lewis Askey (Groupama FDJ), Théo Delacroix (Intermarché Circus Wanty), Joseph Rosskopf (Q36.5), Maxime Jarnet (Van Rysel – Roubaix Lille Metropole), and Axel Narbonne Zuccarelli (Nice Metropole Côte d'Azur). The gap never reached extravagant proportions before the first challenges of the day.

Arnaud De Lie eliminated due to a mechanical issue The Jumbo-Visma team of Christophe Laporte, the Lotto Dstny team of Arnaud De Lie and the Bora-Hansgrohe team of Jordi Meeus were controlling the offensive before entering the first vineyard path, Limeray, at 67.1 kilometers from the finish. In the ninth sector, the Lotto Dstny leader suffered a puncture, as did Jordi Meeus, who got caught in a crash. The peloton fragmented completely, marked by multiple attacks and punctures. In the dust, European champion Christophe Laporte, Greg Van Avermaet, Magnus Cort Nielsen, or Jasper Stuyven, to name a few, lost precious energy trying to get back into contention after mechanical problems. Arnaud De Lie, on the other hand, faced numerous setbacks, leaving his hopes in the dust.

Heroic performance by Lewis Askey In front, the impressive Lewis Askey, only twenty-two years old, put up a strong resistance as the moves kept coming. Biniam Girmay (Intermarché – Circus Wanty) tried, as did Matteo Trentin (UAE) and John Degenkolb (DSM-Firmenich). There was no letup. The British rider was finally caught on the last difficulty of the day, the Rochecobron climb, by a group of four riders who had broken away about twenty kilometers from the finish: Olivier Le Gac (Groupama FDJ), Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno X), Riley Sheehan (Israel) and Joris Delbove (St Michel). Behind them, the Arkea Samsic team of the top favorite Arnaud Démare made the effort to close the gap before the famous Avenue de Grammont.

A first victory for the United States However, their efforts were in vain as the breakaway group contested the victory in the shade of the plane trees. It was the American Riley Sheehan, only twenty-three years old and a trainee with Israel – Premier Tech, who proved to be the strongest at the end of an extremely close sprint.

Paris-Tours Elite 2023 : Parcours et favoris

C'est la 117e édition de Paris-Tours Elite dimanche 8 octobre 2023. Autrefois classique de référence dans le monde du cyclisme, la "classique des feuilles mortes" s'est réinventée avec ses - maintenant célèbres - chemins de vigne. Présentation d'une course chargée en histoire.

L'histoire de Paris-Tours :

Peu de courses ont un tel passé. Créée en 1896, elle est l'une des plus anciennes classiques du circuit UCI. Elle est d'ailleurs la deuxième course la plus courue dans l'histoire, derrière Paris-Roubaix et à égalité avec le Tour de Lombardie (115 éditions), couru la veille et qui partage le nom de "classique des feuilles mortes". Si la course fut créée au 19e XIXe, elle ne fut réservée aux professionnels qu'à partir de 1907, date à laquelle est devint une course annuelle. A cette époque, elle était organisée par L'Auto , lui-même créateur du Tour de France. Si le tracé a été modifié à plusieurs reprises, le profil de la région a toujours favorisé les sprinteurs, même si par le passé, les spécialités n'avaient rien à voir avec le cyclisme actuel.

La course est nommée "Paris-Tours Elite" en raison de la présence de "Paris-Tours Espoir".

Contrairement à beaucoup de classiques aussi anciennes, ce ne sont pas les coureurs locaux (France) qui ont inscrit le plus souvent leur nom au palmarès, mais les Belges. C'est d'ailleurs eux aussi qui co-détiennent le record de victoires. Récemment, Erik Zabel a fait de cette course une habitude et partage le record de 3 succès avec Paul Maye et Gustave Danneels, deux coureurs des années 1930. Ces dernières années, la course plaît aux Danois, qui sont venus inscrire leur nom au palmarès pour la première fois, à deux reprises. Le double tenant du titre est lui français puisqu'il s'agit d'Arnaud Demare, qui sera d'ailleurs l'un des favoris à sa propre succession.

Le profil/ parcours de Paris-Tour 2023 :

Jadis destiné aux sprinteurs, Paris-Tours a dû se réinventer pour reprendre une place plus importante dans le calendrier professionnel. Tombée un peu dans l'oubli, l'organisation a choisi d'emprunter en 2018 des chemins de vignes, changeant ainsi drastiquement l'orientation de la course, beaucoup plus animée.

La 117e édition de Paris-Tours se disputera le 8 octobre prochain au départ de Chartres, sur une distance totale de 213,9 kilomètres et un itinéraire inchangé comprenant dix chemins de vignes, soit 10 km hors des routes asphaltées !

L'actuel parcours favorise donc les coureurs de classiques et incite aux mouvements de courses, et ce dès les 70 derniers kilomètres, à partir de la côte de Limeray, qui précède immédiatement la première portion non asphaltée. Huit côtes au total, accompagnées de dix « chemins blancs », pourront servir de tremplins pour les mouvements de contre-attaque.

La course devrait se décanter à partir du kilomètre 161 et l'arrivée dans les chemins de vignes. La côte de la Vallée du Vau ne sera pas forcément décisive mais c'est là que les premières offensives sérieuses devraient se déclencher. La Côte de la Vallée Chartier devrait elle être décisive. Si un homme seul ne gagne que rarement, un petit groupe est attendu sur l'avenue de Gramont. L'an dernier, Arnaud Démare s'est imposé en patron pour signer un joli succès consécutif. L'édition 2023 lui fera-t-elle tripler la mise ? Rappelons aussi que la course jouera un grand rôle dans la course au maintien et que certaines équipes jouent gros et chercheront sans doute à tout miser sur le sprint.

Nous misons donc sur un sprint d'un groupe d'environ 20 coureurs.
