Cool Cruiser

Has anyone tried the 20 day cruise from Miami to Seattle?  It really appeals to me. I cant make it this year but hoping it will still be running next year.  There are about 7 sea days on it, with a 4 day stretch at the end.

I notice there are a few different itineraries for this route.  One has the sea days more spread out and I notice it stops in LA and also San Francisco before going on to Seattle.  Is it possible to get off in LA?

When I did it many years a ago, I booked it as TWO cruises: Miami to Los Angeles and Los Angeles to Vancouver British, Columbia.  The cruise between Vancouver, British Columbia to Seattle is CREW only.  Very old law involved called the Passenger Vessel Services Act (1886).  It was great fun and would love to do again.

I am on the Sun next month for this exact itinerary.  I am 99% I won't be doing "Live From...", but I'll be happy to share my experiences as time allows.

I see the Encore has several itineraries listed as embarking on April 7, 2024 - 21 day, 18 day, 15 day.  I'm guessing this is the ship you're looking at?  If you want to get off in LA book the 15 day that ends there.

Wonder why the itinerary is Central America heavy but excludes any U.S. West Coast stops? A San Diego or San Fran day woulda been nice…

We were on the Sun in October 2022 that sailed from Seattle to Miami (and then b2b on to Lisbon). A great trip, it went to smaller ports such as Astoria and Catalina Island on the west coast, before a more traditional set of ports in Mexico and Central America.

In April 2022 we were on a b2b2b on the Encore, a week in the Caribbean, then 21 days Miami to Seattle, and a week in Alaska.  This one was sold with three different options, you could get off in Los Angeles, or San Francisco, or Seattle.  It wasn't super busy to start, then people got off in LA and SF, so only 800 or so passengers for the final SF to Seattle leg!

These Caribbean to Alaska (or return) repositions are great - plenty of sea days to relax, generally good weather, and often a very affordable price per day (since not many people can do long cruises).  We love them!  Try to add a b2b at either or both ends if you have the time.

If you're on the Encore, Bliss or Joy it'll sail through the new locks on the Panama canal.  The older more historic locks are used for the smaller ships like the Sun.

Did the ‘new’ Canal on the Canal inauguration sailing of the Bliss. Frank Del Rio graced the occasion with a visit to the ship at one of the Locks.

BTW, you mention ‘Down Under’. If that’s your home country, gotta tell ya that we want the Ashes back.

Cruises from Miami

Miami is famous for its glamorous beaches, Art Deco architecture, and lively Latino heritage. But did you know this city also boasts one of America’s most crowded cruise ports? With millions of passengers per year, PortMiami is an unavoidable mecca in the global cruise industry.

If you’re considering a cruise out of PortMiami, then you should read through this quick guide. After explaining how to reach this port, we’ll share a few expert tips on how to make the most of your free time in Miami.

Where is PortMiami?

PortMiami is just north of the city’s Downtown district and about seven miles west of Miami Beach. Miami International Airport (IATA: MIA) is only a ten-mile drive to PortMiami.

Those who are driving from MIA to PortMiami should get on FL-836 E and then follow the Port Miami Tunnel. Without traffic, you should arrive at the port within less than 20 minutes.

What’s the best way to get to PortMiami?

The three most accessible ways to get from MIA to PortMiami include taxis, ride-share vehicles, and shuttles. Typically, it costs about $25 to hire either a taxi or a ride-share vehicle. Shuttles, on the other hand, usually charge $17 per person.

Of course, there is also the option of renting a car in Miami. Just remember that you will have to pay a parking fee at one of PortMiami’s garages. The parking rate for standard cars is now set at $22, but these fees are a few dollars higher if you park in Royal Caribbean’s Terminal A Garage.

FYI: some Miami-area hotels offer exclusive transportation deals to PortMiami. If you're staying in Miami before your cruise departs, please check with your hotel for more details.

Popular cruises from PortMiami

Considering PortMiami's location, it's no surprise most cruises travel to the Caribbean, especially the Bahamas. In addition to the famous port in Nassau, you could find plenty of cruises that stop in San Juan, Grand Turk, Labadie, and Amber Cove. A few other ports that are sometimes featured on Miami cruises include Montego Bay, Cozumel, and Key West.

Things to do in Miami before your cruise

Whether you’re into beautiful beaches of bright city lights, you’ll find plenty to entertain yourself in Miami. Spend time soaking some sun on South Beach and admiring the nearby Art Deco architecture. Once you’re done exploring Miami’s iconic sites, let out your inner “shop-a-holic” at the Bayside Marketplace and the Dolphin Mall.

Parents traveling to Miami will also find plenty of kid-friendly attractions throughout the city. Your children will undoubtedly enjoy a trip to Zoo Miami, the Miami Seaquarium, the Miami Science Center, or Jungle Island before your cruise departs.

Even if you only have a few hours to spare, there are still many things to do near PortMiami. Take a look at these exceptional attractions close to Miami's cruise terminals:

  • Feed a few flamingos on Jungle Island.
  • Take a walk through the 32-acre Bayfront Park.
  • Shop til you drop in the Bayside Market.
  • Journey to the stars in the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science.
  • Reflect on Miami's Cuban heritage at the Freedom Tower.

What are the best hotels near PortMiami?

As Florida’s second-largest city, Miami has a wide range of hotels to choose from. If you’re having a difficult time choosing a place to stay, you should take a peek at one of these highly-reviewed hotels.

For obvious reasons, most tourists in Miami want to stay close to the city’s gorgeous beach. Thankfully, Fairwind Hotel offers an affordable two-star experience well within walking distance of the world-famous beach. Take a few moments to check out Fairwind Hotel’s rooms if you want to stay close to Miami Beach.

Alternatively, tourists who want a solid three-star hotel should research the Sheraton Miami Airport Hotel. Located directly across from the Melreese Country Club, this Sheraton offers many luxurious features, including marble bathrooms, an indoor pool, and two tantalizing restaurants.

Where can I cruise without a passport?

At TPG, we always recommend cruising with a passport, but there are many reasons why you might want to set sail without one.

What if an opportunity pops up on short notice, and you don't have a passport yet? Or what if you forgot to renew yours when it expired? What if it's only a three-night cruise to the Bahamas, and the passport application fee is almost as much as the cruise fare? Or, maybe you have children nearing age 16 and can't justify paying for passports that will only be good for five years.

First of all, do you even need a passport to cruise ? The answer is often but not always. You have options to cruise without a passport because not every sailing requires them. Thanks to an international agreement called the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative , U.S. citizens can cruise on certain itineraries within North American countries using government-issued identification (like a valid driver's license) and proof of citizenship (like a government-issued birth certificate).

The cruises that you don't need a passport for are closed-loop sailings, which depart from and return to the same port within the U.S. One-way sailings from one U.S. port to another or from a U.S. port to a foreign one would require a passport.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Before we go further, let's clarify that when we talk about cruising without a passport, we're referring to pricey passport books that some travelers do not wish to purchase. Passport cards can also be used for identification when cruising in all the places we are about to discuss; these cards are a low-cost alternative to traveling with your driver's license and birth certificate.

Let's look at the options for where you can cruise without a passport.

Cruising to Alaska is one of the easiest ways to experience all the state offers. You'll have opportunities to see glaciers and wildlife; stroll the streets of charming coastal towns; eat your fill of local crab legs and salmon; and enjoy nature on a kayak, zip line or hike.

If you're interested in cruising to Alaska without a passport, look for itineraries that begin (and end) in Seattle , San Francisco or southern California ports, such as Los Angeles or Long Beach, California. The most common length for these closed-loop Alaska cruises operated by the major cruise lines is seven nights. Cruises early or late in the season might be only four or five nights, and trips departing from LA are usually 14 nights.

What if you really want to cruise one-way from Canada to Alaska (or vice versa)? Although Canada prefers U.S. citizens who arrive by sea or land to have a passport book, it is not required as long as they have proper identification and proof of citizenship. The U.S., however, requires one of the following WHTI-approved forms of identification for entries by land or sea: passport card, enhanced driver's license, I-872 American Indian card or trusted traveler program IDs like Nexus, Sentri and Fast.

Technically, if you have one of those forms of ID but not a passport book, you can take a one-way Alaska cruise — as long as you don't have to fly to or from Canada.

More complications arise for non-passport holders who book shore excursions that involve crossing from Alaska to Canada. White Pass and Yukon Route train rides are good examples. White Pass and Yukon Route allows cruise passengers to go on the three-hour train excursion without a passport but doesn't allow them to take any longer routes. That's their policy, not a legal requirement.

This means that Alaska cruises are one instance when the passport card would be a handy alternative to traveling with both an ID card and a birth certificate. It opens up one-way itineraries.

A cruise to the Caribbean transports you to tropical islands bathed in turquoise waters. Whether you seek warm beaches, cool drinks, water sports or cultural education, you can find a Caribbean cruise to fit the bill.

It's easy to cruise without a passport in the Caribbean: Just book one of the many closed-loop, round-trip sailings departing from a U.S. port. Most major cruise lines offer sailings that range between three and 15 nights from ports like Galveston, Texas; New Orleans; multiple ports in Florida (including Miami and Fort Lauderdale); Charleston, South Carolina; Baltimore; Bayonne, New Jersey; and New York City.

Most Caribbean islands participate in the WHTI, but it's always best to check the details specific to the ports of call included in your itinerary. Don't forget that islands such as Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix are U.S. territories, so visits never require passports for U.S. citizens.

Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory, lying 643 miles off the coast of North Carolina. Hop on a cruise ship for a direct route to the island's famous beaches and golf courses. Spring and summer are the prime seasons to visit, but cruises are possible throughout the year.

Cruising without a passport to Bermuda is also easy. Apart from a few isolated cruises stopping in Bermuda as they come or go from other destinations, there are no one-way Bermuda cruises to confuse the situation. If you plan to sail without a passport, be wary of any Bermuda cruise longer than 10 nights. Those are likely to be point-to-point cruises that happen to include Bermuda.

Passport-free cruises to Bermuda include ample five- to 10-night sailings from the East Coast ports of Baltimore, Bayonne, Boston and Manhattan. Occasional itineraries also pop up throughout the Bermuda season departing from Norfolk, Virginia; Charleston; and the Florida ports of Miami, Port Canaveral (near Orlando) and Jacksonville.

Long known for delightful strands of beach and access to every imaginable form of water fun under the subtropical sun, the Bahamas are the ideal destination for easy and quick cruise vacations.

Skip the passport on three- to five-night Bahamas cruises sailing round-trip on most major cruise lines from the eastern Florida ports of Jacksonville, Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades and Miami.

A few longer, seven- to 15-night itineraries stop in the Bahamas on their way into the Caribbean. Departures from Bayonne, Manhattan, Baltimore and Charleston will often get you weeklong Bahamas itineraries, as will sailings from Tampa, Galveston and New Orleans.

Our southern neighbor boasts two coastlines of cruise fun. Like most tropical cruise destinations, the top draws are the beaches and the ocean; however, cruise ports in Mexico also give you access to ancient Mayan ruins, delicious cuisine and an abundance of land activities.

Mexico's Caribbean and Pacific coasts are both accessible to cruisers who do not hold passports. If you want to visit Mexico's eastern shores, you can find three- to 15-night cruises to Costa Maya, Cozumel and Progreso. Sailings depart Florida from Miami, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral; you can also find itineraries from New Orleans, Galveston and Mobile, Alabama.

Western Mexico, often referred to as the Mexican Riviera, includes the ports of Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Ensenada, among others. Cruises with several major lines depart San Diego, San Pedro port in LA and Long Beach for voyages lasting anywhere from three to 10 nights.

From water sports to American history and Hawaiian culture, there's a lot to experience on a Hawaii cruise . The best part might be the ability to hop from island to island, sampling the flavors of each as you go.

Closed-loop Hawaii cruises that don't require passports come in two varieties. The short option is to fly to Honolulu and take a seven- or 10-night cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line 's Pride of America. This is the only large cruise ship allowed to operate entirely within the Hawaiian Islands without visiting a foreign port.

Small-ship cruise operator UnCruise Adventures also offers seven-night, inter-island Hawaiian sailings. The American-flagged ships only cruise to and from U.S. ports, so no passport is needed, as would be the case on any domestic trip.

The long-cruise options consist of 14- to 18-night round-trip sailings from San Diego, LA (Long Beach and San Pedro) and San Francisco. You won't need a passport for these closed-loop sailings, but you do need to be prepared for multiple days at sea as you cross the Pacific from California to Hawaii.

Beware of 20-plus-night cruises that are round-trip sailings from the West Coast and would seem to fit the bill for closed-loop cruises that don't require passports. Most of these cruises don't work because they also include stops in French Polynesia, which is outside of the WHTI agreement. Passports are required for the islands in the South Pacific, which means they're required for the entire cruise.

Canada and New England

Cruises up North America's East Coast allow you to take in historical sights of early Americana, stand atop rugged cliffs on the coast of Nova Scotia or revel in the French culture of Quebec.

Mainstream cruise lines operate numerous cruises along the U.S. and Canadian coasts that don't require passports. These depart from the ports of Bayonne, Baltimore, Boston, Manhattan, Brooklyn and occasionally Norfolk. The majority of these New England and Canada cruises are weeklong fall sailings; however, a handful depart at other times of the year or are a touch longer, ranging from eight to 10 nights.

Related: The best cruises to Canada and New England

Some cruise lines also offer one-way cruises in both directions between Canada and New England. These itineraries, like Alaska cruises, might be possible without a passport book. This is the case as long as your plans don't include flying into or out of Canada and your cruise line allows you to cruise with either a passport card or other acceptable form of identification and proof of citizenship.

We checked with a few lines for you. Princess, Holland America and Celebrity all strongly recommend passport books, but they allow one of the WHTI forms of identification. Again, the passport card opens up one-way possibilities, assuming you aren't flying and your cruise only includes Canada and the U.S.

Bottom line

While cruising with a passport is always recommended, it's not required by law in certain circumstances. Closed-loop cruises from U.S. ports that visit Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico are part of an international agreement that allows U.S. citizens to cruise without a passport. In these cases, government-issued identification and proof of U.S. citizenship are acceptable alternatives to a passport book.

Passport cards are an affordable and unquestionable alternative to carrying an ID and birth certificate. If you want to go this route, know they are not valid for travel by air into or out of any foreign country, including Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or Caribbean countries — which is the primary reason most travel advisers urge cruisers to have a passport book.

As we've shown, you have plenty of options for where to cruise without a passport, and many travelers do so without incident. However, anything from engine trouble on your cruise ship to bad weather or an accident in port might necessitate a flight home from a foreign country. This would put you in an awkward position if you didn't have a passport.

Plus, as much fun as simple round-trip cruises are, passports open up additional vacation possibilities in the form of longer, point-to-point and overseas trips. Don't dismiss registering for a passport, even as you consider where you can cruise without one.

Round 4, No. 121: Seahawks draft Michigan TE AJ Barner

The Seattle Seahawks selected Michigan tight end AJ Barner with the 121st pick.

The Athletic NFL Draft analyst Dane Brugler on Barner: A one-year starter at Michigan, Barner was a versatile tight end in offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore’s pro-style scheme (60.0 percent inline, 24.8 percent slot and 15.2 percent wide).

Lightly recruited out of high school (mostly as a defensive player), he wasn’t a high-volume pass catcher in college (had fewer than 30 receiving yards in 14 of 15 games in 2023), but it feels like there is more meat on that bone.

With his acceleration into his routes, Barner can poke holes in zones and appears comfortable catching the ball outside his frame (see 2023 Michigan State tape).

As a blocker, he lacks desired mass and sustain strength, but he creates a surge at the point of attack and shows the balance to be an effective backside puller.

Overall, Barner is lighter than ideal to be an every-down Y tight end and doesn’t have the resume of a playmaking receiver, but he is a solid athlete with pass-catching upside and the play personality to handle run-blocking duties. He can provide depth on an NFL roster as a flex tight end.

The Dolphins are using that third-round pick they just acquired for – surprise – another explosive running back. The team is obviously listening to coach Mike McDaniel.

Jaylen Wright is the selection for the Dolphins here. He averaged 7.4 yards per attempt last season and had 1,013 yards.

Round 4, No. 120: Dolphins draft Tennessee RB Jaylen Wright

Round 4, No. 120: Dolphins draft Tennessee RB Jaylen Wright

(Photo: Stacy Revere / Getty Images)

The Miami Dolphins selected Tennessee running back Jaylen Wright with the 120th pick after trading a 2025 third-rounder to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Athletic NFL Draft analyst Dane Brugler on Wright: A one-year starter, Wright was the lead back in head coach Josh Heupel’s version of the Air Raid spread scheme. He led the Volunteers in rushing each of the last two seasons and finished No. 1 among all FBS running backs in yards per carry in 2023 (7.39).

Wright, who formerly was roommates with speedster wide receiver Jalin Hyatt, is a good-sized back with the foot quickness and speed bursts that leads to explosive plays (25.74 percent of his carries in 2023 went for 10-plus yards, No. 1 in the FBS).

Though his pace and patience must improve for more controlled runs, he showed a lot of promise with his receiving skills and pass-pro reps on his 2023 film.

Overall, Wright needs to develop a better feel for using tempo to maximize what is there, but his run strength, balance and ability to cut/weave at top speed make him dangerous with the ball in his hands.

He projects as a scheme-versatile back (stylistically similar to Jerome Ford) who can handle work on all three downs.

Matt Schneidman

New Packers safety Evan Williams' dad was on the kickoff return team for Cal during the "band is in the field" game against Stanford in 1982.

Williams said he re-watches the play once or twice a month and was proud growing up that his dad was part of such an iconic play.

The Dolphins trading a 2025 third-round pick to move into the 120th slot here makes sense for a team with some immediate needs. Miami is in line to receive two third-round compensatory picks in 2025 for losing defensive tackle Christian Wilkins and guard Robert Hunt to megadeals in free agency this offseason.

Round 4, No. 119: Steelers draft South Dakota State G Mason McCormick

Round 4, No. 119: Steelers draft South Dakota State G Mason McCormick

(Photo: Justin Casterline / Getty Images)

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected South Dakota State guard Mason McCormick with the 119th pick.

The Athletic NFL Draft analyst Dane Brugler on McCormick: A four-year starter at South Dakota State, McCormick was entrenched at left guard in former offensive coordinator Zach Lujan’s balanced gap/zone scheme (also the backup center on the depth chart).

After receiving mostly free-agent grades from NFL scouts, he returned for his sixth season in 2023 and turned himself into a draftable player, as he led the Jackrabbits to the second of back-to-back FCS championships.

In pass protection, McCormick needs to improve his hand placement and reaction skills, but he plays with quick feet and is advanced mentally to recognize blocking pressures. Despite his body stiffness showing up out in space, he has a tractor beam to defenders as a puller and looks like a fullback with the impolite way he looks to embarrass and bury opponents.

Overall, McCormick doesn’t consistently play up to his testing numbers, but he has good eyes and feet in pass protection and outstanding physicality in the run game.

He projects as a Day 1 backup (at all three interior line positions) who can become a starter with more coaching.

Nick Baumgardner

Bortolini's fit with Colts could be awesome

The Tanor Bortolini fit with Indianapolis is pretty fascinating and could be awesome. When Shane Steichen was in Philadelphia he helped the Eagles build a unique offense around Hall of Fame center Jason Kelce.

Bortolini –– a three-year starter at Wisconsin who has guard/center experience –– broke Kelce's three-cone record for an IOL at the combine (7.16). This could be pretty great for Indy.

Where will T.J. Tampa land?

It's surprising to see Iowa State cornerback T.J. Tampa still available this late in the draft. He did not run well in testing, but doesn't seem to have any known red flags.

His play speed wasn't considered a problem. It'll be very interesting to see if he defies his depressed draft standing.

Round 4, No. 118: Seahawks draft UTEP LB Tyrice Knight

Round 4, No. 118: Seahawks draft UTEP LB Tyrice Knight

(Photo: Trevor Ruszkowski / USA Today)

The Seattle Seahawks selected UTEP linebacker Tyrice Knight with the 118th pick.

The Athletic NFL Draft analyst Dane Brugler on Knight: A three-year starter at UTEP, Knight moved inside to Mike linebacker in 2023 in defensive coordinator Bradley Dale Peveto’s 4-2-5 base scheme.

After two years at the juco level, he was a tackling machine over his four seasons in El Paso and finished No. 1 in the FBS in solo tackles (84) and No. 4 in total tackles per game (11.7) as a senior in 2023.

For a player with average speed, Knight makes a lot of tackles both inside and outside the numbers because of his reaction quickness, closing burst and motor (his model didn’t come with cruise control).

Trusting his eyes, he triggers without wasting steps and attacks with purpose (15.5 tackles for loss in 2023), but his lack of functional take-on skills will be tougher to mask versus NFL talent.

Overall, Knight has some coverage limitations, but he is a rabid dog against the run, with the instincts and play personality that directly led to production. He has rosterable talent at the next level and is looking to become UTEP’s first defensive draft pick since 2008 (Quintin Demps).

Round 4, No. 117: Colts draft Wisconsin C Tanor Bortolini

Round 4, No. 117: Colts draft Wisconsin C Tanor Bortolini

(Photo: Mike De Sisti / The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel / USA Today Network)

The Indianapolis Colts selected Wisconsin center Tanor Bortolini with the 117th pick.

The Athletic NFL Draft analyst Dane Brugler on Bortolini : A three-year starter at Wisconsin, Bortolini (and his Joe Tippman-inspired mullet) played center this past season in offensive coordinator Phil Longo’s multiple run scheme.

After filling in at tackle, guard and center his first few seasons in Madison, he expected a return to guard in 2023, but an injury pushed him inside to center, where he anchored a Badgers’ offensive line that had the same starting five for all 12 regular-season games.

Bortolini, who broke Jason Kelce’s combine record with the best three-cone (7.16 seconds) among interior linemen, might have the best combination of athleticism and smarts in this draft class.

He lacks ideal length to create separation and is guilty of excessive forward lean into contact, but he will strain to finish cutoffs and eventually settle versus power rushers.

Overall, Bortolini had persistent hiccups on his 2023 tape, but the guard-to-center transition is rarely immediate, and he offers encouraging upside, thanks to his fluidity, intelligence and technical skill.

He projects as an eventual NFL starter with position flexibility across the interior.

Round 4, No. 116: Jaguars draft LSU DT Jordan Jefferson

Round 4, No. 116: Jaguars draft LSU DT Jordan Jefferson

The Jacksonville Jaguars selected LSU defensive tackle Jordan Jefferson with the 116th pick.

The Athletic NFL Draft analyst Dane Brugler on Jefferson: A one-year starter at LSU, Jefferson was an interchangeable defensive tackle in former defensive coordinator Matt House’s even fronts.

After four seasons at West Virginia, he transferred to Baton Rouge for the 2023 season and finished second on the team in tackles for loss (7.0), despite ranking 10th on the team in defensive snaps played (his role increased over the second half of the season after Mekhi Wingo was injured).

Jefferson is at his best as a one-gapper, where he can recognize pre-snap movement and use his initial quickness to gain the upper hand. Though he has desired length, he doesn’t always use it to his advantage and lacks ideal body flexibility and contract balance once engaged, which also limits his tackling range.

Overall, Jefferson needs to develop his technical efficiency to be more disruptive, but his burst off the ball and upper-body strength can give him an early advantage into battle.

He projects as a rotational lineman on the interior who still has some upside left.

You can rarely go wrong with Iowa tight ends.

The big question with All will be health. Underwent "life-changing spinal surgery," in 2022, according to Dane Brugler. Then tore his ACL last season.

But yes, if healthy, he looks the part.

Round 4, No. 115: Bengals draft Iowa TE Erick All Jr.

The Cincinnati Bengals selected Iowa tight end Erick All Jr. with the 115th pick.

The Athletic NFL Draft analyst Dane Brugler on All: A one-year starter at Iowa, All was a “move” tight end in former offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz’s pro-style spread scheme (56.2 percent of his snaps in the slot, 41.3 percent inline). After four years in Ann Arbor, he needed a fresh start following his 2022 back injury.

He then led Iowa in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns in 2023, despite missing the final seven games (ACL tear).

A promising pass catcher, All shows athletic movements up and down the field with natural tracking skills, although he needs to cut back on focus drops. Though he is more strong than powerful, All is competent as a blocker with his ability to locate and hook defenders from the backfield or wing.

Overall, All needs to continue developing his consistency, but he is solid across the board with his athletic receiving traits and willingness as a blocker.

If healthy (a big “if”), he projects as a No. 2 tight end on an NFL depth chart, as an F tight end or H-back.

Round 4, No. 114: Jaguars draft Missouri OT Javon Foster

Round 4, No. 114: Jaguars draft Missouri OT Javon Foster

The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Missouri offensive tackle Javon Foster with the 114th pick.

The Athletic NFL Draft analyst Dane Brugler on Foster: A three-year starter at Missouri, Foster was entrenched at left tackle in offensive coordinator Kirby Moore’s RPO, zone-based run scheme. After not playing football or lifting weights until he was 16, he made noticeable improvements during his time in Columbia and earned first team All-SEC as a super senior in 2023.

A long-limbed, high-cut blocker, Foster is at his best when he properly uses his length and redirect strength to widen defenders in the run game or stymie rushers off the edge.

However, he has lunging tendencies and bad habits often leave him out-leveraged (also finished with the second-most penalties in the SEC in 2023).

Overall, Foster isn’t a great bender, and his footwork and technique must continue to improve. But his size, strength and functional movements are a solid starting point for an NFL team looking for a developmental prospect.

He projects as a backup left tackle with a chance to be more.

KC Joyner

On pace for one of the lowest RB totals of all time

Per Pro Football Reference, the 2023 NFL Draft saw the second-lowest number of running backs drafted in a season. The 18 players selected at that position was tied with 2020 for that next to last mark and only three ahead of the last place pace of 15 in 2010.

This draft may end up giving 2010 a run for the money for fewest running backs selected. We are nearly halfway through the fourth round and only four running backs have been taken thus far (Jonathon Brooks, Trey Benson, Blake Corum and MarShawn Lloyd).

Given the respective positional needs for the teams on the board in Round 4, that number may not move up by much headed into Round 5.

Scott Dochterman

Fourth-round pass catching breakdowns

Theo Johnson: An ascending tight end over his four seasons at Penn State, Theo Johnson was solid in 2023 with 34 catches for 341 yards and a team-high seven touchdowns.

With tremendous size (6-6, 259) and speed (4.57 in the 40) plus a large wingspan (80 ¾), Johnson seems to offer more as a prospect than what he showed with the Nittany Lions. The Giants bet on Johnson’s upside and this is insurance in case Darren Waller decides to retire.

Devontez Walker: A productive receiver at Kent State in 2022, Tez Walker transferred to North Carolina to be closer to his family. He got denied an immediate waiver by the NCAA but eventually was allowed to play.

In eight games (six starts), Walker caught 41 passes for 699 yards (17 yards per catch) and seven scores for the Tar Heels. Walker has good size (6-1 ¼, 193) and electrifying speed (4.36 40 time).

He will stretch defenses immediately and should become a big-time weapon in Baltimore.

Daniel Popper

The newest Charger, Justin Eboigbe, on coming back from neck/spinal cord surgery in 2022: "It wasn't any luck. It was just work."

He says he can squat up to 600 lbs now, and the neck does not require any maintenance.

Round 4, No. 113: Ravens draft UNC WR Devontez Walker

Round 4, No. 113: Ravens draft UNC WR Devontez Walker

(Photo: Grant Halverson / Getty Images)

The Baltimore Ravens selected North Carolina wide receiver Devontez Walker with the 113th pick.

The Athletic NFL Draft analyst Dane Brugler on Walker: A one-year starter at North Carolina, Walker was an outside receiver in offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey’s scheme, lining up almost exclusively to the right of the formation.

His fight for eligibility last season received national attention, and his impact on the Tar Heels’ offense was obvious once he took the field.

With a high average depth of target in 2023 (18.2 yards), Walker did his best work downfield using his acceleration, tracking skills and ability to change gears when the ball was in the air. However, he won’t get easy looks in the NFL, and his route running is begging for improved footwork, tempo and overall deception to help him uncover on intermediate routes.

Overall, Walker is a vertical/stretch receiver who requires a linear route tree, but he is a big-play threat with a promising catch radius and the speed to climb on top of coverage.

He must develop better consistency in his routes and hands to be more than a complementary outside option.
