DIY Travel Cord Organizer – An Easy 1-Hour Sewing Project!

Cord organization is always a challenge, isn’t it?! There is just something about those pesky yet all-too-necessary charging/connecting accessories that make them so hard to manage. And with more and more of us (and our families) having phones, watches, tablets, gaming devices and more that often need charging on the go, keeping these cords handy, accessible and tidy can be a bit of a challenge. Whether you’re just heading out for the day or away on a longer trip, you can easily keep all your cords sorted, organized and protected in this simple DIY Travel Cord Organizer!

DIY Travel Cord Organizer

Both the concept and construction of this DIY Travel Cord Organizer could not be easier! Simple elastic straps keep various cords from being tangled and misplaced, and the whole travel case rolls up to keep everything safe yet accessible in whatever tote you’re carrying! And the best part…the whole thing can (likely) be made with items you already have in your craft stash!

DIY Travel Cord Organizer

With completely customizable options (such as size and fabric types), you can make an organizer to coordinate with your luggage or even make several to separate out cords by family member or device. If you’ve got a big family with lots of devices to bring along, consider using different novelty prints (characters, school prints, etc) for each member of the family!

DIY Travel Cord Organizer

This DIY Travel Cord Organizer is a simple project, even for the newest of sewers, and can be accomplished in less than an hour! Here is what you’ll need:

diy cord organizer travel

  • Outer fabric – how much depends on the size of your organizer (1/4 yard of marine vinyl was used here to give the organizer a little more durability)
  • Inside fabric – how much depends on the size of your organizer (this one was lined with a 1/4 yard of basic quilting cotton)
  • .25” elastic – about a yard (in a color that matches your inside fabric)
  • Coordinating thread
  • Coordinating ribbon, cord or decorative elastic – about 1 yard
  • Tools: ruler, rotary cutter/scissors, pins, sewing machine, iron

Start by cutting down both the outside fabric and lining fabric to your desired size and shape. When deciding how big to make your organizer, consider both the length of your cords and how many you want to store; and then be sure to add 1” to both the height and width for seam allowances. The organizer shown here was cut to 10×18” for a finished dimension of 9×17”.

diy cord organizer travel

Next, cut (at least) two pieces of elastic the same length as your fabric pieces (the ones shown here were cut to 18”). Two lengths of elastic were sufficient for the height of this organizer, but you may want to consider adding another strip of elastic if you make your organizer much taller.

diy cord organizer travel

Next, secure the elastic to the RIGHT side of the inside fabric. You can use pins to hold it in place; however, I found basting spray also works great in keeping things, like the elastic here, flat and in place while sewing it down!

diy cord organizer travel

Next, secure the elastic to the inside fabric by sewing small perpendicular lines at regular intervals down the entire length of the elastic. The elastic shown here is sewn about every 1”. You can make the gaps as narrow or as wide as you like, just make sure you can fit cords into them.

diy cord organizer travel

Repeat with all strips of elastic, taking care to space them evenly down the fabric and sewing at the same intervals to essentially make vertical columns.

diy cord organizer travel

With the elastic sewn in place, it’s time to assemble the organizer!

With WRONG sides facing, place the inside and outside fabrics together and pin around the outside. To avoid getting pinholes in the marine vinyl, clips were used instead of pins here. Note that the right side of the organizer is left open (shown below).

diy cord organizer travel

Sew around 3 sides of the rectangle with a 1/2“ seam allowance, leaving one end of the pouch open.

diy cord organizer travel

Before flipping the pouch right-side-out, be sure to clip the corners to reduce bulk. Be careful not to clip through the stitches!

diy cord organizer travel

Next, flip the entire pouch right-side-out through the opening and iron it flat. Fold under the opening edges ½” and press.

diy cord organizer travel

Next, trim two pieces of coordinating ribbon/cord/decorative elastic about 15” each.

diy cord organizer travel

Stack the two pieces of ribbon on top of each other and place them into the open seam at the end of the organizer. Secure the open seam together with the ribbon in between with more pins or clips.

diy cord organizer travel

No matter what fabric you use, but especially if you use a stiff fabric like marine vinyl, you’ll notice the pouch doesn’t lay perfectly flat.

diy cord organizer travel

To close up the final seam AND get the fabrics to lay nice and flat, you will need to top-stitch all the way around the organizer one more time. Be sure to use thread and bobbin colors that coordinate with the fabrics, as these stitches will be visible.

diy cord organizer travel

Here you can see the top stitching along the entire outside perimeter of the organizer…

diy cord organizer travel

Not only does top-stitching make it look more professional, it makes the pouch lay nice and flat and smooth!

diy cord organizer travel

And with that…your travel cord organizer is done! It’s time to load it up with whatever cords you want and need by simply threading them through the elastic openings.

DIY Travel Cord Organizer

Then…no matter how full your organizer is…you should have no trouble rolling it up and tying it shut to keep all the cords protected inside! Toss your organizer into your bag or luggage for quick and easy access to whatever charging device you need while on the go!

DIY Travel Cord Organizer

Oh! And if you’re lumping a bunch of cords together in one travel case, be sure to use my oh-so-easy trick for keeping everyone’s cords and accessories “labeled”: matching washi tape! Simply pick a different pattern/color for each person and wrap it around plugs, cords, ear phones and other accessories! You can read more about this idea here !

When all device cords and chargers look the same, use washi tape to personalize and claim yours!

With just some fabric scraps and less than an hour of your time, you can whip up a travel cord organizer for yourself (and everyone else in the family!). Personalize it by using your favorite colors, patterns, fabrics, and tailor the size based on how many cords you typically travel with! With such a cute and functional accessory in tow, you’ll be sure to be charged up and ready no matter where you go!

Instead of “with wrong sides facing” shouldn’t that say “with right sides together”?

25 DIY Cord And Cable Organizers For A Clean And Uncluttered Home

Simona Ganea on Homedit

It’s always annoying when you see cables everywhere, especially at the back of your desk. Even if you arrange and organize them nicely at first they eventually get all tangled and it all becomes a mess.

cord organizer

An easy solution would be to have a cord management organizer to help you keep everything in place. If you can’t find one in stores or if you simply prefer to make one yourself, there are plenty of projects that can give you useful tips and ideas.

Here are some of them.

DIY cable management and cord organizer

Using toilet paper rolls..

toilet paper for cord organizer

Keeping your cables organized doesn’t have to be difficult or complicated. There are lots of very simple solutions that you can use. For example, you can use toilet paper rolls. It might sound funny at first but toilet paper rolls are actually great for this. Simply write on each one what type of cable it contains and the labels will help you save space and time when looking for your cables.

Label cords.

label cord organizer idea

Can’t always remember which cable is which? Avoid accidents like unplugging your computer by mistake just because you picked the wrong cable and use tags to mark each one. Use different colors and label them so that you always know which one is which.

Raffia ribbon.

Ylc7ndmMNaY

When you travel, you always have to take your chargers with you. You probably end up putting them all in a bag and, when you arrive at the destination, you realize they got all tangled. But here’s a very simple and cute way of keeping them organized. Use raffia ribbons to keep all the cords organized. They’ll also help you distinguish them and you’ll always know which ones are yours in case you also carry someone else’s.

Homemade charging station.

Ylc7ndmMNaY

Usually the desk is messy even when it’s clean. That’s because of all the cords and wires that get tangled and that look ugly. So how about a box to keep them all organized? That’s right, all you need is a box similar to the one in the photo. Cut a hole in the box for the cord to pass through and then several other holes for the cords of the chargers and devices you usually use.{found on allyou }.

Plug hub desk.

Ylc7ndmMNaY

The Plug Hub is the perfect solution for all the cables that need to be concealed and organized. It’s an under-desk cord management station and keeps all the cords and the power strip hidden inside this unit. It has three openings on the top and three cord anchors inside. It’s made of rigid plastic with a rubber foot on the bottom.

Ylc7ndmMNaY

If you want something that’s both cute and functional, this lovely little cable organizer monster might be the perfect thing. You can make it yourself from a piece of felt. You’ll need some snap fasteners and cotton filling as well. You can choose any shape you want.{found on onelmon }.

Color Coded Cable Ties and Labels.

Ylc7ndmMNaY

Another easy trick that can help you keep all the cords in order is to use cable ties and labels. You can use different colors of duct tape to easily identify your cords and chargers. You’ll also need Velcro and a hole punch. It’s easy and it’s something everyone should have in their home.{found on instructables }.

Earphone Cord Keepers with Printable Packagin.

Ylc7ndmMNaY

Here’s an idea of a fun and useful gift that you can make for someone for Christmas. It’s an earphone cord keeper shaped like a gingerbread man. To make it you need polymer clay, mini cookie cutters, a bamboo stick, a cutter and sandpaper. You can choose any shape you want. This is just an example. First knead and flatten the clay and then cut it to the shape desired. Use the sandpaper to get the texture of a gingerbread man or use something else to imitate the texture of the image you have chosen. Add the details and then poke the hole for the cords.{found on mintedstrawberry }.

Charging station.

Ylc7ndmMNaY

This is a DIY recharge station, very functional and very easy to make. You need a cardboard storage box, book plates, small brads, a craft knife, something to punch holes with, some paint, a pencil, ruler and power board. Mark where you want the book plates to go and then mark the inside area as well. Cut the rectangles and punch the holes needed for the brads. Cut a hole for the power board cord as well. Add a coat of paint and you’re done.{found on tashachawner }.

Keep cords organized.

Ylc7ndmMNaY

Organizing your desk doesn’t have to be difficult or annoying. The most frustrating part is keeping all the cords in place. It’s frustrating when you’re looking for a charger or cord and you can’t find it because of all the mess in the drawer. So how about a nice box to keep them all organized? Use a media box divided into compartments with scraps of cardboard. Label each section and add some color as well.{found on hgtv }.

USB Chargers.

Ylc7ndmMNaY

Another problem appears when you use USB chargers. When you unplug the device the charger ends up on the floor. You can use paper holders to keep them nice and organized on your desk. They’ll also always be close at hand when you need them.

Hanging cord organizer.

Ylc7ndmMNaY

Usually all the chargers, earplugs and cords end up in a drawer and they get all tangled. Even if you try to keep them organized, it’s not always easy. But here’s how you can make a very simple cord organizer for all these items. You’ll need some foam rubber and Velcro or double sided tape. The idea is to punch several holes for the cables of your charger, earplugs, USB cords, etc. and to attach them to a wall or to your desk.

Cord Minder.

Ylc7ndmMNaY

Remember those old film containers? You might still have some in your home. You probably thought they became useless now that we don’t use films anymore. Well, think again. Go find some of those containers because you’ll need them for these cord organizers. Remove the lids and begin by cutting around the bottom of the container. Remove the bottom and use the rest to organize the cables in your drawer.{found on instruclables }.

Ylc7ndmMNaY

A cord rack can also be a very good idea. First you’ll have to measure the width of the board you’re going to use. Find its center and mark it. Add two marks on either side and, using the T-square, transfer them downwards. Make the holes and add the bolts. It will help you store your cables out of the way and untangled.{found on instructables }.

Cable Management.

Ylc7ndmMNaY

This last project will show you how to keep all the cables in one place without getting them tangled. You’ll need a pegboard, a drill, a saw, zip ties, a wood file and clamps. First measure the space and then cut the pegboard to the desired size. Mark the spots for the holes and use the drill to make them. Connect the pegboard to the TV stand and decide where the cables need to hang. Connect one device at a time until you’ve organized them all.{found on instructables }.

DIY Cord Organizer the Cheapest Way Possible

By: Author Amy

Posted on Last updated: March 12, 2024

Home / Crafts / Everyday Crafts / DIY Cord Organizer the Cheapest Way Possible

You can make a DIY cord organizer for cheap using this tutorial! This cable organizer can be made in minutes – we even provide a template.

Skills Required: None. You don’t need any prior crafting knowledge to make a cable tidy using this method. You’ll simply be hot gluing felt and attaching Velcro. Even a child can do it (supervised, of course!).

DIY cord organizers

I got my first cell phone when I was 25 years old. Of course it had a charging cord, and along with the phone quickly became something to manage. Now I had a phone AND a charger to keep track of – and did I mention, if I lost one, the other became worthless?

You should never put small phones and cords in the hands of disorganized people such as myself.

Fast forward several years (okay almost 19 years), and here I am with more devices and more cords than I know what to do with! Do you know how many cords I’ve purchased over the course of time that I thought I lost, only to find them again?

It’s a lot.

So consequently, I’ve had to make a DIY cord organizer more than once. More than ten times, really. And now I’m going to show you how to make a cable organizer on the cheap!

The secret is that my design is extremely easy and extremely inexpensive to make. This is a great craft idea for adults , but also perfect for kids for back to school crafts . Kids these days have cords to manage too!

One of the complaints I had about other cord organizers is that they still didn’t keep the cable tidy – I could stuff them in a pouch, but then they’d be twisted when they came out.

With this cable organizer, you have to tidy the cord first before wrapping it around. It works really well for staying organized .

Plus the price is right Felt is less than $1 per piece at the craft store, and if you enjoy creating you probably have the other supplies on hand. Well, you’ll probably have to buy Velcro.

Velcro to Use

The only question you might have about this cable tidy project is what kind of Velcro to use. If you’ve never bought Velcro before, there are a few things to know:

  • You can get it in any color you like to coordinate with your felt (we used white)
  • I prefer the 3/4″ width but you can also use either 7/8″ or 1″
  • It can be purchased in a long strip or in squares – don’t get the round pieces
  • You can get either self-adhesive or no adhesive – you’re going to use hot glue to attach it

Keep in mind that there are two parts to Velcro, the male and the female. The male side has the hooks, the female side has the loops. That’s important as you follow the tutorial below, so that when you wrap the cable tidy, it’s secure.

If you’re ready to start the project, this is what you’re going to need.

Gather These Supplies

  • Felt in two colors
  • Paper template
  • Hot glue gun

The tutorial for the project is at the bottom of this post, but before you scroll down to that, I want to mention a few things you might need or want to know:

  • If you don’t have a hot glue gun, you can use craft glue or felt glue . I keep felt glue on hand just because it works better than regular glue. It doesn’t soak in as quickly into the felt and doesn’t make blotches. You can try it with craft glue, it just takes longer to dry. Place a book on top or something heavy while setting.
  • Felt is available at the craft store, but many times it’s just the cheapy stuff in the kids’ section. You can check out the fabric section if your craft store has it. You can also look for wool felt on Etsy . Benzie Design has some cute stuff too.
  • You could probably substitute with another fabric besides felt, but it has to be thick enough to be stable when you wrap it (and hold the cords). For example, regular cotton fabric is a no-go on its own. If you try something else, let me know how it works!

Ready to wrap your cord? Here’s how it’s done:

  • Wrap your cord and place it down
  • Fold the short end down and attach the Velcro
  • Roll the cord over once
  • Pull the tab up and attach the Velcro again

Wrapping a cord in a handmade organizer

Your cord is very secure and the organizer won’t slip off, even in your bag! I had so much I made three of these DIY cord organizers in just a matter of minutes. Here’s the how to card for this project:

After I finished the project, I realized that I could’ve added some sort of embellishment to the large tab. Something like embroidery , a button, etc. I kind of like them plain, but I just wanted to bring that up in case you want to give it a go. Let me know what you think in the comments!

Nothing is worse than fishing your charging cord out from the bottom of your backpack or suitcase only to discover a tangled mess. Plus, as time passes, tangles can lead to fraying which turns quickly into malfunction. A travel cord organizer can help eliminate this problem, and many of them are affordable with cool features so everything stays sorted.

Travel cord organizers often come with mesh, canvas, and zippered pockets, plus elastic loops and additional compartments to keep all of your cables, cords, flash drives, USB sticks, and other tech gadgets in order. Depending on what you need, there are large options that can hold numerous cords and accessories, and small picks to hold the bare essentials. We've researched the best travel cord organizers with numerous features and gathered the best ones for all your travel needs here.

Best Overall

Canboc electronic organizer case.

The pockets’ varied sizing allows you to stow many different types of things.

A few interior pockets are very small.

We love the Canboc Travel Electronic Organizer for a few reasons. Firstly, its hard-shell exterior is easy to clean and protects your cords better than a soft-sided organizer, plus there’s a waterproof layer underneath the external layer that wicks away moisture. Underneath the waterproof layer, there’s a shock-absorbing pad that helps protect your contents in case the organizer gets dropped. So overall, the construction here is great.

Inside the clamshell-style case, the bottom half comes with two velcro dividers that you can arrange in multiple ways to give you three sections shaped to your liking. This is also a great place to put items you don’t want to get scratched, as the dividers provide a barrier between them. There’s a middle divider in between the two sides that includes mesh pockets of various sizes, allowing you to stow memory cards, USB sticks, power banks, a computer mouse, earbuds, and more safely. Then the top half also has two mesh pockets that work well for charging cables and computer cords, and there’s even a small elastic loop to hold a tablet pen.

The exterior includes a hand strap for easy carrying, plus a carabiner so you can clip the organizer anywhere you’d like, or carry it more like a purse strap. The entire organizer opens wide with two zippers, allowing you to easily access everything you need within. Four colors are available.

The Details: 9.12 x 5.57 x 2.43 inches | PU leather | 12 compartments | Zipper closure

Best Budget

Travelwant cable organizer bag.

There are numerous spaces for organization and it folds out flat.

The attached carry strap is small.

You can’t beat what you get with this economical organizer bag. It’s great for charging cords, charging blocks, tablet pens, and other cords you need to stow away neatly. The wraparound zipper means that the bag opens up flat so you can organize as you wish and find cords quickly when needed. One side has five mesh sections for cords and tablet pens, and the other side has three elastic loops that can also work for cords along with a mesh, zippered section for charging blocks, a power bank, or even a laptop charger. The bag is made from waterproof fabric, so any spills just roll away. Tuck it neatly into your backpack, carry-on, purse, or carry it by the attached handle.

The Details: 9.8 x 7 x 3 inches | Oxford cloth | 9 compartments | Zipper closure

Best Splurge

Stuart and lau the tech kit.

Stuart and Lau

The kit slides neatly over your luggage handle.

It could use a few more pockets or zippered compartments.

For a sophisticated look while wheeling through the airport, the Stuart and Lau pick is a winner. The clamshell-style front pocket opens flat so you can easily access all your cords, cables, and chargers, and the back panel includes a hidden pocket along with a sleeve to attach the kit to your luggage handle. The interior is made from recycled twill, and the exterior includes Italian leather accents. The outside is also waterproof, providing added protection in case there’s rain — or your coffee takes a tumble while on the move. The interior has a bit of microsuede, too, and includes mesh pockets, a leather loop, and a divided strap to store tablet pens and such. The kit closes with a zipper, and two color options are available (although we prefer the olive color scheme).

The Details: 10.0 x 6.0 x 3.5 inches | Microsuede, twill, and leather | 7 compartments | Zipper closure

Bagsmart Electronic Organizer

The quilted, bright exterior offers a pop of color to your tech bag.

There is only one zippered interior pocket.

A bright exterior with a criss-cross, quilted pattern meets a light beige interior that makes it easy to find charging cables and tech items fast. Multiple mesh pockets store smaller items like memory cards, charging blocks, and flash drives, while loops hold cords, pens, and even a computer mouse, if needed. There’s also a mesh pocket with a zipper that’s large enough to store your phone or a charging bank. The exterior is made from water-resistant fabric that wicks away moisture, plus padding to keep your tech gear safe and secure. This case is so stylish, you’ll likely want to use it for office commuting in addition to travel.

The Details: 9.4 x 6.7 x 1.4 inches | Polyester | 13 compartments | Zipper closure

Twod Electronic Organizer

There are lots of elastic loops for cords.

The pouch isn’t very deep.

Just a bit larger than a standard smartphone, the Twod Electric Organizer is a great buy for its numerous features, all packed into a small pouch. It’s made from water-repellent nylon, which keeps unwanted water away and also protects your cords and cables from getting bent and damaged. It unzips to fold out flat, making it easy to pack before a trip. One side of the organizer has six elastic loops for cords and cables, plus a mesh pocket underneath to store your phone or a power bank. The other side has a zippered mesh pocket and another pocket underneath that works as another storage space for a power bank or battery pack. The elastic loops can secure something as small as a flash drive or a longer cord wrapped up nicely. A small loop on the exterior allows you to carry the little pouch, or grab it from your bag quickly when needed.

The Details: 8.3 x 4.3 x 2 inches | Nylon | 9 compartments | Zipper closure

Best Organizer Roll

Procase travel gear organizer.

There are ample pockets and compartments to keep things separate.

You’ll have to tighten the elastic cord to secure the case since there isn’t a zipper.

For an organizer that will unfold completely but also pack up tight for easy traveling, the ProCase Travel Gear Organizer is our favorite. Roll and secure it with the elastic hook and loop closure, and then unroll it when needed to display all your cords and gadgets. It comes with six elastic loops for cords and cables, three mesh pockets that work for smaller USBs and memory cards, two open pockets for chargers or a computer mouse, a large zippered pocket that can hold a power bank or cell phone, and two small zippered pockets to secure smaller items. The case is made from tough nylon, meaning it stands up to wear and tear and is water resistant. You can even use the elastic strap to hang the case up in your hotel room, tent, or wherever you’ll need it. Five color options are available.

The Details: 17 x 9 inches (open) and 4.5 x 9 inches (rolled) | Nylon | 14 compartments | Hook-and-loop closure

Best Water-resistant

Bevegekos tech organizer travel case.

The two separate compartments keep things in order.

The pockets aren’t deep, so bulkier items can make for a tight squeeze.

We like this small organizer from Bevegekos because two zippers provide two different compartments – each with different features. It’s a great way to keep things separated in their own designated place. On one side, there’s a large pocket big enough for a power bank or cellphone, plus another large mesh pocket. The opposite side has five smaller mesh pockets, plus another larger pocket that could hold a laptop charger or computer mouse. The exterior of the case is made from Jacquard fabric, which is water resistant to keep moisture away. There’s also an attached lanyard for carrying, or you can toss it in your tote bag and easily grab it with the lanyard. There are several shades of pink, blue, and gray (plus a black option) available.

Bagsmart Cable Organizer Bag

Compartments are large and small for various items.

The bag is narrow, so bulkier items won’t fit.

For the ultimate in space saving coupled with maximum compartment space, the Universal Cable Organizer is a small but mighty case that can hold all your cords, cards, chargers, and earbuds. Two interior mesh pockets are zippered for larger items, and six mesh pouches hold smaller things like flash drives and laptop chargers. There are also seven elastic loops for cords, pens, and cables, and even three slots for SD cards. The fabric exterior is water-resistant and comes with padding to protect your items a bit, and the entire organizer fits inside a small bag or backpack. Three colors are available.

The Details: 6.3 x 9.5 x 1 inches | Nylon | 16 compartments | Zipper closure

BUBM Electronic Organizer

The amount of compartments is incredible.

The deep design takes up more room in your suitcase.

Tech-heavy travelers carrying a multitude of devices will want an organizer on the larger size, and we like this one because it’s large enough to fit a tablet, wide enough for things like bulky power banks, but still comes with smaller pockets and loops for cords, cables, and flash drives. In total, there are more than 20 compartments, pockets, and loops, making this organizer a win for when you have to carry it all. The tablet pouch is padded, offering extra protection for your device, and the exterior fabric is water-resistant. A small strap on top allows for easy carrying.

The Details: 9.3 x 6.5 x 3.5 inches | Nylon | 24 compartments | Zipper closure

Most Compact

Dagne dover tech organizer.

Dagne Dover

It’s simple but can hold all the essentials.

The pockets don’t have closures.

To keep things simple when you’re only taking a few electronics, the Arlo Neoprene Tech Organizer from Dagne Dover is a stylish, small, and smart way to store cords and a couple of larger items like earbuds and a charger. It’s made from neoprene with a recycled polyester interior, and is water resistant to keep your goods dry. One side has an elastic loop and a pouch behind the loop, while the other side has two elastic loops with a mesh pocket underneath. There’s also a mesh pocket on the back, plus a D ring to easily attach the organizer to something as desired. Its square shape is great for storing within a larger bag or suitcase, and six color options are available.

The Details: 4.5 x 2.25 x 5 inches | Neoprene and polyester | 6 compartments | Zipper closure

Best Hardside

July tech kit.

The translucent exterior allows you to somewhat see the contents within.

There aren’t a lot of pockets or dividers.

For the busy traveler who tends to just throw things into their suitcase with no order, a hard shell case that can stand up through security checks and in the bottom of plane bellies is a crucial buy. This case from July is made from crushproof polycarbonate, meaning it will hold its own while inside a tossed-around backpack or under pressure inside a suitcase. It folds out flat, and one side is fully open, so you can organize to your liking, while the other side has a floating divider with three elastic loops, plus room underneath for a power bank. Coming in four translucent color schemes, you can also personalize the Kit, too, meaning it’s a great gift for your organized — or unorganized — loved one.

The Details: Dimensions: 2.7 x 8 x 5 inches | Material: Polycarbonate | # Pockets/compartments:5 | Closure: Zipper

Best Eco-friendly

Bellroy tech kit.

The recycled materials make us feel better about the purchase.

The pockets don’t have a closure.

The sustainability-minded consumer will appreciate Bellroy’s Tech Kit, as it’s made from recycled, woven fabric that was once plastic water bottles. Lots of color options are available, too, a perk not found as often when it comes to eco-friendly purchases. The kit itself zips open flat for easy organization and has lots of places to store your cords and cables. The floating wall has seven elastic loops for cables, pens, and flash drives, and underneath the floating wall, there’s a magnetic slip pocket that’s big enough to fit a power bank or laptop charger. Two canvas pockets on the opposite side of the organizer can hold a computer mouse, rolled-up cords, or a laptop battery instead so everything stays separate and untangled.

The Details: 9 x 5 x 2.8 inches | Recycled fabric | 11 compartments | Magnetic and zipper closures

Tips for Buying a Travel Cord Organizer

Count your cords first.

Really take a look at how many charging cables and cords you have and take that into account before purchasing an organizer. You might be able to get away with something much smaller than you thought, but tech nerds might have to opt for something larger if there are numerous cords to tow.

Prioritize organizational features

Things like elastic loops, extra exterior pockets, narrow and deep compartments, and removable dividers are all organizational features that help when buying a pouch. Keeping things sorted makes it easy to quickly find what you need as well as limit tangles along the way. Always take a look at what’s included with a case before buying to make sure it fits your needs, and lay out your commonly carried cords to crosscheck.

Look for durable materials

Nylon, polyester, leather, and hard plastic are all good choices for organizers, as they tend to be water-resistant and resistant to tears and scratches.

Depending on how often you’ll need to access the organizer depends on where to stow it. If you’re working on a plane ride or will need a charge, keep it in your backpack, purse, or smaller bag, close at hand. If you don’t need it often, you can put it in an overhead carry-on, or even a checked bag, but be certain to remove any power banks if opting for the latter.

Most organizers come with attached elastic loops that store your cords neatly. You’ll just wrap up the cords in a circle or oval, and then tuck them under the loops for secure storage. There are also velcro options sold separately (in jumbo packs , quite often), or you can buy silicone and leather loops to keep cords together inside — and outside — the pouch instead.

Travel cord organizers on average are anywhere from $15 to $30, but larger ones, or more stylish options made of leather, will cost more.

These days, savvy adventurers take much more than sunscreen and a passport when traveling. To stay connected while you are away, cell phones, tablets, and even laptops are becoming must-have accessories for travelers. Travel cameras are also becoming a part of an essential traveler’s kit. This means lots of cables and accessories to keep organized.

Keeping your electronics safe and organized makes it much easier to carry these items with you, and for this reason, a well-designed organizer is worth its weight in gold.

Before you invest in an organizer for your electronics, consider the following:

Size and Weight

Cable organizer size

The organizer you choose should be a useful addition to your luggage. If it is bulky, heavy, or simply unsuitable, forget about it. The more gear you have, the larger the organizer you will need. While not particularly heavy on their own, organizers stuffed full of devices, chargers, and other accessories can weigh your travel backpack down before you’ve even left for your trip.

Bottom Line: Choose an organizer that is large enough to carry everything you need, but not so big that it has wasted space in it.

Pockets and Organization

Cable organizer pockets

Designed with one job in mind, to keep your gear organized while you travel, the number of pockets and compartments your organizer offers should align with the amount of equipment you need to carry.

Most of the better electronics organizers will have a decent amount of pockets, slings, and holders that are designed to carry SD cards, cables, batteries, adapters , headphones , and other necessities, and may even have dedicated spaces for your passport or boarding cards, too.

Bottom Line: While pockets are essential, you shouldn’t have so many that you can’t shut the organizer, or make it so bulky that it won’t fit in your travel backpack. Take only what you need with you, and find an organizer that will keep it safe and tidy.

Material and Durability

Cable organizer material

You would choose a new backpack or suitcase with longevity in mind, so you should apply the same rigorous standards when looking for an electronic travel organizer. Organizers come in a variety of materials, including canvas, leather, nylon, and even plastic, and it’s your choice as to which one you prefer.

Bottom Line: Choose a material that has water-resistant qualities to keep your gear protected from spills or bad weather, and that is strong enough to avoid rips or tears, but lightweight enough to not weigh you down.

Android tech organizer kit items

Now that you have all the items you will add to the travel tech organizer, it's time to assemble.

Layout items on the table.

Separate the cleaning wipes pack from one another if they are attached.

There are plenty of pockets, so laying them out and fitting them into the pockets are pretty straightforward.

The center pocket is excellent for the portable charger and is a perfect size for that area. You can also run the cables through the bottom and close the case altogether to charge a device without taking it out of the case.

Add the wall charger to the zipper pocket to prevent it from falling out. This pocket is also good for earbuds and watch chargers.

Use the band at the top to hold the wrapped cables in place.

If you have iOS devices, you must swap out a few of these items to be compatible with them.

iOS Tech Organizer items

Now that you have all the items to make the iOS tech organizer kit, here is how to do it.

The screen cleaner wipes are great for cleaning your computer (Affiliate Link) and phone. Adding them to the front mesh pocket lets you see them at a glance.

If you have an iPad, and it is a newer version, you can add an extra cable for that one as well.

Since the watch has its cable, you will need to add one.

Join our Decluttering and Home Organizing Support Group

For the AirPods, you must bring a regular iOS charger to charge the case and earbuds. Add the earbuds and case to the zipper pocket.

Visit the video to see how I put it together!

I'm glad you asked; I added some other items you can add to this tech organizer kit.

Your watch charger cable

Disinfectant wipes .

SIM ejection tool that came with the phone to reset the phone.

Reuseable lens or glass cleaning cloth

Portable keyboard —this wouldn't fit in the case I mentioned here, but you could add it if you have a larger case.

MicroSD Memory cards for phones .

Thumb drives .

Noise-canceling or regular earbuds

The total cost to make two was $ 204.49 (including tax) . Each of them costs about $100.00. Remember that these are higher-end chargers and cables, and you can find cheaper ones online or on sale.

IMPORTANT: When you buy the products, make sure they are compatible with your device or your recipient's device.

You can choose a black or white color on the chargers, whichever you want.

Using the zipper pocket, you can add your car charger.

You can add extra long cords (6 feet or longer) instead of shorter ones.

Well, there you have it! Here is what the organizer kit looks like. It's excellent and very useful for tech family members. Who will you be making this for?

The Best Travel Tech Organizers to Keep Cords Neat and Tidy

By Kelsey Glennon

It’s on every packing list , though we hardly need to write it down to remember it: a smartphone. Few of us travel without one these days, and more often than not, our technology haul extends beyond just a phone; a tablet or e-reader, digital camera, laptop, portable charger, and wireless headphones may be on the list, too. Whether you’re working remotely or not, chances are you’re bringing your entire digital setup with you. But throwing a tangle of cords and technology in your carry-on is a recipe for frustration when you find your face pressed up against the tray table, blindly searching for a charging cable in your under-seat bag.

Where there’s a digital device, there are its accessories, and tech organizers keep them tidy and easy to find while you’re in transit. If you like the organization of a toiletry bag for your body and skincare, why not a tech bag for your digital gear?

Travel tech organizers come in many different designs. There are hard-shell, soft-shell, folio, and roll-up varieties that are designed with different layers of pouches, elastics, zippers, and pockets. In my own experience, simple designs come out on top. Look for adjustable straps and pockets that will grow with you and your tech gear.

Everyone's needs are slightly different for their own digital Dopp kit, so you'll want to first take stock of your essentials. Lay all your gear out on a table to help determine what kind of bag will fit your tech travel setup. Then, read on for our most-recommended travel tech organizers.

Best overall

diy cord organizer travel

Parker Clay’s bags are made of fine Ethiopian leather and abide by the highest standards of ethical manufacturing and sustainable sourcing. The leather goods brand partners with Ellilta Women at Risk (EWAR), to hire and train at-risk women in craftsmanship. Its bags are not only made sustainably (read more about the brand's leather production and sourcing here ), they’re also well-designed and timeless in their construction. The Guzo Utility Pouch is a chameleon of travel bags: Use it as a slim tech pouch that you can slide into any tote , or transform it into a handy clutch you bring to a cafe or out to dinner.

Standout features: A sleeve slips over your palm to make this bag cup into your hand, so it doesn’t slip out of your grasp while you hold it.

What we love most: It can transform into a chic clutch by night if you’re trying to pack a tight capsule wardrobe .

Dimensions: 10"L x .25"W x 7"H

Best budget pick

A tech organizer.

Tech organizers don’t have to be complicated, they just need to be easy to find in your bag when you need them. The Travelon tech accessory organizer in the color lime pops, and is easy to spot quickly, even in the dark. The roll-up design makes it compact and malleable in any bag. Made of ripstop fabric, the water- and stain-resistant exterior would also hold up on backpacking or outdoor trips if you’re stuffing it in a jam-packed hiking pack .

Standout features: The flexible roll-up design makes this ideal for tucking into empty corners of any backpack or bag.

What we love most: Malleable yet tough ripstop construction

Dimensions : 6.5"L x 1"W x 5"H

Best for remote workers

diy cord organizer travel

If you’re a digital nomad , chances are your laptop goes with you everywhere, which means chargers and accessories are a must-carry too. This Mosiso laptop bag cuts down on the number of bags and cases you need: It’s a shoulder bag, cushioned laptop sleeve, and tech organizer all in one. Available in standard 13" and 16" sizes that fit most laptops, the Mosiso keeps your laptop in a cushy cocoon with 360-degree padding. On the outside, tuck all of your laptop accessories into soft zippered pouches. Big enough to hold external hard drives and battery packs, you won’t forget them when they’re attached to your laptop.

Standout features: Keep laptop accessories in the same place as your laptop to avoid fishing around for them in another bag. Carry it like a briefcase, or attach the sling strap and make it a day bag you can bike or walk with hands-free.

What we love most: A luggage sleeve that slips over your carry-on handle

Dimensions : 16.57”L x 11.81”W x 2.36”H

Best for photographers

diy cord organizer travel

Peak Design is known for designing with the travel photographer in mind. The Peak Design tech pouch is a padded, semi-rigid carry-all that can stand upright on its own and opens like a clam with a 270-degree zipper. Interior accordion-like compartments are designed to separate key photography gear and snug elastics hug SD cards. A pen holder keeps a stylus handy in one place. Large pockets open up for charging blocks, power banks, and hard drives. An exterior zippered pouch holds need-to-reach items without unloading the whole bag. Peak Design’s proprietary anchor system and strap transform this tech pouch into a small day bag when you need it.

Standout features: A hand sleeve that slides over your palm makes this easy to open on the go without needing a flat surface to set it on. Plus, it can accommodate bulky items like a small point-and-shoot camera, a mouse, or a battery.

What we love most: The charging cable pass-through allows you to plug in your device from the outside without taking out the cable and battery.

Dimensions: 6"L x 9.5"W x 4"H

Best for Apple users

diy cord organizer travel

Both a battery pack and a tech organizer, the Function 101 BentoStack Charge 8000 is a stackable hardshell case geared toward Apple loyalists. The Charge 8000 offers three ways to charge, which can be used simultaneously: a USB-C port, USB-A port, and wireless charging. Four different storage layers provide a space for everything, which includes two shallow layers for your Apple Pencil and Apple watchbands; and two deeper layers for larger items like AirPods, charging cables, and wall charging bricks. Mix and match the layers as you like, and keep it all together with a color-matched silicon band.

Standout features: Apple’s love for minimalist design makes this Japanese–inspired tech storage box blend in seamlessly with your products.

What we love most: It’s a hefty battery bank with handy attached storage, which keeps a suite of Apple accessories tidy and juiced up on the go.

Dimensions: 7.75"L x 3.75"W  x 4.6"H

Best for everyday use

diy cord organizer travel

This mini tech organizer from Dagne Dover might as well live in your everyday tote. The Dagne Dover Arlo tech organizer in the small version is an agile addition to your travel kit because of its nimble size—tuck it into a belt bag, travel sling , or day pack without much added bulk. Designed to keep your laptop and phone basics handy, this neoprene organizer doesn’t leave extra space for items to slip around. Everything is kept snug using elastics and mesh pockets made of recycled plastic.

Standout features: Try it in two sizes—small and large, and swap them out for shorter or longer trips.

What we love most: The small size makes this easy to add to day bags, belt bags, or slings without taking up too much space or adding bulk.

Dimensions: Small: 4.5" L x 2.25"W x 5”H; large: 8"L x 3.25"W x 5.25"H

Best colorways

diy cord organizer travel

Calpak’s travel tech organizer doesn’t reinvent the wheel here, but they do make it a lot more colorful and fun. This lay-flat organizer has elastics for storing rolled-up cords, and a zippered pouch perfect for USBs, hard drives, or charging bricks. The trouble won’t be figuring out how to organize your tech, it’ll be choosing from one of 16 different colorful patterns that show off your style and personality.

Standout features: A mesh pouch makes loose items easy to spot and grab quickly. Elastics and snug slip pockets keep anything from spilling out when you open it.

What we love most: The array of fun colors and classic patterns you can choose from.

Dimensions: 7"L x 9.5"W x 1.5"H

Best size options

diy cord organizer travel

Wandrd started as a Kickstarter designing bags for on-the-go photographers . Today, its travel bags are useful for any traveler looking for durable, gear-protecting bags backed by a lifetime guarantee. The Wandrd tech bag is offered in three different sizes which can nest together, or be bought and used separately. Built with an array of straps and grab points on the outside, you can attach these to your backpack or weekender using basic carabiners. An optional strap transforms the Wandrd tech bag into a compact sling. Earthy, neutral colors like Aegean blue, Yuma tan, and Sedona orange are fun variations to basic black, though that is offered too.

Standout features: Choose from a small, medium, or large version depending on your needs. Or, nest them together for an agile set of organizers that grows with your packing list.

What we love most: The fleece-lined zippered pouch (in the large size) keeps your iPhone cushioned and scratch-free.

Dimensions : Small: 7.75"L x 2"W 4.5"H; medium: 9"L x  3"W x 4.5"H; large:  9"L x 4"W x 5.5"H

Best water-resistant case

Bellroy Tech Kit

This semi-hardshell case from Bellroy carries just the essentials in a compact design. Available in 11 neutral colors made from recycled water-resistant woven fabric, the Bellroy is built to last and backed by a three-year warranty. A floating interior wall forms the interior pocket and closes with a satisfying magnetic click. Elastics hold dongles and other small items you may be prone to losing at the bottom of a bag.

Standout features: A firm, padded exterior give you peace of mind that your tech won’t get knocked or jostled around—essential for hard drives. Everything has a place in this organizer that keeps your accessories from moving an inch.

What we love most: The three-year warranty and water-resistant exterior

Dimensions : 5.12"L x 9.06"W x 2.8"H

Best discreet organizer

diy cord organizer travel

Disguised as a leather-bound book, the CaddySack tech organizer by Twelve South is great for those who like to sprawl out at the cafe but worry their AirPods might get swiped when they’re not looking. Zip up this organizer and it turns into an incognito book. Though CaddySack designs for Apple products, the interior Velcro straps aren't limiting, so whether you're packing a Mac brick, mouse, or travel outlet adapter, it'll fit right in. Suit up all your tech in a slick literary sleeve with the rest of its BookBook cases.

Standout features: A tweed interior and leather exterior give this tech organizer a polished look and feel.

What we love most: When you’re not traveling, this case looks great on an office bookshelf as an incognito way to keep cords together at home.

Dimensions : 5.7"L x 1.6"W x 8"H

diy cord organizer travel

The Parker Clay Olivia organizer is thoughtfully designed in partnership with HGTV interior designer Sabrina Soto . Design and organization go hand-in-hand and it shows in this full-grain leather bag’s accordion construction. It separates little bits and bobs and offers quick access to everything at a glance. You don’t need two hands to unzip, unlatch, or pull open a pocket—a smart feature for hurried travelers. Grab a few of the six neutral colors and use them for toiletries, makeup, and your tech.

Standout features: Durable leather construction allows it to stand up on its own

What we love most: Details like a brass zipper pair well with full-grain leather that will age nicely with time.

Dimensions : 8.5"L x 3"W x 6"H
