The Ride So Far

Dainese TRQ-Tour Gore-Tex boots review

With my old motorcycle touring boots showing signs of impending disintegration, I went on the search this year for a pair of boots that checked all my boxes. I found it was harder than I thought.

Having worn the TRQ-Tour boots for a few months now, I’ve gathered enough information to be able to recommend them without reservations. So let’s dive into the details.

Construction and protection

The TRQ-Tour boots are made of real leather and Dainese’s D-Stone material, which is a stretchy but abrasion-resistant nylon that’s also used in other Dainese riding gear. Protection comes from additional plastic pieces on the shin, over the ankle and around the heel. The heel counter and heel cup feel particularly protective.

What really separates the TRQ-Tour from other street boots is the D-Axial system, which is a hinged connection of the hard shin plate and heel cup. The purpose is to prevent your ankle from twisting or bending too far. Bobby Buchsbaum, RevZilla’s showroom gear expert, says the TRQ-Tour boots practically sell themselves. He just takes any other street boot, holds the sole in one hand and the top of the boot in the other, and twists in all directions. Then he tries the same with the TRQ-Tour. The D-Axial system will let your ankle move in a normal range of motion, but resists hyperextension or sideways movement.

The bottom line is that these were the most protective street boots I could find without toe sliders. To me, toe sliders are the feature that divides race boots from street boots, track from street. Off-road boots are also protective, but not particularly comfortable for walking around off the bike. So the Dainese TRQ-Tour boots were about the only candidate I could find that hit my sweet spot of comfort and protection.

There’s no mistaking that these are motorcycle boots, but they don’t stand out with garish colors or bulky toe sliders.

Some people make a big deal about buying boots (or other motorcycle gear) that don’t look like motorcycle boots. Personally, that’s not a big issue for me. I am not ashamed to let people know I arrived on a motorcycle. If I get curious looks, fine. It’s an opportunity for education.

While it’s clear at a glance that these are motorcycle boots, because of the obvious gear shift pads on the toes, they still look pretty good. The D-Axial system mostly disappears if pants are worn over the boots. They won’t set any fashion trends, but the TRQ-Tour boots don’t look unduly clunky or odd, to my eyes.

Comfort and weather protection

With boots, getting more protection sometimes means sacrificing comfort. Ankle protection can press against bones when walking, which quickly becomes painful. Stiff, protective features can make walking a chore. Given their level of protection, I find the TRQ-Tour boots to be quite comfortable. The stretchiness of the D-Stone material helps. I do recommend trying them on before buying, if possible, because everyone’s ankle bones are different shapes, and boots that cup my ankles comfortably may grate on yours. (If you buy online from RevZilla , returns are free.)

One of the main selling points of the TRQ-Tour boots, of course, is the Gore-Tex liner. Just about all the motorcycle gear manufacturers have their own proprietary waterproof and breathable membranes these days, but the consensus remains that Gore-Tex is still the most breathable. It’s also more expensive.

Unfortunately, I got these boots too late in the year to discover how they breathe on a 90-degree-plus day. I expect them to be as good as any waterproof boot, because of the Gore-Tex.

Testing the Dainese TRQ-Tour Gore-Tex boots for waterproofness.

I did test them for waterproofness, both in some rain on the bike and by sitting with my left foot in a tub of water for 20 minutes or so. No surprise: Not a drop of water got in. Also, unlike some boots, the Gore-Tex liner comes all the way to the top, so even if you step in a puddle, water won’t leak in, unless it’s deeper than 11.5 inches (the approximate height of the boot).

Micro perforations are intended to improve breathability.

One other little feature worth mentioning. These boots have tiny perforations, seen in the photo at the right, across the top of the foot. These are not meant to flow air for cooling. They are intended to improve breathability by letting moisture escape once it moves through the Gore-Tex liner. Another nice touch by Dainese.

Notes on fit

I wear shoes and boots in U.S. sizes 10 or 10.5. My Alpinestars SMX-5 road race boots are a size 43 and fit me nice and snugly for days at the track, and I have a pair of size 45 Sidi boots that are a bit loose on me. I intentionally bought them that way to allow for thicker socks in cold-weather riding. I first tried a 43 in the Dainese, but it was too small. I went up to a 44 and the fit is comfortably snug, which inspires confidence that the boot will be protective in a crash. I would have trouble wearing my thickest socks with these boots in that size, however.

My feet are average width, and again, the fit is comfortably snug. So, my advice on sizing: If you have wide feet, be sure to try these on before buying, and if you are between sizes, go up one.

Fit issues aren’t limited to the feet, either, and here Dainese has incorporated a smart and useful feature into the TRQ-Tour. I have chicken legs, but some guys have linebacker calves. Both of us are expected to fit into the same boots. Dainese addressed this by incorporating adjustability into the calf area. Hook-and-loop connections on both sides of the rear zipper allow you to make the boot opening larger or smaller. It’s a smart arrangement because you set it once and then use the zipper to get in and out of the boot.

The adjustability also allows you to address the one minor and unexpected drawback I encountered in the comfort department. The D-Axial system makes the use of a rear zipper, instead of a side zipper, nearly a necessity. The gusset behind the zipper keeps the boot fully waterproof, but the fold of material it creates, when the boot is zipped up, rubbed against the back of my calf when walking. I was able to eliminate this by adjusting the size of the boot opening.

The ability to adjust the size of the boot’s opening is a nice feature.

One final tip: If you’re like me and are used to side zippers, be sure to lean your leg forward when putting on the boot. That lets the zipper close smoothly and easily.

Bottom line

At a little under $300, the TRQ-Tour boots are not cheap, which is probably why you’ve read this far and are doing significant research before buying. For Gore-Tex boots, they’re in the ballpark, price-wise, however.

If you want waterproof and breathable street and touring motorcycle boots that provide a high level of protection, but stop short of including race-level features such as toe sliders, internal lacing systems and other complicating factors, the Dainese TRQ-Tour Gore-Tex boots are one of surprisingly few options. And based on my experience, if the fit is right, you won’t go wrong with these boots.

Dainese TRQ Gore-Tex Motorcycle Boots Review

These boots were built for sports touring or commuting. They are a three-season boot, nice and warm in the winter, but can be a little sticky and toasty due to the Gore-Tex membrane if your summer days are brutal. The boots are waterproof and breathable, utilizing the Dainese D-Axial system to protect your feet from twisting in an accident. The boots are also CE Cat II certified.

The boots are well made and do a great job of representing the Dainese name. The materials used are first-class and the boots come with some nice innovative features to boot , no pun intended 🙂

The boots have high-grip TPU and magnesium inserts on the outside of the boot. Nylon is used to protect the heel, toe, and inner shell. These boots are tough! The boots utilize the Dainese D-Axial system to protect your ankles and stop the torsional twisting of the ankle that can happen in an accident, this is an excellent feature.  Fortunately, I haven’t had the pleasure of testing this feature, but it’s comforting to know my feet are well protected.  The downside of all this protection is I personally found the boots a little uncomfortable when walking for a decent distance off the bike.  That said, don’t let that put you off, they are fine for riding, just skip the hiking and sprinting if you can.

The boots are nice and comfortable when riding and for short walks. The design means they are very stiff in the toe area, so no break-in I’m afraid, so make sure you size them correctly. In my experience, Dainese boots size a little small, so best to get a pair and try them on.

Are the boots waterproof?

Yes, they are! The Gore-Tex membrane works great, no issues, no soggy socks, and feet are kept nice and dry in the rain.  Mine are still nice and waterproof after 4yrs of use. If you are riding in Arizona-type weather, with little rain day in, and day out, I would go with a different boot, as the Gore-Tex membrane can make your feet a little sweaty and sticky when riding in very hot climates.

Are these boots good for walking around?

To be honest, not really. Better off taking a pair of comfortable shoes if you plan on doing a lot of walking. The boots are a little stiff and the soles are also very smooth, so might be an issue on some surfaces, especially when wet.

Can you wear them with jeans?

Not a problem, jeans, riding pants, all should be ok. The upper opening is pretty slim when the boot is zipped up.

Let’s talk about Zippers!

The only thing I have changed on my boots is adding zipper tabs. This makes zipping up the boots a lot easier and ideally should have been added by Dainese out of the box. Also, make sure you zip them all the way up and lock them as if they are not locked, they may ride down a little when you are riding.

Standard Zipper

As I have said, the boots are very well made, the only “potential” could be the zippers over the long term. Right now mine are fine, but I just get the feeling these will let go before any other part of the boot. I could be wrong, time will tell.

This video from Revzilla gives a good overview of the boots.

Dainese has sold thousands of pairs of these boots and for good reason. Online it gets pretty much 4.5 to 5 star reviews across the board. The bottom line, it’s a great boot! I have had my boots for years and they are still looking and feeling great on my feet. Still waterproof and the shift pads are still in good condition.  Although they have been replaced by a pair of Daytona Road Star’s in recent months, I still slip them on now and again, when I want that Storm Trooper look.

Dainese TRQ-Tour Gore-Tex Boots

  • Add to quote

Picked up a pair of these this weekend. Will add to this post as I use these boots more. Initial impressions are good. There is some room in the heel that causes my foot to lift up when taking a step, but I've noticed this with most boots I try on...so clearly I'm the problem there. This is probably solved with one of those custom insoles so I'm looking into that. Feel in the toe area is good. Solid, but not hard and plasticky like a lot of street and track boots, but not super-soft or padded either. A nice middle ground. Walkability is medium at the moment (again, these are fresh out of the box), but this might change with break-in. Admittedly, there is some discomfort with the shin guards. Not sure the cause, but it might necessitate the purchase of some stupid pricey padded socks to alleviate...or it might be a matter of just breaking the boots in, or I may just have the velro on too tight. One thing that's kind of cool about these guys: Dainese hid a reflector behind the perforations on the side of the boot. Not entirely sure how functional it is...but A for effort. So far, on their first day of wear, the boots score an 85% with room to improve. Will post more as I use them....including pics for what they're worth. Updated to add pics I thought went through with the original post.

:whtfu: NO PIC!

What is the upper made out of? It looks like cloth of some kind.

doesnt really say. looks like neoprene or something to me:dunno http://stores.sportbiketrackgear.com/Detail.bok?no=9044

Don't look like it would crash very well!

nope and if that is neoprene gortex i bet it makes your feet sweat like crazy eventhough it says breathable.

Nope, not neoprene. I'm guessing gore-tex. Also it has no toe slider, so not necessarily good for the track or canyon carving, but better for freeway rides and/or long distance stuff. But I knew that going in when I got them. I have separate track and canyon boots. FYI feet aren't overheating at all in these. Quite satisfied in that area.

does it feel like theyll break in and have more ankle movement?

I'm not noticing any issues with ankle movement.

Okay, so...update: The boots are breaking in reasonably well. No discomfort in the soul, walking comfort is good for sport (if not track) boots. One issue I'm coming up with is the shin guards. Wearing for an extended period (1 hour or more) is leaving red marks on my shins (see attached pics for a rare glimpse of my pasty-white legs if you dare). This seems to be solved by wearing long socks...but I mean LONG socks. Medium length that cover the shin seem to ride down and expose the shin to the guard, causing discomfort and the marks on the shins. Maybe it's just a matter of breaking the boot in further, or always wearing socks that rise up to below the knee. I'm going to say that, if after three weeks of normal wear, this is still happening, then it is a definite (and undocumented as far as my research went) flaw in the design of the boot.

Hair Eyebrow Skin Forehead Eye

Alright, so, knee high padded socks have solved the chafing problem 100%. The boot is breaking in nicely. I'm quite happy. So word of advice, if you are considering this boot, you must be prepared to wear knee-high padded socks (or at list medium to thick knee-high socks). Since I live in socal...I haven't had much of an opportunity to get the boots wet apart from deliberately walking through puddles and even that doesn't get my feet wet in converse. Who knows? Maybe I'll go for a walk in bath tub or something.

Footwear Leg Shoe Ankle Human leg

So I took the boots for a spin with the padded socks for the first time today (Smartwool PHD ski socks btw). Together they are absolutely superb on the bike. I can't recommend this combination enough. Temperature? Perfect. Feel? Perfect. Movement? Perfect. I am exceptionally happy with these boots. Again, I wouldn't use them on the track or serious canyon carving for lack of toe guards, but for everything else, you can't go wrong. Just remember, you MUST purchase knee-high socks with padded shins.

Knee high SIDI Socks is always worn with my boots! Makes them very comfortable. A must.:fact

As an update, I found myself slogging through snow (in the middle of April in SoCal no less) in Paradise Valley, CA. The boots performed as expected, although I felt traction was better than expected even though these do not have a knobby sole by any means. When I stopped moving, the cold came through, but to be fair, I wasn't wearing socks that were cut out for 37 degree weather (didn't realize this was where my group was going to be riding when I left the house that morning). As long as I was moving though, they were fine.
