Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder and his new solo band The Earthlings will embark on their first tour in early 2022, beginning with Feb. 3-4 shows at New York’s Beacon Theatre. The eight-show trek, Vedder’s first solo jaunt in the U.S. since 2012, comes in support of his upcoming solo album, “Earthling,” due Feb. 11 from Seattle Surf/Republic.
As previously reported , the Earthlings made their live debut Sept. 24 at Vedder’s Ohana festival in Dana Point, Calif. The group includes guitarist Andrew Watt (who is also producing “Earthling”), multi-instrumentalists Josh Klinghoffer and Glen Hansard and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. Longtime The Who bassist Pino Palladino played with the Earthlings at Ohana, but due to scheduling conflicts, will be replaced on the 2022 tour by Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney.
At Ohana, the Earthlings debuted two songs from “Earthling” (“Long Way,” which is No. 10 this week on Billboard’s Adult Alternative Airplay chart, and “The Haves”), played a handful of Pearl Jam songs (“Porch,” “Corduroy”) and experimented with covers of the Pretenders’ “Precious,” Pete Townshend’s “Give Blood” and the Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go,” among others. Vedder also performed several songs solo, including tracks from his Golden Globe-winning 2007 “Into the Wild” soundtrack.

About Eddie Vedder Eddie Vedder has served as Pearl Jam’s frontman, in addition to a guitarist and primary lyricist, since 1990. Inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 as a member of Pearl Jam, Vedder’s trademark vocal style inspired a generation. His energetic and unvarnished stage presence coupled with his honest conversations with the audience led Pearl Jam as pioneers in live performances and social justice.
Vedder’s signature ethos carries into his solo work. His first project came out in 2007 with the soundtrack album for the film Into the Wild and earned him a Golden Globe for the song “Guaranteed.” In 2012, Vedder’s sophomore solo album, Ukulele Songs , received a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album. Most recently, he collaborated with Glen Hansard for the Flag Day Original Motion Picture soundtrack and has released tracks off his forthcoming solo album Earthling .
Eddie Vedder was born in Evanston, Ill., on December 23, 1964 where he became a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan before moving with his family to San Diego County in the mid-1970s. It was in southern California that Vedder began to play guitar and learned to surf.
In 1990, Vedder received a tape of a band from Seattle that needed a singer. Vedder wrote lyrics for three of the songs, mailed it back to Seattle, and the songs ultimately became the Pearl Jam songs “Alive”, “Footsteps” and “Once”. Vedder moved north and was recruited by Ament, Gossard and McCready to join their new band, known then as Mookie Blaylock before becoming Pearl Jam.
Vedder’s lyrics address many of the key issues of our times including gun violence, racism, and climate change. In addition to the activism inherent to the music, Vedder is an outspoken advocate for several progressive, social, and political causes, most notably abortion access and the environment. A longtime supporter of Surfrider Foundation, Vedder has most recently been vocal in banning offshore drilling along the US coast.
“Though some may think there should be a separation between art, music and politics, it should be reinforced that art can be a form of nonviolent protest,” Vedder says.
In addition to his activism, Vedder and his wife Jill McCormick Vedder co-founded the EB Research Partnership, dedicated to finding a cure for epidermolysis bullosa, a family of rare genetic disorders that affects the skin. The Vedder family is active in supporting both the work of the organization and the children who are impacted by the disorder.
Vedder and his wife reside in Seattle with their two daughters.

About Glen Hansard Glen Hansard is a singer-songwriter born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. Over the course of his career, he has released records as a member of The Frames , The Swell Season and as a solo artist under his own name. He continues to perform in all three of these outlets as time, opportunity and demand arise. He began his career performing at a young age in the pubs around Ireland with his Uncle Paul, getting an early view into the life of a musician. He went on to embrace busking on the streets of Dublin and met many of the fellow musicians who would become band members, collaborators and life-long friends. In 1991 he was part of the ensemble cast for the film, The Commitments and a year later, The Frames released their debut record, Another Love Song . The next fifteen years found Glen focusing on The Frames, who built a wide and loyal following. They became known for their powerful live shows and over their 30-year career have released six records to critical and universal praise. In 2007 Glen found himself acting again, this time in the indie film, Once . Initially brought on to score the film – centered around a musician in search of fame – Glen found himself cast as the lead, “guy”. The other primary role in the film – that of “girl” – went to Marketa Irglova. Their composition, “ Falling Slowly ”, written for the film, went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song . Together the two would christen their collaboration The Swell Season and continue to perform, tour, and release music together. In 2012 Glen released his twenty years in the making solo record , Rhythm and Repose to critical acclaim. The same year found his music from Once finding an even larger audience as Once the Musical captured the Tony for Best Musical . It went on to win eight Tony’s in total, and in the UK won two Laurence Olivier Awards including Best Original Score for Hansard and Irglova. Glen has released four solo records since 2012 including the Grammy nominated Didn’t He Ramble . In 2020, Glen began working on music with Eddie Vedder for what would become the soundtrack to the 2021 film, Flag Day . Directed by and starring Sean Penn, Glen and Eddie co-wrote eight original songs for the film including the lead song “ My Father’s Daughter ”, sung by Olivia Vedder. Outside of music, Glen has been a constant voice over the years for the homeless in Dublin. His shows at Vicar Street around Christmas, along with the now famous “ Christmas Busk ” have helped raised both awareness and money for a number of charities. In 2015 he embarked on The Camino Voyage , joining a crew who sailed from Ireland to Spain in a traditional Irish curragh. He has said it was one of the toughest and most rewarding things he has ever done in his life. More recently Glen joined the Footsbarn Traveling Theater to appear in a number of productions including a rendering of James Stephens, The Crock of Gold . And in 2019 Glen traveled to Italy to be part of the cast Cyrano , which was directed by Joe Wright and is set for release in 2022. Glen is in a constant state of motion whether it be creatively or physically. He currently splits his time between Ireland and France and is looking forward to getting back on tour, specifically the stage where he is most at home.

Eddie Vedder’s Star-Studded ‘Earthling’ Is a Reminder of His Individuality
By Kory Grow
Eddie Vedder has always seemed like a singer inextricably bound to his band. Since the beginnings of Pearl Jam, he has flexed his warm baritone with an intensity or a sensitivity that perfectly matched his fellow musicians’ loose fury and anxious jamming; Vedder’s voice depends on Pearl Jam’s music, and their songs demand his voice. Whenever he has ventured into the wilds of a solo career, he has done so in the least Pearl Jam-y ways possible, whether it was the folkie mandolin musings of “Rise” or the beach-fire serenades of Ukulele Songs. No matter how sparse a song sounded, Vedder’s voice resounded in ways that recalled Pearl Jam. You could tell he was doing his best to tiptoe around the loud rock that defines his main gig.
On his latest solo outing, Earthling, Vedder unapologetically backspaces onto Pearl Jam’s turf with 13 tracks that recall both the band’s punk energy and its mainstream-rock aspirations in a way that feels distinctively Vedderish. It’s his most revealing solo release, since, musically, it feels more like the Vedder we’ve known for 30 years and not a purposeful departure from Pearl Jam.
For the project, he teamed with Andrew Watt, a jack-of-all-trades producer who has proven equally deft at fashioning pop (Miley Cyrus), rap (Post Malone), and rock (Ozzy Osbourne’s surprisingly fun 2020 comeback, Ordinary Man ), all while maintaining each artist’s uniqueness. As with Osbourne’s album, Watt assembled a core band for Earthling to help Vedder write the songs, and even though the ensemble features former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer and perennial Chili drummer Chad Smith, the results sound nothing like those two musicians’ other band. Instead the group, which includes Watt, complements Vedder’s voice in ways that only Pearl Jam has previously done.
Vedder’s hallmark has always been the way he could sound both confident and vulnerable at the same time — has anyone sung about wanting to explode a neutron bomb more plaintively than Vedder did on Pearl Jam’s “Wishlist”? — and the moments where he hits that balance on Earthling make for the best songs on the record. On “Brother the Cloud,” he grapples with the loss of a loved one (possibly Chris Cornell) as he wrestles with the throes of grief — “Understand it was not easy for my friend,” he sings to anyone listening before later turning to inexplicable anger: “Put your arms around my brother, my friend/Say for me … fuck you … what are friends for?” But the whole thing is disarming since he sounds hopeful and even upbeat throughout the song. On the next song, “Fallout Today,” he parses human fragility, musing on “second chances granted one more time,” before conceding, “We all need to share and shake the pain” — all over a gently melancholic acoustic-guitar ballad. If it weren’t for Watt’s Beach Boys–style harmonies, the song could have easily fit on Pearl Jam’s Vitalogy.
Editor’s picks
The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.
Meanwhile, the heavy riffing of “Power of Right” and “Good and Evil” feel like a more refined take on the grunge of the band’s Vs. as Vedder sounds rejuvenated, howling in time to Smith’s locomotive rhythms. Smith’s drumming even takes lead on “Rose of Jericho,” another hard rocker, with a funky, slightly off-kilter groove that inspires a driving riff and an aggressive screed from Vedder about environmentalism that even cites Henry David Thoreau. It’s the same anger Vedder had about Trump on Pearl Jam’s last album, 2020’s Gigaton, but it’s more personal this time, revealing new sides of the singer with each song.
Several tracks feel like Invisible Man exhibitions of his DNA, as he inhabits the sensibilities of some of his favorite musicians without fully giving himself over to plagiarism. For any other artist, “Long Way” would sound like Tom Petty cosplay with its lush acoustic chords and gentle chorus, nasally dragging out the word “ freeeeeway ” — the Heartbreakers’ Benmont Tench even plays organ on the song — but Vedder’s voice, with its rugged, lived-in weariness, makes it his own. Similarly, “The Dark” owes a debt to Bruce Springsteen with its hammering, Max Weinberg–like drumbeat, fuzzy synths, and the promise “I’ll find you in the dark … let me lift you out of the dark,” but Vedder sells it in a way that feel like it’s his own.
Earthling’s guests figure heavily into how Vedder reveals new sides of himself, since most of his reverence comes through in nods and winks rather than fealty. Stevie Wonder plays fluttering harmonica throughout “Try,” an upbeat rockabilly number about forgiveness, and while it’s a scene-stealer, it never distracts from the song. Tench appears here and there throughout the album, usually sweetening the arrangements. And “Mrs. Mills” owes such a debt to the grandiose pomp of Sgt. Pepper that it name-checks Paul McCartney and features Ringo Starr as a guest on drums.

It’s only on “Picture,” a duet with Elton John, where Vedder gives in to his fandom. The track is all Elton-y country schmaltz (and, as with even the best of John’s music, sometimes it’s a little too schmaltzy). But it’s the only moment on Earthling that doesn’t feel distinctly Vedderish, other than in the lyrics, which sing about striving for love and hope. Those lyrics are the song’s only anchor to Earthling’s central theme.
Throughout the album, Vedder uses each song to plead for empathy — the quality that makes earthlings human. On the uplifting album opener, “Invincible,” he sings to listeners that they’re “more than just particles” and that they should feel important, and he bares his soul even more, showing forgiveness, on the final track, “On My Way,” on a virtual duet with his biological father, Edward Severson Jr., a man he was estranged from for most of his life. “When we love, we’re invincible,” Vedder sings, reprising a lyric from the first song, this time wrapping the words around his dad’s voice. It’s a strikingly personal moment for Vedder, the type of vulnerability he has always tilted toward with Pearl Jam. Now that he’s embraced it, he has just raised the stakes for his Pearl Jam bandmates.

Surprise Albums: 16 Drops That Shocked The Music World
Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder formed his new live outfit in 2021 to support the solo album of the same name – his first solo effort since 2011’s Ukelele Music – which received praise from critics and fans alike.
The band is something of a supergroup, consisting of the core group who created the album: drummer Chad Smith (of the Red Hot Chili Peppers ), keyboardist/guitarist/vocalist Josh Klinghoffer (who has performed with both Pearl Jam and RHCP), bassist Chris Chaney (currently of Jane’s Addiction), and guitarist Andrew Watt, who produced the album and will produce Pearl Jam’s next effort. The album also featured some impressive guest appearances by musical royalty Stevie Wonder, Elton John, and Ringo Starr.
Vedder gave the group its live premiere at the 2021 Ohana Festival and followed that with a short winter tour with a guest appearance and tour support from Tony Award-winning Irish musician Glen Hasard, of The Frames and The Swell Season. The band played setlists made up of material from Earthling , as well as fan favorites from Pearl Jam, a smattering of Vedder’s other side project music, and a healthy dose of cover songs as any Pearl Jam fan might expect.
Before the Earthling dates in October, Vedder will hit the stage with Pearl Jam for a North American tour for the month of September, starting in Canada and ending in Colorado.
Pearl Jam has also released a new music video for “ Quick Escape ,” in celebration of their new Gigatron Live Edition , an 11-track live album from their 2021 tour.
