The Beautiful birds of Dry Tortugas National Park

Americas Oceanic National Park

Rising out of deep waters in the Gulf of Mexico, the Dry Tortugas are a migration waypoint and breeding ground for hundreds of thousands of birds. Birding enthusiasts will definitely want to bring binoculars for spotting sooty terns, masked booby, and the magnificent frigate bird, to name a few. And anglers will want to bring their rods and reels. The fish population here is also impressive, with over a dozen species to catch, including blackfin tuna, grouper, wahoo, mahi-mahi and sailfish.

Designated a national park in 1935, the seven islands that make up the Dry Tortugas are a protected area for marine life and habitats. That designation has ensured the islands remain the way Mother Nature intended. It also makes them a snorkeler’s paradise. Visitors from the world over journey here to explore the amazing ecosystem of coral reefs, mangrove islands, and calcified outcroppings.

We’ve Got Fort Jefferson & Loggerhead Key

Dry Tortugas Charters supply you with mask, snorkel, and fins, you’ll enter a beautiful underwater world—a unique ecosystem of aquatic plants and the marine creatures that depend on them. Schools of brightly colored tropical fish, sea turtles, rays, starfish, and conch cohabitate in perfect harmony. In order to maintain nature’s fragile balance, snorkelers are not allowed to touch the living coral. Please leave the reefs in the same beautiful condition in which you found them.

Like many places in the Florida Keys, snorkeling in the Dry Tortugas can be enjoyed by experts and novices alike. The shallow waters (5 to 15 feet) are easily accessible straight from the beach. Even if you’ve never snorkeled before, you’ll get right in the swim of things very quickly. So have fun. And please remember to use reef-friendly sunscreen.

More Dry Tortugas Info...

A step back in time.

You won’t be the first person enchanted by these picturesque islands. In 1513, Juan Ponce de Leon stopped here during his search for the legendary Fountain of Youth. Setting foot on the soft, powdery beaches, Ponce de Leon claimed the islands in the name of Spain. But what to call them? The answer didn’t take long. So taken by the abundance of sea turtles living here, the explorer named the islands  Las Tortugas , The Turtles. (“Dry” was added later when it was discovered the islands had no fresh-water springs).

No visit to the Dry Tortugas would be complete without exploring, snorkeling or scuba diving Fort Jefferson. Built by the US Army Corp of Engineers in the 1850s, the historic fort is a massive installation sprawled over most of Garden Key. Used by the Union army during the civil war, Fort Jefferson acted as both a coastal defense fortification and a prison.

Among those imprisoned here was dr Samuel Mudd, the physician who treated Abraham Lincoln’s assassin John Wilkes Booth as he fled south from Washington D.C. Fort Jefferson was never finished and eventually abandoned as a working fort. Fortunately, it is a working museum. Reservations for private guided tours can be made in advance of your trip by Key West Charter Boat.

Private Charters To Loggerhead Key

Three miles west of Fort Jefferson you’ll find Loggerhead Key, home of the Dry Tortugas lighthouse. Also known as Loggerhead lighthouse, the 157-foot tall structure first entered service in 1858, and was only recently removed from operation in 2015. Once the most powerful lighthouse in the United States, Dry Tortugas light has been said to be “a greater distance from the mainland than any other light in the world.”

When approaching the Dry Tortugas, the lighthouse can be spotted jutting into the sky like a giant pencil, providing a clear navigation point for captains to follow. Private vessels are required to check-in and file a boat permit on Garden Key before visiting Loggerhead Key.

Dry Tortugas Fishing

Fishing charters to the Dry Tortugas frequently combine the sport of angling with the luxury of yachting. Many sportfishing boats are as well-appointed as large power yachts, with air-conditioned salons, state-of-the-art entertainment systems, and fully-stocked fridges and bars. So they’re well suited for the non-anglers in your party.

The fishermen among you will find the 70-mile trip an excellent trolling opportunity. It’s not uncommon for the fighting chair to be occupied for the lion’s share of the journey west. Once you reach the Dry Tortugas, drop anchor and everyone jumps in. There will be plenty of time for more world-class fishing on the ride back to Key West.

Ferry service from key west Florida to the Dry Tortugas on Yankee freedom iii leaves daily from the town dock and takes about 2 1/2 hours. Dry Tortugas National Park prices are available by booking online.

The Dry Tortugas are the last seven coral islands that flow westward from the Florida Keys into the Gulf of Mexico. Here you will find some of the most pristine waters in the United States. The Dry Tortugas is a designated preserve, and the marine life here is protected, and spearfishing and lobstering are prohibited.

dry tortugas private boat 2

In 1513, Juan Ponce de Leon discovered the Islands, as he did much of Florida. He named the island “Tortuga,” which is Spanish for tortoise, because of the enormous sea turtles that inhabited the islands and waters of the area.

The area was proclaimed a National Park in 1935 as the Fort Jefferson National Monument, after the fort on Garden Key. The site was renamed the Dry Tortugas National Park in 1992. One of several parks in the waters of the Florida Keys , the Dry Tortugas National Park has a water area of 100 square miles. This gives you a vast area to explore, snorkel, dive, and enjoy the peacefulness of nature.

The Dry Tortugas is about seventy miles west of Key West at the farthest end of the Florida Keys. They are coral islands designated as a National Park and maintained by the National Park Service. However, the islands are actually in international waters, as the Continental United States ends at South Beach, Key West.

The closest group of keys, 45 miles to the east, is the Marquesas, which are also unoccupied and offer excellent snorkeling locations. Eastward, another ten miles is Boca Grande, which, like the Marquesas, is inside the Key West National Wildlife refuge.

A Dry Tortugas hotspot: Loggerhead Key

The farthest Key to the west of Garden Key is  Loggerhead Key , where the Loggerhead Lighthouse warns mariners of the shallow shores. It is three miles west of Garden Key and is open for day use only. The Lighthouse was built in 1858 and suffered hurricane damage in 1873 that required replacing the top nine feet of the structure.

An electric lamp was installed in 1931, but it did not become automated until 1988. A lighthouse keeper, who would turn the light on at dusk and off at dawn, occupied Loggerhead Key until that time. Part of one of the former lighthouse keeper’s homes is still standing after it burned. The newest keeper’s structure was built in the 1920s and remains today.

Loggerhead Key is also home to the largest population of loggerhead turtles globally; thus, its name and about 15,000 babies hatch here every year. That’s a lot of babies, so go slow when motoring about the waters of the Dry Tortugas; they are teeming with sea creatures of every type.

boat rentals dry tortugas

Yes, they can, and it is the best way to experience the Dry Tortugas. However, when visiting the Dry Tortugas, you are required to make a stop at Garden Key. Here you must pay an entrance fee and acquire any necessary permits for your visit.

While on Garden Key, you can take time to see Fort Jefferson and learn a bit about the islands’ history. Sailors have been visiting the Dry Tortugas for centuries, yet they are largely unaffected by man’s passage. Except there are fewer loggerhead turtles there now than when Ponce de Leon plied these waters searching for bounty and new lands.

Book your private charter to The Dry Tortugas here

The commercial ferry trip from Key West takes two to three hours, and you will share the boat with many other people and be on the same itinerary. On the other hand, a powerboat rental traveling at 35 mph from Key West will have you there in about two hours, and you will need about the same amount of time for the return trip.

Can you stay overnight at Dry Tortugas?

Yes, you can and have the choice of  camping ashore , on Garden Key or staying aboard your boat. If you stay on your boat, you must anchor a nautical mile from the Fort Jefferson harbor light. Anchorage is allowed in the area with sand and rubble bottom, and be clear of any channels where boats will travel.

You will need at least five hours to make the trip there and back, in the light of day, which will give you three to four hours to explore the Dry Tortugas. So, plan on eight to ten hours to Garden Key and back, which will give you time to look around while you are there.

You should be able to leave Key West around sunrise and be back in time before the sunsets. However, unless you are sailing, you will need several days to make your way to the Dry Tortugas and back.

With a  private boat charter from Boatsetter , you can rent a boat large enough to ply the waters of the Florida Straits and Gulf of Mexico and keep it for a day, two, or a few. Because with a boat of your own, you can explore at your leisure, come, and go as you wish.

A trip to the Dry Tortugas will take you away from the crowds and away from the beaten track. The preservation of this area has allowed every species that lives here to thrive.

Take a private boat to the Dry Tortugas for the trip of a lifetime

Shared Boat Charter to the Dry Tortugas

The Dry Tortugas! Just saying the name conjures images of turquoise waters, untouched beaches, and a majestic 19th-century fort rising from the sea. This remote archipelago, 70 miles west of Key West, Florida, is a true hidden gem in the heart of the Florida Keys. Here’s a glimpse of what awaits you:

We leave the dock at 7am. It takes about an 1 3/4 hours to get to the Fort Jefferson dock. We will check you in to the park and you are free to roam around the park at your leisure. We can give you a guided tour if you wish to do so. After we leave the park, we go snorkeling at the Windjammer shipwreck for about an hour. We then head to Loggerhead Key for sightseeing, snorkeling, and lunch.

3 Ways to Travel to Dry Tortugas

Can private boats go to the dry tortugas.

How long is a boat ride to the Dry Tortugas?

Dry Tortugas trip itinerary

You will need at least five hours to make the trip there and back, in the light of day, which will give you three to four hours to explore the Dry Tortugas. So, plan on eight to ten hours to Garden Key and back, which will give you time to look around while you are there.

The only Seaplane Service to Dry Tortugas National Park!

70 miles west of Key West, Florida lies one of North America’s most inaccessible National Parks, the Dry Tortugas. The park is renowned for its marine life, pirate legends and sheer unspoiled beauty. It is dominated by its central feature, the majestic Fort Jefferson, the largest brick building in the western hemisphere.

Step back in time and explore the history that is Fort Jefferson. Sunbathe on a remote white sand beach or snorkel the living reef in the warm crystal clear waters.

Half Day Charter

This trip is just under 4 hours long, providing at least 2 1/2 hours of island time at Fort Jefferson/Dry Tortugas. Travel time is approximately 40 minutes each way. Departs morning & afternoon.

Full-Day Excursion

*Children under the age of 2 years are not assigned a seat and travel on an adults lap. Per the FAA once a child has had their 2nd birthday they must purchase a seat.

Additional National Park Service Entrance Fee $15.00 per person over the age of 16 (cash only). National Park Passes, Golden Eagle, Golden Age & Golden Access Passport are honored.

Tips and Secrets:

The best time of day to go the Dry Tortugas is our first flight in the morning or our last flight in the afternoon. The reason: with the speed of the seaplane we beat the ferry to and from the island. During the early morning trip the ferry is on its way out, during the late afternoon the ferry is on its way back. It is very quiet on the island during these times, even in peak season. Be sure to book early to get these times.

There are changing rooms and public toilets at Dry Tortugas. However, when the ferry is on the dock these toilets are locked and everyone uses the bathrooms on the ferry. This is done for environmental reasons as it leaves less waste on the island.

The cost of operating a seaplane and our small capacity means we will always be more expensive than the ferry service. But factor in that we do not add sales tax to our prices plus free parking at Key West Airport and the price gets a lot closer. Add to that spectacular low altitude sightseeing each way and no seasickness. There really is no comparison.

The Dry Tortugas islands are so small there is not enough land mass for the heating of the day to generate afternoon thunderstorms, so while Key West gets its fair share of beautiful weather, the Dry Tortugas generally get fewer storms

Air over a body of water is very stable. Even on a windy day, there is little or no turbulence on our flights.

Scuba divers; our aircraft are non-pressurized and fly so low (500feet), there is no need to worry about dive-time to flight-time. It is OK to dive in Key West in the morning and fly with us in the afternoon (we cannot carry dive tanks).

Wear polarized sunglasses on our flights. They cut out glare off the water, making it easier to spot marine life.

You are welcome to bring along beer and wine. It is illegal to drink alcohol in a Florida State Park but it is legal in a National Park (no open containers on the aircraft).

If you need a place to cool off at the Dry Tortugas the visitor’s center located in Fort Jefferson is air-conditioned.

The Dry Tortugas are in the Central Time Zone. We cross the time line 45 miles west of Key West. We actually land 15 minutes before we take off! To keep things simple the Park Service and Key West Seaplane Adventures operate on Eastern Time.

Dry Tortugas

What are the dry tortugas.

The Dry Tortugas National Park is one of the most amazing places on earth. Situated 70 miles from Key West, it is secluded from most of the pressures of human development. The water is crystal clear and the coral reefs are pristine. Some of the coral structures rise 50ft from the bottom straight up. Fish life is everywhere and there are species you will only find inside the park. Finz has one of the few permits to be able to legally dive inside the National Park, and will safely take you and your dive buddies to dive sites you could never forget.

A trip to the Dry Tortugas National Park with Finz starts early at the shop. Outfitted with Snorkel or Dive equipment we depart on our 2 hour boat ride. You can watch the many mangrove islands and spot wildlife such as dolphins and turtles from the comfort of our bean bag chairs. We typically arrive to Garden Key over an hour before the National Park Ferry. This gives us time on the island without 200 tourists.

Finz offers two types of adventures to the Dry Tortugas. Our private experience is the way to go for small families, or groups of friends. Our private trip is the most customizable and  exclusive. The trip is based on your group and can be adjusted easily to accommodate requests or changes in conditions. Finz Private Dry Tortugas trip is the only way to see Loggerhead Key inside the park. New this year is our option to book a public trip to the Dry Tortugas. This trip is more structured with a tight itinary. We offer either a Snorkel or Scuba trip but do not mix the two on our public trips. You can buy a single seat and still get to experience the tour of Fort Jefferson and the underwater park.

The Private Experience – After our tour we depart Garden Key and head for amazing snorkel or dive sites in the park. Since the trip is private we customize the itinerary and sites to match your groups preferences. We can visit Loggerhead Key and its lighthouse and have lunch on the beach, head out to Texas Rock for a scuba dive, or go back in time and explore a ship wreck from the early 1900’s. On the way home our captain will be on the lookout for more wildlife and will get you back to shore safely around 5pm. Just in time for Happy Hour at the restaurant near our shop.

Our Dry Tortugas National Park Private trip equally lends itself to both scuba diving and snorkeling. The shallow waters around Garden Key and Loggerhead Key are perfect for those that are both beginner or advanced snorkelers. Finz Dry Tortugas Private trip is the only day trip that will visit Loggerhead Key and its lighthouse.

The Public Experience – After our tour we depart Garden Key and head for 3 amazing snorkel or dive sites in the park. Our captain will choose the dive sites based on the conditions that day. Your Dive Master will lead the group of up to 6 on an amazing adventure and show you the wonders of the 99 percent of the park that is only accessable with Finz. Lunch is served on the boat between snorkel or dive stops. We will make every effort to accommodate requests but due to the nature of the trip we may be unable to. This trip reqiures 4 people to go and we reserve the right to cancel at any time.

The windjammer wreck is possibly the most beautiful shipwreck in the U.S. and is only accessible from a private boat or Finz Tortugas trips. Why limit yourself to only the 1 percent of the National Park that is above the water. With Finz you can explore more!

Finz Dry Tortugas charters are private or public and can accommodate up to 6 guests on our boats. Our Divemaster is in the water with your group, pointing out the hundreds of fish and corals in the park. This charter typically lasts 10 hours and is an all day adventure. Lunch is provided as well as snacks and water. It is an unforgettable experience that you will cherish for a lifetime.

The Dry Tortugas National Park Ferry is often sold out. Call us today to reserve a spot on our exclusive tour.

Places to Go

Bush Key

Visiting Dry Tortugas National Park during the late fall and early winter season affords a special opportunity to explore a rare undeveloped, subtropical island known as “Bush Key”. During the breeding season, this small island, only 16 acres in size, is home to birds not found elsewhere in the continental United States.

Garden_Key

Garden Key is the second largest island in the Dry Tortugas, about 14 acres in size, and has had the most human impact. Located on Garden Key is historic Fort Jefferson, one of the nation’s largest 19th century forts and a central cultural feature of Dry Tortugas National Park.

Driftwood at Loggerhead Key Lighthouse

Loggerhead Key

The largest island in the Dry Tortugas, Loggerhead Key is a site of shipwrecks, a significant lighthouse installation, and where the historic Carnegie Laboratory for Marine Ecology once stood. Named for its abundance of loggerhead sea turtles, Loggerhead Key has long been a haven for wildlife.

Swimming beaches

Swimming Beaches

Dry Tortugas National Park is situated at the southwest corner of the Florida Keys reef system, the third largest in the world.
