British Airways utilizes a pretty classic baggage allowance system, dependent on cabin class.

Fees for additional luggage per piece depend on when you purchase your baggage allowance, your cabin class, and lastly (at times), whether you’re flying out of Gatwick/Stanstead or any other route.

The British Airways baggage policy can get a little confusing at times — we hope our guide clears things up a bit!

All checked bags must adhere to a max weight of 51 pounds (23 kg) for economy and premium economy or 70 pounds (32 kg) for business and frst class fares and must adhere to max dimensions of 35 x 30 x 17 inches (90 x 75 x 43 cm). Check the airline’s baggage calculator for your accurate allowance.

When flying British Airways, all checked bags must not exceed 51 pounds (23 kg) for economy and premium economy passengers and 70 pounds (32 kg) for business and first class passengers. Bags that are heavier than these standard allowances will be subject to excess baggage fees. Standard carry-on baggage cannot weigh more than 51 pounds (23 kg).

Luggage is included with British Airways on all fares apart from its economy basic fare (hand baggage only). The standard allowance is 1 bag (50 pounds/23 kg) for economy (apart from selected routes which allow 2), 2 bags for premium economy (50 pounds/23 kg each), 2 bags for business class (70 pounds/32 kg) and 3 bags for first class (70 pounds/32 kg).

How big can a carry-on bag be for British Airways?

British Airways allows passengers to bring 1 standard piece of carry-on that must not exceed 22 x 18 x 10 inches (56 x 45 x 25 cm) with a maximum weight of 51 pounds (23 kg). British Airways' Baggage Allowance: 5 Things You Need To Know

  • British Airways offers a generous baggage allowance for passengers in all travel classes, with weights ranging from 23kg to 32kg per bag.
  • Carry-on bags must adhere to size restrictions, but weight restrictions are more lenient and bags can weigh up to 23kg.
  • Oversized or heavy items may incur additional charges or need to be shipped as cargo, and passengers should check with partner airlines for their specific baggage allowances.

Britain’s national airline, British Airways, is known for its hospitality and service on the ground and in the air. Part of the airline's service is its baggage allowance for air passengers. As a full-service airline, British Airways takes pride in offering a generous baggage allowance in all travel classes.

Simple Flying provides baggage information essential for passengers traveling with the airline, as highlighted by British Airways.

British Airways checked baggage allowance

The allowance varies based on the fare type and cabin.

The checked baggage allowance differs based on the fare type and cabin. Passengers traveling on the Economy Basic fare do not get a free checked baggage allowance. Standard Economy and Premium Economy passengers are entitled to checked baggage allowance, up to 23 kg (51 lb) per bag. Business and First class passengers receive a generous weight allowance of up to 32 kg (70 lb) per bag.

All passengers can purchase additional baggage before or upon check-in. Notably, the cost of additional baggage and the number of bags that can be purchased depending on the class of travel and destination. British Airways also follows a rather strict baggage size policy for checked baggage.

British Airways carry-on size

The airline restricts passengers for handbag and cabin bag sizes.

British Airways provides a specific allowance for carry-on bags. Passengers must particularly follow size restrictions for carry-on bags. The airline provides cabin bags and handbag dimensions (height, width, and depth). However, unlike many large international airlines that weigh carry-on bags upon check-in, British Airways allows generous weight for the carry-on bags.

Which Airlines Have The Most Generous Checked Baggage Allowances?

Passengers can take up to 23 kg (51 lb) in the carry-on as long as the size of the bag is within the allowed dimensions. The airline may penalize oversized cabin bags, the cost of which depends on fare type and destination. It is noteworthy that the listed dimensions include straps and wheels, particularly on the cabin bags.

British Airways baggage contents allowance

Out-of-gauge or oversized items must be treated differently.

The airline allows passengers to travel with almost anything (except for restricted items), including sports gear and music instruments. When traveling with sports or music equipment, passengers must ensure that the size of the equipment is within the allowable limit. Small equipment can be taken onboard as a carry-on bag.

Oversized equipment can be allowed, but passengers may need to take additional steps. Anything larger or heavier must be secured properly and shipped as cargo. Other out-of-gauge pieces, such as snow sports bags, must be dropped off at the oversized baggage area at least 90 minutes before the flight time.

Extra weight or size

The airline charges for overweight or oversized bags.

The extra checked baggage allowance depends on the space available in the aircraft. One may wonder how much space one or two extra bags would require in an aircraft. However, airplanes must follow precise weight and balance to ensure a safe flight.

The cost of extra checked baggage depends on the class of travel and destination. Passengers are always restricted to the number of bags/pieces they can check in. In terms of carry-on bags, most passengers are allowed to carry up to two items. According to the airline,

“If you have more than two pieces of hand baggage, or they’re over the permitted size , you may have to put your larger bags into the hold as checked baggage.”

Putting the carry-on bags in the luggage hold also means extra cost per piece.

Check out all the latest European aviation news here.

Baggage allowance on partner airlines

Varies based on the flight number.

British Airways’ baggage policy on partner airlines varies based on the ticket type, the longest flight in the itinerary, and the first airline the passenger checks in to.

According to the airline,

“If your flight number begins with anything other than ‘BA’ (e.g. AA123456X), you’re flying with one of our partners and your baggage allowances may be different. If a journey with connecting flights includes ‘BA’ and other airline codes, your baggage allowance is generally determined by the airline that operates the longest flight in your itinerary.”

British Airways Is Now Letting American Express Cardholders Earn Tier Points On Spending

British Airways recommends passengers on partner airlines to check with the airline operating the first and/or the longest leg of the journey to avoid any confusion.

What are your thoughts on British Airways’ baggage policy for various travel classes? Have you traveled with the airline recently? Share your experience in the comments section.

Review: British Airways EuroTraveller from Glasgow to London

During my time in the BA lounge in Glasgow , the flight was progressively delayed, but eventually it was time to board. We headed on down the aerobridge to the plane.

BA1479 – Glasgow to London Heathrow (GLA-LHR) 2 July 2022 Airbus A320 – G-EUUG Seat: Economy 17F Departure: 10:50 Arrival: 12:20

Once on board, I headed down towards the back of the aircraft and found my seat. After putting my bag in the overhead, I sat down and took stock of my surroundings.

The EuroTraveller Seat and Cabin

On this aircraft, the seats are all the same, no matter whether you’re flying Club Europe or EuroTraveller. There is plenty of room if you’re not too tall or too well built.

Dance of the Baggage Containers

It’s not often that I sit on the right hand side of the aircraft, which is the side the baggage is loaded. I am usually also a bit further forward so I enjoyed seeing the luggage being loaded outside my window.

As you can see above in the two minute video, it’s quite a well oiled operation, getting everything inside as quickly as possible. We eventually were ready to go, had the manual safety demonstration and headed into the sky, well over an hour late.

A Visit To The Tiny Toilet

I hate asking the people next to me to get up when I have to use the facilities. However needs must and they hauled themselves up so I could visit the rear toilet. These are the Airbus SpaceFlex ones, which means they are hilariously tiny.

Flying and Eating

British Airways offers EuroTraveller passengers a complementary snack and drink. This comprises of a small bottle of water and a packet of crisps.

Overall Thoughts

For a sector not too much over an hour, it’s quite a comfortable way to fly. You would hopefully not be too hungry as you’re not given much, but it is a step up from the days when British Airways served nothing and you had to buy from the menu or not eat.

The delay wasn’t particularly welcome, but this was during a lot of disruption so I was pleased the flight went ahead. Considering how cheap the fares can be, you can’t ask for much more than to get to your destination successfully.

What do you think of BA EuroTraveller? Should there be more served or is this good? Thank you for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.

Most racist company I’ve ever come across, i was attacked on the plane, then blamed for it and told to leave the flight while the man that hit and spat and me was allowed. Had no care for my disability or the fact i had my documents and and my mums medication on me. I would suggest not to fly with this company if you are of color as the cabin staff are very racists and sexist. And have no care or soul for the passengers welfare

The Flight Detective

Well, I hope you made a formal complaint to the airline! It’s the only way that these things will be rectified.

Online, you’ll pay $90 for a second checked bag and $170 each for your third and fourth bags. At the airport, you’ll pay $100 for your second bag and $200 for your third and fourth bags.

If you need to travel with extra bags, check fares for the next-higher cabin of service. It’s possible that you could move up and use that bag allowance for less than you would pay in extra bag fees.

Traveling with strollers, medical equipment and other items

If you are flying with children, you can check two of the following items:

Fully collapsible stroller.

Car seat or booster seat.

Travel cot.

Baby back carrier.

British Airways doesn’t have weight requirements or charge fees for heavy medical equipment that is above standard allowances. This includes wheelchairs and equipment to help mobility. But bring a letter from your doctor if you need to travel with medical supplies like heavy equipment, liquids or syringes.

If you’ve already booked your flight but need to change your itinerary, the fees you’ll pay depend on whether you bought your ticket using cash or Avios, the currency of British Airways’ frequent flyer program.

Change and booking fees for flights booked with Avios

If you want to redeem Avios for a flight over the phone instead of online, you’ll pay a $25 service fee. If you need to change your award flight or cancel and have your Avios redeposited into your account, the fee is $55 plus a $25 service fee. These fees apply to flights originating in the U.S.

If you have Gold status or higher with British Airways, you won’t have to pay a fee to change award flights.

Change fees for cash tickets

If you need to make a change to your booking, cancel your flight or buy new tickets then you may have to pay a service fee. Service fees vary by cabin class, fare price and/or local laws and can range significantly.

Unless you booked a basic economy, you can choose your seat for free when you check in for your flight. If you want to select your seats sooner, you’ll have to pay a fee that varies by ticket type and your travel class.

Basic economy holders normally have their seat assigned by the airline at check-in, but they can pay either at time of booking or at check-in to select a seat, with fees varying by itinerary.

» Learn more: Award sweet spots using British Airways Avios

Each airline has its own fees for checked bags and ticket changes. Knowing these fees before you book can help you avoid unexpected costs or budget for expenses you know you'll need to incur.

As always, plan ahead and research the airline's website for specifics related to your flight and situation.

British Airways Luggage Allowance

British Airways Baggage Allowance

British Airways baggage allowance system depends on your ticket class and club membership. It can be a bit complicated to understand.

Additional baggage fees depend on several complicated factors, including size, weight, whether you booked your baggage when you bought your ticket, and where you’re flying from.

Don’t worry, if you book your flight with us , we’ll make sure you have all the information you need!

Let’s start with the basics:

Hand Baggage Allowances (aka: Carry-on or Hand Luggage)

Cabin baggage allowances apply to your British Airways  and BA City Flyer tickets, along with hand baggage only (Basic) fares and selected British Airways short and long haul flights.

Note: Your baggage allowance may be different if you’re flying on a British Airways partner airline for any part of your journey.

Free carry-on baggage allowance for adults, young adults, and children:

1 – Handbag or laptop bag

1 – A standard carry-on bag

British Airways Size & Weight Restrictions:

euro traveller british airways baggage

Personal item (purse or laptop bag): 16 x 12 x 6in (40 x 30 x 15cm), up to 51lb (23kg)

Standard carry-on: 22 x 18 x 10in (56 x 45 x 25cm), up to 51lb (23kg)

  • At check-in, your bags must fit completely into the baggage gauge (including handles, pockets, and wheels).
  • Each bag must be under the weight limit. A light bag cannot make up for a bag that exceeds the weight limit.
  • Your bags must be light enough for you to handle by yourself. You must be able to lift your bags into the overhead locker and retrieve them on landing.
  • You will always be able to carry your handbag or laptop-size bag with you in the cabin.
  • The number of carry-on bags will occasionally exceed the storage capacity, and British Airways booking agents may ask you to check a carry-on at the ticket counter. As long as it is within the size limitations for carry-on allowance, you won’t be charged extra. Make sure you have no valuables or essential medication packed in this bag.
  • Duty-free shopping bags and other airport purchases count as hand baggage. If you have more than your free allowance, any extra bags will be checked into the hold and you’ll be charged a baggage fee.

Carry-on Bag Allowance For Infants and Toddlers (under 2) Riding in Your Lap

1 – carry-on bag for items required during the flight.

Size and weight restrictions: Up to 22 x 18 x 10in (56 x 45 x 25cm), maximum weight: 51lb (23kg)

British Airways Hand Luggage Only Fare

first class travel luggage

For travelers who hate the baggage carousel and like to pack light, British Airways offers a lower fare on selected short and long-haul routes with no checked luggage included. Hand luggage allowance remains the same, one personal item and one carry-on bag.

With Business Class Experts , you’ll get such a deep discount, you won’t care about the extra baggage fees!

British Airways Economy Class Checked Baggage Allowances (Euro Traveller, World Traveller)

Each checked bag can be up to 35.5 x 29.5 x 16in (90 x 75 x 43cm), including anything that sticks out, like the handle, pockets, and wheels. The maximum weight for any bag is 70lbs.

  • Adults and young adults (from 12 years) – 1 bag (max. 32kg / 70lb per bag)

British airways first class checked baggage allowances ( club europe, club world, first, club world london city).

With a first class ticket , you are allowed extra baggage, but the rules for bags remain the same. If you upgrade to a higher class at the airport , the baggage rules for that class apply for that flight. Connecting and return flights may have different rules. Each checked bag can be up to 35.5 x 29.5 x 16in (90 x 75 x 43cm), including anything that sticks out, like the handle, pockets, and wheels. The maximum weight for any bag is 70lbs.

  • Additional bag allowances apply to British Airways flights only.
  • Infants who are traveling without their own seats do not get an extra baggage allowance.
  • Not available for group rate bookings.

Wheelchairs and Medical Equipment

You can take wheelchairs, mobility aids, and other equipment for personal use at no additional baggage charges, as long as they meet the size restrictions:

  • British Airways long haul aircraft: maximum dimensions 55.1 x 33.5 x 41.7in (140 x 85 x 106cm)
  • British Airways short-haul aircraft: maximum dimensions 55.1 x 33.5 x 41.7in (140 x 85 x 106cm)

If your wheelchair or mobility aid weighs over 551lbs, contact British Airways to verify they are able to carry it.

  • You’ll get a lower bag charge rate if you pay online in advance.
  • You can ship overweight bags for an extra charge.

  • You can take sporting equipment and musical instruments .
  • If you are checking in a large piece of baggage, please allow an additional 15 minutes so that the item can be safely and securely handed over to the Baggage staff.
  • There are no overweight charges for personal wheelchairs, mobility aids or medical equipment. Check BA’s disability assistance or medical information for specific information.

Baggage Allowances when Traveling on British Airways Partner Airlines

When you book a British Airlines flight, some parts of your journey may be on other airlines. Your baggage allowances may follow BA rules, or may be subject to the rules of the other carrier. You can tell by the code on your ticket. If all connecting flights on your trip have a BA code (for example: BA1234) you can go by the British Airways’ checked baggage allowance outlined above, even if some or all of the flights are on other carriers.

  • If every flight in your journey has another airline’s code (examples: AA1122 or IB3210), please follow the baggage allowance for those carriers.
  • If some of the flights on your trip have a BA code and connecting flights have other airline codes, you will get the allowance of the most significant carrier – usually the airline operating the longest part of the journey. For example, if you’re flying from the USA to Europe, and the first part of your trip is LAX to NYC on American Airlines, then you catch an international flight to Europe from New York on British Airways, you can follow the baggage allowance guide for British Airways.

Simple Flying

British airways club europe vs euro traveler - a complete review.

As a Simple Flying reporter, I've been at Heathrow three times in as many days . On Tuesday I flew out to Toulouse, returning yesterday. As both legs were with British Airways, I flew one leg in Club Europe, and the other in Euro Traveller in order to review the two cabins for Simple Flying readers.

Flight Details

I flew to Toulouse to report on the delivery of ANA's first A380 . As such, I flew out on BA378 on Tuesday. This was an A321 service departing Heathrow at 13:35 and arriving in Toulouse at 16:25. The flight actually departed late at 13:54, but arrived 15 minutes early at 16:10. This flight was flown in Club Europe on an A321.

The return journey was flown in Euro Traveller aboard BA379. This was operated between Toulouse and London, utilising an A320 with Sharklets. The flight was scheduled to depart at 17:10 and indeed managed to depart on time. However, the flight landed significantly ahead of schedule. In fact, it landed 25 minutes early at 17:40.

British Airways uses the group process to board their flights. On short haul flights, this consists of five groups:

  • 1st Group - Club Europe and BA Executive Club Gold passengers;
  • 2nd Group - BA Executive Club Silver Members;
  • 3rd Group - BA Executive Club Bronze Members;
  • Group 4 & 5 - All other passengers.

Being in Club Europe meant that I was one of the first people to board the flight. Interestingly, as the flight was almost full, British Airways used the lure of preboarding to encourage passengers to gate check their bags. As such, these passengers boarded the aircraft before Group 1.

Thankfully, however, as Club Europe is spacious with a limited number of seats, there is no rush to secure space. At my seat I was offered a "hot" towel; however it felt more like it had just fallen out of the sun.

On the return flight, I was allocated Group 4 as a consequence of travelling in Euro Traveller. Thankfully this had no impact on me, as I was one of the last passengers to board the aircraft following traffic en route to the airport. I was even able to find enough space in an overhead locker to cram the bulkier of my two bags.

In Club Europe passengers are provided with the exact same seat as Euro Traveller passengers. These are all laid out in a 3-3 configuration, however, in Club Europe, the middle seat is replaced by a table. As such, every Club Europe seat is either a Window or Aisle seat. I was sat in 2A, a window seat with 30" of pitch. I had ample leg room on the flight and was able to store my bag under the middle seat in front, meaning my foot area was completely clear.

The return in Euro Traveller was a very different story. While the seat pitch on the A320 is generally equal to that of the A321, I discovered that this was not so in row 30. But this wasn't the worst part of my seat.

Seat 3oA has no window. As such, I spent the duration of the flight blissfully unaware of the outside world. This was a slightly claustrophobic experience as I was surrounded by walls on two sides. However, the worst part was the turbulent departure.

At the rear of the aircraft, passengers are furthest from the aircraft's centre of gravity, meaning that every bump is amplified. When this is tied in with the lack of outside awareness, the experience is unpleasant, to say the least. Additionally, British Airways confirmed that row 30 has 29 inches of pitch.

In Flight Service

The inflight service on British Airways varies wildly depending on your cabin. This is mostly driven by the price difference between the two cabins. In Club Europe catering is complimentary, and I was offered a choice of dishes. I opted for the "Shaved Scottish roast beef on a tartar cream with rocket, tomato and Parmesan". While this was delicious, it was a meal with very little substance. For dessert, I received a "Do & Co’s passion-fruit panna cotta", which turned out to be the highlight of the trip. Drinks wise, I was able to have a complimentary alcoholic drink and a coffee. I requested a second coffee approximately 20 minutes before landing, and the stewardess went out of her way to brew a whole new pot for me.

Again, the service in Euro Traveller differed substantially, however, so too did the ticket price. No complimentary refreshments are offered in the economy cabin, meaning all passengers must buy refreshments from the onboard menu. I opted for the Cheese and Mushroom Toastie and a packet of Percy Pigs, setting me back around seven pounds. Although these were suitably tasty, not everyone had the option. The service began at the front of the cabin, then the back of the cabin. A fellow journalist in row 20 was only able to buy a brownie as the food had run out by the time they got to him.

On arrival at Toulouse, I was one of the first passengers off of the aircraft. This was as there were only 5 passengers ahead of me. The process was fairly quick and meant I didn't need to queue for passport control. However, on arrival, it took 10 minutes from when the seatbelt sign was switched off, to stepping off of the aircraft. This was due to the fact that British Airways only deplane from the front at Heathrow.

Overall Opinion

Overall, Club Europe was a far superior product, however, this is to be expected to the difference in ticket price. A lot of people dislike the fact that the seat is the same, however, the food and service is nice. On balance, however, despite this, I would still likely only opt to travel in Club Europe in order to accumulate additional frequent flyer points.

Checked baggage allowances

Your checked baggage allowance is the total number of bags, their size and weight that go into the aircraft hold. This varies depending on the cabin you're travelling in, your frequent flyer member status and other factors.

If you already have a booking with us, the easiest way to check your allowance is in  Manage My Booking . Otherwise, you can find more information in the tables below.

British Airways and BA CityFlyer flights

A checked bag can be  up to 90 x 75 x 43cm (35.5 x 29.5 x 16in),  including any bits that stick out, like the handle, pockets and wheels.

The  weight limit  applies to each bag. It's not possible to split the total weight across multiple bags.

Ways to increase your checked baggage allowance

Hand baggage only (Basic) tickets

If you are travelling on a hand baggage only (Basic) fare, checking in baggage costs extra. However, if you’re  travelling with an infant or a child  up to 11 years old, you can check two items, such as a  fully collapsible pushchair (stroller) ,  a car seat or a travel cot  for free for each infant or child.

You can pay and check in bags at any time before you fly, but you’ll get the best rate if you pay online in advance.

More about paying to take checked bags

Checked baggage in economy (Euro Traveller, World Traveller)

Checked baggage in premium economy (world traveller plus), checked baggage in first and business (club europe, club world, first, club world london city), extra allowances for executive club and  one world members.

Silver and Gold Executive Club Members and equivalent members in other  one world frequent flyer programmes get additional baggage allowances.

*You must be travelling on the booking for these benefits to apply. They apply to British Airways flights only and are not available to infant Members who are travelling without their own seat. Not available on group rate bookings.

Allowances when flying in different cabins

Direct flights.

If your return journey includes flights in more than one cabin, the baggage allowance for each flight will apply.

  • If you fly from London to Cape Town in Club World, the allowance for that cabin will apply for that flight: 2 bags up to 32kg each.
  • If you return from Cape Town to London in World Traveller, the allowance for that cabin will apply for that flight: 1 bag up to 23kg.

You can take more bags than your allowance, which are charged per bag up to a total of 10 per person, including your allowance.

Stopovers and connecting journeys

If you include a  stopover , for example you fly from London to Singapore in Club World and then continue at a later date from Singapore to Sydney in World Traveller, the separate baggage allowances for each cabin will apply.

When you fly in more than one cabin on a  connecting journey , the baggage allowance for the  most significant sector  will apply to the whole journey, which is usually the longest flight.

If you fly from Dubai to London in Club World and then connect from London to Rome in Euro Traveller, each flight will have a different baggage allowance. You will be given the baggage allowance for the longest flight which is the Dubai, Club World sector for the whole of your connecting journey.

Log in to Manage My Booking  to check your allowance and save money when you pay for extra bags online before you check in.

Checking in baggage for connecting flights

If you're connecting at an airport that requires you to clear your baggage at the first point of entry  and you are connecting to a domestic flight in that country, please follow the signs for 'Arrivals/Baggage reclaim' to collect your bags and check it in again as normal for your connecting flight.

If you are connecting onto another flight,  you can check your bags through to your final destination, providing:

  • All your flights are on one booking reference with the same ticket number, or
  • All your flights are with  one world airlines booked under the same booking reference, even though you may hold separate ticket numbers.

If you have booked separate flights with different booking references to reach your final destination,  for example Edinburgh to London in one booking followed by London to New York in another booking, you will need to:

  • Check in your bags for your first flight e.g. Edinburgh to London.
  • Follow the signs for 'Arrivals/Baggage reclaim' in London to collect your bags.
  • Check them in again for your second flight e.g. London to New York.
  • Allow sufficient time to connect to your next flight –  see recommended check in times .

If you're not sure, please ask a member of staff when you check in your bags in at the start of your journey.

Pushchairs (strollers)

If you have a  small, fully collapsible and lightweight pushchair/stroller  (with maximum dimensions of 117cm x 38cm x 38cm/46in x 15in x 15in when the pushchair is collapsed), you may be able to qualify to take this right to the aircraft door and collect at the aircraft door at most airports.

Please arrive at your departure gate no later than 40 minutes before departure time, and prepare to pre-board the aircraft.

The staff will put your pushchair into the hold and will do all possible to return it to you at the aircraft door, where possible.

Pushchairs that fold down into a carry bag, such as the Yo-Yo Zen, and are within the maximum hand baggage dimensions, can be taken on board in place of, but not in addition to, your larger cabin bag. As with all larger cabin bags, this is not guaranteed to travel in the cabin, but our staff will make every effort to accommodate it so long as space is available.

All other, larger pushchairs, including double and multi-piece pushchairs can be taken to the departure gate, however, on arrival you must pick up these larger pushchairs at the baggage carousel in the baggage hall.

Please be aware that walking distances at airports can be long, and if you bring a larger pushchair you should be prepared to transport your child to the baggage carousel by another method.

More about family baggage

Wheelchairs and mobility aids

You can take an unlimited number of wheelchairs, mobility aids and associated equipment in addition to your free baggage allowance, as long as they are for your personal use and each piece is within the dimensions stated in the table below.

In addition to wheelchairs, mobility aids and associated equipment includes items such as walking frames, ramps, shower seats, bed supports, hoists and spare wheelchair wheels. There are no overweight charges for personal wheelchairs or mobility aids/equipment.

However,  if your wheelchair or mobility aid weighs over 250kg (551lb) , please  contact us  so we can make sure we're able to carry it.

We can accommodate most types of  battery-powered wheelchairs . To help us prepare, please provide us with advance notification and follow some safety guidance before you travel.

More about disability and mobility assistance

Medical equipment and medical supplies

There are no weight limits or overweight charges for travelling with  medical equipment , such as CPAP or portable dialysis machines.

There are, however, limits to the number of excess bags of medication or medical supplies, such as dialysis fluid or colostomy packs, that each customer can check into the hold without charge and these need to be accompanied by an official medical letter and authorised when you check your bags in at the airport. Please see our  medical information  for specific advice.

Increasing your checked baggage allowance

  • You can  take more bags  than your free checked baggage allowance for an additional fee. You’ll get the best rate if you pay online in advance.
  • You can take  overweight bags  for an extra charge.
  • You can take larger items of up to 190 x 75 x 65cm (75 x 29.5 x 25.5in) as long as they weigh no more than your permitted baggage weight allowance. If the bag weighs more than your allowance, you will be charged extra at the airport. No bag can weigh more than 32kg. Any items larger than the above dimensions will require  shipping as cargo .
  • Find out more about taking  sporting equipment and musical instruments .
  • If you are checking in a large piece of baggage, please allow an additional 15 minutes so that the item can be safely and securely handed over to the Baggage staff.

Items you cannot take with you

There are a number of rules and restrictions about what you can and cannot carry in your baggage.

Safety regulations for baggage

Travelling on other airlines

If your journey includes a flight with an airline other than British Airways, your checked baggage allowance may be different:

  • If every flight in your journey has a  BA code  (e.g. BA1234) you will get British Airways’ checked baggage allowance, even if some or all of the flights are operated by other airlines (so-called 'codeshare' flights).
  • If every flight in your journey has  another airline’s code , you will get that airline’s baggage allowance.
  • If your journey includes a  mix of BA and other airline codes  (e.g. AA1122 or IB3210) you will get the allowance of the most significant carrier – usually the airline operating the longest part of the journey.

Our franchise partner Comair is an independent airline that uses British Airways branding and flight codes across its network. It operates across southern Africa (flight numbers BA6200-6449).

The weight limit applies to each bag. It's not possible to split the total weight across multiple bags.

Our franchise partner SUN-AIR of Scandinavia is an independent airline that uses British Airways branding and flight codes across its network. It operates flights across northern Europe (flight numbers BA8200-8299).

You can take one checked bag up to 90 x 75 x 43cm (35.5 x 29.5 x 16in) and weighing max. 23kg.

If you're an Executive Club Member you can have one 23kg bag included in your reward flight costs when you're travelling with our partner Flybe*.

*Note 20kg if booked prior to 12 May 2017.

Unfortunately, due to different systems being used we're currently not able to display your baggage allowance when you make or view your booking on ba.com or via our contact centres.

Other airlines

Check your hand baggage allowance on  American Airlines ,  Finnair ,  Iberia ,  Japan Airlines  and  Qatar Airways .

If you’re travelling with British Airways on an upcoming flight, it is essential to know the airline´s baggage allowance and fees. Here is an overview of what you need to know.

Hand Luggage Allowance

British Airways allows all passengers to bring one piece of hand luggage and one small personal item, such as a handbag or laptop, on board. The hand luggage must not exceed dimensions of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm, and the small item must not exceed 40cm x 30cm x 15cm. Both items can not exceed a weight of 23kg.

Excess Baggage Fees

If your hand luggage exceeds the allowed dimensions, it will be checked into the hold and added to your checked baggage allowance. However, if your checked baggage exceeds the allowance, you will be charged the airport’s excess baggage fees. Be sure to check your baggage before your flight to avoid any additional fees.
