TESTIMONIALS

“Kootenay Cycling Adventures was the perfect way to get out cycling for us. John offers a private 4 day Kootenay Loop tour through magnificent scenery. The combination of the road and rail trails was wonderful. The hotels he uses are excellent, his snack stops are well timed with nourishing treats and his lunches are delicious. And his congenial personality rounds out a 5 star experience. We rented Ebikes from John which ramped it up to a 10 star experience for us. We can highly recommend John and Kootenay cycling”

– Donna, July 2022

“We LOVED our Slocan Valley ride, expertly supported by John. I would highly recommend Kootenay Cycling Adventures if you are traveling to this spectacularly beautiful part of the planet. John was great with regard to communications, covering all of the bases and being friendly and helpful with suggestions for visits in the area”

– Helen, October 2022

“Cycling in the Kootenays!”

My husband and I had an amazing experience cycling in the Kootenays at the end of June. The weather was perfect, the air clean and fresh and the scenery was spectacular – wild flowers, snow capped mountains and a black bear! John had thought of everything and all the personal touches made this trip very memorable. They cycling is mostly main roads and the traffic was for the most part light and very respectful of cyclists. The best part was a quiet winding side road with gentle rolling hills, great scenery and farm stands along the way. This 3 day trip is ideal for a long weekend or tack on a few more days and enjoy the city of Nelson. A positive experience and a trip we will highly recommend to friends and family.

May 2022: There are closures along the KVR due to washouts and landslides. Learn more here .

July 2022: There are additional closures between Hope and Chilliwack Lake due to washouts. Information on closures can be found here , and an interactive map showing forest service road conditions can be found here .

The BC Trail traverses eastward across British Columbia’s southern border. The route starts in Cultus Lake, a stone’s throw from Vancouver — where BC’s segment of the Trans Canada Trail leaves suburban pathways for dirt — and ends in the small Rocky Mountain ski town of Fernie.

In the early ‘90s the BC Trail began as part of the Trans Canada Trail project as an effort to expand the already-popular Kettle Valley Rail Trail across the province, from Victoria to the Alberta border. While the KVR segment from Princeton to Midway remains among Canada’s most popular off-pavement bike tours, this longer route, which showcases the bulk of BC’s Trans Canada Trail, with the exclusion of the Vancouver Island section and the convoluted maze of suburban bike paths in the Fraser Valley, offers less-developed riding for the more adventurous rider. While decommissioned rail trails still make up the majority of the terrain, don’t be fooled, many of these sections are rough and are hard on gear and riders alike.

BC Epic 1000 Bikepacking Route

The BC Trail is arguably the best way to explore and visit the many breathtaking regions of British Columbia. The Coquihalla River Trail, Kettle Valley Rail Trail, and the Great Northern Rail Trail link some of the larger towns together, accompanied by scenic forest service roads and the occasional reminder that B.C is home to some technical, rocky singletrack. Popular destinations like the the Myra Canyon Trestles and old railroad tunnels are met alongside less travelled gems like Gray Creek Pass and elevated views of the Columbia River. The route mixes a healthy dose of frontcountry amenities with remote sections that require a bit more skill and planning.

As an added bonus, a self-supported bikepacking race, known as the BC Epic 1000, follows the BC Trail from Merritt to Fernie every June in true grand depart format. Lennard Pretorius of Kamloops, B.C first introduced the race in 2016 with only 7 of 14 riders finishing the route, and saw double the interest and a much higher completion rate in 2017. For riders looking for a surprisingly challenging bikepacking race, make sure to check out the links found in additional resources at the bottom of this page.

Difficulty Rating: The BC Trail was assigned a 5 out of 10 based on the distance covered and the surprisingly harsh terrain the trails follow. Although the majority of the route is not technically difficult, there are some loose, sandy, and sections with repetitive washboard that can be hard on riders. The route has plenty of services, but there are a few remote sections along the trail that have limited bailout points, which could potentially force longer than anticipated days if a resupply is needed.

Trail Notes

  • Travel on what were some of the most expensive rail roads in the world to build through some of most scenic regions of Central B.C.
  • Trestles and tunnels up to a kilometre long, will remind you of the significance of the railroad in Canadian history.
  • Grey Creek Pass is a 1,500m climb over 17km, only those who have reached the top recognize the significance of this small hurdle.
  • Ride high above the remote valleys that link some of the resupply points together, each day brings on a new challenge and new rewards.
  • Cross from valley to valley with fantastic views into the expanse of mountain ranges, rivers, and lakes beyond.
  • The Balfour Ferry across Kootenay Lake before taking on Grey Creek Pass, it’s free and offers fantastic views of local mountain ranges.
  • The BC Epic 1000 is a self-supported bikepacking race with a grand depart each June that follows the Trans BC from Merritt to Fernie.
  • Passing through several unique geographic regions and quirky towns that provide great resupply points along the way.
  • 30km of hard packed flowy singletrack between Cranbrook and Wardner via the Chief Isadore Trail.
  • Do not underestimate the terrain. Although the route follows a great portion of the Trans Canada Trail, now known as the Great Trail, most sections are incredibly rough and are slow going.
  • Cell service is limited and often non existent between towns which can sometimes be up to 8 hours of riding, bring a SPOT or similar communication device.
  • There are wild animals along the route including but not limited to cougars, black bears, grizzly bears, moose, elk, and llamas. Bear spray is strongly recommended.
  • Snow can stick around at higher elevations along the route like Grey Creek Pass and Farron Pass, these sections are usually clear by late June.
  • The best time to ride the route is late June to September due to snow, as mentioned above, and grizzly activity between Salmo and Nelson.
  • Navigating the BC Trail is not easy and a GPS is highly recommended, make sure you have extra batteries or some way to charge it.
  • There’s no shortage of campgrounds, motels, and recreation sites along the route, many of which are labeled on the route map. Most recreation sites are free or only $12 to use, those looking to save cash should take advantage of these options.
  • Some small towns close down early in the day, and will then offer no amenities even if they are listed on the route map. If you are forced to stealth camp, do so legally and away from people’s properties. And as always, #leavenotrace.
  • There are many resupply points along the route, including fantastic restaurants, dodgy gas stations, and premium level grocery stores.
  • I carried a breakfast and a dinner on me at all times incase I showed up late to a small town, this was crucial on more than one occasion and a good habit to get into.
  • Pack a water purification system of some kind, a pump or tabs, as there is plenty of mountain runoff and small lakes along the route. I did fine carrying a 1.18 litre Klean Kanteen on my downtube and a 750 ml bottle up front, topping them both up as needed.
  • You may end up staying in a remote location, far from any store, so be prepared for an impromptu backcountry campout. Do not store food in your tent or where you sleep.
  • The majority of the route is rough, chunky, and often very sandy. Plus sized tires or a suspension fork is not a bad idea to help absorb the washboard riddled trails. One of the primary reasons for grand depart riders to drop out is not being prepared for the constant chatter while riding long days. C, chamois cream and proper hygiene are essential for putting in over 150km days.
  • All rail grade? No not really. Expect some pushing, some steep descents, and substantial elevation gain each day.
  • It is best, if possible, to arrange a pickup at the end of the route but you can pack up your bike and take a greyhound bus if that is your only option.
  • Sign the Trans Canada Trail registers in Midway, the Gray Creek Store, and any others you come across, these are used to allocate funding and aid in trail stewardship efforts.

Cycle through one of Canada's sunniest regions on an awe-inspiring section of the Trans Canada Trail in the Okanagan, British Columbia. The Kettle Valley Rail Trail (KVR) is a converted railway bed originally built in the early 1900s to facilitate mining in the area. Although surrounded by stunning mountain scenery, the route needed to be suitable for trains, so the rail trail's grade is never over 2.2%, making for a pleasant cycling route. Ride alongside beautiful lakes, over the dramatic Myra Canyon Trestles, through mountain tunnels, and into the heart of one of the biggest fruit and wine-producing areas in Canada. Enjoy views of vine-covered hillsides along Okanagan Lake and endless opportunities to sample the local wines and culinary delights of Naramata, Summerland and Kelowna.

Nice to Rough Trail Surfaces

The Kettle Valley Rail Trail encompasses everything from hard packed surfaces to soft, sandy conditions and some rocky areas. You can expect to occasionally find standing water in some sections as well as potential detours. Please note that this is a multi-use trail and motorized vehicles (ATVs) are permitted. Be prepared for rougher sections including potholes in the higher traffic areas and other potential obstructions. Please note that the trail authority that maintains the trail does so sporadically throughout the season on an annual basis. Be prepared for rougher sections of trail undergoing maintenance during this process.

Introductory to moderate. The Kettle Valley Rail Trail is primarily rolled stone dust and dirt, and never has more than a 2.2% grade. In wet weather, parts of the trail may be muddy and sections may be in need of minor repair. We've made your ride lighter by moving your extra luggage ahead where required. Most cyclists of average ability should be able to complete the route easily especially as the cycling days do not exceed 60 kilometres in distance. Self guided walking or cycling requires individuals to use problem solving skills, be adaptable and have a keen eye. It is recommended that you are comfortable map reading, referring to route notes and that you have a good sense of direction (or are willing to work on improving this!). Cyclists will be expected to know how to fix a flat tire and make basic adjustments to their bicycles using the included repair kit. Sometimes route finding, losing your way, finding it again and asking the locals for help is all part of the adventure. If you’ve never been on a self guided trip, after the first couple of days you will get the hang of if as the vast majority of our first time travellers attest. Please be assured that our written material issued to you for route finding is updated regularly and we provide a 7-day service hotline in the event of any problems.

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS HAVE TO SAY! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Fabulous fun ride with our knowledgeable, safety conscious and entertaining guide Michael. He took us to Government House, Chinatown, the Castle and through interesting Neighborhoods. We ended our tour at the waterfront. Overall the bike ride was a great workout and we learned so much about beautiful and charming Victoria. Highly recommend !!

Great experience. Rented e-bikes. Junior was very helpful in showing us how to use the technology and making sure the seat levels were high enough. Had a great time riding the Galloping Goose and Lochside trails. Had an unfortunate flat tire, but they came to where we were and exchanged the bike with flat tire for a new one. We were able to continue. One of the staff told us about a beautiful site we had never heard of in the typical tourist info.

We did not do a tour but instead decided to rent bikes and follow our own route. A staff member helped us decide our route on a map they provided, going through Chinatown and coming down and returning along the water. Victoria has many bike lanes, making it easy to navigate the city. Staff were very helpful in general, adjusting the bikes to our needs. I would strongly recommend this shop whether you are interested in a tour or just renting bikes to enjoy on your own.

Had a great time! Our fishing charter cancelled on us so we were looking for something else to do. We didn’t all originally agree on a bike tour but in the end everyone thoroughly enjoyed it, some even said it was their favorite thing we did. Great guides that had some really interesting information & kept our kids on their toes. All around a very friendly and helpful shop, not many places are like this anymore!

We had this wonderful guide, Ian. He was funny, informative and knowledgeable. Don't worry if you aren't a super cyclist - the pace is slow and easy with lots of stops. The tour was about 2 hours and was not too strenuous - just fun. I went with my partner and two other couples, all of us new to the city. It's a great way to see the highlights, get a bit of exercise and learn some history. A MUST do.

Rick our guide was excellent. Safety was a priority. He is very knowledgeable about the area and history and took us to most of the important landmarks and sites in the time allotted. The bikes were in excellent condition and they worked with us at the beginning to make sure the height and seat positions were at maximum comfort for us. We got to see more then just the downtown area, more cultural and artsy areas we wouldn’t have seen otherwise. If you love biking then this tour is for you. We try and choose bike tours wherever we go. Thanks Rick! Excellent job!

“Tamara designed an amazing custom tour for us and organized everything from our accommodation, wine tasting, vineyard picnics, and restaurant bookings. She drove the support van and would meet us at every stop with water, cold towels, smiles, and encouragement. The van was indispensable for carrying all of our wine purchases.”
“Loved it! Great wineries. We were celebrating a 79th birthday and even the wineries were made aware.”
“We went to Wild Goose, Noble and Church States wineries. It did not feel like biking at all but a lot of wine tasting and eating. we rode from Osoyoos to Wild Goose Winery and back and it was about 95km.”
“Darcy and Tamara gave us the best experience of our trip. The group had varied levels of cycling ability from beginner to advanced yet we all had a ton of fun and a great ride. Awesome food and great wine tastings we wouldn’t have known about make this tour a cut above and it’s so well organized from start to finish. The thought, knowledge of the area and friendly attitude Epic Cycling brings to each ride makes for an unbeatable day in beautiful Penticton. We’ll definitely be back.”
“Our guides were accomplished athletes who were so knowledgeable about biking and the area but also down to earth and a lot of fun. We would absolutely book with Epic again!”
“It was just the two of us but we got the attention made for a large group. We had an excellent ride up the KVR with a beautiful picnic lunch supplied. Tamara and Darcy were our guide and support vehicle and did a great job. Wine tasting is always good.”
“What an amazing trip with Darcy and Tamara and the best way to see the vineyards. We met near town and were straight onto the Kettle Valley Trail. We rode up to Arawana – gentle 2% grade uphill to the lookout and then it was down hill to the first vineyard for tastings and an amazing curated lunch put on by Tamara.”
“We showed up with our bikes and everything else was taken care of – ride nutrition, water even hydration tabs. Fantastic people and service. We will definitely be back for more.”
“If you’re in the area, enjoy bike riding, wine tasting, laughing and a beautiful scenic view – do not miss the opportunity to take this experience!!”

Epic Electric Bike Tour FAQs

Should i tip my bike tour guide.

While not mandatory, tipping is appropriate and our guides certainly appreciate it for a job well done! As in other service-based industries, tipping encourages the outstanding service that our guides continue to provide. Please consider this when planning your monetary needs on the tour.

What time should I arrive for the tour? What if I’m late?

Please arrive no less than 15 minutes in advance of your tour departure so that you have time to sign a waiver form and be fitted for bike and helmet.

Tours start promptly at the time stated. We cannot wait for late guests as this affects the experience of other riders. If you are late, please try calling as we may be able to help you catch up to the group.

Where do the bike tours start and end?

All Cycle City bike tours depart from and return to our shop at 648 Hornby Street .

Do I have to book a bike tour in advance?

Yes, please book a bike tour in advance as space is limited. You can book your desired tour and departure time on our bookings page . If you’d like to join a tour departing in the next 24 hours, please  contact us  directly to see if we can find you a place.

What if it rains on the day of my bike tour?

Our city is located in a Temperate Coastal Rainforest climate, so it does rain here regularly. As Vancouverites, we don’t let “liquid sunshine” keep us from riding and our tours depart rain or shine. You can still have an amazing tour if dressed for the weather, and we provide light ponchos for your use.

Our 24 hour cancellation policy allows you to cancel the day before if the forecast looks bad.  Tour guests can now also pay an additional 7% fee to extend the cancellation policy to 1 Hr before departure for those that prefer to make a last minute decision.

Please Note: June, July, August and September are typically the driest months of the year, but it is wise to bring along an extra layer just in case the forecast indicates a chance of rain ( local forecast ).

What is your cancellation policy?

You can cancel your booking for a full refund with minimum 24 hours notice before your departure time. Due to limited space on our public tours, no refund is possible within 24 hours of tour departure. Read our cancellation policy for more details.

Please Note: We may be able to reschedule your booking if unforeseen circumstances arise. This is based on tour availability.

Still not sure if this tour is right for you?

Cycling star Evenepoel targets June return from crash ahead of Tour de France and Paris Olympics

  • Copy Link copied

BRUSSELS (AP) — Two weeks after crashing heavily in Spain, two-time world champion Remco Evenepoel said on Friday he’s on track to race again in June ahead of the Tour de France and Paris Olympics.

The Belgian needed surgery after breaking a collar bone and shoulder blade in a crash while descending in the Tour of Basque Country.

Evenepoel will train at high altitude before a planned return to racing at the Critérium du Dauphiné in France from June 2-9 or the week after at the Tour de Suisse, he said in an interview broadcast by his team Soudal–Quick-Step.

He won the worlds time trial last year and the road race in 2022, and should target both Olympic events on the streets of Paris on back-to-back Saturdays — July 27 and Aug. 3. First, he will make his Tour de France debut on June 29.

“It’s going to be something special. Especially the Tour,” Evenepoel said. “It makes it a bit easier to do Tour-Olympics because it’s in the same country, not too far like it was three years ago to go to Tokyo. That was more difficult for a lot of guys.”

Evenepoel raced in both Olympic road events in Japan. He placed ninth in the time trial, more than one minute out of the medals and trailing 2 minutes, 17 seconds behind gold medalist Primož Roglič.

Roglič was caught up in Evenepoel’s crash in Spain and also will miss the one-day classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège on Sunday. Evenepoel won the past two editions of the storied race.

Evenepoel said the early spring injury gave him time to recover like it was a midseason break. It let him spend the Eid al-Fitr holiday last week with his wife Oumi Rayane and her family.

“That was a very beautiful day,” he said. “It’s better to have the injury now than in a couple of weeks. It’s a bit of luck in my bad luck.”
