What’s the best time to visit Uppsala?

As is true for all cities in Sweden, the best time to visit Uppsala is in the warm summer months. From May until August, the summer days are long (up to 20 hours of daylight), and the temperatures are moderate. Swedes and tourists are out in full force during this period after usually long and brutal winters. The longest day of the year is Midsummer, usually in the latter half of June, and is arguably the most celebrated holiday in the country.

– Uppsala Cathedral is the final resting place of Gustav Vasa, the father of modern-day Sweden.

Café Linné is a great place to start for your first and most important meal of the day. The décor inside is especially cozy and they always have a large assortment of cakes available to try. They also serve breakfast all day during the week, so if this is your favorite meal regardless of the time, make sure you drop by.

Stadsparken

This place has an abundance of green spaces, which is a common feature of all Swedish cities. The biggest is Stadsparken, located in the heart of Uppsala and along the Fyris river.

This is a common gathering place at all times of the day, especially when the weather is perfect. The grounds around this area are always incredibly well maintained.

Svandammen is a small lake close to Stadsparken that hosts a large flock of ducks. They seem to never go hungry as you can always find people feeding them no matter when you arrive. In the wintertime, this lake is converted into an ice-skating rink, free and open to the public!

Gustavianum

This exhibition center is the Uppsala University Museum, featuring archaeological and medical artifacts reflecting research at the University over the centuries. It is most known for its Anatomical Theater, the second-oldest in the world, built back in the 1660s.

Lunch at Stationen

Literally translated as ‘The Station”, this restaurant/bar/café is located right on the train tracks of Uppsala Central Station. They have a great selection of food and outside tables, perfect for people watching during summer. On colder days, you can opt for a table in the back room, which is right next to the train tracks.

Gotlandsparken

This small park area is situated right on the Fyris river and offers stunning panoramic views of the city skyline, with the main attraction being Uppsala Cathedral. This is perfect for any time of day, but is least populated during working hours and therefore more enjoyable.

Fika at Güntherska Hovkonditori & Schweizeri

A ‘fika’ is a Swedish institution. It is merely the act of grabbing coffee and taking a break with friends and/or colleagues, typically in the afternoons. Güntherska is hands down the best place in the city to partake in this daily tradition. This bakery has won countless awards for its food, from ice cream to cardamom buns (another Swedish pastry), to a salmon bagel and other Swedish treats.

Uppsala Cathedral

It’s impossible to be in Uppsala for an hour without seeing this towering cathedral from afar. It is the resting place of Gustav Vasa, the father of modern Sweden. The Lutheran church is the seat of the Archbishop of Uppsala and was built in a French Gothic style starting in 1272.

It is the tallest church in all of Scandinavia, coming in at 118.7 meters tall. Carl Linnaeus’s final resting place is also within the cathedral, or ‘domkyrka’ as they say in Swedish.

Linneanum is situated just across from Uppsala Castle and features a well-manicured botanical garden. King Gustav III donated money to the University of Uppsala in 1787 for the building’s construction which functioned as an orangery at the time but is currently a Greenhouse.

The site is dedicated to the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus who got his higher education at the University. Walking along these grounds gives such a calming influence and there is so much to discover at this rather small site.

Dinner at 60 Kvadrat

This restaurant, as the name suggests, is 60 square meters and offers mostly Scandinavian-inspired dishes. The menu is small which allows the chef to focus on just a few dishes, perfecting each one. It is currently ranked the #1 restaurant in the city and is a stone’s throw away from the Fyris river.

Sunset at Uppsala Castle

How many castles have you seen in your life that are colored pink? There aren’t that many but one is Uppsala Castle. Located at the highest point in the city, the castle (or ‘slott’ in Swedish) was built in 1549. It has been the linchpin of Swedish policy that has propelled the country to the status of great European power; various declarations of war and royal abdications have been announced at this place. The castle was damaged by fire in 1702 and subsequently restored many years later. Special castle tours take you onto the roof of the castle, giving you a great bird-eye view over Uppsala (book in advance).

Drinks at Miss Voon

After a day of sightseeing in Uppsala, there is no better place for fancy cocktails than at Miss Voon, situated on the top floor of Elite Hotel Academia next to the train station. It is a posh, swanky place so dress up and take in the views of Uppsala as night descends upon the city.

The capital of Sweden and just a short train ride away from Uppsala. Situated across a 14-island archipelago, Stockholm is home to roughly ¼ of the Swedish population. From sights like the Royal Castle in Gamla Stan, viewpoints at Monteliusvägen and Skinnarviksberget, and museums like Fotografiska and the Vasamuseet, there is plenty to do during your one day in Stockholm that may leave you wanting to stay for more than just a day.

Skokloster Castle

This Swedish castle built in the Baroque style is located on Lake Mälaren, situated between Stockholm and Uppsala. It was built in the mid-1600s and is currently a state-owned museum with a collection of paintings and old relics of the past. You can get there by boat departing from the Uppsala city center in the summertime.

You can tour this exquisite castle and enjoy its gardens and architecture while being guided by an actual member of the von Ehrenheim family which lives here and manages the property. How cool is that? Additionally, there are some great hiking places nearby, so this can actually be quite an active day out.

Sigtuna is known as Sweden’s first town and as such is quite an attraction for tourists. It’s just half an hour away from Uppsala, but it’s a great destination for a day trip because there is so much to see. Runestones, old churches, and fascinating ruins provide ample sightseeing opportunities, and the town itself is incredibly charming. An ideal place to just take it easy, buy some souvenirs and just explore at your own pace.

– The holiday of Valborg occurs on April 30 th every year in Sweden. Uppsala, with its large student population, has one of the biggest celebrations in the country. Every year, groups of students (most studying engineering) are chosen to construct a rudimentary raft they must commandeer to row down the Fyris river with. Needless to say, this serves as excellent entertainment for those attending as most of the rafts seem to spontaneously disassemble in the course of minutes, much to everyone’s delight.

– Bandy is one of those sports that is native to Sweden. Think of it as a sport where the players wear gear similar to ice hockey, on a rink the size of a football field, trying to hit a small orange-colored ball, into nets the size of a car. Every year at Studenternas, the largest rink complex in Uppsala, the Bandy finals are played between the top two teams in Sweden. The event is outdoors and is quite the spectacle and quintessentially Swedish.

Nestled on the eastern coast of Sweden, Uppsala is a city that blends a modern-day vibrancy, thanks to its world-class university, with ancient Norse mythology and magnificent gothic architecture. Just one hour from Stockholm, taking an Uppsala day trip is the perfect way to immerse yourself in Swedish culture.

Uppsala is home to endless historical buildings, museums and even ancient burial grounds and ruins. Dominating the skyline of Sweden’s fourth largest city, the Uppsala Cathedral is a sight to behold, an architectural marvel dating back to the 13th century.

The city’s charm extends to its botanical gardens, vibrant flora lining the picturesque Fyris River, flanked by interconnected parks and walkways. Modern galleries, theatres and music venues are dotted around the city, offering a contemporary contrast to Uppsala’s mediaeval roots.

Getting from Stockholm to Uppsala

Taking an organised tour is an excellent way to discover the historical tales and ancient viking sites in Uppsala and surrounding villages. This way, all of the planning is taken care of, simply board the tour bus with a local expert directly from your hotel.

Both this guided day tour and this full-day tour from Stockholm are excellent options if you don’t want to travel to Uppsala independently.

Both guided tours offer stop-offs at other significant sites along the route such as the runes at JarlaBanke Bridge, Vallentuna church and one of Sweden’s oldest towns, Sigtuna.

After a morning of weaving through the Swedish countryside, you’ll then have time to explore Uppsala. Here you will visit Viking burial grounds, the Gothic 13th-century cathedral and one of Europe’s oldest academic institutions, the Uppsala University, before heading back to Stockholm .

There is also the option to take a private tour that visits both Sigtuna and Uppsala.

Taking a self-guided day trip to Uppsala from Stockholm is incredibly straightforward thanks to the convenient rail connection. Trains to Uppsala depart from Stockholm Central Train Station every 15 minutes or so, running from 5am to midnight.

There are several services operating on this route so journey times and price may fluctuate. To make sure you are getting the best price and the fastest train, it’s best to pre-book your ticket. You can view schedules here.

The fastest trains take just over 30 minutes but the slower, regional trains can take up to an hour, prices start from 75 SEK which converts to just under £6.

The bus from Stockholm to Uppsala is slightly cheaper than the train but there are a few downsides to consider.

Buses from Stockholm typically depart from the central bus station, Cityterminalen, located near Stockholm Central Station. From there, the journey is between 1-1.5 hours long.

This is slightly longer than the train service but the overall ticket price is a little cheaper so if you are on a tight budget, you may prefer to take the bus.

When comparing the bus and train services, it’s also important to consider the timetables. If you want to spend your evening in Uppsala, visit the theatre or go out for dinner, the trains offer more services throughout the night. You can view bus schedules here.

By choosing to travel by car, you will have more freedom to explore en route. There are plenty of small towns and villages along the way, some with especially interesting historical sites connected to the Vikings. This is a great opportunity if you want to visit Sigtuna and Uppsala in a single day.

The journey from Stockholm to Uppsala by car takes around 1 hour, depending on traffic. It is relatively straightforward, with most of the journey taking place on the E4 motorway.

There are, however, a few things to note if you decide to either bring your own car or hire a car whilst in Sweden. Several roads and bridges have automated toll cameras, these capture your registration details and send a bill to your vehicle’s registered address a couple of weeks after your trip.

If you are doing a lot of driving in Sweden or Norway , it’s best to register for an E-Pass , this way you pay the charges automatically and there is no added admin fee on your bill. Some hire companies cover this additional charge but it’s worth checking when you hire a car.

There are also three separate low-emission zones in place around Stockholm. Your vehicle must be EURO6 or above to drive in and out of the city without risking a fine. This is another thing worth checking when you hire a car. You can browse Rentalcars.com to compare prices on rental cars.

Depending on when you are visiting Sweden, the weather conditions can affect the road conditions. During the winter months, it is likely you will encounter snow and ice so if you are not a confident driver, it may be best to stick to public transport.

Uppsala Day Trip Itinerary

It would be impossible to write a Uppsala itinerary without mentioning the incredible Swedish bakeries. There is no better way to start your day.

There are many options for coffee and a traditional Swedish pastry such as the cinnamon bun (kanelbullar), or the cardamom bun (kardemummabullar) but, if you want to sit beside the river and enjoy one of the best in the city, Güntherska is an excellent choice.

Uppsala Cathedral

You can’t miss it, the Uppsala Cathedral is the most prominent part of the city’s skyline. It is the tallest church building not only in Sweden, but in the whole of Scandinavia, its three soaring spires reaching 118m into the sky.

Dating back to the 13th century this gothic cathedral is full of historical insights to the city of Uppsala. Inside, the cathedral houses ornate chapels and the tombs of Swedish royalty, including King Gustav Vasa and John III.

Discover the intricate stained glass windows and the mediaeval astronomical clock as you wander around the halls and head up to the tower to experience the best views across the city.

Entry to the cathedral is free but donations towards the upkeep are recommended.

Gustavianum Museum

Gustavianum, located at the Uppsala University, is a small museum with a large range of exhibits. Housed in a grand 17th-century building, it displays a fascinating collection of exhibits ranging from ancient artefacts to scientific marvels.

Uppsala University is over 500 years old, making it one of the oldest academic campuses in the world. Wander around the grounds, before heading inside the museum to discover the Augsburg Art Cabinet, a unique Renaissance treasure and an ancient anatomical theatre that provides insights into historical medical practices.

Explore the museum’s archaeological and cultural displays, including Viking relics and Egyptian mummies. The museum itself is not very big so allocating one hour would be plenty.

At the moment, the museum is closed for refurbishment but will reopen in June 2024.

Botanical Gardens

After discovering the Gustavianum Museum, it’s the perfect time to take a stroll through the University Botanical Gardens.

This is no regular walk in the park, spanning 34 acres, this botanical oasis is a living testament to biodiversity, featuring over 11,000 plant species, lovely little hills and beautiful lakes and ponds.

The path alongside the Fyris River weaves through separate thematic sections like the Linnaeanum and the Japanese Garden, transporting you through diverse ecosystems along the way. There is a rainforest area, orchid room, the orangery and an area where you will find a range of alpine plants.

It is open all year round, with different areas blooming at different times of year. If you are visiting during the winter time, make sure to visit the orangery. The trees are in full bloom and the smell is incredible. This is a botanical enthusiast’s dream destination.

Gamla Uppsala

Gamla Uppsala is the ancient heart of Uppsala, a truly mesmerising archaeological and historical site that resonates with Nordic mythology. Rolling green landscapes peppered with burial mounds, this sacred area served as a major religious centre during the Viking Age.

Back in mediaeval times, Scandinavians considered Gamla Uppsala to be one of the most significant locations in the entirety of Scandinavia.

It is said that there were once over 2,500 burial mounds in Gamla Uppsala but over the passage of time, many of them have become part of the surrounding farmland. Among the 250 that remain, there are three primary burial mounds.

Often referred to as the ‘Royal Mounds’ they are closely associated with three semi-legendary kings from the House of Ynglings – Aun, Adils and Egil. These gigantic mounds are iconic symbols of Sweden and can be found in texts and images all over the world.

The adjacent Gamla Uppsala Museum delves into the area’s rich history, displaying ancient artefacts and shedding light on the rituals and customs found in Norse mythology.

On site you will also find the Gamla Uppsala Church, dating back to the 12th century. This perfectly preserved Lutheran church is built using stone, separate from the bell tower which is adorned with a distinctive red façade and traditional Scandinavian wooden architecture.

Its interior features a blend of mediaeval and Baroque elements, including an elaborately decorated altarpiece.

Uppsala Castle

One of the best ways to see a city is from above. Standing proud, towering over the city is Uppsala Castle. Constructed in the 16th century, the castle blends Renaissance and Gustavian architecture, showcasing an impressive facade and towers.

Once a royal residence, it played a vital role in Sweden’s history, witnessing royal gatherings and political events.

Although the castle itself is private and is not open to the general public, the grounds can be visited for free and the panoramic views of the city and the surrounding countryside are well worth the extra walk.

After spending one day in Uppsala, you are sure to have built up an appetite. Swedish cuisine is not something we hear about too often but their pride in local, sustainable ingredients is unmatched. Here it is not uncommon for families to head out to the woods to pick mushrooms and berries on the weekend.

In fact, Uppsala boasts a diverse culinary scene, offering a mix of traditional Swedish dishes, international cuisine, and fine dining options. Staple dishes include köttbullar (meatballs) served with lingonberry sauce, gravlax (cured salmon), and pickled herring.

Potatoes, dill, and fresh berries often feature prominently. You could also order a ‘Smorgasbord’, which is an array of cold and hot dishes, from cured meats to seafood.

Peppar Peppar is one of the best restaurants in the city to discover local cuisine, executed brilliantly. If you prefer seafood, Hambergs Fisk is an excellent choice, here you will find some of Sweden’s world-famous seafood. You can even buy some to take away with you from the in-house fishmonger.

Uppsala is a city committed to showcasing the arts. With its welcoming atmosphere, it’s easy to immerse yourself in local entertainment whether that be watching a theatre performance, going to a summer festival in the park or music gigs.

The city’s theatres, such as Uppsala Stadsteater and Slottsteatern, host performances throughout the year, ranging from drama to contemporary productions. Live music enthusiasts can explore venues like Katalin and Ordfestivalen, to discover local and international artists across several different genres.

During the summer, there are several festivals in Uppsala’s events calendar. One of the most famous is the Reggae Festival, Scandinavia’s first and largest festival dedicated to reggae music.

There is also an annual film festival, Valborg celebrations (an annual event popular in the city where locals light large fires to scare away bad spirits.) and Kultrunattun (a celebration of Uppsala’s unique heritage held on the second Saturday of September since 1989).

A very charming place to visit, the small town of Sigtuna can be reached in just 45 minutes from Uppsala. Although it’s now hard to imagine, it once acted as Sweden’s capital from the 10 to the 13th centuries.

Very peaceful and picturesque, its old stone ruins, small medieval churches and quaint main street (the oldest in the country) lie along the shores of Lake Malaren. An important, early Christian center, it competed with the, then pagan, Uppsala for religious supremacy. It also replaced Birka as a trade hub and hosted the first royal mint.

Aside from seeing St. Olof’s crumbling church ruins and Viking Age graves and runestones, there are loads of lovely little art shops and cafes to stop by. You can also explore its small, local history museum or walk, cycle and fish by the lake in summer.

Back in Uppsala is the brilliant Biotopia; an interactive museum focusing on the animals and ecosystems found in the county. Located just a ten minute walk from the city center, its two floors have tons of incredibly-detailed dioramas and displays to check out.

Set in a small park, the museum’s grand, turn-of-the-century building first opened its doors to the public in 1910. Created by Gustav Golthoff, a well-known naturalist and taxidermist, its impressive displays feature all kinds of stuffed animals in their natural habitat.

On the opposite side of the river to the university area are the Linnaeus Garden & Museum. Named after the world-famous botanist who lived, worked and taught in Uppsala, its scenic site offers more of an insight into his personal and professional life.

Now home to 1,300 species of plants, flowers, trees and shrubs, Sweden’s oldest botanical garden was first established in 1655. A century later, Carl Linnaeus took over with its layout, orangerie and ingenious classification system still looking largely as he left it today. A treat to amble around, its lush grounds also contain some stunning statues and a pond.

Alongside the garden he so carefully cultivated, is the large house where he lived from 1743 to 1778. Full of original objects and furniture, the museum presents both his family life and scientific achievements. While it is open all year, the garden can only be visited by the public between May and September.

Another great museum to explore is the Gustavianum right in front of the city’s iconic Gothic cathedral. A firm favorite with families, it covers not just the history of Uppsala University but has amazing Egyptian antiquities and Viking Age artefacts for you to see too.

Built back in 1625 to house lectures and students, it later served as the main building of the university before being turned into a museum in 1997. As summer usually starts around the middle of May and lasts up until late September, these are by far the best months to visit Uppsala. That doesn’t stop events like the Uppsala Reggae Festival from being a blast however!

The start of the new semester in autumn and endless concerts and exhibits for Kulturnatten create a vibrant feel around town. This is despite the days shortening and sun shining less.

As temperatures average just -2 to 3°C (28-37°F), the dark days of November to March see relatively few people visit. Some lovely Christmas lights do brighten up its center though.

In April, one of its biggest events, the Valborg, is held to celebrate the arrival of spring. Big bonfires, river rafting competitions and music concerts all take place!

Where to Stay in Uppsala

As most of Uppsala’s main attractions lie right in the city center, this is by far the best area to base yourself. You can easily walk from one to the other, or even to the train station, if you want to take trips to other cities.

An excellent option for a convenient and comfortable stay is the four-star, family-run Grand Hotell Hörnan . Overlooking the Fyris River, the historic hotel has a very charming feel with a classy bar area found downstairs. Many of its tastefully-furnished rooms also boast views of the cathedral and castle. There is also an extensive breakfast buffet for guests to enjoy.

Just a short walk from the station is the Clarion Collection Hotel . A great alternative, it has clean and comfortable rooms to stay in featuring a sleek, modern Swedish decor. As well as a lovely bar and outside area, it has a sauna and fitness rooms for visitors to make use of. What’s more, both a breakfast and dinner buffet are included in the price with afternoon tea or ‘fika’ also part of the deal.

How to get there

Conveniently located, Uppsala lies a 40-minute train ride to the northwest of the capital or just 20 minutes from its international Stockholm Arlanda Airport. Trains depart every half an hour between the two cities.

By car, the journey is roughly an hour from Stockholm with buses instead taking around 80 minutes. While cheaper, its coach services run much less frequently.

Once you arrive, most of its main sights are within easy walking distance of the center. You will have to drive or take the bus to Gamla Uppsala on its northern outskirts.

Uppsala is all about history and culture, with religion and learning at the core of its nearly 1000-year existence as a Christian center. An ancient castle overlooks the town which has 18 hours of daylight at the time of the summer solstice. With a walk along the historical buildings, a one-day trip to Uppsala is well worth as visitors get transported into a relaxed and leisurely environment.

The Cathedral and the University are situated together while the University library and the Castle are close to each other. The University is the biggest library in Sweden. Within the castle, you can get engrossed in a number of fascinating original museums. The city also has a botanical heritage in the form of Carolus Linnaeus. There are two botanical gardens near the castle.

Outside the city

The ancient settlement that predated the present-day Uppsala lies to the North of the city. You can also reach out to the Stockholm Archipelago from Uppsala with access to the Roslagen region. There is plenty of countryside around the city to make for a pleasant diversion away from history and culture. As you go to North of the city along the river Fyris, you get to see many beautiful locales.

Visitors can enjoy street food at Dylan’s Grill, which is noted for its burgers. The international menu can be sampled at Dryck, while Sherlocks is a pub that has a reputation for its ambiance. When you feel like you want to relax in a café after you have done the rounds of all the sights, you can settle down in Guntherska Hovkonditori & Schweizeri, which has some of the best reviews in entire Uppsala. It is located in the center of the city. Traditional Swedish coffee has a great reputation and Uppsala offers a large number of cafes that are all about relishing both the coffee and the ambiance.

Uppsala winters span the period from late November until the middle of March. Summer begins in the middle of May and goes on until the end of September. Precipitation can be noticed in Uppsala from June to November with a monthly average of about 50 millimeters. In August, rainfall is the highest and reaches close to 75 millimeters. Snow is seen in the period from November to March.

The city can be reached in just a bit more than 35 minutes by train and about 20 minutes by flight. By car, Uppsala is one hour away in the direction of the E4 road. Hotels are available both in modern as well as old-fashioned styles, while hostels are also available.

At 8 o’clock on Saturday morning, Jesper woke me up with the words “ I want to go somewhere for a day trip “.

We thought about it for a while. The city center was out of the question due to the half marathon. We had been talking about Uppsala for quite some time but never actually made it there, so we decided that this would be the day. The thing with Uppsala is that it is really close to Stockholm and it is also one of the most famous cities in the country. Getting there isn’t exactly difficult so don’t ask me why we hadn’t gone there before Saturday.

Day Trip To Uppsala

Getting there.

The most convenient way for us to start our day trip to Uppsala was by taking the commuter train. It is a bit more expensive to go there than normally (approximately 160 SEK return pp), but it is convenient. 25 minutes later we found ourselves at the central station in Uppsala. As it turned out, we were not only lucky with the weather. On Saturday the city celebrated Kulturnatten or a night of culture. This meant that there were a lot of people and music everywhere. The city also smelled deliciously good as there were food trucks and stands on almost every street.

What We Saw

As I have never been to the city, I was positively surprised by all the green parks and the old, narrow streets. Some of the highlights of our day trip included the castle, the cathedral, Museum Gustavianum and the Linnaeus Garden. Because of the cultural festivities, entrance to the museums was free. At Museum Gustavianum we attended a short guided tour about the Vikings and their contacts to the world. The museum is located in Uppsala University’s oldest building and it houses the Anatomical Theater. It might be historically important but I was slightly disturbed when I tried to imagine what had happened in that theater.

The university seemed to be present almost everywhere in the city. The Linnaeus Garden is the oldest botanical garden in Sweden and nowadays it belongs to the university. Today the garden houses approximately 1300 species, all originally cultivated by Linnaeus and arranged according to his own system. I really enjoyed walking in the garden, it’s quite small but it is an oasis in the middle of the city.

Have we told you about fika before? Fika is almost like a cultural institution in Sweden, basically it’s a coffee break with something sweet on the side. During our day trip in Uppsala I probably ate the best cinnamon bun (also typically Swedish) ever. It had blueberry jam filling. And custard! I really want to learn how to make those myself.

Going Again?

Now that we know how easy it is to go to Uppsala, I’m sure that we will visit again. Especially if we know that there will be some events there. It is a typical university town so it is lively. I’m thinking that the Christmas market could be well worth a visit?

Uppsala & Sigtuna

Uppsala and Sigtuna lie just north of Stockholm and make for a perfect day trip or longer stay.

So, what to do and see in the university city of Uppsala? Kick off with a visit to part medieval, part Gothic Uppsala Domkyrka, or Uppsala Cathedral. Inaugurated in 1435, Gothic re-styled in the 19th century, it is a must see/do in Uppsala.

Gamla (Old) Uppsala, just north of the city, boasts impressive 6th century burial mounds and in its museum you can learn about the legend of the Svea kings and gory human sacrifices (kids love this bit). Go here for Gamla Uppsala Museum, Odinsborg restaurant and Disagården open-air museum.

Carl von Linné

Another ‘must’ in Uppsala is Carl von Linné, Sweden’s greatest ever scientist and father of modern taxonomy. He lived and worked in Uppsala in the 18th century and there are museums, gardens, parks etc dedicated to his memory in Uppsala. Go here for absolutely everything Carl von Linné .

If the kids start dragging their feet, hit the nearest café and treat them to a Swedish classic of pancakes with whipped cream and jam. And then let them loose at Fyrishov Water Park. In addition to its historical charms, Uppsala is Sweden’s fourth largest city with a good range of shops, restaurants and cafés.

The town of Sigtuna? Quaint? The place is a complete charm-fest and Sweden’s first town (founded in AD 980).

Sigtuna hugs the northern shores of Lake Mälaren and its cobblestone streets are arteries of the almost 1,000 year-old Stora gatan, or main street, with clusters of shops selling Swedish fashion, design and handicrafts.

For the low down on Sigtuna’s history visit Sigtuna Museum for its brilliant exhibitions and displays. For some ancient Viking detective work, pop into the museum or Tourist Office on Stora gatan and ask or a futhark , or key. This will help you unlock the mysteries of the town’s more than 150 rune stones. Careful how you pronounce futhark though.

Both Uppsala and Sigtuna are year-round destinations and equally as beautiful white clad in winter snow or in the summertime sun.

TRAVEL GUIDE: DAY TRIPS FROM STOCKHOLM: UPPSALA & SIGTUNA

Stockholm is one of Scandinavia’s historic, world-class cities, which is full of things to do for visitors.

If you’re looking to escape to a quieter, more peaceful town or two outside the city limits, I’d recommend a day trip from Stockholm to the charming towns of Uppsala and Sigtuna.

Day Trip from Stockholm to Uppsala, Sweden

Uppsala is a sizable city, which is home to around 180,000 permanent residents.

Its influx of students swells the population, and creates a vibrant small city, which makes it a great day trip from Stockholm.

Uppsala University is the oldest university in all of Scandinavia, and was founded in 1477.

How to get from Stockholm to Uppsala

Uppsala is a quick trip from Stockholm. It’s about 70 kilometers, or about 45 miles from central Stockholm.

The drive is easy (a straight shot north up highway E4), but the train is even easier!

The entire train system in Sweden is very user-friendly. The cost of a ticket from Stockholm’s Central Station to Uppsala is about $10.

You’ll have to check the schedule when you go, but typically the trains leave every half-hour on this popular route.

As soon as you arrive in Uppsala and walk outside the train station, you’ll see more evidence of just how much the Swedish people love bicycling around.

Things to do in Uppsala, Sweden

If you’re making this day trip from Stockholm, don’t rush to get to Uppsala too early!

We found: most shops and restaurants don’t open until later in the morning or midday.

In the summer months, you’ll find a lot of events and activities, but even during the slower fall months, we found plenty to do.

The streets in Uppsala are very pedestrian-friendly. A main thoroughfare branches off into cobblestone side streets, lined with restaurants and stores.

You’ll also notice how clean Uppsala is. We saw several street sanitation crews out tidying things up. Some of the bars and pubs can get a bit rowdy with the student life, but the crews were out erasing any evidence of debauchery from the night before!

The Fyris Riverwalk

The Fyris River runs through Uppsala, before turning into Ekoln Lake south of the city.

The river’s banks are beautiful, and lined with sidewalks and parks.

I loved the bridges along the river, and the flower boxes, spilling over with vines and blooms.

Directly down the hill from Uppsala Castle, you’ll find the riverside park known as Stradstradgarden.

It has beautifully landscaped paths, and features concerts and other events through the year.

Visit Uppsala Castle

Uppsala Castle is a giant pink building, perched on the hill in town.

When we arrived, I assumed it was part of the university.

The castle is home to a salacious and bizarre history.

It dates back to the mid 1500s, and was built by the king known as the “Father of Modern Sweden,” King Gustav Vasa.

Touring the castle, you’ll hear stories of the bloodbaths, conspiracies, and murderous plots which played out here over the centuries.

These days, it’s home to the Uppsala Art Museum .

Uppsala Cathedral

Uppsala Cathedral is both the tallest and the largest cathedral not just in Sweden, but in all of Scandinavia.

Construction on the cathedral began in the year 1270, and it was completed and consecrated more than 150 years later, in 1435.

It was a pretty sight through the early morning fog on our visit:

Uppsala Cathedral was where generations of Swedish kings were coronated.

Honestly, I was surprised to hear that it was built centuries ago. At first glance, the exterior looks almost too new! The cathedral went through a major renovation in the 1970s.

The cathedral is open to visitors daily, from 8am – 6pm, and you can check their website to see what events might be going on when you’re in town.

Great Tours and Guides in Uppsala

Uppsala is full of tour options, many of which focus on the area’s viking history and Uppsala Castle.

I’ve had family members do this in other cities and love it. In Uppsala, you can book your own private photographer, who will know where the best lighting and backdrops will be to take family photos of your visit!

Travel From Uppsala to Sigtuna

You can spend an entire day (or more) in either Uppsala or Sigtuna, but it’s also very manageable to visit both towns on a day trip from Stockholm.

In our case, the weather wasn’t ideal, and the university wasn’t in session, so Uppsala was a bit slow and rainy for us to spend more time in. We were also in a time crunch, and wanted to make sure to see both towns.

Drive From Uppsala to Sigtuna

Driving is very easy. It’s a 30 kilometer drive, or about 20 miles. Highway 255 will take you south from Uppsala to Sigtuna in about half-an-hour.

There’s no need to rent a car for this trip, because the bus system is very easy to use.

Best Bet: Take the Bus From Uppsala to Sigtuna

I love traveling on trains. When it comes to buses, I’m generally less excited.

The bus from Uppsala to Sigtuna was very easy to use, and provided a quick, efficient ride.

The trip first requires a brief train ride from Uppsala down to Marsta Station.

Get on the train in Uppsala heading toward Stockholm, and make sure it makes a stop at Marsta. The train should cost around $7, and take about 20 minutes to get to Marsta.

From Marsta, you’ll get on either the 570 or 575 train toward Sigtuna. The station is really easy to use, and each little bus stop there will have a digital board, listing the buses and when they’ll be arriving or departing (see the photo above).

For me, the best part about the bus system is: no ticket needed! You pay when you board, just by tapping your credit card.

The cost is $1 to ride the bus from Uppsala to Sigtuna!

Day Trip From Stockholm to Sigtuna, Sweden

Sigtuna is widely known as Sweden’s oldest town! It was established 1,000 years ago, and is home to many ancient ruins and viking sites.

Sigtuna much more of a small town, compared to Uppsala. It’s home to just around 9,000 permanent residents.

Whether you’re coming to Sigtuna from Stockholm for the day, or traveling down from Uppsala as part of a two-city day trip, the advice on what to do is the same.

Things to do in Sigtuna

From the bus stop, all of the main sites in Sigtuna are very walkable.

You’ll have your choice of several restaurants along the historic main street, called Stora Gatan, which is mostly lined with stores.

I’ll be honest: it was a bit odd seeing some of the more modern stores lining the main street of Sweden’s oldest town, but the quaint local shops are worth checking out.

There’s a bike shop, where you can rent bikes to explore the area, or ride along Lake Malaren.

Sigtuna is only 10 kilometers from Sweden’s Arlanda International Airport. Its construction helped rejuvenate the town and stabilize its population.

St. Olof is perhaps the most famous site in historic Sigtuna.

It’s the ruins of an 1100 year-old church, named after a Norwegian viking.

This is one of seven stone churches which stood in Sigtuna over the centuries. The ruins of St. Olof and two others remain today.

Ruins of St. Per

The ruins of the Church of St. Per are the surviving walls of a church (named after Saint Peter) which was built in the late 11th Century.

St. Per’s was built in the shape of a cross, with a tower as its central feature.

St. Per’s, which was built mostly of granite, was used for several hundred years, until it was abandoned in the 1500s during The Reformation.

The church fell into ruin, and people in town began taking the stones from its construction to use on their own properties.

In the late 1800s, St. Per’s became a protected monument. It continues to undergo restoration work to keep its remaining walls standing.

A red Bell Tower sits over an ancient viking graveyard on a hill overlooking Sigtuna.

You can hike behind it to search for the old burial mounds.

The site may be historic, but the bell tower is brand new. The old one burned in 2016, and the current tower was built in 2018.

The best way to get to Uppsala by plane is to fly into Arlanda Airport, which is about 30 minutes away by train. There are many airlines that fly into Arlanda, including SAS, Norwegian, and Ryanair.

You can reach Uppsala by car via the E4 motorway. The journey from Stockholm takes about 1 hour, depending on traffic. There is plenty of parking in Uppsala, including several paid parking lots.

You can take a train to Uppsala from Stockholm Central Station. Trains run frequently and the journey takes about 40 minutes. There are also trains that go directly to Uppsala from Arlanda Airport.

There are no direct boat services to Uppsala, but you can take a boat from Stockholm to Uppsala via the picturesque waterways. The journey takes about 2.5 hours and tickets can be purchased online.

The best way to get to Uppsala by bus is to take the Flixbus from Stockholm. The journey takes about 1 hour and buses run frequently throughout the day.

Thanks to their cooperation with local food producers, they are able to offer a selection of products to attract large numbers of foodies.

8 kilometers north of Uppsala is the Ulva Kvarn handicrafts village , known for its beautiful natural surroundings. The village features all sorts of shops, cafés, handicraft studios, and silversmiths. You can even attend a glassblowing workshop at Glashyttan Ulven. There are also events throughout the year, including the autumn and winter markets, handicrafts fairs, and vintage car conventions.

Linnés Sävja - The Linnaeus House

Come and experience the farmhouse that Carl Linnaeus purchased in 1758. It was to this country retreat that Linnaeus would escape to live the “simple life.” Without the distractions of family obligations, he could work on his theories and write new treatises. Today the estate features a rustic farmhouse café, a museum where you can learn more about Linnaeus’ scientific work as a physician, and chickens and lambs to amuse the kids.

Lyssnaängen and Skarholmen

Lyssnaängen is a picturesque spot on the shores of Lake Ekoln with beautiful panoramic views of the water. Here you’ll find a large swimming area with a kiosk, public toilets, and spots for grilling. Take a walk on the trails that run along the shore where you can gaze out at the boats gliding past. Lyssnaängen is also a popular place to go ice skating in the wintertime.

Lennakatten Heritage Railway

Experience what travelling was like back in the early 1900s! Travel by steam locomotive, old-fashioned railcar, or vintage bus along one of Sweden’s most beautiful railroads, the Lenakatten Heritage railway . Sunnersta Recreation Area

The Sunnersta Recreation Area offers hiking trails, lighted paths for nocturnal treks, and mountain bike routes. In the winter there are also slopes for sledding and skiing, complete with a ski lift. Bring your own provisions and cook in the fire pits that are located throughout the park, or warm up at Sunnerstastugan. The area is beautifully situated along the river Fyris.

Fullerö Backar (Fullerö Hills)

At Fullerö Backar (Fullerö Hills) , you can enjoy the picturesque surroundings, the plains of the Uppland region, and the Fyrisån (the river Fyris) that flows by the park. Nearby is Fullerö Handel, a store that offers a wide assortment of furniture, interior design and Swedish ceramics. When you’re done with your shopping, you can enjoy a coffee break or other refreshments, either inside at Café Villan or outside in the charming garden.

Frontier offers 1-day sale: Book $43 round-trip flights only on Earth Day

Celebrate Earth Day in the air with a one-day sale from "America's Greenest Airline."

Frontier Airlines announced that it will celebrate what it says is its status as "America's Greenest Airline" with an Earth Day sale. The airline will offer $43 fares on round-trip domestic flights in the US, plus one-way fares to and from Puerto Rico.

The $43 price tag was chosen to celebrate what Frontier says is its 43% higher fuel efficiency compared to other major U.S. carriers, based on 2023 fuel consumption per seat-mile.

“Our constant dedication to enhancing fuel efficiency and reducing our environmental footprint enables us to maintain our position as America’s Greenest Airline,” said Tyri Squyres, vice president of marketing at Frontier Airlines, in a recent news release.

How long does Frontier's $43 deal last?

Fares must be purchased by 11:59 pm Eastern time on April 22. Sale fares are valid for nonstop travel on Tuesday and Wednesday, through Jun. 30, 2024; and Aug. 15, 2024, through Oct. 31, 2024, except on blackout date Sep. 3, 2024.

What to Know Before Booking a National Park Trip This Summer

Additional routes in popular parks now require reservations, the annual pass gets a big change, Juneteenth is now a new free entrance day and more changes for 2024.

In 2023, the seashores, lakeshores, battlefields, historic sites, monuments and more that make up the National Park Service had 325.5 million visits , an increase of 4 percent from the year before.

The National Park Service director, Charles F. Sams III, praised the surge of interest in “learning our shared American story throughout the hidden gems of the National Parks System.”

Expecting an even greater turnout in 2024, the Park Service and Recreation.gov , the booking platform for federal land reservations, have implemented new measures to streamline the park experience, manage overcrowding and safeguard the environment.

More parks are requiring reservations

To better avoid congested trails, packed parking lots and overflowing trash cans, additional parks are joining Rocky Mountain , Arches and Glacier National Parks this year in requiring day-use permits, timed entries and other reservations for travelers who wish to visit, particularly during peak hours, holidays and the parks’ high seasons. Yosemite National Park is reinstating a timed-entry system it instituted in 2020, but paused in 2022.

Many park enthusiasts expressed mixed feelings about the reservation policies, with some lamenting a lack of first-come, first-served campsites while others find comfort in knowing they have a confirmed booking. As nearly 75 percent of visitors each year descend on national parks from May to October (and often on weekends), park officials stand by the system.

“In some parks, the level of demand is exceeding the capacity for which infrastructure was designed or is outpacing the National Park Service’s ability to sustainably support visitation,” said Kathy Kupper, a public affairs specialist for the service. “This trend is resulting in the need to explore new strategies to protect natural and cultural resources and provide opportunities for safe and meaningful visitor experiences.”

It can be confusing.

New to implementing timed-entry reservations for vehicles is Mount Rainier National Park , in Washington, for its popular Paradise and Sunrise Corridors during certain times in the summer season. Reservations cost $2, are valid for one day and must be purchased along with the park ticket, but do not apply for visitors with wilderness permits or camping or lodge reservations. Similar vehicle reservations are now required for certain periods for viewing the sunrise at Haleakalā National Park in Maui, Hawaii , and driving the Cadillac Summit Road in Maine’s Acadia National Park .

Visitors wishing to hike Old Rag Mountain in Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park must obtain a day-use ticket between March 1 and Nov. 30, and in Zion National Park, in Utah, hikers wishing to visit Angels Landing , the dramatic 1,488-foot-tall rock formation, also need to purchase a permit. Fees range from $1 to $6, in addition to the parks’ entrance fees.

As each destination is managed differently, check the park’s webpage for the type of reservation required. Although most bookings can be made through Recreation.gov, some sites, such as Muir Woods National Monument, use a different system.

New features on Recreation.gov

In 2023, Recreation.gov reported that more than 4 million camping reservations and 2 million timed-entry reservations were booked online, and 1.5 million permits were issued. Some 2.9 million new users signed up for the site. With its expanding user base, the booking platform has added 58 reservable national park locations — including 17 campgrounds — such as Central Avenue Walk-in Sites at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Bluff Hike In Camping in South Carolina’s Congaree National Park.

Recreation.gov has also improved an alerts feature, piloted in July 2023, that can notify users through email or mobile push notifications when a sold-out campsite becomes available. After Recreation.gov notifies you of availability, you must book the campsite yourself online — and quickly, as you’ll be shown how many other people (possibly hundreds) have received the same alert.

While its customer support center and mobile app are still only available in English, Recreation.gov recently introduced a Spanish language translation option. The Park Service partners with Latino Conservation Week , which hosts nationwide hikes and events on environmental education and in-park stewardship, and will celebrate its 10th year in September.

A limit to the annual America the Beautiful pass

The 2024 America the Beautiful pass no longer allows two owners. The annual interagency pass, which costs $80 and covers the entrance fees for more than 2,000 federal recreation sites (of which roughly 100 do not charge for admission year-round), is now marked by a single signature line on the back of the card. The pass owner must show I.D. and be present with any accompanying travelers wishing to access the park with the pass. (Annual passes issued in 2023 will still be valid until their expiration date.) The pass covers all passengers in a vehicle — up to four adults, and children under 16 are admitted free — or up to four cyclists riding together. Active military or veterans and people with permanent disabilities are eligible for a free lifetime pass; 4th grade students may receive a free annual pass; and senior citizens may purchase a $20 annual pass or pay $80 for a lifetime pass.

At the parks, more accessible features, E.V. chargers and new lodging

To better protect against global warming, the Park Service is putting more than $65 million from the Inflation Reduction Act and Great American Outdoors Act into climate mitigation and ecosystem restoration.

Using $15.9 million budgeted for zero-emission vehicle deployment, charging capacity and infrastructure, the Park Service is prioritizing a reduction in carbon emissions, said Mr. Sams, by installing new electric-vehicle charging stations and running electric buses.

An interactive online locator tool created in 2023 shows E.V. charging stations throughout 27 national parks and the type of chargers available. In addition to the tool, every national park page displays alerts on road closures, parking lot capacities, construction work and other incidents.

Mr. Sams also said the Park Service is investing $1.3 billion from the Great American Outdoors Act to improve accessibility features, ranging from a new A.D.A.-compliant visitor center at Morristown National Historic Park in New Jersey to new beach wheelchairs at Sleeping Bear Dunes , Channel Islands and Virgin Islands National Parks . Each destination’s website has an accessibility tab to help visitors plan their trip, and Recreation.gov now has a search filter on its homepage to make it easier to locate accessible accommodations.

New lodging options now available across the country include the Flamingo Lodge , which opened inside Everglades National Park last fall with 24 guest rooms built from repurposed shipping containers. In March, along the southeastern border of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Cataloochee Ranch reopened with 11 renovated cabins and a new restaurant. This spring, the Clubhouse Hotel & Suites will welcome its first guests in Rapid City, S.D., the closest major town to Badlands National Park , and opening in May in Idaho is the Yellowstone Peaks Hotel , a 30-minute-drive from Yellowstone National Park. This fall, California-bound travelers planning a visit to General Sherman, the largest known tree on Earth, might book at AutoCamp Sequoia , just outside Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park .

Also in California: Those who don’t score a highly coveted (and contentious) spot at the newly reopened High Sierra Camps in Yosemite could book Wildhaven Yosemite in Mariposa, which offers more affordable rates, hiking trails and views of the Sierra Nevadas. Reservations for its first season are available beginning May 1.

Celebrating milestones and a new free entrance day

On the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, visitors can pay tribute to African American heritage at over 100 parks , including the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington, D.C., Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument , and the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail . This year also marks 100 years since Indigenous people were recognized as United States citizens. Although many parks have Indigenous programming , Mr. Sams, who is the first Native American to serve as N.P.S. director , suggested visiting Hopewell Cultural Historical Park in Ohio and Whitman Mission Historic National Historic Site in Washington, where he recently brought his daughter.

“In order to celebrate the diversity that makes our country great, we must share the complete story of America, which includes both the successes and challenges encountered on the way to form a more perfect union,” Mr. Sams said.

Juneteenth National Independence Day is the National Park Service’s newest free entrance day . Visitors can also take advantage of free admission on April 20, the first day of National Park Week; Aug. 4, the four-year anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act ; Sept. 28 on National Public Lands Day ; and Nov. 11 for Veterans Day .
