Liverpool England Port Guide

If you’re looking for a place in Northern England that is the most reminiscent of the exciting city of London, then Liverpool is your answer. Full of history and culture, Liverpool is second only to London for the highest number of museums, theaters, and art galleries in England. But Liverpool isn’t just an alternative to London. Liverpool has an energy and vibe all its own.

Liverpool has a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and was even named the European Capital of Culture in 2008. Beyond the monuments, you’ll find beloved soccer teams like Liverpool FC and Everton FC. (Don’t forget it’s football, not soccer, in England!) Clubs pay homage to one of Liverpool’s most famous exports, the Beatles.

European cruise passengers sailing to Liverpool dock right in the city center and can spend the day learning more about the city where the Beatles got their start, touring old English heritage sites, and walking along the historic waterfront.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to liverpool, albert dock.

The historic Albert Dock has been impeccably restored in recent years, transforming a formerly tired harbor basin into an exciting and gentrified area where you’ll find Victorian buildings around an arcaded walkway. High-end boutiques, restaurants, cafes, and luxury apartments inhabit the surrounding buildings.

Albert Dock is also home to a number of museums. A popular one with tourists is the Beatles Story, which has memorabilia and films about the iconic musical foursome. Those looking for more in-depth history on Liverpool’s past can visit the International Slavery Museum, which is located near the 18th century dry dock where slave ships were refurbished and repaired, or the Border Force National Museum, which focuses on the history of smuggling and contraband via Albert Dock.

The museums aren’t the only thing famously historic about Albert Dock. The dock itself was the first of its kind in Great Britain that was built using only bricks and iron. This distinction is what gave it the royal treatment in 2018, with its previous name of “Albert Dock” being changed to “Royal Albert Dock”.

Pier Head is an area of Liverpool right by the harbor famous for its stunning trio of buildings that stand proudly over the waterfront. These buildings consist of the Port of Liverpool Building, the Cunard Building, and the Royal Liver Building. Pier Head is also home to the Titanic Memorial that pays tribute to the “Heroes in the Engine Room” and the Queen Victoria monument.

St. George’s Hall

St. George’s Hall has it all for architecture buffs: gorgeous neoclassical architecture featuring Corinthian columns and statues as well as neo-Greek buildings housing libraries; music halls (you’ll find one of the world’s largest organs within the beautiful Great Hall); lovely gardens featuring statues of famous former residents of Liverpool; and the oldest building in Liverpool’s city center, a former charitable school begun in 1717 that is now called the Bluecoat Chambers and is a creative hub for the arts.

Radio City Tower Viewing Gallery

Another can’t-miss sight to see (in more ways than one) located near St. George’s Hall is the St. John’s Beacon, which looks like a spaceship atop a pole and boasts the best views of the city from its Radio City Tower Viewing Gallery. This platform is home to some of the most popular radio stations in England. Most travel to its top not for the music, but for the 360-degree panoramic views of Liverpool and beyond.

Liverpool’s Churches and Cathedrals

Three religious buildings stand out in Liverpool. The first is the Anglican Liverpool Cathedral, which is quite modern in terms of European cathedrals. It began in 1929 and was completed in 1967, showcasing a cylindrical tower in the center of the cathedral 200 feet in diameter and 330 feet high. The second church of note is the Catholic Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, which gives a historic nod to the high proportion of people living in the city that are of Irish descent going back to the 19th and 20th centuries when many immigrants from Ireland arrived to Liverpool and ended up settling in the city. The third prominent church in Liverpool is the Anglican Church of Our Lady and Saint Nicholas, which has served as a place of worship since the 13th century.

Learn More About Liverpool Shore Excursions

Top things to do in liverpool, walk in the footsteps of the beatles.

Liverpool is the childhood home of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. These four names are synonymous with one of the greatest (arguably the greatest) musical group of all time: the Beatles. While in Liverpool, you can see the childhood homes of Paul McCartney and John Lennon as well as the locations that inspired songs such as Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane.

You’ll also find museums dedicated to the Beatles here, including the Beatles Story at Albert Dock and Beatles memorabilia at the Museum of Liverpool. See their names on the Wall of Fame located on the musically important Mathew Street. The Wall of Fame lists the names of every Liverpool band or solo musician who got a number one hit on the UK charts. Matthew Street is also home to the Cavern Club, where the Beatles played over 300 times.

Merseyside Maritime Museum

If you want to learn more about the maritime history of Liverpool during your time in the city, you can’t miss a visit to the Merseyside Maritime Museum. This interesting museum has a number of exhibits that tell the past tales of the thousands of British citizens who left the country aboard the Mersey between 1830 and 1930. Other exhibits display seafaring artifacts for the area in and around Liverpool that date back to the 13th century. You’ll hear tales about the tragedy-bound ships of Titanic and Lusitania and their ties to Liverpool, map rooms and information boards about the Royal Navy in World War II, a depiction of what it was like living on a submarine during war times, and a number of model ships and vessels on display.

Walker Art Gallery

The Walker Art Gallery is an excellent place to tour for those interested in the visual arts, particularly from the 18th to 20th centuries as its display of English paintings and sculptures from this time period is considered to be the best you’ll find outside of London. Art from as far back as the 14th century is also on display, including works by famous artists such as Rembrandt and Rodin. Don’t miss seeing the painting called Sweethearts and Wives, which depicts a good-bye scene at Pier Head in Liverpool before the sailors set off to sea.

For more art, head to Mossley Hill in Liverpool, where you’ll find the 19th century Sudley House, a beautiful mansion that is an extension of Walker Art Gallery and houses an additional gallery of artwork.

Manchester City Tour

When traveling on one of our Liverpool cruises, you may want to spend your time in port visiting another nearby city: Manchester. Doing a city tour to Manchester from Liverpool is especially popular with soccer fanatics who want to see Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United, which is one of the most beloved sports teams in the world.

While in Manchester, you can also see the Lowry, an ultra-modern building home to waterside arts, Etihad Stadium, home to Manchester’s other soccer team called Manchester City FC, and visit the Science and Industry Museum, which is a fitting stop since Manchester has a strong industrial past.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Liverpool Cruise Port

For some beer and cocktail drinking with some music history thrown in while on your cruise to Liverpool, head to the Cavern Club, the music venue and bar where the Beatles got their start performing. The bar and performance venue is located in a brick-lined cellar that provides a dive bar atmosphere despite being one of the most famous bars in the world.

For a hip vibe with multiple food and drink options, head to Cains Brewery Village, a large space home to vintage shops, artist workspaces, coffee shops, and bars. The bars range from craft beer bars to BBQ style bars with an outdoor ambiance to tank bars. Cains Brewery Village is also home to Baltic Market, Liverpool’s first street food market.

Culture & History of the Liverpool Cruise Port

Liverpool is one of the oldest cities in the United Kingdom and has a history rich in maritime tradition. A large number of cultures and religions are found in the city, and many of its people are of Irish and Welsh descent. The origins of Liverpool date back to 1190. It was an important maritime and industrial city for many of the centuries that followed. In the 1970s, the city began to see a steep economic downturn that it only recently recovered from. Today, those on a cruise to Liverpool will find that it’s a thriving and exciting city to explore with lots of memorable attractions and modern amenities.

Liverpool was named Capital of Culture in 2008 for many reasons. Its famous music scene, die-hard football fans, and myriad of art museums, plus an eclectic bar and restaurant scene, make it a fitting place for those looking to experience local culture.

Liverpool Port Facilities & Location

Liverpool cruise port is located right by Pier Head and is directly adjacent to the Royal Liver Building. From the cruise terminal, it’s a short walk to some of the Liverpool’s top attractions. Though there aren’t many amenities right inside the terminal, you’ll find a plethora of restaurants and shops right outside it on Pier Head.

Transportation in Liverpool

Passengers on Liverpool cruises will find it’s easy to get around while in port. You’ll find a taxi rank right by the cruise terminal on St. Nicholas Place. If you want to catch a train to Manchester or somewhere else in England, the train station is just a 20-minute walk away (Lime Street Station). Another convenient mode of transportation when you cruise to Lisbon is the Hop-on Hop-Off bus that departs from the cruise port every 15 minutes.

Shopping Near the Liverpool Cruise Port

Liverpool ONE is a large shopping complex located right by the waterfront. It has a plethora of shops filled with high street fashion and high-end accessories. Spend some time in two of England’s popular department stores, John Lewis & Partners and Debenhams. After you shop ‘til you drop, head to one of Liverpool ONE’s many restaurants or bars for some sticky toffee pudding or a refreshing pint.

For some vintage finds or unique souvenirs from the UK, the place to head in Liverpool is Red Brick, which is heralded as Liverpool’s best independent shopping experience. Red Brick is made up of two parts: Red Brick Vintage, where you’ll find unique vintage goods, and Red Brick Hangar, which is an indoor marketplace. Red Brick is located in Cains Brewery Village.

You can also find many souvenirs and clothing shops along Royal Albert Dock during your cruise to Liverpool.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The accepted currency in Liverpool and the rest of the UK is the British pound. You’ll find ATMs all over the city dispensing cash in this currency. Visa, MasterCard, and Maestro are also accepted by most businesses in Liverpool.

For tipping, it’s customary to leave 10% to 15% for meals, though some places will already tack on a service charge that is usually 12.5%, so double check that your bill doesn’t include that. You’re not expected to tip for take-out or fast food. Tipping 10% to 15% for taxi drivers is also customary, though it’s also acceptable to simply round up your total fare depending on the total amount.

MSC VIRTUOSA ARRIVES IN LIVERPOOL READY TO EMBARK GUESTS BIGGEST CRUISE SHIP TO EVER CALL AT THE PORT

Liverpool, UK – 8 June 2021 – The Port of Liverpool has welcomed the first call of MSC Virtuosa this morning, ready to embark local holidaymakers for a special range of seven-night summer sailings around the British Isles.   On board MSC Virtuosa , guests will find an unbeatable holiday offering – all in one place. With unparalleled facilities and entertainment for every member of the family, bringing experiences that they have missed over the last year, from live music performances, a choice of four full-scale theatre shows, 21 bars and restaurants, swimming pools, bowling alley, aquapark and much more. Guests can also enjoy the world’s first futuristic, immersive experience at sea at the MSC Starship Club where Rob, the humanoid robotic bartender, stirs up galactic cocktails.   Usually able to accommodate over 6,000 guests, the 1,085ft-long ship is currently sailing with only 1,000 guests in accordance with government guidance.   Antonio Paradiso, Managing Director of MSC Cruises UK & Ireland commented : “MSC Cruises is excited to be in Liverpool for the first time and we are proud to bring our new flagship MSC Virtuosa to this renowned cultural city. Offering holidaymakers the option to embark in Liverpool provides some much needed convenience with direct access to MSC Virtuosa’s world class facilities. From West-End style shows and speciality restaurants, to an immersive entertainment lounge with a humanoid robotic bartender or high energy water parks, holidaymakers joining us in Liverpool can start discovering again as we take them on a tour of some of the best destinations across the UK.”   Angie Redhead, Head of Cruise Liverpool added: “We are delighted to offer guests the opportunity to join an MSC cruise in Liverpool for the very first time and as MSC Virtuosa is the largest cruise ship to ever call here, I have no doubt she will draw quite a crowd to our World Heritage Waterfront! We just know that MSC Cruises’ guests are going to love the convenience of embarking in Liverpool, whilst our amazingly friendly city will extend a warm Liverpool welcome to everyone on board.”   MSC Cruises’ new flagship kicked off her inaugural season last month offering a series of three- and four-night mini cruises, and now commences her seven-night cruises throughout the summer, exclusively for UK resident guests. For the week-long sailings, guests can embark directly at Liverpool, with port calls including Portland, Dorset,  Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Greenock, close to Glasgow, Scotland.   Both vaccinated and non-vaccinated guests are welcome on board, as all guests are tested at embarkation. This falls under MSC Cruises’ industry-leading and proven health and safety protocol developed by a Blue Ribbon Panel of experts. This protocol was first deployed on MSC Grandiosa in August 2020 and has since helped protect thousands of guests sailing on the ship in the Mediterranean.   Guests aboard MSC Virtuosa may explore ashore in each destination the ship calls, by taking part in ‘bubble’ shore excursions, carefully developed to extend the comprehensive health and safety protocol that has been tried and tested onboard, ashore. With sanitised transfers, tour guides and drivers in PPE and all guests staying within their group, visits to pre-screened venues and will offer reserved areas for MSC Cruises guests. All of these measures not only help to protect the health of the ship’s guests, but also residents of the local communities where the ship calls.   MSC Cruises has a long-term goal to achieve a zero-impact cruise operation, and MSC Virtuosa represents another step towards this goal as one of the most environmentally conscious cruise ships at sea. The ship features some of the most advanced technology currently available, such as shore-to-ship power to substantially reduce emissions close to urbans areas, waste management centres, a hybrid exhaust gas cleaning system, and advanced water treatment systems.   For more information and to book, visit: www.msccruises.co.uk/cruises/ships/msc-virtuosa/itineraries

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. From $2,050 per person for a six-day sailing. Accessible ship. — Paul Brady

Oceania Cruises’ Vista

Nick Tortajada/Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. From $2,499 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Courtesy of Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. From $4,669 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Elizabeth Rhodes

Silversea’s Silver Nova

Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. From $3,250 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — David Swanson

The 10 Biggest Cruise Ships in the World

Where to float on the biggest boats.

E very vessel that's once held the title of "biggest cruise ship" has one thing in common: It is a destination in and of itself. Of course, these enormous passenger cruise ships also transport guests to thrilling ports, exotic islands and remote locations too. It's almost as if you could live on a cruise ship !

These massive ships each have so much going on: theater and music on a multitude of stages, water slides, roller coasters and go-kart tracks, zip lines, ice skating rinks, laser tag arenas—you name it. There are also hidden cruise features waiting to be discovered and more restaurants than you will ever need to feed yourself. They are, simply put, awe-inspiring creations. Have you ever thought about how cruise ships float ?

One of the most important cruise tips for vacationing on one of these big boats is to accept that you won't be able to do it all on your first visit. Thankfully, with many itineraries to choose from, you can sail on the largest cruise ship again and again, learn cruise ship code words and have new experiences every single time you're on board one of these massive ships.

What is largest cruise ship in the world?

The current reigning champion is Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas. But next year, there will be a brand-new biggest cruise ship, the Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas . Planned with 20 decks, 2,805 staterooms, seven pools and nine hot tubs, the future largest ship in the world is currently being built in Finland. Here are the details about the biggest and grandest ships to sail on.

Wonder of the Seas

Cruise line: Royal Caribbean

Length: 1,188 feet

Width: 215 feet

Guest capacity: 7,084

A true wonder, the current biggest ship in the world delights guests every week with a feast of activities, shows, meals and memories. Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas , an Oasis-class ship that is a city at sea, has 16 guest decks, 2,204 crew members from every corner of the planet and more than 10 bars and 20 dining destinations—nine of which are complimentary. Curiously, even though the Icon of the Seas will eventually take the mantle as the largest cruise ship, Wonder will still have more staterooms than its new big sister, a whopping 2,867 of them.

It also features a carousel on a real boardwalk, a dry slide that twists down 10 decks, surfing simulators, a laser tag arena, an ice skating rink and a zip line that spans the interior width of the ship. It also has interior rooms with balconies that look out over the restaurant and a tree-lined neighborhood that looks like Central Park. Wonder of the Seas will soon lose its crown as the biggest cruise ship in the world, but it'll never lose its ability to provide unique vacations thanks to affordable cruises for every kind of traveler.

World Europa

Cruise line: MSC

Length: 1,093 feet

Width: 154 feet

Guest capacity: 6,762

MSC is not only a privately held shipping company, the largest in the world, they are also the maker of some of the largest cruise ships in the world. The World Europa , which took to the sea for the first time in 2022, is currently escorting passengers all over the Mediterranean, using one of the cleanest marine fuels to do so.

The World Europa features some of the best rooms on a cruise ship, thanks to having the most cabins with a balcony. It also has the world's longest dry slide at sea, taking adventurous cruisers down 12 decks in a shiny, twisting stainless steel tube, and bumper cars in a SportsPlex arena that also hosts rollerblading—not at the same time, however. People looking for something a little less dramatic will enjoy six pools, some surrounded by tropical greenery, 14 whirlpools and MSC's first-ever department store at sea. Finally, you'll never go hungry on this ship , given its 10 restaurants, including four main dining rooms and three buffets.

Cruise line: P&O Cruises

Length: 1,130 feet

Width: 138 feet

Guest capacity: 6,685

Whether you want the sunshine of the Caribbean or the culture found in and around Mediterranean ports, Arvia is P&O's largest cruise ship and one of the biggest cruise ships in the world, with 1,800 crew members, a three-screen cinema complex, a wide range of staterooms to choose from and four pools, including an infinity pool with a swim-up bar. There are also nearly two dozen whirlpool spas, a sauna, steam room and a hydrotherapy pool.

This means that whether you're taking a singles cruise or have children in tow—the Arvia is a family-friendly ship with age-specific kids clubs on board—serious rest and relaxation are definitely on the agenda. Then, when you're feeling spry and ready for some adventure during your vacation at sea, you can try an escape room or ropes course, play in the sports arena or strut your stuff in a dance class.

Costa Toscana

Cruise line: Costa Cruises

Length: 1,105 feet

Width: 137 feet

Guest capacity: 6,600

A sister to the Smeralda , the Costa Toscana became the fleet's largest cruise ship when it took to the water in March 2022. The ship uses LNG propulsion engines to make sea travel more sustainable, both while cruising and in ports of call around the world. An international crew of 1,678 works to deliver dream vacations for up to 6,600 passengers who will love to discover all there is to do, see and experience on board.

The ship has 1,550 staterooms ranging from interior cabins to elaborate suites, a baker's dozen pools and whirlpools, and a total of 20 restaurants, bars and lounges. Costa's new flagship vessel is a smart city at sea, offering subtly high-tech sailings that provide fun for the whole family, thanks to Peppa Pig character parties, an aqua park with water slides and a mind-bending skywalk 213 feet above the ocean! So book a vacation on one of the largest cruise ships in the world, then pack your cruise ducks and your appetite for learning how to cook at Toscana 's Food LAB cooking school, among other adventures at sea.

Celebration

Cruise line: Carnival

Guest capacity: 6,631

As cruise lines jockey for position at the top of the biggest cruise ship in the world leaderboard, the original family-fun ships are also getting larger. A total of 1,735 international crew, famously considered the best in the business, will ensure that every family's cruise on the Celebration not only maximizes the fun but also the memories, and all at some of the most affordable prices in the cruise industry.

This ship has BOLT, the first roller coaster at sea, Dr. Seuss children's themed cruises with character appearances, and incredible water parks with multiple slides. Delicious food is made fast-and-fresh at Guy's Burger Joint, Shaq's Big Chicken and the Seafood Shack, as well as tasty street-food carts located near the pools. Plus, with all the extra space on the largest cruise ship in their fleet, Carnival's Playlist Productions has more stages to dazzle you and your kids with famously fantastic live music and musical theater.

Cruise line: Norwegian

Length: 1,094 feet

Width: 136 feet

Guest capacity: 3,998

With 1,700 crew members and more than 2,000 staterooms, including suites in The Haven—Norwegian's luxurious, private and tranquil ship-within-a-ship concept high atop the ship, which comes with 24-hour butler service and its own lavish sundeck—the Encore ranks among the largest cruise ships in the world. Curiously, this vessel from 2019 is still the largest in the Norwegian fleet! Both Prima  and the forthcoming Viva were built after Encore but are considerably smaller in size, bucking the cruise industry trend of "bigger is better."

Encore shines as a superior and super big ship, the fourth in the Breakaway Plus class, and features a multi-deck go-kart track, the Cavern Club music venue, fashioned after the famous Liverpool room where The Beatles became big, a virtual-reality gaming room, an outdoor laser-tag arena and some of the best food at sea. No doubt, this will become one of every passenger's favorite cruises.

Symphony of the Seas

Width: 216 feet

Guest capacity: 6,680

None of the many all-inclusive cruises take place on the largest cruise ships, but you may be forgiven for thinking you're enjoying an all-inclusive experience on Symphony of the Seas . The ship's many spectacular activities include a zip line that soars above the boardwalk many decks below, an old-fashioned carousel, Broadway-style theater shows, surfing simulators and the 10-story Abyss dry slide. There's also delicious food all over the ship that is 100% complimentary. And while you may fly on the zip line over and over again, you'll probably still wonder, Why do cruise ships have wings ?

After its maiden voyage in April 2018, Symphony was the biggest cruise ship in the world. But because of its ingenious neighborhood concept, guests rarely feel overcrowded. Seven distinct areas carve up the ship into unique spaces to play, eat, stroll, sleep and enjoy live entertainment, and the traffic flows brilliantly to make passengers feel as though they're on a more intimate ship and not cruising with upward of 6,680 other people in more than 2,700 staterooms, some of which are interior cabins with balconies that boast views of the Central Park neighborhood's greenery and eateries.

Cruise line: AIDA

Guest capacity: 6,654

While American travelers looking to cruise the Caribbean may not encounter her, the AIDAnova is not only the largest cruise ship in the AIDA fleet, she's also a revolutionary lady. The ship's Four Elements adventure deck, with its three water slides and climbing garden under the dome of a retractable glass roof, drops jaws on every sailing. The ship's more than 2,600 staterooms with 20 different types, ranging from a glorious two-deck penthouse to budget-friendly interior cabins, allow guests to sleep well and arrive in port well rested, and the two-deck spa offering 80 different treatments provides even more healing and luxury.

But AIDAnova is also impressive because it made history as the world's first cruise ship to be powered in port and at sea by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the world's cleanest burning fossil fuel. It's important that big ships can be more sustainable, but did you ever wonder why there are big balls on cruise ships ?

Sun Princess

Cruise line: Princess

Length: 1,133 feet

Guest capacity: 4,300

The Love Boat is getting much, much bigger! Yes, this is the namesake ship from the beloved '70s TV show. With 2,150 cabins, the Sun Princess is close to carrying 4,300 passengers to Europe for its inaugural season later this year. And then all around the world, people will be asking, "Why do cruise ships have to stop in Canada?"

The third ship in the history of the fleet to be graced with the iconic name, the S un Princess is poised to be a fan favorite. There are more than 29 bars, lounges and restaurants on board, with the Sea View Terrace and Bar ensconced in glass at the top and front of the ship, book-ended by the Wake View Terrace at the back, which has a stunning infinity pool hanging off the edge. Drawing inspiration from the tiered terraces of Santorini, Greece, this evocative area will have an indoor/outdoor pool to enjoy supreme relaxation during the day. But once the sun says goodbye, the pool becomes a stage and the dome above transforms into an entertainment venue with eye-popping lighting effects.

Length: 1,085 feet

Width: 141 feet

Guest capacity: 6,334

Come June 2023, one of the newest and biggest cruise ships at sea will be carrying eager pasengers, and more than 1,700 dedicated crew members, to world-class destinations in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. While on board the Euribia , cruisers will enjoy a massive amount of personal space (100-plus square feet per person) at any one of five unique pools, including one of the most intricate waterparks at sea, covering more than 10,000 square feet.

These watery areas of rest, relaxation and revelry will comfortably accommodate more than 1,000 guests at a time. Indoors, a 360-foot-long Mediterranean-style promenade is lined with myriad shops, along with some of the 20 bars and 10 restaurants found on the ship. It also features a domed LED screen that magically displays the sky and other animations throughout the day and night. MSC continues to be a favorite cruise line of environmentalist travelers looking to ease their mind and minimize their footprint, as the Euribia has an advanced onboard wastewater treatment system that doesn't allow any water to leave the ship without being treated and cleaned.
