Do you want to add some education to your travels? Road Scholar , formerly Elderhostel International, is a world leader in educational travel for adults. Even with the name change, however, it is still the same great service that will let you discover and learn about the world via travel.

A Brief History of Elderhostels

Founded by Marty Knowlton and David Bianco in 1975, Elderhostel International began as just an idea as the two men spoke after Marty returned from a European walking tour that lasted four years. During that time, Marty traveled with only a backpack, staying in youth hostels.

Creating Senior Hostels

After returning home, the former educator and free-spirited activist told David Bianco, a university administrator, about his journey. He also talked of the affordable youth hostels where he met fellow travelers and of the folk schools of Scandinavia. In the folk schools, senior citizens shared their skills and traditions with the younger generations, passing down their country's folklore, music, dance, and folk art. He told of seniors throughout Europe being active in their communities, and the two men wondered why American seniors quietly disappeared into retirement.

Inexpensive Elder Hostels and Education

It was then that David Bianco decided that his campus did not need a youth hostel. It needed an elder hostel instead. The two men developed a program combining inexpensive accommodations with interesting not-for-credit classes. The first year, 1975, five New Hampshire universities and colleges hosted 220 senior citizens in campus elderhostels.

Growing Into Elder Hostels in Europe

Word of Elderhostel programs quickly spread, and by 1980 there were programs in every state and most provinces of Canada. The following year Elderhostel offered international learning programs in Great Britain, Scandinavia, and Mexico.

Growth of Programs

As Elderhostel International continued growing in numbers, they introduced types of travel learning adventures including:

  • Programs for grandparents and grandchildren
  • Day of Discovery one day programs
  • Road Scholar series of adventurous learning programs

Today, Road Scholar offers a vast array of different programs in more than ninety countries, all fifty states, and aboard ships. Travelers no longer stay in college dorms; instead, accommodations are in hotels and inns throughout the world.

Elderhostel International Becomes Road Scholar

Although the Elderhostel International Corporation still exists as the parent company, beginning in 2009 all the programs of Elderhostel International became known as Road Scholar. Remaining a not-for-profit 501c corporation, Road Scholar depends on private donations.

Learn Through Travel

Road Scholar excursions are appropriate for seniors who enjoy travel and who want to explore interests or learn about different cultures or locations. Though many of the trips are meant to be active, there are some trips designed specifically for lower activity seniors.

Cost of Traveling

The cost of the trips through Road Scholar vary widely depending on:

  • The location and experience you choose
  • Whether you book travel through Road Scholar or another provider
  • Whether you qualify for a scholarship or grant
  • If you select an experience that is on a special sale

The "Value Promise"

Road Scholar makes the claim that their excursions are around 20% less expensive per night than comparable trips from other providers.

Pros and Cons

Reviews appearing online of the Road Scholar experiences are largely positive, yet some criticisms appear. Among the negative comments, the purchase of additional insurance is mentioned as a negative aspect of the program as is rude staff; however, the positive comments far outweigh the negative comments on Yelp . Stride Travel reviewers give a cumulative 4.5 out of 5 with 87% of reviewers recommending Road Scholar. Again, reviewers on the site mention problems with the additional insurance as a concern. Insurance is brought up again by reviewers on SiteJabber , though the overall reviews are mostly positive.

The Insurance Issue

Optional trip protection is offered through Road Scholar, and it's a fairly standard policy. It reimburses you if a covered problem prohibits you from taking the trip or forces you home early. Most of the negative reviews mentioning the insurance are about people who had to cancel their trips but hadn't purchased the trip protection, and as a result, felt taken advantage of when their money wasn't refunded. Trip protection is typical when booking trips through any provider, so this is not an issue exclusive to Road Scholar.

Travel Opportunities for Seniors

Since its beginning, Elderhostel International was, and still is, dedicated to continued learning through travel. The organization is one of few that encourages seniors to travel the country, as well as the world, and provides many programs to help seniors do just that.

The Scoop: What to Know About Trafalgar Tours

Part of what we do here at TourScoop is use our (human) travel expertise to vet tour companies so you have an easy way to get a bunch of trustworthy information all in one place. Today we’re digging into Road Scholar, a popular tour company that’s been around for nearly 50 years. Read on to find everything you need to know to confidently make the decision about whether it’s a good fit for you.

Road Scholar (previously known as Elderhostel) is a tour company with a difference: Since 1975 the company has been run as a nonprofit organization with an educational mission as its primary focus. That means a few things: since it’s a nonprofit, Road Scholar offers excellent value (tours aren’t priced for profit). I also like that it’s unusual among tour companies because it offers both financial aid and caregiver grants. And since it’s education-driven, the tour operator attracts a particularly curious and educated group of travelers, including many retired educators.

Road Scholar’s 4,000 offerings include small group tours, grandparent-grandchild trips, cruises, private jet adventures, and tours focused on passions including birding, food and drink, and history.

TourScoop Takeaways: Road Scholar

Two people on a Road Scholar tour focusing on the Civil Rights Movement

  • Continents Covered: 7
  • Tour Size Average: Road Scholar’s small group programs max out at 24 travelers, but the company also runs larger programs with hundreds of participants who are then broken into small groups for activities.
  • Tour Types: Coach, ship, plane, train

How to Book

Road Scholar tours can be booked directly through Road Scholar ; here are all the ways you can contact the organization for information about trips.

Credibility Check

Road Scholar is a BBB accredited charity that meets the standards for charity accountability, and has a low complaint number and a high response-to-issues ratio. It has a rating of 4.2 out of 5 on Facebook . Tour-focused online travel agency TourStride past guests gives Road Scholar a 4.4 out of 5.

Tour Destinations

Road Scholar operates tours on seven continents and to nearly 100 countries. In the U.S., it offers itineraries to most states, and internationally, its most popular destinations include Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, and Italy.

Learning about chemistry on a Road Scholar Grandparent-grandchild trip

Road Scholar offers hundreds of programs on a variety of topics, with thousands of departures annually. Since it’s a nonprofit organization with an educational mission, everything it does is about learning, and it weaves in educational visits, lectures, and events into every trip.

On the website, you can filter trips by hobbies or what you want to learn about, from Military History to Native American Studies, Birding, Pickleball, or another topic. You can also filter the course catalog by activity level, from “Easy Going” to  “Outdoor: Challenging.”

Road Scholar also offers Adventures Afloat (cruises), skip-gen programs geared to grandparents and grandchildren traveling together, and virtual tours that range from one-hour lectures to multi-day online adventures.

Tour Guides

As an education-focused tour organization, Road Scholar refers to its group leaders and instructors as faculty . Faculty members–many of whom have been working with Road Scholar for a decade or more–are local experts with years of experience in travel and academics. Group leaders receive initial training and receive yearly professional development to ensure they’re at the top of their game.

In addition to faculty, tour participants meet a broad range of experts on tour, experts that range from shrimp boat captains to award-winning authors.

Inclusions/Extras

Road Scholar programs are all-inclusive and have no optional extras or hidden expenses. The price of a tour includes:

  • Accommodations,
  • Experienced Group Leader
  • Expert-led lectures and field trips
  • Most meals (some meals during free time not included)
  • Gratuities throughout the program, including group leader gratuities
  • Road Scholar Assurance Plan   (24-hour assistance in the event of an emergency during a program and insurance for emergency medical evacuation)

Flights to and from the tour are not included in base program prices, but Road Scholar will book flights for participants traveling internationally. Flights booked through Road Scholar also include complimentary airport transfers.

Typical Travelers

If you don’t count kids in the mix on the Grandparent and Family programs, the average age of a Road Scholar participant is 72. But trips generally include a wide range of older travelers from people in their 50s through 90s. About 30% of participants are solo travelers, and of that 30% about 85% are women traveling on their own. Road Scholar trips are generally reported to be very welcoming to solo travelers.

Communication

Once you’ve booked a tour with Road Scholar, the company sends regular emails leading up to trip departures. You can also access your trip information online: once you’re enrolled in a program, all trip information is accessible via your online account.

Road Scholar’s U.S.-based contact center (800-454-5768) is open 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (ET), Monday through Friday. Monday is the contact center’s busiest day, so to avoid long wait times, call midweek or at the end of the week if you can). Road Scholar has callback feature, which allows you to save your place in the queue without having to wait on the phone–a representative calls you back as soon as it’s your turn in line.

Loyalty Program

Because Road Scholar is a nonprofit organization, discounts are not offered, including for repeat travelers. But the company is dedicated to making travel affordable for more travelers, and offers financial aid and caregiver grants .

Private Options

Groups made up of between 18 and 24 people can reserve private departures of existing itineraries with Road Scholar. If you organize a group of 20 or more, you can take advantage of group discounts or free travel for one person.

Sustainability Efforts

Road Scholar offsets some of the carbon emissions created through travel on its programs. It invests in projects including rainforest preservation in Brazil, methane gas recapture in Florida, and reforestation in Kenya. The company also tries to use sustainability certified hotels, locally owned services, and restaurants that serve locally sourced meals whenever possible.

Health and Safety Practices

Road Scholar has partners on the ground worldwide who monitor all areas visited by the company. If concerns arise, Road Scholar will find replacement content or cancel the program, depending on the severity and location of the issue.

What Is an Elderhostel?

Vacation on a budget.

by SilverandSmart | Feb 7, 2024

What Is an Elderhostel?

While hostels are typically cheap, no-frills places for young students, travelers and workers to stay, an elder hostel is something slightly different.

The term elder hostel comes from Elderhostel, the original name of a non-profit organization which has since changed its name to Road Scholar. Road Scholar began in 1975 as a learning and lodging program for older adults. These days, Road Scholar provides programs in all 50 states in the United States, as well as in 150 other countries.

Road Scholar adventures emphasize education, providing participants with a chance to learn about the places they visit. The trips vary considerable in terms of length. Some last for only a few days; others last for longer than a month. There are many trips that last for a week or two.

How Much Do Elderhostel Trips Cost?

The price of a Road Scholar trip varies considerably, just as the lengths of the trips do. Some are only a few hundred dollars, but others can cost up to several thousands of dollars, especially the ones that last for more than a month.

The price includes transportation, lodging and meals, so it really is a good deal. However, even a good deal can be too expensive if you simply don’t have the funds. Road Scholar offers scholarships and caregiver grants to help make the programs even more affordable.

Programs Designed for Older Adults

Most of the people who participate in Road Scholar Programs are over 50 years old. Although many people travel with a friend or spouse, it’s also common for people to travel alone. When doing so, you can choose to have a private room or to get a roommate.

Each trip comes with an activity level rating that ranges from “easy going” to “outdoor: spirited.” When selecting a program, make sure the activity level is appropriate for you.

Exploring the World with Elderhostels and Road Scholar

what is an elderhostel

These experiences can enhance positive service experiences, strengthen relationships, and provide extraordinary access to a wealth of knowledge and cultural enrichment.

Evolution from Elderhostel to Road Scholar

The term “elder hostel” was originally coined from the non-profit organization Elderhostel, which was founded in 1975. Over the years, this organization underwent fundamental changes and rebranded itself as Road Scholar.

Road Scholar’s programs are tailored to cater to the specific needs and interests of older travelers. They offer a diverse range of program offerings, from short field trips to extended journeys that span several weeks. This variety ensures that there’s something for everyone, regardless of their preferred travel duration or activity level.

Learning Adventures and Educational Travel

One of the key features that sets Road Scholar programs apart is their focus on education. Participants have the unique opportunity to learn about the history, culture, and traditions of the places they visit, often from local experts and expert instructors. These programs stimulate discourse and provide participants with an insider’s perspective, enriching their travel experiences in profound ways.

Throughout the trips, participants engage in a wide range of activities and excursions designed to provide extraordinary access to historical sites, museums, and natural wonders. These experiences not only promote personal development but also create lasting memories and strengthen relationships among participants.

Affordability and Inclusivity

While the quality and educational value of Road Scholar programs are great, it’s important to consider the costs. The price of these programs can vary widely,

depending on the destination, duration, and level of comfort. Some programs are quite affordable, costing only a few hundred dollars, making them accessible to a wide range of older adults.

However, longer and more exotic trips can be cost several thousand dollars. While these programs provide excellent value, it’s important to consider your budget and financial circumstances.

Alternatives to Road Scholar

While Road Scholar is a leader in the field of educational travel for older adults, there are other organizations like Overseas Adventure Travel that also cater to this demographic. These alternatives offer a variety of vacation packages designed to explore the world and provide unique experiences for those over 50. Exploring different options can help you find the right fit for your travel preferences and interests.

Learn as you go on Elderhostel tours

Elderhostel tours offer older travelers educational tours all around the world.

So you’ve escaped middle age and are ready for the long calm of retirement.

What next? If you spend too much time rocking on the front porch, will your brain droop into autopilot?

One antidote for this is educational travel. Visit those exotic places that were only daydreams during your nose-to-the-grindstone years, and learn while you do it. Better still, travel with a group of people who share your interests and your age bracket.

One organization specializing in this kind of travel is Elderhostel, which says it is dedicated to providing “exceptional learning opportunities to adults at a remarkable value.” Translation: travel with other seniors, learn interesting stuff, eat decent food and stay in comfortable lodging, at a price that won’t turn your retirement budget to mush.

Intrigued by this idea, my wife and I picked Elderhostel for our first educational travel venture, a two-week tour of Israel. We liked it enough to sign up for a second Elderhostel gig, this one to float the tributaries of the Amazon River in Peru this spring.

What’s the attraction to this type of travel? The advantages include:

— Package price. Elderhostel pitches a single price without hidden costs. Pay once and the essential costs for your trip are covered.

— Learning. Lectures by experts allow you to learn more, and be more immersed in a local culture, than you would as an average tourist.

— Birds-of-a-feather. It’s fun and comfortable to travel with other seniors who generally share your interest in travel and learning.

Elderhostel is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1975 on five college campuses in New Hampshire, based on the idea of inexpensive lodging and noncredit classes. By 1980, participation grew to 20,000 people in 50 states and Canada, and in 1981 Elderhostel offered its first international programs. Today Elderhostel says it attracts more than 160,000 participants annually to nearly 8,000 tour packages in more than 90 countries.

Elderhostel says the average cost of programs in the United States and Canada is a little over $100 per day, while international programs, not including airfare, average a bit over $200 per day. Elderhostel emphasizes a package price that covers meals, taxes, gratuities, lodging, lectures, excursions, activities and travel within a program, such as shuttles to various sites.

Participants provide their own transportation to domestic programs. For international programs, you can book the flights yourself or have Elderhostel do it.

Rates vary widely by destination and type of trip. My wife and I paid just under $10,000 to visit Israel. Our planned trip to Peru will cost around $11,600 for two. Both price tags include round-trip airfare from the U.S., and our lodging, food and tours. But Elderhostel also offers programs for less than $600. You can study “The Cajun Experience” in Louisiana for $547 per person, including meals, five nights of hotel lodging and expert-led sessions ranging from how to dance the Cajun waltz to the history of Acadian migration from Nova Scotia to south Louisiana. You provide your own transportation to and from the program site in Lafayette, La.

While Elderhostel makes no claim to five-star luxury, we gave good marks in Israel to our hotels, food, guides and expert lecturers.

One member of our group, 64-year-old Bill Stovall, a retired business analyst from Thorp, Wash., said fancy food and lodging aren’t the goal. “We take these tours for the learning and exposure to a different culture,” he said.

Our group hit the usual tour stops from the heights of Masada to the salty depths of the Dead Sea. What set it apart was hearing lectures from an array of expert speakers: a prominent Israeli archaeologist, a leading Christian clergyman from Jerusalem, a Palestinian, a retired Israel Defense Forces commander, a former Israeli intelligence officer, an Ethiopian refugee, a longtime kibbutz resident, an artist specializing in Jewish mysticism and a holocaust survivor who was a childhood friend of Anne Frank. These discussions ranged far beyond anything we could have arranged on our own.

Stovall’s wife Lora, 61, a retired financial adviser to local governments, was pleased that the tour emphasized learning over typical tourist shopping sprees. “We want experiences, not material goods from our travels,” she said.

Others enjoyed being immersed in an ancient culture. “Our guides were conservative, observant Jews. One of the satisfying characteristics of this trip was being included in some of the Sabbath rituals they shared,” said Mary Barton, 83, a retired homemaker and teacher from Louisville, Ky. She was traveling with her husband Clarence, 79, a retired hospital chaplain and adjunct professor at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Our tour group was a potpourri of Jews, Christians and people of no strong religious leanings. This variety was an attraction for Esther Weinstein, 63, a retired public school music teacher from Henderson, Nev., making her fourth Elderhostel trip. Though she was raised in the Jewish faith, Weinstein thought she could have a richer experience by traveling with a mixed religious group. And she liked the idea that Elderhostel tries to pair up those who are traveling solo. “The thought of being in the midst of a ‘sheltered’ group was also reassuring to me as a solo female traveler,” she said.

While the emphasis is on over-55 travelers, Elderhostel has added intergenerational programs for grandparents and their grandchildren. It also accepts younger participants as long as they are accompanying someone who is 55 or older.

Our group included a family foursome. Vere Chappell, 78, a retired philosophy professor from Pelham, Mass., and his wife Sheryl, 77, were joined by their 41-year-old son, Vere “Bogie” Chappell, and his wife Lita-Luise Chappell, 55, of Laguna Hills, Calif. Lita-Luise Chappell said their group seemed to be a good example for others, showing how family members could share and adapt.

Before taking any trip, especially overseas, research health insurance options. Medicare, with some exceptions, does not cover health care during travel outside the United States. For specifics, check www.medicare.gov or the 2009 “Medicare and You” guide.

Your supplemental policy may provide additional coverage, but you may want to consider buying travel health insurance. There are many options and the choice can be confusing. For starters, go to the U.S. State Department’s travel page, www.travel.state.gov and click on “Tips for Traveling Abroad.” Or check with a travel agent or state consumer protection agency.

Elderhostel offers a Travel Assistance Plan that covers a range of emergency travel assistance including medical evacuation, and on international trips, medical escort service and limited medical coverage for accidental injury or illness.

Editoral Review of Road Scholar

Founded in 1975 as Elderhostel, Road Scholar took its new name in 2010. The name change was meant to better reflect the non-profit educational travel organization’s mission, which is to offer lifelong learning opportunities to adults.

Besides it’s a clever play on words (the takeoff on Rhodes Scholar), “Road” stands for the journeys the group offers, while “Scholar” indicates the deep devotion to learning that participants possess.

Why Choose a Tour With Road Scholar?

Senior travelers on Road Scholar tour taking a selfie

On a Road Scholar tour you can expect a lot of unique cultural, artistic, historic, and local insights. Meet artisans, learn local crafts, and feel the camaraderie of being around other travelers who enjoy the educational aspect of travel.

The original Elderhostel grew out of the vision of the late Marty Knowlton, who spent four years backpacking around Europe while staying in youth hostels -- and wanted American adults to have access to similar cultural experiences.

If you consider yourself a lifelong learner and want to spend your vacation amongst others who share your passion for travel and education, Road Scholar is the place for you.

Covid-19 Travel Update for Road Scholar

In 2020, Road Scholar made the tough decision to temporarily suspend their programs through January 2021 due to the safey concerns surrounding the coronavirus.

Given the Road Scholar traveler age range, the health risks could be severe. Not to mention the interest in international and group travel is significantly lower for this group at the present time.

You may enroll in future trips with the offer of a full refund with cancellation up to 90 days prior to the trip departure. This offer is currently in place through October 31st, 2020.

Road Scholar has a number of virtual classroom options available in a range of durations.

14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

elderhostel travel

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

I am a senior who went on elderhostels many times in the 80's and 90's. I chose which one to apply for primarily because of its intellectual focus and secondly because of the area. For example, I chose one that focused on Nero's Rome, one that focused on medieval music, one that focused on people of the Mekong, and one that focused on hands-on culinary arts. None of the items you now list focus on intellectual content. Now you seem to present choices like the Sunday travel section of any newspaper. I am deeply disappointed. Gwen Brewer

I understand what you are saying, but there are a few. For example, Three Friends in Charlottesville, VA. The program is presented by William and Mary College.

Matthew - I would ask TA to remove your address from your post for privacy.

Posters can advise you through this site or via a pm.

I would love a schedule of up coming travel, not in the United States. I'm new at this site so any direction would be appreciated

Elderhostel is now called Roads Scholar. Many universities run RS out of their outreach divisions. Check out this link:

http://www.roadscholar.org/

You need to go through their offerings, but I think you'll find what you want.

You say: <<None of the items you now list focus on intellectual content.>> This is not really the case. You need to use the Advanced Search to have better satisfaction. On the home page, look to the top right, just under the "keyword or program" field. You will see "click here for Advanced Search."

Once you go there, you can refine by program type. That section has a green bar. Choose the criteria for each section on that page and get your results. It is that way that you can find the programs with the familiar educational component.

In your post, you use the word "you" quite a few times. Posting here, and writing to "you" as though TA is Elderhostel is not fitting. If you want to tell Road Scholar something directly, you need to contact them.

As a college administrator I ran Elderhostel programs, among other duties, for several years in the 80's-90's. THe original poster is correct that programs used to heavily depend upon lecture/subject/field trip content. They featured heavily in course descriptions in the catalog. I worked very hard to emphasize the special attributes of our local area: history, wildlife, and literature written about our area, etc.. THe lecture component was what often drew people: first geographic location, then subject content based on participants' evaluations. Our programs were low cost because I was able to negotiate very deep discounts on mid-priced hotel rooms in "shoulder season". Back then, each sponsoring college/university had something unique to offer , some had nicer accomodations, like my program, others had more sites to explore on one's own time that did not require your own transportation. Each sponsor offered something unique. As the administrator of these programs, the most disheartening thing a participant could say was "well at such and such a program we got x" (something we could not offer). Each sponsor offered something unique and different and no sponsor could possibly offer "it all": mountain views, beaches, perfect rain free days, gourmet meals (and some programs DID have those) and more luxurious accomodations. Each program had to work to keep prices low but quality as high as possible. The quality of the lecturers/program staff were as important to me as the amenities and I know we gave excellent value for price.

Since I live outside the USA now and have not been on an Elderhostel trip since I retired, I cannot comment on value these days or subject content. I hope most people find these educational trips as pleasureable and informative as did the overwhelming majority who took ours.
